SPIDER INCOMING
YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED
Poecilotheria metallica
(the peacock spider)
This lovely guy!!
The peacock tarantula is a Critically endangered species that lives in the deciduous forest in central southern India! The venom of this guy can cause intense pain, but there are no record of someone passing from the venom. due to its occurrence in only one small area in which habitat is rapidly degrading due to logging and firewood harvesting. Month of Saiyuki (day 20)
The Saiyuki boys are in the zombie apocalypse. Who would live the longest?
Despite his human nature, Sanzo is more than able to survive such apocalypse, he also has hunting skills:
Hakkai is another good candidate to live the longest, he can take advantage of the environment, he can heal and is able to survive in the woods:
Goku might have some difficulties but overall he would manage to make it through. If he becomes Seiten Taisei zombies shall pray to survive.
Sorry Gojyo, good fighting skills but he has also a very delicate stomach and seems to prefer a refined lifestyle. With the help of others he can manage to survive.
And now a moment of nerding XD (sorry for long post)
Since I love to analyse things from small details and in this particular case I love to speculate where Sanzo Ikkou is, I've noticed two elements that might give me info about the location. A good indicator is given by Hakkai when he mentions the caterpillar fungus (Ophiocordyceps sinensis). While trying to restrict the areal distribution of this fungus I found this article A survey of the geographic distribution of Ophiocordyceps sinensis by Yi Li , Xiao-Liang Wang, Lei Jiao, Yi Jiang, Hui Li, Si-Ping Jiang, Ngarong Lhosumtseiring, Shen-Zhan Fu, Cai-Hong Dong, Yu Zhan, Yi-Jian Yao. As the title says this study tries to identify the geographic distribution of this fungus used in Tradition Chinese medicine, and I found this map:
This is the link to the original study, but if you want to the entire pdf, there it is: https://docslib.org/doc/11833369/a-survey-of-the-geographic-distribution-of-ophiocordyceps-sinensis
Like the abstract states the fungus can be found in the Tibetan Plateau and its surrounding regions, including Tibet, Gansu, Qinghai, Sichuan, and Yunnan provinces in China and in certain areas of the southern flank of the Himalayas, in the countries of Bhutan, India and Nepal and it is mainly found in the meadows above 3,500 metres.
Another key element that makes me think they might be between Tibetan Plateau and Bhutan is the lagomorph Sanzo is holding by the ears. The possible candidates are: Indian hare (Lepus nigricollis), Woolly hare (Lepus oiostolus) and Hispid hare (Caprolagus hispidus). I immediately rule out the hispid hare because its ears are very short and do not project beyond the fur. The Indian hare is not present in the Tibetan Plateau despite being present in southern part of Bhutan:
Indian Hare area.png by Chermundy, 14 December 2010, is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 Unported license. Attribution: IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, species assessors and the authors of the spatial data.
So the most likely candidate is the woolly hare whose distribution is:
Woolly Hare area.png by Chermundy, 14 December 2010, is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 Unported license. Attribution: IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, species assessors and the authors of the spatial data.
If you want to know more about this hare species here a nice link:
As for the even-toed ungulate we can see, it's a bit difficult a possible identification. The animal might be a member of Cervidae family, maybe an Indian muntjac (Muntiacus muntjak) but yeah without a full picture of the head and antlers it's just a speculation.
Sooooo all of this just to say they are most likely between Tibet and Bhutan XD. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk. In future I want to talk more about the caterpillar fungus mentioned in these pages. There's a lot to say about this fella.

California Landslide Evacuations
This photo shot with a drone shows damage from earth movement to a property in Rolling Hills Estates, Calif. Monday, July 10, 2023. The homes in the Los Angeles C...
The Associated Press
ROLLING HILLS ESTATES, Calif. -- A landslide tore apart luxury homes on Southern California's Palos Verdes Peninsula on Monday, leaving a confused jumble of collapsed roofs, shattered walls, tilted chimneys and decks dangling over an adjacent canyon.
The slide in the Los Angeles County city of Rolling Hills Estates began Saturday when cracks began appearing in structures and the ground. Twelve homes were red-tagged as unsafe, and residents were given just 20 minutes to evacuate.
The pace of destruction increased through the weekend and into Monday.
“It is moving quickly,” said Janice Hahn, chair of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, who represents the area. “You can actually hear the snap, crackle and pop every minute when you're there as each home is shifting, is moving.”
It was initially believed that all of the red-tagged homes were sliding, but Assistant City Manager Alexa Davis clarified Monday afternoon that 10 were actively moving. An additional 16 were being monitored but had not required evacuation, Davis said in an email.
The cause of the landslide was not known. But a fissure running among the homes raised suspicion that this past winter's heavy rains may be involved, Hahn said.
“We won't know until a geologist and a soil expert really does a post-op on this and tells us what happened,” Hahn said. “But because of that fissure, the initial thinking is that it was because of the heavy rains that we had last year and all that underground water has caused this. But we don't know.”
Hahn said many of the displaced residents were unsure whether they were insured for such loss, including one who moved in two months ago after escrow closed. The county assessor was to meet with the residents to tell them they could apply for property tax waivers.
“My heart goes out to these people," Hahn said. "We gave them 20 minutes Saturday night to evacuate and get their things. Obviously they didn't get everything.”
Damaging landslides have occurred previously on the Palos Verdes Peninsula, which rises high above the Pacific on the county's south coast and offers residents spectacular views of the ocean and greater Los Angeles.
A landslide that began in 1956 destroyed 140 homes in the Portuguese Bend area of the city of Rancho Palos Verdes, and earth continues to move there. The slide coincided with construction of a road through the area, which is atop an ancient landslide.
