i will admit i havent finished the movie but i did read the book and it is an absolute FAVORITE. so my answer is strictly the characters in the book bc i feel like theyre portrayed extremely different in the movie

id definitely say charlie just because i can relate to him, hes a really good portrayal of growing up and trauma.. seeing his thought process in the book and how he handled people leaving and his mental health really stuck with me.. i like that he has flaws and hes fucked up rlly bad a few times, he doesnt immediately admit or realize it but eventually he does, and its good to see a character who isnt perfect yk

i also love patrick, i read the book a month or two ago now so i dont have a lot to go off of at the moment (my other hyper fixations push everything aside 😭) but i know i really love him PLUS HE PLAYS FRANKIE IN RHPS 🤭🫶🫶

do you have an opinion on The Host movie? (asking bc ik you've read the book and I just watched the movie again)

you know those jokes about how if you ask someone with adhd or autism about a subject they're fixated on you gotta be prepared for a wall of text

yeah that's me right now though idk if i'm gonna type a whole wall of text I just have the kill bill sirens going off in my head rn because oh BOY I have opinions on The Host movie.

I'm gonna put it under a read more but just be warned my opinion is not a positive one

okay full disclosure I have not seen the movie in roughly 7 years or so because after I saw it once or twice I refused to watch it ever again

anyway I fucking hated the movie

I think the biggest issue I had with the movie was the way they framed it as being more about Melanie than Wanda. the entire POINT of the book was Wanda's journey into finding herself and her home with humanity. Wanda was the main character of the book and this was essential to the theme of the entire thing. but the movie made it about Melanie. and the thing is, in the book, Melanie is not a good person. and this is okay! she's a flawed human and that's why it's so impactful that Wanda comes to love her so much. because Melanie is impulsive, bratty, jealous, and has next to no self-control. this is not me criticizing her character. I love Melanie as a character. she's so intrinsically human and that's why she makes such a great juxtaposition to Wanda. but the movie didn't seem to get this. it was so focused on Melanie's side and not Wanda when Wanda is the driving force and the most important character in the story.

also I didn't appreciate the unnecessary added drama. like the Seeker was almost comically evil in the movie to a point where she didn't even feel like a soul. I know in the book she was described as being very different from most souls anyway but there were still traits of souls recognizable to her, whereas the Seeker in the movie felt very different. again it's been 7 or so years so I could be misremembering, so sorry if I am, but yeah. that felt weird too.

also iirc the movie didn't talk about any of Wanda's previous lives at all? or any of the other planets the souls took over?? which was a huge chunk of interesting worldbuilding lost. also the souls in general were just framed as being wholly bad and evil when in the book it really emphasizes that they DO care. they genuinely think they're helping other species by taking them over and keeping them from self-destructing. is it murder? yes, but not to the souls. the souls don't do this out of malice because they're incapable of even feeling malicious towards others. and the movie really just missed that.

I would say Jared felt like a flat piece of bread in the movie because he did but also he literally felt like that in the book too so. guess they got that right. Ian though... they flattened my boy he was so much more interesting in the book gahhhh so much lost potential there.

I said I wasn't sure if I was gonna write a wall of text and here I am. I could probably say more but I'm gonna cut myself off there. I think part of the issue is that the book is really big and a lot of it is the slow shift in dynamics Wanda has with everyone and it hinges so much on her internal thought process which is difficult to get across on screen. But also it just sucked. even if I hadn't read the book it was still a bad movie overall imo. I'm just gonna keep rereading the book every few years and pretend the movie never happened.

hookfang as a razorwhip called dreadbeast, i did initially consider giving him that dragon that wears metal and tools as armour but changed my mind bc i think razorwhips are a bit cooler and tucker with a razorwhip-spike sword is a cool concept yk

fishlegs as simmons, come on!! it’s a perfect match!! nerdy little men who are the smartest idiot in a group of idiots, they both feel under appreciated in their leadership roles and get bullied by snotlout and tucker respectively for not being able to pick up women. i think the friendship between fishlegs and hiccup could be reflected nicely onto simmons and church but that’s probably just bc i’m dying for content of them together. i’m plucking that one bit of book lore that says fishlegs is of berserker descent (but was raised on berk by adoptive hooligan parents) bc i think the connection to the skrill is cool, it explains his very red hair and also taps into knife!simmons energy. it also becomes a relevant plot point in the au!

