“I’m Ready To Go, Give Me The Green Light”: Catfish And The Bottlemen Are On A Roll And Have No Plans Of Slowing Down

It’s hard to believe that Catfish and the Bottlemen only released their debut album The Balcony less than three years ago. In that time, aided by a non-stop touring schedule and a knack for writing catchy, melodic rock tunes, they’ve become one of the UK’s biggest exports.

The Welsh four piece’s Australian roots run strong – the band are named after vocalist Vann McCann’s first childhood musical memory; a Sydney street busker who plays beer bottles strung to a wire. For McCann, though, the Australian connection goes even deeper. “My mum and dad got married in Australia and they had me over there. It’s always been a real 360 when I get off the plane. I’m there for them, on their behalf, so there’s always a buzz in the air when we get to Australia,” he says. The band are preparing to return to Australian stages for the second time this year, as part of Splendour In The Grass.

Catfish and the Bottlemen’s reputation as touring workhorses isn’t one they’ve earned lightly. Besides stopping momentarily to record their second album, 2016’s The Ride, they have been in constant tour mode. When McCann first answers the call to Music Feeds he couldn’t be more excited to chat about the band’s year so far. He rattles off the list of show dates and venue capacities that will take the band all the way until the end of the year, as if they are printed on his hand.

“We have been getting up to everything, this year has been absolute class. We started in Australia then we went to South America, then did six weeks in the US, we just got back to the UK, then we do Russia tomorrow, then we do Liverpool Arena next week, and then we do Finsbury Park in London which is 35,000…” There isn’t a hint of exhaustion in his voice. McCann is someone that very clearly loves what he is doing.

To the outside world, the band’s success may seem almost as if it’s happened overnight, but in reality Catfish and the Bottlemen have been chipping away at their local scene for the better part of the last decade, from playing in car parks and local Battle of the Bands comps, to jumping on any bill they could – the Catfish and the Bottlemen success story isn’t one that has come easily.

“We definitely have been grafting away at it. The reason why this year is so much of a buzz is because these shows that we’re about to play, all these dates that are lined up and where the album is now – we got our first number one with that last one – it exceeded our expectations.

“This is what we were dreaming of when we were sat back in the van when it was broke down on the side of the road years and years ago, just going, ‘Don’t worry about this lads, we won’t even need a van one day, we’re gonna have private jets, we’re gonna have big speed boats picking us up, helicopters, all kinds of stuff. Don’t worry about this van breaking down.’ When we’d be feeling like, ‘What are we gonna do? How are we gonna get there? How are we gonna get home? No one’s gonna notice us.’

“You always hear of these stories where bands are like, ‘We just released this music and it took off overnight.’ Our [success] wasn’t accidental. We really tried to get a deal, we tried to sell out all these venues, and we tried to make big albums and make people fall in love with our band. So it’s a nice feeling to know that it’s very clear that we’ve worked our arses off. We’re very forward about it. We didn’t get handed it, we didn’t get taken up overnight or had loads of money thrown at us or put on every magazine, every billboard. We just release the songs and the people grab it and share it and sing it.”

While their success at home may have been incremental, steadily building across years and years of hard work, their rise overseas has been much quicker. When they toured Australia as part of Falls Festival earlier this year, their sideshows were at Melbourne’s 170 Russell and Sydney’s Enmore Theatre – rooms that fit 1,000 and 1,600 punters respectively. And while the shows took no time to sell out, it’s the venues on their upcoming run, Melbourne’s Festival Hall and Sydney’s Hordern Pavilion – rooms five times the size – that really show this growth.

“Wait to see where it’s going to be in another couple of months,” says McCann. “It just keeps going, the people keep getting more excited and putting us in this position. It’s worldwide now. We are doing 35,000 next week at home, but we’ve been playing in the UK for ten years. It makes you not want to stop. That’s why I know all these dates off the back of my hand

“We’re really fortunate that people get what I’m saying. When I’m writing the songs I sit there and I think, ‘I love this, I reckon the people are gonna love it,’ so it’s nice to know they’re on the same wavelength. It’s a buzz every day. You wake up buzzing.”

