#spn 15x20 rewrite

Text
I rewrote the ending montage of 15x20 so that everything is almost the same but also, I think, a lot better -
...
DEAN: Enters Heaven. Finds Bobby outside of the Roadhouse. Has their conversation. Bobby points him towards the Impala, which is waiting for him on the road. Dean stands.
...
SAM: We see Sam standing next to a burning pyre; the wrapped body burning on it can only be Dean. As he stands in shocked silence, the first notes of "Carry On My Wayward Son" start to play. The song continues, a montage, as we watch what happens next.
...
SAM: Grieving Dean. He looks around the bunker. It's empty; no Cas, no Jack, and now no Dean. Sam decides that he refuses to isolate himself anymore. He packs his things and leaves. He gives the bunker one final look before closing the door. The bunker lights goes dark behind him. He'll pass the key on to someone else.
...
DEAN: He walks away from Bobby and the Roadhouse towards the Impala. Runs his hand over the black finish as he walks slowly to the driver's door. He opens it and gets in. He's in Heaven now, and he's supposed to rest; but he didn't want to die, and he's not ready to stop living- changing- growing. He starts the car and drives. He has a lot to think about.
...
SAM: He knocks on a house's front door. He looks nervous; he's holding all of his personal effects in the bag on his shoulder. Everything he wanted to keep of Dean's, Cas's and Jack's is in the trunk of the Impala. When the door opens, Eileen is on the other side. They look at each other, both silent. Their expressions are of unbearable sadness and infathomable hope. After a moment, they embrace. Both are crying.
...
DEAN: He's been driving for a long time. He doesn't know if it's been moments or years. The scenery shifts from mountains, to boundless fields of yellow grass, to dense and lively forest, to a desert, to an ocean cliffside. He's been thinking; thinking about what he wants. What he thinks he deserves.
...
SAM: We see Sam and Eileen host a dinner party with Donna, Jody and the girls. We see Garth visiting with Bess and their kids. Sam and Eileen look happy. There are photos of everyone they've ever loved hanging on the walls throughout their home.
...
DEAN: The Impala rumbles to a stop on a bridge overpassing a mountain stream. Dean gets out of the car and walks to the rail to gaze out over the flowing water. He hopes that Sam is doing well without him, but Sam's happiness isn't Dean's priority anymore. Dean wants his own happiness. He's had time to think, and he's ready to go find something of his own, something he wants for himself. He can't be alive anymore, but that doesn't have to mean his journey is over. Thing is, he doesn't want to travel it alone.
...
SAM: Sam and Eileen have a baby. We watch as they raise it. The baby grows from an infant to a young boy. Sam smiles with fondness and sadness at a framed photo of himself, Dean, and Bobby sitting on the hood of the Impala while he carries his son to his bedroom. When Sam tucks the little boy into bed, we see that the child's personalized headboard reads "DEAN". We can assume that Sam is going to live a long, happy life.
[The last notes of "Carry On" plays as the camera rises, panning up and away from Sam and Dean Jr., before returning to Heaven; to Dean. There is no music anymore, just the ambient sounds of the rushing stream and the forest.]
DEAN: The camera is on Dean in profile. He's still looking out over the water, arms braced against the railing. He looks content, and a little determined, but not fulfilled. It's not over, yet.
Suddenly, though we hear nothing, Dean seems to sense a new presence behind him. He straightens, and a knowing expression crosses his face. The camera pans to follow Dean as he turns around. There, in the middle of the bridge, standing next to the Impala, is Castiel.
Castiel gazes at Dean with a warm, soft smile, and even softer eyes. He's been waiting a long time to see Dean Winchester again, but the wait was worth every single moment. Dean is every bit as beautiful as Castiel remembers.
CAS: "Hello, Dean."
The camera is back on Dean, showing his head and shoulders with face centered in shot. He stares past the camera at Cas for a moment, eyes filling with wonder, before a broad smile breaks across his face. He looks to be overflowing with love. This might be the happiest we have ever seen him.
[Fade to black. Credits.]

Favourite spn fanfic about post 15x20 or rewrite of the ending?
I’ve always loved “The Goldenrod Revisions” by aethylas as an alternative ending, it’s in a script format btw
I have not read that, I'll have to give it a look. I'm not sure what my favorite is. I actually haven't read a whole lot, and I'm struggling to separate them. I know there's been some good ones.

oh thanks for the reply! yeah it was the poll - i KNEW the monologue was long. too long (and shouldn't happen at all because dean shouldn't die but i am letting it slip here). BUT it never ever, for over 2 years, since november 19th 2020, it never occured to me it was 8 minutes long. it's 1/5 of the episode. literally WHAT. this information has been haunting me since i sent that ask days ago.
anyway like i said i would definitely like to read some more thoughts about dabbnatural because there used to be a lot of people posting about him as a writer in a good way and after the finale it was a hatefest, (generally speaking). his episodes ARE enjoyable in general so WHY did he write the finale which is you know. bad. very.
i tend to be tinhatty when talking about the finale but it boils down to the one big question of: "what happened?! what happened that the finale is so bad, so not fitting into the rest of the season?!" and it makes me mad and insane. i guess we'll never know the truth.
definitely gonna check that tag of yours though. i need more brainworms.
every time i've tried to answer this in the past almost-four-months i end up with a multiple pages word draft that is basically just a timeline of US politics and spn production schedules from 2016-2020 with source citations and it looks completely bonkers.
i think the extremely blunt thing is that i see a lot of destiel fans assume there was some rainbow capitalist gravy train the CW could have ridden to the bank if only they weren't wildly homophobic and hadn't stopped destiel. but the thing is that the cash money and ratings desired by the networks are with the GA folks.
probably the best proof against a shutdown rewrite to remove destiel is the existence of walker. the CW was betting on it as a "safe" show but greenlit without a pilot in 2019 to air in 2020. and a metric fuck ton happened in 2020 that made it a less marketable show than initially expected when it aired in 2021. if they were looking to pick up viewers from the spn finale and wanted the "destiel demo" then walker would not be their follow-on choice.
but in terms of the actual writing of the finale itself? well. i'm gonna tinhat that the 40yr driving gap was intentional. you can do a lot with a 40 yr amorphous gap in time and space traveling along the axis mundi and seeing the heavenly way in your chevrolet. there is actually quite a bit of flexibility in the story for offshoots or continuations when you have a gap like that. also like. another ep dabb wrote for s15 was 15x10 "the heroes' journey" which is pretty much a big ol blueprint for a "dean retires" ending.
but circling back, i think 15x20 is really in service of a very final ending with which they can shuffle the parts of the audience demo that they want over to walker when it starts airing.
as to just thoughts on dabbnatural... at this point it's become this sprawling madness where i'm a genuine fan who has sought out his non-spn work (RIP resi, you were taken from us too soon). i think he really wrote one of the thesis quotes of the show... "it's just people trying to do their best in a world where it's all to easy to do their worst."
i have no idea if this answered anything

