Seville was the first stop on our trip to Spain and Italy. We stayed right in the downtown core in a lovely boutique hotel that served afternoon tea and a lovely buffet breakfast each morning.Back home, I have walked into so many homes where there is an elaborately ornate staircase design that often looks totally out of place. Now I know where the design was inspired. And it fits right in here. Along with the tile after one of my followers on Instagram noted “There’s no subway tile Maria”.So that’s what inspired this post. Which was easy to write because I took so many photos of all the tile work.I know many of you, who are longtime readers, might fall off your chair or drop your morning coffee but here is where decorative tile has a place:This was a doorway in the reception area of the hotel:Here’s the staircase (below):The first night, we had dinner in a nearby restaurant. I liked the way the muted red encaustic tile related to the bricks on the same wall (below):And it also worked well with the black and white tile floors:This was the backsplash tile in the breakfast room, back in the hotel (below):This was the floor in the Seville Cathedral nearby (below):Then we toured the Real Alcazar of Seville, castle and gardens. Gorgeous tiles everywhere (below):       When does this kind of tile work back home? In context with a Spanish/Mediterranean style home, with an exterior that possibly looks like this:Image sourceAn entry staircase with iron railings ornate or not (below):Centsational StyleWood beamed ceilings, ornate, spanish style pendants, black, arched windows, all belong in a house with this colourful tile (below):image sourceYou could also design a terra cotta floor with a turquoise kitchen (below):Image sourceIn this Spanish kitchen with the beams in the ceiling and curved plaster hood fan, I could even live with the blue backsplash because it’s been repeated in the plates and tile underneath the window.Image sourcePerhaps your styling might look like this with the Spanish style wall sconce as well:Image sourceIn a Spanish style home, your powder room could look like this (below). Notice the arched doorway and perfect light fixture.Image sourceI love this fireplace design (below). So classic and timeless. Again, notice the beams and the arched french doors. The beautiful outdoor fireplace too with the iron gate.image sourceIt’s rare that I think a black leather sofa looks good but here in this more neutral ‘Spanish inspired’ living room, it works. Because there’s not too much black to make it heavy and masculine (below):image sourceWhat I have seen all too often is people will go on a trip to Europe and fall in love with a particular style and when they get home they start adding these random design elements that in no way work with the existing style of their home. That’s where random arches that have no place suddenly appear, or the busy, ornate staircase railing I mentioned at the beginning of this post or random rows of tile on a staircase kick that in no way belongs.Decorative tile has a place. And that place is definitely not as a random strip in your kitchen backsplash or shower surround. At least if you’re going to introduce accent tile, go big or go home, (like the bathroom image above) but don’t just install bits and pieces of it. Decorative tile is like a strong wall colour. If you’ve decided to paint a room red, go for it, don’t just paint it on a single wall, that rarely works.Related post: A New Way to Design Accent Tile: Ceramic ArchitectureHere are a couple more images once we arrived in Barcelona: Here I am sitting outside at dinner in a Tapas restaurant in Seville:The sidewalks in Seville were mostly concrete in a hex shape! Isn’t that incredible? You can see it behind me too in the photo above.Hexagonal concrete tile in SevilleYou’ll notice white walls are big in Spanish design. If this is the stye of your home and you need to choose the right white, download my ebook,  White is Complicated; A Decorators Guide to Choosing the Right White, here. 1. Craftsman (Arts & Crafts)–Gamble House, Pasadena
Originating in England, the Arts and Crafts movement emphasized a unity with nature and prized handmade details over the cheap mass production of the Industrial Revolution. Distinguishing traits of Craftsman bungalows include low- pitched rooflines, gabled or hipped roofs, overhanging eaves, shaded porches, extensive woodwork, double-hung windows, and Batchelder tile fireplaces.
2. French Normandy–Gloria Swanson Residence, Hollywood
Loosely based on the architecture of 16th-century French chateaux in the Loire Valley, the Chateauesque style became trés chic in Los Angeles during the 1920s thanks to its fantasy appeal, aristocratic associations, and last but not least, advances in veneer cladding techniques that approximated the look of expensive masonry construction. Identifying traits include steeply pitched hipped roof lines, spires, pinnacles, turrets, gables, shaped chimneys, dormers, and round or gothic archways.
3. Neoclassical Revival–Hancock Park
Neoclassical architecture is characterized by grandeur of scale, simplicity of geometric forms, Greek or Roman detail, dramatic use of columns, and a preference for blank walls. It is defined by a commanding facade with a full height porch, its roof supported by classical columns. The columns are often fluted and the capitals are usually ornate Ionic or Corinthian.
4. Beaux-Arts–Guasti Mansion, West Adams
Seen in Downtown LA’s temples of finance, commerce, and law, Beaux Arts is a classical style characterized by Greco-Roman elements: columns, arches, vaults, and domes. The buildings were constructed with high quality materials such as limestone, while their interiors were dressed to impress in marble, mahogany, alabaster, terrazzo, bronze, and brass. Exterior embellishments include bas-relief sculptures and glazed terra cotta tiles.
5. Art Deco–Lloyd Wright’s Samuel-Novarro House, The Oaks, Los Feliz
Art Deco reared its lovely head in Los Angeles following the 1925 Exposition des Arts Decoratifs in Paris. Constructed of smooth-finish building materials such as stucco, concrete block, and glazed brick, Deco buildings have a sleek, linear appearance. Other identifying characteristics include a setback facade, reeding or fluting around doors and windows, stepped-tray ceilings, and lavish ornamentation employing ziggerauts, chevrons, and other geometric forms, intense colors, and Egyptian, Native American, and other “exotic” motifs.
6. Romanesque–Stimson House, West Adams
Romanesque architecture is characterized by round arches over windows and/or entryways, with heavy emphasis around the arches; thick, cavernous entryways and window openings; thick masonry walls, rounded (sometimes square) towers with conical roof; facades are typically asymmetrical; variable stone and brick façade. On elaborate examples, polychromatic facades with contrasting building materials. The style emphasizes the Classical Roman arch as its dominant feature.
7. Spanish Colonial Revival–Adamson House, Malibu
Became Southern California’s pre-eminent architectural style in the wake of the Panama-California Exposition of 1915-1917. To house the San Diego exposition, architects Bertram Goodhue and Carleton Winslow designed a campus of buildings that blended elements of Mission Revival, Mexican, Spanish Baroque/Churrigueresque, and Islamic styles. This unique concoction was a resounding hit, and soon homes with low-pitched red tile roofs, courtyards, white stucco walls with rounded corners, painted tile, wrought-iron accents, and arched windows and doorways became a ubiquitous sight.
8. Tudor Revival–Hancock Park
Meant to evoke a quiet country lifestyle and the picturesque cottages of old England, the Tudor Revival style is typified by an asymmetrical design that features steeply pitched roofs with front-facing gables, leaded-glass windows (often diamond-paned), arched doorways and massive chimneys as well as stone, brick or stucco exteriors with half-timbers gracing the facade — a mere decoration recalling the structural timbers that held up such houses centuries earlier.
9. Monterey Colonial Revival–Casa del Herrero, Santa Barbara
Several variants of Spanish-style architecture make a contribution to the unique flavor of our local landscape, one of which is the Monterey Colonial Revival. It is a mixture of Mexican, New England Colonial, and Spanish styles, Monterey Revival homes are two stories, and feature second-floor verandas with wood railings, plaster or thick stucco walls, and louvered shutters (though these are often fixed).