Among other notable earth movements on the peninsula, a 2011 slide severed the blufftop ocean road near White Point in the San Pedro section of Los Angeles several months after engineers began noticing cracks and fenced off the area for study.
Southern California's complex landscapes contribute to landslides, according to an overview by the U.S. Geological Survey in conjunction with the California Geological Survey.
Some of the many potential factors include earthquakes, steep slopes, sedimentary soil that is not rock hard, and water percolating down into the earth after heavy rains, the report says.
Human-induced landslide factors include construction without proper grading of slopes, alteration of drainage patterns and disturbances of old landslides.
Well, this instability has been a thing that virtually everyone has known all about for well over sixty years. So my heart doesn’t exactly go out towards those affected, in fact I would go so far as to say that there are really no victims here. Folks have known all about this while they were buying and selling homes, repairing homes, compensating for the movement by building water and sewer lines above the ground and constantly rebuilding roads. This latest drama on Portuguese Bend in Rolling Hills isn’t a life threatening natural disaster, this is just bad public policy and rich people’s problems. They chose to live there knowing the facts, and they really should not feel entitled to public money, or even insurance. Evidently they have an excellent press agent, because few of the recent articles and video clips tell the whole story. The LA times did a feature in March 2023 that you might want to look up if you think I’m being unfair.

Relocating to Charlotte, North Carolina
In light of registration information, around 70 individuals each day move to Charlotte. From our trees to our Southern cordiality, there's an unexpected surprise here that addresses everybody.
Moving families could perceive you they love the developing position market, minimal expense of living and four-season environment, or the scope of neighborhoods from metropolitan to rustic, in addition to great public and non-public schools.
Individuals from Charlotte's expanding imaginative class might let you know that they love the out of control around neighborhoods like No-Da, unrecorded music scenes like the Music Manufacturing plant, Neighborhood Theater and the Twofold Entryway, our vicinity to the mountains and sea shores, as well as admittance to an astounding exhibit of open air exercises.
Retired people could make reference to our bountiful houses of worship, the profoundly regarded medical services framework, Charlotte's numerous historical centers and social open doors, as well as one of the country's best air terminals to get their grandkids here for a little while.
Entrepreneurs would likely call attention to Charlotte's accomplished, useful labor force, our versatile, expanded economy, great transportation framework, and our dynamic Charlotte Office of Trade that incorporates them into the Charlotte business scene.
All valid justifications certainly. As a local whose family has been here starting around 1751, my considerations on why Charlotte is an extraordinary spot to live may vary from the newbie's. I love Charlotte for its kin.
The region was first settled by ground breaking, hopeful, dedicated and inviting society. Strict and exceptionally free individuals with a magnanimous twisted formed this town and locale. Their fingerprints stay on our aggregate spirits.
As I would see it, two of Charlotte's intangibles are the best things about our town.
In the first place, is our can-do soul. From the hour of the primary European pioneers to the locale, Charlotte has been a town based on trade and continuously searching for a benefit.
Since Charlotte had no traversable waterway close by, Assessor Thomas Polk fabricated his home in 1755 at the crossing point of two Indian exchanging ways to exploit the trade they guaranteed. That junction today is Exchange and Tryon - otherwise called The Square - quite possibly of the most active crossing point in the state.
The country's most memorable dash for unheard of wealth began in our area in 1799. Pioneers effectively handled a US Mint to mint coins, and this gave catalyst to the later improvement of our financial industry.
Next is our set of experiences of offering in return. That beginnings with the congregation. Scots-Irish Presbyterians initially settled the region, laying out six chapels spread generally all through the area. Our altruistic nature is driven by this.

[Brief biographies of descendants of 3rd and 4th century Tuoba rulers. From WS014.]
The Duke of Shanggu, Heluo, was a great-grandson of August Emperor Shenyuan. Earlier, he accompanied Taizu from the Dugu to go to the Helan section. He summoned and assembled the old households, and obtained 300 families. He and his younger brother Jian discussed and urged He Na to push forward Taizu as the ruler. When Taizu climbed to the rank of King, Heluo regularly sheltered left and right. He also accompanied to campaign and attack, and had great merit. The Marquis of Zhending, Lu, was a descendant of August Emperor Shenyuan. At the time of Shizu, he was, due to his martial merit, quite faced with gracious fortune. He was designated Cavalier in Regular Attendance and bestowed feudal rank of Marquis of Zhending. He passed on.
Lu's great grandson Gui, courtesy name Faji, bit by bit moved to Prefect of Luoyang. At the time Under Heaven had many affairs. Gui in particular used deep severity in handling subordinates, the deaths were many and his brutality excessive. Those understood considered him wrong. In the time of Xiaojing, when the Ye palace was created and regulated, used Gui as the envoy for laying out the structure. He was appointed Inspector of Xu province. Gui's manners and prestige were already in low regard, and he also had no learning or skill. Altough he successively had fame and rank, at the time people made light of him. He passed on in the province.
The Marquis of Wuling, Yin, was a descendant of Emperor Zhang. He accompanied Taizu to pacify the Central Plains, and due to his merits was ennobled Marquis of Quni. In the time of Shizu, changed his feudal rank to Wuling.

He passed on.
The Marquis of Quyang, Suyan, was a descendant of Emperor Huan. Accordingly as young he successively accompanied Taziu to campaign against and chastise the various commanderies. When first settled Bing province, he became Inspector. At the ambush of Taizu at Baisi, the Bing province defence general Feng Douzhen became disobedient. Suyan beheaded him. At the time Taizu's opinion and wishes was to console and please the new adherents, and regretted the executions of Canhe. Yet Suyan's killings and massacres were beyond extreme. He was convicted and dismissed from office.