I love how the finale was TFW 2.0 doing some Spring Cleaning in the bunker for 40 minutes with family occasionally stopping in, couldn’t think of a better ending :)

another fixit:
15x20 is actually the finale for the multiverse show 'Supernatural' in The French Mistake 'verse starring au!jensen and au!jared. meanwhile in the OG' verse, Sam is dating Eileen and they're helping Dean find a way to rescue Cas from The Empty.

It's different this time. That's what Jack had said. The Empty took his body, Dean, removing his essence from this world. I can't bring him back like last time, and interfering in The Empty's realm would be dangerous.
It made a detached sort of sense; Jack didn't want to end up like Chuck. Could be a slippery slope, that hands-on approach. But if there was anything worth an exception, it was this. Cas deserves to be saved. And if Jack won't fight then it's up to Dean.
Which is how he came to be standing in an old familiar barn in Pontiac, Illinois, under a blue moon at midnight. It had taken months to gather all the spell components - the incantations and instructions in various ancient texts, smoke of a Crossroads Demon, and a piece of someone who had returned from The Empty; Jack couldn't bring Cas back but that doesn't mean he wasn't willing to help. He gave Dean one of his Nephilim feathers - not that he's technically a Nephilim anymore, but he kept his wings. Dean has no idea what they look like though because they're invisible to the human eye.
Now he has everything.
He actually had most of what he needed already: Cas' blood (from the handprint he left on Dean's jacket the night he..); something of Angelic origin for a baseline element (an Angel blade); an object imbued with personal significance (the mixtape Dean had made him years ago, that he found while searching Cas' room for anything); and Dean.
Dean is the key piece of the puzzle here, because Cas lives within him. Kind of. Cas' Grace not only rebuilt Dean's body after Hell, it was gifted to him over the years, healing him time and time again. And from what's he's learned the Grace never fully left him after doing it's job. It hung around, orbiting Dean's soul (not unlike Cas, Dean thought, and it was a bittersweet thing). Maybe it's the source of their 'profound bond' but Dean knows what they share isn't just some side effect.
What they have is real, Cas was right about that.
In short: Cas' body may be in The Empty but his essence still exists outside of it, and Dean's going to use his connection with Cas to find him.
He speaks the incantation to open the portal - a language so old it has no name - as sigils flare to life around him. The red smoke swims in the brass bowl, covering the patch of Dean's bloodied jacket and other items. The feather begins to pulse with golden light, illuminating its shape.
As he finishes reciting the spell, a wet black flame erupts from the bowl, engulfing everything and snuffing out the warm brilliant light of Jack's feather. The sight alone fills Dean with dread, hurling his mind back to the night that thing stole Cas away. But he soldiers on, reaching out to touch the temperature-less globular flames growing tall in front of him, and a feeling of emptiness pervades him.
If this is what it feels like just being near The Empty, then being in that place isn't gonna be some cake walk.
Taking a deep breath to try and steady himself, Dean hesitates as his shoulder starts to burn. It's an odd sensation, growing stronger but not painful. He moves to shift aside his flannel—but the long-gone handprint shines through his layers of clothing, glowing pale blue.
It's the bolster of courage he needs, and with a smile playing on his lips and in his heart, Dean reaches out, knowing for certain that he's not alone in this, and soon Cas won't be either.
The world inks out to nothing, and he's falling.. but who's to say he's not flying? It worked, and he's going to find Cas and bring him home where he belongs.

