have you had any mealybug problems with you graptoveria amethorum? its almost impossible for me to reach the spider mites with rubbing alchohol because the leaves are so close together

I haven’t yet! I do have a bit of an outbreak in my greenhouse but they haven’t reached my G. Amethorum yet (as far as I know at least, I haven’t been able to see them for awhile). If I do have a problem I usually use a spray bottle with the diluted rubbing alcohol and spray them down very liberally (and I do this OFTEN, like at least once a week [or more] for a few months), sometimes I take the plant and dunk it leaves first in a bucket of diluted alcohol and a few drops of Dr. Bronners castile soap. I try not to submerge the roots but a good dunk really gets into the cracks and crevices nicely. If I’m having a really bad time with them I also change their soil, as mealybugs tend to also hide in there sometimes, too. I’ll also clean the surrounding area with some alcohol for good measure. 

In the future I’m debating getting some beneficial mealybug destroyer bugs and releasing them into the greenhouse, while this isn’t a long term solution as the bugs will probably leave once the mealybug population is gone it’ll still help in the short term.

Asian Beetles VS Ladybugs

When you try and differentiate Asian beetles vs ladybugs, you’ll come across a startling fact: Asian beetle pictures look a lot like the pictures of ladybugs. This is because they’re from the same family known as Coccinellidae.

This is a family that is seen across the world in:

· North America

· South Africa

· Ireland

· United Kingdom

· Australia

· Pakistan

Also called ladybirds or lady beetles, depending on the region, the main difference between these two insects is the size of the two bugs. Asian ladybugs are larger in size. Ladybugs have a head that is all black with little white cheeks. Their Asian counterparts have more white on their “cheeks” and are more of a deep orange color rather than a red.

In terms of length, Asian lady beetles can get as large as 7mm in length. Their non-Asian counterparts are slightly smaller in length. But for most non-experts, these two insects will look rather similar.

Characteristics of Different Colors of Ladybugs

· Red Ladybugs: The red ladybird is among the most common. These ladybugs can be a very deep red or a faint red. Sizes can range from 0.8mm – 18mm at its largest size.

· Pink Ladybugs: Just like some ladybugs have faint spots, there are also red ladybugs that have a faint color that can be considered pink. These ladybugs are similar in size and may have as little as 12 spots on their backs.

If you hear someone say “Japanese ladybugs,” this is the same thing as Asian beetles vs ladybugs in terms that they’re just different names for the same type of bug.

Black Ladybugs

You may have heard of black ladybugs, and these are actually the twice-stabbed ladybird beetle. The name of this beetle is derived from the two red spots on the back of the beetle. The entire body is black in color minus the two red “stabs.”

You may also come across a very small ladybug – or what you think is a ladybug – that is all black. These little bugs measure just 1 ½ mm in size, and they’re actually spider mite destroyers. These little bugs, although small in size, eat up to 100 spider mites per day.

Ladybugs Vs Japanese Beetles

· Color: Green thorax and head with a copper body.

These bugs were transferred to North America in 1916. It’s suggested that a shipment of bulbs to a nursery in the state in 1912 contained one of the beetles, which eventually multiplied.

Female vs Male Ladybugs

Although the name “ladybugs” may seem like all of these bugs are female, this is not the case. These bugs can be male or female, and they look a lotalike. The one neat difference is that when these bugs are side-by-side, the males are generally smaller than the females.

When viewed under a microscope, you’ll be able to view small differences between males and females.

Males will have:

· Hair (or a hair-like structure) on their underside on the last segment of the abdomen.

· Bands that are prominent between the body segments when compared to females.

· A small notch on the segment.

Females, on the other hand, will have:

· Rounded posterior segment.

· Much less visible bands between segments.

· Few hair-like structures.

· Smooth abdomens.

What’s very interesting is that the male will latch onto the wings of the female during mating and stay there for nearly two hours. The large size of the female allows for this longer mating period.

While the ladybug and Asian lady beetle are slightly different due mainly to a small size difference, these bugs are considered the same by exterminators. They’re also from the same Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order and families (Coccinellidae and Coccinellidae Latreille).

The head of the Asian Lady Beetle also has a black marking of “M” or “W” in appearance.

Many places in North America have Asian Beetles which will roam in “packs” or “swarms.”

Ladybugs, in the traditional sense, are redder in color than their Asian counterparts. But unless you have a trained eye, these “relatives” are so similar, it may be impossible to tell them apart. Read more at https://pestsworld.net/