ok i’m so mad a massive block of text was just deleted abt simmons and his dragon and i cba rewriting so this is the abridged version. meatlug as a skrill called stormwrought, simmons stumbles across a singetail, singetail tries to eat him, random skrill on the hunt for a meal spots the singetail and tries to eat it- effectively saving simmons from the singetail. simmons loses an eye, arm and leg but survives and becomes a hermit studying dragons all day. by chance, he comes across the same skrill that saved him and studies it for a while until the skrill faces off against a much bigger singetail that nearly kills it, simmons is like oh shit and helps the skrill kill the singetail for good, gaining the skrill’s respect and it allows simmons to become its rider. (revelant info: simmons being a berserker knows their methods on how to reel skrills in by using metal and since half his body is partially metal the skrill takes a liking to him)

heather as grif, i initially jusg made grif heather bc of the fishlegs/heather relationship thing but then i was like wait this kinda works bc kai can be dagur since she’s literally batshit insane. oh and also heather is canonically the best chef out of the dragon riders and i feel like that’s reflective of grif’s entire personality x

windshear as a rumblehorn called slobgobbler, i absolutely love this pair, rumblehorns are the best trackers out of all the dragon species, and yes that’s probably so that they can follow objects or people or whatever but the prospect of grif making his dragon sniff out delicious food for them is something that tickles me. plus it’s very fitting of grif’s character since the madman managed to sniff out genkin’s pizza

dagur as kai, so this is another fun one, i think kai being a villain is a very under-utilised concept bc who doesn’t love sexy female villains?? so in this au, grif n kai’s mother takes the place of heather and dagur’s father (oswald the agreeable), however, instead of travelling alone prior to the shipwreck on vanaheim, she’s with kai, and an accidental fire is what causes the boat to capsize. kai manages to escape however, and returns back to their tribe (in this au they aren’t berserkers bc i wanted simmons to be a berserker, they’re just some unnamed tribe idk . ) grif doesn’t handle his grief well and leaves the tribe, blaming kai for their mother’s supposed death. kai also doesn’t handle her grief well but she channels it through her new position as the tribe’s chief. after that her story basically follows dagur’s in the sense that she eventually has her redemption

i’ve decided that shattermaster can stay as shattermaster and sleuther is still sleuther except i’ve changed his name to ravenous. i didnt see the point in changing that, instead of fishlegs/simmons training her to ride a gronckle caboose can do it instead. like in rtte canon, she has shattermaster first while learning to ride dragons and then bonds with ravenous after shattermaster dies

viggo as locus, redemption arc redemption arc redemp . ok but in all seriousness both viggo and locus treat their respective wars as just a job instead of getting emotionally invested in it like johann and felix. viggo has his weird little obsession with hiccup, locus has his weird little obsession with wash . ultimately they both realise that their actions were wrong and try to make things better

Also slightly changed, hope it doesn’t affect the story too much - though this is platonic as hell 😅 I can write a part 2 (or more) which will probably be more romantic and focused on Fei and Shal if you want, so just tell me 😄

Picture-perfect - Feitan x Reader x Shalnark

   “Fei, is that a new Trevor Brown book?” Shalnark asked as he eyed his friend, who spared him a glance.

   “No.” Shalnark plopped down, having noticed that the cover was different – no writing whatsoever: no title, author’s name or anything else. There wasn’t anything that special about it at first glance – it looked like any other book. But there was just something about it.

   “Is it one of boss’ books?”

   “No. Mine.” Shalnark pouted, looking more attentively at the book. What sort of book could be so interesting? He could feel Aura clinging onto the book – faint, but still there.

   “Did you feel the Aura?” Feitan glanced at him, nodding. That’s why he was looking through the book – maybe there was some sort of a hint as to what made it so special. Had the author created it with so much love, care and intensity that some of their Aura was left as part of it? So far, there was nothing. No writing on the sides, notes or anything left between the pages.

