tbh i think it would have made more sense, if they wanted to racebend without breaking/severely fucking with the backstories of the characters (and maybe even adding a new, interesting layer), they should have racebend a host of characters to be DORNISH. the show runners talk a big game about doing what got didn’t but one of got’s first Adaptation Sins was completely cutting Dorne out of the plot. Messing with Ellaria and the Sand Snakes, killing Doran, cutting Arianne and Aegon, giving us some nameless distant Martell cousin as the sole Dornish voice at the end…cutting Arianne and Aegon alone completely screwed the last few seasons but you can chart the downfall of the series by how Dorne is written (we literally all remember bad pussy)! Of course, it seems like “doing what got didn’t” doesn’t include Dorne at all which is a huge indictment of how thoroughly they misunderstand the books and how haphazardly they decided to racebend.
Here are the characters it makes sense to racebend (heavy emphasis on being Dornish, obviously):
Marilda of Hull (“daughter of a shipwright” could be from anywhere) and therefore Addam and Alyn as well.
Actually gone into Criston Cole’s Dornish background and ancestry; this man is essentially fighting to preserve ANDAL law and not Dornish/Rhoynar law and he’s clearly internalized all the madonna/whore complex nonsense that the Faith has about women, he clearly feels some type of way about queer people, but there’s no discussion of how being from Dorne is so at odds with his worldview?? Racebending because the actor is a man of color is a great idea but the way they did it just completely divorces him from his Dornish background so completely he may well have been from the Free Cities instead.
Joffrey Lonmouth should be Dornish specifically as a way of forcing a conversation about Criston's worldview and how it compares to the typical Dornish worldview.
Qarl should also be a MoC, he’s low birth and from the Crownlands, it would be so easy to make his parents merchant class from Essos that married a landed knight or impoverished house (like Serenei of Lys and Sybell Spicer).
Qoren Martell was involved in the Stepstones War, it would b eso easy to include him. Viserys thought of betrothing Qoren and Rhaenyra briefly, show us that and Qoren’s reaction to the idea.
Retcon the Cargylls into being a Stony Dornish house and they (like Cole) decided they might rise to better heights in KL instead of Sunspear. they literally only show up at one (1) other point and they’re extinct in the modern day anyway so its a retcon that doesn't impact a lot of other houses but does add an interesting element to their characters.
Illegitimate Characters - Alys Rivers, Sara Snow, and Gaemon Palehair - are also absolutely perfect for racebending. Gaemon's mother, Lady Essie, could have been either mixed Dornish or Essosi/Summer Islander. Sara and Alys could be anything at all!
**technically Corlys Velaryon and his mother & grandmother, since he doesn’t have a canon mother (Dornish would be interesting considering his involvement in the Stepstones War, but also the Summer Islands are right there, there’s nothing stopping Corwyn and Daemon Velaryon from marrying some rich noble Summer Islander while seafaring), which would make Corlys biracial, and Laena & Laenor mixed race, so they could have a PoC right away in the main cast without the “we race bent all the Velaryons except not Alyssa, you know, the one that is actually related to the main Targaryen line? yeah she’s white” thing.
i mean they did racebend Mysaria so good job i guess, you got the easiest one here to do right
This way you get main characters as PoC, but it’s not this really bad, clear gimmick bc they completely ignore that Alyssa, and therefore the entire Targaryen line (except maybe Rhaenyra, Aegon, Helaena, Aemond, and Daeron) should be visibly mixed race! they get to have the cool aesthetic choices of Corlys and his kids having white hair so they could flex their new budget with a plethora of Targaryen wigs while not ignoring and fucking with their own canon. The only main house that could be wholesale racebent without screwing up the entire thing is House Strong, because they only interact with Rhaenyra (as in, we have no record of them marrying into another house like we do the Velaryons) and they're extinct in the main timeline so it doesn't matter in the long run what they look like.
BUT - you just can’t make any of the Valyrian houses (except maybe the Celtigars lmao) or Andal houses PoC without drastically changing the dynamics of Westeros as well as what the other ruling houses look like, because these people are deeply inbred even excluding Targ brother-sister fuckery. And At This Point In Time, you can’t really change any of the First Men into PoC either. So that means extinct houses (like the Cargylls) and non noble characters.
But the great thing about GRRM, ASOIAF, and this world as a whole is that George is not interested in telling a story from the perspective of “insiders” but “outsiders” - the bastards, cripples, and broken things. There are a lot of these types of characters in this story and if they had race bent them, and actually thought about the effects of that, even on a subtextual level, they might have been able to tell the rich story they wanted. Instead, they just went for what’s coolest.
#hotd critical#house of the dragon#getting on my soap box#anti hotd#race and ethnicity in asioaf#like they could have made someone myrish and dealt with their history of slavery and how it descends from valyria.#but no. they hate me personally.#also if anyone says they should have racebent the hightowers i'm gonna throw adwd at you. that would have been SIGNIFICANTLY WORSE#than the velaryon mess we currently have.