Never Say Goodbye
Summary: Nightmares are hard to banish, even when the light returns.
A/N: My very dear friend, @deanswaywardgirl has been having a tough time lately and missing Dean a lot. So, she requested a comfort fic that would make Dean's death a dream, so he can still give her the comfort she needs. I was more than happy to oblige. I hope this helps, sweetie and that it's what you wanted/needed. ❤️
Warnings: Discussion of the events of Dean's death in the finale. Sadness. Comfort. Fluff.
Pairings: Dean Winchester x Y/N
Word Count: 893
Tumblr media
"Y/N!"
You came awake with a start, the echoes of Dean's goodbyes so loud in your ears you couldn't comprehend the words he was saying as he leaned over you.
Worry caused vertical double lines to form between his brows, as they always did when he was concerned.
"It's okay, Sweetheart, you were just having a bad dream." The bed dipped slightly as he sat down beside you. He pushed your hair back off your shoulder and thumbed away the tears that had fallen while you slept. "Are you okay?"
You stared at him in disbelief. He was here. He was sitting beside you, the heat from his body warming your frozen limbs. You reached up and brushed your fingertips across his forehead and down his cheek, nails rasping against the light stubble there.
Dean took hold of your hand and pressed your fingers against his lips. The warm breath you could feel escaping his mouth made tears spring to your eyes again. He was here.
You launched yourself at him, wrapping your arms so tightly around his neck that he grunted a little.
"Y/N, that's a little tight." He said, half laughing, half choking.
You let go but only to scooch around behind him on the bed. He twisted around to try and figure out what you were doing as you pushed his dark grey Henley up his broad back.
"What are you doing?" He asked, completely dumbfounded.
Still not answering, afraid to speak, you spread your hands wide across his shoulders, marveling at the expanse of smooth, unblemished skin you found there.
As you took in the sight, and felt the heat of him, the strength and vitality of him thrumming beneath your hands a sob broke through and choked you. Before you could stop them, tears and sobs were pouring out of you as you wrapped your arms as far as they would go around his shoulders, pressing your cheek between his shoulder blades.
"Hey!" Dean twisted in your arms until he was facing you and you climbed into his lap, tears soaking his shirt, while you listened to the steady beating of his heart.
Dean seemed to accept that you just needed to cry, so he simply readjusted you both until he was leaning back against the headboard of your bed with you securely sheltered in his arms, his big hand sweeping up and down your arm.
As your sobs turned to hiccups and then to shuddery breaths, Dean tilted your chin up with one finger. He kissed your cheeks where the tracks of your tears were still visible.
"Do you want to tell me about the nightmare, Sweetheart?"
You shook your head but finally spoke. "It was so horrible. It was so real." You paused for a moment and then spoke in a whisper. "You died." New tears sprang up at the memory of watching the life leave Dean's eyes. You shuddered and clung to him again, with your head tucked under his chin.
Your voice was wavering and thin when you spoke. "You were...you and Sam were fighting these vamps and one of them threw you, and impaled you on this like, this piece of rebar and...and...you couldn't move and there was no one left to save you, no Chuck, no Jack...and all I could do was watch you say goodbye."
You wrapped your arms around him again, holding as tightly as you could willing away those images and again finding peace from the strong, warrior's heart you could hear beating under your ear.
Dean held you tighter, and kissed the top of your head. "Well, it was just a bad dream, Y/N. I'm here, Sweetheart, and I'm not going anywhere." His voice was reassuring and strong, deep and warm and it flooded over you, soothing you and bringing you peace.
He pulled back so that he could look at you. "We won, Y/N. We won. Chuck is dead, our fates are ours, and we can do anything we want now." His smile was bright and the happiness you could see there made it impossible not to feel brighter as well.
He leaned down and pressed a soft, slow kiss to your lips, gentle and undemanding. It was a promise. A promise of the tomorrows to come, a promise of a life lived well and together, a promise of holidays and birthdays, anniversaries and beginnings, so many promises wrapped up in one sensual sweep of his mouth against yours.
"I love you." He whispered against your neck as he trailed kisses across your skin. "So much."
More tears came to your eyes, but this time they were tears of joy. You tilted your head back, giving him easier access.
"I love you too, Dean Winchester. Never say goodbye." It was a confession and a demand all in one breath.
Dean brought his head up so he could stare deeply into you, like he was branding your soul with his words. His forest green eyes were serious but warm and he pressed his forehead to yours.
"Never."

Alright, this project now has an official Tumblr.
A group of fans on Discord are currently working on a full rewrite of Supernatural. The working name for the project is Wayward Road. It starts from Season 1 and fixes plot holes, weird story decisions, issues with diversity and representation, and of course the series finale.
The fandom is involved in the writing this time - the Discord has 16 members. Also We would love to hear any ideas or headcanons you have. Qa
Finally, if you're interested please reblog this. Rewriting a 15 season show is a big project and we need as much help as we can get.
Our tracking tags are #waywardroad #waywardwriters

