Souyowrimo 2017 day 4
I’m just accepting the fact that I’m behind, and I’ll catch up when I catch up. Have some fluff! It’s under a cut solely for length.
4. Clothes swap (prompt list)
Souji Seta was freezing.
No matter how long he’d been in Inaba, even though it was his second winter, he couldn’t get used to how cold the house got. In Tokyo, he’d lived in an apartment. Not only did it have a wall unit, but all of the other apartments around them had wall units, and they tended to keep each other warm with ambient heat. Here, there was a kerosene heater and the ever-ubiquitous kotatsu (which, he had to admit, was amazing if too localized); the time it took to move from the small circles and cocoons of warmth to other circles and cocoons of warmth was filled with frigid agony. He couldn’t even have a kotatsu or a kerosene heater in his room, for fear of fire; his uncle had finally gotten him a space heater, but it only did so much.
Having Yosuke sleep over mitigated it to an extent; the brunette was a space heater in his own right, and while Souji loved him for a million other reasons, it was still a nice benefit. Now, however, it was morning, and Yosuke was getting a shower (he had to work in a couple of hours). When Souji rolled over, the cold sheets (colder, he swore, because they’d recently been under a warm body) made him recoil with a hiss, and he buried his head under the futon cover with a groan. It didn’t help that he wasn’t exactly wearing much, thanks to the evening before; they’d been so warm when they’d finally fallen asleep, though - and he’d been so boneless and content - that he hadn’t thought to grab his pajamas.
Sticking his head out of the covers, he spotted a familiar orange fleece shirt sitting, folded, on top of brown cargo pants, and without even thinking he reached for the shirt. The fleece was soft to his fingers - he’d hugged it a thousand times and loved how it felt - and it was a matter of moments before he shuffled into it. The shoulders were a little tight, and the chest was a little loose, but all-in-all it fit quite well and while it certainly wasn’t as good as having the brunette himself to snuggle up against, it was warm. And, bonus, it smelled like Yosuke.
Feeling somewhat mollified, Souji curled back up under the blanket; by the time the running water stopped and Yosuke came into the room, wrapped in a towel and Souji’s bathrobe, he was asleep again. He missed the brunette’s first questioning comment; it wasn’t until Yosuke started to look under the blankets that he woke up again, sitting up to rub his eyes. When he did, Yosuke turned.
“Hey partner, you haven’t seen my- you’re wearing it!”
“Huh?” Souji was very slow to wake up, and for a moment he just blinked at his boyfriend. He’d only just started to piece together what Yosuke was saying when the brunette’s expression shifted to an amused one as he sat down on the futon.
“I get it, you were cold. You’re too damn cute, you know that?” He wrapped an arm around Souji’s shoulders, and his partner snuggled into the embrace immediately. “You don’t have to take it off, but if that’s the case, then I’m going to wear your shirt.”
In Souji’s opinion, this didn’t have any drawbacks, so he nodded earnestly. Yosuke looked a little surprised, but then laughed; after giving his boyfriend a kiss, he got up to go rummage through the closet. After a few minutes, he held out a turtleneck and zippered overshirt. “Well, they definitely look warm. Whaddya think, partner? Will they suit me?”
Souji was finally starting to wake up, and he nodded again. Honestly, he thought they’d look nice on Yosuke - and once the brunette had it on, he was happy to note that he’d been correct.
By this point, Yosuke was running late, so he kissed Souji on the forehead, made his boyfriend promise to get up and not go back to sleep, and grabbed some toast on the way out (handed to him by a confused Nanako, who opened her mouth to ask why he was wearing big bro’s shirt, but then decided not to.) Souji eventually crawled out of bed, and once he had his coffee he was finally a sentient being again; he found his day of studying to be quite enjoyable - everything smelled like Yosuke, thanks to his shirt - and around lunchtime he picked up his phone to find a string of texts waiting for him from the brunette.
hey prtnr, u evr get up
been a good day
btw im keepin this shirt it smells like u
c u soon luv u
Their friends teased them, of course, but they didn’t swap back once that winter.

Sakura-san was frowning at him when he returned to the employees’ side of the bar and set down the coffee pot.
“You look beat, Hanamura. Why don’t you take off early today?” he asked. Yosuke considered it, he really did, but he had a good reason for working here, after all. Valentines Day was coming up soon and he was saving up for something special.

Souyowrimo 2017 day 12
12. Holding hands (prompt list)
It was the little things, like Yosuke’s hands, that kept Souji sane.
Every morning, he woke up to a sound; not of gentle tapping followed by ‘Big bro? Breakfast!’ but instead by a dreary alarm clock, screeching at him, reminding him that everything was his fault.
Every afternoon, he dragged himself into an empty house; he was greeted by a pair of small Detective Loveline-themed shoes and an old, worn winter jacket with a darned elbow and a half-empty packet of cigarettes just visible in one of the pockets.
He was drowning in sorrow and guilt. He kept it from the others - they needed him to be strong, to be responsible. They needed his support.
Not everyone was fooled.
One afternoon, Souji was sitting at his kotatsu, staring at his hands; he was drowning faster by the day, it seemed, and no matter what he tried to focus on, it wasn’t enough.
Not until a hand - unexpected, as he’d thought that Yosuke was still in the bathroom, so he’d let his facade drop just a little - covered his that he finally felt a little of the waters recede. There were no words to it, just a gentle pressure, a gentle warmth; when Souji looked up, he met Yosuke’s concerned gaze through eyes he hadn’t even realised were filled with tears until he blinked and one rolled down his cheek.
The hand over his tightened; Yosuke’s palm was warm and dry, and Souji could feel the callouses as they brushed across his fingers. When their fingers twined together, he found that he couldn’t hold it in any longer; as his face crumpled in grief, he leaned forward, placing his forehead against the back of the brunette’s hand as he started to sob. That was when Yosuke moved around the kotatsu, next to him, wrapping an arm around Souji’s shoulders as he tugged his boyfriend close.