Thought A Rarity On Paper // Billy Collins
Here I am thanking you for this fine copy of Jack Spicer’s posthumous “One Night Stand and Other Poems” (Grey Fox Press, 1980), introductions by Donald Allen and Robert Duncan.
It’s such a rare little bird, I was careful to purify my hands before sliding it out of its clear Mylar sleeve.
I was careful, too, when I turned the pages, but when Jesus began making out his will and Alice in Wonderland went missing from the chessboard, the book had to be restrained from taking flight and flapping its many wings against a window pane.
So now, the front cover is bent back a little like a clam with its shell slightly ajar the way Spicer’s mouth could look sometimes when we would see him at Gino and Carlo or in the park by the Church of Sts. Peter and Paul, where he would often sit cross-legged under a shade tree.
There on hot summer afternoons he would suffer the company of young poets if they observed the courtesy of arriving with cold quart bottles of Rainier Ale, as green as the sports section of the paper.
It was a practice that my friend Tom and I and his friend A. B. Cole followed religiously. Spicer even called us “The Jesuits” for he knew where we had gone to school.
To be imperfectly truthful, I was intimidated by his reality— a lonely homosexual adult who dressed funnily in summery shirts and baggy pants, belt buckle to the side, his sad moon-face pocked as the moon itself, and with a name like a medieval vender’s.
He would talk about poetics, of which we knew nothing, and about the other Berkeley poets, but we poetry juniors felt more at home when he talked about Willie McCovey and we would be on to another still cold quart.
Then a forceful wind came off the Bay and blew Jack Spicer away, found a year later at 40 on the floor of an elevator going neither up nor down.
Later still, Tom would be blown over a golden bridge, his soft inner arm full of holes, and I sadly lost track of the sardonic Andy Cole.
And here I still remain, more than twice Spicer’s final age, rolling through the pages of his little book,
listening to his bewildering birds, and watching Beauty walk, not like a lake but among the coffee cups and soup tureens,
causing me to open my hands and allow this green aeronaut of paper to lift off and fly around my yellow house and beat its wings against glass as the thrilling sky continues to change slowly from blue to black then, miraculously, back to blue once more.

I don’t know what’s better, Cassandra being a fan of Varric’s spicer books, or Cole appearing out of thin air to be like “SHE READ THEM OUT LOUD TO ME! WE BOTH HATE THE CAPTAIN”