Could the same SPN finale make a little more sense with some additions/changes?
I’ve had the idea for this post stuck in my head for days now, but with every new conspiracy theory and every new eventuality in the fandom, it became difficult to cool down enough to write something less ship-related and more narrative-focused.
What Supernatural and non-SPN fans have to understand is that a lot of us have expressed disappointment and frustration after 15x20, not because of Destiel (that’s just one part of the whole problem), but because the finale doesn’t make sense. Everything was leading up to something beautifully crafted until the end of 15x19. Beyond that, it’s hard to understand what happened. The story rendered all the character growth irrelevant, invalidated the themes of free will and “family don’t end in blood”, regressed to the original brother codependency they spent 15 years trying to overcome, made a queer non-binary character in a male vessel and a deaf female character basically disposable, and kept the show’s reputation of queerbaiting and misogyny until its very last breath.
That’s not going out with a bang! At least not a positive one. We all were ready to mourn Supernatural, but we wanted to feel proud of its legacy, and somehow TPTB managed to tarnish that legacy in less than 45 minutes. What a way to ruin the other more than 13,600 minutes of story!
It doesn’t matter who is to blame (The CW, Robert Singer, Andrew Dabb). It doesn’t matter why it happened (homophobia, censorship, marketing for Walker, bad writing). What matters is that at the end of the day, the finale that aired is what we got and that’s going to hurt for a long time. It hurts even more when we realize that the same finale could have easily made more sense, even without being perfect.
That’s what I want to do in this post. I want to show you how things would have been less jarring (for the fandom), while still keeping the goal to please the general audience.
Before I begin rewriting 15x20, I have to mention that I talked to my conservative boomer sister about the finale. She hasn’t watched the second half of season 15 yet (she’s waiting for Netflix to have it), but she’s been watching the show for a long time (she introduced me to it 8 years ago). She’s the perfect example of a viewer from the general audience. Loves the show but doesn’t give a second thought to it and definitely isn’t paying attention to character development or themes. Doesn’t engage with fandom, actors, or any of the show’s social media. Pure GA! When I told her the series finale had aired, she asked me about it and I refused to give her spoilers. Because of that, she told me the ending SHE wanted. She said she would be happy with either of two possibilities: the boys retiring and finally living a normal life OR they going to heaven and finding peace at last. She saw Sam and Dean as a unit, which means: both retiring or both going to heaven. AND she saw Cas as part of that, too. She wasn’t so sure about Jack. And for her, we could use the “Eileen who?” and it wouldn’t be a joke. She didn’t remember her.
NOW IT’S TIME TO WRITE A NEW VERSION OF 15X20 (KEEPING 15X18 AND 15X19 EXACTLY THE SAME AS THEY AIRED). This will be a very long post:
The opening remains almost the same. No “Carry on my wayward son” to induce feels. Too soon and too predictable! (Reasoning: Everyone was expecting it to play right there, so it would bring more tears at the end)
In the opening, after the scene where Jack says “People won’t need to pray to me or sacrifice to me”, we also see the scene from 15x19 where he says “I won’t be hands on”. Then we see the rest of the opening as it was. (Reasoning: People needed to be reminded that Jack would NOT intervene and that’s why later on, he would NOT save Dean).
We get the same montage, but when Sam takes a break from his morning run, we see him reading a message on his phone. A simple: “Hey Sam, what’s new?” from Eileen. Sam smiles fondly and begins to type a response we don’t get to see. The next scene continues the same, Sam making breakfast. (Reasoning: A text was a very simple way to show that Eileen was alive and still in communication with Sam).
The montage slowly ends as Sam enters the library (not after he sits down). He seems to be talking on the phone but we only hear an “I’ll tell him. Bye”. As he walks towards the table, he tells Dean: “Charlie says hi. Mentioned something about Stevie’s perfect scrambled eggs we have to try.” Dean’s answer is “Awesome!” (Reasoning: Just ONE line was needed to unbury Charlie and her girlfriend. ONE LINE).
Sam sits down, opens his laptop and everything continues the same. The title card shows for the last time.
YOU SEE? In the first 4 minutes they could have acknowledged that THREE WOMEN were alive and safe: Eileen, Charlie and Stevie. It wasn’t hard! Don’t blame bad writing on Covid! Now let’s continue.
Sam and Dean arrive at the Pie Fest just the same. Dean goes to get some “damn pie” and Sam takes out his phone. He dials and when someone picks up, he says “Hey, Jody, how are ya?” We don’t hear the rest of the conversation. The scene moves to Dean coming with his 6 portions of pie. Dean sits down and Sam tells him, “Talked to Jody. The other hunters haven’t had much work lately.” “That’s good, isn’t it?”, Dean says. All we get from Sam is “Yeah.” So, Dean looks at him and asks “what’s wrong?” like it happened in the episode. (Reasoning: Again, a couple of lines to make sure the people that were killed in 15x18 are safe and remembered by the boys in 15x20. Why is this important? Because they’re family!)
The conversation about Sam’s sad face happens the same. Sam is the one that mentions Cas and Jack. (Reasoning: Because this episode was so Sam-centered, it’s obvious he was the protagonist in the finale. If we see him communicating with Eileen, Charlie, and Jody, then it’s NORMAL, even expected of him to be the one to bring up Cas and Jack). Without these additions, it’s harder for people to understand that most of the finale was NOT from Dean’s POV but from Sam’s.
Dean’s “if we don’t keep living, then all that sacrifice is gonna be for nothing” stays the same. (Reasoning: I believe it’s necessary that the show sticks to the importance of “letting go” and “what is dead should stay dead” for the first time ever because the message is “even when you lose someone you love, you can still find some form of happiness and keep living, for you and for them, because that’s what they would have wanted”. Bringing someone back means “I can’t live without you”, and that’s just more codependency. It’s how the demon deals began in the Winchester family –Mary being the first one to do it. This would explain why Dean didn’t ask Jack to bring Cas back, as he asked Chuck. He understood Jack was NOT going to interfere anymore and accepted it. Besides, when Cas saved Dean from hell, Dean thought he didn’t deserve to be saved. This time that Cas saved him, Dean finally feels worthy enough to accept that YES, HE DESERVED TO BE SAVED ALL ALONG, just as much as he deserved to be loved by that angel of the Lord. In this scene, Dean also says that the pain is not gonna go away, which means that from HIS PERPECTIVE, it still hurts that Cas is not there. The problem is that the finale is not showing his POV but Sam’s.
Sam pies Dean on the face just the same. (Reasoning: That part was just to avoid ending the scene on a sad note).
Everything related to the case happens exactly the same. (Reasoning: At this point, people don’t really care about the MoTW, they care about Sam and Dean).
NOTE 1: The case is important to show that even when the Winchesters are finally free of Chuck’s influence, they CHOOSE to keep hunting. It isn’t something they do out of revenge or because it is their destiny anymore. Maybe they were forced into the life at first, but they’ve learned to find joy in saving people. Being hunters is who they are. However, the fact that a job application was shown on Dean’s desk is also important because it means he was willing to explore what else was there for him besides hunting. Maybe he could find a balance? Maybe he was thinking it was time to quit? We will never know! The thing is that Sam only finds out about it when he goes into Dean’s room after his brother is dead, so maybe that’s when it hits him that Dean wanted to explore his options, and Sam starts to think it’s time for him to do the same.
NOTE 2: I believe the masks the vampires are wearing is something we can blame on covid. If they had their faces covered, it was easier to use people from the SPN crew for some scenes, instead of using more actors unnecessarily.
NOTE 3: When Sam and Dean arrive at the barn, we get 3 visuals to remember Cas in the same scene (those are for the fandom, not for the general audience): a) the barn, obviously; b) the bag that resembles Cas’ trenchcoat so much that many people thought that’s what it was; and c) two feathers hanging on Dean’s right when he opens the trunk.
The scene with the throwing star happens the same. (Reasoning: The episode is still told from Sam’s point of view, so it makes sense that he fondly sees his brother as a man child).
Jenny the vampire? Uhhh… I mean, it’s not the best piece of writing I’ve ever seen, but it’s not the worst, so okay. That stays the same. (Reasoning: There is none, but she’s not what really ruined the finale, so whatever!)
Dean still dies impaled on a rebar. (Reasoning: OK. HERE ME OUT!!! I hate as much as everyone else that Dean is killed. I think it’s lazy writing, but that’s what we got and I can’t change that in this re-write, so if killing Dean is what we have to work around, then, memes aside, death by rebar is better and here’s why. There’s no one to blame for Dean’s death: no Chuck (the boys were willingly hunting even after Chuck was defeated), no vampires (they were all killed and were no real threat, so it was impossible for Sam to begin a quest for revenge against all vampires. What was Sam going to blame? A rebar? Can you kill it? Hunt it? NO. It was an ordinary death, a stupid accident. Just like any person can die at any moment by slipping on a banana peel. Is it a good death? No, but it’s good to know he doesn’t die trying to save Sam or Cas, because Dean Winchester is NOT willing to give up his life in exchange for anyone else’s anymore.
Sam takes out his phone and says he’ll call for help, but his phone is more visible to the audience. He dials and it’s almost to his ear when Dean stops him and Sam hesitantly hangs up. (Reasoning: People have complained that Sam didn’t call an ambulance, but actually he tried to. It’s just that people missed that part, maybe?)
After Sam puts his phone back in his pocket and says “OK” to Dean, he adds, “I’ll pray to Jack”. Dean’s immediate answer is: “No hands on, remember?” “But Dean”, Sam says, and Dean interrupts him with “OK listen to me” and tells Sam what to do with the kids they rescued. (Reasoning: Jack is God now and how come Sam didn’t remember? The viewers remembered, so it was necessary to include a line that ruled the option out and that showed Dean didn’t want Jack to intervene. The rest was fine).
The lines “You knew it was always gonna end like this for me. It was supposed to end like this, right?” disappear completely from Dean’s monologue. (Reasoning: This is the most problematic part of Dean’s dying speech. He fought God and earned free will, he is no longer controlled by fate or destiny. Accepting that he is supposed to die on a hunt regresses his character development and denies his desire to keep living. This was a total mistake and should be removed).
Instead, if going to heaven is the ending TPTB wanted to give Dean, at least he should say something more empowering. Sam tells him that both of them are going to take the kids somewhere safe. Dean answers and the scene follows like this: “No. Sammy, we made our choice, didn’t we?”, he smiles with difficulty. “We were free to write our own story and we did. We decided to keep saving people, hunting things. Because it’s what we love despite the risks.” (Reasoning: If Dean’s going to die it doesn’t have to feel like it was always meant to be that way. He should die knowing that he exerted his free will until his last breath).
The rest of the dialogue between Sam and Dean happens almost the same. Except that instead of Dean saying “‘cause when it all came down to it, it was always you and me. It’s always been you and me”, he says “’cause when it all came down to it, we’ve always had each other’s backs. Always.” And instead of Sam saying “Don’t leave me”, he says “I still can try to save you.” (Reasoning: It sounds way less codependent without diminishing the importance of their love and support for each other).
Besides, let’s change Dean’s “I’m not leaving you” for “You don’t have to be alone. You’ve still got family.” The rest stays the same word by word. (Reasoning: Dean reminds Sam that “family don’t end in blood” and there are still lots of people out there who love Sam and will be with him).
“I love you so much, my baby brother” stays exactly the same. (Reasoning: Dean always had trouble to express the big L word. I always believed and said many times that before Dean could say “I love you” to Cas or any other character, he had to say it to Sam. So, this is important as part of Dean speaking his truth).
The last part when Dean insists Sam tell him that it’s okay stays the same. (Reasoning: It’s the final moment when the codependency cycle breaks. No more running in circles).
The forehead touch between them stays the same. (Reasoning: I think I would do something similar if my sister were dying. I know there are w*ncest shippers out there, but it shouldn’t matter because the moment feels appropriate for that kind of goodbye).
See? There are changes but not too many. That’s why I’ve been saying that it was easier to get it right, yet they still managed to screw it up.
The second montage stays the same. (Reasoning: Life goes on, but of course Sam has to mourn).
The call about a case in Austin remains the same. (Reasoning: It’s the only part of the episode where someone from the found family is mentioned, so I think that Donna’s name is perfect in that moment. However, without the other additions I’ve made in this re-write, that off-hand mention feels too little. Its purpose was to tell the viewers that if Donna was alive, so were the others, but the way the episode was executed gave us an isolated Sam, incapable of having friends and a family without Dean).
After 30 minutes of Sam’s POV, let’s finally see the last bit of Dean’s POV that we’ll ever get.
Dean arrives in Heaven and Bobby receives him. All their conversation stays almost the same, except that after mentioning Rufus and before saying “and your mom and dad…”, Bobby adds an “Ellen and Jo let me borrow their place”. (Reasoning: If you’re gonna put the man outside the Harvelle’s place, at least mention them for Jack’s sake!).
Besides, after Bobby tells Dean that Sam will be along and that time in heaven is different, Dean gives a small smile and says, “Well, there’s no rush. I want him to have a long, happy life.” Bobby answers with: “I would expect nothing less from you, boy” and tells him he got everything he could ever want, etc., just like it happened in the episode, and finishes by asking “What are you gonna do now, Dean?” (Reasoning: It’s important we know for sure that Dean is NOT codependent anymore and that he doesn’t expect to have a miserable afterlife just because his brother is not there yet).
Instead of saying “I think I’ll go for a drive” Dean says, “I think I know what I want” and walks towards baby. Bobby still tells him to have fun. (Reasoning: “Know what I want” is ambiguous enough to help us introduce the last piece of the puzzle, the one thing Dean’s wanted for many seasons and has never been able to express).
 The biggest change is coming:
Dean gets on the Impala and has a moment of silence while he contemplates the wheel. He begins to pray: “Hey, Cas, you got your ears on? I hear you’ve been busy working on this updated Heaven with Jack. You were right about him, Cas. You had faith in him and he saved us all. You could always see the best in everyone, even when they couldn’t see it themselves. Even when I couldn’t see it myself. There’s so much I want to tell you. Maybe you can visit sometime. I hope prayer’s still a thing up here.” (Reasoning: Dean’s side of the confession was unaddressed and that was terrible writing. If there was no way to get him to speak his truth textually, at least take him as close to it as possible).
We listen to a flutter of wings and a “Hello, Dean” from the back seat. We don’t see Cas, but the camera shows us Dean’s cocky smile and he says “Took you long enough.” He turns around slowly. End of scene. (Reasoning: The flutter of wings confirms that angels have their wings back and ties that loose end. The final “hello, Dean” was highly anticipated and it made sense. If Misha couldn’t be there to film, for whatever reason, or if the problem was the kind of conversation Dean and Cas would have, then don’t show it, but leave the door open. Let us know that the two characters were reunited and will talk, but whatever Dean has to say is so private that it’s not for us to hear, only for Cas.
We finally hear “Carry on my wayward son” and get a montage that begins with Sam playing with his kid. Then we see Dean driving, super happy, and Sam living his life to the fullest. We still get Sam’s Blurry Wife, BUT… we see pictures of Eileen in the living room (not just of John, Mary, Sam, and Dean). We also see photos of Jody, Donna, Charlie, and AU!Bobby. (Reasoning: FAMILY DON’T END IN BLOOD).
The scene where Sam is wearing the party wig and looks miserable inside the Impala is cut and nobody talks about it ever again because it never existed. We get a scene of Sam teaching his son how to fix the car instead. (Reasoning: First of all, don’t give Sam a life where years later he’s still in pain. Second of all, the fucking wig was a crime).
Sam’s dying scene stays the same. The only thing is that his son signs a couple of phrases to him before actually speaking. (Reasoning: More confirmation that Dean Jr. is Eileen’s son).
We hear the final “Evanescence-like Carry on my wayward son”. Again we see the photos and there’s family other than the Winchesters there. (Reasoning: Obvious at this point).
The rest is exactly the same. The show began with two brothers and it’s okay if the last scene is with the two brothers reunited in Heaven. At this point, the other parts of the story are acceptable enough for us to feel happy that they get to see each other again after years of a happy (after)life.
Now look me in the eye and tell me this was too hard to execute. I still think that bad writing is a thing we can’t deny here, adding to the possible meddling of the Network. Maybe Dabb wanted us to hate the finale because he couldn’t get away with what he truly wanted. If that was his intention, then kudos to him. He and The CW really gave us a finale that only 30% of the fandom liked.
I hope you guys have enjoyed this and it helps to give you some peace of mind. In my heart, this was the finale we got. It wasn’t perfect, but it didn’t drop the ball either.

