reading chapter 8 of tonight will be the night, and I can't help but think that the reason Catra got the idea to "use she-ra" was because went on a diplomatic mission to a place where She-ra is still worshiped as a god and sat through a religious ceremony where it was mentioned that she-ra was a goddess of love or smth like that.

Cyra and Glimmer are quietly whisper ranting to each other during the ceremony about how outrageous this whole thing is. Meanwhile Catra is trying her absolute best to pretend the reason she is clearly very flustered is because she thinks the preacher (who is clearly not her type) is hot. In reality of course Catra is thinking... thoughts.

Late,r after Spinarella and Netossa have figured Catra out, another diplomatic mission occurs with all 3 of them and at least one other. This time Catra is reminiscing, Spin and Net are judging, and whoever else came along is confused by the weird energy.

Now that I've spent a good day thinking about how hot it is when Catra is a terrible person corrupted by setting off a portal, I'm ready to go back to (re)watching her try to be Good lolol

I mean I literally spent the last four? five? days listening to songs off The Downward Spiral over and over while thinking about Catra and practicing my makeup for my Catra cosplay and ordering more of the things I need for it; like literally just staring off into space at work between phone calls thinking about Catra

SO HEY if you're new here, I've been rewatching all of the 2018 She-Ra, and I started doing it for fic-writing reasons but predictably I have become deeply obsessed. Anyway these posts sometimes have a lot of asides and commentary and references to other stuff and dumb jokes among a ton of screenshots, also (and it feels odd saying it this close to the end of the show) it's a RE-watch, so there's often spoilers for later bits of the story, also I keep trying NOT to just describe the entire plots of the episodes but I keep failing lol

But yeah they're going to the speakeasy thing to get Prince Peekablue who can see to the edges of the galaxy and can maybe tell them where Adora and the others are because they don't know what happened

Oh also Spinarella is chipped and Netossa is realizing something is off/weird about her but doesn't know what

Sea Hawk has pissed off approximately half the people in the room it seems (by lighting their ships on fire at some point)

Scorpia and Perfuma are the cutest and I can absolutely see how they end up together

In my fic I originally had Adora talking to some kind of therapist but I wasn't sure they existed on Etheria, and last week I edited that bit so Adora is talking to these two (which makes the conversation more fun AND easier to write anyway)

Perfuma: "Scorpia. You should do things not because you're good at them, but because they make you happy." THAT IS ONE OF MY LIFE PHILOSOPHIES thank you Perfuma you're 100% correct and I tell people this ALL THE TIME

Mermista: "I might've set their boat on fire. Just to see what it felt like."

Perfuma makes a flower, throws it to Scorpia as she sings, and she blushes and tucks it into her hair, these two are so sweet and cute

oh god I forgot that when "Prince Peekablue" get stung by Scorpia they go through the last half-dozen shapeshifts before turning into a (passed-out) Double Trouble.

lolol instead of "cash cow" it's an insult to poor Catra

Anyway they have the info the Rebellion wanted!

Horde Prime is pissed and has blockaded the planet, also half the people at the speakeasy were chipped....and now so is Mermista, though nobody realizes that yet

But also the phrasing of "She-ra stole his little kitten away" is just amazing

But also the last they heard, Adora and Bow and Entrapta had left to rescue Glimmer, do they think Double Trouble is talking about Glimmer here or what

(which. they did. they just also went back for Catra.)

Netossa realizes her wife (and most of the people around them) are chipped D:

BTW I remember a lot of people wanting to know if Netossa and Spinarella were married pre-canon or at some point during the series and I went and checked the early episodes and found an answer!

In their debut episode (Flowers for She-Ra) they are already wearing their swapped necklaces which are Etherias marriage marker (wearing something of your spouses) so they were most likely married pre-canon!!!!!

Pre-canon Spintossa headcanon

Canonly, Netossa has no kingdom of her own. From this I kinda went off while thinking about how they met and became a couple:

Netossa loses her small kingdom to the Horde when she’s younger after the first Princess Alliance broke apart. I see them around Glimmer s1 age

She goes to Spinarella’s more advanced kingdom, which is now isolationist, asking at her throne room asylum for her people

Spinarella says that she can’t do that because their resources are limited with the war and that Netossa should go back and retake her own kingdom

Netossa says that they can provide protection for Spinarella’s kingdom, Spinarella says that they couldn’t even protect their own

Netossa gets mad and challenges Spinarella to a duel to prove she’s strong and Spinarella is surprised but excited to see someone not treat her as fragile

They duke it out in public for hours and they’re evenly matched

With that out of their system they start to reflect and cool down

Spinarella seeks Netossa out to apologize but Netossa says Spinarella only says that because she sees her now as an asset, but she gets the pressures of running a kingdom and that she’ll leave once her people are ready as they don’t feel welcome

Spinarella gets increasing pressure to kick the refugees out but after spending more time with Netossa and listening to her she’s rethinking the kingdom’s policies

She secretly visits and provides aid for Netossa’s camp and Netossa finds out

The Horde attacks to sack the kingdom, but with Netossa and her people’s help they defeat them

They save each other during the battle and turns out they make a great team when they combine powers. They start the “who defeats more Horde soldiers” game

Spinarella offers Netossa to stay but that if she wants to leave she gets it and they’ll give them resources and weapons

Netossa stays and they become friends

It’s not until Adora is staring down at her coldly and offering her the choice to go, to leave them all behind, to never see her again, that Catra finally realizes that she can’t do it. She’s spent years alone, empty, angry. Her rage was the only fire that warmed her, but now she’s just cold. Her bones are aching with it. And she can’t do it for a moment longer. She reaches for Adora.

