Etymologically the term “soul” evolved from the Old English sawol, the Gothic saiwola and the Proto-Germanic saiwalo, meaning “coming from the sea,” or “belonging to the sea.” The etymology gives expression to the belief that the sea was a stopping place of the soul before its birth and after its death. Botticelli’s painting of Aphrodite’s birth from the foam of the sea is a representational depiction of this myth. The water from which souls emerge and to which they return is a metaphor for the source, or origin of life. Numerous creation myths refer to water as the original “matter.” Freud literalized the notion as the amniotic fluid; his literal idea can be extended by evolutionary theory which hypothesizes that life first emerged from the seas. Jung, however, felt that mythology expresses and elaborates upon internal psychic events; he, therefore, interpreted the references to water from which the soul emerged as analogous to the unconscious.

The Chinese version of the soul’s watery origins is the belief that at death the soul sinks to the earth and lives in the ground water near the Yellow Springs. These springs are the Land of the Dead, yet, paradoxically, the reservoir of life as well, and from there, having become rejuvenated, the soul comes back to life. In Homer, the afterworld is not underground but at the far end of the ocean, beyond where the sun sets. In both Nordic and Egyptian mythology, ships transport the soul to the land of the beyond.

In alchemy, Luna, the moon, governs the process of coagulatio. Traditional folklore of many cultures calls the moon the place where souls gather after death before they journey to higher spiritual realms; and it is also the place where spirits and souls take on material substance before their return to earth.

The moon is the alchemical source of moisture: “Luna secretes the dew or sap of life,” which ties in with the idea of the soul’s origins in the waters. (…)

In fantasy, myth and literature, the soul is usually personified as a woman. A phenomenological purview of her characteristics reveals that she likes diversity, the unique, the personal and the atypical. She is polyvalent, polygamous, polytheistic. In contrast, spirit prefers uniformity, similarity and abstraction; it is monotheistic, monogamous, and one. In addition, Soul is elemental, animistic, warlike, adventurous, romantic. She loves life, the adventure of it, and seeks experience and immersion in the hustle and bustle of daily existence.

Consequently, Jung defines Soul as “the archetype of life itself.” For Soul ties one to instinctive, material reality, to the earth, to country, church, community, family and personal relationships. She is responsible for our likes and dislikes, our loves and hatreds, our vocation and avocations. Soul is the source of artistic and intellectual pursuits, making one loyal to these endeavors. In the Slavic countries, hobbies, such as playing a musical instrument or painting, are said to be done “for the soul.” The Soul is also the font of religious devotion and of the mystic’s passionate desire for a relationship with God. And finally, Soul is the wise old woman of folklore and the Biblical Sophia, a personification of wisdom.

In her negative guise, Soul turns into a death demon, as depicted by the Sirens and the Lorelei. She can seduce human beings away from life, into the world of unreality, sterile fantasy, pedantic thought, insanity, depression and psychological or physical suicide. Here she reveals her ghostly side, the dark side of the moon, and becomes “the archetype of death.”

Mary Magdalene Sophia

In the ancient culture of the Celtic Church, the spiritual head of the Cosmic Christos Dragon Teachings for hierogamic union and the biological ascension mysteries were held by the female line of the Mother of Dragons, which later on included the lineage of the incarnation of Mary Magdalene Sophia. After the Roman invasion of Gaul, the Cosmic Christos Dragon Teachings were carried on underground through the secret sects of the Sisters of Avalon and some of the Benedictine monks who were masters of alchemy from their lifelong study of these teachings. Thus, these dedicated monks were responsible for choosing the building sites and drawing up the architectural blueprints which included esoteric Cosmic Christos Dragon Teaching ascension symbolism found throughout the ancient Gothic Cathedrals in France that are consecrated to Mary. Whether considered the mother of Christ or the wife of Christ, in this context Mary is given as a sovereign title and is esoterically known as the Mother of Dragons.

