Fighting cancer with chemical engineering

Dr. Ankit Mehta from the University of Illinois at Chicago was featured as a “20 under 40” researcher in SpineLine. He has a chemical engineering background and earned his MD with the Harvard-MIT Health Sciences and Technology program. With a specialization on spine care, Mehta was concerned about the dire outcomes of patients with spinal cord associated tumors. Given Mehta’s background, how could he incorporate chemical engineering to fight cancer? The answer required thinking outside of the box.  

“Chemical engineering mirrors neurosurgery in many ways. You use basic principles of physics and chemistry to solve real world problems,” said Mehta.

In a rat intramedullary spinal cord tumor model, his lab used magnetically targeted nanoparticles to bypass the blood brain barrier. This barrier is a known hindrance to oral and intravenous chemotherapies. Using this technology, Mehta was able to successfully deliver the chemotherapy directly to the tumor and trigger cell death. This proof of concept study was published recently in Nature Scientific Reports. With the success of that study, his lab is currently researching the efficacy and toxicity in this rat model. As this chemical engineering improves, Mehta hopes that more patients will have access to personalized medicine to reduce complications and improve their outcomes.

I was surprised to see this striped cloth on the spine of a bible that came in today. The spines are usually lined with waste paper, so this cloth was an unusual find. Verken dit weekend gratis de Alpen en Alaska in Steep

Het eerste gratis weekend van Steep is vanaf 10 maart beschikbaar op PlayStation 4, Xbox One en Windows PC. Spelers die dromen van waanzinnige ski- en snowboardtricks op de pieken van Mount Denali, paragliden tussen de toppen van de Mont Blanc of wingsuiten door de gletsjers van Alaska, kunnen dit weekend gratis ervaren hoe het is om dat samen met vrienden te doen in Steep.

Spelers hebben toegang tot het gratis weekend tussen de volgende tijdstippen:

·         PlayStation 4: 10 maart om 19.00 uur tot 13 maart 19.00 uur

·         Xbox One: 10 maart om 09.00 uur tot 13 maart 09.00 uur

·         Uplay PC: 10 maart om 19.00 uur tot 13 maart 19.00 uur

Spelers die de game dit weekend kopen, genieten van een fikse korting, zonder hun voortgang te verliezen. Vanaf 10 tot 21 maart is de Steep Standard Edition op Xbox Live verkrijgbaar met 50% korting en de Gold Edition met 40% korting. Op PlayStation Network is de Steep Standard Edition tot en met 15 maart verkrijgbaar met 50% korting en de Gold Edition met 44% korting. De Ubisoft Store geeft tot en met 15 maart een korting van 40% op Steep, dit op zowel de Standard als de Gold Edition.

Steeps meest recente update voegde de wilde, extreme pieken van Alaska’s Mount Denali toe, inclusief 21 nieuwe uitdagingen, 2 branded challenges en een Mountain Story. In Alaska kunnen spelers nieuwe terreinen veroveren, waaronder spinelines, gigantische gletsjers, nieuwe urban features en kilometers ongerepte natuur. Ubisoft has released the Alaska add-on content for Steep. The new add-on is available for free on PC, PS4 and Xbox One. With this new update, players can now ski, snowboard, wingsuit and paraglide through a new open world region, Alaska.

The Alaska content opens up 21 new challenges, 2 branded challenges and one Mountain Story for Steep players to conquer in new terrain, including spinelines, extreme crests, massive glaciers, new urban features and miles of untouched wild nature. Two additional Invitationals challenge players to raise their reputation by pushing their limits on the slopes and outdoing themselves on the leaderboards. Steep fans can continue to customize their lines and replays by donning new Alaska items and costumes.

The latest updates let players focus on the fun with major enhancements made to features, including the tricks system and g-force impacts. Additionally, new camera angles and the ability to capture replay videos without the HUD gives players even more freedom with the editor mode.
