I don't often read South African books, but I enjoyed the insightful way Mark Winkler's "Due South of Copenhagen" portrays an adult's re-evaluation of the world they saw as a child. When Max Fritz receives a letter about the death of his old friend, Karl Udengaard, he begins reminiscing about their childhood together in a small Lowveld town. As he recalls these memories for the first time in years, he slowly begins to realise the truth behind the tragedy that cut short their time together. #reading #literature #books #novel #LiteraryFiction #DueSouthOfCopenhagen #MarkWinkler #bookworm #BookReview #52BookChallenge #Book47of52 #ReadingChallenge #SouthAfricanFiction #SouthAfricanLiterature #BookChallenge #52BookChallenge2021 #BookChallenge2021 #ReadingChallenge2021 #bookstagram #SAFiction #SALiterature #BookLover @goodreads @thewriterswarmth https://www.instagram.com/p/CW0008CICFk/?utm_medium=tumblr

Hello, my Freaky Darlings! Here's a short extract from my serial killer thriller - Requiem in E Sharp. They walked the scene, each one taking notes and making their own observations. One of them would notice something that the others could miss. Three pairs of eyes were better than one. He tried to forget that the other two were with him and absorbed everything that was around him. They started at the front door and worked their way through the flat. Thabiso took pictures of anything that could be possible evidence. They climbed over the boxes and examined the contents in each. In the kitchen, they found two coffee cups. The milk jug was still standing next to the coffee that would never be drunk. The milk had turned sour. The smell of the sour milk was overpowered by that of the corpse. Blood, coagulated on the counter, had also run down the cupboards and collected in a small puddle at the base. A trail of blood led from another larger puddle, where her head had fallen, out of the kitchen door towards the bathroom. The boxes were still on the kitchen counter and on the floor, decorated with blood from her severed artery. There was an empty bottle of brandy lying on its side on top of the full rubbish bin. Thabiso snapped a few shots from a 90-degree angle and from all four corners of the room so that nothing would be missed. One cupboard door below the counter was hanging at an angle. It looked as though it had been kicked. Scuff marks were visible. “Signs of a struggle.” Dr Papenfuss said, pointing at the cupboard. “She was even making him a cup of coffee. Son of a bitch.” “At least she put up a struggle,” Thabiso chipped in once again. Nico and Pete turned and looked at him and shook their heads. “She’s still dead,” Nico said. Hello, my Freaky Darlings! Here's a short extract from my serial killer thriller - Requiem in E Sharp. He watched the back of her head bob up and down as she made the coffee, humming happily. The kettle was too loud. Her humming was out of tune and pulled his last nerve. She chatted about how rare it was to come across someone as polite as he was, but all he could hear was the sound of the piano clanging in his head. He crossed his wrists and slipped the wire over her head and pulled it around her throat. His heart lurched and the beat quickened. The excitement of the impending kill made him a little light-headed. A surprised groan escaped from her mouth. She tried to grab the wire, but her chewed fingernails were too short to dig in. She tried to grasp his gloved hands at the back of her head, but she was too slow. Her arms flailed around trying to hit him. Her foot connected with his shin. That would leave a bruise, he thought. He pulled the wire tighter. Its sharp edges cut into her flesh, slicing into her like a hot knife through butter. Her breath came in gasps; the more she struggled for breath the bigger and harder his erection grew. His breathing became harder and faster. The wire was swallowed up by her larynx. Blood ran down the front of her clothes. Her end was very close now, he could feel it. It was about time too. His muscles were killing him. The drunken old bitch had put up quite a fight. Her struggle became feeble. She stopped fighting as her last breath left her and the wire cut through the arteries in her throat. Blood from the severed artery spray-painted the cupboard and his face. He felt her final breath escape. The sound of her last breath tickled his ear like a lover’s whisper. Blood and spittle dribbled out of her mouth. Hello, my Freaky Darlings! Here's a short extract from my serial killer thriller - Requiem in E Sharp. For days afterwards he'd thought they'd catch him: every knock on the door had to be the cops. Maybe someone had seen him covered in blood. But the streets had been empty at that time on a Sunday night. The cops didn't show up on his doorstep. They were completely clueless. Considering that South Africa was literally one of the few countries where you could get away with murder, this shouldn't have been too much of a surprise. Every criminal knew that the police were just as corrupt as they, the felons, were. A couple of hundred Rands would ensure the police docket disappeared. And then there were the incompetent forensic labs, and the backlog was several years long. He'd recently watched a programme on Carte Blanche, the only news programme he bothered to watch, where the Forensic Pathologist office had been exposed. It took about three years for an autopsy report to be filed. The fact that they weren't knocking on his door shouldn't have been much cause for celebration. The news coverage on the first one had been dismal, but after the second one, they'd paid attention. And now – he scrutinised the body at his feet – they would really pay attention. Three bodies were better than one. He bent over, picked up her feet and dragged her through to her small closet-like bathroom. Her blood left a tell-tale trail behind him. The dark bathroom smelt of apples. A toilet flushed somewhere upstairs, and the sound of the water rushed down to him through the open ventilation window. Hello, my Freaky Darlings! It's Tuesday, which means it's time for a short extract from one of my books. This week it's from Requiem in E Sharp. The smell of rotting flesh was not as strong as it had been in the other victims’ homes. The body was still relatively fresh. Nico led them through the dark house. The passage light didn’t work. On closer examination, Nico discovered that the light bulb was encrusted with dust and had probably not been changed in years. The carpet was full of questionable stains. He heard a dog yelping in the backyard. That explained some of the stains. From the sound of its high-pitched yelping, it was something small like a Maltese poodle, a rugby ball with legs. Every time he saw one of those little ankle-biters he wanted to kick them. Dogs were supposed to be big and have a deep bark. These chaff-chaff things were sent here to plague him, he was sure of it. It certainly hadn’t been of any use to the victim. In the kitchen, they found coffee which had been in the process of being made. The coffee mugs on the counter were chipped and in need of a scrub. The scene was similar to that at Theresa van Wyk’s home and the other two victims. Thabiso took pictures from every angle of the room. Blood had coagulated on the dirty floor, which had probably not seen a mop in months. He would never be able to understand how people could live like this. The only reason Nico could think of was that she had given up all hope if she'd ever had any to begin with. In the second bedroom of this small, dismal house, they found all her dirty laundry piled up on a single bed with a foam mattress. The room smelt of wet dog. The material covering the mattress was worn through or ripped in places. Dog hair was all over the dirty laundry and all over the parts of the bed that was visible. What would you do if you thought you were losing your mind? What would you do if all those nightmares you thought were in your mind, were real? Out of the shadows comes a nightmare feeding on fear. Out of the shadows comes a demon bent on torment and death. Could you survive a demon bent on driving you to suicide? “If you’re open to reading a book that is genuinely disturbing, in some cases distasteful, and creepy as hell, then I’m pretty sure you’ll ‘enjoy’ Shadows.” – Dave de Burgh, author of Betrayal’s Shadow “Dark, twisted and creepy, Shadows will take you out of your comfort zone and keep you glued to the pages of the book, regardless of whether or not you want to.” – Tammy February, Women24.com Download Shadows from your favourite ebook store now.