Sisters of Avalon

During the Yeshua and Mary Sophia Iron Age Christos Mission, they held 8D hierogamic union and were able to produce children. Her female descendants were known to have retained the Dragon Queen bloodlines of Avalon, and their male descendants became known as the Fisher Kings in Gaul, which later became France. During the next stage of the Christos Mission with the birth of King Arthur, his mother was from this same Dragon Queen bloodline, the Mother of Dragons, which descended directly from Mary Sophia Magdalene. This was later formed into a high priestess order known as the Sisters of Avalon. The heritage of the Sisters of Avalon as the High Priestess Order of the Mother of Dragons sourcing from Mary Sophia Magdalene was highly guarded by the underground representatives of the authentic Celtic Church or Nazarene sects. Thus, they hid the ancestral history of the female bloodlines of Christ through oral traditions and in some written manuscripts and historical artifacts that spanned locations between France, Ireland and Scotland.

The reanimation of the Triple Solar Goddess in her Solar Christ Mary form has been actively involved in the sequential activation of many Gothic Cathedrals across the globe that were originally built on Dragon Nodes in her name and Mary Magdalene Sophialineage.

As Solar Christ Mary returns into our world as the Cosmic Dragon, so do these buried histories rise into the awareness of the ancient Essene Celtic Church sacred texts of the Pearl Activation, along with many of the hidden cellular memories of our long-forgotten past.[6]

A/N: Finally was able to push past my burn out and wrote this. Delilah frustrated by the little alchemy she has done at Hogwarts, sets out to achieve the most plausible hardest achievement in alchemy for a sixteen year old.

Warnings: gross ingredients in the name of 'science'

Delilah fidgeted about with her quill, moving it smoothly between her fingers. Her alchemy professor was going over the theory of transforming base metals. Though she knew it already.

She would consume and study everything about alchemy and relate to it over the summer holiday. Delilah could recite every theory, technique, and invention by heart. Coming to Hogwarts, she had hoped to finally put all that knowledge into action. Even though they finally started brewing metals, Delilah still thought it was too basic.

"And that concludes today's lesson." The Professor finished, putting the broken chalk down.

The other students packed their books, tied them up with string, and left the classroom. Delilah approached her alchemy professor.

"Professor?"

"Yes, Miss Sweets. How may I help you?" He wiped away the board with a flick of his wand.

"I was wondering when we shall start brewing harder potions."

"Miss Sweets, are you finding my lectures too dull for your tastes."

"I don't mean that Professor, but rather that I want to be more intellectually stimulating. I want a real challenge." Delilah expressed rather excitedly.

"I see, but as you must know Miss Sweets, an important quality is patience in alchemy. Alchemy needs patience because of precision." The Professor put his hands on his back and emphasized each quality to hit the point. "Alchemy is not one must triffle with without the fundamental basics."

"Yes sir, I am aware of that." Delilah quietly said. It seemed that the Professor would not be on her side.

"Good day then, Miss Sweets."

"Good day to you too, sir."

As Delilah left the classroom, she whistled for her red squirrel, Athena, or as she affectionately called her, Thena. The squirrel climbed down from the gothic-styled arch frames of the door and onto her shoulder.

"Come on Thena, we're going to be brewing something amazing tonight."

At night, she and Athena left the Hufflepuff common room. The pungent smell of the kitchen wafted through the corridor, making her stomach growl despite eating earlier.

She crept through the dark corridors. Her long-time friend, Winona, had shown all the best secret places in trade for her secrets. Delilah required a hidden area to experiment, to practice alchemy like she had one back home. Her family had a multitude of rooms dedicated to experiments. Some consider it messy, but to her, it was home.

In the lower North-East corridors, hidden rooms were mostly unknown of their purpose. Delilah found a purpose in one of them, stashing away ingredients that she had either honestly collected from the forbidden forests or dishonestly stolen from the potions classroom. Mostly, Athena did the stealing so no one would notice the little critter.