More recently, Catfish and the Bottlemen added another show to their Australian run, something a little quainter in Wollongong. But whether they’re playing to a sold-out arena or to 750 fans in the ‘Gong, for McCann every show he gets to play is a bonus.

“People say what’s the highlight or what’s your best show yet, but we played one in Argentina for Lollapalooza to about 30,000 people, then the next night we played to 400 or 500 people in a little bar in Buenos Aires. We did the same in America last year. In New York we played this venue, and after we sold out the biggest room we went back and did the smallest room. It was like two or three thousand to 150 cap and there’s nothing like it.

“I love playing massive gigs, I love playing festivals, then when you bring it back down to those little ones where you’re crashing into each other on stage and you’re getting caught on each other’s wires and falling over, knocking each other’s guitars out of tune because you’re so close. That’s where we honed our trait, that’s where we learnt our recipe,” says McCann.

“We’re just young lads buzzing to be doing what we’re doing and we’ve always said we’re going to do it as well, so it’s nice to come home and go ‘Mum and Dad I told you, didn’t I? I told you I’d be flying to Australia.

“Back in the day we were just little shits having a ciggie out the back and people going, ‘When are you getting a job?’ and we were like, ‘Don’t worry about us, we’ll be fine in a few years,’ and now they have to see us on the telly and they’re like, ‘Shit, they weren’t joking.’ ”

Catfish and the Bottlemen are keen to build on the momentum that’s currently fuelling them, so while McCann and the band aren’t ready to stop touring anytime soon, album number three is definitely on the way. “I turned up to management six months ago with the album ready, and the label, everyone. I’ve been saying, I’m ready to go, give me the green light, let’s record. I’d release [an album] every six months like The Beatles used to because they’re the documentaries I grew up watching. You could do it like that and you could really sing live and you could really cut it live. That’s why we wanted to be a band that didn’t need any tricks, didn’t need anything, just us four playing,” says McCann.

“We grew up loving bands. We still peep out our dressing rooms going, ‘Oh my god look, The Strokes are playing tonight, oh look there they are, they’re walking on.’ I’m still very much a music fan, so to be among this and to be flying as well, and to know the next album’s written and we’re gonna come straight back. There will be no disappearing, no ‘Oh here they are, they’re coming back.’ No comebacks, we just carry on,” says McCann.

It’s been just over a year since Catfish and the Bottlemen released The Balcony, and with their intense touring schedule, it’s hard to believe they’d have any full songs written, let alone a whole album waiting to be recorded.

But for McCann, the songwriting is the easy part. It’s finding time to get into the studio that is tricky. “It takes me as long to write them as it does for you to listen to it. I’m not one of those guys who bangs his head against his wall or goes to the fucking desert and grows a beard and takes acid [saying], ‘I found myself, I found a new way,’ there’s none of that going on.”

“When I was a kid, all I wanted from my favourite bands was to hear new songs. Once you get bored of the album – especially if you love a band, you buy the album and for six months you won’t stop playing it. After six months you’re ready, you’re like I want the next one now, I know every word, every drumbeat, I want the next one and I want to see them live again. I don’t know why anybody who does this would stop and take a break unless they have a baby – which is not likely for a while – then you’ve got to go home and be a good parent, haven’t ya? But until that time I’m just going to plough right through.”

Still, even with the news of new music being on the horizon, it seems unlikely Australian fans will get a chance to hear a new tune or two on their upcoming tour. “I wanted to start playing some new stuff but I was only going to do it if we had a chance to start recording. The first time round we played ‘7’ live and there were YouTube versions going up. It’s good because people know the songs straight away, but I think this time I’d rather give people the full version, fully finished, as opposed to little crappy live versions or acoustic versions bopping about, but tell [the fans] when it comes out they’re going to love it if they loved those last two.”

“This is what I’ve always loved about the band. We’ve never tried to write a song that fits the radio or is catchy, we’ve always just tried to write songs that hit you with how it feels and pins you to the back wall, proper gut music, so when it comes on you just have to own up to it.”