When Zhongshan was pacified, he was designated Inspector of You province. He was wasteful, profligate and extravagantly uninhibited, and was moved left to Grand Warden of Shanggu. Later he was bestowed the feudal rank of Marquis of Quyang.
At the time Taizu kept in his heart Huang-Lao, and wished to use pure manners to reform customs. Even for the Driving Chariot's robes and carriages, he always got rid of the engraved and ornamented, and always set ahead material frugality. Yet Suyan's profligate luxuriance went beyond the standards. Taizu very much clenched his teeth about it, and stored up his excesses. Following that, he was summoned, convicted and bestowed death.
The Duke of Shunyang, Yu, was a descendant of Emperor Huan. As young he was loyal, correct, inflexible and straight. He began as Palace Gentleman of the Feathered Forest and was praised for his assiduous ability. In the time of Gaozong he ranked as Master of Writing Within the Hall. He accompanied Gaozong on the eastern tour to overlook the sea, and for his service was bestowed feudal rank as Duke of Shunyang.
When Gaozong collapsed, Yi Hun monopolized power, he separated and cut off inside from outside. The hundred officials shook in fear, they determined they had nowhere to set out. Yu led the guards and soldiers within the halls, several hundred people, to enter by way of the Shunde Gate, wishing to execute Hun. Hun was afraid, he confronted [those?] setting out, and asked Yu, saying:
What is the purpose of you Lord entering?
Yu said:
Not seeing the Son of Heaven, the crowd of subjects are anxious and afraid, and seek to see the Ruler and Sovereign.
Hun, put upon and in terror, spoke to Yu, saying:
Now the Great Agent [i.e. the late Emperor] is encoffined, and the Son of Heaven is in true privacy. For that reason he has not yet associated with the hundred officials. Why would the various commanderies be suspicious?
Thereupon he received Xianzu to preside over court. Later Hun calculated in his hear to make chaos, and the court subjects were looking sideways. Yu again planned to kill Hun, and was killed by Hun. Xianzu took note of Yu's loyalty and correctness, and retroactively conferred on him King of Shunyang, his posthumous title was Simple [jian].
The King of Yidu, Muchen, was a descendant of Emperor Huan. He began as Gentleman of the Feathered Forest, and accompanied Shizu on the southern offensive reaching the Jiang. [The text reads “Taizu” but this has to be an error.]
When Gaozong acceded to the throne, he due to his accumulated service moved to Palace Attendant and Supervisor of the Left of the Masters of Writing, ennobled Duke of Nanping. During when Yi Hun was planning chaos, Muchen discussed his wish to kill Hun with his older brother [the Duke of Shunyang] Yu. The affair leaked, and they were to be executed, Muchen escaped into hiding and managed to get away. When Xianzu passed on the throne, he had achievements in settling the strategy.
When Gaozu acceded to the throne, he moved to Minister over the Masses, and was appointed Inspector of Yong province, to garrison Chang'an. Muchen was by nature inflexible, straight, and of steadfast integrity, and did not form factions. The court subjects all together feared him. However he was fond of wealth and profit; when he was in the province, government hence was full of bribery. He committed a crime and submitted to the law. The feudal rank was abolished.
Emperor Mu's oldest son Liuxiu as young was yet fiendish and disobedient. Emperor Mu's 5th Year [312 AD], he dispatched Liuxiu to be the vanguard, he and Assistant Assessors Wei Xiong and Fan Ban, and Ji Dan and others were to rescue Liu Kun. The Emperor personally commanded the greater troops as rear support. Liu Can was afraid, set fire to and burnt his supply wagons, broke through the siege, escaped and fled. They let lose the cavalry to pursue him, and killed and wounded a considerable multitude. The Emperor following that had a great hunt at Shouyang Mountain. They exhibited and reviewed the hides and meat, the mountain was altered red. When Emperor Huai of Jin was seized by Liu Cong, Emperor Mu dispatched Liuxiu and Emperor Huan's son Pugen to lead spirited cavalry to aid Liu Kun.
Earlier, Emperor Mu's youngest son Biyan gained favour, and he wished to use him as the successor. Liuxiu set out to reside at the Xinpingcheng, and demoted his mother. Liuxiu had a superlative steed, an exceptional horse which could travel 500 li in a day. Emperor Mu wished to take it so he could give it to Biyan.
Later Liuxiu came to court. Emperor Mu again instructed him to do obeisance to Biyan. Liuxiu did not follow. Emperor Mu therefore seated Biyan to ride as himself in his walking palanquin, and sent people to guide and accompanying him setting out on a progression. Liuxiu looked and saw it, and considered it to be Emperor Mu, he paid his respects crouching on the left side of the road. When it arrived, and it was actually Biyan, he was humiliated and angry, and left. They summoned him, but he did not turn back.
Emperor Mu was angry, and led the multitudes to invade him. The Emperor's army did not profit, and Liuxiu killed Biyan. The Emperor changed clothes to travel unnoticed among the people. There was a worthless matron who recognized the Emperor, and he thereupon violently collapsed.
Pugen had previously defended against the outside, he heard of the difficulties, and led the multitudes to come attend. He attacked Liuxiu and wiped him out.
The Baron of Jiyang, Bigan, was Taizu's junior kinsman. As Minister Overseer of Guards, he chastised the Baijian Dingling and had merit. He was bestowed the feudal rank of Baron of Jiyang. Later he became Commandant Commander of the Southern Circuit and was lost in battle.