Hidden under the floorboard, Delilah had stashed vinegar, salt, sulfur vive, and even dreaded urine there. Though that were some sources, she won't reveal how she obtained them. There was also another thing, a terrible deed she had done. She had snuck into the forbidden section of the school's library. It pained her deeply to take an alchemy book without permission, but Delilah promised that she would return once it had been used.

The book may not look like much though Delilah won't be fooled by the disguise. There was instruction, and the recipe for Panacea, handwritten by Georg am Wald himself.

It was an alchemist's greatest dream to brew a panacea. The cure of all cures and longer life, and Delilah will achieve it. Be the youngest to brew it ever. She had started the process a few days ago and tonight she would complete it.

This wasn't to get her name published in the news articles, but it was personal. If she could do this at sixteen years of age, imagine what she could do in the future.

"Thena, get the salt." She commanded. The squirrel chittered back at her and placed the salt next to her. Delilah put on an apron to ensure that her nightgown would remain clean and piled her thick wavy hair into a haphazard mess barely held in place by pins.

She followed the instruction precisely, melting a few spoons along the way; wooden and metal. The author notes that this may happen, so having several on hand would be better.

The room stunk, but that was to be expected. Her wand was tucked behind her ear, using it only when she needed to stir or float the ingredients into the pot.

The liquid changed color regularly, but it all matched the instruction. However, it was bubbling more than the ambitious young alchemist had liked.

Her feet ached from standing in the same spot. Though Delilah figured that achieving without pain would not yield anything, it was simply the price to pay.

The solution was done.

Delilah poured the thin red liquid into a small glass bottle. This should show the Professor of her evident talents.

"It's done, Thena." Delilah gleaned with delight and pride of her concoction. Athena was clearly tired and napped on her shoulder. She glanced over at her father's old pocket watch. "Merlin's beard. I better get back."

"Hmm." The Professor scrutinized the liquid considered to be Panacea. Delilah looked at him, seeking his approval for her ambitious work. "What did you say that you put in?"

"Vinegar." Delilah simply said.

The Professor shook his head and let out a chuckle. "I'm afraid to say, Miss Sweets that you haven't made panacea."

"I beg your pardon?!"

"You have made an effective yet alternative method to cure boils." He quickly cleared his throat but couldn't hide his amusement at the student's mistake.

"How?" Delilah exclaimed. "I followed the recipe exactly, not a gram more nor a gram less than required."

Though the smile didn't vanish from the alchemy professor. "I assume you found the notebook of Georg am Wald."

Delilah hesitantly gave a nod of admittance.

"The notebook actually belonged to George Wald. An easy mistake to make but like you, many ambitious students of before have done the same mistake believing they have found the recipe for Panacea."

The girl was mortified. How could she be so foolish and fall for the lies of a fraud?

Almost seemingly sensing her humiliation, the Professor assured her. "This may not be Panacea but it is the best cure of boils I have ever seen. I hope you continue to bring this level of dedication to your classes, Miss Sweets."

"Thank you, professor." Delilah left, and despite her disappointment in the Panacea, she still has confidence that one day, she will make an actual panacea.

Movie Review | House of Usher (Corman, 1960)

This was the first of the Edgar Allan Poe adaptations directed by Roger Corman, all of which have been helpfully put up on the Criterion Channel this month. I've watched a few of those this year and one of the things that's stood out to me is the way they've been defined by their confined settings. There's a consistent sense of morbid intimacy, that you're almost entombed along with these characters in whatever secluded manor they've decided to rot away the rest of their days in. There are also obvious budgetary benefits, as keeping the action to one setting would help save money, which could then be put towards things like costumes and props and lighting and camera setups which help make these movies look much more lavish than their budgets would suggest.

