Prague’s Spanish Synagogue is a wonder for the eyes. Built in 1868 in the Moorish Revival style, it isn’t the largest synagogue in Europe, but it’s definitely one of the most ornate.

My last post for today comes from Prague's Jewish Quarter. Until the 18th century, Prague's Jewish people were confined to a specific part of town, had to wear a badge reflecting their religion, and carried a very heavy tax burden, among other things that branded them as second class citizens. (Not to mention attempts by the church to convert, banning of books printed in Hebrew, exclusion from certain jobs, expulsion, and limiting who could marry). In the mid 18th century, under Emperor Joseph II, some of these burdens were removed, and Jewish people started moving elsewhere. By the late 1800s, most of the Josefov or Jewish Quarter was demolished supposedly due to falling into disrepair and being a health hazard. Today, there are less streets and buildings in the area than when it was the Josefov, and they are filled with very large Neo-Baroque and Neo-Classical architecture which house high end retail. However, some amazing structures and history has been maintained by the Jewish Museum. Including some of the Quarter's synagogues. I took this photo at the Spanish Synagogue, which is certainly the most ornate. It's a beautiful building, heavily influenced by Southern European (or dare I say North African) motifs. The first image is looking upward from the main floor at the gallery where women sat-it was a Reform@Synagogue. The second image is looking down at the bimah from the gallery. And the third image is looking upward from the center of the main floor.