Nostalgia
Tumblr media
Rated: G | AO3 link | Words: 1253 | No Beta | Tags: Established Castiel/Dean Winchester, Fear, Nostalgia, References to The Empty, Human Castiel (Supernatural)
Summary: On a drive out of Chicago, the boys stop at an old familiar barn on the outskirts of Pontiac, Illinois. Ideally, it'd bring back fond memories. But for Cas, he's still struggling with the last memory he had of the place.
EXCERPT
“You’re supposed to be asleep,” he said to Dean, glancing over to him.
Dean ignored Cas as they passed by some traffic cones left by the side of I-55.
Cas reached over and tapped Dean on the arm and Dean finally turned to face him.
“Take exit 197,” he instructed nodding at a sign they were coming up on.
EXIT 197
PONTIAC
FLANAGAN
1 MILE
Cas hadn’t been paying much attention to the signs, but now he understood why Dean suddenly took interest.
Nodding, Cas moved over to the travel lane as they passed another field, and a sign that indicated the exit was half a mile away. A knot began to form in his stomach.
“Take a right at the end of the ramp,” Dean said as Cas slowed down.
“I know where to go.”
Things looked different on the ground versus how Cas originally came into the area — and at night, with his eyesight now nothing special, things did look exceptionally foreign — but he still knew where to go.
“Do you think it’s still there?” he asked.
Dean sat back in his seat as they headed down Route 116.
“I hope so.”