For Australian fans who are just as excited to see Catfish and the Bottlemen as McCann is about hitting the stage, you may get a chance to see them another time this year. “I know we were only there a couple of months ago but I’m trying to convince management to get us there before the end of the year again. They said we’ve got to record an album but I reckon I could do that in a week or two.”

Before their (possible) third Australian visit in 2017, Catfish and the Bottlemen will be heading to North America to support Green Day, playing in some of the biggest venues of their career. While they’re only in the support slot this time, McCann is certain it won’t be for long. “Walking into the venues, I used to always say to the boys, just to soundcheck in a stadium, just the idea of music and stadium, those two words together, there’s something about it that gives me goosebumps.

“Just sound checking in places like the Rose Bowl and Wrigley Field in Chicago, the Rose Bowl’s like 90,000 cap, so to be playing shows that big – just to sound check in those venues – it’s a fucking dream for me,” says McCann.

“I’m only 24 so I have no doubt about it, in a couple of years time we’ll be racking those up ourselves.”

There's a wonderful monochrome image of a BOAC de Havilland Comet 4 over Sydney Harbour. The harbour bridge is prominent, but look closely and you'll see there's no Opera House. That's because the photo was taken 60 years ago and the first British jet flew into Sydney's Mascot in 1959 before construction began on the Opera House. That flight slashed the journey time from London to Sydney from 47 hours to 36.

Four years earlier, the British Overseas Airways Corporation, one of the many forerunners of British Airways, had introduced a "tourist class" service on its Lockheed Constellation between Britain and Australia, introducing less wealthy travellers to airline travel.

Apart from Qantas, no international airline has had such a long-standing relationship between Australia and Europe as British Airways. So, as the airline celebrates its "centenary", let's mark some of the key moments in its evolution and its place in Australian travel, with much thanks to BA's official historian.

WHAT'S IN A NAME?

British Airways didn't exist until 1936 and for most of the 20th century Britain's national carrier flew under a succession of other names, most notably BOAC and British European Airways. Yet the airline dates its birthday back to August 25, 1919. This is believed to be because Koninklijke Luchtvaart Maatschappij – better known as KLM – is generally considered the world's longest surviving airline. Its first flight from London's Croydon airport took off to Amsterdam, with a British pilot at the controls of a leased British plane, on May 17, 1920.

WORLD'S FIRST INTERNATIONAL PASSENGER SERVICE

Regardless, it's accepted the world's first scheduled international service took off on August 25, 1919, at 9.10am, from London's Hounslow Heath bound for Paris, piloted by "Bill" Lawford. The only passenger was an Evening Standard reporter who had paid Britain's first commercial airline, Aircraft Transport and Travel, 20 guineas for the privilege (though the flight also contained several "brace of grouse destined for the tables of discerning Parisians").

According to the reporter's exclusive after the de Hallivand's arrival at Le Bourget, the trip involved much "hedge-hopping" and "wave-hopping" as Lawford (in an open cockpit!) followed the railway lines and cross-Channel ferries, due to poor visibility, before rising to the maximum height of 4000 feet (1220 metres) over France.

Still, the first international commercial flight, was deemed a huge success, flying "at express speed" and taking a mere 2½ hours to cover 350 kilometres.

LONDON TO AUSTRALIA … IN JUST 12 DAYS

Aircraft Transport and Travel was joined by a plethora of privately-owned British airlines offering international journeys with flying aces from World War I as pilots. But the Brits struggled because rival European airlines were subsidised by governments. In 1924, British airlines were rationalised and Imperial Airways (the real forerunner of BA) was created with a mandate to develop routes to the furthest reaches of the British Empire: South Africa, India and Australia.

Fast forward to April 13, 1935, and Imperial and Qantas launched its ground-breaking, 20,500-kilometre service from London's Croydon airfield to Brisbane. The journey took just 12 days, leaving London at lunchtime on a Saturday, and arriving the following week at Brisbane – after 32 stops. Part of the trip, Paris to Brindisi, was completed by rail. Mussolini's fascist government refused permission for a foreign airline to fly over Italian airspace.

DON'T MENTION THE WAR

BOAC started operations on April Fool's Day 1940, during Britain's "darkest hour" as Imperial merged with British Airways. During World War II, BOAC and Qantas joined forces, particularly on the Horseshoe Route between Auckland and Durban that kept wartime correspondence flowing throughout the "empire".