   “Did you try using Nen on it? Maybe it’ll do something.” Feitan did just that, but still, nothing happened. He didn’t even know in what language the book was; though he could still read the words, but without understanding them. He’d snatched it up just because it seemed interesting and thought that maybe Chrollo would like it, but now it proved to be a mystery that he couldn’t let go of until he made sense of it.

   “I’ll take it to boss.” It wasn’t too hard to find him as he and Shalnark saw him seated on top of the chipped and cracked altar, reading, while the coloured light coming through the remaining stained glass provided some extra light besides the lit candles next to him. Hearing their footsteps, he looked up before his eyes zeroed in on the book in Feitan’s hand as he bookmarked his own book and paid attention to them.

   “Yes?”

   “I found a book. It’s in another language.”

   “And there’s Aura coming from it. It didn’t open when Feitan used Nen.” Feitan gave Chrollo the book, who studied it curiously, looking through the pages himself. Sure enough, the language made no sense, though it could still be read, but not understood, and there was nothing else to indicate the subject of the book, such as illustrations.

   “Have you tried reading aloud from it?” They both shook their heads. Trying to get at least an idea of how to read at least the first sentence, Chrollo’s voice soon broke the silence. Nothing happened. He furrowed his eyebrows before looking over the next few sentences. “Let me try something.” Feitan and Shalnark both nodded as they awaited whatever Chrollo had thought of doing, hoping something might happen.

   Reading from the beginning, Chrollo slowly used his Nen at the same time as the words he’d spoken, foreign on his tongue and in his eyes, started changing until they made sense. He stopped when the first few sentences seemed to remain translated, curious about the book even more.

   “What I just read got translated while the rest are still foreign.” He turned the open book towards the two men, but their eyebrows furrowed before they looked at Chrollo.

   “It hasn’t changed for us, it looks the same.” Shalnark pouted. Chrollo’s eyes widened a little before nodding, intrigued.

   “Can I have it back? I want to try.” Feitan said and despite Chrollo wanting to read more, he gave it back. Maybe he’d think a bit more about the book and its strange ability before going back to it. Until then, he’d get back to his own book.

   As Feitan and Shalnark returned to the previous room they had been staying in, they sat down, looking at the book with interest. Both of them started reading – Feitan in a lower voice – looking at the words they tried pronouncing and the way they changed right before their eyes. They both read the first chapter before stopping and reading what had gotten translated, still out loud and using Nen. The air and atmosphere seemed to shift, as if there was static around them. Shalnark looked around. Nothing seemed to be out of place or changing, except for the weather outside. A storm seemed to be approaching. He watched the sky every few seconds as they both continued reading.

   “Fei, the weather’s changing.” He saw the smaller Spider nod, eyes quickly glancing at the sky before going back to the book. As soon as they both finished reading the translated chapter, there was a loud noise from above.

   At first, they thought it was the sound of thunder, but with the bits of the crumbling ceiling falling in front of them, they both realised that something had hit the old church, right above them. Feitan shut the book and the two men got up, quickly leaving the room. Chrollo himself had gotten up, as did a few other Spiders, all of the present ones looking upwards, as if waiting for something else to happen.

   “What was that?” Shizuku asked.

   “Thunder? Maybe lightning struck?” Pakunoda suggested, though even she doubted that had happened. Ready for an attack, they all went upstairs, where some of the private rooms were situated. Going directly to the one above where Feitan and Shalnark were, the Phantom Troupe were shocked to see a wide hole in the roof. Rain was pouring in and right underneath was a person, who had seemingly appeared out of nowhere. Wide, frightened eyes looked from one Spider to another, while you tried getting away from them, seeing as they were ready to attack at any moment.

   “They’re from the book.” Feitan said. He was amazed by the fact that you almost looked the way he had imagined you to. Everyone looked at him bewildered.

   “They’re one of the characters from Feitan’s book.” Shalnark added, as if it made any more sense than what Feitan had just said. They all looked at the newcomer again. You didn’t seem like a threat and they could sense no Aura or Nen coming from you.

   “Let’s all calm down, okay? They seem scared.” Pakunoda suggested as she let her conjured gun disappear. The others slowly followed her example, still on guard.