How I would have ended Supernatural
15x16: Drag Me Away (From You)
Condense/cut most of the Monster of the Week stuff and instead focus on the Chuckmara storyline [that was told in 15x17] and possibly add some more connection between Jack and Amara for foreshadowing purposes
Keep the parts where we find out that this is the only world left and that Jack will die
15x17: Unity
Condense/cut some of the beginning and introduce Billie's master plan
Billie opens Deaths Book and Team Free Will discover it to be useless but formulates a plan anyway.
About halfway through the episode, Jack explodes in the Empty (and why not do this before a comercial break for dramatics)
Have Cas's goodbye speech and sacrifice
Have Sam and Jack discover everyone gone
Still end the episode with Sam calling Dean and Dean not answering
15x18: Despair
Sam and Jack go back to the bunker and find that Dean hasn't moved from that spot on the floor
Dean fully explains what happened, and the three of them sit on the floor and mourn the loss of their family member. They do a small "service" where Castiel's name is carved into the table.
Then we move into their acknowledgement that everyone is gone
Keep the part where the find Miracle, because it's wholesome
Lucifer sneaks in, pretending to be Cas on the phone (running up the staircase clip) and he and Michael do their thing, minus creating a new Death
Flesh out that storyline and possibly emphasize the themes of sons loyal to their fathers and brothers who aren't
End the group going to whatever location to trap God
15x19: Inherit the Earth
Dedicate a good portion of this episode to fighting God and dealing with Michael, using more than fists (I'm talking angel blades at the very least) and dialogue more clever than repeating "seriously guys, stay down"
Right before Jack is able to take away Chuck's godliness (?) Chuck does something powerful (something that only a very powerful being could do) that ends up killing Dean
I don't think Dean's death should necessarily be a sacrifice, but I think it just makes sense that since they're fighting such a powerful being that they be unable to fully keep up, if that makes sense
Jack does his thing and the "we're not gonna kill you" speech, and Sam cries over Dean and does his little speech
Jack becomes the new God and brings people back
Sam and Jack hold an Endgame-esque hunter's funeral for Dean with a ton of familiar faces (Eileen, Jody, Other Dimention People, etc.)
Fade to black; it's finale time
15x20: Carry On
The Road So Far, but it's the entire song (if not extended a bit) and recaps all 15 seasons starting with "Dad's on a hunting trip"
Open on Sam and Eileen in the bunker with Miracle and show their routine and whatnot; casually show that Jack's name has been added to the table, and there's some sort of tribute to Dean in the library or map room
I would even be on board with them going to the pie-fest in Dean's honor
Cut to Dean in Heaven; he talks with Bobby and Castiel shows up with the explanation that he and Jack remodeled Heaven together
Dean and Cas acknowledge / work through what happened before Cas went to the Empty -- kiss scene???
Montage to "Carry On My Wayward Son" (not a cover) that shows Sam and Eileen and their kid (I'm thinking cute, curly haired, and deaf) and Dean visiting other people in Heaven
There's so much potential in this montage: Sam (and his kid, I guess) learning sign language from Eileen, Dean seeing Charlie again and their sibling-like dynamic, Sam's kid applying to Stanford, Jared not wearing a wig, Dean and Cas sharing drinks with Ellen, Jo, and Ash, the possibilities, people
The final scene is Dean and Cas driving around, and they see something up ahead (on the bridge, why not) and they turn down the music (montage music ends)
They step out of the car to find Sam there, they all reunite and hug, look out at the mountains, fade to black, Executive Producer title card
Thank you message from Jensen, Misha, and Jared, and same drone shot of the crew (but they're wearing masks).
Bonus points if Misha releases his essay on Cas's queerness.