“I gotcha, partner. Let it out.” The whisper was quiet, if rough - Yosuke understood what Souji was going through possibly more than anyone else - and the arm gently pressured Souji until he turned to bury his face against the brunette’s shoulder. As sobs filled the room, the clasped hands never parted, and Yosuke never moved, holding Souji as he mourned for the family he was afraid he’d never see again.
Things weren’t better after that, but they were a little easier. Any time - night or day - that Souji found himself feeling overwhelmed, he’d also find a hand covering his, holding his, gripping his, depending on how bad things were. And because of that hand - and that voice, and that presence - Souji somehow managed to stay adrift. If he wasn’t exactly swimming, at least he wasn’t drowning.
And when Nanako finally woke up the first thing she saw - after big bro’s face, after dad’s - was the partners’ clasped hands.

Souyowrimo day 5
5. Cuddles (prompt list)
I totally meant to write a slice-of-life fluff snip. This came out. Blame Yosuke.
Yosuke loves the curve of Souji's throat. He loves the way his chin fits over his partner's shoulder; he loves the smooth line of Souji’s collarbone. He loves the softness of Souji’s stomach as the brunettte wraps his arms around his partner’s waist; he loves the smell of Souji’s cologne as he brushes his lips across the fine silver hairs on the back of his partner’s neck. He loves the feel of Souji’s breath against his neck and lips when they’re waking up, or going to sleep; he loves the sound of Souji’s voice in his ear when he hits the right spots. He loves Souji’s sleepy mumble as he buries his face against Yosuke’s shoulder when he’s dreaming; he loves the feel of Souji’s fingers twined with his when they hold hands. He loves the way Souji's arm fits just perfectly under his elbow as they curl up together in bed; he loves how it tells him that they were made for each other. It’s one of many such signs, like the way their breathing syncs when they’re falling asleep together, or like the way they finish each other’s thoughts and sentences.
Yosuke just... loves Souji.

Souyowrimo 2017 day 10
Yep, I’m behind. Yep, I’ll catch up.
A few folks asked whether we’d ever see the Valentine’s Day confession that Yosuke mentions in Souji and Yosuke Get a Kitten, so here you go!
10. Valentine’s Day (prompt list)
Chin up, Souji. You can do this.
It was Valentine’s Day, and as one might expect, there was an odd air of excitement in the air - both within their group, and throughout the school. Most of the girls spent half the time staring down at their desks, and half their time whispering to their friends, and the boys, well-
Most of the boys were too nervous, too loud, too eager, eyeing the girls every time they looked down or away. But Souji’s group wasn’t any other group; it was the Investigation Team (even though they had nothing left to investigate), and the dynamic here was a little different. Kanji had eaten his bento at lunch with a self-satisfied air, a small, blue-and-black plaid box next to it that had Naoto’s neat handwriting on it. Souji had a paper bag that was fairly bursting under his desk that he was desperately trying to ignore, even as the other girls in his class kept glancing at it each time they walked by (he was just grateful that of his group, all of the chocolates he’d received were clearly friendship chocolates, even if Rise went out of her way to make it look like she was confessing. That… that was just Rise.)
Yosuke was the one Souji was most concerned about. He and the brunette had been tap-dancing around their feelings for almost a year now, and every time Souji had thought, finally, he had actual proof that Yosuke liked him, not just ‘liked’ him, something else would happen to make him doubt himself. Finally, however, he was tired of waiting, and scared that if he let it go on too long, he’d lose the brunette, he decided to make his move. Besides, if Rise was right, every time Yosuke pulled back was more proof that he did like Souji - after all, the brunette had always been worried about his image, and it had taken him a long time to come to terms with Kanji’s whole TV world fiasco.
(continued under the cut for length)
So Souji had stayed up entirely too late the night before making chocolates; they were tiny, strawberry-flavoured chocolate hearts, because Yosuke wasn’t that big on lots of candy, and he thought it would be nice to give the brunette something he could snack on without getting overwhelmed by sugar. If he wanted to keep them, of course. That was the rub. And then he’d put a note in Yosuke’s locker, unsigned, asking the brunette to meet him on the roof after school.
He wasn’t sure what Yosuke thought about the note. He was still holding it - he’d kept it close at hand the entire day, repeatedly flipping it back and forth as if trying to discern its author (Souji’s ‘good handwriting’ was almost copperplate, so he wasn’t worried that Yosuke would figure it out.) But he’d also been frowning for most of the day, and Souji - who’d hoped, at least, that the brunette would give him some sort of sign as to his feelings - was more than a little lost.
Does he hope it’s a girl? Does he hope it’s not? Does he wonder if it’s me?
But the die had been cast, and he was going to go through with this, no matter what. He and Yosuke had been friends - partners - for long enough that he was fairly certain that this wouldn’t ruin their friendship. But he couldn’t be sure - and the chance that he might lose the person he cared for most in the world terrified him. But he trusted Yosuke, and he was going to bank on that trust.
It didn’t mean his hands weren’t shaking by the time class let out. Knowing that Yosuke would be punctual to a fault - in fact, the brunette was already glancing towards the stairs - Souji gave him a smile he hoped looked confident.
“Don’t worry about me. You’ll be able to find me when you’re done, promise.”
Yosuke gave him a long, unreadable look - to the point that Souji was almost worried that he’d already seen through his friend’s plans - then nodded.
“Okay, partner. I’ll, uh- yeah. I’ll see you in a bit.” After one last look backwards, the brunette headed for the stairs to the roof; once he’d been gone for a couple of minutes, Souji took a deep breath - his heart was hammering so that he could barely hear anything else - wiped his clammy palms on his pants legs, and took the box of chocolates out of his bag. Knowing the brunette as he did, he’d gone for a plain box - just silver and white stripes, with a red ribbon - but there was no way it could be mistaken for anything other than Valentine’s chocolate.
Somehow, the stairs up to the roof had never seemed so long and so short before, simultaneously; it seemed like seconds before he was at the door, but he was already wishing it was over. And there Yosuke was, waiting; the brunette’s head snapped up as the door opened, and although he looked a little puzzled when he first saw that it was his friend, the moment his eyes fell on the box in Souji’s hands, they widened.