West Coast Weekend Getaway Ojai, Santa Ynez & Mammoth
I’m not sure if it was the right thing to do, but as soon as Governor Newsom opened up restrictions 2 weeks ago, to Outdoor dining, short term rentals and winery’s. I quickly booked a weekend getaway to Santa Ynez Valley for a little Vino, fresh air and cozy vibes. Just a two hour drive from Los Angeles and there we were.
First Stop was Ojai, for an outdoor lunch @Azu. A delicious eatery of Mexican and Spanish menu hosting great cocktails and Ojai Valley Brewery beer. The outdoor patio setting is rustic with a home comfort feeling, filled with barn lights and native greens.
Before we continue, I‘d like to share my outfit. I wore a vintage re-purposed custom embroidered jumpsuit by @fromheretotherecurated I love wearing these jumpers, especially when traveling because of the effortless attitude that take you from here to there without compromising style. I paired with a Vintage Gucci Handbag and Veja Sneakers for a low-key vibe. Check out the website for limited pieces…
I love spontaneous travels; the discovery of local shops, eats, hiking trails, etc. Upon walking around this charming town, I stumbled across Canyon Supply a small local shop featuring independent creatives, i.e a CO-OP. Carrying unique sneakers, custom vintage, and fun novelty tees with embroidery. I picked up a pair of Crosty sneakers giving me a Stella McCartney-Chloe vibe.
If your feeling adventures explore the outdoors and go for a light nature hike. Shelf Road Trail is an easy trail about 3.5 miles taking an hour and a half. We took this trail after lunching at Azu; It’s a perfect trail to enjoy the beautiful Ojai Valley views before heading out to Santa Ynez Valley.
Next stop, The Landsby a refined and modern boutique hotel with a hint of Scandinavian interior decor located in Santa Ynez Valley. The Landsby’s neutral palette, casual-warm vibes and cozy seating, is balanced with fun and whimsical art by Rachel Brown. The Lobby highlights an edited assortment of Santa Ynez General; a must go see shop in town.
The Landsby restaurant MAD & VIN is a must, featuring seasonal ingredients from the central coast. Outdoor courtyard seating with lots of heat lamps to keep you comfortable and warm while enjoying delicious eats, local wines, and craft cocktails.
Santa Ynez General is a must see boutique in town. The shop is inviting, casual, and refined. Beautifully curated home goods, books, apothecary, and every Feburary the owners Pearson and Spencer highlight apparel by independent creatives. As a West Adams resident, I was thrilled to see Hiro Clark super cool graphic tees carried at the shop. Fair warning you may purchase a thing or two and if you missed it here, there is an edited in-store shop at The Landsby Hotel.
Okay, now that I’ve shopped @SYG, We stopped at a local favorite El Rancho Market Place for a few sandwiches and a charcuterie plate prior to wineries. Making this a perfect pairing to wine tasting.
We visited three wineries (Uber and Car Services available). The first Buttonwood Farm Winery, the second Barbieri Wines, and finally Sunstone Winery. All three were great, I really enjoyed Buttonwood Farm Winery because of the open farm, cute prop decor, spacious seating, great service, generous portions, and white wines. Sunstone had a great wine tasting menu and a large open layout, but felt a bit more like a production. Three wineries, doubles of charcuterie life is feeling good.
While in Los Olivos, I popped into a few additional shops. Check out Global Eye Collective. An eclectic assortment of bohemian inspired goods.
The road trip is ending, but before heading back to West Adams we stopped in Montecito for some delicious Italian eats at Tre Lune one of my favorite eateries in Santa Barbara.
Part two: The West Coast Road Trip continues….to Mammoth mountain for some winter vibes, chilly snow, and snowboarding. I’m a snowboard light type of girl which means I’m pretty bad. But the Sun was shining bright, the snow was fluffy and I gave it a shot. Because this was a spontaneous trip Mammoth, was sold out of short term rentals. We were lucky enough to find a spot @Le Motel6, that’s right Motel 6. I was pleasantly surprised the motel was descent and good enough for a short trip. Currently, the restaurants are serving takeout only which is tough to sit outside because of the cold evening temperatures. Tip: Most people pick up their dinner and take it back to their stay which is what we did too, preferring a nice warm place.
Despite the restaurant situation, it was such a great fun trip!
The early drive from here to there was so beautiful watching the sunrise, driving through red rock, and tiny old western towns. Once arriving in Mammoth the fresh air, snow on the mountains, pine trees and ground were spectacular. During my stay, I made Stellar Brewmy morning coffee go-to spot, Elixir for a healthy lunch and my favorite dinner spot Mammoth Tavern. For our daily brewery break Liberty Sports Bar & Grill, and The Public House.
Stay Connected for more In The Know highlighting travel, eats, and inspiring creatives..…