The Duke of Jiangxia, Lü, was Taizu's junior kinsman. He accompanied Shizu to pacify Liang province and had merit, he was ennobled Duke of Jiangxia, and ranked as Great Official of the Outer Capital. He was entrusted with court and government affairs, and was greatly honoured and valued. He passed on and was conferred King of Jiangxia, andan accompanying burial at Jinling.

June 4, 2020: 2:58 pm:
Neighborhood assessment: I took a walk to the maiboxes on Jackpine after making a few shorter walks around my yard. Four pieces of mail:
One notice from Mojave County Arizona Tax Assessor, they keep sending a bill for property that was owned by a relative who died in 2010. I get the bill about four times per year. I never told the Mojave County Arizona Tax Assessor my name or address.
One advertising newspaper called “Sneak Peak”. It’s a terror tool. Any mention of the words “Sneak Peak” are recorded when the recipient has been fitted with a implanted microphone transmitter, like I have been, and the recordings are used to create a “peeping tom” or “Stalker” framework that is used by impostor police to capture and kill more US Citizens. It’s complicated. The Sneak Peak is only a small part of that kind of framework. There was a Progressive insurance advertisement. One medical bill from a place called “Premier Medical Billing Services”. It’s part of the #SAGClubMed terror cell at Pain Specialists of Southern Oregon. The billing for Pain Specialists is done in house, at the Medford facility, this new billing arrangement through Premier, is designed to provide a way for terror ops of ClubMed to make contact, and, it also is for making confusion service, so that investigative people won’t see the real billing that should be coming from the Medford office where Pain Specialists of Southern Oregon is physically located. Again, it’s complicated, and is manipulative, for leading investigative people into traps. ========================
It’s quiet outside. Look on Twitter to find the commands to the terror army for making “silence”. Silence is pretty much all the sound that is present on a fine spring day, in the middle, and early parts of the day.
There was one small airplane fly over, dumping a load of nitrous oxide over the area, over my home and yard. It’s was a wing under fuselage design, white, with black painted rudder and stabilizer. The airplane flew over at about 1000 -1200 feet altitude, and was going North, at about 2:45 pm.
That airplane, is part of a special group of pilots within the terror airforce that is called “Air Support”. The black painted tail section airplane, is part of a two pilot team, the other pilot has a white airplane, wing under fuselage, with the main wings painted black. The planes that have black paint on them, such as a few that have “Black Wingtips” are part of a ground crew operation terror cell. They are marked with black paint on the rocker cover area on their vehicles. The area under the doors of the car between the front and rear wheels, is the rocker cover area of the car. I call them the “Black Wingtips” and “Rocker Covers” when I need to think about them for safety.
There was an attack to kill me that went bad while I was walking to the mailbox. The Monroe terror cell used the cameras that are at the offensive surveillance trailer, to announce that I was in position, and that announcement was further announced visually, without need for spoken words by Monroe telling Wesely Crowel to drive his truck down Jackpine at that time, thereby informing all involved the Wesley rolled by, so, that means the mark is in position for the hit to take place. I don’t know what means were used to get Wesley moving down the road. There was a gas wielding assassin in the nearby woods in my yard, and another in the yard at Monroe’s near the pond they have there. The one in my yard was ignited, and launched away of nitrous tank ignition, at the same time as the black tail airplane was flying overhead.
All of this happened quickly, and invisibly, such that no one would ever know that any of that happened, if they were not paying specific attention to that small area around the pond at Monroe’s, and the gate area of my driveway. The idea is that they need to get close enough to me to shoot me with the cross-bow, not be seen, and have enough nitrous in the air that I won’t care about noises I hear, and will let down my guard, and be affected by the gas such that I might stumble. Also, the nitrous prevents a person from feeling pain when stricken with objects, therefore the gas works as a “Silencer” by preventing people from screaming when they are hurt.
Terror soldiers at the Chapman terror cell at 3701 Russell road were in position there to get a visual of my condition as I returned from the mailbox. There was a very large white commercial truck there, and a man wearing a green shirt and denim pants that I could see, plus the driver of the large white truck. The large white truck was also silent, and made no sounds that I could hear from 500 feet away.
There is no signs of helpful people anywhere. Please send help to Josephine County Oregon.
End terror attack report: 3:36 pm.

Bibliothèque Infernale presents:
HOW ELEVEN CHINESE DEVOURED THEIR BRIDE (1926) —A grotesque, infamous short story by HANNS HEINZ EWERS
This is a story about sodomy and bestiality. Most people don’t understand such things and don’t like them. That’s all right, but, if you were born a Tartar there would be no question that sodomite stories are always very funny.
If a case comes before the court, the Judge, Public Prosecutor, clerk, Lawyer and curiously even the Justice of the Peace all see the humor in it. Only the public can’t see the humor. It is out of the question because the morality of the Public must not be endangered in any way.
So enjoy this mild story of our black gowned family. Naturally it is a light hearted story that will not seduce anyone into sodomy or bestiality. Especially when he sees how this abomination can get a poor devil stuck into prison for a couple years just for a small bit of pleasure.
That is still mild and humane says the Law. Things were not always so light. We read that our dear God rained both pitch and brimstone on the contaminated cities of Sodom and Gomorrah destroying them to the ground.
Only the noble Lot and his daughters were spared. His wife was turned into a naked pillar of salt simply because she once turned to look back toward these abominable cities.
Now the Lot family was not completely morally strong all the time. The behavior of the God fearing family was such that the one and only God sent angels to deliver them from this decline into abomination. How their countrymen desired these messengers and wanted to go out with them! Lot got them drunk and pleaded with them to take his daughters and use their blessed wombs instead!
How do you say, they looked pretty only after you had a few drinks?
Nevertheless this is a funny enough story in spite of all the pitch and brimstone. Funny too are the sodomite abominations in our time.