Souji was afraid he’d immediately run, but he didn’t; it didn’t stop all of the words Souji had been trying all day to plan, however, from flying out of his head. He knew that his face was crimson, but he had to say something, he had to, he’d already gotten this far, and he couldn’t just leave Yosuke hanging, and he needed to know, and-
“I uh. This, um- these, they’re small, I know you don’t like a lot of candy at once, but these shouldn’t be too sweet, and they’re, uh, strawberry-flavoured, you know, and I-”
Oh my god, Souji. Seriously?
“Here.” He thrust the box out towards Yosuke, who hadn’t moved, who was standing there with wide eyes and another unreadable expression. “These- these are for you. I like you, Yosuke. But if you don’t feel the same way, it’s okay, I just wanted to tell you.”
The brunette reached out to take the chocolates, as if in a daze; Souji was so nervous that as Yosuke’s hand touched his, he let go, and dropped the box, and he really wanted to just sink through the floor and die because Yosuke hadn’t said anything, nothing, and-
And then, before he could lean down to pick up the box, Yosuke took one step forward, wrapped an arm around Souji’s waist, pulled him in, and kissed him.
Yosuke was kissing him. He wasn’t dead, he hadn’t passed out, he wasn’t asleep, and Yosuke was kissing him. He could smell the brunette’s cologne, and- how?
It wasn’t a long kiss, and when they broke apart, Yosuke’s face was just as red as Souji’s, but he was wearing a bashful, adorable expression, and Souji couldn’t believe his eyes (or his lips). Bending down, the brunette picked up the box of chocolates; after looking it over, he carefully tucked it into his school bag, his other arm unwinding from Souji’s waist to reach for his partner’s hand. Souji, of course, wasn’t going to resist, but he really wished Yosuke would say something. He was just about to clear his throat when Yosuke finally turned to him, having composed his face to be a little less red.
“I was afraid I was going to have to turn some poor girl down, you know. And I was afraid I’d misread all of those times we hung out. I knew I was being a coward every time I could have said something and didn’t, and I know I’m really fucking lucky that- that you felt the same way, and that you didn’t get discouraged because I was a coward. I like you, too, Souji. Will you go out with me?”
And then, the world was all right. His hands were still clammy, his heart was still racing, but Souji felt such a sense of relief that he couldn’t help laughing.
“I dunno, I’ll think about it- okay, yes.”
Yosuke blinked at him for a moment, then started to laugh.
“Dork.”
“Yeah, well-”
“I know, I know. Takes one to know one.”
Nothing ever felt as good as laughing together with Yosuke, and Souji was pretty sure that nothing ever would.

Souyowrimo 2017 Day 11
So, these are going to spill over into December but I am going to write them all.
11. Confession (prompt list)
Nervously, Souji looked at the clock. It really was time - if he waited any longer, he might not be able to catch Yosuke before everyone else showed up. But- but it was so hard to gather up the courage! He could already see the look on his partner’s face, hear the change in his voice. Is he even going to want to talk to me again after this?
It terrified him.
He couldn’t not tell him, though. Souji knew that he owed it to his partner to be honest. So he gathered up his courage, cleared his throat, had a drink of water, chastised himself for killing time, and headed upstairs.
Opening the door to the roof, he could see Yosuke sitting in the sunshine - always his first spot after a long day, and of course, Souji always joined him. The brunette was smiling and humming, and for a brief moment Souji had a thought that maybe it’s going to go okay, and this isn’t going to put a wrench in our relationship.
I don’t have to tell him.
But in the end, he did. He’d never kept a secret from Yosuke, and he wasn’t going to start. Even as it made things twenty times harder when Yosuke looked up at him with that bright, sunny smile, Souji’s resolve only faintly wavered. Walking over, he took a seat next to the brunette.
“Yosuke, I- I have to tell you something.”
His partner’s expression shifted a little, and Souji could already feel his palms start to sweat; rubbing them nervously on his pants legs, he took a deep breath.
“I’m- I ate the pudding cake you bought for Nanako’s birthday, I tried to get a new one but they were all out, I’m so sorry, Yosuke, so sorry, it was a long day at class, and I came home late and tired and hungry and you were on night shift and I didn’t see your note until I’d already eaten half of it and I-” Here, he blushed with embarrassment. “-well, I thought you’d gotten it for me, and I know I was an idiot, and-”
What stopped him wasn’t a look of anger or disgust, it was the sound of his fiancé’s laughter. At the sound of a crinkling bag, Souji looked over to see Yosuke holding up a Junes bag, through which he could see two pudding cake boxes. When he looked up, meaning to ask how Yosuke knew, he was stunned silent by his partner’s dancing eyes and breathtaking smile.
“I know, partner, and to be fair, I wanted to get you one, too - but they only had one. So I made sure to grab two as soon as they restocked.” Smirking, he pulled one box out, opening it as he took out a convenience store plastic spoon. Scooping into the cake (the glistening caramel colour was so enticing and the sponge layer so perfectly round that Souji couldn’t help but be enraptured), Yosuke held the spoon out towards Souji. “This one is for you. Well, for us.”
Tearing his eyes from the cake, Souji leaned forward and took the bite, and it was amazing. The sweetness rolled down his tongue, but the smile on Yosuke’s face was better, and after he’d finished savouring his treat, he leaned forward.
“You really are something,” he murmured, meeting the brunette’s smile with one of his own before pulling Yosuke into a kiss that was a thousand times sweeter than the cake.
“Mmmm, well, I enjoy spoiling both you and Nanako, so what can I say?” After a few more minutes and kisses, however, the brunette pulled back with a sigh. “Okay, we need to go make sure her presents are wrapped; she and Dojima should be by soon, you know, and after that all we need to do is wait for Rise and Naoto to come by with dinner.”
To be honest, between Yosuke and the cake, Souji really didn’t want to ‘take a break’ right now - but it was Nanako’s birthday, and the thought of the smile on her face when she saw her cake, and presents (and big bro, and Yosuke-nii, and Rise-chan and Naoto-nii) was more than enough consolation. Also, Rise had said she’d be picking up fried chicken, and that was the kind of treat the partners didn’t often allow themselves, not since Souji liked to cook so much.
Besides, that pudding cake was his (well, theirs). They’d have time to pick up where they’d left off later.

