[Dating Hoshina Headcanons]

Absolutely no one asked but this is how I imagine dating Hoshina would look like:

This post is based on my personal research and officially published information about Hoshina up to Chapter 110. Please read this with a giant grain of salt.

If he has a half day off:

Casual coffee dates, talk about anything and everything.

Walk in the park while he’s still wearing his tracksuit so he can respond quickly to Kaiju’s attacks.

Takes you to all the bookstores or libraries, buy books for each other then go home and read each other’s book.

Late night Izakaya date when his shift is finished. Both grab a beer and you’ll listen to him telling you about how his day went, including all the drama at work of course lol.

Spend a lot of quality time together reading, discussing a book he has recommended (probably non-fiction or classics).

I also love the idea that he likes to take you to every Japanese Festival like the Kyoto Gion Matsuri (Kyoto is in the Kansai region; he’s from a traditional old-money clan in the Kansai region, so this festival is a must), but he’d probably be on duty those days for extra vigilance in case there’s an attack. Despite so, he’s gonna make it up to you later on bc this man does have a sense of loyalty and he cares a whole lot once you make it to his heart and earn his trust.

Another headcanon of mine is that he‘s lowkey romantic. Like c’mon, he reads poetry lmao. I’ve never seen someone who reads poetry that doesn’t have a romantic side. If he’s off duty, he’d plan a proper date, such as:

Watches the Blossom Forecast to plan for a Hanami picnic (花見, hanami, "flower viewing") when Spring comes. He’ll bring sweets like Dango, Daifuku, and his favorite Mont Blanc.

Takes you to those kimono retailers, makes you try on different types of kimono, and buy the one you like most.

He’d take you to the beach, or onsen on some mountains. He’d ask you to go on a hike with him in the early morning bc that’s his routine and he wants you to join him as well.

He’ll prepare a yukata for both to attend summer festivals, buy sparklers (線香花火, senkou hanabi), play goldfish scooping (金魚すくい, kingyo sukui), eat candied apples and watch fireworks together.

Chilling in his house, drinking ramune and eating watermelon. You watch your favorite show, he reads his newly bought novel. Either you both cook and prepare dinner, or head out to a rather fancy traditional restaurant.

Today I officially finished ぼくのなつやすみ２.

Absolutely gorgeous game. It really encapsulates what summer vacation feels like as a kid, complete with the freedom and aimlessness and melancholy. I can't recommend it enough.

In terms of Japanese learning, it's an excellent game to learn from - every line of dialogue is fully voice acted with subtitles on the side, and since you're playing as a child the conversations are generally simple. Also, since there's narrative arcs that hint at deeper things that a child might not understand, you still get a sense of complexity.

Since the game takes place in August and is separated by each day, I played "alongside" the protagonist all month, playing one day in-game for each of my real-life days. Hence, why I finished today on the last day of August. IMO this is such a good way to play the game since it feels less repetitive and more like you're checking in with the protagonist's adventures every day.

Anyway here's some random vocab words I picked up while playing:

The sliding door to the balcony had been left open, allowing a warm salty breeze to roll in. The early morning sun crept in through the curtains, casting a gentle glow on the room. A ray of sunlight that snuck through the gap in the curtains landed directly on my boyfriend's face, illuminating his features.

The glow made Jack’s tan skin look even more so, accentuating the blonde highlights in his hair and the freckles across his cheeks. His chest rose and fell with every steady breath. He looked angelic lying next to me.

We had been in Hawaii now for a couple of days and planned it so Jack's birthday would fall right in the middle of our trip. What Jack didn’t know was that I had planned a day full of things that he’d been wanting to do our whole trip.

The clock on the nightstand read just past 8. I slipped out of bed, putting on Jack’s discarded t-shirt from last night’s early birthday celebration. I grabbed the phone off the nightstand, dialling room service while walking to the balcony. The cord just allows me to step out there to take the call so I don’t wake Jack.

I order us some breakfast and coffee, stepping back into our room where Jack is still soundly sleeping in bed. I crawl back into bed, lying next to him, gently running my hands over his bare chest. He stirs but doesn’t fully wake, so I lean in and press soft kisses to his neck. I look up at his face, a small smile tugging on his lips.

I continue the kisses, trailing up his jawline and onto his cheek. His smile grows and eventually, he opens his eyes. “Good morning.” I say softly.

