Normally linguistically we see someone who sees a word and doesn’t know how to pronounce it.  This is normal, and we shouldn’t make fun of someone for not having ever heard it or not realizing that’s what the word was.  WE HAVE ALL DONE IT, it is normal. I’m seeing the reverse a lot lately.  Where there’s a phrase that has made it into the popular spoken area and people don’t know where it’s from. Have you see someone say “cap” or “no cap” on a random spocial media?  They’ve heard it, they grasp its meaning, but they clearly don’t know where it is from. kappa.  an emote on twitch.  “kap” or “no kap” is what they’re meaning.  Shorthand for kappa or no kappa. I find it an interesting idiosyncracy of linguistics and writing.  No kap.

Mediation on Graffiti

From the moment humans put pen to papyrus scroll, they have been putting rock (or paint brush or spray can jet) to wall to create graffiti. The earliest graffiti dates back to the ancient civilizations of Egypt, Greece, and Rome—hundreds of messages professing love, heartache, and political opinions were found preserved along the walls of Pompeii and other ancient cities. It is amazing to think that the manner in which artists have created graffiti has changed so much throughout time but that their purpose for creating graffiti has remained largely the same. Early graffiti was etched with stone, then charcoal, chalk, paint, and eventually aerosol paint when it was developed in the 20th century. The materials used changed the look and style of graffiti, but the purpose behind graffiti has always been to express, to create, and to challenge. Often graffiti is used to express political and social opinions, throughout history and today. Graffiti is a subversive medium because it plays upon the relationship between public and private space. Graffiti artists decorate spaces that do not belong to them to create art and messages for a completely public audience. In many cities, graffiti is illegal and considered vandalization of property, yet in some places specific areas are permitted for graffiti, like UF’s Norman tunnel and the 34th Street wall. When is graffiti “graffiti” and when is it “street art”? Is graffiti still graffiti if it is permitted by an institution or city? Is graffiti qualified by its message or the manner in which it is produced? I think that there is a symbiotic relationship between “graffiti” and “street art” where one is sanctioned and the other rebellious, yet both expand our notions of public space and can be tools for social change. One of my favorite examples of political graffiti is Project Catcall, a project where 21 year old Sophie Sandberg uses chalk art and spocial media to protest street harrassment. Sophie writes the catcalls that men throw at her every day on the streets and buildings of New York City to raise awareness to the disgusting treatment women often endure while moving through public spaces.