Jin Shin Jyutsu - Taking it back to God's will.
With in mind those who know and practice Jin Shin Jyutsu.
I write the following to anyone who knows and practices Jin Shin Jyutsu noting that the angle from which I put this forward is the belief in the Creator, and that nothing happens even when we practice Jin Shin Jyutsu or other, without the will of God.
At a time when I am aware that I have lived my life not really fully understanding in my being that nothing you do, Joumana, is the result of your effort through the commonly known right tools. And with the awareness of how much I love the practice of Jin Shin Jyustsu and the ease of falling into that place where in my whole being I revert any positive outcome to this beautiful knowledge, I care to tie it back consciously to God's will. I do that, with the beauty of what came to me, the beauty of tying certain supplications to certain applications of Jin Shin Jyutsu. It is only a start, it is a start nevertheless, and sharing it may bring beauty from others who may too, share what they know.
There is a table that Laila Moustafa, in her teaching, has shared with us, in Arabic. The table holds each of the 26 points and tied each of those to a state of being, or ability. My knowledge is still early as to absorbing the content that Mary Burmeister has handed to us through her texts in English, and so I cannot trace back the exact location of the content shared by Laila in a table format from the text of Mary Burmeister, and it may as well be the extraction from Laila of content spread in Mary's texts. Gratitude to both in any case, as teachers passing on knowledge, and to Jiro Murai.
As I set myself to go deeper rather than wider, in the practice of opening and energizing the first 10 points, rather than moving on to the remaining 16, I reflect on certain words: point #9 Letting go of the old and opening up to the new: التخلي عن القديم واستقبال الجديد )هذا الوصف من الذاكرة وأظنه مغاير في ذاكرتي عن قائمة أ. ليلى مصطفى), makes me tend to remember this invocation: لا حول ولا قوة إلا بالله There is no might nor power except with Allah - while this is the translation I found online, the supplication has the word hawl which refer to something changing state from one state to another, and this is where it ties back to #9: Change, a supplication reverting back any change of state to God's will and power. Another point is point #1 movement حركة, point #8 freedom in movement حرية الحركة, those two points inspired in me the invocation, or part of a longer supplication and here I only focus on that part: اللهم إني أعوذ بك من العجز والكسل O Allah! I seek refuge with You incapacity and laziness. While mobility and freedom in mobility or movement is not necessarily directly tied to matters of incapacity or laziness, I sense that at this time I need to tie them, at a time when I pray that my movement and ease in it, not only the bodily of course, in existence rather, be moving in a direction of being in the place that is of highest effectiveness and virtue, and that demands a this very time, having what it takes, away from certain diverting factors.
This is what I have for now on that. And God willing I will move through the 26 points with in mind tying them back to invocations and supplications and knowing what it is that while performing the practice, I am ultimately asking of Allah - God.

Proofing note: This is a text that is not proofed with terminology and accuracy from the textbooks and teachers. I write it in rawness at the very point I am at in my knowledge, this is a disclaimer that the content may contain mistakes and so, for students and seeker of that knowledge to revert back to books and teachers.

Harding: 2023 NCAA Division II Football National Champions
MCKINNEY, Texas — Harding made history by winning its first NCAA Division II national championship in a 38-7 victory over top-seeded Colorado School of Mines at McKinney ISD Stadium in Texas on Saturday.
The Bisons recorded 502 rushing yards in the winning effort to become the first school in NCAA history with more than 6,000 yards on the ground in a single season.
"It's 100 percent guys that love each other, believe in the brotherhood that care deeply," Harding head coach Paul Simmons said. "Let's honor God with how we love one another, how we work, how we sacrifice… that was really evident with how we battled today."
Running back Blake Delacruz led the way for Harding with 212 yards on 27 carries, while Braden Jay rushed 11 times for 161 yards and three touchdowns.
Colorado School of Mines struck first on a two-yard touchdown pass from quarterback John Matocha to running back Nick Roper. The score gave the Orediggers a 7-0 lead with 9:06 to play in the first quarter.
But from there, it was all Bisons.
Harding, who finished the season with a perfect 14-0 record, scored 38 unanswered points and held Colorado School of Mines to 341 yards of total offense to secure the championship victory.
Bison running back Jhalen Spicer started the scoring party with a 10-yard rushing touchdown to tie the game 7-7 at the end of the first quarter. Jay gave Harding the lead with rushing scores of 10 and nine yards in the second quarter to push the Bisons ahead 21-7 at the half.
Harding made a statement on its opening drive of the third quarter with a four-play, 87-yard drive capped by a 73-yard rushing touchdown by Jay.
Leading 31-7 with 11:58 to play in the fourth quarter, quarterback Cole Keylon pounded in a one-yard rushing touchdown, giving the Bisons a 38-7 lead.
Keylon completed two passes for 46 yards and added 20 rushing yards on seven carries.

