soulapparition replied to your video “honestly. dandelion and geralt (also watch cells at work on netflix,...”
Ohhhhhh mY GOD. ACCURATE. EVEN THE EXTENSIVE KNOWLEDGE OF MONSTERS. omg
this is an alternate introduction to a little sacrifice
dandelion and essi: [walking]
geralt: [fighting a monster]
dandelion: hey!!!!!!!!!!!! it’s geralt!!
essi: you know him? the swordsman?
dandelion: yes, he’s the witcher geralt of rivia!! he’s very nice
geralt: [yelling in the background]
essi: what are you talking about? aren’t witchers just mutated anomalies who confuse justice with violence...?
geralt: [literally biting the monster, hey you can’t tell me he wouldn’t, he did that to the striga]
dandelion: >:0! that’s not true! he’s gentle when you talk to him...
geralt: [slices the monster into ribbons, breathing heavily and voice distorted from a potion]
dandelion: hey geralt!!!!!!!!!!!!
essi: what are you doing he won’t care
geralt: dandelion! hey! ... the girl next to you... is she your apprentice?
dandelion: that’s right!!
geralt: is that right? nice to meet yo--
monster: [isn’t dead]
geralt: wait, is it still breathing? [goes back to fighting the monster]
dandelion: you see, there are different types of monsters that witchers have to take on!!
essi:
dandelion: like strigas, werewolves, and other kinds!!
dandelion: hey geralt, tell her about it!!
geralt: huh? oh, sure. [while in mid-combat] witchers track a variety of monsters. trolls, wyverns, drakes, kikimoras, solpugas, vampires-- [to the monster] hey- -- manticores are a little rarer now... -- [to the monster] die! -- and then, you have your sentient creatures too, like mecopterans... but they’re harmless so i-- [to the monster] bastard! --
essi:
dandelion: some people are intimidated by geralt here, but he’s really such a nice guy!!
geralt: [unsheathes a knife alongside his silver sword] WeReN’T ExPeCtInG tHaT hUh ??
dandelion: so i think you should be friends!!!--
essi: dandelion, get out of the way! [they fall trying to dodge the blood spray]

but tbh i just started season 3 and. ok there are more parallels on an emotional level (i.e. where he actually. solves. the trolley problem. [F]).
also the part where he was like “i got a gumball from a machine!” and janet was like “did you chew it?” and he was like “oh... no.... missed opportunity...”

soulapparition replied to your post “ooh they missed such an opportunity to develop geralt’s character by...”
Goddamnit it hurts to watch. The VERYTEENY TINY moments Geralt seems to like him warm my goddamn heart. Why did they have to make geralt be such a dick. I’m watching this with my partner (who hasn’t read the books) and I’m constantly like, this would never happen. Geralt loves Dandelion just so u kno...Joey is KILLING it though. I do love him as Jaskier. I’m just starting to feel so bad about the way theyre giving Geralt chronic toxic masculinity syndrome and not letting him show LOVE to his BEST FRIEND. EVEN IF ITS IN HIS OWN WEIRD WAY.
exactly and considering they hyped up the idea that cavill nailed “geralt’s dry humor” ... it is very disappointing to see very little of that sarcastic bitter humor that geralt is so known for. we don’t get much development for geralt because a lot of his humor comes out when he speaks, and if he’s not speaking... to ... his best friend... then it’s a moot point. what is jaskier’s purpose as a character if he does not provide the reader with a chance to understand geralt better?
joey really had to take jaskier to the next level because he was at such a disadvantage with the writing team cutting out dialogue between geralt and jaskier, making them opposing parts instead of friends, so i felt like he had to make the character likable on his own and not just likable because he’s geralt’s friend. not that jaskier isn’t canonically likable, just that if geralt doesn’t speak to him, it cuts a lot of opportunity out for development on both ends.
in the edge of the world, we find that geralt is kinder than we may have originally expected... he’s patient with not only jaskier but all of the villagers of upper and lower posada, and he’s not bad in conversation. jaskier being there really allows geralt to have development as a character because we see a side of him that’s not out in the field slaying monsters, we see a side of him that wants to have genuine human interaction. similarly, jaskier is developed alongside geralt as he demonstrates a wide range of emotions that are influenced by his personality... cheerful, haughty, distressed, mischevious, in awe...
the witcher netflix team says “oh geralt actually doesnt have that much dialogue” but if you look at any of his parts with jaskier he is talking, he is responding and engaging him. he never just ignores him, that’s literally something that never happens in canon. even when he’s pissed off at him, he still engages him, and he pretty much even says more to him when he’s angry because he doesn’t have a filter holding him back lol
tldr its not about “omg they are cute together,” but rather that if geralt doesn’t interact with jaskier, his character is SO much more hollow and underdeveloped
at least we can thank the netflix series for demonstrating to us how terrible the witcher series would be if geralt didnt respect jaskier lmaooo

