Simpson, Colorado

This spot is along the original route of the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway between La Junta and Trinidad, Colorado. I imagine that the siding was named for explorer and pioneer George Sibley Simpson, but cannot lock this down.

The twin Spanish Peaks, with an elevation of 13,631 feet, can be seen thirty miles to the west. This distinctive twin-peak feature was an important landmark for people traveling along the Santa Fe Trail prior to the coming of the railway.

The track of the ATSF is straight and flat here as it runs across the Great Plains towards the mountains; it will begin to curve around a bit as it reaches the Purgatory River just east of Trinidad, with the daunting Raton Pass just beyond.

Albert my tabby boy cat is from the streets of Asheville NC. He was a Christmas gift that ended up being my own and he has brought such joy and added adventure to my already adventurous life. We quickly hit the road as I'm a travel nurse. He loved our first month in Sarasota Florida was simply a slice of heaven on earth for us all. I also have my little 10 lb papillon named Chica, she a rescue from a house with 28 cats.

We headed to Walsenburg Colorado where I work taking care of veterans. The vast sky and humongous horizon is new for Albert but I'm taking him out daily to spots where he can run and play and if there is a tree nearby he'll climb up happily. Snow is a new thing that wears him out pretty quickly sending him jumping back into the car from which is the only constant since he left his little cage in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Chica started her adventure with me in 2014 when we headed out for Minocqua Wisconsin to a 100 year old Jewish all boys camp. 160 campers helped the shy scared little soul begin to see life really can change for the good and the sky is the limit. Now she blinks her little bug eyes at Albert as to say stay close my new friend we're going far.
