SPR Prep Week - Day 1
Yesterday we got welcomed into the Facebook group. Currently there are 68 people in the group.
because it is the xtreme programme, some people are extremely fit already. This is very inspiring! Also the Coach is soooo nice! Love the support.
this week I’m going to start doing some of the daily routine so I’m used to it by next week. The first thing I did when I woke up was drink around 300ml of water. It’s supposed to be 500ml but I’m finding it difficult to drink lukewarm water (I prefer chilled and iced) but I don’t have a fridge in my room. However I feel super awake and alert after drinking 300ml. Will use a different bottle tomorrow to make it colder (hopefully)
This week I’m on my period. The good thing is it happened on prep week, not the official start week. Hopefully it will be done by the weekend. Still going to go to the gym, need to change my perspective about periods. Usually I use this time as an excuse to be lazy and snack. But this time I’m going to be active and productive. Arms and 5k today.
Tomorrow (Tuesday) we will receive all the info we will need to begin the SPR Xtreme Challenge. I really can’t wait now! Wish time would hurry up.

Heyy! I have a question. I want to self study German but I don't know what materials I should use. I was wondering what you were using :)
Hi! 
I’ve been learning German for over 20 years, and I’ll be graduating at uni this summer from the German department, so I’ll try to do my best to guide you through it.
I’ve learned it through TV when I was very little, and it does work - it helps you with your listening and speaking skills. Currently, whenever I feel like I’m forgetting German I refresh those skills here:

As for websites, if you haven’t started yet, Duolingo should give you a fair background for further learning. It’s decently structured and should give you an insight into the language. Plus, it offers a grammar overview of the lessons, which is very important that you read through. I’ve heard that there’s a ‘story’ option, where you can get short stories to improve your reading skills and learn new vocabulary. There is also a Facebook group for Duolingo German learners where people ask questions, I would recommend it - I’m still a member there. Apart from that, I suggest joining more groups where you can discuss the questions that you have with other learners. 
A very important source for learning German is the Goethe Institute. They also give out the certificates for each level. If you can’t enroll in their classes, I would recommend you buy their materials for self-study. In the meantime:

YouTube is also a good source for learning any language. You could watch Learn German, their channel has a playlist of videos sorted by levels and by topics. Personally, I watched Jenny’s videos on her channel lingoni GERMAN - I found them really helpful, especially when I had to acquire declensions. Do subscribe to her. :) 
Another very important source for learning German is die Deutsche Welle, we still use it sometimes at uni! You could use their Learn German section, which is also sorted by levels and offers a great deal of material. 
These days my main sources are the Erkundungen textbooks (level C2) and the German bible Deutsche Grammatik by Helbig und Buscha (I’m sure you’ve seen me quote it a lot on here).
I hope this was somewhat helpful. It’s always hard to recommend decent sources when I’ve learned it like kids usually do myself, but I did my best to collect some good stuff for you. Throughout the pandemic, the US Center for Disease Control (CDC) published numerous false and misleading studies that bolstered national and international political goals and guided social media censorship. Three recent examples illustrate the issue.
1) Covid, Kids and Diabetes
A recent CDC study falsely suggested that covid increased the risk of type 1 or type 2 diabetes in children, see reviews here and here (the study didn’t consider obesity rates, for instance). The misleading CDC study was published in parallel to the ongoing covid child vaccination campaign.
In reality, it is covid vaccines that have been shown to cause, in some cases, elevated (pre-diabetic) blood sugar levels and life-threatening diabetic ketoacidosis, while lockdowns and school closures have led to an unprecedented increase in childhood obesity (and possibly diabetes).

2) Face Masks in Schools
In September, the CDC published a study falsely claiming that masks reduced coronavirus infections in schools, see reviews here and here (“profoundly misleading”, “very shaky science”).
In reality, face masks have had no impact at all on coronavirus infections; in fact, the official CDC school study from May 2021 confirmed this, but the result was never publicized.
More recently, the CDC has begun recommending N95/FFP2 masks to the general public, but data from Germany and Austria showed already in 2021 that these masks had no effect, either.

