I have two book recs and then a third I have yet to get my hands on (my local library doesn鈥檛 have it and I鈥檓 on SSDI /hj)

second: A Victorian Flower Dictionary by Mandy Kirkby
I haven鈥檛 read but have heard good things: Floriography: An Illustrated Guide to the Victorian Language of Flowers by Jessica Roux

Heliotrope
Heliotropium
devoted affection
Heliotrope is often associated with the greek myth about the nymph Clytie, who fell in love with Helios, who loved someone else. After Helios rejected her, she stripped herself and laid on the rocks without food or water, looking at the sun. After nine days, the gods took pity in her and she was transformed into Heliotrope.

Striped Carnation
Dianthus caryophyllus
I cannot be with you
Lousia Anne Twamley warns in her book 'The Romance of Nature' to be attentive with the carnation with love messages. She explains that in the ballad 'Carnations and Cavaliers' Lady Edith is given a flower to represent pure love which she gives back a presumably striped carnation, forgetting the meaning.
'The Pink, by Knight to Ladye given,
Prays her to be his Bride -
The proud carnation answering tells
That fervent player's denied.'