   “Who are you? Where am I?” Your voice wavered, scared out of your mind. One moment, you were in your garden, and now, you were in some dark, decrepit room, with the only exit blocked by a bunch of strangers who seemed ready to kill in the blink of an eye.

   “Easy there. We’re not going to hurt you.” Shalnark said as he smiled, hands raised in surrender. “What’s your name?” He already knew, but he wanted the others to know as well.

   “(Y/N).” You answered, still wary. A shiver ran through you, though you were unsure if it was out of fear or because of the rain that had poured over you before you moved into the corner of the room.

   “(Y/N), how about you come downstairs with us then? It’s cold here and it’s raining, we wouldn’t want you to get sick. We can also get some food for you if you’re hungry.” Chrollo asked, intrigued and interested in what would happen next. They were all curious, but not all of them were too keen on being so friendly with a stranger. Who knew what you were capable of?

   “We won’t hurt you.” Pakunoda added. You eyed each one of them for a few seconds, weighing your options.

   There really wasn’t much you could do: you were in a foreign place, surrounded by strangers and had no way to defend yourself. You slowly left the corner of the room, sidestepping the puddle and debris on the floor before standing in front of them. Chrollo took off his coat, putting it over your shoulders and you hugged it tightly over your body, thanking him before they led the way downstairs. You looked around, noticing the abandoned and decaying state of the building you found yourself in and wondering what they could be doing there.

   As soon as you reached the nave, you were guided to one of the remaining pews, sitting down while the others sat around you, not too close, not too far. You felt like an exhibit – being looked at from all sides with curiosity. After finding out all of their names, you were asked about where you had come from, what did you feel when you were spirited away, if you had any powers. The questioning continued and while you answered them all to the best of your abilities, it was clear that you were bewildered and shocked about what had happened to you. But you had questions of your own.

   “How did I get here?” Feitan wordlessly gave you the book, which you opened. You immediately felt your eyes widen in shock. The words perfectly described you, doing exactly what you had been doing before you woke up in this strange world.

   “Do you understand the language?” Chrollo asked you. You only nodded, flipping the pages. It was like reading about your future, your life. Whatever you said or did, written black on white. It was both interesting and terrifying.

   “We brought you here.” You looked at Shalnark, eyes wide. You felt a mix of emotions, though the main fight was between anger and despair.

   “Why would you do that?” You almost felt like sobbing. How were you supposed to get back? What if only they could get you back? But what would you do with the knowledge of having found out about your future actions and words? What if that changed the course of the book? Of your life? What if you could never return in the first place?

   “It was by accident!” He said, flustered and feeling somewhat sorry. He could understand that being thrown into an unknown world just like that was more than upsetting. You continued looking down at the book, thoughts and heart racing.

   “No more crying. Move on.” You looked up and towards the voice, spotting the smaller man who looked at you with a blank face, well you thought at least, since it was half covered.

   “What?” Maybe you’d heard him wrong.

   “Move on. Make the best of your situation.” You knew he was right. But you were still in a state of shock over everything that had happened to you.

   “Feitan is right. Right now, you should eat something and rest. We’ll talk more afterwards.” Chrollo said. Pakunoda nodded and you lied down, soon hearing those present scatter around. All except for a few.

   “Me and Feitan will keep watch.” Shalnark proposed and Chrollo nodded.

   “Then I’d like to examine the book a little more.” The book was soon in his hands and he was once again back on the altar, muttering quietly to himself as he read the foreign part before reading what was translated, careful not to summon something else.

   The tiredness that came with the shock of suddenly finding yourself in another world made you fall asleep quickly. You hoped that when you’d wake up, you’d be back in your world and this would all just be a crazy dream.

   “What do you think?” Shalnark asked quietly. He fiddled with his phone, taking a photo of you. You were cute when you were sleeping, though he still felt a little guilty.

   “Hm, weird. I wonder who the author was.” Feitan answered and Shalnark nodded. Was it part of the author’s Nen? Would you be able to return? Or would you be trapped here? Whatever it was, the two felt responsible for you, in one way or another. Maybe you’d be valuable. Maybe they’d discovered something big. Maybe even more important than the Dark Continent. But they were also interested in knowing more about you and your world. Maybe when you’d wake up, you’d be willing to answer more of their questions.

