Day 84: “support network”

Scooter got her Gen2 orthotics off today. When I put them on she had toes that were so badly curled that she had little talons. She also could not stand up on her hocks with all her weight for longer than a split second. What a difference a couple of days and some good support makes! Not only is Scooter up and running around on her legs, but her toes are nice and straight, flat, and spread out like proper chicken feet. She's not out of the woods yet, but this is an amount of progress I did not think possible in such a short time. The key to getting here was actually super gluing pennies to the bottoms of her shoes. The weight of the pennies gave her enough ballast to pop her up and onto her hocks without tipping over, and strengthened her thigh muscles. She has another 18 hours or so to go before I reassess her progress again and make sure the restructuring is going to stick, but this is very good. Kanye (chocolate orpington chick) has been very supportive.

Meet our newest arrival! Her name is Autumn! She is a sebright bantam and about 4-5 months old, she is living inside with us as she is disabled! Her special need is that her one leg is backwards and upside down combined with possible curled toes, I like to call it "Italian hand" as it looks like she's doing this 🤌

She's a very sweet girl, though she's very timid/shy! She enjoys dust bathing on a fuzzy blanket and eating treats that are broken into bite size pieces! She also likes stuffed animals and towels!

We have only had her about 2 weeks so far but she has already become an important member of our family, though Criss hasn't fully accepted her just yet!

Our little Dinky #leghorn was starting to slow down again. Her teenage siblings look out for her outside, but the big girls tend to run her over. We brought her inside to keep Gimpy company and get a little extra TLC. She can fly a little bit, so I found her on the sofa today cuddling with my purse. #specialneedschicken

Poor Gimpy wasn't feeling good this morning. All the babies were walking on top of her and she wasn't even moving. I gave her a good epsom soak, dried her off, wrapped her in a towel and tucked her under a blanket. #LuckyDog cuddled up to her and they took a nap together. I'm not sure what's wrong with Gimpy - she was up and actually standing on her good leg a couple of days ago - something she hadn't been able to do in weeks since she grew so much. #specialneedschicken #isbar #isbarchicken #weeniedog

So since I was feeling a bit better tonight (migraine) and feeling guilty for not doing leg therapy with Gimpy for a few days, she had a hydrotherapy spa session tonight. Now she's got a clean rear end and is snoozing in my lap. #isbarchicken #petchicken #specialneedschicken