I actually didn't mind the ending at all but I'm scared I'm gonna get yelled at for being kinda content with the ending
I won’t yell at you. Everyone has the right to their opinions. I just personally feel like it was such a cop-out to end it that way.
I write, I know how to tell stories (I’m not saying I’m the best at it or anything-- far from it, but I know how to do it) and this WAS NOT how you finish off an epic story like Supernatural.
But the writers seemed to have only one stipulation to the ending and that was: End it with the brothers and only the brothers.
Which, you know what-- fine, if that’s what they wanted to do, okay, but there was a much better way they could’ve done that. They could’ve had both Sam and Dean die after saving those kids. They could’ve found the boys hiding in that barn, and then just as they freed them, they could’ve got jumped and taken out by the vampires. They still could’ve fought them off and killed them-- classic Winchester style, but their wounds would’ve been too great, and they could have thought for a moment that they’d try to save each other, but then ... they both realize that that death was always meant for them. That kind of death was the best they could hope for living the life they had. So they say goodbye to each other, happy that the world is finally free, just as they are now; and then-- they wake up in heaven to Castiel and Jess, and Bobby and Jo and Ellen, and all the rest of the people who they lost through the years, and that’s when they find that this is a new kind of heaven. They discover that Jack brought about peace and unity, and it’s more than either of them expected. It’s more than they could have ever hoped for.
So, they spend the rest of the episode reuniting with the ones they love, they get those special calm and normal moments they always wanted-- eating dinner as a family, drinking beers with their friends, holding hands with the ones that also hold their hearts. They finally get the happy endings they always deserved; and after that and ONLY after that, do Sam and Dean drive to that bridge and look off into the distance, smiling to themselves, because they really did save people and hunt things and make a real difference in people’s lives-- they know, because they can see it. They can see Eileen and Charlie and Donna and Jody, and Claire and Kaia, and all the rest of their friends still on earth. They can see that they’re happy and alive and safe ... because of them; so they give each other one last hug before hopping back into Baby and driving into the distance, fading into light, and Carry On My Wayward Son is playing, and Baby’s engine is roaring, and we are left looking after them knowing that the boys’ work is finally done.
THAT is how you tie up 15 years of history and characters while still maintaining the sanctity of the show.

