The PNF-404 Phylogenetic Tree
A bit of a different post from the usual, as I have been very hyped for Pikmin 4! Here's my speculative phylogenetic tree for most of the creatures in the Pikmin series. It is a bit more cautious than an actual phylogenetic tree, so there are a lot of soft polytomies (ideally every branch split should only have two children), but I digress.
Edit
It seems that Tumblr's compression did some nasty work on my post, so I'm gonna leave here a link to my phylogenetic tree in case anyone would like to see it in its full glory.
Here are also all the notes on the image in case anyone needs those too:
Author's Notes
Updated as of the Pikmin 4 Demo.
Icons taken from the Pikipedia and Pikmin games.
Fonts used are “Pikmin Font” by TheAdorableOshawott and “Dimbo” by Jayvee Enaguas.
Species with multiple scientific names
The Red Bulborb, Empress Bulblax and Bulborb Larvae are all explicitly different forms of the same species, as is the case in their Japanese technical name.
The Spotty Bulbear and Dwarf Bulbear are both explicitly different forms of the same species, as is the case in their Japanese technical name.
The Baldy Long Legs and Hairy Long Legs are explicitly stated to be the same species.
The Centipare and adult Centipare have completely different scientific name and family.
Incorrect scientific name (according to Japanese family name)
Despite being in the Breadbug family, the Fiery Dwarf Bulblax, has the Oculus genus instead of Pansarus. This is corrected here.
Despite not being in the Blowhog family, the Tusked Blowhog shares its Sus genus.
Despite not being in the Mandiblards family, the Shooting Spiner shares its Himeagea genus.
Despite not being in the Flint Beetle family, the Glint Beetle shares its Pilli genus.
The Floaterbie family is supposed to be the same family as the Flutterbie family in the original Japanese.
The Crysanthemum family is considered the same as the Dandelion family in the original Japanese.
Changes due to assumed consistency
All Wollyhop names have been updated to match the Wolpole's European name, which was standardized in Pikmin 4.
Similarly, All mentions of the “frodendum" specific name have been updated to match Wolpole's frondiferorum name in Pikmin 4.
The Red Spectralid has a different genus (Fenestrati) than every other Spectralid. This is likely a mistake is corrected here.
Despite not all Candypop Buds being present in the Pikmin 4 Demo, it is assumed they are all now considered the same species in the Piklopedia.
Scientific name in the wrong order
The Fiery Young Yellow Wollyhop has its “volcanus" subspecies name incorrectly placed in front of its scientific name. This is corrected here.
The Queen Shearwig, Speargrub and Sheargrub all have their genus incorrectly placed as their specific name. This is corrected here.
Incorrect use of real taxonomy terms
The genus Chilopoda of the Centipare is actually the real world class of the centipedes.
The genus Stauromedusae of the Medusal Slurker is actually a real world order of cnidarians.
The specific name phytohabitans of the Leech Hydroe is actually a real world genus of bacteria.
The genus of the Common Glowcap is actually the real world kingdom of fungi.
Inconsistencies within English localizations
The Coppeler has the Scarpanica genus added in the American localization.
The Armurk has different scientific names: Tegoparastacoidea reptantia (US) and Scalobita rotunda (EU).
Other Notes
The Caustic Dweevil was renamed to Hydro Dweevil and its scientific name to Mandarachnia aquadis in the Switch port of Pikmin 2.
Although the Puffstool has no confirmed family, it shares a genus with the Puffstalk, implying they are likely related.
Missing creatures: Mamuta, Smoky Progg, Blubbug, Puffy Blubbug, Electric Cottonade, Red Blubblimp, Seedbagger, Stuffed Bellbloom.
Unplaceable creatures (extradimensional and/or possibly entirely artificial life forms): Waterwraith, Plasm Wraith.

The Dwarf Withered Blowhog spends its childhood on the ground, waddling the surface with vestigial legs it loses in adulthood. It hungrily scours for the petals of flowers, and the wings of spectralids, and sucks them all up! If threatened, it bursts away in a cloud of gas!

they can choke and die instantly btw

Fanmade pikmin biome idea
so I'm bored and decided to make my own pikmin area with my own oc enemies!
Mystery mud flats.
The terrain is muddy, and full of watery areas. With lots of craters and roots sticking out of the ground.
Native pikmin: blue an winged.
Enemies
Painted spectralid: this member of the flutterbie family has no natural predators due to its poisonous nature, they don't attack.
elephant amprat: this member of the numbouse family is much less hairy than its bearded relatives. They possess prehensile tails for climbing tree roots, and impeccable noses from sucking food towards them, they will try to eat pikmin.
Compressed aristocrab: this memeber of the onionshell family is much smaller and flatter than its relatives, it burys itself in the mud with only its eyes and headspike (which resembles a tree root.) Sticking out. They use they're claws the snap up an unsuspecting pikmin.
Mudskipping blinnow: this member of the elips family is much more amphibious than the puckering blinnow, they hop and skip along the mud flats, eating anything they can catch, that includes pikmin.
Sidewinding meerslug: this memeber of the meerslug family is much smaller and mire serpentine than its sandbelching cousin. It sidewinds across the mud flats to hunt for blinnows at night. During the day, they hide in their burrows, ready to spit mud at. Any intruders. They don't eat pikmin, but will spit mud at them if they feel threatened.
Spewwig: this member of the mandiblard family climbs on the roots to suck out nutrients. They spew a poisonous fluid when they get scared. They don't eat pikmin, bht they will spray them if they feel scared.
Web-toed snagret: this member of the snavian family hops around the mud flats with its one webbed foot. It uses its beak to snatch up prey like pikmin and meerslugs.
Crocosaur rumpup: this member of the armrakid family is the boss of this area. It is a much bigger, meaner, and less hairy cousin of the crusted rumpup. It prowls the mud flats for anything that can't get away, like pikmin. Its only weak spots are its eyes and underbelly.

[Day 7 - Gildemandwee] Yippee! One full week into Piktober! And with such adorable little guys (and their not-so-little parent)! I like their design, although I wish the adult Gildemander was a tougher opponent. It just kind of... sits there, not doing much. Nevertheless, I do like them a lot!

RATING EVERY THING I'VE SEEN DAY THIRTY THREE: UNMARKED SPECTRALIDS
Tumblr media
VERY PRETTY! BUT THEY'RE JUST FREE FOOD FOR THE PIKMIN. THEY EVEN GIVE THEM NECTAR SOMETIMES! SOMETIMES IT'S THIS WEIRD COLORED NECTAR THAT I DON'T KNOW WHAT IT DOES BUT IT'S PROBABLY HELPFUL TO THE PIKMIN SO I DON'T LIKE IT!

Hello Pikmin fanbase! It is I, and I come bearing an OC! This is the Chaos Wraith, my concept for a sort of post-Plasm Wraith…wraith. Unlike its less malevolent and more curious cousin, this creature is not exactly something you wanna find in the back of your yard, its ability to produce gloom at-will notwithstanding. It patrols its territory and acts on a ravenous appetite towards anything that gets close, smothering it in gloom and consuming the remains. It does, however, seem to hold a significant amount of intelligence, having been observed to make complex decisions regarding other creatures and holds very strong opinions on things, especially regarding those little captain guys that its progenitor seems insistent on crashing to the surface, and those walking vegetables they use. It also seems to produce a passive aura around its territory that drives any creatures within to madness, causing them to lose all behavior and act with incredible aggression, even to normally passive creatures like spectralids, it has been observed that they do behave similarly to when night falls and it has been posited that these might be related. In any case, the creature and its territory are extremely dangerous and should only be approached in certain circumstances.