Souyowrimo 2017 day 9
TWO IN ONE DAY! Maybe I’ll catch up?
9. Coffee (prompt list)
(I decided against the p5 crossover since other folks did it more justice than I could have.)
Yosuke was going to ask Souji out on a date if it killed him.
Of course, he was really hoping it wouldn’t involve death. Ideally, it wouldn’t even be embarrassing. In fact, as he sat on his bed one afternoon, trying both to ignore Teddie (who was flopping around on the carpet) as well as plan his maybe-hopefully-sorta-could-be date with Souji, Yosuke thought that, if fate smiled on him, maybe- well, it might go pretty well. He thought Souji might feel the same way he did, and if so, well… maybe they wouldn’t just be partners anymore. They’d be partner partners.
He had to rub his face at this thought to keep from blushing; he really didn’t need Teddie asking if he was getting a fever.
After a lot of careful thought and consideration, Yosuke decided that they’d go for coffee. It was a foolproof plan; everybody loved coffee, coffee shops were nice, casual places where you could nurse two-hundred-and-fifty yen for a couple of hours while you talked, and they had nice tables where you could talk without too many people listening in. Plus, people were pretty chill in a coffee shop. He’d buy coffee for Souji – anything his partner wanted, of course, maybe mocha? Souji liked chocolate – and one for himself, and they’d find a nice corner to sit in. They’d talk about the case, of course, because they always talked about the case, but then… they’d talk about them. Souji would sit next to Yosuke, not across from him, and after a while, Yosuke would just… take Souji’s hand. And once they were done, they’d head home, still holding hands. If they were lucky and it was a Saturday, maybe he could spend the night at Souji’s (although really, his brain was too frazzled to think about where that could lead); if they had to do it another evening, well – even if Yosuke couldn’t spend the night, he’d make sure to give Souji a goodnight kiss. A coffee-flavoured kiss.
Just thinking about it made his face heat up; he was just wondering if Souji used lip balm, or-
“Yoooooosuke!!!! Why are you rubbing your lips? Your face is beary red, do you have a fever?”
Ted’s voice, sounding in his ear, startled him so much that he almost fell off the bed.
“JEEZE, YOU STUPID BEAR, DON’T DO THAT!”
Well, at least he had a plan.
He lost his nerve the next day, but on Friday, he finally psyched himself up to do it. Saturday was going to be a bust, anyway; he had to work the late shift. Damn Ted for sticking him with it. Still, Friday wasn’t bad; he waited until Chie and Yukiko were out of earshot before casually tapping Souji on the shoulder. Heart racing so that he was sure Souji could hear it, he cleared his throat.
“Hey, uh. Partner. Wanna-” oh my god Hanamura stop it with the cracking voice “- wanna head into Okina? I, uh- I’d like to buy you a coffee.”
At the words “head into Okina,” Souji had already started to nod, but when Yosuke said “buy you a coffee,” his expression shifted to one of regret, and Yosuke felt his stomach plummet.
“Sorry, Yosuke. I really shouldn’t have coffee in the afternoon before a school night and- oh!” With the ‘oh’ came a look of dawning comprehension, and Yosuke - who couldn’t bear to see the next shift to discomfort - grabbed his books, standing hurriedly. He’d just mumbled something about ‘see you tomorrow’ and was turning as fast as humanly possible towards the door when a hand grabbed his wrist; he didn’t want to look back, but he couldn’t pull away, so he had no choice.
Except that somehow, miraculously, Souji looked as bashful and hopeful as Yosuke had felt thirty seconds before. As butterflies filled the brunette’s stomach, Souji swallowed.
“Matcha. They’ve got a really great matcha latte there. I’d, uh- if you’re still offering-”
Hell yeah. Feeling is face break into a grin he couldn’t hide, Yosuke nodded. “Whatever you want, partner.”
After all, a matcha-flavoured kiss would probably taste even better than coffee.

Souyowrimo Day 1
(Okay, so I’m a day behind, but I’ll try to catch up this weekend!)
1. Fancy Dress (prompt list)
Souji was late, and Yosuke was a wreck.
As the brunette glanced from the road to his phone (the screen hadn’t even gone dark from his last frantic time-check) and back again, he rubbed his neck, feeling a strange mix of disappointment, anticipation, and trepidation. Sure, it was only five minutes off the mark, but this… this was Souji. Souji was the one who was always early. Always. Hell, Yosuke started actually getting to school on time in the mornings simply by virtue of wanting to walk with his super mega crush new best friend.
Maybe Yosuke shouldn’t have pushed this shrine visit. Sure, it was New Year’s Day, sure they’d been dating for a whopping two whole months, and shrine visits were what you did when you were a couple (okay, maybe Yosuke had a list of cheesy couples things) but… maybe it wasn’t something Souji wanted to do? It wasn’t like Yosuke doubted that Souji liked him, no - they’d been pretty open about it, and everything was going great. The memories of Christmas eve still made his neck heat up, after all.
Maybe it was being together in public? It had taken Yosuke some time to get used to the idea, but he’d thought Souji was leagues ahead of him there.
A worse thought was that maybe something was wrong with Nanako. Or Dojima. He knew the two were scheduled to go back to the hospital again for a few weeks - Christmas had been a little break to be with family - but what if one of them had taken a turn for the worse? Yosuke remembered the sight of little Nanako lying pale and wan in the hospital bed and his heart clenched.
Maybe I should go by the house. Maybe I should text him? If something’s wrong I don’t want him to be stressed out, and-
Just then, he heard hurried footsteps behind him at the same time that a familiar voice gasped out, “Yosuke! I’m so sorry I’m late!” Relief washed over the brunette at the sound of his partner’s voice; when he turned, however, he found himself having to pick his jaw up from the pavement at the sight that greeted him.
It was Souji.
In a kimono.
