Gestalt Principles (11.10.2014)
'Gestalt' is a psychological term which means "unified whole". This relates and references ideas of visual perception developed by German psychologists (Wolfgang Von Goette, Mach, Ehrenfels, Wertheimer, Kohler, Koffka and Lewin) in the 1920s.
Gestalt means when individual components of a whole image when identified have different characteristics to the complete picture.  eg. describing a tree - the trunk, branches, leaves and roots. When you observe a tree, you're not conscious of all the independent parts, only the whole (in this case, the tree), the parts take secondary importance although they are perfectly visible. Principles.
Proximity - things closer together are seen as belonging together.
Similarity - things that share similar visual characteristic (shape, size, colour, value) will be seen as belonging together. In addition, when something stands out of this group, it is considered an 'anomaly'.
Common Fate - Proximity and similarity are in place, then a movement happening and the image begins to move down the page. They change grouping.
Continuation - When the eye is compelled to move through one object and continue to another. Like looking at an 'X' and instead of seeing four separate lines, you see two crossed lines.
Closure - When a full image is not complete but there is enough secondary information to complete the whole picture.
Area and Symmetry (Figure and Ground) - Two overlapping figures perceived as one while the larger image out of the two is seen as the 'ground'.

What is a Sound Designer? (09.10.2014)
An extremely open way of beginning our lecture. This question was surprisingly hard to answer on the spot as it feels like something we should just know without having to think twice about. However, the role of a Sound Designer isn't just to design sound, or edit sound, or even just portray the events on screen. It's more than that, it's to enhance the experience for the consumer and a Sound Designer should be much more than an engineer, a Sound Designer should be a professional story-teller.  Why should a Sound Designer be such an effective story-teller when their job is... well, sound? It is because film is not only a visual experience, in fact, some would go as far as to say that it is not even 50% of the experience. Watching a film with a very linear and diegetic soundtrack doesn't do anything to impact the consumer, it just tries to extend the realism. Good sound design is when conventions are broken and hyper-realism takes place, when the sound designer can fully immerse the watcher not only emotionally, but to such an extent when the sound can change the meaning of a visual on screen.
In the film "Drunk Punk Love" (starring Adam Sandler), Christopher Scaraboisio who was the sound designer for this picture really pushed out a lot of the realism of the introduction scenes to allow the consumers to focus down and connect with Sandler's role a lot more effectively, allowing the consumer to build strong emotions towards the stresses of the 'Barry' character on screen.  Another example is Saving Private Ryan, though the sound designer is still really well done in this feature, this focuses more on the realism of the intro sequence at the Omaha Beach graveyard as a sign of respect towards those that fought and were affected by casualties of war. The 1940s Omaha Beach sequence where we're introduced to Tom Hank's character uses sound as a tool of portraying fear and safety, primarily from Hank's perspective.
In both of these films the sound designers have used their skills to reflect the emotions of characters and to put ourselves in their positions so that we can allow ourselves to build upon an emotional tie to the characters.
Key points:
Primary emotions - fear, anger, sadness, happiness. Secondary emotions - personal and mental process / interpretation of the primary emotions
The Power of Sound is used to...
Suggest a mood and evoke a feeling.
Set a pace.
Indicate a geographical location.
Indicate a historical period.
Clarify the plot.
Define a character.
Control the realism.
Draw attention to detail.
Connect unconnected ideas.
Indicate changes in time.
Describe an acoustic space.

History of Sound for Picture (02.10.2014)
In today’s lecture we explored the evolution of sound within the cinematic world. Martin took us from the very beginning, when the first sounds were able to be captured and then played back to a listener. It was extremely enlightening to discover how the techniques that Edison used to first ‘record’ sound were further pioneered by the likes of Muybridge and the Lumiére brothers to create a contraption that could perform better than the previous. We listened to recordings taken from these machines such as the Grapophone, Phonograph and Kinetoscope.
One of the most inspiring moments of the lecture is when we explored the sound design work of Walter Murch within the cinematic legend Apocalypse Now. I had previous watched the film, however to explore it in it’s sound design and composition was amazing because of how much I never considered beforehand. In the beginning hotel sequence where the captain is having an almost hallucigenic experience, how the sound design was representing a different scenario to what was being shown visually, manipulating the consumer in a way where they could really feel the emotion and chaos within the scene. Storytelling, another point Martin touched on today, is the upmost important role of a sound designer. In saying this, the role of the sound designer isn’t to change the story’s narrative but to help develop and enhance on it, this mindset was really inspiring to me and it’s something that I’m definitely going to be considering quite strongly when it comes to developing my own sound design techniques.

Module Introduction (25.09.2014)
Upon beginning module MU2402 Sound for Picture me and the class was introduced to Martin Salomonsen, who would be our module tutor for this part of the degree. The lecture included a guide of the Module Handbook and an overview of our Film Mix with Log and Data Archive as well as the Documentation assignments for the year.
The group had an interesting discussion on the theory of sound for picture and post-production that sparked a lot of inspiration for the module. It opened my eyes a lot to some of the theoretical aspects of post production in terms of being able to mix with our ears, purely with the ambience around us. The clips we watched of the sound design behind Inception and The Hobbit were very informative and really gave us an accurate idea of what to expect for the coming months on this module.  Feeling a lot of excitement and looking forward to getting deeper into the world that is sound for picture.
