Desperate Daybreak

Hi everyone, I'm very excited to announce my plans for the sequel to Magnanimous Moonrise & Savage Sunset!

It's called Desperate Daybreak and will honestly be more of a suspense novel than a whump story, BUT it will still have plenty of emotion, drama, angst, and hurt/comfort so I think everyone who liked MMSS will really enjoy it. I'm drafting the first chapter and expect to maybe start posting sometime in the next week.

I've decided to refresh the taglist, so I'm using the MMSS taglist to notify everyone.

If you would like to be tagged when I start posting Desperate Daybreak, leave a like, a reblog, or a comment. Anyone who interacts with this post in some way will be on the new taglist. Everyone I'm so excited for this! We've been working really hard on MMSS to make it the best story it can be. If you liked the version of the story I've posted on my tumblr/AO3, you will definitely love this version we've been working on. It includes polishing and revisions throughout the entire work and several NEW scenes that answer questions no one ever asked, like "Where did Lex and Ari get their van from?"

Magnanimous Moonrise and Savage Sunset is coming to BackerKit!

Attention all vampire whump enthusiasts! WPP will be running our first-ever crowdfunding campaign to fund the publication of Magnanimous Moonrise and Savage Sunset, the debut novel from Nox Spacey (@not-a-space-alien).

In this unique dueling story structure, the same events are described from two different perspectives. Follow Alexis and Ariana, partners and vampire hunters, in Savage Sunset. Then follow Valen, a vampire they find themselves at odds with, in Magnanimous Moonrise. 

For this crowdfunding campaign, we will be raising money to print a special edition paperback of this book. The special edition will be an upside-down book (aka tête-bêche). So you’ll be able to read Savage Sunset, and then when you get to the end of that story, you’ll flip the book over and read Magnanimous Moonrise! 

We’ve been secretly working on this project for almost a year, and we’re so excited for it to be coming to fruition. The BackerKit campaign will run from December 1 to December 15, and books should ship out in January or early February.

So, I've realized I'm not as excited about the CYOA as I have been in the past, which is why I've been taking so long between entries. But instead of abandoning it, I'm going to finish it off and make it have an even 30 parts. This will be the last entry where you can choose which direction it goes in, so let's decide together what the ending will be! No nuance, you have to pick one option here, and I will write something to cap it off nice and neat by extrapolating from the vibes here.

"....What? Mushrooms? Why?"

Valen immediately goes red all the way to the tips of his ears, which twitch. "They're naturally high in a compound that is of interest to me for a research project." He sounds mortified to be talking about this. "I'm sorry. I won't come back for them. I'll forget all about it. That's all it was. I would never come here to harm any humans."

"Um," Felix says. "I don't really get it, but that's too silly to make up as a lie, I guess."

Valen sinks down, shoulders at his ears, not making eye contact.

Well, now you know. The vampire you've rescued was here collecting mushrooms for a research project. He seems...decent enough.

The last entry had two optioins tie, so I tried to use them both in a way that made sense!

Suggest Felix feed Valen some more.

"Oh..." Felix says. "Yeah, I guess that makes sense. Sorry, I wasn't thinking. Yeah, you're probably still hungry."

Valen's face is a mask of barely suppressed desperation. "I would like that. I would love that. Only if you want to."

"Here, buddy."

"Only if you want to."

Felix holds his hand out to Valen, who squeezes his eyes shut. "I'm sorry. Is it really okay?"

"Yes, it's okay," Felix says. "Go ahead."

In contrast to how Valen had bitten you, his hands on Felix are feather-light, as though afraid permission will be revoked. He gently scrapes Felix's forearm and takes delicate sips of blood.

You watch with a bit of bitterness. Come on, it would have been fine if he'd done that to you, instead of acting like a wild animal.

Valen licks Felix's wound close as soon as he's finished, then looks up at you nervously. "Is everything all right?"

Interrogate Valen--why was he here in the first place?

Valen looks fearful as soon as you start asking him about his motives. "I-I'm sorry. I know I shouldn't have been over here, I-I really thought nothing bad would happen. I-I wasn't here to hurt anyone, not a single soul, I promise." He averts his eyes, face red. "I know this sounds ridiculous, but, but I was here...collecting mushrooms. They don't grow on the northern side of the border."

Fuck it. Just shove the whole coffin in the car. Figure it out later.

You grab the bars of the cage and start dragging. Felix immediately jumps on board with your plan, relieved to have some plan of attack, grabbing the other end.

The vampire inside whimpers with fear, eyes wheeling around as the scenery changes. "You're all right," Felix soothes him. "Just hang in there."

Felix pushes the foot of the coffin up while you drag the head end up the stairs. The vampire inside cranes his neck to look at you with wet, scared eyes, clearly anxious about where you're going.

You encounter a problem when you get the coffin to the top of the stairs: It's too long to pivot around the corner. You end up having to stand it up, awkwardly walk it a few feet, then lay it back down. Each movement is accompanied by the rattling of chains and the scared, muffled cries of the vampire inside.

But finally you're at the front door, and no one's caught you yet. Felix opens the door, then scurries over and lowers the backseats of the car so you can use the room in the trunk.

The two of you push and pull and shove and huff and puff until the coffin is finally securely in the car. Felix shuts the door, panting. "Let's get out of here!" He seems exhilarated at breaking the rules.

You both hop in and peel out of the parking lot.