Holy shit he looks amazing. It wasn’t like Yosuke was a slouch - he’d put on a dress shirt and his work slacks, and his coat was a new one his folks had gotten him for the winter - but it was nothing compared to Souji’s outfit. The haori was a deep blue, patterned with faint silver; everything else was grey, with the same silver pattern, and the trim reflected his eyes and everything just looked… amazing. And now Yosuke got to go make his New Year’s visit with a blushing boyfriend in a kimono. It was as if Souji had somehow managed to read Yosuke’s list of cheesy couples things (and here, the brunette made a mental note to make sure the list was somewhere Teddie couldn’t reach.)
It wasn’t until Souji rubbed his hand across the trim in a nervous gesture that Yosuke realised he’d been staring. Before his boyfriend could open his mouth, Yosuke breathed out a single word,
“Wow.”
It was enough, and Souji gave a long exhale of relief that somehow made Yosuke feel even more warm; he’d never even thought that maybe Souji actually worried about impressing him. As a smile grew across his face, his boyfriend ran a hand over his head.
“I’m glad, I was worried it might be too much, or look stupid, or-”
“Hell no.” Yosuke had to stop him here. “It looks amazing!”
This made Souji laugh, and the sound was delightful, and when he wrapped his arm through Yosuke’s, the brunette’s heart swelled with happiness. At this point, the shrine visit was just for show - he’d already gotten his luck.
It was going to be a good year.

Souyowrimo 2017 Day 6
6. Cooking (prompt list)
Souji was teaching Yosuke how to cook.
He hadn’t expected to, honestly. The brunette had always enjoyed eating his boyfriend’s cooking, and Yosuke really didn’t seem like the ‘domestic chores’ type, but that didn’t bother Souji. He enjoyed cooking, enjoyed seeing the look on his partner’s face whenever he brought bentos to school for them both, or when Yosuke came over to have dinner with Souji and Nanako. It was a surprise when Yosuke had turned to him the night before, hands fidgeting in that way that told Souji he wanted to ask “something embarrassing,” and had blurted out,
“Hey, partner. Teach me to cook!”
Although he’d been surprised, Souji hadn’t had any problems with it; he’d explained, of course, that he couldn’t just ‘teach Yosuke to cook’ in a matter of hours, but that they could work on some simple recipes that would give him a better idea of what he was doing. This seemed to be enough for the brunette, who eagerly checked his Junes schedule for the next day before planning a time to come over.
(under the cut for length)
As Souji surveyed their fridge the next morning (Yosuke had done such a good job of distracting him the night before that he’d forgotten to ask whether there was anything in particular the brunette wanted to make), he found that Nanako had gone shopping the day before, so they had the ingredients to make a handful of relatively-easy dishes that he knew Yosuke liked. Setting out some vegetables and condiments, he was just pulling out the pots and pans they’d need when Yosuke arrived.
The brunette seemed more than satisfied with Souji’s choices, and after Souji showed him how to hold a knife (contrary to Yosuke’s apparent belief, it was not the same way he held his kunai) the brunette got busy chopping potatoes, cucumbers, and carrots for potato salad. He wasn’t nearly as terrible as he’d promised he would be, and while the potatoes were boiling they moved on to kinpira gobo. Here, Yosuke had a little trouble slicing the burdock root into really thin pieces, but did well enough.
He did knock over the mirin once, and Souji couldn’t help teasing him when he got a little over enthusiastic with the mayonnaise for the potato salad; this turned into a shoving war, punctuated by giggles, and they had to take a fifteen-minute pause while they cleaned up a spilled mug of tea and pick up the pile of coupons they’d sent flying. As Souji showed Yosuke how to mash the potatoes to the right consistency, the brunette grew pensive, chewing on his lip.
“These are perfect, but… what about meat? A main dish or something.”
Looking thoughtful, Souji went over the list of ingredients they had in the fridge. Beef stew wasn’t too hard, but it took a while to cook. On the subject of beef, though…
“How about hamburger steak?” He laughed when Yosuke’s eyes lit up.
“Perfect!”
While Yosuke finished up the potato salad, Souji set out hamburger, pork, and seasonings. After washing his hands, he let the brunette add the ingredients, one by one, at his partner’s instructions. Once they were added, he told Yosuke to mix them; it was clear that the brunette wasn’t terribly fond of burying his hands in raw meat (Souji didn’t blame him), but he did it with a good will. When it came to shaping the rounds, however, Souji watched for a few minutes before shaking his head.
“Good, but not exact. Here.”
Stepping up behind Yosuke, Souji wrapped his arms around his boyfriend, putting his hand over the brunette’s; he was rewarded with a chuckle. “You’ve just been looking for an excuse, haven’t you?”
“Hmmm?” Souji focused on showing his partner how to knead the patties. “I mean, I’m not complaining, but you’re the one who wanted to learn how to cook, right? This is just a side benefit.”
“Heh. You’re right, of course. And thank you.” Yosuke leaned back for a moment, and Souji turned his head to press a kiss to the brunette’s temple.
“My pleasure.”
Eventually all of the food was finished, and it made for a tasty lunch for the two of them, as well as for Nanako. And although Souji was a little curious as to why Yosuke was suddenly asking about cooking, he didn’t think much about it until a couple of weeks later.
They’d spent the evening in the TV; things had been more than a little hectic lately, and it was late enough when they’d gotten home that Souji really didn’t want to cook. He was saved by a text from Yosuke; all it said was “yakisoba pan day tomorrow” - the brunette had an unbelievable love for the snack and they never ate bentos on those days - but it was followed by an ‘xox’, and Souji sent back a string of hearts before collapsing into bed.
The next day at lunch, he waited up on the roof for Yosuke to bring their bread up; when the brunette came out, however, he was carrying two bento boxes. Souji raised an eyebrow. “What’s this?”
Bashfully, Yosuke held one out to him without saying anything; taking it, Souji - who had a sneaking suspicion that he knew what was in it - cracked the lid to see a pile of potato salad and three slightly-lumpy hamburger rounds. With a fond smile, he looked back up at his boyfriend.
“Yosuke. Weren’t you tired last night?”
Rubbing his neck - and looking inordinately pleased - the brunette shook his head. “Nah. You’re the one that does all the heavy lifting, y’know? It’s not like any of this takes a long time. I just wanted to… I dunno. Do a little bit to help out. Since usually it’s you making food for me, and all.”
