Spoiler-free Nocturne ramblings
(Guess everyone's all worked up about Castlevania again because "Under the Milky Way" gained like 28 kudos and 1000 hits in 5 days, yay : D )
Just finished watching Nocturne. I have thoughts, but in the interest of keeping things SPOILER-FREE (because yes I got spoiled on things because people can't bother using a spoiler tag, thanks a lot you wankers), I'll keep this as vague as possible.
Olrox: far and away the best character thus far. I can see why everyone's hot and heavy for the guy already, and the smut fics are apparently already rolling in. I would not be mad if they simply shifted this to Castlevania: Olrox and sent everyone else home. More, please! How about some merch too? I'd buy the shit out of it, dude is straight up hot.
This is not my Richter. I expected this:
... and got this:
(Yes that's Joseph Joestar, not Richter. The point is, sexy brunet hot-headed asshole vs. plain white bread. Richter needs more asshole points, less nutritional void.)
Since Richter is 19, that'd make Maria 12, going by the Rondo of Blood timeline (apparently she's 16 in Nocturne but she doesn't look it). For those who get why I brought that up, marinate on that, y'all. A very long marinade, maybe another 5, 6 years...
I... actually don't mind Annette. I didn't know how I'd react to her, but I have no complaints.
I rather like Edouard.
I noticed Mizrak right off the bat. Thought to myself, now there's a cutie. I'm not the only one who noticed ^_~
Um, trying to figure out how to word this without doing a reveal ^^;... Thanks for throwing us a bone, sorta, on what's probably the most well-known Castlevania threeway relationship prior to the animations? Is that vague enough?
Uh.... honestly don't have much opinion on anyone else. I predicted a much higher body count by this point and people I thought would be dead aren't, and vice versa, but I'm sure the numbers will start climbing next season.
Things I wish would've happened:
A little closer compliance to game lore, as Richter has a good amount of game lore to reference. If they skip the entirety of the SotN storyline I think that'd be a mistake since it's obviously the best-known game of the franchise.
I'm not necessarily mad at the throwing away of the Vampire Killer's special clause (that only direct line male descendants can use it) as it's patriarchal and outdated but I would've liked to seen mention of that not being the case, first, before it got flung out the window.
A LOT less crying. I know Alucard was a faucet in the original animation, but the crying jags in this are ridiculous. I'm pretty sure even the horses were crying. Tera running off sobbing like an anime girl, complete with hands over her face? Ugh. Everyone just standing around and watching Annette cry her heart out, without even a hand on the shoulder in sympathy? Uggggh. No those aren't spoilers, as everyone cries at least twice, if not more.
Original animation vs Nocturne, and the lack of camaraderie and banter:
I guess what I miss most in this series so far vs the original animation series, is the lack of teamwork and camaraderie. Trevor, Sypha and Alucard were yes, forced by circumstance, to stick together, rely on one another, and build up a rapport (they spent the majority of S2 locked in the Hold together), to the point that they could work as a team without having to verbally communicate. There was something really refreshing about that, ya know?
The protagonists of Nocturne thus far... mostly do whatever they want? There's so little interpersonal dialogue. The only character relationship thus far that feels organic at all is the one that started as straight up sex - there's an honesty to that, at least.
Also I miss the banter, a lot more than I thought I would. Even with a serious storyline I like a bit of humor in my shows / stories. How else would we have learned that Sypha has icy cold feet, Trevor can't fucking read, or Alucard is triggered by the word "the"? I came away with zero new trivia factoids about Richter, Maria, and Annette.

TAGGED BY: you know ;) TAGGING: only gay ppl can see this
GETTING TO KNOW THE MUN.
NAME: chibi NICKNAME: reddo, cheeb, richter belmont titfuck ( thanks gc ) FACECLAIM: usually lucina but i tend to just use whoever’s blog i’m on. just picture me as a pikachu or kirby and ur basically good to go PRONOUNS: they / them, him / he ( tentatively ). please do not call me she / her. HEIGHT: like 5′1″ or 5′2″ i cant remember i’m tiny BIRTHDAY: march 27th AESTHETIC: spooky & goth stuff ( vampires, witches, etc ). black, white, pink & blue. and pikachu. LAST SONG YOU LISTENED TO: nocturne - symphony of the night ost FAVORITE MUSE (S) YOU’VE WRITTEN: richter right here for one, but lucina ( @eyebrand ), zero ( @latrocinari ) jacob frye ( @rooksassassin ), monika ( @dotchr ) are ones that really stick out too! i’m still working on miriam ( @shardbind ) but i love her in general so she’ll be a favorite in no time /o/
GETTING TO KNOW THE ACCOUNT.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO TAKE ON THIS MUSE: i was just getting into castlevania because i love spooky things like monsters and vampires and complicated themes of religion because it’s #relatable to me as a gay trans person, so i was bingeing through the show and was going to get to the games next. then simon & richter were announced for smash and i thought richter was cute so i binged through rondo and sotn and oops i saw the potential there for his character so i decided to pick his muse up!! i tend to go for sad muses that slowly heal as time goes on i guess. a lot of richter is mostly speculation / hc’d based bc castlevania is not heavy on character lore at all ( at least before lords of shadow anyway ) so a lot of his character comes from what’s seen in canon & expanded on / thought on, which is a good writing exercise on its own!!