@soulapparition oh ur so kind... funnily enough this doesnt fit into any of my 5 ongoing gerlion plotlines/fic ideas so idk where to put it you know... if i ever think of context for this ill at least write out what’s happening before and after. this is probably earlier in their relationship because obviously geralt gets an invite and special guest VIP access to anything dandelion does ever, from concerts on stage to concerts given while he’s brushing his teeth.
i think there’s a nice contrast between geralt’s false persona of a despised killer and dandelion’s false persona of a beloved singer... and how geralt is actually a much more gentle person than people see him as, and dandelion is a much more... AHEM, difficult person than people see him as. and dandelion tries to keep up his own façade, posing as this noble lover, when he’s really SUCH a , as geralt says, a whoreson/son of a bitch/cynic/lecher/womanizer/liar.
it makes me think about what it actually means to love a person. you can love the IDEA of a person, but if you really love them, you’ll love them for who they are as a whole — you cant love just the dandelion that sings you also have to love the dandelion that gets flowerpots thrown at him and the dandelion that points out all of your own flaws too. (and i think that this is why dandelion’s romantic relationships with a lot of women never last, because ultimately they see him as this persona and not as a person, because he wants to keep up this persona. even with anna henrietta to whom he was very close, she didn’t know him for who he really was, and thus was lost in disappointment and anger when he turned out to be someone different).

I’m glad there might be more good gerlion content? But it DOESNT LOOK like it’s headed that direction. I checked out some of the new ao3 content and so much of it is clearly just based off the twn dynamic. And it’s so awkward and uncomfortable. I don’t know how to tell u guys for two people to be in love they have to treat each other well.

Yeeeeah I've been really excited about the influx of new fans and new content but I hate how so much of it embraces the ugly "awww he tells jaskier that he doesn't want to be around him, how cute!" mindset
put these two replies together bc theyre like. related
right like ghfsjkhgjfshkhdgsjka
i just find it so fucking annoying how no one, it seems, can even imagine a relationship in which men dont hate each other !!!!! bro FRIENDSHIP EXISTS

soulapparition replied to your photo “the hell is this and how can i unsee it. because i KNOW that cavill...”
That’s when the elf is like, he’s gonna lose is voice n jaskier gets scared. He says that all worried like, and geralt is (could be argued he shows care in this moment by Acting more urgent) like, we need a healer right the fuck now. I forget the exact line, but he presses the elf into telling him if there’s a sorcerer in town or not. And then immediately leaves w Jaskier to take him there. Despite the ‘holding him by the collar even though his neck is injured’ it’s probably the most care he shows for him the whole time. And he DOES show remorse for that ‘fillingless pie’ line later on. But not TO Jaskier, to yen and she makes a joke out of it. But he does feel bad about it. BUT I’m fairly sure..in the book, that geralt holds dandelion in front of him on Roach no? Because it’s the other way around in the show and Jaskier is just flopping around behind him. And I’m like ??!? So scared he’s gonna fall. But anyway I digress lol
oh legit. when they rode on roach together i was like what the fuck are you doing. thats not now you carry someone who can’t keep his head up on a horse. i finished the episode because i was really confused about when that whole oh valley of penis line comes in