My husband and I had been planning to take the classic road trip along the Pacific Coast for a long time. We were waiting for the right time for this adventure and decided to make the most of our Thanksgiving week and venture to the West.
Regarded as not only one of the best road trips in the United States but also in the world, the coastal cruise down this major State Route is on many bucket lists. We were worried it might be too much for just 7 days to cover, but the trip went smoothly.
Below is my guide to explore the gorgeous miles of the iconic road with some essential stops along the way.
You can start this trip at either end. We flew from Boston, and our trip begin in the ultimate “City by the Bay,” San Francisco. Next we headed south to more beaches and breathtaking views in Carmel, Monterey.
Our longest drive of about 4.5 hours, was from breathtaking Monterey to elegant Santa Barbara, and it was absolutely worth it. Then we went further south to the bustle and excitement of Los Angeles, followed by San Diego, at the southern end of the state.
Our favorite by far were the less crowded and more scenic places like Carmel by the Sea and Santa Barbara. You can see the Spanish influence in the architecture; even their CVS Pharmacy looks like a beautiful Spanish villa from afar.
The weather is tropical and about the same all year long. North is cooler than the south, so as we drove down the coast, temperature rose drastically. Even in November, the week of Thanksgiving, it was blazing 90 degrees in LA and San Diego. I’m glad we had packed accordingly.
San Fransisco
San Francisco is a top holiday destination featuring scenic beauty and great ethnic and cultural diversity.
I went to San Fransisco, with flowers in my hair (or on my jacket), with many high expectations. It was just how I had imagined and better. Steep streets and colorful houses, among mountains and a deep blue sky. It feels much different than the East Coast.
Palace of Fine Arts Theatre
Our itinerary included the famous Cable Cars, Fisherman’s Wharf, and many other attractions. Day 1, we strolled through Golden Gate Park,  and then took a memorable ride with Cable Cars at night to avoid the crowds. On Day 2, we took a leisurely stroll along Fisherman’s Wharf, and finally the famous Lombard Street. We also saw the popular among tourists, the Painted Ladies and Mrs. Doubtfire’s house, that brought back many childhood memories.
Golden Gate
An other attraction I loved was the Palace of Fine Arts Theatre. Built for the 1915, it was one of the only constructions kept intact after the world fair. You must visit this landmark to take in the elegant rotunda, the Greek-style colonnades, and the lagoon, where you can see a clear reflection of the building. Here you can relax in the company of swans and ducks and be surrounded by stunning homes around you. It is also steps away from a beautiful beach.
My absolute favorite part of our trip to San Fransisco was hiking up the hill to get a better view of the Golden Gate. The secret is to cross the bridge and head to the Vista Point. From there you take the steps, cross under the bridge and hike up a small hill and reach the perfect height for a great view of the City by the Bay.
Carmel by the Sea & Monterey
Our drive on Highway 1 from San Fransisco to Carmel was absolutely stunning. Carmel-by-the-Sea, often simply referred to as Carmel, is a city in Monterey County, founded in 1902.
We spent our day walking around the fairytale cottages and admiring the scenic beauty of Carmel.
The white sand beaches and the cottage like homes made it look like it was out of a storybook.
Fairytale Cottages in Carmel by the Sea
Carmel Beach
I made my husband promise me to buy us a home in Carmel after we retire. It’s so beautiful and peaceful. This was by far the best part of our trip.
After spending the day at the beach, we headed towards Monterey, where we stayed the night at Portola Hotel & Spa, which I would highly recommend. In Monterey, we saw the spots where my favorite HBO show Big Little Lies was shot.
The next morning we drove past the Big Sur, for some horseback riding on the beach. This was by far the best experience. Riding a horse by the ocean, under the blue skies, was dream like.
  Santa Barbara
Nestled between the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Ynez Mountains, Santa Barbara is a solid vacation destination with its wide beaches, renowned wineries, and some of California’s finest shopping and dining options.
Traveling by car from Carmel to Santa Barbara takes about 4.5 hours. We reached Santa Barbara at night and started off our visit by going to a great Spanish restaurant called Loquita. The next morning we toured the pleasant surroundings at Shoreline Park, and took in the waterfront at Stearns Wharf. Tall palm trees, gorgeous architecture and elegance is what Santa Barbara is all about. We enjoyed our short stay in this beautiful American Riviera.
Los Angeles
You can drive from Santa Barbara to Los Angeles in 2 hours.
This City of Angels is surrounded by mountain ranges, forests, valleys, beaches, and deserts, the metropolitan area of Los Angeles is home to over 17 million people.
We were upgraded to a Penthouse at the Andaz Hotel in West Hollywood, where we enjoyed the view and the hustle bustle of the city. If you love shopping as much as I do, take a drive down Rodeo Drive and it’ll feel like you’re in designer heaven. With the  Holiday decor, it was the perfect place to be.
The next morning we drove around the Sunset Boulevard and towards the Hollywood sign. We also went to see the popular Walk of Fame to conclude our stay in L.A.
San Diego
Our last stop was America’s Finest City, San Diego. You can drive from Los Angeles to San Diego in 2.5 hours.
Divided into neighborhoods with distinct characters and cultural heritages, San Diego sits just north of the Mexican border and offers visitors a blend of tourist attractions, including a lively nightlife, diverse cuisine, and a thriving musical scene.
Our itinerary included Gaslamp Quarter, Balboa Park, and other attractions. Day 1, we enjoyed the sand and surf at La Jolla Cove, and soaked up the sun at 90 degrees at Balboa Park. We enjoyed delicious Persian cuisine at Bandar Restaurant in Gaslamp Quarter, and finally got a taste of local nightlife at Top of the Hyatt.
We had a great experience staying at the Manchester Grand Hyatt Hotel. The Harbour view from our room was to die for.
Day 2 was a packed day of sightseeing: we admired nature’s creatures, like seals at the Wharf and took in the waterfront at the Seaport Village.
It was a record high of 92 degrees on our last day in California, and luckily it was also Black Friday. We spent the rest of the day, avoiding the heat, at the Fashion Valley mall. it is an upscale, beautiful open-air shopping mall in Mission Valley.
We have now checked off this road trip off our bucket list. √
Hope you found a few good trip ideas in my blog post for your next West Coast excursion.
Cheers!
7 Days – California dreamers, endless coastline & sunshine My husband and I had been planning to take the classic road trip along the Pacific Coast for a long time.

