no offense but male protagonists whose strength comes from empathy, compassion and humanity will always be more interesting than snarky assholes who punch everything and treat everyone around them like shit

im fucking trembling in anger right now
Ma'Khia Bryant, a 15 year old Black girl, was fucking murdered by a cop in Columbus, Ohio, after calling the police for help because she was being jumped by another group of teenage girls, she had a knife on her that she had for self-defense and the fucker rolled up and shot her 4 times, apparently without telling her to drop the knife according to bystanders, and this happened roughly 20 minutes before Chauvin's verdict in court for the murder of George Floyd

It becomes hard to write about this in a newspaper because it is no longer new. The news of these killings is not that they are interruptions of the norm, but a manifestation of the norm.
There is no new angle. There is no new hot take. There is very little new to be revealed. These killings are not continuing to happen due to a lack of exposure, but in spite of it. Our systems of law enforcement, criminal justice and communal consciousness have adjusted themselves to a banal barbarism.
This has produced in me and many others an inextinguishable rage, a calcification of contempt. As for me, I no longer even attempt to manage or direct my rage. I simply sit with it, face it like an adversary staring across a campfire, waiting to see how I am moved to act, but not proscribing that action and definitely not allowing society’s idea of decorum to proscribe it.
A society that treats this much Black death at the hands of the state as collateral damage in a just war on crime has no decorum to project. That society is savage.
I am also no longer interested in talking about Black pain and Black trauma. (I am becoming ever more convinced that there is a prurient interest in gawking at Black suffering rather than a genuine desire to remedy it.) I now focus on my rage.
I’m sure that pain and trauma are present in me, but I’m choosing to subjugate their import. Rage has ascended to my position of primacy. America scoffed and was unmoved when, for years, we spoke out of our pain. So be it. Now, rage is the only language I have left.

hi, love your blog!!! i've been wondering something and you're an expert in witcher lore so i'm sure you know the answer.... does dandelion ever get to hang out with ciri when she's younger? is it ever mentioned in the books?
hi, thank you!!
the only time dandelion and ciri meet and spend time together in the books is about for a night or so in time of contempt, and also towards the end in lady of the lake.
but first as a short preface: dandelion canonically in relation to geralt and geralt, yennefer, ciri as a family doesn’t so much exist as another member of that family, but rather as an observer and narrator. this is probably best shown by the scene in time of contempt with him and ciri. sapkowski uses his character as kind of a device to see what’s going on with their family. this of course doesn’t mean that he’s not welcome or something, but rather that his more is rather of geralt’s friend and so his role to ciri is more like “cool friend of my dad’s” rather than ever being like a father or mentor or something like that to her. he summarizes it in this prelude to chapter 2 in time of contempt:
Tumblr media
time of contempt scene is when he and geralt, who have been travelling together, finally meet up with yennefer and ciri, who have been travelling together. after some drama (ciri runs away because she wants to go see geralt before she enrolls at aretuza, but gets caught on her horse by the wild hunt and other apocalyptic visions). she’s about 13? 14? at this time, by the way.
after she’s recovered, she walks towards geralt and yennefer but cannot decide which one to run towards, so she faints instead. after some time, she’s recovered. it’s then when she gets out of bed to spy on geralt and yennefer, who are having an argument because they’ve been apart for a long time and also now have a child to take care of who is being hunted down and it’s a little much riding on them. dandelion catches her spying and this is amusing to him, so he playfully mocks her a little and then provides some good advice and care. it’s somewhat of a good but also strange scene for dandelion in my opinion because he takes a more mature and distant stance in this scene with ciri, he’s treating her appropriately and not being childish to her, but it’s just uncommon for dandelion to be serious and distant unless things are serious.
the scene is short enough to post here, in fact:

then in lady of the lake, after stygga and nilfgaard have been dealt with, we get a comical (yet still keeping with the tone of the book, as you can see from geralt’s dismal reaction) scene where dandelion’s about to face execution for cheating on the duchess. geralt and ciri have been travelling together and planned to meet dandelion in the palace stables in beauclair, but come across the execution which is congesting traffic. they’re both very glad when they get him back!

“You’re hopelessly stupid,” stated Geralt, and Ciri confirmed she thought the same with an energetic nod of her head.
ciri eventually does leave them though, because she must ride to yennefer. she plans to ride across the continent in three days, which sparks this exchange, because dandelion points out that it’s logically impossible to do so:

ending on a tragic note, as lady of the lake does :( <3
if you are looking specifically at dandelion and ciri, in my opinion dandelion and ciri have a very sweet friendship but it’s not ever explored because they’re simply just not that close, i feel like had the series ended happily, since geralt and dandelion travel together ciri would have travelled equally in parts with them and yennefer, getting to know dandelion more through travels.
but on the other hand, if you are looking for dandelion being a mentor to someone, i’d suggest thinking about dandelion and essi daven’s friendship/siblingship/mentorship, which we learn of in a little sacrifice. because this is not something that we ever really get with dandelion and ciri since he’s not a kind of role model or anything to her

They say that witchers don’t feel anything… but I’ve felt something for a few people, and they are all dead. Why? People are monsters. Why am I supposed to defend them? Foul race. It’s not always like this, Geralt. There are good and bad people. You usually meet the evil ones on your path. It’s the path of fighting… violence and aggression. You were forced to walk it. But there is more… love , friendship, poetry. They are like pearls, diamonds, they are rare and thus so valuable. If someone is close to you, then it’s worth it to live. What more can I say? I’m not worth much, but friendship doesn’t have any price. It’s disinterested.

day 83 of finding out that geralt and dandelion canonically kissed
it wouldn’t even be gay but it was made gay by the fact that david french chose to censor it to keep the truth from the anglophone audience

Let’s talk about Toss A Coin
Let’s talk about Toss A Coin for a bit. I can’t deny that I too had this song stuck in head for weeks after finishing the Netflix show. That is to say, it was only the refrain. When I listened to the song in full and actually paid attention to the lyrics, I was admittedly a little bit underwhelmed, if not disappointed. Now, before I continue, I’d like to say that I am in no way a scholar of music or musical composition, ect, ect. This is merely my on personal opinion on the song, a listing of things that sort of bothered me about it. Toss A Coin is not a bad song. I personally just don’t find it particular good either.
