Soulbonding is not just Spiritual/Metaphysical.

Disclaimer: I want to preface this by saying that I am not trying to deny anyone's experiences or invalidate different interpretations. I fully accept, support, and believe individuals about their soulbonding, whatever it may be. The following is more about the revisionism I've seen around what soulbonding is, what it originally meant, and how it's been used in the community since then.

For some years now, this post has been simmering inside of me, and I think it's finally time to let it loose. I've noticed that every time I go looking for resources and community around soulbonding on Tumblr, Discord, etc., there has been a heavy emphasis on soulbonding being a spiritual/metaphysical experience, which is not entirely the full picture. The fact is, there are multiple ways to approach soulbonding, and one such perspective is that of thoughtforms. Thoughtforms are psychological constructs that become real, autonomous, living entities through the power of creative imagination, conscious or subconscious intent, and the thoughts, feelings, and knowledge of the host. This type of soulbonding is the kind Mel and I practice, yet it is often overlooked and overshadowed within the modern remnants of the soulbonding community.

The exclusive focus on soulbonding as a spiritual phenomenon is not only revisionist of its original history, but it also may be excluding people who are already soulbonders (in a thoughtform way) and just don't know it or who would jump at the chance to love, connect with, and understand a character until they are alive. If we bring back the broadened definition of soulbonding that includes all experiences and perspectives, we have the potential to help the soulbonding community survive and thrive with a new crowd of selfshippers, creatives, immersive daydreamers, neurodivergents, and more!

The concept of soulbonding, though coined by Amanda Flowers in the Just for Writers mailing list, is a phenomenon which has long existed for writers and lovers of fiction: that fictional characters—when created, written about, and understood until the level of affinity—will often take on a mind of their own, "coming to life" inside the individual's head, and start interacting with them in a more direct capacity.

One study from the early 2000s referred to it as "The Illusion of Independent Agency" According to the study, 92% of the 219 participants reported that their fictional characters displayed varying levels of independence or autonomy in the author's mind, often without the conscious effort of the author. Another study conducted in 2014 surveyed 1,500 readers of fiction, with 19% of them mentioning experiencing the voices and personalities of characters staying in their minds long after finishing their stories. A quick search on the topic of "characters coming to life" shows writers and roleplayers, both of fanfiction and original fiction, sharing their experiences of characters seemingly telling their own stories or becoming "real" in their minds. Renowned authors such as Phillip Pullman, Cornelia Funke, the TERF who shall not be named, and so many more have also discussed their characters speaking to them or taking on a mind of their own as they write about them.

Now, I'm uncertain where interpreting soulbonding as a primarily spiritual phenomenon came from. I did find a few people initially involved in the JFW mailing list who were aware of and supported both spiritual and psychological theories. (It is worth noting, however, there were some regrets over calling it "soulbonding", for it implied a purely spiritual connotation when it was never meant to be strictly that.) Based on my research, I believe the main source of this misunderstanding of being a primarily metaphysical phenomenon is the description given by fictionkin.org, fromfiction, and the soulbonder Tumblr blog (all run by the same individual presenting themself as a pillar in the community) who seemed adamant on redefining soulbonding to mean being a channeller or medium of external entities.

Regardless of when spiritual soulbonding first got introduced, we psychological soulbonders have always been a part of this community from the beginning (arguably, we were the beginning), and we deserve to have our perspectives and ties to this community, this framework, this terminology, respected as much as any other kind of soulbonder. Please, if you discuss soulbonding, keep in mind the origins of this concept and strive to be inclusive of all interpretations and explanations. Clarify where you can that what you are writing is just your personal experience/interpretation, one of the many within this unique phenomenon.

To any spiritual soulbonders out there, I want to assure you that your experiences are real and valid, just as viewing them as thoughtforms is real and valid. If that idea—of "soulbond" meaning both spiritual/metaphysical and thoughtform—distresses you, it may be worth considering whether a different label with a more narrow definition that aligns with your interpretation might be a better fit. Whether a soulbond is a fictional character "come to life" or "an external entity traveling across the universe like spirits", what truly defines their realness and validity is the impact they have on our lives, how much they care for us, and how deeply we feel for them, not their point of origin.

This is probably an odd sort of request but I've been wondering about something and if you are willing to do a tarot reading to help clear it up a bit it would be much appreciated!! See, I selfship with Dabi from BNHA but I also really, really like the ship between him and Hawks, and I often enjoy the DabiHawks ship in a way that really strongly associates with relating to Hawks's position in a way. Like I ship DabiHawks with a feeling of me as Hawks. Is this possibly a kin thing? Or am I just relating to Hawks as Dabi's soul mate on a more superficial level of being someone who selfships with Dabi myself and happens to like Hawks a lot? I've imagined wrapping Dabi in "my" wings and felt almost a sensory aspect of that, and my own self insert doesn't have wings so that seems like it should be a Hawks kin thing... I want to get an idea of whether I should follow up on this more or if I'm barking up the wrong tree, so to speak. First off, as someone who is fictionkin myself, I just wanted to say that your description of your own experiences does seem very fictionkin related to me. You don't need "kin memories" to be fictionkin. The most important part is your own identity. The fact that you are experiencing something reminiscent of kinshifts (i.e. the wings, which in the otherkin community could be considered "astral wings" or "phantom wings" depending on your preferred terminology) is just even more evidence in favor of it as well. But the label you choose to use and feel comfortable with is entirely your own, and i'm happy to support you via tarot.

