As promised, here is the second part to my "How to celebrate Halloween, Witch-style," post from last week.
Last time we covered the history, why it was celebrated, the Christian involvement in the holiday and some of the mythology.
Linked here
For us, it's a time to celebrate the lives of the people we love who have passed on.
This time we're looking into how witches actually celebrate the day/s and some of the things I'll be doing this year to participate!
It's thought that the barrier between the living and the dead is supposed to be thinnest at this time because of the transition from Summer into Autumn/Fall and eventually Winter. The harvest season has finished at this point and the cold is setting in, killing off plants, vegetation, and even animals who at this point might be struggling to find food. Because of this, it's thought to be easier for us to reach our departed friends and they to reach us.
Tumblr media
Just, not like that...
-
One old method is to hold a meal for the dead. You don't need a lot of people for this, you could do it on your own.
You make up some food, invite your ancestors in and leave some food on a plate for them, perhaps with a drink.
We might also make Soul Cakes. Traditionally, people called, 'Soulers,' would travel from door to door asking for soul cakes in exchange for prayers, hence the modern tradition of Trick or Treat.
I've included a recipe here.
Perhaps the ancestors might care for a cake or two as well.
You could put up incense, though be careful if you have pets. My own furbaby starts to sneeze after a while if it's a strong one.
-
There's also the festive altar. You would decorate it with seasonal items, leaves, pine cones, acorns, I have an oak tree near where I live so I always look forward to the time when the acorns start to drop.
Tumblr media
Skull ornaments might be a good idea, (I'm not sure I'd recommend real bones since you don't know where they came from or what energies might still be attached,) as well as some fruits and/or vegetables to recognise the passing of time and how fortunate we are as the times begin to get darker and darker.
It works in some ways similar to the Harvest festivals that we had in school and in some ways like Thanks Giving. As well as recognising our dead, it's also a time to be thankful of what we have in our lives. Food. A roof. A blanket. The very smallest of things, they all count.
Tumblr media
There's the family altar too, which is wonderfully similar to a Mexican tradition that is performed for Dia De Los Muertos. I hope I spelt that right, I apologise if I haven't.
Photographs of deceased family members are placed on an altar or as the Mexicans call it, the Ofrenda, (I love that word,) as well as items that they loved in life and their favourite foods and drinks. You can include friends that you want to remember too, it's not just for family, some of us choose our family.
Don't worry if you don't have a photo or something they loved, just lighting a candle to them will do.
I actually have a post about candles being used this way so I'll link it here.
Tumblr media
Now might be considered a good time to get some Spiritwork in.
Communicate with your Diety/ies, get the Tarot out (I'll be doing this one,) meditate, perhaps on the holiday, the progression of time or anything you want really.
Tumblr media
It's a great time for Spellwork as well, especially since this year (2020) is going to be a full moon! I can't wait to make my next batch of moon water. It's normally pretty potent in calming tea spells anyway (for me at least, I'm fortunately and unfortunately blessed with skill in sleep magic.) If my regular stuff leaves people snoozing, this gonna leave em stoned outta their minds on magic!! Lol
-
You could visit your spirit's grave sites, though personally I find that a bit morbid. You could also get hold of a bag of tea lights and light one for each spirit you want to spend the holiday with. I do this one every year. I have seven people who mean a lot too me, so I get out seven tea lights, place them in a circle and light them for them.
My grandmother had a favourite scent, Lily of the Valley, so I light that incense for her.

-
Another activity you can try is praying for the souls who are stuck here to move on. Sadly, some spirits don't 'go on,' as they're supposed to. For this, I use Angel magic. The Angel Azrael has the job of finding departed souls and guiding them to Peace, so I always call on him for this.
Tumblr media
I don't fancy any of this happening, thank you.
Angels exist over a number of religions, and regardless of whether a person's faith recognises them, if you call, they will answer, no conversion required.
-
There are a great many other things to do for this holiday, so I'll add more as I think of them.
As a final note-
The food and drink that you leave out for the ancestors is not for the living to eat.
Once the night is over, you dispose of it. Besides, since it was left for the ancestors, they may have already collected the energy from it, so it wouldn't taste the same.
Think of it like drinking stale water. The benefits of consuming it are all still there but it feels dead, still.
I know that some might see this as wasteful though so it's in no way required of you, and if you still want to do this but don't have much, think like Santa Claus and his milk and cookies. You don't need to leave out a feast for them. A glass or water and a cookie/biscuit would be enough, but still, nothing is required. You do what's best for you. Above all, that's what the ancestors want for you.
Have a Blessed Samhain
😇🙏
