Season 4 Final Rankings!!
We finally got through season 4 and here are the final decisions going worst to best! Our individual ratings are out of 10 and the total points are out of 80.
Listen to our wrap up here
Here is our ranking for 15-22
22. Metamorphosis
Alex's Score: 3
Sarah’s Score: 3
Total Points: 12
I didn’t cap this one because it just looks terrible. Boring, terrible, pointless, skip!
21. I Know What You Did Last Summer
Alex's Score: 4
Sarah’s Score: 4
Total Points: 33
Tumblr media
This one starts off with a bad title and it just gets worse from there. Jared’s acting really let the whole episode down.
20. Family Remains
Alex's Score: 6
Sarah’s Score: 5
Total Points: 43
Tumblr media
Not the worst thing ever, but not a stand out as far as one off episodes go.
19. It's the Great Pumpkin, Sam Winchester
Alex's Score: 8
Sarah’s Score: 8
Total Points: 53
Tumblr media
I was surprised how high our individual scores are for the rest of this season. This was fine, I’m not mad I watched it.
18. Wishful Thinking
Alex's Score: 7
Sarah’s Score: 7
Total Score: 54
Tumblr media
Just for the f*cking giant teddy bear, this is better than number 19.
17.  Are You There God? It’s Me Dean Winchester
Alex's Score: 7
Sarah’s Score: 8
Total Points: 57
Tumblr media
This one is only saved by the final scene between Dean and Cas. It was perfectly filmed and perfectly acted.(Another banger title ffs)
16. Criss Angel is a Douchebag
Alex's Score: 7
Sarah’s Score: 7
Total Points: 58
Tumblr media
Barry Bostwick must have been tired after carrying this whole episode on his shoulders.
15. After School Special
Alex's Score: 9
Sarah’s Score: 9
Total Points: 60
Tumblr media
I am so sentimental about this episode, I don’t want to say anything bad about it. Shout out to Colin Ford and Brock Kelly, they both play Sam and Dean so well.
I just wanted to note that at this point in my list in the other seasons I would still be talking about some pretty bad episodes, but as you can see we’re already on the upswing. Maybe season 4 is good?
For the rest of the list:
14-6

4x22, Lucifer Rising
Critical theory: Fate, fathers, faith, futility.
Discussion point/question(s): Is the moment Cas says “we’re making it up as we go” the moment Dean falls in love? What do we think of the symbolism of Dean pushing the angel statue?
Key quotes: Bobby, “You are a better man than your daddy ever was. So you do us both a favour. Don’t be him.”; Cas, “Yeah, well, we’re making it up as we go.”
Further reading: “Yeah, well, we’re making it up as we go.” (@xofemeraldstars)
Dean pushing the angel to fall (@spnyouresostupid)
Remember, Cas moves because he lets Dean move him (@spnyouresostupid)
Cas lets Dean manhandle him. (@redwing via @deanwinchesterwebsite)
4x08 Lilith’s head on a plate / the wishes turn bad (@fictitiouslysane)
Dean’s lil head nod to show that he trusts Cas (@anakinism)
Discussion:
Where is the rest of the episode? They didn’t finish the episode. [This is a goof... kind of.]
[Do you feel scammed? Are you actually angry?] No, not angry. All the plot twists were hitting just right. Ruby, you’ve kinda seen it coming the whole time. It isn’t even a cliffhanger— [that is a cliffhanger!] But they didn't resolve anything. [I mean, Sam killed Lilith. They resolved that.] Why did they do that? Why did they leave it like that? [Because… Do you wanna watch the next episode?] Obviously (Iga) / yes but out of spite (Kai). Kai is actually legitimately angry. Iga thinks this is a good end to the season.
[The Dean trust gif]. Dean trusts Cas entirely, as soon as Cas hits the defiance switch, and Dean always knows when it is. The moment when Cas looks away and Dean dips into his eye line to bring him back is so so good.
[Cas lets Dean turn him around.] Kai, I can see why people went insane over these two. Because the only two people Dean has that level of trust with is Sam and Bobby, and he’s known them for years. He’s known Cas a few months. [And we still get the line "we’ve been through much together, you and I."] And they haven’t even been through that much. This was their first season together. [You have no idea.]
Can only imagine Sam’s thousands of trains of thought, Ruby’s manipulation, every time Dean questioned his judgement. He must feel so stupid. But Ruby was incredible. She played him so well. The Sam and Ruby / Dean and Cas parallel—Dean and Cas can read each other so well. Ruby can read Sam. Sam can’t read Ruby. And it was just her and Lilith. [And that is incredible. No one else knew! Alistair didn’t know!] And he tortured her! [She could have died!] But also at the end of the day it was right in front of them the whole time. Oh this demon has come to help you right as Azazel died? But they’ve had ‘monsters’ blur the lines before, Sam was primed to buy into this. Dean is more complicated, but he does get it sometimes too… but he never really trusted Ruby. They worked together one time and clearly hated it. Dean has always been more mistrustful of monsters, to be fair, which is why Sam dismissed him. It’s easy to see how it played out this way, but at the end of the day… Dean never trusted her.
[I will say. Dean wasn’t wrong but also he was wrong, you know? He was right about Ruby, but like. He used the wrong equation and got the right answer. And we all know he handled it wrong.] He made friends with that one demon and asked Sam not to kill her, and then Sam killed her. Ruby was around the whole time, saved Sam’s life multiple times, and still didn't buy it. [Yes, but I don’t think you’re factoring in the protectiveness enough. Dean maybe could trust a demon when he was alone in the room with the demon, but this is Sam. Maybe he saw the influence she had on him, and that’s what scared him.] But… he was right to be fair. She was influencing him. Iga is 100% on Dean’s side on this one. He never trusted her, and he was right. [I do agree, he was right not to trust her. But Sam did. And by not trusting her, Sam sees that as Dean not trusting him. And again, maybe he was right not to here, but that just pushed Sam further and further down that path.]
Kai, not only were both of them the only ones who could start the apocalypse, but they were the only ones that could’ve stopped it, they were almost able to get through to each other. Iga, them being apart caused the apocalypse, them being together could’ve stopped it.
[Angel statute.] Kai, catboy behaviour. [Yes, but..?] (They’re scared.) [Say it. Someone say it.] Kai… I don’t know… He broke the angel? He made the angel fall? [He made the angel fall. Yes, he also broke it. He made it fall, and it broke] He was breaking things. But when he looked back they were fixed. But when he looked back at the angel statue, it never got fixed. It stayed fallen.
When Cas showed up again, it was right as Dean had given up. In hell he was too late, but he’s learnt. [Oh.] They were technically also too late here. [But he got Dean out.]
[Would anyone like to speak on Dean’s face at “we’re making it up as we go”? Or, indeed, “you’re a better man than your daddy ever was.” ?]
[Better man.] He made a face. No one has ever said that to him. And his real dad said it to him. Part of him didn’t believe it. [I think a lot of him didn’t believe it.] He doesn’t feel up to the task. He doesn’t feel strong enough. He made the right decision, he reached out and tried to fix it.
[Making it up.] We could see shit changing on the computer etc. but we already saw in the previous episode that they can’t change their fate, the situation just adapts to make fate still happen. [See I disagree. To me they did change something. They were never supposed to be there, they still broke out. Yes, they failed, but… they did something.] But the theme of the whole show is being stuck in the narrative. [I’m gonna say something spoilery. You’re not wrong. That is a/the theme. And by the end of the show, you’re right and I’m wrong. But, at the time this was written, the time this came out, I think I am right. They broke out of the narrative, they defied fate. It’s just, by the end of the show… no they didn’t.] So it was almost good writing. [Yes.]
The angels are funny though. The angels—at least the higher-ups—have been pro-apocalypse the whole time… because they’re bored? Is it because they’re bored?
Notes: Iga in Sam’s position would also smash.