Immediately after Germany's surrender, the two airlines combined on two different services. On May 31, 1945, the first post-war flight from Britain to Sydney left Bournemouth. A year later, they introduced a twice-weekly flying boat service between Poole harbour and Sydney's Rose Bay, which took just five days, via Egypt, Iraq, Pakistan, India, Burma and Singapore. And before May 1946 was out, the first post-war BOAC/Qantas land service began using converted Avro Lancaster bombers cunningly disguised as Lancastrian passenger planes.

The Lancastrian only accommodated nine passengers seated along the side of the fuselage like parachutists. But it did contain what it is arguably the first "flat bed" in commercial aviation – a bunk in what would now be considered the overhead locker. The switch over location between BOAC and Qantas staff was Karachi.

ONWARDS AND UPWARDS

In December 1948, the elegant four-engine Lockheed Constellation began a weekly service that slashed flying time between Britain and Australia. A poster from that era, advertising Australia to Britons, shows outback stockmen watching the Constellation soar above them in a gum-strewn blue sky.

The Constellation record was itself smashed in 1953 when British European Airways, usually confined to Europe, entered the London-to-Christchurch air race to publicise the British-made Vickers Viscount V700's speed between "short legs" (19,900 kilometres in less than 41 hours). But it was the Comet that introduced the "jet age" to Australia, quickly followed by Boeing's 707, which BOAC used on Australian services from 1962. Another poster, showing a blonde female surfer striding towards the Pacific is from that period, circa 1965.

Over the next 30 years British Airways purchased 36 Boeing 747s – the original "jumbo jet" – more than any other airline and several flew to Australia. But BA's Concorde, which flew at 2180km/h (cruise speed) from 1969-2003, never had a chance to test the record to Sydney.

Winston Churchill was the first British PM to fly across the Atlantic when he travelled to meet US President Roosevelt. His BOAC Boeing 314 flying boat flew from Plymouth, via Bermuda and Norfolk, Virginia, then on to Washington DC.

1952

After the death of her father, King George VI, Princess Elizabeth left Kenya instead of continuing her royal tour to Australia. She arrived on a BOAC plane at Heathrow as Queen Elizabeth II.

2005

British PM Tony Blair was aboard a British Airways 777-200 when it set a new record for the world's longest non-stop commercial flight from Brussels to Melbourne – 17,157 kilometres in 18 hours 45 minutes.

2011

Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh flew the first non-stop flight from Perth to London aboard a BA 777 after a Commonwealth Heads of Government Conference. Now Qantas flies the 14,498 kilometre non-stop route in about 18 hours and plans a non-stop flight from Sydney to London by 2022.

Daimler Airway was a subsidiary of BSA (Birmingham Small Arms Company, known for its engines and motorcycles). Swallowed by Imperial, and thus BA, it employed the first "cabin boys" to serve passengers.

1967

Until the 1960s, male and female BA flight attendants wore military-style uniforms. That changed when the first made-to-measure uniforms for the 1500 female "stewardesses" employed by British European Airways were designed by Sir Hardy Amies, the Queen's couturier.

Meanwhile, BOAC introduced paper "mini-dresses" for stewardesses flying to the West Indies. Meant to be discarded after each flight, legend has it sometimes they didn't last that long, with "high-spirited male passengers tempted to take a cigarette lighter to see what would happen".

To celebrate delivery of its first Boeing 747s, BOAC awarded Clive Evans the commission of designing its new female uniform, beating Mary Quant. It chose between Caribbean blue or coral pink for its summer uniform, which was made from Terylene and cotton so it could be washed in a hotel sink and left to drip-dry overnight.

1992

Roland Klein's distinctive red, white and blue vertical stripes had been considered a great success, but Paul Costelloe produced what many regard as the signature BA outfit: a classically tailored single-breasted suit with a silky print blouse or dress and a distinctive upturned boater.

2004

Julien MacDonald, whose outfits had been worn by Nicole Kidman, Kylie Minogue and many other celebrities, was tasked with designing outfits for 25,000 staff of different body shapes and sizes.

