What program do you use for audio editing?
So technically two!
Mainly, I use the program “Shotcut”! I use this for the majority of cutting, editing and layering audio tracks! It’s same one I use for video editing. It’s not perfect (it can in fact be very janky at times) but it is completely free, which is the upside, and once you get used to the interface you can kind of wrestle it into doing most things.
If I ever need to modify the audio clips themselves however (pitch shifting, slowing down, cleaning up background noise, etc) I tend to use “Audacity”! I find the interface a little more difficult to work with personally so I really only use it if I have to, but it’s totally worth getting if you need to modify the sounds in any way (I used it a ton with things like the Cantripped Cupid One Shot, or making the sniffer sounds for the Jamie ambiance, for example).

I just witnessed the most beautiful bit of soundscaping. In season 2 episode 14 of lucifer, 8 minutes before the end of the episode, lucifer is messing about with a newton’s cradle as the end of a scene. The clicking sound of the cradle gradually morphs into the ticking of a clock as the camera cuts to a different scene. It’s just so smooth and so well done
#lucifer tv#soundscaping#thank you Alexander J Newall for making me listen to sound design more carefully#turns out actively engaging with aspects of media you don’t usually pay much attention to makes things more fun#as someone fascinated by the use of music in film and tv it’s weird I never engaged with wider sound design earlier

#I LOVE THIS SO MUCH#BUT ALSO THIS ISNT THE ONLY PLACE WHERE CLOCK#there is a clock in elias’ office! the only time you can’t hear it is the FIRST time the setting is elias’ office when sasha goes to warn-#-him about worms. and i assume it’s not there because it just hadn’t been established as a set piece yet#but you can hear it in the barnabas statement episode and the one where elias is reading jons dreams#and in every other episode where the setting is in elias’ office#the only two settings with the clock is elias office and jons hospital room#which is why i think that martin is working in elias’ office during s4. because you can hear the damn clock#and i think it drives him insane to work from the desk of a man he hates#im so sorry. im really normal about this clock. it’s my favourite set detail in tma#this is absolutely not to take away from the original post. because i absolutely adore this outlook on it#i love everything that has to do with the clock. i am autistic about ticking noise in tma#please talk to me about these clocks my dms are open

I dont think I've seen any posts about this, so I'll ramble about it. In season 4, when Jon is in hospital, we hear the ticking of the clock in his room. It's the first time we hear this sound, and it's not present anywhere else
EXCEPT, when we get to Martin's statements later in the season, when he is going into the Lonely, there is this same ticking. Martin's perception of the Lonely has the same background noise as the hospital room where Jon lay during his coma. That's the first place Martin felt so truly alone that it started to affect him, and that sound just keeps hauting him throughout the entire season

A reef that has been degraded—whether by coral bleaching or disease—can’t support the same diversity of species and has a much quieter, less rich soundscape.
But new research from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution shows that sound could potentially be a vital tool in the effort to restore coral reefs.
A healthy coral reef is noisy, full of the croaks, purrs, and grunts of various fishes and the crackling of snapping shrimp. Scientists believe that coral larvae use this symphony of sounds to help them determine where they should live and grow.
So, replaying healthy reef sounds can encourage new life in damaged or degraded reefs.
In a paper published last week in Royal Society Open Science, the Woods Hole researchers showed that broadcasting the soundscape of a healthy reef caused coral larvae to settle at significantly higher rates—up to seven times more often.
“What we’re showing is that you can actively induce coral settlement by playing sounds,” said Nadège Aoki, a doctoral candidate at WHOI and first author on the paper.
“You can go to a reef that is degraded in some way and add in the sounds of biological activity from a healthy reef, potentially helping this really important step in the coral life cycle.”
Corals are immobile as adults, so the larval stage is their only opportunity to select a good habitat. They swim or drift with the currents, seeking the right conditions to settle out of the water column and affix themselves to the seabed. Previous research has shown that chemical and light cues can influence that decision, but Aoki and her colleagues demonstrate that the soundscape also plays a major role in where corals settle.
The researchers ran the same experiment twice in the U.S. Virgin Islands in 2022. They collected larvae from Porites astreoides, a hardy species commonly known as mustard hill coral thanks to its lumpy shape and yellow color and distributed them in cups at three reefs along the southern coast of St. John. One of those reefs, Tektite, is relatively healthy. The other two, Cocoloba and Salt Pond, are more degraded with sparse coral cover and fewer fish.
At Salt Pond, Aoki and her colleagues installed an underwater speaker system and placed cups of larvae at distances of one, five, 10, and 30 meters from the speakers. They broadcast healthy reef sounds – recorded at Tektite in 2013 – for three nights. They set up similar installations at the other two reefs but didn’t play any sounds.
When they collected the cups, the researchers found that significantly more coral larvae had settled in the cups at Salt Pond than the other two reefs. On average, coral larvae settled at rates 1.7 times (and up to 7x) higher with the enriched sound environment.
The highest settlement rates were at five meters from the speakers, but even the cups placed 30 meters away had more larvae settling to the bottom than at Cocoloba and Tektite.
“The fact that settlement is consistently decreasing with distance from the speaker, when all else is kept constant, is particularly important because it shows that these changes are due to the added sound and not other factors,” said Aran Mooney, a marine biologist at WHOI and lead author on the paper.
“This gives us a new tool in the toolbox for potentially rebuilding a reef.”
Adding the audio is a process that would be relatively simple to implement, too.
“Replicating an acoustic environment is actually quite easy compared to replicating the reef chemical and microbial cues which also play a role in where corals choose to settle,” said Amy Apprill, a microbial ecologist at WHOI and a co-author on the paper.
“It appears to be one of the most scalable tools that can be applied to rebuild reefs, so we’re really excited about that potential.”"