Settling himself on the roof ledge with the bento on his lap, Souji reached out to pull Yosuke close before giving his boyfriend a kiss that said what his words could not. Humming happily, the brunette leaned in against Souji’s side; he had a nervous look on his face, however, and he nodded pointedly at the box.
“You have to tell me honestly how it is… I really hope I didn’t pull a Chie…”
“I doubt you did,” Souji responded, dryly. “You learned from me, remember?” Taking the chopsticks out of the compartment on the lid, he tried first a bite of potato, then a bite of beef. The salad was a little salty, but the potatoes were the perfect consistency, and although Yosuke hadn’t gotten all of the air pockets out of the hamburger, it tasted great.
“You’re taking more than one bite, and you haven’t fallen over…” The brunette looked hopeful, and Souji laughed.
“It’s perfect. Thank you, Yosuke.”
Giving a sigh of relief, Yosuke grinned. “Any time, partner.”

Souyowrimo 2017 Day 3
Sorry this is late! I’ll be catching up over the next few days.
3. School (prompt list)
This was going to be just a couple of paragraphs but then it decided it needed to be longer. Under the cut for length.
Yosuke found school becoming a hell of a lot more interesting when Souji Seta started to attend. In the brunette’s first six months, he was usually late, used the classroom to catch up on Z’s, and skipped as often as he could without putting himself on the councilor’s radar, like Ebihara was. It wasn’t that he was a
delinquent
- not like that Tatsumi guy - but I mean, who really enjoyed class? Nobody, other than maybe Yukiko and that weird kid in 2-1 that always got top grades.
Everything changed when the transfer student arrived, though. Somehow he was so cool, and he did everything so effortlessly that Yosuke had to know what his secret was. He found himself racing to the floodplain in the mornings in the hopes he’d be early enough to catch Souji on the way to school; the first time Souji turned to him with a smile and an acknowledgement, Yosuke found himself thinking that, well… maybe school wasn’t going to be so terrible anymore, after all.
It wasn’t like the topics got any more interesting (they were always hit-or-miss with the brunette; sometimes they were cool, sometimes they were boring as hell) but somehow, seeing Souji get so into them made it easier to listen. When they studied, he always managed to explain equations and retell historical events in a way that really made it come alive for the brunette, and before he knew it midterms had come and gone and… holy shit… he’d actually passed. With a B+! Sure, Souji had gotten top marks but for Yosuke, who usually barely scraped by, it was a miracle.
It didn’t go unnoticed by their friends, either, and soon everyone - led by Rise, of course - was clamouring for Souji to tutor them, and suddenly… suddenly Yosuke didn’t feel so great. “W-wait-”
Before he could say anything else, Rise turned to him with a charming smile on her face. He could tell that she didn’t bear him any ill will, she just wanted time with “Senpai.”
As, apparently, does everyone.
“That’s no fair, Yosuke-senpai! You’ve had Senpai all spring and summer! The rest of us have other subjects and need to catch up - you should already be good to go!”
“Hey now, wait a minute. I’m sure there’s enough time-” Souji started to protest, but that made Yosuke feel even worse. It wasn’t like Rise was wrong - there was no reason Yosuke should be the only one who got to benefit from Souji’s tutoring sessions. And he had learned a lot from his partner. And it wouldn’t be fair to force Souji to divide his time amongst all of them; he’d never have time for himself.
Except. I don’t want to give him up! He’ll never have time for me!
And that was the crux of it, was’t it? School was interesting because Souji was interesting. But of course, Souji was just trying to help his friend, and Yosuke wasn’t going to be an asshole about it.
“No, it’s okay. She’s right, you know. All I need to do is keep following the tips you showed me, and listen in class, and I should be okay.” Feeling even worse, he hefted his bag onto his shoulder. “Well, I should head home. Bye, guys!”
He could see that his abrupt departure confused most of his friends - especially Rise and Souji - but he couldn’t stick around, not with this feeling stuck in his throat. Hurrying outside, he was halfway through fiddling with the lock on his bike - ugh, why does it always stick? - when he heard his name called by a very familiar voice, accompanied by the crunching sound of school shoes running across blacktop.
He looked up, because why would Souji have come after him like that? As the silver-haired honours student neared, he doubled over, hands on his knees, and Yosuke realised with a strange sensation in his stomach that Souji had run to catch up with him.
Once he’d caught his breath, Souji looked up; there was a nervous, yet determined, expression on his face. “Yosuke. I- I uh, I’m glad you got a good grade, but that- that wasn’t the only reason we hung out so much these past few months, was it?”
The idea that Souji might think that about him made Yosuke feel indignant - and a little hurt. But at the same time, the fact that he was asking gave the brunette a hope he didn’t even know he needed. With a little huff, he shook his head vehemently.
“Dude. Of course not! We’re partners, and-” He had to stop himself, because he really didn’t know what he was about to say after that, but still. Still. It seemed to be enough.
“Sorry, I just- you’ll still come to the study sessions, right? I’m sure a refresher could help, even if you already know the stuff.”
Yosuke couldn’t help feeling a little dazed at this request. Sure, he could just be concerned about my grades, but- no buts, Hanamura, what was that saying? Don’t look a gift pony in the mouth!
“Of course I’ll come, partner. I just didn’t want to put too much on you, and-”
He was interrupted as Souji shook his head, hurriedly. “No, no, I want to. And uh… well…” Here, Souji blushed, and Yosuke almost fell over his bike. Souji never blushed. Pity, because it was amazing. “Well… maybe we could also have our own study sessions? Just the two of us?”
Suddenly, the world was right again and Yosuke was on top of it. It was clear that none of this was easy for Souji - he was waiting with bated breath and clenched hands for the brunette’s response - so Yosuke decided it was time for him to take a chance, too.
“I’d really like that. We could, uh- make it a weekly thing? And if we don’t have anything to study we could just… hang out?” He rubbed his neck, trying not to look too eager, trying not to think about all of the things that “hanging out” could encompass.
It was all worth it to see Souji’s eyes light up; at that moment, Yosuke realised he couldn’t fight it anymore, even if he wanted to. He was in love with Souji. And, somehow, Souji seemed interested in him, too.