I met KJ when we were working on a movie together. We fell for each other instantly, something just drew me to him. After the movie we went on a few dates and then made it official. A year after us dating something happened. KJ got attacked by a vampire and well they made him one. He hated it at first and tried to hide it from me, but I found out when I walked in on him downing a squirrel’s blood. I was shocked at first, but I loved him and I was gonna help him. Since then we’ve been working on how to deal with his thirst. He wouldn’t drink from me though, he made that very clear. His cast mates on Riverdale knew what happened and they didn’t look at him any different.  

Today KJ took me to the Riverdale set with him since I wasn’t working at the moment. My agent hasn’t found anything new for me to do yet and I didn’t mind since it meant I got to spend more time with KJ. He was working really hard and I saw he was getting hungry. I looked in my bag to grab the blood I brought for him, but it wasn't there. My eyes widened when I realized I left it in our fridge. There was no way I could get some animal blood now! I bit my lip and hit my head, how could I be so stupid! 

“Alright break time people!” Someone called and everyone started walking off. KJ walked over to me with a smile and gave me a kiss. 

“Let’s go back to my trailer ay?” He asked and I nodded. I made sure to keep the worry off my face, I didn’t want him to make a scene about my idea around everyone. We got to his trailer and he sat down.

“Babe, can I have some blood?” He asked and I bit my lip. 

“About that…” I started and he raised his brow.

“What?” He asked. 

“Um… I forgot it when we were rushing to leave…” I said and his eyes widened. 

“Ummm, okay, I can wait.” He said and I shook my head. 

“No you can't!” I said and he shook his head. 

“Yes I can Y/N.” He said. 

“No, you’re hungry, just drink some from me.” I said moving the hair from my neck. 

“No! Are you crazy? What if I kill you?” He said and I rolled my eyes. 

“KJ, you won’t, I trust you. Now drink you’re hungry.” I said moving closer to him. 

“No! I can wait till we get home.” He said and I narrowed my eyes at him. 

“KJ, I will not let you out of this trailer until you drink.” I said sitting on his lap. I sat him gulp and his fangs start to come out.

“No, no I can't!” He said. 

“Please baby, for me?” I asked with my best puppy dog eyes. 

“Fine.” He sighed and gently turned my head to the right angle. His fangs sunk into my skin and I felt the pain and pleasure. I bit my lip as a little whimper escaped my mouth. KJ held me close and he drank my blood. After a few minutes, he pulled away. I looked at him and my blood was on his mouth. 

“How was it?” I asked. 

“You taste really good babe.” He said and I giggled. 

“Well thank you.” I said and got off him. I wobbled a bit and almost fell, but KJ was quick to catch me. 

“Sorry, I must have taken too much…” He said, guilt clear in his voice. 

“Don’t worry about it, I’ll be fine.” I said and he sighed. He laid me on the couch and placed a blanket over me. 

“I’m gonna get you some food and juice okay?” He asked and I nodded.

“I’ll be right back.” He said and then left. I felt my eyes growing heavier and heavier, I couldn’t keep them open anymore. I closed them, a nap will do me good. 

I woke up and looked around, I wasn’t in KJ’s trailer. I was in our room, when did I get here? KJ walked in and his eyes widened when he saw me. 

“Y/N! You’re awake!” He said rushing over to me and hugging me. 

“When did we get home?” I asked. 

“You’ve been out for a couple of days, I came back and you were passed out. I drank way too much from you, I’m sorry Y/N/N.” He said with a few tears falling from his eyes. 

“Hye, relax, I’m fine.” I said giving him a kiss. 

“This is why I didn’t want to drink from you. I can’t control myself still.” He said and I gave him a small smile. 

“It’s fine KJ, you’ll learn.” I said and he shook his head. 

“I’m never doing that again.” He said and I sighed. 

“Fine… well can we eat? I’m starving.” I said and he laughed. 

“Sure, whatever you want.” He said and kissed the side of my head. 