one band of brothers 2001 missing scene i can see so clearly in my head is like. okay so at the beginning of the episode they found some warehouse full of stolen/stored nazi art. and the one nix took for himself was like from the romantic period of a medieval looking woman welcoming her battle weary crusader husband home. and hes this knight sitting down and shes kneeling in front of him washing his face with a clean cloth
and then at the end of the episode winters comes home to their billet, filthy and covered in mud and nix is waiting for him. and they dont say anything you just hear the rustle of clothes, the sound of water being sloshed as lewis puts dick in a chair at the kitchen table and sits him down and kneels in front of him, and gingerly peels off dicks muddy jacket and boots and wets a clean rag in a basin on the table and delicately starts to clean his face. again theres no dialogue or even background music all we hear is the sound of nix cleaning dicks face as hes on his knees in front of him. and then pan out and we see the painting leaning against the wall
#also obsessed with the use of sound and soundscapes on this show like all you hear in the foreground is the sound of a soldier breathing#while in the background you can distantly hear the pop pop pop pop of gunfire its sooo good#amanda.doc#winnix#band of brothers#okay i really have to get back to work now. im workign from home today and its like . well#blog thesis.

the fact that they made it illegal to make ads louder than programs on tv in 2010 but haven't updated it to apply the same regulation to streaming. who do i have to call.
#jack facts#like do they think we don't notice#i truly do hate it here#i really do think that we should get to a ''you ruined it for everyone'' threshhold with ads at this point tbh#circulating ads should be a need based allowance#below a certain nw you can circulate as many ads as you want provided they follow guidelines#then above a certain nw you get a quota. you can have x number of ads circulating at a time.#and i don't mean distinct different ads that can be put wherever. no. if you have an ad on youtube that counts as one#and if you put the SAME AD on a different platform or tv channel or at the fucking gas station pumps or on a billboard or ANYWHERE#each different instance of the ad counts as another ad in your quota!#& if you have like a 1min skippable + a 30sec unskippable v of the same ad on the same platform. that counts as two. FUCK you.#and then above another nw line. you cannot have ads at all. bye you don't need them they serve no purpose they are just annoyances.#also paying influencers to hawk your shit counts as ads! fuck you!! paid word of mouth is not actual wom that is also an ad! fuck you!!!#oh u want ppl to rec ur product & u don't have any ad spots left?? well sugar you better have a fucking good product then lol :) fuck you#also if a co breaks an ad reg that co and any co it owns/parents can never make another fucking ad ever again in its existence#AND if a ceo breaks an ad reg w one co then disbands it and makes a new co and breaks ad reg w that one#then the CEO or any co they have ANY % ownership or investment in can never make an ad ever again. FUCK you.#charities/nonprofits and sole proprietorships get one (1) appeal to a total ad ban#that's IT!! ENOUGH!!!!! ENOUGH!!!!!!!! FUCK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!#AND ONE MORE THING. ''pay us not to see ads on our platform/app/other thing'' should also be illegal.#''pay us for basic ass functions'' illegal. pay to win. illegal. sale/product announcements in things that are not press. illegal.#creating an ad or listing for something that doesn't exist and only manufacturing it after it is purchased. illegal.#ads that are full screen when a user has not already selected full screen on a video player. illegal.#pop up ads. illegal.#ads with audio on a platform that doesn't. illegal. video ads on a platform that doesn't have video. illegal.#ads w epilepsy triggers. illegal everywhere forever always w out needing to be reported by consumers. cannot be circulated in the 1st place#ads w graphic violence or soundscapes that mimic it. see epilepsy triggers.#ads for things that are not actually consumer products. illegal.#anything else u want to circulate like an ad must go thru other regs to qualify as psa or edu. if it doesn't qualify tough shit get fucked.#[insert gif collage of people talking extensively while wildly gesturing for emphasis here]

i downloaded that app that lets you customize your own soundscapes because i was like well this probably still won't be for me but i'll try it out just to see. first i set up a cafe with loud babble so i could eavesdrop on the table next to me, but there was only about 2 minutes of recorded audio. so once i memorized the conversation, i moved on to an irish coastal seascape, where i discovered that you can set the sliders to "drowning in the open ocean." that legitimately relaxed me so much that my headache went away but after about 20 minutes my brain adapted enough for the Voices (TM) to return, so i turned to a thunderstorm where all the thunder sliders were turned up to 100% power. so you feel like you're in the middle of bullshit tornado country. after all this i discovered there's a haunted mansion soundscape already so. i guess i'll get some mileage out of this thing yeah.
#app is myNoise. not a sponsored post i just figure someone will ask.#i don't know how to make any of the other soundscapes on there have enough peril to put me to sleep but we'll see.#context for ppl who havent been following me forever: guided meditations reassurances and peaceful soundscapes Freak Me The Fuck Out#conversely horror/danger makes my brain go 'oh that's what i'm sensing. this fake sound. we're in no real danger. goodnight 💕'#is this backwards for most people. yes. does it work for me. unequivocallyyy