“Yeah! That sounds- well, perfect, actually. So, uh- it’s…a date?”
Yosuke couldn’t stop himself from grinning.
“Hell yeah, it’s a date!”

Souyowrimo 2017 day 8
8. Travel (prompt list)
“I’m free!” Throwing his hands up in the air, Yosuke gave an enthusiastic fist-pump as Souji, next to him, chuckled. The brunette had just finished his last shift at Junes for two weeks; Souji was out of class and Yosuke had taken some of his long-accrued time off, and they were going on a trip. Sure, it was just a local cruise - mostly around Kyushu, with some stops in South Korea (the part Yosuke was most excited about; they’d been to Okinawa, but he’d never been out of the country before) - but it was a vacation, it was a cruise, and it was with Souji.
He was pretty sure it was going to be amazing.
(under the cut for length)
Four hours into the trip, he wasn’t so sure anymore. Sitting on the bed in their cabin, he looked down at the lines of pain stretched around Souji’s mouth and frowned before reaching over to place a new wet washcloth across his boyfriend’s forehead. When he did, Souji gave him a wan frown.
“I’m sorry, partner… maybe it won’t be so bad once the meds kick in, yeah?”
While Yosuke wasn’t so sure about this - Souji was almost ready for his second dose of dramamine, the ship was sailing smoothly, and they’d already been through the usual ‘period of adjustment’ - he merely frowned at his partner, shaking his head. “Hey, now. None of that, okay? Seasickness isn’t your fault, and I’m not the one writhing in misery right now. You just rest, I’ll be right here if you need anything.”
Souji gave a weak protest at this, as Yosuke knew he would. “You should go do something, at least. I mean… it’s supposed to be a vacation, and you’ve been-”
He was interrupted by a faint sense of movement as the ship turned, probably on its way into their first port; his eyes widened at this and he curled up into a ball, gripping his stomach as he tried, so valiantly, not to get sick. And Yosuke hated it. Souji had picked this entire trip out for the two of them… but was he going to be miserable the entire time?
At least, coming into port - checking the itinerary he found that Okinawa was their first stop - Yosuke knew that Souji would be able to get some chance to rest; the ship was staying in port overnight in order to allow the vacationers to enjoy the nightlife. As they docked and the ship settled, Souji seemed to find some measure of relief; it wasn’t as good as if they’d been on dry land, but before Yosuke could suggest that they leave, his boyfriend fell into a somewhat-normal sleep, and the brunette didn’t want to disturb him.
Yosuke took this opportunity to explore the ship; they’d been shown around, of course, but once Souji had taken ill he hadn’t had eyes for anything other than his partner. Even now, he found himself wandering the game room and the gift shop with a sense of listlessness; what fun was anything without Souji next to him?
After checking back every half-hour, Yosuke finally managed to get some rice and tea into his boyfriend, who immediately went back to sleep even as he promised Yosuke that he was going to be fine and they’d go out and do things. And as much as the brunette wanted to pout, all he had to do was take one look at his boyfriend’s white face and all his complaints died.
We came here to spend time together.
Finally, he made up his mind; taking his partner’s wallet, as well as his own (and their passports), he left a scribbled note next to a pitcher of orange juice before locking their cabin door and heading out onto the island.
Souji woke before the dawn, finally feeling a little better, a little more refreshed. He hoped that his seasickness was finally gone; looking at the clock, he realised he’d already ruined almost a full day of their vacation, and he felt terrible about it. Seeing that Yosuke was still asleep, he grabbed a change of clothes and made his way, shakily, into the small bathroom to take a shower; he wasn’t halfway undressed before his hopes of finally being ‘better’ were dashed as waves from another boat’s departure sent their own bobbing, and he immediately had to grab his stomach.
Resolving to find a stronger medicine and just deal with it - he’d already wasted a day, and this was his and Yosuke’s long-awaited vacation - he took a hurried shower, finally stepping out with a towel wrapped around his waist. Not two steps from the bathroom, he stopped in confusion; Yosuke was standing next to their bed, packing his bag with the few things he’d taken out of it the day before. If Souji’s stomach hadn’t already been queasy, it would have sunk.
“Yosuke? What’s going on?”
Zipping up the bag, Yosuke looked up; somehow, his face wasn’t the mask of anger and disappointment that Souji was afraid he’d see, and instead, he gave a gentle smile.
“Hey, partner. How are you feeling?”
Souji didn’t want to admit that he was starting to feel ill again, but neither would he lie, so he quietly shook his head. “Not so great.”
“That’s okay.” The brunette pointed to the bed; following the gesture, Souji saw one of his outfits already sitting out, ready for him. “Get dressed, we’re getting off this boat.”
Getting off-? “Huh? What are you talking about, Yosuke? Isn’t it going to leave for the next port around nine?”
“Yeah, and that’s why we want to be off sooner rather than later.” Finding that Souji was still standing there, looking confused, his boyfriend came over to push him gently towards the clothes. “Do I need to dress you myself?”
“Of course not, no, but- Yosuke, what’s going on?”
When the brunette was sure that Souji was finally starting to change, he reached for a pile of papers and what looked like tickets next to their packed luggage. “I was able to get a partial refund on the cruise by transferring our reservation to one of their affiliated hotels in Okinawa. You’re not the first person who’s suffered from unexpected seasickness, you know - and even part of the price of the cruise was enough to cover the entire week here. We’re already flying out of Okinawa to go home, so it just means we’ll be able to bum around here for the week; I’m already dreaming about those pork ribs we had last time. I can’t wait!”
Yosuke had been bustling around as he talked, and Souji found himself being hustled into his clothes, even as the thought of food right now made him queasy; as the brunette’s explanation came to an end, however, Souji reached out to take his wrist, effectively stopping him mid-bustle.
“Yosuke. You were the one who wanted to go to Korea, and I know how much you were looking forward to-”
“Hey.” Turning, Yosuke reached out to poke Souji, hard, in the shoulder before softening his expression. “Look. I still want to see Korea. We’ll do that. We have time. You know what this vacation wasn’t? Something I wanted to do alone- and don’t start! You can’t help getting seasick and I don’t want you blaming yourself, okay? I want you to hang out with me and have fun and just… enjoy yourself. I certainly will. This place is gorgeous and it’s the perfect time of year.”
