my hunt for a potentially lost anime girl

around 2 years ago, i was fucking around on gifcities.org looking at gifs from a bygone era, trying to see what's the nichest of niche animanga and video game stuff i could find, mostly to flex my knowledge on how "obscure" my taste is. i'm a hipster at heart unfortunately and the rising resurgence of 2000s anime internet as an aesthetic only made me want to distinguish myself further.

however, while scrolling, i discovered a gif of this girl right here:

i'm a hardcore lover of cute robot girls, so naturally, i was immediately drawn to her. i had to know what she was from before anyone else could. unfortunately, clicking to the archived geocities page she was sourced from gave basically no information about what she could be from.

below is said geocities, along with another source via flickr.

i will also note: the geocities source seems to have the file named as di gi charat, which i have only seen 3 episodes of the original anime, so either she's misnamed as such, or i'm a fake fan and i should be burned at the stake. the flickr source has the file named as "visca", and searching it along with keywords like "anime", "manga", "visual novel" etc. yielded no results that were relevant.

so yeah! i guess what i'm saying is that i'd like any help to figuring out her origin, and whether she's an original character, has a piece of media she's from, a gijinka, some lost nijiura maid, whatever! please feel free to dm, ask, or reblog regarding any info you may have.

Watching Peter Murphy within almost breathing distance while performing with Bauhaus on their first US gig at Tier 3, New York on Sept. 5, 1980, in support of their debut album 'In the Flat Field', as captured by Eugene Merinov.

Upon arriving at The Iroquois Hotel in NY for their first US tour, the band was all fired up and excited to hit the town for some NY nightclubbing, all but one who preferred to have a quiet night in: Daniel Ash decided to grab a quiet drink in the hotel bar, where, to his astonishment, got to meet two of his all-time heroes, Mick Ronson & Iggy Pop, and also got invited up to his room for a little party. He eventually handed them a copy of their single, “Terror Couple Kill Colonel”. Iggy actually attended their gig at Danceteria one week later and as Kevin Haskins recalls in his book 'Bauhaus Undead':

"...A few numbers in and I hear a heckler yelling loudly above the music and can hear Peter giving back as good as he’s getting. As Peter moved to the right, I looked for the heckler and saw a guy jostling about down the front wearing a motorcycle jacket. It was Iggy Pop! The gig continued with Iggy and Pete launching verbal missiles at each other throughout our set. Afterwards, Iggy came backstage and congratulated us on a great show! He explained that he had a driver outside, and told him he’d only be about 10 minutes, but as we were so good he decided to stay the entire set ... then he was off to some “dark and dangerous S&M club,” and then disappeared into the night..."

***This remarkable photo was sourced from the FB page of former hc punk vocalist Eddie Morgan (Condemned To Death, Ice 9, Balls of Steel), who is also captured in this one (the second kid off the wall), but there are more pix from that particular Bauhaus gig on Eugene Merinov's Flickr photostream.

A year in illustration, 2023 edition (part two)

The West Midlands Police were kind enough to upload a high-rez of their surveillance camera control room to Flickr under a CC license (they've since deleted it), and it was the perfect frame for dozens of repeating clown images with HAL9000 red noses. This worked out great. The clown face is from a 1940s ad for novelty masks.

I spent an absurd amount of time transforming a photo I took of three pinball machines into union-busting themed tables, pulling in a bunch of images from old Soviet propaganda art. An editorial cartoon of Teddy Roosevelt with his big stick takes center stage, while a NLRB General Counsel Jennifer Abruzzo's official portrait presides over the scene. I hand-made the eight-segment TILT displays.

Working with the highest-possible rez sources makes all the difference in the world. Syvwlch's extremely high-rez paint-scraper is a gift to people writing about web-scraping, and the Matrix code waterfall mapped onto it like butter.

This old TWA ad depicting a young man eagerly pitching an older man has incredible body-language – so much so that when I replaced their heads with raw meat, the intent and character remained intact. I often struggle for background to put behind images like this, but high-rez currency imagery, with the blown up intaglio, crushes it.