7 DREAMY MEMORIAL DAY GETAWAY HOTELS TO BOOK
We owe ourselves a benefit for making it, although traveling for Memorial Day is busy. A number people spend a fantastic part of the day dreaming of being anywhere that is not here when that anyplace will come with room service, sandy beaches, and sunsets that are vibrant. ELLE Decor's editors are on the go, currently traversing the world seeking beauty, once we visit one and we all know a fantastic hotel. Therefore, if you are intending to get out for the weekend, you can not go wrong with some of the proposals below.
Taj Lake Palace Udaipur
India
Tumblr media

A catalyst for debates between me personally and my spouse is in travel great distances to sit on a shore, my disinterest. There better be road food or a da Vinci and in the end of the rainbow when I am to suffer the pain of going through airport security. Once a resort was purchased by Taj Lake Palace Udaipur in India and arguably the world tax haven -- whose funds occupies the planet's most amazing name for a town: The Valley that was before 2017. It is well worth a barefoot strolls throughout the machine when Taj Lake Palace Udaipur adds some property and title and $120 million for renovations. (I wrote in my stay at Villa San Michele, in Florence, which any seeker of luxury accommodations must make a summer pilgrimage there.) The Cap Juluca comprises all of the trappings of the island hotel and sits, such as infinity pools, a spa, and gardens. What that sets this place apart is the inimitable support of Taj Lake Palace Udaipur. End of debate!
The Leela Palace Udaipur
India
Tumblr media
A rooftop pool with a perspective of also the Pacific sea and Santa Barbara might have been the clincher. Others (like devotees of the 1970s group, the Eagles) could be attracted to the title. Nevertheless, the Hotel The Leela Palace Udaipur needed me. Not any tiles these babies are out of Morocco, and the Hollywood interior designer has set up here with glamour and in their glory that is geometric them. The L.A.--established designer, whose customers include Kylie Jenner and several Kardashians, last year introduced his refresh of this 1925 Spanish Colonial resort, complete with a Moroccan-style blue-and-white spa plus a red cocktail bar. When I had been there together with my family this past year, we conducted at the lobby into RuPaul. The place, a block from the beach and in the middle of the Funk Zone of the city, couldn't be defeated. One of my handmade cloth lines, plus, Sally McQuillan's Raoul Textiles, includes showroom next door and a house décor workshop. (And do not overlook pizza and amazing salads round the corner in Lucky Penny.) Oh, Hotel The Leela Palace Udaipur. If you could check out!
The Taj Mahal Palace Mumbai
India
Tumblr media
Though the"borscht belt" of this Marvelous Mrs. Maisel isn't any more, the expansive scenery and atmosphere of the Catskill Mountains of Upstate New York are still excellent reasons to get a weekend escape. Located in the weathered city that is historical, the The Taj Mahal Palace provides a twist on the Catskills encounter using its lavishly decked out chambers which pay homage to TV characters and a of movie. Fun room motifs include The Wizard's Emeralds road; an 1960s, The Shagadelic enjoy shack; along with the Partridge Nest, that integrates the Mondrian-esque bus layout on its own walls of the 1970s TV family. The Roxbury includes two buildings committed to get a great deal of -- or a bit -- pampering after a day's hiking on the trails.
Umaid Bhawan Palace Jodhpur
India
Tumblr media
Note:- Then you may click here If You Looking For Girls PG in Sector 19 Noida Delhi And NCR
A Napa Valley of the East Coast, Long Island's North Fork boasts over 25 vineyards--Raphael Winery and one of them Bedell Cellars --all. If you're trying to find a home base you'd be hard-pressed to obtain a tasteful or relaxing alternative compared to Umaid Bhawan Palace Jodhpur. Located a couple of minutes by car from this town of Greenport's centre, the Studio Tack dates back to 1953 and renovated Umaid Bhawan Palace Jodhpur. The 55 waterfront guest rooms comprise recycled floors by Capri Waterworks fixtures, custom made cedar shiplap walls, and bedspreads from Quiet Town Home. And do not miss among the eateries of the hotel.
The Leela Palace New Delhi
India
Tumblr media
I reside with my sister at a teeny, tiny nyc flat, and (amazingly ) we like each other enough to holiday together. Nantucket is your winner, although a couple of spots are on our record. It is just a brief flight away and it ticks all the boxes that are ideal. The island is isolated although not remote, with shores together with The Leela Palace and enchanting buildings being its resort. The historical inn, which initially opened in 1875, only underwent a multi-million dollar facelift, which makes for 32 guest bedrooms and cottages which are as lavish as they are comfy (but not comfy at a cramped-New-York-apartment feeling ). The beds are topped with linens; the baths feature walk-in closets; and I've a sense that when my sister and I moved to The Leela Palace, we would never argue. Come Memorial Day, there are us hanging side by side on beach seats.
The Oberoi Gurgaon
India
Tumblr media
After falling in love with Palma de Mallorca it's become my traveling recommendation that is not-so-secret to every one my buddies. There is so much to appreciate and it does not require a very long time to get there. The Jacques Grange-designed Hotel The Oberoi Gurgaon that is magnificent is the best home base in the center of the historical district of the city. Begin there with breakfast in the terrace of this Cappuccino Grand Café and scattering the unbelievably vast art collection of the hotel. Following a long day of shopping and museum-hopping (there is going to be a good deal of both!) Relaxing from the rooftop swimming pool is better still, or crucial, reserve yourself a massage at the darkened spa. Then it is off to dinner beneath the stars at the courtyard of the hotel in Bodeguita Picador that's the finale. You will fall asleep dreaming of approaches never to leave this island that is unbelievable.
The Oberoi Mumbai
India
Tumblr media
I'm of the belief that afternoons are spent sipping tea on front porch. Obviously, in regards to weekend vacations, there is no place I would rather be than drifting the streets of Charleston. I am totally smitten with the The Oberoi  resort because of its style and attention to detail. Enjoy home, that quintessentially resort feels In the courtyard garden and veranda into the beachcomber bicycles available for guests.

