One thing I learnt when I was in Vienna was that it was liberated by the Soviet Red Army during the Second World War. On this day, 13th April, 75 years ago, Vienna fell to the advancing Soviet forces (2nd and 3rd Ukrainian Fronts) after 11 days of intense urban fighting against the German defenders (6th SS Panzer Army) in what was known as the Vienna Offensive. I visited the Soviet War Memorial or The Heroes’ Monument of the Red Army located at Schwarzenbergplatz in Vienna which was built as a tribute to the approximately 17,000 fallen Soviet soldiers in that battle.
