For your hypothetical moral questions.
For A, I would take the knife of the other dude if they’re not awake yet. Thus they can’t escape. If they are awake, I will tell them that I’m going to get help because I am already unbound and ask to take their knife with me. The puzzle description never says that they know the rules of the puzzle. If they refuse to give up the knife, I explain the puzzle and say that I have a plan that will get them out later. If they still don’t like me at this point they’ve probably already cut themselves free, stabbed me and escaped.
For B, It depends on two factors:
1. Is the person from earth/familiar with international signs/gestures?
2. Is the memo that explains the rules on a physical piece of paper or thing I can point to?
If they are from earth and I can hold or point to the memo, I would point to my memo, and then point to theirs. I would repeat several times to make the point that we have the same memo. Then, I would make a peace sign with my hand while dropping the knife. The peace sign would signify no violence from my end. Hopefully they are smart enough to do the same, and we go free.
If they are not from earth but there is a physical piece of paper, I would point to their paper and then mine so that they get that they say the same thing. Then I will flop over pathetically and throw away the knife to signify a lack of aggression. If they toss their knife too, we go free.
If they know the peace sign and there is no physical memo, I would point to me, do the peace sign, point to them, do the peace sign, repeat as I slowly put the knife down and kick it away. I repeat until I peer pressure them into mimicking me. Freedom.
If they don’t know earth culture, and there is no physical memo, I would slowly set down the knife, kick it away, and then sit down as casually as possible. Slow blink at ‘em like a cat. Hopefully they get the idea?
I love these answers, thank you so much! I think you're the first person to make the same choices as the character in the fic <3

Being in the gravity falls fandom rn is realizing I’m the only person in the world who enjoyed reading the Great Gatsby in school.
The prose is so much fun? Fitzgerald just casually makes up his own phrases for expressive clarity and it’s so good.
The main annoyance for most people (best part for me) is how obnoxiously formal the pov guy is for the whole book. Part of the joy of the book is how he describes “not so polite” situations without losing his formality.
Examples:
“…beside her stood a tall, red haired young lady from a famous chorus, engaged in songs. She had drunk a quantity of champagne and during the course of her song she had decided ineptly that everything was very very sad-…” pg. 56
Translation: Singer got smashed and started bawling suddenly.
“She looked at me and laughed pointlessly. Then she flounced over to the dog, kissed it with ecstasy and swept into the kitchen, implying that a dozen chefs awaited her orders there.” pg. 36
Translation: no translation needed this lady is drunk but also based about this dog.
“…and carefully on guard against its spectroscopic gayety.” pg. 49
Translation: Spectroscopic gayety is a term he made up to describe a party created by the generationally wealthy to be so obnoxious and fun that it insults the new rich.
The whole book is written like this and it’s just a blast to read. The symbolism is really good too, but despite what your English teacher says, you don’t need to understand the symbolism to enjoy the plot.

Instead of rambling this party had preserved a dignified homogeneity, and assumed to itself the function of representing the staid nobility of the countryside—East Egg condescending to West Egg, and carefully on guard against its spectroscopic gayety.
The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, page 44
spectroscope:
an optical device for producing and observing a spectrum of light or radiation from any source, consisting essentially of a slit through which the radiation passes, a collimating lens, and an Amici prism.

West and East Egg
“I lived at West Egg, the — well, the less fashionable of the two, though this is a most superficial tag to express the bizarre and not a little sinister contrast between them.” (Fitzgerald 7)
“Instead of rambling, this party had preserved a dignified homogeneity, and assumed to itself the function of representing the staid nobility of the country-side — East Egg condescending to West Egg, and carefully on guard against its spectroscopic gayety.” (Fitzgerald 36).
West Egg and East Egg are situated between New York and Long Island and overlooked the Long Island Sound. In The Great Gatsby West Egg is where the newly rich such as Gatsby resided. The East Egg is where old money, such as Tom and Daisy, resided and both were able to see each other over what is the Manhasset Bay.
This is based on an actual places called Great Neck and Port Washington peninsulas on Long Island. In the 1920s Fitzgerald lived in Great Neck in a house similar to Nick’s. Fitzgerald was well acquainted with the rich and famous of the area and like Nick and in the process of writing the first three chapters of The Great Gatsby attended many parties in the area. It’s likely that he modeled West Egg and East Egg after Great Neck and Port Washington based on the wealth of the area and the houses of his neighbors.