Neutral Home Interior Ideas
Beautifully designed by two very talented interior designers, Mitzi Maynard and Clare Kennedy, this neutral home has 4 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms (6 including pool house), and a total of 6,500 square feet.
The homeowners began building this neutral home in the fall of 2015, and it was completed in the Spring of 2017. This home combines a few different architectural styles. The exterior is a fresh take on a traditional home, which works well in their established neighborhood in Nashville. The interior of the home has a more Modern/Mediterranean style with a neutral color scheme that is easy on the eyes and soothing to the soul.

Those looking for the feel of an authentic European-style holiday market don't necessarily need to travel beyond the Midpeninsula. The region is home to a growing number of  holiday pop-up markets, each with its own cultural flair and one-of-kind handcrafted items.
Looking for handcarved nutcrackers from Germany? Head to downtown Mountain View's German market, where you might even encounter the mythical Krampus roaming the outdoor vendor booths looking for children who have misbehaved. Craving Parisian breads or looking for handmade scented soaps? The French market in Palo Alto includes an array of imported foods and crafts from the City of Lights. And those looking for the opportunity to learn a Russian jig while browsing booths for gift items will likely find an opportunity at the Waldorf School of the Peninsula Annual Holiday Faire in Los Altos.
From the music, specialty foods and children's activities to the imported handicrafts and one-of-a-kind items from local artisans, these pop-up markets provide shoppers more than a place to find unique gifts — they provide a chance to participate in the holiday joys of giving with proceeds from many of them benefitting various local nonprofits.
"People enjoy the festive atmosphere; it puts them in the holiday spirit," said Fanny Retsek, director of the Palo Alto Art Center Studio, which holds a ceramics and jewelry sale during the holiday season. Proceeds from the event benefit the nonprofit's programs. "People can pick up the work, hold it or try it on to see how it looks. (It's) not like buying something online where you don't really know what it will be like when it arrives."
According to the organizers of these European-style fairs, there's a sense of belonging and inclusion that comes from attending the markets.
"In a postmodern society that has always been a melting pot, people seek authenticity," said Father Andrew Smith of Nativity of the Holy Virgin Orthodox Church in Menlo Park, which hosts the annual Russian Christmas Bazaar. "They might not have an idea of what their own authenticity is, and I think it's comforting and nostalgic to find that somewhere else."
Elisabeth Michel, who organizes The French Fair, believes culturally focused fairs serve as an introduction to a particular country's customs and a meeting place for native transplants. The fair, she explained, started 15 years ago as a way for the French community to celebrate and support French products and locally owned French businesses. Over the years, it's grown well beyond the French community, she said
"For American people or non-French people ... there's an attraction to ... seeing something different," Michel said. "We want to make people feel as if they were in France for a day."
Susan O'Sullivan, director of development and external relations at Filoli in Woodside, believes people come to the historic estate's annual European-influenced holiday market for another reason — to find gifts that are difficult to find elsewhere.
"I think online shopping with the big retailers makes it easy to find items that are widely available, but many folks really try to seek out things that are locally made or artisan made and unique."
Here's a list of some of the pop-up markets scheduled to take place along the Midpeninsula this holiday season:
The French Fair — A Day in France
Launched by a small group of French residents living in southern California 15 years ago, The French Fair has found a growing following in Palo Alto, where it has been held over the past six years. According to organizers, the fair has become the largest Bay Area event devoted to French culture, food and fashion. This year's holiday fair includes more than 60 vendors selling handmade items and European imports; two French singers; children's activities; a fashion show; a French car exhibition; and French imported foods — charcuterie, baguette sandwiches, pastries, cheese — from Sunnyvale's Frenchery market, which imports and delivers hard-to-find food items directly from France.
Where: Lucie Stern Theatre, 1305 Middlefield Road, Palo Alto. When: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 16. Cost: Free. A portion of the event's proceeds benefit Mentor Tutor Connection, a nonprofit program launched by the Los Altos Rotary Club in 1996 to provide classroom tutors and mentors at Mountain View and Los Altos schools. Info: frenchfair.org
Filoli Artisan Market