Yet they have been horribly punished. Sodomites have been crucified, quartered, drowned, broken on the wheel, burned at the stake and still they exist in all parts of the world. The weed of sodomy and bestiality is constantly new and blooming over the entire world. No pure gardener of high morals has ever been able to eradicate it from the garden of humanity.
Impassioned human lust will always explore all possible desires of the flesh. The beat of time appoints individuals across the country and in the city. Soon here, soon there, the false God, Sodom, needs a sacrifice.
The second half of the 11th century was a blooming period for sodomy and it existed in the Order of the Templars, the infamous secret sodomite society. A small group of sodomites existed as well in Sicily and the Abruzzo. The head of their organization was in India.
Today in southern China a pretty piece from Tunis and far into the Caucasus exists an abominable city of sodomy with a temple that holds all their secret love techniques. It has followers in all the large cities of the world.
In all countries, in one city or another there is a place where sodomy and bestiality are now blooming. First it is a bird, then a four footed beast that is strangely popular.
In the Rhienland in the old city of Mettmann the court is known for producing such amusing cases and almost as amusing punishments. The worthy citizens complain to the court and curse that which I applaud!
My friend, Justice of the Peace John, wanted to write his doctoral thesis about it.
“The Origin and Cultural Development linking the district of Mettmann to the second paragraph of Statute 175 R.-Str.-G.-B from the 12th century to today.”
But the Heidelberg Judicial Faculty had little sympathy for this theme. They suggested he choose to write instead about the indebtedness of the District Hubbelrath to the movement of the common people which is certainly very important but not half as humorous.
No one can deny that there is a humorous side to every single case of sodomy or bestiality. From the “Golden Ass” of Apuleius into modern times there is a long chain of droll and amusing anecdotes. These are all harmless crimes. It is a crying shame that medical knowledge never applies in these cases. In criminal law books all around the world the worst tortures known can be found.
These are promoted not only by the common people but by the higher class, the so-called educated rabble. The sturdy masses merely see these incidents as humorous. Boccaccio, Aretino, Voltaire, Goethe and Balzac all have highly polished jokes about it.
Heine’s sarcastic poem begins:
“Zu Berlin im Alten Schlosse
Sehen wir in Stein gemetz,
Wie ein Weib mit einem Rosse
Sodomitisch sich ergötzt.”
[Translator’s note:
“In an old castle in Berlin
We see chiseled in stone
How a woman with a steed
Amused herself through sodomy.”]
The Royal family has never forgotten this mockery of their illustrious ancestor depicted in this joke as a steed lustful woman. Who can really be further offended? Friedrich the Great had a great laugh over it even though he stopped work on Voltaire’s rough draft of him with his greyhounds because it was not to his taste.
He found himself in good company with Voltaire’s “Pucelle”, which depicted the virgin, Joan of Arc, after her conquest of Orleans riding an ass into a bedroom. Voltaire really intended the love as only allegory and the ass signifying the Catholic Church.
Such humor is known to date from the 18th century and while not appreciated by the common folk was by the Lords that ruled over them. They rewrote the language and revised an old judgment where a poor fellow that had been caught in obscenities with a goat should be burned at the stake. “The offender must burn,” so declared the Law. The clever Lords revised it to read, “The goat must burn”.
Friedrich the Great was an animal lover with a great sense of humor. When a cavalry member was caught making love to his mare he hung them both along with a sign that read, “The fellow wanted to be transferred to the infantry”. Today he would hardly be reported by his comrades.
The sodomy and bestiality in hidden bloom during World War I was so pervasive there were constant jokes about it. A cow is called Mrs. Sergeant-Major Lieutenant in the East and such four legged soldier wives exist in all armies around the world.
That is simply the way things are and no cleric or Judge can change it. Everyone knows that centaurs, fauns, and other mythological beasts come from the interbreeding of human and animal species. We all know they come about through this horrible obscenity but no one really sees any wrong in it.
It is the same with this incidentally full blooded adventure of the eleven Chinese that I will now relate. This story of strange love is not meant to be taken in an evil way.
So, there were these eleven Chinese in Chicago-
But no, I must begin it differently. My friend Fritz Lange lived in Chicago. He owned a laundry business. Really he was a land assessor and gambled on the hounds, but not in this story.
Over in America a man can do what he wants. He can be a waiter, dishwasher, bill poster, carriage maker or anything. Fritz finally had some luck and married the daughter of a Laundry owner. He began working there to learn the business so that when the old man died he could take over and do well with it.
Now he had built it into a mighty laundry business with a dozen pickup and delivery points scattered throughout the city. One day he came to me very excited. I needed to help him. Eleven of his workers had been arrested. Chinese naturally, they are equally the best and the cheapest washers in the city. I could help him because I knew the criminal Judge that had the case.
It was Judge Mc Ginty, whom I played stud poker with twice a week. Now Mc Ginty was a sociable man and liked to talk. He didn’t want the eleven fellows to get off easily and it would be hard to get them released. The eleven Chinese were confined because they had beaten up a God wretched pathetic red-haired fourteen year old Irish rascal named Jackie Murphy.
“Why did they beat him up?” I asked.
“He seduced the bride,” said Fritz Lange.
“That’s not going to be good,” I opinioned. “Judge Mc Ginty is very much a son of Erin and will certainly decide for the young rascal against the yellow brothers. Still, many a man can be persuaded by whiskey.”
“It is so dangerous!” My friend Lange cried. “The bride, that’s what my Chinese call her! The bride is not the bride of just one, but strangely of all eleven! To them she is not just a feminine being of white or yellow color! In short, the bride of the eleven is not human. To be entirely correct she is curiously enough a four legged sow!” “And Jackie seduced her?” I asked.