I haven't been approaching these in chronological order, and as a result this one feels a touch less refined, or at least it seems that the precise alchemy hasn't been quite figured out yet. For one thing, normally when you cast Vincent Price (whose salary took up a third of a budget), he should either be onscreen at all times or when he's not onscreen, all the other characters should be asking, "Where's Vincent Price?" (Or Roderick Usher, whatever.) Here, and perhaps this is a result of the source material (I admit it's been a very long time since I've read any Poe and don't think I read this particular story), he's filtered through the relatively less engaging Mark Damon (whose name should amuse fans of Tommy Wiseau). For what it's worth, he's quite enjoyable, sporting a bizarre bleach blond haircut and doing justice to the arch qualities of the dialogue. I suspect this and the other Corman Poe films are worth seeing in a theatre, if only to hear Price's rich, sonorous voice booming through the sound system. There's also sadly no Hazel Court, and Myrna Fahey plays things more chaste and gets fewer notes to hit, although she does throw herself into the climax when she makes Damon strongly reconsider the idea of marriage.

So perhaps this isn't the best one of these, but it still offers the same gothic horror pleasures as the others so I had a good time. And even if it doesn't hit the psychedelic heights of other Corman efforts (The Masque of the Red Death and the unrelated to Poe X: The Man with X-Ray Eyes), there's a great eerie nightmare sequence which piles on the coloured filters to atmospheric effect.

In The Name Of Violence: I'm having a lot of fun with the magic system. There's basically three linked but separate magic systems, alchemy, foreseeing and nymph magic. It's basically me trying to fit all my favorite magic systems tropes together in the most self-indulgent way possible, mainly magic as an art form, magic as science and ritualistic magic. Alchemy is mostly just a little weirder chemistry and not used in very magical ways, except in it's subgenre illusion magic, which is the primary form of magic used. Illusion magic is an art form in universe, used for storytelling, decoration etc. It's kinda like alchemy is the science you need to make paints and illusion is the art of painting. Foreseeing is very much tied to the religion and it's only legal for priests and knights (basically warrior priests). It's very ritualistic and much softer than alchemy or illusion magic (which as an art form is fairly soft itself) and to be able to do it you need to eat a piece of sky god's flesh, which gives you ability to open an extra eye in the forehead, which can glimpse into the future. Nymphs, kinda terrifying nature guardians, have magic that can create things from energy found in nature, so kinda elemental magic but with a price. They are rare and usually hostile to humans so not people don't really understand their magic.

Be All My Sins: I'm in general easily scared by horror, but I'm discoring I love to write it, at least like Gothic horror, with more emphasis on atmosphere than scares. I have before had body horror elements but it's fun when I can in this story really lean into them. I'm also loving the characters! There's will be a built up to them going full feral, and it will be so much fun to unravel these characters :'D

Golden Maiden, Silver Bride: Here my favorite thing is worldbuilding the elves/spirits. They are the personifications of nature and the source of magic. Their kings and queens are basically local nature gods. While they are source of magic, they can be pretty dancerous too, as they can curse people who anger them. The curse slowly eats flesh and when it takes over the body, it turns it into a malicious spirit. The gods can do massive curses that spread and take over large areas, even more when mobilizing their elves basically waging war. This doesn't happen often but last time it happened couple of thousand years ago, when the folk of winter caused apocalyptic mini Ice Age. I love figuring out a non-human societies of beings of magic their magic system inplications.

i find Claires is best for jewlery! [ their socks and legwarmers are child sizes so avoid those if ur plus size] they carry piercings, earrings and necklaces, fishnet gloves and loads of hair accesories! they also have a halloween selection which is usually pretty good. generally loads of stores will have halloween stuff out around that time of the year, so its worth checking out jewlery ztores around halloween for that!

dollar stores and party stores usually have loads of accesoiries too. these might be lesser quality but ive found loads of fishnets, leg warmers and stockings in the party section!

for clothes

again, party stores have loads of potential stuff you can use! my local one carries a rainbow of glitter tutus and a wall of different colored stockings and fishnets!

i reccomend second hand websites that are used locally! this is important! i find Vinted works for ppl in the UK, belgium, spain, and germany (i think?)

