Speech Debelle - Wayward (Official Video)
The Mercury Prize-winning British rapper Speech Debelle reveals new single ‘Wayward’, a smooth alternative hip-hop joint, combining her signature blend of soul and Ancestral Rap, released on 11 May.
Speech Debelle’s new album ‘Sunday Dinner on a Monday’ will be released on 9 June 2023.
Of the new single, Speech says: "It has two meanings: the shadow self and the masculine-feminine energy. I wanted to wear a suit to show myself in my masculine energy, learning and leaning into the feminine in me, played by dancer, Rónké Olágúnjú."
Music video director Aiden Harmitt-Williams commented
"Immediately upon having the idea for the song, I wanted us to shoot it in one take-style, having it flow and ebb as the song does."
Celebrated for her ability to articulate a vulnerable honesty in contrast to her husky tones, Speech gives some hints on what to expect from her highly-anticipated fourth album, and, unsurprisingly, the self-confessed food-lover (a semi-finalist on Celebrity Masterchef, cookbook writer, and podcaster) has been influenced by the connection, comfort and culture that food allows us to explore. The South London lyricist says of the title: “On a Monday, the Sunday dinner just tastes sweeter; everything has time to marinate and settle."

Frank Ocean comes out; ‘Imagine being thrown from a cliff’

Frank Ocean comes out; ‘Imagine being thrown from a cliff’
http://twitter.com/#!/speechdebelle/status/220451059817119744
Singer/songwriter Frank Ocean has apparently come out of the closet via a poignant post to his Tumblr account.
In a lengthy block of plain text simply entitled “thank you’s,” Ocean reminisces about a summer four years ago spent with a man: “By the time I realized I was in love, it was malignant. It was hopeless. There was no escaping, no negotiating with the feeling.”
Although the Tumblr post was made today, within the text Ocean mentions that he’s writing on December 27, 2011. A previous post seems to indicate the piece was written to be included in the liner notes to upcoming album “Channel Orange,” but rumors inspired him to post the piece.

BASEDGOD WAS RIGHT. we’re all a bunch of golden million dollar babies. my hope is that the babies born these days will inherit less of the bullshit than we did. anyhow, what i’m about to post is for anyone who cares to read. it was intended to fill the thank you’s section in my album credits, but with all the rumors going round.. i figured it’d be good to clarify…
Aside from being a solo artist, Ocean is associated with hip hop collective Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All (OFWGKTA). Odd Future rapper Tyler, the Creator made waves in the Twitterverse last year by starting a beef with openly gay sister duo Tegan and Sara. Tyler responded to Tegan and Sara’s criticisms of his lyrics as homophobic by tweeting, “If Tegan And Sara Need Some Hard Dick, Hit Me Up!”

Syd the Kyd, Odd Future’s sole female member, is an out lesbian.
Whatever sides were taken in that beef, Twitter seems to be supportive of Ocean’s post.
I only started listening to Frank Ocean about a month ago so I'm no super-fan, but this letter gave me full on chills: http://t.co/2bW0GPME

if anything, your appreciation and admiration for @frank_ocean should have risen with these words he left us this morning. #inspiration

I want to wake up with the hope that all of hip-hop embrace Frank Ocean for his honesty and vulnerability. Epic show of bravery and courage.

i can see being like "frank ocean is not for me" but dude is too pure to hate. it's like hating a child or butterfly or child butterfly.

Speech Debelle - Come Your Way
Off the back of recent singles '101010', ‘Atlantis’ and ‘Away From Here’, the Mercury Prize-winning British rapper Speech Debelle reveals new single ‘Come Your Way’, a smooth and soulful slice of alternative hip-hop and Ancestral Rap, released on 7 April.
Alongside the single, Speech Debelle reveals her new album ‘Sunday Dinner on a Monday’ which will be released on 9 June 2023.
Of the new single, Speech says: "Come Your Way is about love and forgiveness, which I’m still learning. I’m also trying with myself and believe it can be a revolutionary act."
Featuring the singles ‘Come Your Way’, ‘101010’, ‘Atlantis’ and ‘Away from Here’, ‘Sunday Dinner On A Monday’ examines family, friends, lineage, and ancestral DNA through the lens of afro-futurism.

Strength and Vulnerability Bunker
Speech Debelle has curated the latest Koestler Trust exhibition, showing for free in the Royal Festival Hall until the first of December. The only thing that unites the creations on display is the theme of 'Strength and Vulnerability' that Debelle chose. That and the fact that every piece of art was made by someone in captivity; prisoners, patients in secure psychiatric facilities, immigration detainees and offenders on community sentences.
Walked in and was greeted by a really calm and personable guy. He gave us brochures and seemed eager to interact with everyone visiting the bunker. The first thing to see is a pirate ship made of cardboard, and then on to masks, then the some of the most affecting portraits I have seen in a long time, then songs, visual pieces, poetry, crafts. Certain themes begin to emerge, and Debelle has curated the exhibit well, choosing pieces chiefly for their ability to emote.
The pieces seek forgiveness, and display isolation, confinement, escapism or boredom. Crafts and sculpture are made from things as obscure and magpie-like as chicken bones, bread, matchsticks or soap. A tiny birdbox window reveals a cramped prison cell inside instead of birds or seed. A shoebox diorama reveals a miniature crack den, complete with tiny Trainspotting poster and overflowing ashtrays. More conventional pieces show amazing patience and attention to detail.
I cannot think of a better way to remind the general public that not everyone who goes to prison is a violent, anti-social person, incapable of reform or reflection. The lovely guy who was at hand when we entered the gallery also revealed himself to be an ex-offender. In fact eight ex-offenders will be working to help run the bunker for the duration of this project. This young guy had been sentenced to 2 years for intention to graffiti TFL property; interesting how one kind of art can lead to another.
