Souyowrimo 2017 Day 11
So, these are going to spill over into December but I am going to write them all.
11. Confession (prompt list)
Nervously, Souji looked at the clock. It really was time - if he waited any longer, he might not be able to catch Yosuke before everyone else showed up. But- but it was so hard to gather up the courage! He could already see the look on his partner’s face, hear the change in his voice. Is he even going to want to talk to me again after this?
It terrified him.
He couldn’t not tell him, though. Souji knew that he owed it to his partner to be honest. So he gathered up his courage, cleared his throat, had a drink of water, chastised himself for killing time, and headed upstairs.
Opening the door to the roof, he could see Yosuke sitting in the sunshine - always his first spot after a long day, and of course, Souji always joined him. The brunette was smiling and humming, and for a brief moment Souji had a thought that maybe it’s going to go okay, and this isn’t going to put a wrench in our relationship.
I don’t have to tell him.
But in the end, he did. He’d never kept a secret from Yosuke, and he wasn’t going to start. Even as it made things twenty times harder when Yosuke looked up at him with that bright, sunny smile, Souji’s resolve only faintly wavered. Walking over, he took a seat next to the brunette.
“Yosuke, I- I have to tell you something.”
His partner’s expression shifted a little, and Souji could already feel his palms start to sweat; rubbing them nervously on his pants legs, he took a deep breath.
“I’m- I ate the pudding cake you bought for Nanako’s birthday, I tried to get a new one but they were all out, I’m so sorry, Yosuke, so sorry, it was a long day at class, and I came home late and tired and hungry and you were on night shift and I didn’t see your note until I’d already eaten half of it and I-” Here, he blushed with embarrassment. “-well, I thought you’d gotten it for me, and I know I was an idiot, and-”
What stopped him wasn’t a look of anger or disgust, it was the sound of his fiancé’s laughter. At the sound of a crinkling bag, Souji looked over to see Yosuke holding up a Junes bag, through which he could see two pudding cake boxes. When he looked up, meaning to ask how Yosuke knew, he was stunned silent by his partner’s dancing eyes and breathtaking smile.
“I know, partner, and to be fair, I wanted to get you one, too - but they only had one. So I made sure to grab two as soon as they restocked.” Smirking, he pulled one box out, opening it as he took out a convenience store plastic spoon. Scooping into the cake (the glistening caramel colour was so enticing and the sponge layer so perfectly round that Souji couldn’t help but be enraptured), Yosuke held the spoon out towards Souji. “This one is for you. Well, for us.”
Tearing his eyes from the cake, Souji leaned forward and took the bite, and it was amazing. The sweetness rolled down his tongue, but the smile on Yosuke’s face was better, and after he’d finished savouring his treat, he leaned forward.
“You really are something,” he murmured, meeting the brunette’s smile with one of his own before pulling Yosuke into a kiss that was a thousand times sweeter than the cake.
“Mmmm, well, I enjoy spoiling both you and Nanako, so what can I say?” After a few more minutes and kisses, however, the brunette pulled back with a sigh. “Okay, we need to go make sure her presents are wrapped; she and Dojima should be by soon, you know, and after that all we need to do is wait for Rise and Naoto to come by with dinner.”
To be honest, between Yosuke and the cake, Souji really didn’t want to ‘take a break’ right now - but it was Nanako’s birthday, and the thought of the smile on her face when she saw her cake, and presents (and big bro, and Yosuke-nii, and Rise-chan and Naoto-nii) was more than enough consolation. Also, Rise had said she’d be picking up fried chicken, and that was the kind of treat the partners didn’t often allow themselves, not since Souji liked to cook so much.
Besides, that pudding cake was his (well, theirs). They’d have time to pick up where they’d left off later.