After a few minutes of driving, Felix starts to look more and more anxious. "So...hahaha...it's almost later...

He just needs help not to lunge--chain him to the radiator.

Valen wilts as you say this, clearly disappointed--whether in himself or you, you can't tell.

"It's okay," Felix says. "We just need--if you draw any more blood, you could really hurt someone, you know?"

"I'm sorry," Valen says pitifully. "I'm sorry."

"All right, come here, buddy." Felix pats the radiator. Still looking dejected, Valen trudges over and kneels down. Felix clips a chain around the collar on Valen's neck, then secures it to the radiator. "Okay, there. See? That's not so bad."

Valen is downcast.

Valen called to let them know he and Sebastian had gotten home safely, but he didn't come back.

It wasn't surprising, really, but it still hurt.

What was surprising was the fact that he didn't answer his phone after that first call.  Did he really not want to talk to them?  Had he been hiding his disdain for them that well?

Lex cried about it.  She knew in her heart Valen had no real reason to want to stay in touch with them, but she’d thought maybe they could have at least fixed the situation a little, to show Valen humans weren’t complete and total monsters to him.  That maybe they could at least have a phone call every once in a while.  It was hard to tell if she was more upset about not ever seeing Valen again, or if the guilt of what they’d done was just too much to bear now that there was nothing more that could be done to fix it.

Lex left a frankly absurd number of voicemails, calling him almost every day for the few weeks after his departure.  Ari kept telling her not to, that he would call back if he wanted to, and Ari channeled her own negative feelings into getting frustrated at Lex for not leaving it alone.

Ari knew she was a piece of shit deep down, and Valen not wanting to see her again just confirmed that.  There wasn’t anything to be surprised about, but it still hurt.

They tried to soldier on.  They kept on as usual.  Neither of them really wanted to be vampire hunters anymore.  Not only did it feel bad, but they just weren’t good at it anymore.

Pretty much every single time they answered a V alert and it turned out to be a young adult vampire undoubtedly on their first hunt, neither of them could bring themselves to kill them.  They just didn’t try very hard and let them get away, settling for hoping they’d been scared off.

It was horrible.  Neither of them wanted to think about how many humans had been harmed or taken because they were falling down on the job, but neither of them had the guts to quit.  Not to mention they sort of couldn’t, because they needed the money, and it was… difficult to find another job, sometimes, when vampire hunting had been your main career for years and people had expectations about what kind of work people like you were suited for.

They started arguing more often.  Ari’s stress eating picked up.  Lex cried more easily.  They packed up the belongings Valen had left behind and hid them so they didn’t have to look at them.  It felt like there was a Valen-shaped hole in their life.

Until one day, the phone rang.  “What?” Ari answered gruffly.

“Ariana.”  It was Valen’s voice, and Ari had never not been pissed to be called Ariana before now.  “Please help me.  I don’t know what to do.  I’m with my husband and I don’t know what to do.  Please help me.”

Ari’s heart leapt in her throat.  Lex saw her expression and came over to put an ear up to the phone.  “Valen?” Ari said, alarmed.  “Where are you?”

“The Kithrara estate, I-”  He abruptly went silent. 

“Valen?” Ari pressed.  “Valen?  Talk to me, baby, what’s happening?  Valen?”

The line went dead.

Ari slammed the phone back in the cradle.  “Fuck.  Fuck.”

“Star-69 it,” Lex said desperately.

Ari dialed to ring back the last call number.  The phone didn’t even ring.  “Fuck!”  Ari slammed the phone back into the wall.

“The Kithrara estate,” Lex said.  “That’s his husband.  His-”

“His scumbag shitbag husband,” Ari said.  “Who isn’t even letting him use the phone freely.”  

“What do we do?” Lex said, sounding small and lost.

Ari ground her teeth.  She picked the phone back up and dialed Bailey and Jerome’s number.

Let him do it, but try to pry his teeth out so he's not biting you so hard.

You put a hand to his forehead and gently push. In response, he bites down harder and lets out a savage growl.

Felix comes into the room with a look of concern on his face. "Valen, stop, come on, man." He puts his arms around Valen and tries to pull him off, and Valen clamps onto your arm like an alligator. More animalistic sounds rumble in his throat.

You grab a handful of hair and pull. Not hard enough to hurt. It does nothing. Felix is also clearly too hesitant to pull hard enough to hurt him, but continues pleading for Valen to stop.

He does not stop. He gulps down the blood, like he's frantic to get as much as possible before it stops. His eyes are blown wide. He doesn't seem to hear anything you're saying. You're losing so much blood.

You pass out.

When you wake up, Valen is on the floor with Felix kneeling on his back. The vampire is in full-blown tears. "I'm sorry," he weeps. "I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry, I-I just couldn't control myself, I was so hungry."

Feed Valen by draining blood into a cup in the next room and bringing it in for him.

Okay, there's no reason why Valen has to bite you directly. Probably best to play it safe. You tell Felix your plan, and he agrees. "I'll stay here with him. You do it in there."

You go into the kitchen and grab a mug--one that you're not too attached to. You then make a very small cut on your arm and press to squeeze the blood out.

"Valen, stop!" Felix's voice suddenly shouts from the next room, and before you can even turn to see what's up, something has slammed into you from behind. Valen's eyes are blown wide like a rabid beast, and he growls savagely before pouncing on you and clamping his mouth over the open wound. He bites and tears the skin further, then gulps down rapid sips.
