wedding day
i had been hoping to make this Mitchell & Webb skit into an incorrect quotes post, with Maria and Horatio as the bride and groom, but a lot of the little asides from the dialogue don’t fit in with their characters and anyway it’s kind of too long for the format to work. but i still wanted to share it with you all, because it absolutely melts. here’s a non-Hornblower Hornblower Shitpost, everybody. you can imagine it in their voices if you like.
minister: and so we reach the most joyful part of the ceremony. Nick and Rosanna have written their own wedding vows, and I shall ask them to exchange them now.
groom: Rosanna, it’s been eight years now since we started going out, and with each day that passes I’ve felt more and more strongly that neither of us are getting any younger. we’re both well past thirty now, and basically unless we get married we should probably split up. but I’ve moved in with you now, and I’m buggered if I’m carrying all those books back down four flights of stairs.
bride: Nick, from the first moment I met you, I knew that compared to other men you are a six at best. with my holiday tan on I’m a seven, and I could do so much better, but I just honestly be bothered. anyway, you’ve been gratifyingly unobservant of the two affairs I’ve had during our relationship. also, my mum’s been going on and on at me to get married all my life and by marrying you I hope to teach her a sharp, unpleasant lesson.
groom: Rosanna. you and I have something between us. I don’t know what it is - I’m not even sure I like it. your habits are annoying, and they may get more annoying in time, especially if you continue to turn into your mother, which all the signs are that you will. on the other hand, you’ve learned to sleep through those funny spasm things I do when I’m dreaming, and you have a nice car. and you’re slightly thicker than me, which I like. and the bottom line is, if things get tough, in seven or eight years, we can always jack it in. and so I ask you, in this sacred place, Rosanna: will you be my first wife?
bride: go on then.
minister: you may now kiss the bride.
groom: no that’s fine.

Songwriter Jimmy Webb Announces Release of New Album: SlipCover on May 17!
Press Release
Source: Hellman Communications
Grammy-winning American songwriter and arranger, composer/ singer JimmyWebb announces his new album SlipCover available on May 17 on S-Curve Records/BMG. “SlipCover” pays tribute to ten of Webb’s friends and fellow members of the pop pantheon including Joni Mitchell, Randy Newman, Stevie Wonder, Paul McCartney and others.
The first track, a cover of Billy Joel’s “Lullabye (Goodnight, My Angel)” is available today.
Preorder and Listen here: http://jimmywebb.ffm.to/slipcover.
Using his own instrumental piano arrangements, Webb shows off the complex melodies that he says will “make you hear these musicians more as composers, than rock stars and songwriters.” His piano playing, in what he calls “this minimalist setting,” weaves together disparate influences. It draws on classical music, L.A. pop, and occasionally the fluid “slip note” style of Floyd Cramer, one of the key architects of the Nashville sound.
This is Webb’s first instrumental album and his first new album in five years. The idea behind the album began casually, when Webb was visiting his friend Randy Newman, sat down at the piano, and played Newman’s “Marie.” Newman suggested that Webb record an entire solo piano album, and that notion took hold.
This is a very personal album for Webb and that feeling extends onto the album cover which features a multi-media self-portrait. “For the album cover I chose to use my self-portrait, as an invitation to the audience to make this a personal experience; these are my interpretations of some of my favorites songs. You could listen as if you were hanging out in the living room with me, sharing music,” explains Webb.
Jimmy Webb is best known for his numerous platinum-selling songs including “Up, Up and Away,””By the Time I Get to Phoenix,””Wichita Lineman,””Galveston,” “The Worst That Could Happen,” “All I Know,” and “MacArthur Park.” His songs have been recorded by Glen Campbell, Michael Feinstein, Linda Ronstadt, Donna Summer, The 5th Dimension, Art Garfunkel, Richard Harris and Frank Sinatra, among others.

NFL draft rumors 2017: Trades, team interests, and more
With hours to go before the NFL draft, trade rumors are going to be thick. We’re here to help keep track of them.
The 48 hours before the first night of the NFL draft are a buffet of trade rumors. But like any smorgasbord, there’s really nothing besides the soft-serve machine that’s worth your time.
A lot of the rumors have some basic kernel of truth to them. For instance, some team with a top-five pick might really be fielding calls from teams looking to move up in the draft. The likelihood of that happening declines once they get a chance to weigh the offer.
You also have to consider the motivations at play. A team might be selectively planting a trade rumor to drive up the price of its pick, undercut some other team in trade talks, etc. The possibilities are endless. But it makes most of those exciting trade rumors you read about on Wednesday dead on arrival a day later.
However, we here at SB Nation NFL are dedicated to delivering to you the juiciest of draft rumors, if only so we can poke holes in them. Consider it service journalism for NFL draft fans.