“Entirely correct,” nodded the land assessor. “The Chinese here live on nothing. They only save and save through the day and through the year until they have enough to go back home with a full purse. There is only one thing they can’t renounce and that is the desires of the flesh in any form. They are horny as apes and can’t stop themselves. They must have something so the eleven fellows went out and bought a pig. From an economical standpoint it is certainly a clever idea, you could scarcely find anything cheaper.
They all live together in a basement apartment and the sow lives there with them. Jackie, the son of the house manager, was hiding and saw the entire obscenity go down. Then, when my Chinese were at work he snuck into the cellar and climbed into the circular pen with their lover. With him it made an even dozen. When the Chinese found out the jealousy grew so strong in their love-struck fruitcake souls that they beat the red-haired rascal half to death.”
“Thunderation!” I cried. “That looks very bad. Does Judge Mc Ginty know all this?”
“Naturally he knows,” answered Fritz Lange. “Jackie’s father had the Chinese arrested. They apologized for the atrocity and for mishandling the boy but when they found out they were going to prison they started screaming that Jackie was the 12th and in league with them. That’s when he first learned from the Chinese what really happened.”
“What will the outcome be?”
“Twenty years in prison is the minimum according to the Law in the State of Illinois. They are not as mild here as they are across the ocean! And I have lost my best workers! But there is still a chance. The case is still with the police and has not yet gone to court. I’ve always been on friendly terms with the police. I need you to take this to Judge Mc Ginty.”
He reached into a bag and brought out a large piece of Nephritis, Imperial Jade, of the most glorious green color and wonderfully cut into the shape of an enormous turkey. It was easily worth more than a few hundred dollars.
“Here,” he cried. “The fellows have given me this. It is something very valuable that can possibly get them out of this jam. Take this to Judge Mc Ginty; I think he will talk with you.”
So I took the stone and went to Mc Ginty but he was not home. His wife greeted me. She was pretty and distinguished despite being fifty-four years old and she understood the situation. I gladly showed her my lump of jade and her eyes got bigger and bigger.
“I received this as a present,” I said weakly. ” I wondered if your husband was interested in it. I could really use a few dollars right now.”
At that moment Mc Ginty came.
“Buy it!” His wife cried out to him. “I’ve been wishing for a piece like that for many years. He’s letting it go really cheap, only-“
The Judge took the glorious piece and set it down on the table.
“Come with me,” he said. “I don’t want her to hear our little chat.”
He took me around back despite the pleading of his wife who stood with both hands clasped together in front of her.
“God, I’ve got fifty dollars,” she cried after us.
“What’s this about?” He asked me out on the street.
“It’s like this,” I said. “You know about those Chinese that were arrested yesterday. My friend Lange needs his workers and wants them released. The fellows gave him this stone to sell so they could get some money for their defense.”
Mc Ginty looked at me sharply.
“I know it’s not right-, “he began. “What do you know about this?”
“Nothing special,” I lied. “They beat up a fourteen year old.”
“Nothing else?” The honorable Judge asked.
He winked at me and gave me a poke in the ribs.
“Nothing that I can remember,” I laughed.
Judge Mc Ginty chuckled, and then he said. “Good, I will buy this stone because my wife wants it so badly. But I can’t give you more than ten dollars for it. There, that is enough for your defense. Go quickly to Jim Mc Namus, the lawyer, you know him. Give him the ten dollars-wait a minute,” He put down another. “There, he gets one for each. The rascal Murphy must defend his son because he is Irish, he won’t talk.
Tell Mc Namus to be in court at 6:00 this evening to get this over with quickly. Now, please excuse me. I must go to my wife and bring her this little thing she is so madly in love with.”
He played with the stone on the table.
Judge Mc Ginty knew what he was talking about. I was at the criminal court that evening. A policeman said that the eleven coolies had beaten the young Murphy. The rascal said nothing. The Chinese said nothing. The defense asked for a mild sentence.
Judge Mc Ginty ruled that each pay a dollar to the state and another in damages to the father of the youth. Fritz Lange immediately paid the twenty-two dollars and another twenty-five for the cost of the proceedings. Everyone went home happy. It didn’t take over five minutes.
A week later Fritz Lange stopped by. I should go with him to his Chinese, he said. They wanted to thank me. So I went with him. We went down into the cellar, all eleven were there and so was the young red-haired rascal Murphy.
They were very polite to me, offered me Saki and a little rice. Then the feast began. It was pork sausage. They had been taken in once and paid dearly.
“We are not doing that again,” they said.
So they slaughtered their bride, and consumed her with enviable appetites.
I like to think that I am moderately open minded and unprejudiced. I am no food critic, but it was a bit too much for me.

