Spinal cord tumors overview & Facts about spinal cord tumors by our Senior Neuro-Oncologist Dr. K. Venkateswara Rao.
A spinal tumor is a growth that develops within your spinal canal or within the bones of your spine. A spinal tumor may be cancerous (malignant) or noncancerous (benign). Even if benign, can lead to pain, neurological problems and sometimes paralysis. A spinal tumor can be life-threatening and cause permanent disability.. Spinal tumors cause problems with the nerves, blood vessels, and bones. A spinal cord tumor may be called “primary,” which means cancer started in the spinal cord, or “secondary,” which means cancer started somewhere else in the body and spread to the spinal cord. Most of the time, spinal cord tumors are secondary tumors. Spinal cord tumors can cause many different symptoms: Back pain is a common early symptom of spinal tumors. Pain may also spread beyond your back to your hips, legs, feet or arms and may worsen over time. Back pain, often radiating to other parts of your body Feeling less sensitive to pain, heat and cold Loss of bowel or bladder function Difficulty walking, sometimes leading to falls Back pain that's worse at night Loss of sensation or muscle weakness, especially in your arms or legs Muscle weakness, which may be mild or severe, in different parts of your body Your chances of gaining a positive outcome are best if you tell your doctor about your symptoms, get a diagnosis, and begin treatment as soon as possible.

How to Know if it can be Osteosarcoma
Tumblr media
It is not necessary that a person who has osteosarcoma may look or feel sick initially. Also they tend to neglect bone and joint pains mistaking it for normal pain. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms persistently it is advisable that you get yourself checked in order to be sure of the root of the problem.

Proton therapy
Tumblr media
Overview Proton therapy is a type of radiation therapy — a treatment that uses high-energy beams to treat tumors. Radiation therapy using X-rays has long been used to treat cancers and noncancerous (benign) tumors. Proton therapy is a newer type of radiation therapy that uses energy from positively charged particles called protons. Proton therapy has shown promise in treating several kinds of cancer. Studies have suggested that proton therapy may cause fewer side effects than traditional radiation, since doctors can better control where the proton beams deposit their energy. But few studies have directly compared proton therapy radiation and X-ray radiation, so it's not clear whether proton therapy is more effective in prolonging lives. Proton therapy isn't widely available in the United States. Why it's done Proton therapy is used as a treatment for cancer and some noncancerous tumors. Proton therapy may be used as the only treatment for your condition. Or it may be used in conjunction with other treatments, such as surgery and chemotherapy. Proton therapy is sometimes used to treat: Brain tumorsBreast cancerCancer in childrenEye melanomaEsophageal cancerHead and neck cancersLiver cancerLung cancerPituitary gland tumorsProstate cancerSarcomaTumors affecting the spineTumors in the base of the skull Clinical trials are investigation proton therapy as a treatment for a number of other types of cancer. I haven't wrote because I couldn't calmly type out my feelings of what has come to be my life. My MRI had shown the unthinkable...the cancer didn't get better, in fact it has worsened. I was taken of of chemo and the past 2 months my oncologist and I have been discussing my options. The decision has been made to transfer me to another hospital about 4 hours away. This hospital has a chemo that is new to the drug market. It has not been studied thoroughly but it has been positively responded to in some cases which is enough for my oncologist to say it's my best option right now. The side effects fill my family with fear but I have to keep my head up and face it with The knowledge of God healing me. It's a scary journey but I will never give up!