2019

Ozwald Boateng is BA's new designer. His top secret uniforms, now for 32,000 staff, will be unveiled before the "centenary" on August 25 this year.

This morning we slept in again but nothing too late, and then we headed to breakfast. I do have to say that their eggs are much better here but I miss American breakfast. I miss sausage, I miss normal bacon, I miss hash browns. I cannot wait to have a nice big breakfast with bacon and sausage and eggs.

After breakfast Nia and I came back to the hotel to grab a few things for our whale sighting tour!

We left the hotel, made our way to the subway station to head over to Circular Quay for the last time. It is now so simple navigating through the stations. We have definitely mastered Museum, Townhall, and Circular Quay station.

Once we got off the subway, we walked all the way across the harbor to get to where our boat was departing from. When we arrived, I have to admit, all I thought was, “Damn, this boat is small!!" I knew it was small but it was much smaller in person. I was so excited and couldn't wait to get on board.

The captain of the boat gave us these big wind breakers and said to prepare to be cold and get hit with lots of winds. We boarded the boat and finally headed out in the harbor.

It was so beautiful to see the harbor from a completely different angle and perspective. This was the perfect day for today . The sun was out, the sky was clear, and it was actually nice and warm in the sun We couldn’t have asked for better conditions. The boat was a lot of fun! It was a speed boat and you felt everything the boat felt.

We made our way out to the water, and boy he wasn't kidding about cold, wind, and waves. We reached one stopping point and he gave us a little talk about the whales. He told us that the best way to find wales is from their blow hole. So we began searching for a needle in a haystack (whales in the ocean).

It wasn't long before we saw our first whale and a school of dolphins. I thought this was amazing, but little did I know we were in for so much more. We saw at least 5 pods of whales, with multiple whales in them!

We saw them come up from water, flip their tails back into the water, peak their heads out and almost dance, and saw the splash of a breech. Then, all of s sudden when we were just about to turn around back to the harbor, a whale came right up to the side of our boat to check us out!

It was amazing! I was so scared I actually jumped because I was so caught off guard. I have never been that close to a whale before, and all in all, the entire spotting was amazing. This was definitely a highlight of my trip and I think whales may be my favorite ocean animal now!

We headed back to the harbor right at sunset and it was beautiful to be in the water for this. I will miss the views of Sydney I will admit that. We came back to the hotel and in about 30 minutes it was time for our last group dinner.

We made our way to Blackbird and ate some dinner. I can now say that I have tried Kangaroo. For those who are curious, it tastes like a meatier steak. It wasn't bad but I don't think I would order it myself.

At the end of dinner, lovely Delilah made superlatives for everyone on the trip and this was such a good idea what a way to end the trip. I was awarded "Most likely to update the group on my life in ten years" and "Aioli Queen". The first award was because I have posted very extensive blog posts everyday and the second one is because I love aioli and if I can get it I will. The best part is it is so much more available in Australia. I will also miss aioli.

After dinner, we all ordered our last legal drink(with the exception of Kayla because she's 21) for awhile. I ordered a fairy floss cosmo and it was very good. After we finished our drinks, we made our way for one last gelato splurge.

After gelato, we made our way back to the hotel. I showered, got all of my things together, packed everything, and tried to stay up for as long as I possibly could. The goal is to stay awake for as long as possible tonight so I can sleep as long as I can on the plane.

I'm not ready for this 15 hour flight tomorrow, but it also doesn't feel like we're leaving. As much as it didn't hit me that I was going to Australia, it hasn't hit me that I'm leaving either. I've had an amazing time and I will do one more conclusion post tomorrow. Until then, I'm gonna try to stay awake and take a nap. See you soon fam💗

Given that today is the anniversary of Hood's sinking, could we get the mun to tell us about her life, her place in the world, and just what that sinking meant for Britain and the world at large?

HOOOOOOO BOOOOIIIIIIIIIIIII…

I need to open with a disclaimer, I am an armature historian at best and an armchair historian at worst. I read a lot from varies sources but I do not claim anything I say as correct or disputable. I am just a boat nerd. That said let’s get started:

To understand Hood you need a crash course in what she was: a battlecruiser.