Day 2 rumors
Will the Packers pick DeShone Kizer?
Green Bay has the 33rd pick in the draft after a Thursday night deal with the Browns. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport says they’re getting plenty of calls from teams interested in moving up to get the Notre Dame quarterback, but he adds that the Packers might keep the pick and take Kizer themselves.
This sounds like a classic case of a team trying to drive up the asking price for their pick. We’ll see.
Day 1 rumors
Bears looking to move down?
The Chicago Bears hold the No. 3 pick, but Adam Schefter reports that they’re looking to trade out of the spot. If such a trade gets completed, that would send the dominoes falling pretty quickly this early in the first round.
Chiefs are trying to make a move into the top 10
According to Ian Rapoport, the Kansas City Chiefs are looking to trade up into a spot in the top 10. This follows an earlier report that Patrick Mahomes could go off the board in the first 10 picks.
If the Chiefs move up, it’s possible they’re making a play for Mahomes, though they might also be looking at the inside linebacker position.
League sources expect Texas Tech QB Patrick Mahomes to be a top 10 pick
No one has seen their stock rise in the pre-draft process more than Mahomes. The cannon-armed Big 12 quarterback has gone from mid-round pick to Day 1 selection in the past two months. On the eve of the draft, sources suggest he could even be one of the first 10 prospects off the board.
With several passer-needy teams dotting the top 10 — the Browns, Jets, 49ers, and Bears foremost among them — it would be no surprise to see a quarterback taken early, even given 2017’s disappointing crop. For Mahomes to make this kind of leap, he’d have to surpass Deshaun Watson, DeShone Kizer, and possibly even Mitchell Trubisky in scouts’ eyes.
The Titans are having serious discussions about trading back from No. 5
The Tennessee Titans were on the brink of their first playoff appearance since 2008, but if they believe the missing piece on their quest for the postseason is out there, he may not be available at No. 5. The franchise has reportedly engaged in several discussions about trading the lower of their two first round picks Thursday. If they jettison the fifth overall pick, they’ll still have the No. 18 selection.
Myles Garrett’s agent is confident he’ll be 2017’s No. 1 overall pick
Despite recent rumors Mitchell Trubisky will be the Browns’ top pick on Thursday, Myles Garrett’s agent believes his client will be the first player selected at the NFL Draft.
"I do not know, but I am hopeful it will happen,’’ Cook said in a telephone interview late Thursday afternoon. "And I am encouraged by something. We represent Jamie Collins. When we did his deal with Cleveland they stressed that they were going to build that franchise from the ground up on defense. If that’s the case, if they still feel that way, then Myles is the guy in this draft for that. We’ll see.’’
Unless, of course...
Browns may actually take Mitchell Trubisky at No. 1
Myles Garrett has looked like a sure-thing for the No. 1 pick since he announced he’d enter the draft, but the rumors of Mitchell Trubisky interest just won’t go away. Bob McGinn of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel is one of the best draft prognosticators and he has projected Trubisky will be the No. 1 pick in his mock draft.
Daniel Jeremiah of NFL Network stoked the flames a bit too on Wednesday night when he said even the No. 1 pick looks difficult to predict. SB Nation’s Dan Kadar is still sticking with Myles Garrett like all the rest of the media, but there sure is a lot of smoke still floating around.
Titans considering offers to move down from the fifth pick
Adam Schefter reported that early Wednesday morning. This is one of those textbook draft rumors. It’s quite possible the Titans have received some calls about trading down. The fifth pick in the draft looks like a great spot for teams who want to move up and take a quarterback like Mitchell Trubisky or Deshaun Watson.
You could say the same about the fourth spot, the sixth spot, and maybe even the seventh. This feels like one of those rumors floated out there by the team to try and drive up interest in its pick.
Bears interested in Leonard Fournette at No. 3
When is it OK to pick a running back in the top five? Never. But that won’t stop some team from doing it. Peter King said, “don’t be shocked” if the Bears do take the LSU running back with the third overall pick.
I wouldn’t be shocked because the Bears have a tendency to be kind of a disaster of a franchise. Rebuilding teams like Chicago have too many other needs to consider before drafting a running back. The Bears also have a pretty good running back in Jordan Howard. Chicago fans should hope this is one of the draft rumors that never materializes.
Buccaneers looking to move down
Well of course they are! Every team wants to move down in the draft. But Schefter says the Bucs are talking to three teams about moving down later in the first or even into the second.
Tampa Bay has been connected all spring to various running backs in the draft. Moving down from No. 19 would be a smart way to go if that’s what the Bucs really intend to do. Hello, Dalvin Cook?
Davis Webb in the first round?
That’s the word from Ian Rapoport at the NFL Network. A scout told him that the Cal product “has Dak-like intangibles,” something that will NEVER EVER come back to hurt that scout. Nope.