I also just wanted to note that my intuition strongly guided me towards answering. Shoutout to the time (very recently) I joined a selfship server that did not advertise themselves as being fictionkin friendly in any way, no problem I thought. I join, mention that I'm fictionkin and wait to be allowed in. Apparently in my adhd "get things done as fast as possible" stupor I failed to notice that homestuck was a blacklisted media, and my display name was a reference. Again, no problem, I've been meaning to change it for a while and its only for f/os (of which no homestuck ones exist for me), so when the owner asked me I was honest in saying I didn't like it (at least not anymore) and I was just a person with a kin from it.

Now this guy was. Uneducated, to the extent they and everyone else in their server were going off the TIKTOK DEFINITION and as I would also soon find out were not very fond of Tumblr users (aka, the only people you should trust if ur uneducated) and asked me a bunch of questions, the obvious "do you like homestuck" and also what fictionkin meant. They then asked me ABOUT EQUIUS, to see if they'd "be comfortable with your (my) kin", like I would be mentioning a 13yr old I don't selfship with in a 16+ selfship server (people don't like that type where I come from, but that's besides the point)

I did not think this at the moment and just answered hoping to get it over with, they do not allow creepy or bigoted f/os which was the point of contention for be being this literal child I do not ship myself with. He is the equivalent of a douche going into a pride game on roblox, seeing a rainbow, going ew, and then immediately leaving

Eventually I was just like "this is what fictionkin is, feel free to not allow me access but this is what it is to me and just because I'm a character doesn't mean I like the media" and they let me in, the owner also added fictionkins to the exception list (which I thought was for f/o medias?? Dunno why that was looking back, I don't even get it for fictives like did you assume they liked their problematic sources, why do they get a pass for liking it I'm confused) and the server FLIPPED THEIR SHIT. Going off the kff meaning and not listening to reason, going "do what you want but EYE think it's a bad idea and I don't like it!" And then bringing up selfshipping being spiritual in some cases too and that's when I just left. Like no argument makes it better.

Spiritual selfshippers don't get a pass? I'm not selfshipping with this character because it's gross, don't like the media and have no reason to bring the kin up. Some selfshippers.... are spiritual or have spiritual ties? WHY DON'T YOU THINK FICTIONKINS ARE VALID THEN also WHY DO YOU THINK MY MAIN F/O IS MY MAIN F/O, GET REAL.

I also saw in a vent channel that they were being overly critical of who people selfshipped with (and again, kin), namely AM from that one thing I won't mention so it doesn't show up in searches for it. Buddy this is a horror selfship server, why are you hating on people for thinking a villain is hot, your bf is probably just like it but without the extinction of the human race in their list of crimes.

Then in another selfship server that is fictionkin friendly (run by one who's super cool too) and has both me and the owner in it, I saw the previous server's owner KINPOSTING AB9UT POKEMON WHEN I SCROLLED UP TO EARLY MESSAGES IN A CHAT, HOW ARE YOU AS A FICTIONKIN BY DEFINITION "UNEDUCATED"

Selfship discord, to phrase it like another selfshipping fictionkin did (thank you crow, you're never going to see this), is like 2020 kincord. And that says enough.

Heya! I just found your punch-out au fic on a recommended page and I love it to bits! It's such and interesting concept and already a great story! Even if it never continues, it's definitely gonna be something I re-read.

Also your art is cool as hell! I love the way you mix the different designs Sandman's had over the years into a cohesive design that looks really unique while staying true to the spirit of his character!

Aww thank you! honestly, getting into the writing process without any knowledge of structure or pacing killed me. I've been practicing quite a bit in my free time. I'm not sure if i can guarantee a continuation since i realized that i came up with the plot after suffering a few losses and identity issues and thematically, it least plotting it out (and later, selfshipping) gave me the catharsis i needed.

sometimes you get to a point with a character that it feels disingenuous to put them in certain situations like a children's plaything. Darius (mr. Sandman) in particular has grown and evolved into something bigger than punch out to me, which i don't expect to make sense to anyone but a few assorted creatives, spirituals, selfshippers and neurodivergent people. i just let him take me where he wants to go. i can't puppet him.

maybe that sounds crazy, but i don't mind. i've genuinely become a healthier person through this coping mechanism. i was diagnosed with autism a month ago, and while sometimes i still doubt, there's no doubt that my special interest has helped me process and start to heal from things i otherwise wouldn't have. i have some creative and supportive friends to thank for that too.

but i digress--thank you for the compliments! it means a lot to me that people still care about something that's brought me so much joy over the years. people may find some of my interpretations to be a bit eccentric, but i don't mind. I've had lots of people agree with me that fat is a good look on sandman.

my hope is that by being myself unapologetically, i can give at least one person out there the space to do so too. it didn't phase me one bit to get on cringetopia--i laughed my ass off. better that they go after me than someone more vulnerable.

i used to be really scared and think that all of my deepest desires, ideas and sensibilities were stupid and shameful. if i hadn't been open here, there's a chance I'd have been much more hurt by their remarks. now, it feels like it rolls right off my back when someone is mean. i might even laugh along; if you take yourself too seriously, you'll never be happy!

i wear the label "cringe" with pride--it means i am unbothered, authentic, and irreverent. i think if we were all willing to be a bit more cringe, people would feel a helluva lot more connected than they do now.