“Morning.” He says in his raspy morning voice.

“Happy birthday.” I say.

He smiles, leaning over and pecking me on the lips. “Thank you, my love.” He smiles.

There’s a knock on the door, making Jack’s brows furrow. I get up, answering the door to a bellboy with our breakfast on a cart. I thank him, giving him a small tip and rolling the cart in.

“What did you do?” Jack asks, propped up on his elbow.

“I got us breakfast. It’s your birthday so I’m treating you.” I grab our plates, both with an omelette with some berries on the side. “I was thinking we can go hiking to see one of the waterfalls, then I know you wanted to go snorkelling so we’re gonna do that in the afternoon.”

“Wait I thought they were all booked?” He asked.

“I lied.” I smiled.

“Hell yeah.” Jack chuckled. Snorkelling was something he had been talking about doing ever since we planned this trip. However I lied to him telling him all the snorkelling trips were booked up, even though I had secretly booked us one for today.

“And then, I was thinking a round of golf?” I offer. “I packed that Lululemon skirt, y’know the white one?”

This makes Jack look up from his omelette at me, swallowing the piece in his mouth. “The short one?”

“Mhm.” I nod.

Jack groans, taking another bite of his breakfast.

A little while later we get ready for our day, which starts with the hike, then our snorkelling, followed by 9 holes of golf in which I got dominated. We came back to the room to get changed for dinner, taking a nice long shower together. Jack had on a loose white dress shirt with some jeans. He purposefully left the top couple of buttons undone, exposing the slightly burnt chest he had earned on our hike.

Dinner passed, as well as dessert where the restaurant staff brought out their signature dessert with sparklers stuck in, singing happy birthday to Jack, slightly embarrassing him. The blush on his cheeks made his already sunkissed skin look burnt.

Right at the end of dinner, the sun began to set so we made our way down to the beach to watch the sunset. We stood right before the water, our shoes discarded up the beach to let the water run over our bare feet. Jack stood behind me with his arms wrapped around my torso.

“Thank you for today, baby.” He says, pressing a kiss to the top of my head.

“Anything for my birthday boy.” I reply. “Was today good?”

“It was amazing.” He says. Jack places his hands on my hips, spinning me around to face him, a smirk tugging on his lips. “I have another activity that could close out the birthday festivities with a bang?”

Jack and I grab our shoes, heading in the direction of our hotel. The pair of us are giggling like idiots, running up the beach hand in hand.

it was a serene night on the beach — a night like any other, in a secret hideout.

“lord elbert.”

you stopped in your tracks, turning back to look into those eyes as deep blue as the ocean whose shore you two were strolling aimlessly upon. even in the darkness of the night, illuminated only by the full moon and the dimly flickering stars, you felt you can make out those colors with clarity, especially as his eyes widened slightly.

“i want to share another secret with you, here in our secret place. that’s why i brought these.”

holding out a bag with a beaming smile, you used your other hand to take out what appeared to be two sticks.

one for you, and one for him. two sticks — just for the two of you.

“are they just sticks?” lord elbert’s voice was soft, but you could glean a quality of curiosity. “what… do we do with them?”

his movements were a tad awkward and stiff as you handed him one of the sticks.

“of course, we’re going to light them.”

“…?”

you used a lighter to light a spark on the wire end of the stick, causing the flame to spark outward with a crackling noise that almost seemed like applause. after you readjusted your grip, you lit lord elbert’s stick.

he stared at it with an unchanging expression, but you could tell he was focused on it from the way the flames so clearly reflected in those glass-like blue eyes.

“is this beautiful?” he finally asked following a bout of silence.

“to me? yes, it’s very beautiful.” your lips tugged into a small smile. “both when it’s alight, and when the flame goes out.”

“when the flame goes out?”

“i mean, things are beautiful because they fade away. when you leave behind the used stick, it is proof that someone was here, using them. and i think that’s beautiful.”

lord elbert closed his eyes, as if deep in thought. in the end, his only reply was a small “i see.”

then, after sparing the sparkling flame one last glance, he threw the stick into the ocean, watching as the waves that approached the shore rhythmically swallowed up the flame.

just as you had said, the only thing that remained after the flame extinguished was a stick that can no longer be used, not by him — but not by anyone else either.

