Easily one of my most recent favorite songs. I feel like I listened to this way more than Spotify says I did! I get it stuck in my head often and just...Matt Maher...is one of my favorite artists in general. His work always hits so good. I jam out to this so regularly and it never fails to lift my mood.

🧡: The song that you were most surprised to see in your top 10 (or top 100)

I have zero memories of listening to this enough to get in my top 100. (Nothing in my top ten is a surprise). I mean don't get me wrong, I love Lord Huron, but I don't even recall having this on any of my main playlists!

💛: A song that does not deserve to be listened to as much as you listened to it

I don't really have a good answer for this (they all deserve to be listened to!) but I think I'll go with another song that was a surprise to see in my top 100.

I didn't recall either the artist or the song by name but I definitely recognize the song. It's one of those I vibe to while making art a lot.

I don't know that there is one? I think the closest I come to is just how high up this one is on the list

I hate the discourse(tm) around Taylor Swift and dislike always feeling like I have to explain myself when it comes to her music. I like her lyrics. I like the stories she tells in her songs. Yeah, musically she's average, but I do love her poetry.

And this one slaps me in the face with To Partake feels. It's a big Elrond @Gil song.

💜: A song that is associated with a very specific place/time/situation for you

Most of them, really! But let's go with this one:

This is The Celrond song. No one can convince me otherwise. I know I say a lot of songs are The Celrond Song. But forreal this one. I have loved this song ever since it was released but if I think about it too long in context of Celrond I start to bawl like a baby.

This is my top song for the year, and I get why.

This year has been a lot of healing for me from a lot of shit back in 2022. 2022 got very dark there for a while. This song, to me, is about catharsis and finding connection again, and that's what this year has been about for me.

games: currently i am obsessed with sims 4 (and the mods. the mods.). also i started playing genshin impact in 2022 and despite being quite awful at fights with big bosses, i cant spend hours going after slimes, hilichurls and exploring. god i love exploring.

books: i am currently under a severe reading slump (seriously send help) but i became obsessed with all for the game by nora sakavic two years ago and if i get sick if i don't reread all three books every month<3 0/10 awful books but i would die for them and their characters. my main blog isn't @fuckyeahjeanmoreau for no reason! i also love pride and prejudice and a bunch of ao3 fics<33333

music: right so i listen to pretty much everything as long as its lyrics are decent (see not sexist/homophobic etc). what i listen depends on my mood but take a look at my spotify if you want and let me know if we have songs in common! some favourite albums include: preacher's daughter by ethel cain (i am convinced it's the best album in the history of albums), folklore/evermore by taylor swift, melodrama by lordre, and the whole discography by bts (and each member's solo activity)

Junmyeon, stage name Suho (meaning "guardian"), is a South Korean singer, songwriter, and television, film, and musical actor. He is the leader and lead vocalist of EXO. 

This post is part of an effort to celebrate the accomplishments of EXO over the past 10 years and to provide tangible avenues for supporting these artists in 2022 (when they will likely be leaving SM Ent.) and beyond 🖤

An Introspective Study of my 2022 Spotify Wrapped

I know Spotify Wrapped is kinda cringe and people hate brands trying to sum up a year, but I embrace cringe and I want to talk about my music taste for the year. 2022 is a unique study of my tastes because I didn't actually use Spotify much for a large part of the year.

As discussed in Media Recommendations #37, I spent a few months bingeing all of Season 2 of Critical Role, and recently, I've been listening to another D&D podcast called Dungeons of Drakkenheim. Now I hate being alone with my thoughts, so while I usually will have my headphones in with music to fill that void, D&D filled that role for a large part. And so, Spotify did not get as much use.

The interesting impact of this on the trends in Spotify Wrapped compared to 2021, is that times of obsession are overrepresented in the data. In past years, if there was a song I played on repeat for a week, it would maybe make it to somewhere in the top 10 maybe, but the top songs would still be my evergreen faves. This year, when I had a song on repeat for a week, that would've been one of the only times I was on Spotify, and it would therefore be guaranteed top 5.

With that preamble out of the way, let's discuss my Spotify Wrapped 2022.

So first bit of data to analyse is my taste in genres. The top 5 they gave me is Rock, Dance Pop, Otacore, Indie Pop, and Anime. In the past, Dance Pop was my top genre, since a lot of my fave songs are 90s or 00s Pop like Savage Garden, Gorillaz, or Outkast. But I went through a phase of angsty rock music early in the year, where I constructed a play list of Linkin Park, Imagine Dragons, and Nirvana.

In my younger years, I thought these and other teen angst bands were cringe, but earlier this year, when I recommended Sail by Awolnation, I went through a phase where I accepted sometime a bad mood needs angsty music.

Otacore and Anime are more a result of later in the year, when I started to listen to a lot of Anime OPs, and music by Vtubers. For those confused by the term Otacore (like i was), it basically means weeb music. Videogames, Japanese, Anime.

