On This Day in History December 16, 1991: Kazakhstan became the last of the Soviet Satellite Republics (USSR) declare its independence from the Russia. Nursultan Nazarbayev became the country’s first and only President to date with Sergey Tereshchenko being appointed the first Prime Minister.