I transposed Photoshop instructions for turning a face into a zombie into Gimp instructions to make Zombie Uncle Sam. The guy looking at his watch kills me. He's from an old magazine illustration about radio broadcasting. What a face!

The mansplaining guy from the TWA ad is back, but this time he's telling a whopper. It took so much work to give him that Pinnocchio nose. Clearly, he's lying about capitalism, hence the Atlas Shrugged cover. Bosch's "Garden of Earthly Delights" makes for an excellent, public domain hellscape fit for a nonconensual pitch about the miracle of capitalism.

There's no better image for stories about techbros scamming rubes than Bosch's 'The Conjurer.' Throw in Jeff Bezos's head and an Amazon logo and you're off to the races. I boobytrapped this image by adding as many fingers as I could fit onto each of these figures in the hopes that someone could falsely accuse me of AI-generating this. No one did.

Once again, it's Bosch to the rescue. Slap a different smiley-face emoji on each of the tormented figures in 'Garden of Earthly Delights' and you've got a perfect metaphor for the 'brand safety' problem of hard news dying online because brands don't want to be associated with unpleasant things, and the news is very unpleasant indeed.

I really struggle to come up with images for my linkdump posts. I'm running out of ways to illustrate assortments and varieties. I got to noodling with a Kellogg's mini-cereal variety pack and I realized it was the perfect place for a vicious gorilla image I'd just found online in a WWI propaganda poster headed 'Destroy This Mad Brute.' I put so many fake AI tells in this one – extra pupils, extra fingers, a super-AI-esque Kellogg's logo.

Bloodletting is the perfect metaphor for using rate-hikes to fight inflation. A vintage image of the Treasury, spattered with blood, makes a great backdrop. For the foreground, a medieval woodcut of bloodletting quacks – give one the head of Larry Summers, the other, Jerome Powell. For the patient, use Uncle Sam's head.

I killed a long videoconference call slicing up an old pulp cover showing a killer robot zapping a couple of shrunken people in bell-jars. It was the ideal image to illustrate Big Tech's enshittification, especially when it was decorated with some classic tech slogans.

There's something meditative about manually cutting out Tenniel engravings from Alice – the Jabberwock was insane. But it was worth it for this Tron-inflected illustration using a distorted Cartesian grid to display the enormous difference between e/acc and AI doomers, and everyone else in the world.

ppl being more interested in Fandom than the actual source text is so real like they do have their own nonexistent text thats just a recycled concoction of the same bland fandom incorrect quotes tropes over and over again which deviates so much from the canon and they prefer to the actual thing lol

my favorite example of sourcecreep is the fact that if you go on reddit, pinterest, or facebook, or google image search 7 years ago, or flickr and photobucket if you're properly fandom old, you will find image edits of disney's jack sparrow with the quote overlay "the problem is not the problem. the problem is your attitude about the problem."

if you've seen enough of these edits (there are many thousands of them), you might even read those two sentences in his trademark cadence.

the problem here, though, is not anyone's attitude about the problem. it's that this quote has never appeared in any of the five films in which jack sparrow appears. nor in any of the video games he stars or guest-stars on. nor in any of the tie-in young jack sparrow novels or the film novelizations. it is not from a deleted scene or an early draft of any script. it's not from any of the disney park parades or firework shows in which jack is included as a face character with recorded speaking lines. it's not from the original ride or the re-dress of the ride post-dead man's chest.

this is a quote from the YA series the sisterhood of the traveling pants. one of the characters' coaches says it to them in one of the books because they are children in high school. there is no reason for it to be attributed to this character or this franchise besides one patient zero at some point or another 20 years ago making an image with a text overlay on picnik photo editor and uploading it to their livejournal or whatever.

anyway this is how asoiaf fans on twitter absorb information about their favs from the series and then post about it. i believe there are many such cases across fandom at large.