Battlecruisers emerged from the tumultuous ironclad era that I will not go into detail on other than to say due to a combination of the terrible power and terrible fuel economy of early steam engines and the reluctance of global powers to have refuelling stations around the world they’d have to defend leading to two main types of ship types being developed: Large fuel-hungry and powerful ships meant for fighting in or near the home waters (battleships) and those sacrificing power for better range or even forgoing turrets to be able to have masts (cruisers).

As steam engines became better the roles changed, but that still left the want to have a ship that could not only catch the cruisers threatening far off territories by also beat them. This became the large light cruiser and later when they started carrying battleship guns battlecruisers.

Remember this. Battlcruisers were meant to be cruiser hunters. Perhaps it is the name that had people thinking they belonged on the battle line.

Either way they became a favourite in both the navy and the public eye. The idea of a big bun ship that was fast enough to control the flow of battle with a SPEED IS ARMOUR mentality caught on, which went well enough until the battle of Jutland.

Again I am being light on the details but then the two battlecruiser lines clashed two British BCs ended up being detonated under the heavy calibre shells.

Suddenly battlecruisers did not seem so wonderful and the new Admiral-class battlecruiser were all cancelled except for one that was too far along in construction to let go: HMS Hood.

They did what they could to shore up her now glaring weaknesses during her construction but there was only so much they could be that wouldn’t delay the launch to unacceptable levels. This was already the beginning of the end when she was sent to serve on the battle line.

But we are focusing on her darling nature and on launch she was a very impressive ship. The biggest and fastest thing ever built boasting 6 15 inch main guns and the very latest technology. Immediately she became a symbol that although bloodied in the great war she Great Britain still ruled the waves with a steel fist.

Although far from the first ship to carry the royal family carry then she did with her fellow BC HMS Repulse become just as endeared to the commonwealth as she was at home, her name becoming synonymous with British might and true, under the Washington treaty few ships were built that could match her on paper and indeed only the post-war HMS Vanguard would come close and only the modern Queen Elisabeth-class carriers would truly dwarf her in the Royal Navy. While fully aware of her weaknesses the navy kept them quiet and let the Hood be what they needed her to be, a mighty symbol to strengthen the bonds between nations in a post world war world, to carry the flag and show the world Britain was still top bulldog.

From East London to Sydney to San Francisco and Vancouver she saw the sinking of HMAS Sydney, held parties on her decks that were open to all, curious civilians were given tours and the famous Royal Navy Jubilee Cocktails flowed like water, again I am trying to be brief but this is to be the true spirit of the Mighty Hood a peacemaker, a diplomat, a socialite, and a terrible secret that she’s not as mighty as people think. She was never going to be a great warship, the earliest a full rebuild could be scheduled was 1945, 4 yours after her sinking and by then carriers would take predominance. , but where she shone was in peace time, as the ship young boys would have tows and posters of, and that armchair admirals would saw was invincible.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex arrived at Hervey Bay airport this morning.

Following the arrival, the couple separated with Meghan travelling on a whale watching boat to Fraser Island.

Harry is undertaking most of today’s engagements solo. News.com reports: “A spokesperson has confirmed to news.com.au they’re “working towards” a public appearance on the island today – most likely at Kingfisher Bay Jetty for the scheduled meet-and-greet with the public later this afternoon.” I do expect we’ll see the Duchess this afternoon. The news follows yesterday’s announcement confirming Meghan would be “pacing herself” due to the exhausting tour schedule. Due to the terrain on the Island, choosing today for a brief rest seems very wise. Hannah Furness notes: “Having done the Fraser Island tour a decade ago, can confirm is can be a very bumpy ride. Recall my head hitting the roof of our car at one point.”

‘While the Prince has spent most of his time in Australia speeding around Sydney in a motorcade of slick vehicles, today’s transport will be a little different. If morning sickness isn’t a problem for mum-to-be Meghan, motion sickness would’ve been, should she have followed through with today’s events.Blue skies and light clouds are covering the island. It’s only 23C but the humidity makes the environment seem hotter than it is.

At 122 km long, it is the largest sand island in the world.

