I have a proper derby bruise!!!
So training on thursday night was intense... I went along to an advanced session (now that us freshies are allowed to) and there were only two other freshies there with me. So the session coach decided it was time we had a go at scrimmaging... OMG!
I have been wanting to get stuck into this part for ages.
Yes, it was scary!
Yes, I came home feeling a bit bruised and battered!
And yes, I loved every minute of it!!!!
I'm fully aware I was probably a pain in the ass as I didn't know what the hell I was doing but the big girls took me under their wing and told me what to do. Kinda felt like I was back at primary school or something.
Eventually I started to get it, and actually tried stopping people which resulted in some great falls... of mine. I have a lovely purple bruise as a trophy of my efforts, its' made me stupidly happy :D

The End Is Nigh.... But We Will Be Champions.
Apparently it's soon to be the end of the world, so I thought I should really do an update on the bout on Saturday and my Christmas shopper filled week.
Firstly I have to say that if the end of the world really is around the corner then I will be highly unimpressed that my last week on this world was spent dealing with Christmas shoppers! It's safe to say that working in retail really does drain away any Christmas spirit you have, although if we do survive the next 24 hours then I have 5 lovely days off!!! Yay!
Anywho, my week started on a high as on saturday I went along to support the girls at their next match as part of the SW:UK derby season. Having previously beaten Dorset Roller Girls and Wiltshire Roller Derby wanted to stay undefeated, however, Plymouth City Roller Girls are our toughest competition in this little league so we all knew this was the match to watch... and oh my god was it a tense match!!!
PCRG knew they were in for a tough match too and there was no taking it easy at the beginning, both teams went in full pelt from the first whistle! The first half was incredibly close, with each team taking it in turns to lead. It didn't help that the score board wasn't working properly so nobody knew who was winning but the refs for most of it. But both teams had a cracking half, and in the last 2 minutes of the first half SWAT managed to get themselves back into the lead after only just conceding that position to PCRG. At the half time whistle SWAT lead by 85 to PCRG's 82!
The second half was even more intense, especially as there were a lot of odd calls by the refs and in one case a blatant ignorance of a major foul which resulted in SWAT conceding a few points. But after a brief(ish) display of annoyance they held their heads high and continued with some excellent game play! Flash Bo-Dash had her jammer début and played amazingly, she went on to win the Best Jammer Award, so go her!!! She was so nippy and I think her little superhero mask was helping her through. Insane Bolt was, as always, the fastest player on the track and I'm pretty certain that PCRG was getting more than a little irritated with her. Mummy and Daddy Bolt had their foam arms flying all over the place in support of her. She went on to win Most Valued Player, and Miss Hiplash won Best Blocker (I think :S). Dot Slash and Nurse A Grudge win an unofficial award for Jammer's Spending Most Time In The Penalty Box! Anywho, got sidetracked. The final moments of the second half were just as intense as the first half, with no-one knowing the exact score we knew we were leading after the penultimate jam, so Insane Bolt worked her time wasting magic by jumping into lead jammer status and then just annoying the hell out of PCRG's jammer by not letting her catch up to the pack. It worked a treat and Insane Bolt also squeezed an extra couple of points out of PCRG, making the final score...... SWAT 156 and PCRG 135. Hooray!!!!!
It was the most incredible game and it means that SWAT are still undefeated!
Next up is the bout in Feb at home against Kernow Rollers. That'll be a fun one! Although SWAT may be doing some serious swatting.. get it? Of the opposition...  Oh dear. I'll sign off after that awful pun.
See you around x

Dancing Angels and Kicking Butt!
So today I attended my first live bout in support of my new team (S.W.A.T) and it was awesome!
Plymouth City Roller Girls hosted the first heat of the South West 2012:13 League today, which consisted of 2 fantastic bouts featuring 4 feisty teams.