Next, my top song was Komm Susser Tod, from the soundtrack of The End of Evangelion. Now to be perfectly blunt, I didn't walk away from Eva a superfan. It was confusing at times, and often hard to follow. But at the time, I was going through huge problems with family relationships and self esteem. I was in a state where suicide was a real option, and unfortunately, the lyrics of Komm Susser Tod really impacted me.

So with sadness in my heart, I feel the best thing I could do, is end it all, and leave forever. What's done is done, it feels so bad, what once was happy, now is sad. I'll never love again, my world is ending.

You can see how easy it is for someone in a real bad place to get into a worse place with messaging like "it all returns to nothing, I just keep letting me down, letting me down, letting me down."

Now I am in a much better place, but I still appreciate Komm Susse Tod as a very powerful piece that sounds amazing and has very impactful lyrics. So even after I had gotten mentally better, I often replayed this song. 26 plays is not a lot, but again, I wasn't on Spotify a lot this year.

As for the rest of my top 5, it's a bit of a mixed bag. Imagine Dragons' "Believer" started out as a frequent play because of a meme song from Siivagunner if you'd believe me. But as that Angst play list became a more frequent part of my listen time, I started enjoying the song unironically. Out of Touch is up there as a happy accident. It's just a song I'm often in the mood for. And while it is tangentially a bad mood song, it's more often a comfort song.

Magic Circuit I've gotten more into this year. They're an Indie Dance Electronic band that sometimes features Vtuber personalities such as Nyanners and Ironmouse on vocals on their tracks. Slip is the first song of theirs I ever listened to, and it's still my big fave of theirs to this day.

Money Game pt 2, like Believer, I started listening to as a meme, since there was this clip featuring the best verse of the song circulating at the time. But then I legit became a fan of Ren and his music. He's often does stuff commentating on how much the world sucks and how we live in a society. Big recommend his stuff if you're unfamiliar.

Despite my suicidal angsty phase earlier in the year, my top artist was Ninja Sex Party again. And that's good news for my mental health overall, since NSP is all about absurd positivity. Despite there being no NSP songs, even in my top 10, I wanna attribute NSP being my top artist to the fact that I listen to so many different songs of their all the time.

Because while I may have only had 6 NSP songs in my top 100 play list they made me, other bands I have to be in the mood to listen to. But I'm always in the mood for NSP, and if I have my library on Shuffle, I never skip an NSP song.

As for the rest of my top 5 artists, these ones were also consistently in my good books. Magic Circuit I have sung the praises of above. And while I said that I had 6 NSP songs in my top 100, there were also 6 Magic Circuit Songs. Nyanners is my favourite vtuber, and also a really good singer. She does vocals for most of my favourite Magic Circuit songs, but she also releases songs outside of their collab. And while some of them are shitpost songs like Hey Boy Hey Boy (subtitle: I wanna fart in your mouth), others are legit bops such as Foolish Heart, which was my Top Song last year. She also recently released a cover of Snake Eater (from Metal Gear Solid) that I'm a big fan of.

Maroon 5 got really into my good books this year. I've always thought Maroon 5 was alright, but this year I took the chance to really explore their catalogue, and found there were many songs of theirs I enjoyed that I didnt even know was them like Harder to Breath or their new one Memories.

Imagine Dragons, as I mentioned above, was originally a meme follow, but I became a fan of quite of few of their songs, not just Believer, but Radioactive, the tie in song for Arcane: Enemies, and I like their new one, Bones.

My "Listening Personality" was The Deep Diver, which just confirmed my suspicion that this year's Spotify listens was very often obsession based. When I investigated Maroon 5, I went back and listened to all their stuff. When I followed a couple of Magic Circuit songs, and then their new album came out, I listened to all of it, multiple times.

Not a lot of regular vibing with music this year. It was either I was in the mood for some serious jamming, or I wasn't listening to music at all.

And that was my Spotify Wrapped for 2022.

I had an angst period which ended up being over represented in my top 5 artists and songs, but I also deep dived on some more happy and chill music in Magic Circuit and NSP.

I'll try to listen to more music next year and expand my scope, to try and discover more music, and try to stay in a happier mood. Best wishes for next year!

esc 2022 semi final 1 thoughts

the camera work throughout was awful. why so many wide-shots? the hosts came across like kid's shows hosts, and her dress was ugly. however, we did at least get to witness mika and his amazing language skills!

the opening show looked like the stage version of the lion king. I think rai took notes from love love peace peace.

mixed feelings on the postcards. the drones looked a png. but I enjoy seeing italy's famous sites from different angles. and I did think the origin story of how the drone came to be was cute, I liked the pinnochio reference.

albania: awful staging, she shouted more than she sang, too sexual. it's a shame bc it had potential. 4/10

latvia: they bought pussy to eurovision. "instead of meat, I eat veggies and pussies" is my new favourite lyric, am vegetarian now. should have opened instead of albania. 10/10

lithuania: she might be the only person a bowl haircut looks good on. old-fashioned french music is a genre I sometimes enjoy. bad staging though. 6/10.