3) Natural Immunity
In October, the CDC published a study falsely claiming that vaccine immunity was more robust than natural (i.e. infection-acquired) immunity, see reviews here and here (“highly flawed”).
In reality, natural immunity has been shown to be far more robust and durable than vaccine immunity, even against the omicron variant (albeit to a lesser extent).

In December, the CDC director publicly stated that “no safety problems” had been seen during the vaccination of young children (5-11), whereas the CDC’s own VAERS reporting system showed already numerous cases of serious cardiovascular, neurological and allergic adverse events in this age group at very low risk of severe covid.

Conclusion
In conclusion, pandemic guidance by the US CDC, as well as media reporting and social media censorship relying on it, have often turned out to be misleading and unjustified. To evade political misinformation campaigns, citizens should always double-check official claims.

The complete guide to Facebook listening
Outside of the day-to-day responses to posts and messages, how often do you take a step back and look at the big picture of your strategy? Listening on Facebook is a step up from monitoring and taking action. It’s used by companies around the world to understand their customers better and inform their next marketing step.
When you pair both monitoring and listening tools, you find trends that you might not have noticed before. Each network is different, though, so your listening strategy should be customized per network.

Facebook listening is taking all of the information you’re given on Facebook, like comments, recommendations and private messages, and identifying trends in them. It’s an active analysis of your passively collected data. Listening gives you a better perspective on how customers feel about you (brand perception) or shapes your next marketing campaign.
Facebook listening is not seeing a private message come in and responding to it. It’s noticing that three private messages from three different people about the same topic arrived. And then informing the best department about it. Think of it as a high-level view of everything. You rule out your anomalies, take the most common issues and address them.
Facebook monitoring vs listening
Facebook monitoring is similar to general social monitoring but with more restraints. Due to privacy concerns and API limitations, Facebook limits the kind of information it provides to third-party applications. On Twitter, you’re able to conduct and save search parameters. But on Facebook, you can’t do that as easily. Private and closed Groups, private messages and billions of posts a day mean that there’s no direct way to compile all of the search results.
So what do you monitor instead? As a brand, you can take a look at your own Messenger activity, public posts, comments and related industry Groups. If there’s a specific press release, you can check on how well it’s performing with a service like Buzzsumo’s Content Analyzer.
At this point, you’ll want to understand your own goals and how they play into your approach to Facebook monitoring. If you use Facebook primarily as a customer service portal and your customers do the same, then it would be a good idea to focus your monitoring efforts around customer comments, service issues and complaints. If you have that goal but your customers aren’t there yet, then you’ll still need to look at your other service channels for a more comprehensive view of what people are saying.

A second example is if you use Facebook’s recommendations feature to gather reviews. After you release a new product, you might receive several reviews commenting on how sturdy the new material is. Monitoring would be seeing the reviews and maybe responding to each review and thanking them. Listening would be noticing the overall trend around the word “sturdy,” making sure future products also incorporate the material and then using the word in a marketing campaign.
While monitoring is frequently reactive, Facebook listening lets you take data and proactively apply it to improving as a company.
Implementing a Facebook listening strategy
Starting a Facebook listening strategy includes the same first steps as any network. You begin with setting up your tools and understanding your goals. Why are you using a listening strategy in the first place? What do you hope to learn? If you’re brand new to this, we recommend setting up monitoring as a first step and then seeing what kind of information you gather.

Within Sprout’s Smart Inbox, you’re already able to see a variety of message types from Comments to Reviews. As you monitor these messages and respond to them, add a Message Tag to be used for listening. Later on, you’ll be able to generate a report based on these tags to see if any trends stand out.

What does this look like in practice? Sprout previously utilized the tagging feature to inform which feature needed the highest priority. Outbound messages can also be tagged so you receive a full-circle view of a product launch campaign. When Sprout was looking for which feature to develop more, it looked at the message volume for LinkedIn analytics. The number of requests for this was significant enough to make it a priority.

The generated Tag Report gives you an idea of what customers are discussing. Because these tags can be used across networks, it’ll give you a bigger view on the topic you’re looking into. A high volume around a tag “request blue color” for example, would inform a product decision for the next color.