The next few days I wasn’t feeling well. I got sick and I felt really weak. I couldn’t really walk well so KJ helped me with pretty much everything. After the fifth day, KJ wanted to take me to the hospital. I didn’t want to go because I just thought it was the flu or something, but KJ insisted. We went to the hospital and they ran some tests. KJ was sitting next to me holding my hand while we waited for the results. 

“Miss, Y/L/N, it appears you have some venom in your blood that is making you ill. Have you been in contact with a vampire recently?” He asked and KJ’s eyes widened.

“I did this to her?” He asked and the doctor looked at him. 

“You’re a vampire?” He asked and KJ nodded his head. 

“He’s still getting used to things, he was attacked and turned two months ago.” I said and the doctor nodded. 

“Well, you must not know how to control your venom usage yet because you injected too much into her.” He said and KJ hung his head in shame. 

“So, we just get the venom out and I’ll be okay right?” I asked and the doctor shook his head. 

“Unforchunetly the venom has been in your system for too long, you aren’t going to make it.” He said and KJ’s eyes watered. 

“There has to be something you can do!” KJ cried. 

“Not us, but you can.” He said and we looked at him confused. 

“You can turn her, just before she dies and she’ll become a vampire.” The doctor said and KJ’s eyes widened. 

“No! There has to be another way!” He said. 

“I’m sorry, but either she dies or you turn her.” The doctor said and walked out. 

“KJ, do it.” I said and he looked at me shocked.

“No! I don’t want to put you through this!” He said and I sighed. 

“I love you KJ and I’m not ready to leave you, please.” I begged with tears falling from my eyes. He looked at me with sad eyes. 

“Please KJ, it’s the only way.” I said and he sighed. 

“Okay…” He said. We sat there waiting for my heart rate to get slower. One it did KJ bit his wrist and put it over my mouth. I drank with what little strength I had left and then my eyes shut. 

I woke back up moments later to the heart monitor still flatlining. I looked around and everything was so loud. I covered my ears and closed my eyes tightly, why was the room so bright? 

“Y/N/N, babe, it’s okay.” I heard KJ say. 

"Just keep your eyes closed and I'll get you home okay?" He said and I nodded. KJ left the room for a few minutes and then came back. 

"Okay baby, we're going home." He said and he picked me up. He carried me outside to our car and I hissed when the sunlight seeped through the cracks of my eyelids. 

"There's a blanket in the car, just go under it when I put you in the car okay?" He said and I nodded. He put me in and then quickly up the blanket over my head. The darkness came over me and I felt better. 

"Keep your eyes closed till we get home, your eyes are still too sensitive." He said.

"Okay." I said and I felt the car start to move. After a twenty minutes drive the car stopped. KJ took me out with the blanket still over my head. We got inside and KJ brought me to our room. He laid me down and I went to take the blanket off but he stopped me. 

"Just a little longer, let me shut the curtains and turn the light off." He said and I nodded. KJ came back a minute later and pulled off the blanket. 

"Okay, you can open your eyes now." He said and I did. Everything was super dark and my eyes didn't hurt too much anymore. 

"It'll take a day or two to get used to everything, but I'll help you." He said and I smiled. 

"Thank you baby, you saved me." I said and he smiled. 

"I couldn't just let you die because of me." He said returning the smile.

"I love you." I said and he kissed me.

"I love you too." He said when we pulled apart.

But I was ashamed today to be linked to the olicity fandom. Because we used to be a good one. It changed for the worse when "winning" became more important than the show, when Trash/rpf shipping turned people into assholes because "someone" is not following the script they wrote for him/her and became haters because of that (1. that's coming from someone who was a trash shippers or at least had fun with it and 2. when you supposedly dislike someone but stalk anything he/she says or does, (2/?)

that's being a hater) Now it's the same kind of behaviours I've hated parts of the comic fandom for: wishing bad ratings, creating a messed up hastag like s5susks/arrowisover because you think some are too sensitive when disagreeing with your negativity (pots meet kettle), telling people that #ImwithArrow is "gross" and "naive" (or people who tweet that) and that we're policing their negativity when we tweet that (no...just as you wanna hate, we just want to support what we (3/?)