Last few weekend’s of the Times have included interviews w/Douglas Stuart (still haven’t read Shuggie Bain let alone his new book), Saoirse-Monica Jackson (from Derry girls), Michael Rosen on his cats and Kate Spicer on her beloved dog, Wolfie dying, Sharon Osbourne, Esme Young (I’m so glad Sewing Bee is back), and Steve Coogan + Sarah Solemani (their new show Chivalry is a lot better than I thought it would be). Also Diane Kruger, Alice Cooper, Jodie Comer and Richard Coles (who’s now retired).
Also great piece on Basquiat and the end of the golden age of girlbands plus reviews of The Split, Chivalry, The Thief, His Wife and the Canoe, Derry Girls, Gentleman Jack and Norman Scott’s book. There was also a review of The Northman which sounds good but I don’t really want to go to the cinema at the moment.

Yes, I’m going to admit. The show surprised me.

(Hopefully by this point you’ve finished Season 1 of ‘Dollface’, the kind of person who isn’t bothered by spoilers, or are just deciding if you still want to keep watching.)

-
I had not read anything about the show and just went through the motions (ready to rate it at the most a 4/10) and was surprised how good the jokes were.
Not only that, I was surprised by the actual content. Looks like I’ve found another MA show that I can add to my list!
PS; I’m undecided on what sub-genre to use. It’s basically 70% real...and 30% fantasy. But could the fantasy be happening only in Jules’ mind?
(But in episode 10...Izzy could see Cat Lady!)
PPS: So...are the friends...Older Millenials? Vulture puts them as 30-somethings.
(I was also confused that Goran Visnjic was playing a 45-year-old...in his 50′s...but....then after I checked his IMDB profile...he actually was 47 when Season 1 was released! What!? He was in his 30′s when he finished up ER!?
Yes! It’s actually Maura Tierney who is older! By 7-years!)
PPPS: Now I think I kind of like the reasoning of ‘Girls going to the toilet in groups’ --- there’s a serious safety concern if they don’t.
--------
HIGHLIGHT:
INT. MKUNDU LAUNCH PARTY - NIGHT
STELLA and JULES are sipping their drinks. MADISON is standing in between them. STELLA puts hers down.
STELLA I'm gonna run to the bathroom.
MADISON Of course.
MADISON starts to follow STELLA, but stops after she notices JULES isn't heading to the same direction.
MADISON What are you doing? We have to go with Stella.
JULES Oh, I don't have to pee.
MADISON What does needing to pee have to do with going to the bathroom?
JULES Is this a riddle?
MADISON Girls are supposed to go to the bathroom together.
She pauses and stares at her friend. Capiche?
JULES Well, yeah, but isn't that rule kind of stupid?
MADISON You're right, Jules. No, it's stupid. And cliques are stupid and loyalty is stupid...and bein there for your friends is stupid. Thank God you're too good for all that.
JULES Madison, I mean, come on, this---What do you think this whole night was about? This is for you.
MADISON scruitinises her friend.
MADISON Just forget it.
JULES stands there as her friend walks off and heads to the toilet.
JULES Madison, wait.
INT. CLUB (HALLWAY TO TOILETS) - NIGHT
JULES arrives just in time to see MADISON rushing out from the women's toilet.
JULES Hey.
MADISON She's not in the bathroom.
The reverse shot reveals that IZZY is now standing next to JULES.
JULES Really?
IZZY Hey.
MADISON AND JULES Whoa!
IZZY If you guys are looking for your friend Stella, I think I saw her get into a van with a weird older guy.
MADISON Wait, a weird guy with a van?
MADISON throws a look at JULES. Extremely concerned. We know what 'guy in white van' means....right?
IZZY Yes, but she seemed totally fine. I mean, she wasn't wearing shoes, but...
JULES Excuse us.
JULES and MADISON head to the exit.
EXT. CLUB (ENTRANCE) - NIGHT
JULES and MADISON arrive just in time to see a white van peel off.
JULES AND MADISON (shouts) Stella!
MADISON throws her hands up and turns to JULES.
MADISON You see what happens when we don't go to the bathroom together?
--------
My verdict of the episode: 6/10
Timestamp Commentary: None (One to be published only by request)
My Formal review about the show: None (a piece for 'Comedy To Watch’ coming soon!)