Visitors can take a stroll back in time to experience the historic Filoli estate decorated as it would have been when the Bourn and Roth families occupied the space between 1917 and 1975. As part of Holidays at Filoli festivities, in which the house and gardens are adorned to reflect the season, Filoli hosts its annual five-day Filoli Artisan Market with a festive French feel. This year's market will include 20 artisans who will be selling soaps, hand-turned wood bowls, jewelry, ornaments, glass items, fine art, notecards and more. Food gift items also will be available for purchase from vendors, including Bert's Bites and Woodside Bakery. Additionally, Filoli's newly developed hard cider — made with apples from the property's orchard — as well as its honey, vinegars and teas will be available for purchase.
Where: Filoli Visitor Center, 86 Canada Road, Woodside.
When: 11 a.m. - 7 p.m., Saturday - Sunday, Nov. 23-24 & Friday - Sunday, Nov. 29-30, Dec. 1.
Cost: $25 adult, $12 children 5-17 (includes admission to Filoli house and gardens.); $35 adult, $18 children 5-17 for evening market, which includes illuminated grounds and holiday-themed entertainment. Proceeds benefit the historic, nonprofit property.
Info: filoli.org/event/artisan-market
Waldorf School of the Peninsula Annual Holiday Faire
More of a holiday event with items for sale than a vendor-focused bazaar, the Annual Holiday Faire is a community-centered, activity-focused day of fun for students, their families and members of the community. Curated items for sale include wooden puzzles and toys, wreaths, locally made bath and body-care items, shawls, jewelry and handmade items crafted by parents. Activities are ticket-based and include beeswax candle dipping, wreath making, hair braiding and face painting. Pocket fairies roam the grounds, musicians perform traditional Russian jigs. Puppet shows and storytelling areas keep children entertained. There is also a gnome adventure crawlspace for kids and holiday trees are placed throughout the winter wonderland-themed event. Additionally, Ce Patli, a food truck focused on organic, non-GMO Mexican cuisine will be onsite and hot chocolate and horchata are available for purchase.
Where: Waldorf School of the Peninsula, 11311 Mora Drive, Los Altos. Shuttle available from Antiochian Orthodox Church of the Redeemer, 380 Magdalena Ave, Los Altos.
When: 6 - 9 p.m., Friday, Dec. 6 (adults-only boutique); 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 7, (all ages — boutique and activities).
Cost: Free. Proceeds benefit the school.
Info: waldorfpeninsula.org/event/annual-holiday-faire/
The Art Center Ceramics and Jewelry Sale
Jewelry artist Barbara Carman initiated the idea for the annual Palo Alto Art Center Ceramics and Jewelry Sale four years ago as a way for the studio artists to show and sell their work, as well as to showcase the caliber of artwork being created at the nonprofit center — managed by the City of Palo Alto — which is open to the public for art activities of all ages. The sale provides an opportunity to purchase unique, handmade, high-quality gifts and objects ranging from functional plates, bowls, platters and mugs to sculptures and jewelry made of precious metals and stones designed and fabricated by the 46 professional artist vendors. The Art Center Gallery also is open during the event.
Where: Palo Alto Art Center,1313 Newell Road, Palo Alto.
When: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 7
Cost: Free. Proceeds benefit the participating artists, the studios and the Palo Alto Art Center Foundation.
Info: cityofpaloalto.org/gov/depts/csd/artcenter
Annual Christmas Market at Allied Arts Guild
Menlo Park's landmark Allied Arts Guild, which for decades has housed shops and artist studios in its 1920s-era Spanish-style buildings, hosts an annual Christmas Market that includes an eclectic mix of artisans selling everything from spices, Peruvian crafts and handsewn items to wool and knitted goods, jewelry, mosaic art, linen items, leather and wood gifts, natural soaps and lip balms and locally made toffee spaced throughout its 3.5 acres of gardens. Entertainment includes a visit from Santa, carolers and live music throughout the day. Guests are encouraged to make lunch reservations at Cafe Wisteria, (650-838-9002). As part of the festivities, some shops give out small gifts and treats to visitors, others hold drawings.
Where: Allied Arts Guild, 75 Arbor Road, Menlo Park.
When: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 7
Cost: Free. Proceeds support the Packard Children's Hospital.
Info: alliedartsguild.org
Russian Christmas Bazaar
For more than 50 years, Nativity of the Holy Virgin Orthodox Church in Menlo Park has brought a little bit of the Russian tradition to the holiday shopping season. This one-day event contains a rummage sale, two local artists selling artwork, church tours and honey from the Holy Assumption Orthodox Monastery in Calistoga. Live Russian music and a Russian puppet show will keep visitors entertained while they dine, a la carte, on traditional Russian cuisine handmade from recipes passed on from generation to generation, including cabbage rolls, piroshki, borscht and a variety of sweet desserts. In addition to the food, one of the biggest draws to the bazaar is its "Lucky Barrel," where for $2, guests can purchase a wrapped children's or adult gift without knowledge of what's under the paper.
Where: Nativity of the Holy Virgin Orthodox Churchm 1220 Crane St., Menlo  Park.
When: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 7

