"...A MIXTURE OF SIOUXSIE-LIKE STOMP, THE BOUNCE OF ADAM ANT, AND THE SCEPTICISM OF CRASS."
PIC(S) INFO: Mega spotlight on assorted behind-the-scenes shots of British post-punk/gothic rock band SOUTHERN DEATH CULT, c. 1982. 📸: Jasper James.
"Despite calling their music “positive punk,” SOUTHERN DEATH CULT were beautifully bleak. Their music was weaved with a mixture of SIOUXSIE-like stomp, the bounce of ADAM ANT, and the skepticism of CRASS. While only officially releasing a one off single and posthumous LP, SDC toured with Bauhaus in 1982 and had two television appearances (The Tube and Whatever You Didn’t Get). Albeit under documented and overshadowed by singer Ian Astbury’s later career in The Cult (with Billy Duffy of Theatre of Hate), the band built a mystique that remains today."

PART II: "However, UK photographer Jasper James @jasperjamesphotography was one of the few who did manage to document the band in 1982. Here he shares several candid shots of SOUTHERN DEATH CULT and explains how they came to be:
"I met the band early in 1982 when they were on tour with THEATRE OF HATE in the UK. I became friends with them and used to regularly go and see their gigs and also visit Bradford and stay at Ian Astbury’s place. At that time Bradford had a vibrant gig and club scene going on. I found the photos in a box at my parents place years after the band had split up and I don’t recall taking them or being interested in photography at the time.
I was 16 years old in 1982 and enjoyed the music and subculture of post-punk at that time in the UK. There was a whole scene of bands like SOUTHERN DEATH CULT, BAUHAUS and THEATRE OF HATE, among others and a whole group of us would wander around the UK following the bands. Looking at the photos of that period is interesting as I don’t recall carrying a camera around much.
It must have been my parents small point and shoot camera that I borrowed occasionally. At that time in the early ‘80s when I was a teenager it was rare for any of us to photograph what we were doing, so consequently photos of that scene, backstage, sound checks, etc are pretty rare. A couple of years ago Ian Astbury was working on a book documenting SDC and contacted me to use the photos and mentioned that they didn’t have much imagery around the band’s history."

Post-Punk Goth Bands
The post-punk goth movement, with its dark aesthetic and introspective lyrics, might not be the first thing that comes to mind when one thinks of peace. Yet, beneath the brooding surface, many goth bands have explored themes of tranquility, solace, and personal peace. This article delves into the depths of the genre to uncover how these bands relate to the concept of peace, each in their unique…

Death Cult Find Sanctuary in Glasgow
Glasgow is a spiritual home for Ian Astbury and the Barrowland Ballroom has been the scene for many special performances for nearly 40 years. The evolution of one of the biggest rock bands to grace some of the biggest stages in the world was relatively short but spurned two inspirational bands. The Cult were borne out of the short lived Death Cult which of course was derived from Southern Death…