Majestic remnants of tall rainforest growing on sand and half the world’s perched freshwater dune lakes are found inland from the beach. The combination of shifting sand-dunes, tropical rainforests and lakes makes it an exceptional site.

Fraser Island’s hardwood trees were used to build the London docks in the 1930s due to their famed toughness.

The Butchulla people are the indigenous people of Fraser Island. The Butchulla people’s traditional name for Fraser Island was K’gari which means paradise. According to Butchulla legend, Fraser Island was named K’gari after the beautiful spirit who helped Yindingie, messenger of the great god Beeral, create the land. As a reward to K’gari for her help Beeral changed her into an idyllic island with trees, flowers and lakes. He put birds, animals and people on the island to keep her company. Captain Cook first sighted the Fraser Island Butchulla people during 1770 and named Indian Head on the eastern beach after them. Colonization by Europeans caused great conflicts with the Aboriginal people as the European settlers did not understand or respect their tribal boundaries, their social structure or the importance to them of their environment. In 2014 an Australian Federal Court granted Native title rights to Fraser Island to the Butchulla people.

Meghan learned more about Cook’s expedition during her first solo engagement at the Royal Academy of Arts exhibition ‘Oceania’.

For his first engagement of the day, Harry was greeted with a Welcome to Country Smoking Ceremony.

At McKenzies Jetty The Duke of Sussex met Rangers to learn more about the work involved in the preservation of Fraser Island.

The visit was part of the dedication of the site to the Queen’s Commonwealth Canopy. The QCC is an initiative begun in 2015 as a network of forest conservation programmes throughout the 53 countries of the Commonwealth of Nations. The QCC presents a rare opportunity to unite the whole Commonwealth family and save one of the world’s most important natural habitats – forests. By creating a pan-Commonwealth network of forest conservation projects, the QCC will mark Her Majesty The Queen’s service to the Commonwealth while conserving indigenous forests for future generations.

The initiative means a great deal to Her Majesty.

Harry met members of the First Australian community.

During a speech Harry said: “It is up to us now to protect this paradise together – not just because it looks beautiful – but because it is an essential part of our existence, and will continue to be for our children and their children’s children.”

As Harry prepared to start his speech, a woman in the crowd called out “He’s better looking in person!” Harry smiled and said, “I’ll take that as a compliment, thank you.” Rebecca English posted a photo of the lady noting “She was such a character”.

The button up 100% viscose dress features a pointed collar, cinched waistline and a waist tie. It appears the piece has been sold out for some time. I know many of you have been looking forward to seeing a splash of colour in Meghan’s tour wardrobe. This was a lovely choice for the arrival. It very much feels like a glimpse into Meghan’s “personal wardrobe”.

7 News reports: “A lot of people are applauding her use of the colour maroon, maybe it’s her nod to Queensland.” The Queensland rugby league team represents the Australian state of Queensland in rugby league football. Nicknamed the “Maroons”, after the colour of their jersey.

Meghan wore her Sarah Flint Grear sandals.

One of Adelaide’s favourite sons – AFL star Brad Ebert – has launched the iD Intranet SuperFoiler ahead of the season opening regatta this weekend at Outter Harbour. The hard-running midfielder, who averaged 25 touches a game last season, was joined by Jack Trengove, Dan Houston and Jarrod Lienert to unveil iD Intranet at the Royal Adelaide Yacht Squadron.

“It was an unbelievable experience, you really feel like you are flying” said the member of Port Adelaide Power’s Leadership Group who will celebrate ten years in the AFL in 2018, “The speed on this thing, I’ve never really experienced anything like that before.”

The Power’s pre-season is well underway but the AFL stars weren’t going to pass up the chance to ride the fastest boat in the Southern Hemisphere. Jack Trengove and Brad Ebert sharing some insights into their sporting world, while clinging on for a white-knuckle ride. “The Port Power boys are phenomenal athletes, very much at the top of their game. The Wayne Rooney’s of their sport,” said British-born skipper Paul Campbell James.