other second hand services you can use are ebay, facebook marketplace, poshmark, depop(not very accessible if u live in eu)

searching for specific items will bring less results than looking through loads of results, so dont hesitate to scroll through every single thing in just one category! "stockings" or "legwarmers" this might take time but people generally dont go out of their way to name stuff very specifically, so that awesome 2000s top is probably just gonna be called "shirt" !!

filtering stuff on size and color helps give less results to look through, most sites will let you hand pick this stuff.

ofcourse try to search stuff in the language the app primarily uses, and if it serves multiple places try stuff in different languages ! sometimes people will even mass-spell a word incorrectly (try "legwarmers" AND "leg warmers"! u might get different results!)

i find sorting results on Brand works well too, just look at all the results for "Claire's" per example.

- Lupin: 🤑🤠💍  These are all oneshot ideas, between 5-15K each. If you want to vote for a specific idea, send me the emojis and the number of the idea.

Born from the idea that Goemon and Zenigata probably couldn’t be an item, my brain decided to come up with how I could write for them. Goemon’s teaching an ikebana class as part of his training, and Zenigata shows up as a student on forced recreational leave for his health from the ICPO. Zenigata wins the samurai’s heart through flowers. But what happens when Lupin and Jigen find out? (Only good sexy things, I promise. These beans are in a healthy polycule--be gay, do crimes) (WIP)

Jigen/Lupin, but it's Jigen deciding to seduce Lupin while wearing his own Lupin disguise. The thief is waaaaay too into it, and some artistry is taken with the sex so that they don't mess up the disguise too much during their encoutner.

Jigen/Zenigata/Lupin where Jigen has some fantasices about Zenigata, but is pretty sure they'll never happen. Tells Lupin about them. Suddenly the fantasies are coming true, in the middle of a heist, and Jigen doesn't what to do except get swept up in the moment and enjoy. Plot twist, it's Lupin dressed up as Zenigata granting all his gunman's dreams. Plot twist again, Zenigata catches them at it.

Zenigata/Lupin, where Lupin keeps doing good things in illegal ways and Pops has to find a way to punish him for it. Good thing for Pops Lupin's a masochist?

Trans!Lupin and Trans!Jigen premise: Jigen cares for Lupin after the master thief has top surgery, since Jigen has Been There and Done That. Caring, sweet, and a little sexy. Lupin is a much better patient than Jigen.

The one time Zenigata caught Lupin in an alley and kissed him and it was Jigen in disguise. Things get sexy anyway, and Zenigata has crushes on two thieves now. Lupin and Jigen "kidnap" him later for an evening of taking care of their inspector.

The background plot of Jigen's Gravestone where we see Jigen think he's done for and try to leave Lupin. Our thief has none of it, and we get to relish in the inherent eroticism of Lupin sitting in sniper fire, knowing Jigen's got his back. This is the moment I think Jigen finally believes he can be with Lupin forever.

I love the idea of something longer and more plot driven like a Lupin special where Lupin ends up in hot water and Jigen and Fujiko have to work together to save him. Jigen and Fujiko have such an interesting relationship. They're both partners of Lupin, they don't really like each other, they constantly screw the other over, but when it really matters they take care of each other. I'd like to see that highlighted a little more and also give them space to call each other out and bicker. Nothing sexy between them, but maybe a really interesting threesome with Lupin and Fujiko in a strap on once they save their boy.

- Sonic Vampire Novelist Coffee Shop AU: 📚☕💐

Shadow is an immortal vampire who has seen the world change for the worse too many times. These days it feels like he only lives for his coffee dates with Rouge, another immortal who loves each new era they encounter, warts and all. He has to admit that the book series she got him into speaks to him, at least. If someone in this era can understand him without meeting him, it can’t all be bad. But he hardly expected the goofy blue barista at the new coffee place to understand him the way those books do.