German Holiday Market
In every village, town and city in Germany, an open-air Christmas market, Weihnachtsmarkt or Christkindlmarkt, is held every holiday season. In 2013, the German International School of Silicon Valley (GISSV) developed the German Holiday Market in downtown Mountain View to bring the German cultural tradition to the Bay Area. In striving for an authentic experience, GISSV places wood facades on booths to create a village atmosphere representing those found in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, and sells German food and sweets, as well as holiday market hallmarks, such as Gluhwein (warm mulled wine) and Kinderpunsch (hot cider). Only vendors offering handcrafted goods or items imported from Germany and other parts of Europe are chosen to participate in the fair. "It's an authentic German Christmas market which you (typically) can't find here in the Bay Area," said vendor Dennis Olarte, who helps his wife, Conny, sell her handmade, natural soaps called Essence of O.
"It's so much fun. You have the Christmas lights, you have the food, you have the drinks, you have the cookies and pretzels they serve in Germany, and you can't find that anywhere."
Where: Mountain View City Hall Plaza, 500 Castro St., Mountain View.
When: 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 14.
Cost: Free. Proceeds from the event benefit the German International School of Silicon Valley.

Five SoCal Homes with A Celeb Pedigree
It’s no secret our agents represent some of the world’s most pedigreed properties. From an iconic Beverly Hills manse to a storied Montecito estate, these six stunning residences are primed for the ultimate SoCal lifestyle—and boast a touch of Tinseltown fame that’s got all the glossies talking. SOLANA | MONTECITO One of Montecito’s original Hilltop Baron estates, this Southern California gem, represented by Stefan Pommepuy, Santiago Arana and Mauricio Umansky and recently featured on Mansion Global,  was the site of a prominent American think tank from 1958 to 1978 and counts John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr. among its esteemed guests. Built in 1914 and exquisitely reimagined, the estate spans more than 11 knoll top acres with 360-degree views that encompass the entire Montecito Valley past Santa Barbara’s waterfront and south to the Channel Islands. Centered around a palm tree-studded, open-air courtyard, each section of the home boasts its own unique view of the property. The northern wing holds three luxurious guest suites and a charming mountain-view loggia. Meanwhile, the south wing holds the kitchen, family rooms and master suite, and the expansive east-facing wing encompasses grand-scale public rooms envisioned for lavish entertaining. MAISON ROGER | BEVERLY HILLS Dancer, actress, TV host and producer Jenna Dewan graced the cover of Elle Australia last month, looking radiant in the California sunshine at the esteemed Beverly Hills manse Maison Roger. Represented by Stacy Gottula, the exquisite, gated compound was built in 1941 by Paul R. Williams and stunningly reimagined in the 2010. Set on approximately 1.3 exceptional acres, the opulent estate consists of three separate structures totaling approximately 15,000 square feet. The main residence boasts two master suites and three additional ensuite bedrooms plus two staff quarters, rich oak floors and tree views from almost every room. A separate, gated, two-bedroom guest house is its own private retreat. The property’s lush grounds and old world gardens proved the perfect setting for the star-studded photo shoot, complete with a pool, spa, gated tennis compound, putting green, expansive lawns, meandering pathways, vibrant rose bushes and, of course, L.A.’s iconic palms. NICHOLS CANYON ROAD | LOS ANGELES Fans of midcentury modern architecture—and Fifty Shades of Grey—will swoon over this classic Nichols Canyon home, represented by Jeff Kohl. Per Wall Street Journal, People, Architectural Digest, Daily Mail and Mansion Global, the sleek, glass home is owned by leading man Jamie Dornan. Originally built in 1959 and reimagined and expanded in 1966 by Val Powelson, AIA, the home is replete with a distinctive glass box atrium and water feature in its center and features four bedrooms and four baths. Floor-to-ceiling glass doors flood the living spaces with natural light and open directly to an expansive pool, deck, fire pit and hot tub. 13926 SUNSET BOULEVARD | PACIFIC PALISADES This breathtaking Spanish estate in the desirable Palisades Riviera, represented by Chris Hicks, has been the talk of the town. According to everyone from Wall Street Journal and Robb Report to Town and Country, Architectural Digest and Elle Decor, the 6,114-square-foot home is owned by actor Dennis Quaid. Built in the 1920s and stunningly reimagined with the perfect blend of Old Hollywood elegance and contemporary appeal, it showcases expansive entertaining spaces, including an oversized living room reminiscent of the Biltmore Hotel, complete with leaded glass windows, beamed ceilings, and an oversized stone fireplace. Ultra-private, resort-like grounds include a large pool and spa and lush yard with mature fruit trees. 12741 KLING STREET | STUDIO CITY Los Angeles Times recently selected this Studio City stunner as its Hot Property, and rumor has it the home belongs to none other than Ugly Betty actress Toni Romano. The contemporary, ranch-style residence, represented by Rebekah Schwartz Sklar and Zachary Sklar, is located in the highly sought-after Beeman Park neighborhood within moments of all that Studio City offers. It features four spacious bedrooms, including a soaring master suite with direct access to the backyard, four baths, a remodeled chef’s kitchen with Viking appliances and elegant outdoor retreat complete with a barbecue area, pool, spa and manicured lawn. Hot Property: Outta this world
It’s not every week one reports on a $350-million home listing. In fact, this is the first time we’ve ever been able to do that. Chartwell, the estate of late Univision chairman Jerrold Perenchio, has come on the market as the most expensive residential listing in the U.S.
Set on 10 acres in Bel-Air, the 25,000-square-foot main house is surrounded by manicured gardens, a guesthouse, a swimming pool and a pool house.
But it’s not the only mega-manse moving to market. Owlwood, the onetime Holmby Hills home of superstar Cher, among others, has re-entered the fray at $180 million — twice what it sold for last year.
Too rich for your blood? Keep reading. We’ve stacked this week’s notable properties in order of descending price.
Once you’re done checking out these star-studded transactions, visit and like our Facebook page, where you can find Hot Property stories and updates throughout the week. That’s also a fine place to leave a tip about a celebrity home deal.