If a team does want to draft a QB, trading back into the late part of the first round isn’t a bad idea because you get that fifth-year option, which is really nice to have when you think about how much franchise QBs cost.
Broncos trying to move up in the first round
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that despite reports of plenty of teams wanting to move down, the Broncos want to move up in the first round.
The Denver Broncos have most often had offensive linemen mocked to them, with Ryan Ramczyk from Wisconsin being the player most often projected to them. It’s also possible that they could be chasing Christian McCaffrey, whose father Ed played for the Broncos as well.
Washington could trade back to draft Jabrill Peppers
NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reports that Washington’s Bruce Allen along with others had dinner with Jabrill Peppers in Ann Arbor last weekend. Ian Rapoport added that they have discussed trading back late in the first round, needing help in the secondary.
Peppers plans on being a safety in the NFL, as he indicated while he was at the NFL Combine. He would also be a welcome addition in the return game for Washington, with DeSean Jackson leaving for the Buccaneers in the offseason.
Falcons may potentially move up from No. 31
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that the Falcons may move up from No. 31. The Falcons are in need of a defensive end, but could also be drafting an offensive lineman. In our mock draft database, the player most projected to the Falcons has been Michigan defensive end Taco Charlton. Other leading options have been Forrest Lamp, Cam Robinson, Charles Harris, and Takk McKinley.
The Bills may move down from No. 10
Rapoport also noted that the Bills may be switching things up and possibly moving down. Clemson wide receiver Mike Williams has been the player most mocked to the Bills at No. 10, along with tight end O.J. Howard and quarterback Mitchell Trubisky. Buffalo Rumblings has the Bills needs in the draft as cornerback, wide receiver, tight end, right tackle, and linebacker.
Eagles considering a trade up for Christian McCaffrey?
His combine workout wowed teams, and he’s not expected to be a top 10 pick, according to Adam Schefter. One team being linked to the Stanford product is the Philadelphia Eagles, who currently have the 15th pick. There are already rumors that they could trade up.
Cowboys interested in Conley?
Prior to the news this week that Gareon Conley has been accused of sexual assault, the Ohio State corner was consider by many as a potential first-round pick. He could still get picked on Thursday night, and one team to watch is the Cowboys.
How to rebuild an NFL team through the draft

Report: Browns could target Davis Webb if they miss out on Mitchell Trubisky
The Cleveland Browns seem determined to land a quarterback early on in the 2017 NFL Draft, but they may need to look at options outside of Mitchell Trubisky. If the Browns are unable to trade up from No. 12 overall, one report claims they could look to draft former Cal star Davis Webb at the start of the second round.
Webb is projected to be taken somewhere in the second or third round, but it is starting to sound like he is a safe bet to go on the earlier side of those estimates. Here’s more from Tony Pauline of DraftAnalyst.com:
On Tuesday I posted that teams at the top of Round 2 were showing a lot of interest in Cal quarterback Davis Webb. Late Tuesday evening, a source close to the situation told me that if the Cleveland Browns do not secure Mitchell Trubisky in Round 1, Webb is likely to be the target with the 33rd selection.
Ideally, the Browns would like to take Myles Garrett at No. 1 overall and then grab Trubisky at No. 12. But with the New York Jets also in need of a quarterback and picking at No. 6, Cleveland may need to move up. There have been various reports that the Browns are looking to trade up, and you can read more about that here.
Webb, a transfer from Texas Tech, completed just over 61 percent of his passes during his senior season last year and threw for 4,295 yards, 37 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

Stanley Clarke Reaches Deep with New The Message Album June 29th
Press Release Source: Mack Avenue Records
Stanley Clarke – photo by Steven Parks
45 years after his album debut, four-time Grammy® Award-winning bassist Stanley Clarke shows he is still unapproachable on both the electric and acoustic, wielding a vision of fusion and funk, breakbeats and bass-interpreted cello suites with a little help from friends like rapper/beatboxer Doug E. Fresh and trumpeter Mark Isham. Backed by a young versatile band and a collection of tunes written in the midst of a tumultuous tour of Europe, The Message (available June 29 via Mack Avenue Records) swells with an abundance of strength, soul and astounding musicianship.
“I’m very excited about our work on this album. I wanted to include some of my band members’ contributions and the result is an album that is funky, melodic, musical, contemporary and fresh with a rich multi-genre influence,” Clarke commented. “The guys in this band are consummate young musicians with musical spirits that are very old.”
In 2015 Clarke brought a band through Europe consisting of keyboardists Cameron Graves and Beka Gochiashvili and drummer Mike Mitchell. When a terrorist attack in Tunisia prevented the band from continuing their tour (which was scheduled to go there next), they opted to hunker down in Paris and compose.