“iD hovers two metres above the water and I’ve learned some of these guys can leap nearly that high to take a mark so we have enormous respect for what they can do,” said iD Intranet’s helmsman, “It was also nice to discover they appreciated the skill and fearlessness we have in piloting these cutting-edge machines and it was even sweeter we got them back in one piece – more or less.”

An America’s Cup campaigner, Campbell-James is joined by Jasper ‘Fang’ Warren and Ed Powys for the summer long circuit aboard iD Intranet which makes its world premiere this weekend in South Australia. “To have Port Adelaide’s finest at our launch pad was incredibly valuable. They provided our athletes with astounding insights. From dealing with pressure to playing for your team’s jersey and celebrating the moment,” said SuperFoiler COO Jack Macartney, “They know how important it is to reward their supporters with committed performances every week on the road, and we are looking to emulate that level of passion and dedication from our very first race.”

“We are thrilled to be involved in this ground breaking new concept that is set to take the world by storm,” said iD CEO Stewart Bairstow, “Our association with SuperFoiler was a natural one, given our shared passion and track record for pushing the boundaries with innovative, state of the art technology.”

Racing starts this Friday with a twilight regatta on Adelaide’s Outer Harbor. A livestream on OVO from the Royal South Australia Yacht Squadron – SuperFoiler’s first stop of a five-regatta tour – will commence Saturday at 1pm and Sunday at 2pm. The SuperFoiler Grand Prix is staging five regattas across Australia starting with Adelaide in February before the Grand Final on Sydney Harbour commences on March 23 – coinciding with first bounce in the AFL season.

Hong Kong at dusk

Saturday 9 March and Sunday 10 March

After our two ports of call in Japan we are on our way now to Hong Kong. We were here 4 years ago on route to Australia and a few weeks there before another cruise back to Southampton (the other way round) so are familiar with it.

However, sailing 35 miles from the China coast and 65 from the Taiwan coast was something we hadn’t done before. Interesting as the two countries are not exactly on friendly terms. Weather was somewhat overcast so let’s hope it is better in Hong Kong on Monday.

Monday 11 March

Hong Kong: bustling city. Moored in city centre with our window on the world being to Hong Kong Island watching Star Ferries cross at regular intervals. A fantastic mooring spot and we set out to explore and get e-mails / internet which have been lacking really since Sydney.

Our day, however is ruined because of an e-mail sent by our son-in-law, Ali and with an 8 hour difference we can’t ring Sarah now as it is 2am in the morning their time!

Hong Kong’s Star Ferries

We catch Star Ferry to HK Island and just walk to shopping centre that has the Apple store and find a Starbucks for a full catch up on internet and our first decent cup of coffee since leaving Australia.

Walk and catch ferry back to ship, I go out later and Sal rests, still has the flu type bug.

Speak to Sarah, didn’t sound too bad but furious with Ali who wants half of the house – he put nothing into it – and half access to Harry – he never wants to get involved with Harry, so not sure how that is going to work. By the sounds of it he hasn’t told his parents either!

Also managed to speak to Flic and Mel ( who is getting better, still a bit sore from her op ) but missed the laser show. The night lights on the Hong Kong Island buildings were quite spectacular though.

Still in Hong Kong and today we opt for a bus tour to Aberdeen, although it might have been better to check bus times first as we waited a long time at bus stop. Bus drivers don’t give change we found out.

Long ride over to Aberdeen, up the hills and down the other side, past blocks and blocks of accommodation and get off near the start of the sampan rides.

The sampan ride costs HK$60 each, lasted about 20 minutes, had no safety briefing, nearly hit another one at speed round a corner but did see lots of fabulous vessels and some not so fabulous ones.

Catch the bus back to where we started, or so we thought, but we ended up at the bus station which is about a mile from the ship and we were all flagging by now, not sure how Sally managed it, still suffering with the bug.

A good Saxophonist tonight, and a great sail away from Hong Kong passing hundreds and hundreds of high rise blocks all the way out on our Eastwards passage from the city.

I am not sure I would go back to Hong Kong again, certainly if any future trip to Australia or New Zealand involved a stop there then so be it but out of choice I would rather not.

The postcard we sent to Harry never arrived.

I will certainly miss the view from our balcony but onwards we go, to Vietnam and Singapore.