This is a novel length romcom romp with some big feelings about what it means to watch as things change, grow, and die. Expect lots of Big gothic feelings from this one, emotionally charged kissing, and overly-adoring sex. But also expect shenanigans from everyone in the coffee shop, which include Rouge, Amy, Tails, Knuckles, Cream, and more.

- Sonic Blazamy, "Like the Sun": 💖🌸💎

Amy Rose has been in love with Sonic for a while.

Or has she?

When the Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Shadow, and Silver are trapped as the fuel sources for Doctor Eggman’s newest evil scheme, Amy teams up with Blaze, Rouge, and Cream to save them. With Sonic out of the picture and Amy fulfilling his role, was she ever really in love with him? Or did she just want to be like him?

This is a novel length epic romance with lots of competent women and lots of romantic Blazamy content. Expect flowery hopes and dreams, badass self-actualization, and glancing hand touches that give way to cuddly and sweet sex.

- Persona 5: 🗡🍛☕

After bringing down the Metaverse twice, Ryuji didn’t think graduating high school and figuring out what to do with his life would be so hard. Akira’s back in town, and the gang’s more-or-less all in Tokyo, but everyone else seems to have a plan while Ryuji just floats. How’s he supposed to change the world when he’s not a phantom thief anymore?

This is a novel length fic that addresses how powerless one can feel being just one person in the face of all the corrupted systems and bigotry the world has to offer. It’s about holding on to what you believe in, working through the doubt, and fighting your way to a better tomorrow with the power you do have. The whole gang is queer, featured relationships being Mako x Ann, Ryuji x Akira, Futaba & Yusuke as platonic life partners. Akira is polyamorous and omnisexual, Futaba’s asexual and aromantic while Yusuke is demisexual and very romantic, Makoto’s a lesbian, Ann and Ryuji are bi, and Haru’s pansexual, demisexual, and aromantic. They’re one giant band of queer Phantom Thieves, and even if they’re not really doing the Metaverse thing anymore, they’re still gonna save the world!

Also, I’m gonna make Makoto not a cop. That super didn’t age well. Zenkichi and his boss can work on making them better/abolishing them for other better organizations.

- Hades Game: ❤️‍🔥💀

Oneshot. I just really need to elaborate on the threesome you can have with them in-game, okay? Healthy and canon poly relationships are so few and far between, so often I have to do a ton of groundwork to explain why it’s working in the fic, but NOT WITH THESE KIDS!

Get ready for Meg helping Zag and Than be better at expressing their feelings, lots of kissing, and probably pegging.

- Castlevania Animation Trevor/Sypha/Alucard: 🧛🏰🛌

Castlevania gave Alucard a threesome last season, and I just really need S4 to give me him being taken care of by his partners. They’re probably not going to give it to me, so I’ll need to do it myself. This is just an everybody loves Alucard oneshot, with the gang’s signature banter (to an extent), Sypha being sexy, and Trever being remarkably sincere. This fic is gonna feel like that Ann Hathaway picture with Trevor kissing Alucard and Sypha holding the end of Trevor’s whip while she leans her head on Alucard’s shoulder adoringly.

- Devil May Cry Nico/Lady/Trish: 💋✨😈

Nico’s gay, okay? Like really, really gay. And Lady’s bi and not into men who make her pay bills, but very into women who make amazing guns for her and demonesses with hearts who fight by her side. Trish is ace, but loves people and is pretty attached to Lady at this point. Plus it’s cute when Lady blushes and says nice things like they’re insults. I don’t have super solid ideas for them yet, and I envision these more like a polycule where Lady’s with Nico and with Trish but they’re not with each other more than seeing it as a threesome, but who knows what might happen. This is probably 1-2 oneshots depending on ideas, but might turn into a series of oneshots if people are interested (or I can’t control myself and inspiration strikes).