“We were in this great hotel and the owner was a fan,” remembers Clarke. “I said, ‘Can you put these three guys in a room where no one can hear them?’ He found a room and after two days, they wrote compositions that reflected their worldview and included their versatility in many different musical genres. A lot of this stuff I would have never written in a million years.”
A few days later the band entered ICP Studios in Belgium and recorded an abundance of material. Clarke returned to his home in Los Angeles with the tapes and began to tinker. “Once I got the raw material, I fleshed it out. My ability is to orchestrate and arrange. I’m very good with taking anything and turning it into something.”
Much of the material from their Paris adventure is collected on this album but the affair opens with a homegrown homage to several soulful great friends that Clarke has lost in the last few years including George Duke, Al Jarreau, Tom Petty, Leon “Ndugu” Chancler and Prince. Clarke slaps out a funky riff for “And Ya Know We’re Missing You” while renowned beatboxer Doug E. Fresh lays down an intrepid beat. A rare pairing that seems instinctual upon first listen.
“After the Cosmic Rain/Dance of the Planetary Prince” encompasses Clarke’s entire career and is the first on the album from those European sessions. The basis of the tune was written in the early ‘70s for his band Return to Forever, but this time the Planetary Prince is keyboardist Cameron Graves. The young keyboardist, a member of the West Coast Get Down phenomenon, has toured with Clarke for many years. His fleet-fingered tornado is the focal point of the performance. “Cameron played one of the most amazing synthesizer solos I heard in a long time. I had gotten blown out on synthesizer solos from all the fusion days in the ‘70s, but Cameron came up with a warm beautiful solo. One of the best synth solos I’ve heard in 10 or 15 years.”
Amid the barrage of drums and basses on “The Rugged Truth” is Gochiashvili, a native of Tbilisi, Republic of Georgia, who has toured with Clarke for the past five years. His piano solos in this piece hold a breathless array of eclectic ideas and impeccable technique, integrating seamlessly with Graves’ battalion of keys.
Now 21-years-old, Beka Gochiashvili was an award-winning child jazz piano prodigy and has already performed with many of the jazz greats of our time. He was brought to the US in 2008 with the help of Condoleezza Rice, then Secretary of State and an accomplished pianist herself. Rice brought Gochiashvili to New York to participate in auditions at the Juilliard School and at the Manhattan School of Music. Not surprisingly, he was accepted in both schools. He has released two of his own albums, the most recent of which is Beck Logic Project: Chillin’ in Batums.
“Heavy, heavy heavy,” says Clarke with a smile speaking of Gochiashvili. “Beka is a tremendous solo pianist, who I predict one day will be as influential as Keith Jarrett. He is truly a hard worker and dedicated musician. I’m very impressed with him.”
The recognizable voice of Steve Blum narrates “Combat Continuum,” an 8-bit fusion fantasy that steps back beyond the galaxy and into a realm that burns with energy.
In a band full of powerhouses, young Texan drummer Mike Mitchell stands out as an incredible force. “He’s probably one of the most energetic drum geniuses that I have ever played with. I’ve never seen a guy that is so creative with drums. If he continues down this path, he could very easily be a Tony Williams or Elvin Jones,” says Clarke.
Stanley Clark – photo by Raj Noalk
“The Message” and Bach’s “Cello Suites, No. 1” are two sides of the same coin for Clarke. He is as at home with the electric bass as he is with the upright. But they are still worlds apart. Here he ties them with an empathetic feel, virtuosic but controlled. “The Bach cello suite is like a serious thing to attempt. It’s a hard piece. I do it in the same key as the cello. I don’t change it to suit the bass or make it easier. I worked out the fingering and I’m just trying to make it sound pretty.”
The slow groove of “Lost In A World” is a laidback duet between vocalists Skeyler Kole and Trevor Wesley. Tight harmonies and Gochiashvili’s dreamy piano carry the tune on a cloud while “Alternative Facts” burns that same piano to the ground. The band is playful but centered. Gochiashvili shows off his acoustic chops with startling clarity and control.
“The Legend of Abbas and the Sacred Talisman” is a calming meditation from Clarke on upright bass and Gochiashvili’s piano. They dreamily float on the same wavelength, effortlessly drifting along as though they have played together for decades. The warmth and musicianship is undeniable as the ship points the way home to “Enzo’s Theme,” a track from the European session bolstered by the welcome additions of trumpeter Mark Isham and saxophonist Doug Webb.
The Message is unmistakably a Stanley Clarke record. Five decades of unapproachable bass mastery doesn’t come easy and Clarke has no interest in relinquishing his throne. Propelled by the youthfulness of his bandmates, Clarke reaches even deeper into his bag of tricks for an incredibly satisfying listen.
“Our message is simple. It is a message of love. There is nothing really profound about our message. It’s just love. A lot of artists have said it in their own way. This is ours.”