A Turn of Events
I’m not going to stand back and let my emotional support characters be treated like that.
Here’s something that I’m pretty sure cannot possibly be worse than what was aired.
wc: 556
Part 1 of Chapter 1
Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4 |  Part 5 | Part 6 | Part 7
He could feel the rebar inside him. The blood had started to seep through his jacket. He managed to keep his voice steady, “Sam. I don’t think I’m gonna be able to move.”
“Dean? What-” Sam moved closer and realized what had happened.
“All that and a rusty nail takes me out, huh?” He let out a dry laugh that sounded more like a wheeze.
“Wait, Dean, hold on.” Sam stepped back and started looking around for something, anything that would help.
“Sammy, stop. It's okay. It’s gonna be okay. You-”
“No. It's not! It's not, Dean! We’ve been through too much for me to be okay with this! And stow that ‘let me go’ crap. This isn’t over.” Sam turned around, ignoring Dean’s strained breathing and called out, “Jack? Jack! Jack, can you hear me? Please, we need you!”
They heard a light flutter of wings and Dean felt a hand on his shoulder. With a small flash of white light Dean was healed and brought down from the wall.
“Jack!” Dean gasped as he looked at the boy standing next to him.
“Hi Dean, Sam. I was going to meet you in the bunker but I guess we’ll do this now.” He took a deep breath and walked over to one of the nearest crates, confusing the Winchesters who were surprised he even showed.
“Amara and I got to spend some time together and we came to an agreement. She decided it would be better if instead of the ‘Light and Darkness’ both existing in me, it would be better with her.”
“Wait, you mean she is now her own… ‘being’ and you're...” Dean waved his hand vaguely at Jack.
“Just me. Well, not yet. She’s still here. We have some things to get done first. But when she does leave I’ll be just, me, Jack. Still a Nephilim, though. I can't really go on without my grace. She said I deserved a life. And a childhood.” he finished with a smile.
Sam returned the smile but they still had a few questions, “Wait, what do you mean stuff? Do you need anything from us?”
“Yes, actually we do. First we need to stop over at Hell.”
Dean took a moment to appreciate how casually that sentence could be thrown into their conversations before asking, “Can you maybe give us more details kid?”
“We’re going to see Rowena. She found an ancient book that might have something about putting the Empty back to sleep.”
Dean’s face fell at the mention of the Empty. “You’re putting the Empty to sleep… forever?”
“Yes. That’s what I need you for. We made a deal that said we would put it to rest as long as we get some angels in return, you know with Heaven slowly dying and everything. And a few demons- Rowena’s request. But it won't give up Cas. So one of you will have to go in and pull Cas out while the other helps Rowena with the spell.”
Sam felt his heart lighten for the first time in maybe years when a light that had been gone a long time returned to Dean’s eyes as he asked, “We’re bringing Cas back?”
“Of course. I am god for now. What else would I do with all this power?”
“Well, let’s go to Hell then!”
(ᵖˡˢ ʳᵉᵃᵈ ᵘⁿᵈᵉʳ ᵗʰᵉ ᶜᵘᵗ)
First of all, I didn’t get the ending I wanted, or even one I could tolerate, so I’m writing my own.
I see many people are doing whole rewrites and I can’t wait to read them. But I just want to see the boys have peace and not send the message that you have to die for it. You can have a good life no matter what you had to go through in the past. There is always hope.
So I’m going to fix this clusterfuck of a finale and write a season 16. It’s just going to be TFW 2.0 and their extended family (ᴮᴱᶜᴬᵁˢᴱ ᶠᴬᴹᴵᴸʸ ᴬᴵᴺ’ᵀ ᴱᴺᴰᴵᴺᴳ ᵂᴵᵀᴴ ᴮᴸᴼᴼᴰ. ᴺᴼᵀ ᴵᴺ ᴹʸ ᵂᴼᴿᴸᴰ!) doing regular things with maybe an occasional decapitation.
Only fluff. Pure domestic fluff. No pining. No hurt without comfort. No angst. My babies are going to be happy. I promise. And I’m not leaving till I wrap this up with a fucking bow.
This is just part one of the first chapter because I am incapable of writing more than 500 words in one post. I’ll be posting at least twice a week and the whole fic will be on AO3 once finished.
If you want to be tagged in my season 16 fics please let me know.

the ending of 15x20 didn't actually happen, one of two other things happened:
#1: Dean went into cardiac arrest at the Pie Fest, so the vampmime case and his death and Sam's depressing life montage and that hellish heaven was just Dean's subconscious playing out scenarios before he was resuscitated; nothing supernatural was involved.
OR
#2: everything from the Pie Fest onwards was a Djinn-induced hallucination perpetrated by Cas' Djinn Queen wife who blames Dean for her husband's death and she sought revenge by torturing Dean: taking away his happy ending, his found family, even the peace that heaven should hold.
bonus for #2: Dean is rescued by his Found Family who then help him finish what he started (what he was really researching in the bunker at the beginning of 15x20 and what he was in the middle of trying to do when he was captured and poisoned): saving Cas.

Standing on this bridge, in Heaven, Dean feels the entirety of eternity stretched before him.  He doesn’t feel fear, or anger, or sadness -- no, not even over Sam not being there yet.  He feels hope.  He feels love.  He feels certainty.
Sam will be there.  He will.  There is no Heaven for him without Sam, and since this is Heaven, well.  Sam will be there.
Dean smiles, and he feels it more acutely than he ever has before.  Everything feels different here.  It’s easy, but it’s intense.  In the best way.
“Hello, Dean.”
Dean felt the comforting presence before he even spoke.  He turns, and there he is -- Castiel, Angel of Thursday, in his trenchcoat.
“Bang up job, Cas.”
Cas shrugs.  “We’re just...making it up as we go.”
Dean feels a tug at his heartstrings.  A memory from long ago.  He shakes it off. “We’re in Heaven, and you still wear that damn trenchcoat?”
Cas tries to fight a smirk but fails.  “This is your Heaven, Dean.  And didn’t you once tell me to never change?”
Dean steps towards him.  “But you did.  You told me.  You changed because of me.”
Cas nods.  “I did.”
Dean steps closer.  “And then what did you say?”
Cas sighs, a wistful look in his eyes.  “I love you.”
Dean nods.  “Damn right.”
Cas manages a laugh.
Dean steps right up next to Cas and looks into his eyes.  He slips his hand into Cas’s and interlaces their fingers.
“I guess good things really do happen.”
Cas beams at him, and Dean turns so they’re standing side by side, hand in hand.
Sam stands at the far end of the bridge and slowly breaks into a smile at the sight of them.
Everything is right with the world.