The Southwest Angels of Terror vs Dorset Roller Girls
Plymouth City Roller Girls vs Wiltshire Roller Girls
-
The first bout was the one I was there to watch, and I very nearly didn’t make it. On the drive there my car decided that it had had enough of its current exhaust, snapped it in two and forced me to take an hour detour while I got it replaced. Kwikfit really proved the suitability of their name today!
The awesome (I am a little bit biased) Angels of Terror looked hot in their shiny purple pants and green tops, and showed their prowess even during their warm up with the most structured and professional display of skills there today. Captain Nurse A. Grudge and Vice Captain Danger S. Mouse are obviously not only great leaders but fun and respected to boot… They also seemed to be keen dancers! Watching the Angels having a dance while the opposition were trying to warm up made everyone smile!!!!
The bout started as it meant to go on, with power, structure and an intense desire to win! Dorset seemed to be on their guard from the very beginning, after overhearing some of the Plymouth girls in the toilet I think all the other teams see S.W.A.T as the hardest challenege to beat. S.W.A.T took lead jammer status for the first three jams, and when Nurse. A Grudge managed to score 25 points in one jam Dorset realised they had to do something desperate. From the fourth jam Dorset managed to gain a few points but S.W.A.T stole the show. Insane Bolt, Mine’za Cider, Miss Hiplash, Nurse A. Grudge and Dot Slash took no prisoners as they sped through and managed to score over 150 points by half time. There was some fantastic blocker action from the rest of the team including debut performances from Whoops-a-Daisy and BillaBANG who only started with S.W.A.T in April!
In the second half Dorset struggled to keep up with the immovable Mine’za Cider, who seemed to have only one thing in mind… a cider maybe? No matter how hard they tried to take her down, she wouldn’t fall! The Dorset jammers had the speed and skills there but couldn’t pass the blockers however hard they tried. Block Beauty, Cherry Whips, Danger S. Mouse, Fanny Havoc, Kat CurVicious, Rollo Cop and Vampira were all forces to be contended with! The S.W.A.T girls kept up their game until the very end, and no matter hard Dorset tried S.W.A.T were victorious scoring a massive 300 to Dorset’s 44.
In my opinion the Angel of the match was Insane Bolt. I don’t envy the jammers that had to deal with her taunting! I know this was my first live bout but I did not expect to see our jammer skating so close to the opposition just to annoy her, it was obviuosly working too. They were practically hugging!
-
After a quick turn around it was time for the second bout. Plymouth and Wiltshire started off a little bit slower, but it didn’t take long for Plymouth’s aggression to surface causing Wiltshire to also fire into action. Plymouth had a lot of home supporters and whenever they achieved lead jammer there was a chorus of cheers, no doubt causing distraction to the Wiltshire girls. Both teams played well with the first half ending with only a dozen points separating the scores.
Once the girls had had a quick break, gulped down a ton of water and re-adjusted their hotpants it was time to continue. The second half was quite a bit speedier, with both teams keen to excel and win those needed points. There was a lot of shoving, quite a few people went down and unlike the first bout there seemed to be quite a bit of rolling around on the floor! Wiltshire’s stamina started to flag whereas Plymouth just seemed to get stronger by the second. In the end it was their strength that won through as they scored 255 to Wilsthire’s 103.
-
Overall it was a fantastic day and everyone seemed to really enjoy themselves, what also made me smile was the fact that the day was very much a family event and suitable for all. It was great to see that so many of the skaters had parents, siblings and various other family members there to support them. It was also great having the stands for each of the teams and for Roller Derby City merch company; I bought myself two t-shirts to show my derby love, and fully intend to buy a varsity jacket once I’ve passed min skills.
I loved every second of the day and I cannot wait to get on my skates tomorrow evening for our Night of the Skating Dead Roller Disco! Hopefully soon enough I’ll be skating alongside the team on the track too.
Thanks to Plymouth City Roller Girls for hosting the first heat! Also, thanks to the refs and NSO’s; without them the bouts couldn’t have gone ahead. Especially to Head Ref TeeHee, who is one of ours!