One of my go-to comfort watches still holds up, I love it. If you want to know some of my very specific thoughts about Dean’s character in this episode, click here
13. The Monster at the End of This Book
Alex's Score: 8
Sarah’s Score: 8
Total points: 63

The introduction of Chuck is always a good time. We did have to ding it for a couple of things...but other than that it was still as good as I remember.
12. Death Takes a Holiday
Alex's Score: 8
Sarah’s Score: 8
Total Points: 64
Tumblr media
Tessa comes back and we get the definitive version of Alistar, a really good episode.
11. Sex and Violence
Alex's Score: 9
Sarah’s Score: 8
Total Points: 64
Tumblr media
This beat out Death takes a Holiday because of the amazing performance of the actor playing the siren. Pitch perfect, iconic and of course the bisexuality of it all.
10. In the Beginning
Alex's Score: 9
Sarah’s Score: 8
Total Points: 65
Tumblr media
A wild Matt Cohen appears! This is a touchstone episode, and it was done so well. All of the supporting actors really knocked it out of the park on this one. Great way to kick off the top 10
9. Jump the Shark
Alex's Score: 8
Sarah’s Score: 8
Total Points: 66
Tumblr media
We were waiting for Jake Able’s first appearance all season and it was worth it! Great storyline and another tragic Winchester.
8. Heaven and Hell
Alex's Score: 8
Sarah’s Score: 9
Total Points: 68
Tumblr media
Dumb title, great episode. MVP is definitely Julie McNiven, girl had allllllll the exposition.
7. Yellow Fever
Alex's Score: 9
Sarah’s Score: 9
Total Points: 70
Tumblr media
The episode that gave us the Eye of the Tiger blooper! Hilarious from start to finish, Jensen acting his ass off as usual. Plus we get to see creep little girl Lilith again!
6. When the Levee Breaks
Alex’s Score: 9
Sarah’s Score: 9
Total Points: 72
Tumblr media
Some of you might notice that his has 72 points and The Rapture has 71, so why is this at number 6? Because this is my list and I can do what I want!😁 The penultimate episode of the season gives us all of the feels, and the biggest blow out we’ve ever seen from the boys so far.
For the rest of the list:

Supernatural proves that it does finales so well. It’s heartbreaking, exciting, and that cliff hanger!
3. Monster Movie
Alex’s Score: 9
Sarah’s Score: 10
Total Points: 83
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Are you suprised this one is so high on our list? So are we! This episode was well shot, well acted, and just a great heartfelt homage to classic horror movies. When Supernatural can get the right balance of horror and comedy that might be when I love it the most. (Also it has one of my favorite Sam lines ever)
2. Lazurus Rising
Alex’s Score: 10
Sarah’s Score: 10
Total Points: 83
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Do I even need to explain this one? Just as good as I remember and beats out Monster Movie because of Cas. This is another one that just hits the sweet spot of what this show can be.