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE ASPECTS OF YOUR CURRENT MUSE: i think there’s something interesting - and unsettling - about the belmont and dracula dynamic, in which that belmonts are pretty much cycled through every century and just basically forgotten about, and it’s really only brought up in sotn with richter. granted, richter was brainwashed at the time so you can argue that who knows what’s actually richter’s feelings, but i like to think that deep down inside there is that fear of being forgotten about inside of him. richter had completed his entire life journey at 19 years old, and that’s barely out of adolescence years.
combined with losing his fiance ( with dxc anyway but i feel like annette had left richter in the continuities where she lives because she became disenchanted with the vampire hunter lifestyle ), i imagine richter’s mental health really wasn’t so great after that. of course, richter wants to appear strong to people and he probably through that they would think of him as weak and unlike his great, legendary ancestors - even if there is a rational part of him saying that they’re human too, he feels like he needs to be like them as a hero and warrior. and those thoughts and such were used against him. all because all of that was drilled in his head, in some form of another. maybe not by his family directly, but the impact they left and the cycle they’re in.
tl;dr leon belmont wanted to fight the night but all he got were grandkids with anxiety
WHAT’S YOUR BIGGEST INSPIRATION WHEN IT COMES TO WRITING: having plots & threads that go along with richter’s character really well usually makes me write faster!! music sometimes helps too, though i can’t listen to music while i write bc i’ll overstim myself that way.
FAVORITE TYPES OF THREADS: deep, meaningful threads. humor’s good too and crack threads are pretty funny too when i’m feeling them. i’m also a sucker for romance HAHAHA
BIGGEST STRUGGLE IN REGARDS TO YOUR CURRENT MUSE: mostly keeping up with threads and finding longterm partners, especially in a mfrp like isola. castlevania is still kind of a niche thing so finding partners who are even interested in threading with a mostly obscure character can be kind of a downer at times as well ( i always feel like i’m screaming into the void about castlevania stuff LMAO ), so that’s really the only struggle i can think of, aside from rping a character that’s largely hc based! it’s rough out here for the non-netflixvania bitches like me :pensive:
speaking of that as well, i’m also cautiously awaiting for the rondo / sotn adaption that throws out all of my headcanons or whatever character that richter had in the games and i’ll have to put on my app that i’m not accepting canon doubles. considering the nightmare that was the fefates localization w/ zero’s character, i am just awaiting another instance like that in some form or another.

wait wait. your tags on that "it's adrian" post -- where are you getting that he doesn't identify with his given name? that's what he calls himself.
I assume you mean that’s what he calls himself in the Netflix series. That is a major disconnect between the Netflix series and the original lore. In the Netflix adaptation, Alucard introduces himself as Adrian, and says that “Alucard” is a nickname other people came up with for him. While obviously we have yet to see whether he'll adopt that name in the future, it does seem that he thinks of himself as "Adrian," at least at this point in time. So there's nothing actually wrong with Netflix fans referring to him as Adrian! But it's definitely unusual to see after years of being in the games fandom.
See, in the game (and tie-in media) canon, Adrian decides to rename himself "Alucard" to spite his father’s ideals. Which is hilarious and petty, but that doesn't change the fact that he continues to identify with that name for centuries. When a human calls him "Adrian," Alucard explicitly tells him not to use that name - he's Alucard. He introduces himself to everyone he meets as Alucard (or as "Arikado," when he's in Japan and trying to hide his identity). Unless I’ve missed an instance of it, the only time Adrian's full name is ever spoken out loud at all is by an incubus who hates Alucard's guts. And that incubus is telling Alucard's original name to one of Alucard's allies who he wants to distrust Alucard, presumably as a way to insinuate that Alucard is untrustworthy. After all, Alucard didn't even tell her his real name, so why should she believe anything he says?
When he returns home in SoTN, everyone in the castle calls him Alucard, from the family's old librarian to Death himself. I peeked at the JP version of SotN, and it looks like even his dad respects his name choice. (アルカード = Alucard. Dracula doesn’t call him Alucard in the Eng version, but he also doesn’t call him Adrian. He just calls him “my son.”)
Is it a silly name chosen for silly reasons? Yes.
Is it also the name Alucard calls himself and wants to be called by others? Yes.
It obviously doesn't actually matter, because we're talking about a fictional Gary Stu dhampir who literally can't be bothered by people calling him the wrong name, but. That is where I'm getting "he doesn't identify with his given name" from.