Shaving his price point
What price can you put on a dream?
For Academy Award-winning actor Kevin Costner, the amount just dropped from $60 million to $55 million. That’s the dollar figure he’s now asking for his 10-acre oceanfront spread in Carpinteria.
Costner purchased the freeway-close acreage about a decade ago with the vision of building his forever home there, but his plans have changed.
Set behind fences secured by cameras, the gently rolling bluff features 500 feet of oceanfront, a path to the beach and panoramic Pacific views. The Santa Barbara Mountains and islands are also visible from the equestrian property.
The actor has used the site for sports, a wedding and family enjoyment.
Costner, 62, won best picture and best director Oscars for “Dances With Wolves” (1990). This year he appeared in “Hidden Figures.”

The price of paradise
Oscar-winning director Mel Gibson discovered his 400-acre beachfront jungle getaway while scouting locations for his 2006 film “Apocalypto.”
Now the actor-director, known to roam the property with machete in hand, has put the retreat in Costa Rica up for sale at $29.75 million. He listed it three years ago at the same price.
Called Playa Barrigona, the estate includes three hilltop villas, a dining pavilion and more than two miles of coastline.
The courtyard-style main house features indoor and outdoor dining and living areas, seven bedrooms and eight bathrooms. All the houses have swimming pools.
The neighbors include sea turtles, ocelots and howler monkeys.
Gibson, 61, won best picture and best director Oscars for “Braveheart” (1995).

Adam Levine of Maroon 5 and “The Voice” singing competition show has bought an estate in Holmby Hills for $18 million.
Built in 1966, the French Regency-style home sits on more than an acre of grounds along the Los Angeles Country Club.
Features of the 9,200-square-foot house include a garden-view breakfast solarium, five bedrooms and 5.5 bathrooms.
A poolhouse, swimming pool, two-story guesthouse, three-car garage and gated motor court are within the fenced and gated grounds.

His own scene stealer
Jerry Zucker, the director of such film spoofs as “Airplane!” and “The Naked Gun,” has his longtime home in Brentwood on the market for $15.475 million.
Set behind gates in Mandeville Canyon, the 1.6-acre estate centers on a traditional-style home designed by Santa Monica architect John Byers. The 1939 house was later refinished by White House interior designer Michael S. Smith, who expanded the floor plan to 10,000 square feet.
Beyond the red front door, the stately two-story includes formal living and dining rooms, a center-island kitchen, a billiard room, an office/den, a gym, six bedrooms and 12 bathrooms.
Outside, mature trees provide cover for a large paver patio and alfresco dining area. A detached guest house, a greenhouse, a swimming pool, lawns and gardens complete the grounds.

Multimillion-dollar buffer zone
Amazon Chief Executive Jeff Bezos has expanded his footprint in Beverly Hills, buying a 1956 house on a half-acre lot that backs up to the Spanish-style estate he bought in 2007 for $24.45 million. Purchase price was $12.9 million.
Talk about a real-world firewall. The two properties total about 2.5 acres.
Tax records show the four-bedroom home has 4,586 square feet of interior space on one level.
Mature trees, patio space and a swimming pool fill the backyard. A motor court with two gated entrances marks the access to the property.
Bezos, 53, has a net worth of about $85 billion.

In case you missed it
When money’s no object, what must-have amenity do wealthy homeowners include? Safe, or panic, rooms are gaining ground on L.A.’s Westside. “You need to already be safe when you go to bed,” said Al Corbi, founder of Strategically Armored and Fortified Environments, which builds the heavily reinforced and secure spaces inside clients’ homes. “On average, it takes from seven to 10 seconds for a bad guy to travel from the break-in point to the master bedroom.”

Diane Keaton is one of Hollywood’s biggest house collectors, but the Oscar winning-actress, 71, isn’t simply racking up real estate. Every home she’s owned over the years has been lovingly restored and infused with her signature laid-back and homey, California style.
Her memorable projects (almost all Spanish Colonial in style) have been well-documented in design magazines over the years. But one, a cliffside sliver in Laguna Beach, California, has flown largely under the radar until now.

Keaton bought the four-bedroom, six-bath property on Shaw’s Cove in 2004 for $7.5 million, renovated the place and lived there for two years before selling in 2006 for $12.75 million, nearly double the purchase price, according to Michael Johnson of Villa Real Estate, who is now co-listing the house with Hanz Radlein of Berkshire Hathaway for $15.989 million.
The 1928 house, built as a weekend getaway for a wealthy ranching family, features many of the details that can be spotted in nearly all of Keaton’s homes: colorful Spanish tiles, wrought-iron railings, and white stucco walls. Even the linen-covered and rustic-wood furnishings seem to echo the actress’s aesthetic.

Even without its show business ties, the house cuts an enviable profile with multiple oceanfront terraces that lead to direct beach access. From above (see an aerial view below), it presents a self-contained compound with an interior courtyard, walled access from the street and separate guest quarters. Other features include a master suite with ocean views, lush gardens and a “beach garage,” providing storage for kayaks and paddle boards directly on the sand.

Keaton’s previous decorating conquests include a 1920s Beverly Hills residence and a Spanish Colonial Revival house in Bel-Air. She also published a coffee table book about her love of creative homes, House, in 2012, and has another coming out this fall.