This didn’t stop Souji from wanting to apologise, but they’d had that kind of conversation before, and besides - he wouldn’t have blamed Yosuke if the roles had been reversed, and he just… well, he wasn’t going to argue. Wrapping an arm around his boyfriend’s waist, he pulled Yosuke in, pressing his forehead against the brunette’s.
“Okay. Thank you, Yosuke. I’ll make it up to you, okay?”
Giving Souji a quick kiss - after all, they needed to make sure they were off the ship before the gangplank came up - Yosuke grinned. “Yep. Dinner’s on you and it’s gonna be a nice one.”
Thinking about a nice meal out with his boyfriend, on dry, solid land, Souji couldn’t help but return the grin.
“Yep, dinner’s on me.”

Souyowrimo Day 2
A shorter one, just a snip and some images.
prev. days: 1
2. Picnic (prompt list)
The sun is warm and the breeze is cool as it rustles the leaves above them; it’s a perfect afternoon beneath a brilliant blue sky dotted with clouds. A blanket stretches beneath his back, and the light scratch of his partner’s uniform-covered knee is comfortable under his cheek as gentle fingers trail through his silver hair; strawberry juice stains fingers and lips, but that is a must for sticky kisses and sweet words whispered into lazy ears.
If he opens an eyelid, he’ll see the familiar shade of copper, perfectly-styled-messy-locks with a worn black band stretched across them, red earpieces resting askew so that both partners can hear the tune of a favourite song, a favourite album. The silence is loud with birds and breeze, the rush of the river, the sound of voices in the distance; it is comfortable, and there’s no need to talk, not when they understand one another so well.
Maybe they’ll head home soon, maybe they’ll stay the afternoon. Maybe they’ll head to the city to catch a movie, whispering in the back row as twined fingers herald indulgent kisses. For now, they’re content.

Souyowrimo 2017 day 7
7. Video games (prompt list)
“I’m home.”
Slipping his shoes off at the front door, Souji hung his bag and coat, then took out the schoolbooks he’d need to study that evening to carry into the living room proper. Yosuke, who was sitting under the kotatsu with a hand-held game and a huge mug of tea, leaned backwards with a smile on his face.
“Welcome home, partner. How was class?”
“Heavy, as usual.” Sitting down at the kotatsu, Souji gave a sigh of relief as he shoved his cold feet under the blanket, feeling the warmth already start to seep into them. He’d just have to get a mug of something once he’d warmed up a little - or not, as Yosuke, as usual, seemed to anticipate his need. Setting the console down, the brunette grinned, climbing out from under the heater.
“You stay there. I’ll get you some tea. Or would you rather have cocoa? Coffee?”
“Coffee, please.” Souji’s expression was grateful. “Thanks, partner. I take it they let you out of work on time?”
“Mhm.” The brunette’s voice was muffled behind the cabinet door as he pulled out a capsule for their new single-serve coffee maker, Souji’s favourite blend. “Normal day today, slow because of the snow, I think. I picked up some stuff from the corner store on the way home; I don’t know about you but I feel like eating a huge, preservative-filled container of kombini curry and rice. And I got rice crackers and pudding.”
The ‘preservative-filled’ comment was a crack at Souji, he knew, because those were the words he used whenever he talked about why he preferred to make food from scratch. That wasn’t to say he didn’t enjoy fast food once in awhile, though, and today was certainly a good day for it.
“That sounds great. Honestly, I’m not really feeling the cooking, either. I don’t even really want to study, I just kind of want to sit here and veg out. It’s just so cold.” Vasha - who was already under the kotatsu, of course, was now sitting on his lap, kneading and purring, and he was finally feeling warm again.
“Yeah, I know what you mean.” Putting the mug of coffee - made just how Souji liked it, with cream and no sugar - in front of his boyfriend, Yosuke leaned in for a kiss before taking his own seat back at the kotatsu, not opposite Souji, but just around the side, facing the TV. Souji wrapped his hands gratefully around the mug before leaning over to look at the screen of Yosuke’s game console.
“What are you playing?” Video games weren’t exactly his thing, but he knew that the brunette liked them, and he enjoyed listening to Yosuke talk about whatever new game he was playing.
“It’s the HD remaster of Twilight Princess.” Taking it off pause, Yosuke tilted the screen towards Souji; his boyfriend looked at it with mild interest, but it sharpened after a moment.
“Is that a cat?”
Yosuke blinked for a moment, then started to chuckle. “Yes, yes it is. Hang on.” Looking back at the screen, he ran around for a moment, pressed a button, and then turned the screen back to face Souji. “Doesn’t that look like Vasha?”
When Souji saw that Link (he knew enough about Zelda to at least know who its main character was) was holding a cat, his eyes lit up. “It is Vasha! You can pick up cats in this game?”
“Mhm.” It was really the first time he’d ever gotten Souji to show so much active interest in a video game, and Yosuke couldn’t help laughing. “Hang on. You think that’s cool? Wait a second.”
Souji, his hands still around his mug of coffee, watched patiently; Yosuke fiddled a bit with the game while explaining the basic concept to his boyfriend, and eventually he turned the screen back towards Souji.
“See? Wolf mode. And-”
Pushing a button, he initiated a conversation with one of the cats, and Souji’s face brightened. “That’s so cool!” Reaching out, he took the console, careful not to press any buttons, and studied it for a bit. “The graphics are really pretty. How… how hard is it to play?”
Grinning, Yosuke took it back. “Not at all, partner. Heck, I think you’d have fun. You want me to get you started? I can show you the ropes, all of the cool tips and tricks. And I mean, it’s Friday. You don’t have class again until Monday...”
Looking at his books for a moment, Souji chewed his lip, then smiled at the brunette before sliding around the kotatsu to sit next to the brunette. “Yeah. Let’s play video games today.”
“You got it, partner.” Wrapping an arm around Souji’s waist, Yosuke put the console back into his boyfriend’s hands and started to explain what the different buttons did.
