Spider-Man posting again but something I did notice in the first game and Miles Morales is the difference between Peter and Miles when it comes to community. Miles’ solo game greatly emphasized how important community and family was to him - and - how that community welcomed him in return, so much to even protect the secret that he’s Spider-Man. Peter is community oriented, but distinctly isolated from any community to call his own. Most of his closest friends end up estranged or missing - alongside a turbulent romantic relationship and financial debt - Peter’s Spider-Man doesn’t feel like someone you can know. Peter’s Spider-Man fights for the people of the city, and Miles - while still achieving that goal, fights for the people who know and love him, fights for a home he can come back to and accepts him.

All of this saying, Peter playing host for venom for however long it will go on in the game - it seems the perfect time for the distance between a human kid from New York and Spider-Man to increase indefinitely. Peter’s potential to become completely detached from his goals, ambition, and selflessness in order to secure whatever fleeting comfortability and happiness he can get suddenly seems so possible.

I love how they're working with the symbiote. It's not mind controlling Peter, it's manipulating him; making him feel things are worse, pitting him against his friends. And I also love how they didn't downplay the whole thing. That scene where Symbiote Peter was chasing MJ? Horrifying. Pure gold

Also! Peter vs Miles! I've always wanted to see that. And it was so angsty too! It was great. I love this game

A big running bit among superhero stories (at least their audiences) that I love to see Spider-Man 2 fighting against is the idea that maybe things would be better off if the hero just killed their villains. The argument is that they're not gonna change, and given the opportunity they'd just come back and do it again. And while Spider-Man really played into this, giving us a veteran Peter Parker interacting mostly with villains he's fought before - aside from Dock-Ock and Mr. Negative - Spider-Man 2 shows villains TRYING to be better. Black Cat is genuinely acting in the interests of someone other than herself. Tombstone, who was running a massive criminal organization two in-game years ago, is working as a simple mechanic. Even Mysterio is trying to use his illusion tech and showmanship to entertain rather than steal. Sandman had been living a quiet life until provoked out of it. And while some of it is major Plot, most of it's just background detail, thrown in mostly to show what Kraven is stealing from these people by bringing his hunt to New York.