Native search in Facebook offers you the top posts for your terms. It should not be the only search that you use. Instead, it should be a part of the listening arsenal. For example, searching for your brand, industry related terms and competitors is a good use of the search function. You can narrow these results down to those that you follow, any Group, any location and any date.

Finally, to set up a monitoring strategy on Facebook to track your competitors, navigate to Insights, then Overview and then Pages to Watch. Here, you track Pages in your industry or of your competition to see how their weekly posts are performing. Watching these trends could help you think of new ways to reach your own customers.
After you set up your monitoring, schedule time in your calendar to review all of the data. It can be done at your monthly or quarterly reports review. Unless you’re analyzing a short campaign, a daily or even weekly review may not provide enough information to analyze.

Each report will give you different analyses on your strategy. For example, the Sent Messages report will surface which posts performed the best. Review the similarities between your top posts and you can then make adjustments to continue the content approach that your audience liked best.
In a campaign report, you’ll tag your sent messages to see how well the message is resonating with audiences. During your analysis, you’ll see what’s been working and tweak future messages and campaigns.

In the retail sector, Samsung looks at their competitors to see what their most common complaints are. In its launch of the new Galaxy S9, the company posted a series of videos highlighting the differences between the Galaxy and the Apple iPhone X. The videos are sarcastic and funny, with each one focusing on one feature that Apple customers often complain about. The style is much like a comedy skit and short for maximum impact. In this example, Samsung used listening on their competitors to inform their campaign strategy by tracking down commonly voiced complaints about the competitor product.

Cool Whip and Jell-O are both owned by Kraft. But they serve slightly different audiences. While campaigns for both are targeted to adults or those with buying power, Jell-O is more fun for kids. Kraft used social listening to understand what each of these brand’s customers want and target their products accordingly. Even the content for each is different. In the first example, Jell-O’s all about playing with the food and giving parents play ideas. In the second example, Cool Whip is oriented to those who host parties and need an easy recipe to execute.
Conclusion
Using Facebook listening as part of your social listening strategy gives you a leg up against competitors. Not only does it improve your own marketing strategy but it also helps develop your other departments. On Facebook, customers aren’t afraid to tell you what they like or don’t like about your products. And when a competitor is failing in one area, social listening will help you step in and fill the gap faster.
Remember, Facebook is just one piece of the puzzle for social listening. While the network does have the most widespread audience, your other social channels need to also be incorporated. One customer may be more vocal on Twitter than on Facebook. Ignoring the other channels will only limit your view of the data that you need.

Never Been More Bullish Even as Buffett Dumps Airlines

On Saturday, May 2, Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.A, BRK.B) reported expectedly weak first-quarter results. We won’t be ditching Berkshire Hathaway’s stock in the Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio so long as Uncle Warren is at the helm, but there were a couple takeaways from the report that we want you to be aware of (we’ll have another more extensive note focusing more exclusively on Berkshire coming out soon).
The first big piece of news, something that should not be surprising to any reader of our work, is that Buffett sold his stakes in the airlines. We’ve already talked extensively about how the Oracle made a mistake in owning the airlines in the first place in Value Trap and in the following article, “Buffett Makes Another ‘Unforced Error’ in Airlines,” and we’re not reading anything at all (not on the economy, not on the equity markets) into his decision to unload shares.
Despite their oligopolistic structure, airlines do not have “moats” and arguably have decrepit economic castles. A company is generally considered a “moaty” enterprise if its ROIC, or return on invested capital, consistently exceeds its WACC (ROIC-WACC = economic profit) and is expected to continue to do so, as a result of a benign industry structure and impenetrable competitive advantages. Consistent economic profits have never happened for airlines. Airlines have always been terrible long-term investments.
According to the IATA, for example, industry-wide ROIC averaged a mere 6.7% during the 5-year period 2014-2018, well below the group’s estimated cost of capital (see image at top of this article), a period that coincides with one of the most prosperous economic environments ever witnessed across the globe. There have been hundreds of airline bankruptcies since deregulation in 1978, too, and there hasn’t been one instance where the airline industry’s ROIC has exceeded its WAAC in more than 20 years (even when oil prices collapsed in 2015/2016, ROIC still came up short).