- Post FMA:B Blind Roy & No Alchemy Ed: 👀👑🙏

This is actually an old novel-length fic I wrote ages ago and didn’t post that didn’t turn out well because I was new to writing sex when I first wrote it. The plot is good, and is all about Roy learning to work with his blindness to reclaim his ambition of being Fuhrer and changing the system to something that actually cares for its people. He and Ed reconnect, fall into bed, and both set about working through their respective traumas about being “useless” having lost their sight/alchemy. They go to Xing as an ambassadorial party to offer Amestris’s collaboration on Al and May’s Alkahestry experiments--and uncover a plot that might threaten both kingdoms.

- Age of Calamity continuity Mipha x Revali: 🦚🐟💘

The first time Revali noticed Mipha, it was in the heat of battle. She stole his mark, taking them down with a flurry of quick blows from her spear. Violence rained from her like water--and then she healed him on her way to her next battle. No questions, no conditions, just pure kindness. The usual need to measure himself against those around him was quiet in her wake. And Revali couldn’t understand it. But how to get to know more about her? A fish and bird may fall in love, but where would they live?

This fic could be a oneshot or novel length depending on how far down the hole I fall. I need it to cover time, but it could be done in linked vignettes or with actually covering events in detail. I may elect to do a oneshot just to get it done and out of my system faster. So much fic to write, so little time.

Expect trans!Revali, polyamorous Zoras, scary competent Mipha, songbird Revali, love confessions that are made up entirely of berating Link for not loving Mipha the way she wants him to, and breaking these characters a little outside of their assigned roles in BotW and Age of Calamity. I just think Urbosa should kiss women and Zelda’s mom should get more development and maybe a name or something. Also, lightning imagery/metaphors/play.

It also went way over my head that Riju wasn’t Urbosa’s daughter the first time I played BotW, so now I want to write about the Gerudo queen who refused to produce an heir. The Gerudo are fascinating and have a very interesting cutlure, but I think it could be examined from a nonbinary perspective that rejected pregnancy and wanting to find a husband. Not in like a hateful way, but in a way that examines if that’s really right for everyone. There’s that shop in town that sells Voe armor, after all. Maybe finding a husband and having children isn’t something you have to do if you don’t want to. And Urbosa really doesn’t want to.

the longer answer:  interestingly enough, as much as i hate him, this topic and fixation on vampires captured the attention of sigmund freud.  i had the misfortune of reading his papers and insights on this phenomena during my research on vampire folklore and the human psychological draw toward vampiric fiction. that, however, is not where i’ll be taking my essaying today.

instead, i point out that the count often takes the role, both in the book and in other media (such as castlevan.ia, van hel.sing (especially to both his children and toward victor frankenstein), of the knowledgeable mentor-figure, even if he doesn’t mean well by it in the end.   he is the one who teaches unsavory magicks, the one who funds research into the unknown and into alchemy to bring back the dead,  or simply teaches science to hungry minds.  he can be seen as cold and strict, or loving but distant.  but no matter what, the count is almost always depicted in this role, or in wanting the role (2004).  this was also the case in the lugosi films, both in drac.ula’s daughter and mark of the vampire in 1937.  

think about many vampire characters: can you see them viewing the count as an almost paternal figure? like an old grandfather, a father figure, a mentor figure, or just a distant relative?         not just because of his being the progenitor, i personally believe that it comes from his subversion of the typical trope shown in most media of these mentors ( especially in gothic fiction ) being a symbol of toxic masculinity.    it is also in his appearance; the allusion that he is painted, that he wears lacquer, has long hair that is absent from covering his forehead, paints his nails, and adhered to fashioned “feminine” beauty norms at the time.  

hell, there was even an entire british show called young dracula that showcased the count in this exact way, and as the father of several young vampires.  as played by keith lee-castle.  ( click to view )   .   in other media as well do we see older vampires being cast into the role of father figure, usually both doting (at first) and then the source of some betrayal ( under.world, castl.evania, etc. )  - if you’re reading this, why do you suppose this is. send me an im, i’d love to discuss it.