switzerland: nice staging, but extremely boring song. I almost fell asleep. I think marius himself got bored. most interesting thing was the hand movements borrowed from gjon's tears. 3/10. it gets less than albania bc at least I felt something during albania's performance

slovenia: this is last in the betting odds for some reason. I really liked it! unfortunately the camerawork was atrocious during this, but I loved the disco ball and the keyboardist's energy. 9/10

ukraine: a lot of people didn't like it, but I enjoyed the blend of rap with folk music. I think Epic Flute Guy saved it for a lot of people. the choreo was a bit awkward at times though. I wonder if the main singer could see out of his hat at all. 8/10

bulgaria: måneskin look different this year. did damiano david forget to dry his hair before going on stage? sounded like arena rock. 7/10, it grew on me after a while

the netherlands: the singer looked like a white, female bilal hassani to me somehow. very pretty girl, i adore her hair. the song had indie playlist created by spotify vibes. she was obviously nervous, but I think that actually suited the song. 7/10

moldova: this was deliciously bonkers. it had everything eurovision is about. folk music, meme potential, even a the ramones reference. I need them in the final. 9/10.

portugal: I liked the instrumental at the start, but didn't like when she started singing. sounded better when the other singer joined in. 6/10

croatia: chill, but not my favourite. 6/10

denmark: the singer was meh to me, but I lived for the drummer. she should marry me. 8/10, it gains points for drummer girl

austria: terrible vocals, okay song. 5/10

iceland: I didn't like it as much as their previous few entries, but I did like the old west theme. would have preferred ja ja ding dong though. 7/10

greece: good singing and staging, but the song is boring for me. 6/10

norway: 🐺🍌🐺🍌🐺🍌 I'm ready to join the wolf-banana cult. out of this year's "weird" songs, this had the best stage. this will be memed the most this year, I think. 7/10.

armenia: the staging looked like it was made of toilet paper, sorry 💀 she has a strong voice though. there was almost a huge mishap when the stage turned though (could the audience see her????). 6/10, didn't care for it particularly, but it wasn't the worst.

New Artist Spotlight: Vectralux’s Debut Indie Pop Album Gives Deja Vu a Run for Its Money

You know those memes that have been going around the past coupe of years where it’s a chaotic picture where the objects in it have been blurred or distorted so that your brain thinks it should recognize them but still can’t and you end up squinting at it for far too long? Vectralux is, in concept, a much more pleasant version of those diabolical pictures. With a name that, by their own admission, is “a made-up word that sounds strangely familiar” and title for their debut album that will have writers and linguists snarling into their unsatisfied Broca’s areas, it would seem that’s just what Vectralux want.

Conjuring nostalgic feelings via a boppy, synth-infused electro-rock sound, Vectralux’s debut Each Morning and the Morning Thereafter has the same effect musically as their name and album title have linguistically. With frontman Hannibal Heredia’s vocals that sound like a cross between Elvis Costello and Dave Pirner of Soul Asylum leading the somehow both retro-and-new-style charge,  there are lashings of everything from Duran Duran to Vampire Weekend in this album.

As is their mantra, apparently, all the songs on Each Morning…have a hint of something recognizable paired with something all the band’s own. All designed to be lyrical “parables that explore the question: how does one stay whole and smiling when leaving one life for another…” Heredia’s lyrics were inspired by his own personal journey but, in true Vectralux style, their content is familiar to anyone who’s been a human for a while: relatable and familiar but also personal.

The album opens with “Hey!” a sort of battle call to the strange wild of Vectralux and their indie pop tales whose sounds once again conjures Costello-and-the-Attractions vibes along with, perhaps, Ben Folds Five. Sort of a continuation of the title, “Hey” launches into the music stories and with music that’s both haunting and fun. The same unsettled-yet-can’t-help-but-be-happy vibes permeate through the new wave-inspired (are we getting Duran Duran and The Who mashup vibes here?) “Hidden Days” and “Almost Whatever Now” which somehow melds early The Rentals with Dinosaur Jr and OG pop punk. Things only get weirder with “To Be Untitled,” which opens with a guitar riff just slightly off from “Kiss Me” by Six Pence None the Richer but whose vocals are more The Polyphonic Spree. If your head’s not spinning by now, just listen to the rest.

We could go on naming all the bands each song sounds like, but that’s not the point. So many musical artists borrow and re-work music and claim it as original, but Vectralux not only own but it but proclaim there’s something new to be made and that the nostalgic-but-not-quite and one-key-short-of-recognizable feelings are valid as forms of expression. Do we not all, after all, tend to go with sounds and feeling we already love and recognize?

Vectralux is simply taking that to its logical conclusion and, really, to its most noble format. It can be unsettling, like “Vectralux” feeling real because it’s a combination or two words or Each Morning and the Morning Thereafter feeling like a familiar turn of phrase even though when you frown at it long enough, it’s basic nonsense. The English language owes Shakespeare a debt of gratitude for all the strange words and sayings he came up with, so why can’t acts like Vectralux do the same with music? Clever to devious proportions, any sort of music fan will find something they like on this album because, well, you sort of have to.

Each Morning and the Morning Thereafter is out now in digital and CD formats and can be streamed on Spotify or purchased on Bandcamp. The band will be releasing a vinyl version of the album in early 2022.
