When Kimmer ‘n I first started dating, I’d already made Halloween a bit of a production at my parents’ house in Magnolia. They had this porch out front, see, and each year I’d do different things to make it Halloween cool for the neighborhood kids. The experience even came with its own soundtrack of ghostly sounds, courtesy of a cassette tape I’d bought for the occasion.

One problem, though.

If I did anything to the front porch in the days leading up to Halloween, kids would sneak onto our property and steal stuff. I lost some pretty great Halloween masks this way.

So.

The rule quickly became: everything has to be set up and taken down on the 31st. Kind of a pain... but completely doable once Kimmer hit the scene.

And so the displays grew and grew.

The year I remember most is the one during which we bought these “walls” from Display & Costume in Northgate. The walls were fashioned to look like the stone walls of a castle… only they were made of 4’x8’ cardboard. We bought two or three of these and tied them to the roof of my car which was considerably shorter than the 8-foot length of cardboard affixed to it.

Then we drove off.

Except.

Driving the speed limit even just leaving the parking lot caused the leading edge of cardboard to lift and bend straight up against the air’s resistance. So we had to creep ever so slowly in the curb lane, my left arm hugging the cardboard to the roof.

I did this all the way back to my folks' house in Magnolia.

Turned out magnificently, by the way. These walls looked legit.

From the front, they were bathed in blue light from down below. Into the wall set up on the right side of the porch, we carved a window and suspended masks behind it, lit with a friend’s strobe light from below.

On the ground next to the front door, a skull. Still glowing greenishly from the light to which we’d exposed it.

There was a soundtrack, of course. The Spooky Sounds of Halloween that I looped from my dad’s cassette tape player, taking a long length of RCA cable he’d fashioned and stringing it from the back of the player across our living room to the front closet, under the closet door and up, into our mail slot and out the top end dangling down into the back of my boom box strategically placed behind solid castle walls.

That wasn’t all, of course. Strewn every which way across the front yard were 10-20 spooky little jack ‘o lanterns lit from the inside with flickering candles. The kids loved it.

Up at our home north of Lynnwood, we continued the tradition, culminating in a walk-through garage display to creepy, so ghastly sounding, that Linzy’s cousin, dressed as Mrs. Noah complete with a model ark cradled in her arm)… well, her cousin wouldn’t go anywhere near it.

Needless to say, it was a hit in our neighborhood. 

Tons of fun to do.

But it was also an expensive endeavor that ate up a lot of time and energy. By ’n by, we lost our enthusiasm for our long-standing tradition and decided, finally, to put that tradition to rest.

We ended up giving away hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars of Halloween set pieces, masks, costumes, and decorations.

After that, we lost interest in Halloween altogether, abandoning our home during the evening to take Linzy and friends trick or treating at the mall whilst we had dinner nearby.

Somewhere in there, Anthony’s Seafood Grill at Alderwood Mall starting offering 2-for-1 coupons for dinners on Halloween Night… so that became our tradition as, miles away, costumed children passed by our darkened house for more likely prospects up the street.

And such was today.

The only difference was that we actually considered getting some candy and staying in this evening to hand it out to the kids. As things worked out, though, we headed out between 5 and 6... and didn’t get back ‘til 930ish.

So like Linus in his pumpkin patch, we missed Halloween once again. 

Now, we didn’t spend all that time at Anthony’s. We actually went to our local Wal*Mart to pick up a couple bags of candy for the kids. Of course, we picked candy that we liked, so... yeah.

Afterwards, we stopped in at the Value Village next door so Kimmer could do a routine looking for stuff whilst I went about finding things to Instagram.

After that... we were off to the Lynnwood Rec Center to work out for a half hour or so. Then... Goodwill down the street for more poking about and significantly more Instagramming. Then... Romano’s Macaroni Grill at the mall for appetizers and drinks.

Yeah. The entire day was chill. Right on into night.

What can I say?

It’s how we like our Halloweens served up these days.