Delve: Count's Castle

This is the Castle of a strange Count, very well known and even feared throughout the neighboring regions. The Count is very reserved and rarely seen outside of his domain; some even believe that he is some sort of cultist, possessed by a demon, or even a vampire. Whichever the nature, he is usually blamed for every mishap and horror that plagues the surrounding villages... Although quietly, lest he focus his attention on us, the commoners say in fear.

The Castle has supernatural abilities of its own; Rumors say that it can disappear and reappear in different locations and points in time. Of course, the heavy mist and dangerous tangle woods that surround the palace make these claims hard to prove right or wrong. Most of the times it cannot even be seen through the fog; It's on the rare full moon of a cloudless night that its silhouette appears to rise ominously as a shadow over the cliffside.

Many have ventured into the Castle, through different entrances and areas, and with different objectives. Some went looking for missing wives, others to banish a supposed demon or source of blasphemies. None ever returned.

Delving into the Castle

The Count's Castle is an Epic Delve. Locating your Objective usually means confronting the Count himself in his throne room, but your heroes might have different reasons to explore his castle. Adjust your objectives accordingly, but keep in mind that if you are looking to face the Count himself, the castle is a maze of Epic proportions.

The Theme and Domain of the Count's Castle vary a lot, depending on the area (the palace's geography is very varied and... odd).

Castle Zones

The different Zones of the Castle (and their recommended Theme/Domain) are:

Lower Zones

Entrance and Gardens: Wild Tanglewood

Alchemy Laboratory and Common Quarters: Corrupted Stronghold

Marble Gallery: Ancient Ruin

Colosseum: Infested Underkeep

Underground Zones

Underground Caverns: Infested Cavern

Abandoned Mine: Haunted Mine

Catacombs: Corrupted Barrow

Upper Zones

Library: Ancient Stronghold

Clock Tower: Haunted Stronghold

Chapel: Hallowed Ruin

Keep and Count's Throne room: Fortified Underkeep

They are roughly interconnected in the order of the list above, but there are many secret passages that you could find that connect one Zone with another (from the same subgroup or an adjacent subgroup). As a rough estimate, assume that each Zone is comprised of at least 5 areas or rooms that you can Delve into.

How to traverse Zones

After traversing 5 areas when you Delve the Depths, or when you Find an Opportunity and obtain a result of 1-25 ("The terrain favors you, or you find a hidden path") after at least having traversed 3 areas, you can envision a passage to a different Zone (in the same Zone subgroup or in an adjacent subgroup). If you do, switch the Delve Theme + Domain to those recommended for the Zone. A result of 99 or 00 in the roll of the Area: Features Oracle table could also be interpreted as a Zone transition.

Alternate Entrances

The main and usual entrance is through the main gates, across the twisted Garden that surrounds the castle. But there are other passages that connect the outer world with the Abandoned Mines and the Underground Caverns zones. A savvy adventurer that Gathers Information might find out about these secret entryways before the Delve.

Denizens of the Castle

The Denizens in the Count's Castle are as varied as the zones and their themes and domains. As a rule of thumb, any creature that fits in the gothic horror or grimdark fantasy genres would feel right at home in the castle. Legendary creatures of mythology like Gorgons, Minotaurs, Cyclops and Hydras also have their place in certain zones of the castle.

From 0 to 3 Progress boxes: Low Risk - Denizens are Troublesome or Dangerous

From 8 to 10 Progress boxes: High Risk - Denizens are Formidable or Extreme

Treasure

The Count collected all sorts of treasure and art throughout his very, very long life. Adventurers would most likely find interesting pieces of equipment and magic items in zones like the Laboratory, the Marble Gallery and the Library.

It's alive!

If you somehow manage to escape from the Castle to return at a later time, don't expect it to be the same or have the same layout as it did the first time. As per Discover a Site, when returning you'll have to clear a number of Progress boxes. "The Count's Castle is unmappable", some rumors say. It's as the Castle's corridors twisted and changed, its halls shifted as if it were a living creature. Maybe it is, in a way.
