The Western Shade Of Green

As previously mentioned, I’ve purchased two Pokèmon Green carts as I needed one of them to be modified into a mockup western release. Japanese versions of Pokèmon’s first generation core titles were distribuited with a grey cartridge shell, while the western world decided that these games looked far better with an aptly coloured cartridge; that’s why our Pokèmon Blue is actually blue, Red sports a red shell, Yellow is banana-coloured as you’d expect, and so on. Bootleggers have released counterfeit copies of Pokèmon Green with an actually green shell, but just as any other fake production, this cartridge’s quality is terrible; I decided to go for a personal, custom edit that would actually play the original game.

First off, I acquired everything I needed for my modification: along with the right cartridge (duh) and my trusty and ever-present set of screwdrivers, I bought a couple of auto-adhesive printing sheets for the custom label, and a spraying can of green dye. I decided to document such edit and put it as a Guide post for anyone who wishes to do the same. Ready?

1: Peel off the label and thoroughly clean your cartridge. Then, open it.

In retrospect, peeling the label off has been the single hardest part of this procedure. How is it that kids always succeed in ruining them so easily? Even after pulling it off, there was still a whole lot of glue and scraps residue on the shell, and I had to remove it with a few drops of olive oil (as Internet suggested me). Luckily that worked nicely and it was easy to clean up, because between oil and alcohol (used to clean up the cartridge and soak the label before peeling it off) I wasn’t sure if I was cleaning it or making a salad.

As for what it concerns opening the cart, there are a few methods: either get a compatible screwdriver, or use the infamous “pen-and-lighter” method. In reality, it’s also possible to rotate the screw by using two finely tipped screwdrivers, if you’re careful enough: tips may slip off and scratch your shell. One particular feature of Game Boy cartridges is that the shell’s two parts don’t come off easily even after taking off the screw: that’s because they’re not only pushed together, but locked in a way that they have to be lightly slided off before pulling them apart. I think that’s a clever method to keep the parts in place even when their screw is lost.

And finally, the cartridge’s entrails were exposed! For me, it has been the first time I was seeing and handling a game board in real life: it’s heavier than I thought! Also, it was interesting to discover that I could recognize every portion of it: identification code, battery, Nintendo’s licensed chips... almost like a biology class.

2: Store the board away and spraypaint the shell.

The board is simply laying without any screw to keep it locked, so it was easy to remove. In order to keep it somewhere safe, I decided to store it away in a cartridge cover. Above, you can see my spraywork over the shell. While I could have done it with normal acrylic paint, I didn’t want to have brushlines visible all over the cart, so spray turned out to be the best option. A single layer of paint is enough: too much would make the cart’s engravings less visible. Just be sure to cover every single nook and cranny! Depending on your paint, you might have to wait a few hours or even a whole day before it dries up; keep the shells somewhere sunny and windy, and don’t pick them up while the paint’s still fresh. In the meanwhile...

3: Design your label digitally, and print it out on sticker paper.

In order to make it look as legit as possible, I took measurements and proportions of an actual italian Pokèmon Blue label (of course, all my carts are italian so this one won’t be an exception) and downloaded every single high resolutioned graphic I needed (Pokèmon/Nintendo logo and seal of quality, Venusaur’s official art made by Sugimori); the only thing I missed was the background, but that took nothing to draw. I even wrote its exact identification code, and in just an hour of work it was ready to be printed out. Okay, cutting a straight-edged label was yet another challenge! You’d think something so small would be easy to cut off, but nope! It took me several tries before getting one that looked decent; luckily, I had printed out a whole sheet.

4: Re-assemble your cartridge, close it and place the new label on its shell.

Assembling the cartridge shell with its board inside and screwing it closed is the easiest thing ever: yet, placing the new label’s gonna be a real patience and precision test. You’re going to need all your muscles to keep as still as possible as you’re lowering your adhesive sheet on the plastic... Spoiler: it isn’t as straight as I wanted it to be, but still, I’m very happy of the result! All in all, I must say everything went pretty smooth for a first and only try, and the final version looks very close to the original ones, so much so that the colour is exactly the same intensity of legit carts (at least in real life: somehow it looks very dark on camera pictures), as you can see above.

In conclusion: am I satisfied? Oh man, yes! This is truly the first (and probably only) custom piece of my collection, and finally something personal to boast about and show off! I do recognize it has some minor imperfections, mainly regarding its label, but they’re minimal and if anything, they show this edit is homemade. The best part of this custom version is... I can still play it!
