written for @spnpocweek, day 6 (prompt: memories)
It was just after six when César awoke, smiling at the sight of Jesse, hair tousled and still snoring into his pillow.
Lazybones, César thought fondly, remembering a similar morning years ago, back in their hunting days, after a particularly grueling job in El Paso…
César had known that they needed to get up—they’d already found what appeared to be another case down in Zacatecas and had a long drive ahead of them—but Jesse, who wasn’t a morning person on the best of days, was particularly not so on that day.
“Just...five more minutes,” Jesse had mumbled, yawning as he attempted to pull the covers up over his head. “Give me...five more minutes, and then I’ll get up.”
César, already in a sitting position, had chuckled mid-stretch. “Mm-hm, of course you will, lazybones.”
“Lazybones?” Jesse had cracked open an eye to peer up in amusement. “Where’d you hear that?”
“What? It’s a perfectly good word!”
“Yeah, if you’re old. Pretty sure no one under the age of fifty actually says that anymore.”
“Ah, well, excuse me, Mr. Native English Speaker,” César had said, rolling his eyes. “Maybe you would prefer flojo? Or how about huevón?”
“How about coffee?” Jesse had said, grinning hopefully. “If you make us coffee, I’ll get the car ready after.”
“Fine, fine...Lazybones.”
Now, as César lay in bed next to his warm, still-sleeping husband, no monsters to hunt and nothing but another quiet day of tending their horses and enjoying retirement, he decided that maybe, just maybe, his bones were lazy, too.
“Just five more minutes,” he murmured to no one in particular, then snuggled closer to Jesse and went back to sleep.