Also they had this argument in front of Entrapta, I just realized that

Back on Etheria the chipped villagers are trying to attack them and all I can think is, can you even chip Swift Wind? Like would that even work???

at this point I probably don't need to screenshot every time they have an emotion at each other or touch each other but I'm already in the habit of it okay

hah, and that's enough to make Adora able to turn into She-Ra right there in the room

with a flashy new transformation sequence that shows off how she's added bits of Glimmer and Bow's outfits but also:

Catra's old headband. Which she gives a knowing smile at as the light dissipates

This is quite a contrast from Catra's reaction in s1 where she looks away with anger after handing Adora the sword:

Now she's just allowing herself to think it's hot as hell

(Man, I'm so torn. On the one hand I love all the moments of Catra and Adora being affectionate and shit and Catra's new look is cute, but also, mean!Catra was unreasonably hot.)

ANYWAY

Swift Wind is able to channel some of She-Ra's powers for a split second and get everyone away, that's cool

and of course they're doing this while the ship is getting banged about because they don't have any other option

meanwhile She-Ra kicks ass in space

Meanwhile Entrapta is like, Oh, that? pfft

man the lack of headband/shorter hair really makes Catra's ears look HUGE, but also, she's being way more expressive with them than she was in s4

(though oh god I know I keep mentioning Nate's fic but after this, Catra teases Adora, and Adora accidentally upsets Catra while joking about eating real food and not ration bars--"I've been waiting years for you to join the rebellion!"--and Catra walks off and hides in a hallway and sobs so hard she nearly pukes and after she's stopped crying Entrapta finds her there and they have a whole amazing conversation and then Catra is so worn out she passes out asleep in the hall and then Adora finds her there and bridal-carries her back to bed, where they end up cuddling, and you'e probably already read it but if you haven't you should I linked it in the first half of the post. ALSO if you sort all of She-Ra (2018) fics by kudos, that fic has THREE TIMES as many kudos as the next fic on the list, lolol.)

but yeah just before the end of the episode, back on Etheria we see the chip in Spinarella's neck D:

GIRLY like yes obviously it's wild that you can do it without the sword, but ALSO you can admit to them that it was because you were that upset about Catra.

Adora keeps coming back to check on her, and Catra feigns sleep every time. She doesn’t touch the water bottle even though her dry throat aches, because then Adora would know that she had been awake. But eventually, she slips into shallow dreams again — the green fluid, Prime’s smirk, the pain, his voice — and that’s when Adora happens to check in on her again. At the sound of the door Catra sits bolt upright, her heart pounding out of her chest and a terrified scream bursting from her mouth before she can choke it down. And just like that, her cover’s blown. And Adora’s looking at her with that same stupid, hopeful look, like Catra hasn’t spent years trying to burn her and everything she loved. And she can’t stand it.

So Catra does what she always does. She retreats behind her walls, lashes out, needles Adora where she knows it stings the most. It’s what she is. She’s an animal, nothing more than base instincts and rotten heart, just as everyone has always said she was. She’s poison, she’s fire, she’s broken glass, and all she knows how to do is hurt and be hurt in turn.

Adora leaves, angry, and something in Catra, some small childish piece that somehow hasn’t been completely stamped out, wants to call after her, wants to run after her into the bright hallway. She doesn’t. She stays in the dark. She doesn’t know how to leave it.

Anyway back on Etheria, they're playing games to keep Frosta entertained and also AN ON SCREEN LESBIAN KISS

Apparently it was the combination of the previous episode and this one that made the first people to watch this season realize "oh we're going to get an actual catradora kiss. on screen. aren't we."

(I remember the day before Netflix dropped the episodes, with everyone I knew on social media basically doing a "will they or won't they." I'm Fandom Old and just kept reminding myself that if they didn't get a kiss or a love confession it was either for good story reasons (Catra was still doing bad shit at the end of s4!) or because the showrunners were forbidden from doing it. But man I was online intentionally spoiling myself as soon as I could. I HAD TO KNOW, but Daci and I watched it like a day later)

Okay so this is part of why I struggle to get how multiple years passed as the show goes on--why is Frosta still like. Eleven.

Glimmer is holding up a box that looks like the ancient sugar Madame Razz used to make pie. Which was also on this ship now that I think about it? That's. Thousand-year-old sugar.

But also

Adora: "After everything we've been through she's still a stubborn brat!!" Glimmer: "This is Catra we're talking about. Did you think she was just instantly going to become a totally different person?"

yeah Adora thought Catra would be grateful and like....lol no