Though COVID-19 was an unexpected catalyst, so was SARS, 9/11, oil price shocks and the Iraq war. While COVID-19 may look like it came out of left field, when it comes to the airline business, these types of shocks are part of their operations (a flu pandemic is even a documented risk factor in their regulatory filings, see image above, as illustrative), and therefore not extraordinary or even anywhere close to being considered a black swan. Massive buybacks by airlines in recent years are simply unforgiveable, as many executives even used the bankruptcy process to optimize their operations during the past few decades. They knew they were rolling the dice in a bad business.
“Let them fail,” we said more recently, and here’s what we said about what to expect from airlines in Value Trap, released December 2018:
Buffett said once that he had an 800 number that he would call anytime that he wanted to buy an airline stock again. Maybe that number has been disconnected after all these years, as Berkshire Hathaway is once again an owner of airline equities. Though the structural characteristics of an industry can and do change over time, I’m very skeptical the airline business has changed permanently for the better. Today’s airline business may be more oligopolistic in nature and much more profitable thanks to consolidation and the right-sizing of capacity, but it retains a notoriously cyclical passenger-demand profile, ties to the level and volatility of energy resource prices, considerable operating leverage, all the while barriers to entry remain low, exit barriers remain high, and fare pressure endures. The next downturn may not see as many bankruptcies as prior economic cycles due to lower unit-cost profiles, but it may turn out to only be modestly “less bad” for equity holders.
Warren Buffett ditched airlines because he knows they are terrible investments and just made a mistake, while prudently reducing exposure to the aerospace/airline industry because Berkshire also owns metal-bender Precision Castparts, one of our favorite companies that makes metal castings for jet engines. Boeing’s (BA) massive debt raise has been a material positive for the aerospace supply chain, including Precision Castparts, but the ill-health of Boeing’s airline customer base will mean commercial aerospace demand will also remain subdued for some time. We told you to stay away from Boeing a long time ago, “Boeing’s Fall from Grace.”

Today, we remain unequivocally bullish on equities for the long run. This is somewhat of a change during the past week or so. As with Professor Siegel, we do not expect markets to come anywhere close to retest the March 23 lows. While it is now much more difficult to call near-term direction than at the top in February and in dollar-cost averaging near the bottom on March 23, we’ve never been more bullish on the long term, “Staying Focused on the Long Term,” as we fully expect moral hazard advice (indexing) to not only continue to be supported via bailouts and stimulus, but actually be rewarded, a key lesson following any financial crisis.

The Treasury is expected to borrow ~$3 trillion during the current quarter, a tally that is nearly 6 times as much as the nearest record quarter of July-September 2008 during the depths of the Great Financial Crisis. The Fed plans to start buying ETFs this month, and Apple (AAPL) is borrowing 10-year debt at incredibly low rates of just 1.65%. Enter 1.65% as the discount rate in a DCF model. The bias is to the upside! The world also now has several ‘shots on goal’ for a new coronavirus vaccine with drug companies scaling up production even as any possible vaccine remains in early trials.
Concluding Thoughts
Warren Buffett wrote his now-famous op-ed to the New York Times on October 16, 2008, and this is what you need to know:
Over the long term, the stock market news will be good. In the 20th century, the United States endured two world wars and other traumatic and expensive military conflicts; the Depression; a dozen or so recessions and financial panics; oil shocks; a flu epidemic; and the resignation of a disgraced president. Yet the Dow rose from 66 to 11,497.
The news may be scary in coming months, and market volatility may elevate again, but we’ve never been more bullish on the longer run. The biggest advantage of an individual investor is something called time horizon arbitrage. As many professionals continue to fear a break below the March 23 lows in the near term, we’re focused on how this market absorbs the tremendous and unprecedented stimulus in the coming months and what that means for nominal equity prices in the longer run.
It may not happen this month or this year, but we expect lift off as investors race to preserve purchasing power!