Ihaka Whaanga Ngāti Rakai Pāka, Ngāti Kahungunu (?-1875) It is not known when Ihaka Whaanga was born, but he died on December 14 at Mahia in 1875 and is buried at the southern tip of the Mahia Peninsula, marked by a memorial stone. Whaanga was the youngest child of Te Ratau and Kainga and the only survivor of a raid that claimed the lives of his parents and five brothers. Married three times to Kahungunu women from influential families, he lived the origins of his ancestor Te Huki's saying Te Kupenga a Te Huki (the net of Te Huki) which means to maintain unity and peace by marrying within the tribe. In the 1820s, Whaanga had met his first Pākehā trader touting muskets and powder for dressed flax. They arrived at Mahia in the vessel Fanny and were regular visitors during the 1820s. Ihaka is the Māorified name for Issac, a name presumably taken after converting to Christianity. It is not known when he converted to the Mormon faith, but his son Hirini did take a sea-voyage to Utah in 1894 travelling aboard the San Francisco steamer.1 Since, the Whaanga name is synonymous with rise of Mormonism in Hawkes Bay. By 1898, the church claimed they have 4,000 members, most of whom were Māori.2 Whaanga had an open attitude to trading and the settlement of Pākehā in Kahungunu and often lent his mana to the Crown. He took an appointment as an assessor under the Native Circuit Courts Act 1858 for the princely salary of £30 per annum and was expected to enforce the law and carry out the duties of a local magistrate. Whaanga agreed to large land purchases by the Government, perhaps to demonstrate support for the Crown, but not without protest from East Coast Māori leaders such as Wi Pere and others of Rongowhakaata who challenged Whaanga's right to sell.3 Three years before he died, Whaanga was presented with a sword of honour by the Crown as a reward for Ngāti Kahungunu campaigns against the Hauhau forces and Te Kooti Arikirangi. In 1874, he was decorated with the New Zealand War medal for service to the Crown. @brookealana 👌 (at Mahia Beach, New Zealand) https://www.instagram.com/p/BwGTr9gHM7V/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=vci4vuj308ut

Jury Report
Love it or hate it, the ‘Gothic Revival’ of the 19th century has left an architectural legacy in this country that is particularly marked in educational buildings. The Skinners’ School is such a place, its core buildings forming a muscular and evocative red-brick backdrop to the main playground.
How to respond to such a setting? Bell Phillips Architects have chosen to create a contemporary building that is successful in both speaking to the forms and materials of the Victorian buildings whilst also mediating between the wider town and the interior life of the school. It does this in a quietly urbane manner – the building is a simple L-shape in plan, with a tall pointed gable at each end of the ‘L’: one gable faces the town, the other overlooks the playground.
photo : Kilian O’ Sullivan
The building’s simple geometric forms are softened by the use of a gentle red brick, and enlivened by the use of a sawtooth brick motif that gives a ‘corrugated’ character to the walls, creating a play of light and shadow that echoes the surface decoration of the earlier buildings. This reading is further enhanced by the vertical proportions of the glazing, and by the portico that shelters one end of the playground and leads into the main entrance and stair.
The new building was created to allow the school to expand to five form entry and houses the English department, the school library and sixth form centre. The top-lit stair links these spaces together, culminating in the top floor library – a dramatic space with a timber lined ceiling following the steep pitch of the roof. Flooded with natural light, this space creates a wonderful learning environment, and has large windows overlooking the main road into the town, emphasising the school’s strong local connections.
The building helps to reorder the school campus while responding to the relationships between the oldest buildings, and demonstrates how an ‘architect’s eye’ can understand what makes a place and how to enhance its character.

Rise of Sixteen States: Prologues 2
Later Han
(Liu Yuan)
Beginning of Jianwu (25 – 56 AD), the Xiongnu's Wuzhuliuruodi Chanyu's son, the Aojianrizhu King of the Right, Bi, established himself as Southern Chanyu, and entered to live in Meiji in Xihe. The presently abandoned Shizuoguo city was precisely where the Chanyu moved his courtyard.
(Yao Yizhong)
Yao Yizhong was a Qiang man from Chiting in Nan'an. His ancestors were the progeny of the Yu clan. Formerly, Yu of Xia ennobled Shun's younger son among the Western Rong, and for generations they were chieftains of the Qiang. Their descendant Shaodang was prominent in the space between the Tao (River) and (Fu)han. His seventh generation grandson Tianyu at the end of Han's (Jianwu) Zhongyuan era (56 – 57 AD) robbed and disturbed the western provinces. He was defeated by the Marquis of Yanghu, Ma Wu, and moved to set out beyond the frontier.
(This defeat took place in 59 AD.)
Yu's ninth generation grandson Qianna led the people of his kind to adhere inside. The Han court praised him, and made use of him as General of the Best of the Army, Colonel of the Western Qiang, and King who has Returned to Obedience, and settled him in Nan'an's Chiting.
(Liu Yuan)
Middle of Zhongping (184 -189), the Chanyu Qiangqu sent his son Yufuluo to command troops and assist the Han, to chastise and pacify the Yellow Turbans. It happened that Qiangqu was killed by the people of his state. Yufuluo used his multitudes to stay with the Han, and was established as Chanyu. During the chaos of Dong Zhuo, he robbed and plundered Taiyuan and Hedong, and camped in Henei.
Yufuluo died (in 195 AD), his younger brother Huchuquan was established. He used Yufuluo's son Bao as Worthy King of the Left, this was precisely Liu Yuan's father.
(It seems chronologically implausible that Liu Yuan's father was born as early as 195.)
(Li Te)
At the end of Han, Zhang Lu resided in Hanzhong. He used the Way of Ghosts to teach the hundred families. The Cong people respected and trusted him, and many went to serve him. Faced with great chaos Under Heaven, they relocated from Dangqu in Baxi to enter Hanzhong's Yanche Slope. They robbed and plundered travellers and sojourners. The hundred families were troubled by them, and titled them as the Yanche Ba.
When Wu of Wei overcame Hanzhong (in 215), Te's grandfather Hu, together with Du Huo, Po Hu, Yuan Yue, Li Hei of Yangche, and others brought along more than 500 families to revert to Wei. Wu of Wei praised him, designated Hu and others as Generals, and relocated them to Lüeyang. (HYGZ: Li Tewas a native of Linwei in Lüeyang.) Those who moved inside likewise were more than 10 000 families, and dispersed to dwell in the various commanderies of Longyou and in Sanfu and Hongnong. In the northern lands, they were then titled as Ba people.