soulapparition replied to your post “regis should not have suffered as much as he did in blood & wine. it...”
Agreed. I chose to trust Regis in BaW strictly because I KNEW book Geralt would. It didn’t feel right otherwise
love how geralt loved regis’s advice in the books. geralt NEVER does what people advise him to do. but when regis said “we should go through ygsith—” “you need to follow this druidic trial of humility—” geralt was like okay i’ll do it. i believe you.
technically regis’s advice in blood & wine is correct and sets the player on a “good path” (i.e., not going to see the unseen elder and instead tracking down syanna during the night of long fangs), his predictions about dettlaff’s behavior are off, but his advice is sound.
LOVE how geralt in blood & wine is portrayed as being skeptical and distrusting of regis. REAL moment from CDPR there. it’s in the same alley as geralt treating dandelion like a burden in the main game when he has to rescue him. it’s not gay if you absolutely dislike your best friends

“@soulapparition oh ur so kind... funnily enough this doesnt fit into...”
I totally understand. It was a beautiful little slice of life and love that made me want more but I totally get the difficulty of building an entire plot around it.
Akalshaks I agree. Truly loving someone involves all their flaws, all the things you DONT like. They’re both so much more to each other than their public image. It’s tru love
legit... idk how sapkowski did it, but it seems that each one of the short stories has a purpose to demonstrate something about the characters, their relationships, and the lore around them. if/when i start writing witcher fanfiction i want to try to emulate this style where there’s a short plot but a lot is demonstrated about the characters/something is “solved.”
i did like ONE gerlion fic a while ago where i tried to tackle this idea of why its important that dandelion writes about geralt etc but i think it got muddled (idk i dont read my own writing o_o im very noncommittal to this because i used to be committed to fic writing and it made my life difficult).
this is BASICALLY just me brainstorming at this point, but re: the gerlion fic ideas i have..... some possible themes, things to expand upon, issues that the characters have that i think i might look at... also just issues that i think would come up in their relationship/that HAVE come up in their relationship that they dont delve into in canon:
geralt struggling with intimacy is like the biggest theme in what i think about when i want to write abt gerlion lmaooo. i think dandelion at some point just flat out asks him why he doesnt think he deserves love ... haha.......... ouch
similarly, geralt struggling to understand what to do with a friend and what friendship is and what role dandelion plays in his life now that he’s met him... because he’s never really had a friend before...
geralt and dandelion learning to empathize with each other’s backgrounds and realize the grass is not always greener on the other side (geralt might envy dandelion for being beloved, but he realizes how uncomfortable that attention can be, dandelion might envy geralt for being his epic journeys alone, but realizes how lonely such a life can be), thus they learn from each other, admire the other a little more and understand their needs (they both need someone to speak to), and are more satisfied with themselves and their own lives
we really learn very little about dandelion’s life in canon, so i want to explore his profession and found family in other musicians, and the backstory of things he did before he met geralt / when he and geralt were separate and geralt was elsewhere, i.e. what the hell did dandelion get up to in the four years that geralt was chilling in vengerberg. thats four years and dandelion gets into a LOT of trouble.......... relating to the themes of independence and family i think because at some point id like to have geralt and dandelion compare their backstories. id like for a lot of this foolery to come back to bite dandelion in the ass...
also at some point we gotta face why dandelion doesnt hold a relationship with any woman for more than 0.2 seconds but literally has known and been with geralt for SO long that it his canonical age can’t possibly make sense
i would like for geralt to eventually say something in his own words or thoughts about the topic that yennefer brought up in BOE (”you were with him, thanks to you, he wasn’t alone.”) and also dandelion expressing guilt for having to be rescued... mamma mia these are some big relationship issues that need to be addresses
towards the end of the saga i think it would be important for them to address how their roles have changed in each other’s lives and idk you know couples redo their marriage vows sometimes? geralt and dandelion just need to like go to gulet again i think after LOTL (because its not like anyone died or anything in LOTL)

Me - no fear -thinks about twn doing the hansa -One Fear
mood because they’ll probably treat regis like in b&w where he’s just distant and Immortally Haughty..... they’ll take out milva’s vulnerability and just make her an Action Girl... angouleme probably wont even be in it because if sword of destiny gets cut thats grounds to cut anything
tbh the entire hansa might even get cut but idk how they’d fill the timespace.