“wh—hey! why have it go out so soon?” your voice was a little dejected, though you didn’t feel all that mad either.

lord elbert didn't reply, but the silence with him was comfortable.

and just as you found comfort in his quiet, slightly melancholic nature, elbert couldn’t help but find a similar comfort that the sparkler, which had originally came from your hands, was used by no one other than himself.

it was a strange source of comfort, yet it brought a small, perhaps fleeting smile to his lips.

all good things come to an end and your relationship with rui was never an exception. not the image of your hair blowing in the wind, nor your bare feet running on the sand as you chased waves. neither was your mellifluous laughter or the twinkle in your eye an exception.

rui can still remember your relationship with him like a bitter aftertaste on the back of his throat. he had always loved sparklers on summer nights, yet your light was like fireworks that went off too soon. you lit up his summer nights along with the calming crackle of fire by the beach and the lapping waves on the sand. the wind caressed him like a cool embrace while your adoring eyes warmed him and set his heart aflame.

yet even the tallest of trees have their leaves wither and fall just as the mightiest mountains crumble back into the sea. waves reach out only to ultimately crash back into the ocean, where it originally belonged. if this was the case, why can't rui go back to that time with you?

like that weekend where he drove out of town, his hand on your thigh and your hand over his. he remembers the way you held his hand to interlock your fingers with his, your hand holding his in a perfect fit like puzzle pieces. He held you, his hand in yours as the scenery changed from urban buildings to an expansive landscape of grass and trees, with only the moon as the witness to what you two shared. he held you until your eyes started to flutter close and your breathing evened into shallow breaths, your face content in a deep slumber while the whirring engine of the car enveloped the air.

that summer night— out of all the flings and girlfriends he had, you were the only one he was certain he got right. he was certain that you and that damned summer night was the only place he'd rather be at.

"rui..?" he stood frozen in his tracks despite the warmth your voice brought. he flinched and shuddered as he recognized the owner of that voice– you.

you who was more than he ever deserved, you who showered him with warmth and affection, and you who he thought he loved. he was certain that he did love you, but that love wasn't enough. you gave him all your love yet he only reciprocated your affection with nonchalance and flirty remarks. perhaps it wasn't clear- you wanted someone to love and he wanted a summer fling.

"oh, hey, haha... long time no see, right?" rui would awkwardly chuckle to try and hide the revolt in his stomach and the hammering in his chest.

the smell of your perfume- it was as soothing as it was before. it made him feel, and remember what it was like to be loved. it reminded him of the feeling of your embrace, the feeling of your hair in his hands as he brushed it behind your ear to place a kiss on your cheek. it reminds him of the time when he was still free from his curse.

"yeah." you'd agree with an awkward chuckle of your own, "how are you?" you'd ask him, the small talk you initiated feeling like nails on a chalkboard with how painfully estranged it was.

"i've been good!" rui would cheer, snapping back to his usual act of being the carefree and easygoing playboy, "haha~ don't tell me you've been thinking lots about me~" rui would add as a tease.

ironic of him to say when he's the one hung up on you, reminiscing of your time together on the daily. he didn't know if you had some kind of electric pull on him or if he's just hung up because you were the last fling he was in physical contact with- alas, he missed you all the same. whether it be actual love, or infatuation.

"i see you haven't changed." you'd answer with a shake of your head, a smile on your lips. rui would feel his heart jump, realizing that the smile you donned was because of him. he's the reason for your smile now.

"maybe i did?" rui suggests cheekily with a wink, "do you want to catch up and see for yourself?" he offers. though appearing confident, inside he was shaking and even praying for you to say yes.

surely, this time he'd be able to give back the love that you deserve. surely, this time he'd be able to love you.

"ah, sorry. i'm having lunch with my boyfriend. i only picked some stuff up here for our dog." you'd apologize to rui, declining his offer. he couldn't be mad at you, no, you were just being nice to him.

wait... did you just say boyfriend?

"you have a boyfriend?" rui asks, surprised when you nodded and told him you have.

"ah, i see, i'm sorry..." rui apologizes. "please don't let me keep you. have fun with your date!" he exclaims, acting like everything was fine.

even before you could bid him farewell, rui was off to leave, not even shooting another glance back at you. no, he must leave right at this instant or else you'll see him crumble. you'll see his crestfallen expression, you'll hear his heart break, and you'll feel him being torn into pieces.