(Liu Yuan)
The Southern Chanyu, Huchuquan, entered court (in 216). Wu of Wei following that detained him, and made to divide his multitudes to be five sections. He used the Worthy King of the Left, Bao, as Leader of the Left Section. For his remaining leaders he always used the Liu clan as them.
The Left Section resided at Zishi in Taiyuan. The Right Section resided at Qi. The Southern Section resided at Puzi. The Northern Section resided in Xinxing. The Middle Section resided at Daling. The Liu clan, although divided to live in five sections, always resided in Jinyang at the banks of the Fen and Jian.
Wei
(Murong Hui)
Qianluo was Murong Hui's eleventh generation grandfather. He wore gold and silver mail, rode a white horse with gold and silver saddle and girdle, and came down from Heaven. The Xianbei made a god of him, and pushed him forward as lord and chief.
His great grandfather Muhoba at the beginning of Wei led his various section groups to enter and reside in Liaoxi. He accompanied Sima King Xuan to chastise Gongsun Yuan (in 238), and was designated King who Leads the Righteous. He started to found the state to the north of Dajicheng.
At the time the young of years of Yan and Dai often wore “swaying steps [buyao] caps”. Muhoba saw and was fond of them. He therefore pulled in his hair and put on the cap. The various sections followed called him out as the “Swaying Steps”. His descendants pronounced it wrongly, and thereupon it became Murong.
(Baxter & Saggart: buyao: (b- + -u C)(y- + -jew A) murong: (m- + -u C)(y- + -jowng A))
His grandfather Muyan accompanied Wuquan Jian to campaign against Gaoli (in 244) and had merit. He had added to his titles Great Commander-in-Chief and Worthy King of the Left.
(Liu Yuan)
Liu Bao's wife Ms. Huyan in the middle of Wei's Jiaping (249 – 254 AD) prayed for a child at Longmen. Soon after, there was a one big white fish, on top of it were two horns. With lifted fins and jumping scales it then came to the place of sacrifice. After a long time it then left. The shamans were all amazed by it, and said:
This is an auspicious omen.
That night she dreamt in the morning she was seeing the fish change into a person. In his left hand he held something as large as a chicken egg, its brilliant shine not ordinary. He gave [it] to Huyan, saying:
This here is the sun's essence, ingest to give birth to an honoured child.
She woke up and told Bao. Bao said:
A good sign! I formerly followed Zhang Jiong of Handan. His mother, Ms Situ (?) assessed [me], and said I would have honoured sons and grandsons. For three generations they would surely be greatly prosperous. [They] copy and resemble each other, it fits together.
13 Months after this she gave birth to Yuan. When Yuan was born, in his left hand there was writing which said “deep ocean” (Yuanhai淵海), thereupon they used it to name him.
In childhood he was noble and intelligent. At seven sui he came upon grieving his mother, he beat his breast, leaped, shouted and cried, his laments moved the nearby neighbourhood. The lineage clan and section group all together sighed in appreciation. At the time the Minister of Works, Wang Chang, heard and praised him, he both dispatched condolences and funeral gifts.
As a young child he was yet fond of studying, and did not rest day or night. He had as teacher Cui You of Shangdang. He practised Mao's Poetry, Mr. Jing's Changes, and Mr. Ma's Book of Documents. He was particularly fond of Mr. Zao's Traditions on the Spring and Autumn, and Sun and Wu's Principles of War, and in generally in everything recite them. In the History, Han and the various Masters he was without nothing in summarizing and looking over. He once spoke to the students of the same school, Zhu Ji of Shangdang, Fan Long of Yanmen, and others, saying:
I always held in high regard the written transmittals, and often held low Sui and Lu for having no military ability, and Jiang and Guan for having no civil. The Way follows from a person's broadness, to have no knowledge of something is certainly the shame of a lordly man. The two masters coming upon the August Gao were not able to found a legacy of a marquisate. The pair of excellencies following Taizong were not able to begin being praised for local schools. How is it not a pity!
Hence he thereupon studied military affairs. He also in all crafts was marvellously cut above the multitudes. Reaching adulthood, he had ape arms and was good at shooting, his bodily strength and power surpassed ordinary people, his bearing and decorum was outstanding and imposing. He was 8 chi, 4 cun tall. His beard was more than 3 chi long, in the middle of it three red prominent hair, 3 chi, 6 cun long.
There were Cui Yizhi of Zhunliu and Gongshi Yu of Xiangling and others, both good assessors of people. When they saw Yuan, they were surprised, and then in the assessment speech said:
This person's body and countenance is not ordinary, never seen by me [before].
Hence he was deeply honoured and respected, he pushed forward affection joined with grace. Wang Hun of Taiyuan with humble heart befriended him, and instructed his son Ji to do obeisance to him.
In the middle of the Xianxi (264 – 265 AD), he became a hostage son in Luoyang. King Wen of Jin profoundly welcomed him.
(Yao Yizhong)
Na's great great grandson Kehui aided Wei's generals to tether Jiang Wei at Tazhong. Due to his merit, they made use of him as General who Garrisons the West, Colonel who Appease the Rong, and Chief-Controller of the Western Qiang.

Green-thumb volunteers needed to rescue flood-damaged gardens and restore hope
As flood victims deal with insurers, assessors and builders to repair their damaged homes, one woman wants to make sure their backyards and gardens aren't forgotten in the recovery effort. Consulting gardener Kate Wall won a humanitarian award after the 2011 floods for her work mobilising volunteers to clean up and repair hundreds of gardens in Brisbane's southern suburbs.
Six weeks on from south-east Queensland's latest flood disaster, she's trying to rally a new army of green thumbs to give hope to people overwhelmed by the recovery process.