Note
That technique Geralt is using to fight (holding the sword above the hilt) is a valid fighting technique called half-swording. Typically the blades are sharpened ALL the way down - leaving a space that is more dull. It allows more swing control in confined spaces and a more forceful thrust. Some examples of halfswording are grabbing the blade with two hands and just using the sword as a club lol, or holding above the hilt. With skillz one could totally grab the whole blade without getting cut :)
valid considering i know nothing about swordfighting. like yennefer, i was just worried for geralt’s skilled fingers

“i am gonna need to rewatch this scene in the tavern 10 times over...”
I for one, am ok with them making Geralt and dandelion have more scenes in which they bond/learn about each other, instead of him just being there for comic relief pls god I’m begging
god im begging too. i think dandelion takes on this role moreso in the later short stories and in the saga where he serves to counter and question geralt, and if they begin this dynamic sooner i’m all for it. it’s satisfying to see geralt get the truth told to his face. i see dandelion as always presenting the question, “well, what if [x]?” “but [y] is also possible.”
it’s refreshing because geralt is, ahem, as cavill said, “basically universally hated,” and he’s just internalized all of this hate to hate himself, even if he won’t admit it... so we need someone who loves himself too much to help geralt work through it lol...
from the scene in the character profile video for geralt where dandelion says like “white hair... two very scary swords,” i think @ johix was right that it’s intended to be gulet, or at least their place of first meeting (if the netflix series cuts details out/changes how they met).
these are my predictions for their conversation (and i guess also how i headcanon it, but based off of what we saw in the preview):
dandelion gives a bubbly greeting, remember at this point contextually he’s also trying to secure protection in the form of a bodyguard so he’s very suck up-y.
geralt is not very amused... he’s not mad or bothered, but just put off and a little offended because he assumes dandelion (like every other living being on the continent and destiny itself) is mocking him. geralt’s stupid sensitive like this. so he tries to shut him up by being intimidating, so he asks him some wonderfully conversational question like “what do you see when you look at me” sort of trying to coax him into answering ‘uhh tall scary pale mutant?’
this is where we get the observation, “white hair... two very, scary swords” which i imagine geralt responds to with something to the effect of “exactly. so why are you still talking to me?”
i think the dandelion thing to do here would be to blather senselessly in words of praise (remember they are unfamiliar with each other at this point) and this is when geralt gets up from his seat, takes his coin, and leaves the table, leaving dandelion behind faltering and hesitating.
i think at this point dandelion might just get fed up and take geralt to task a little bit for being rude as hell and this spurs another argument-conversation, at the end of which geralt is proven wrong or cannot answer due to dandelion winning in a battle of wits and hypotheticals. (maybe scolding geralt about how he is being a self-fulfilling prophecy by being so prickly, that of course people are going to fear him if he doesn’t let them in? literally making this part up so idk)
geralt is more neutral now that dandelion’s proven himself to not be an idiot (hm... debatable) or someone with ill intentions, so geralt just accepts his company for a while.
unfortunately i highly doubt any kind of hand-holding or carrying or intimate conversations that we got from zebrowski and zamachowski in 2002 😔 i dont necessarily think the netflix series will no homo them as it were but i think they just are gonna hammer home that geralt can be an icy son of a bitch and dandelion lives with his head in the clouds and sees the good and the poetic in everything.
what i would LIKE to see but idk if we are going to get is a more complex idea of their characters... geralt is patient, thoughtful, careful. he has a wonderful capacity for dealing with the vulnerable. dandelion is by no means perfect... man is, as geralt put it, a cynic, a lecher, a womanizer, and a liar.
my biggest concern is them just trivializing dandelion as Annoying Friend because he has the potential to be quite so... he’s supposed to get on geralt’s nerves, but if the audience doesn’t understand that geralt feels such kindness towards him and also that geralt is usually in the wrong, there’s a high chance that dandelion will just come off plain wrong as a character lol