ike. Do I like everything this season? Nope. Same as with s1/2/3/4 (soapy moments, T dying, too much of some things, mm alive, the lie, susan...). But I have fun watching and I don't want to be made feel like an idiot for that. I don't want these shady people/it's all awfull crowd to be what represents me. And unfortunately, it's what they're doing. Because they'll keep on like that until our ship reunites (and even then) and will get down on anyone that doesn't validate their hate by (4/?)

pretending they're not "hearing our concerns". If we disagree, we'll never tell you "yes, you're right". It's your truth, not mine. I like the season and I truly believe that as a whole it'll be one very cohesive story, no matter how some twists or chapters frustrates me. I don't know what to do. And it's really tiring. Hi Nonnie, I feel your pain, I really do. 

Look, it’s always difficult in big groups to feel like you and your beliefs are being represented accurately. There so many of us who claim the Olicity fandom name, but we’re all so different, with varying personalities, age groups, agendas, perspectives, life experiences et al. We’re all not going to react the same. I know you know that. But knowing that doesn’t always help when you feel like you aren’t being represented accurately by others. When others who call themselves by the same name as you do behave in a way you just don’t believe in. 

The truth is, in a fandom, we’re all connected, whether we like it or not. We’ll all get lumped in under the same amorphous blob of Olicity fandom. So, if one of us is rude and offensive, then we all are. And then most of the time none of us will even be able to agree on what constitutes rude and offensive. What you and I may call embarrassing and horrifying, others might call their right and totally validated. 

It’s tricky. 

People are tricky. 

The human condition is tricky. 

I just keep going back to my mantra about protecting my bubble. If people are behaving in a way I don’t feel comfortable with, I leave. I block them. I don’t go to those sites. I can’t change their behaviour or their opinions by giving my own. They’re exercising their right to free speech, and even if I think it might be a poor use of said right at times, it’s still their right to do so. I’m just going to leave them to do what they feel they need to do while I do exactly the same thing. 

I’m working hard to try and surround myself with people who want to ship the way I do. Now, I know some people will read that and take it as me saying I’m right and they’re wrong with their shipping. No. What I’m saying is I’m doing the kind of shipping that is right for ME. I’m not forcing you to do what I do. Or judging you if you don’t. I’m just doing me. If that makes you feel judged, then I’m sorry, that’s more about you, than me. 

I’m just doing me. 

And I’d love for others who are just doing them in a similar way to say ‘hey’, so we can hang out together and have some fun. That doesn’t mean I need everyone to be endlessly perky about Arrow. They get stuff wrong all the time. Like the end of S3 was a pretty big fail for me, even though I could appreciate why people loved it. It just screwed over a lot of character development for the sake of a surface HEA scene. But I accepted that was the kind of show Arrow could be, because they’d done it before. 

I just figure that if I’m going to stay, then I’m going to root for Arrow to succeed. Not blindly overlook their faults, because that’s not how I go about life. Rather, I’m just happy to go on this journey with them and forgive them if they take me down a few roads I probably wouldn’t have chosen to go down myself. That’s part of the fun of it all, not being in control of everything. 

Hmm... that got a bit rambly, didn’t it, Nonnie? lol Sorry. I guess my point is cut out the people and places in your life that make you feel badly about being an Arrow fan, and hang with the people who make you feel good about it. There are lots of us. We just don’t tend to be quite as in your face, because we’re just over here, being happy and excited. Come join us. The water is warm and even if the sun doesn’t always shine, we still get to enjoy the rainbows together. :D

Planetary Motion

What a strange week, all kinds of things to do. For someone in my shape, you think I’d have just one boring day after another, but I don’t. Things are as fast-paced as I can ever think of. I’ve got on average of seven home health visits per week, two physical therapy sessions, two occupational therapy sessions, two more visits from a home health aid to help me take a bath and an extra nurse’s visit to help me through whatever I’m dealing with at the moment, although that’s going down to once per two weeks now, and then on top of that I’m doing my best to write every day. Kids are in school, I’m going each week to any number of doctor’s appointments from general practice and pain management all the way to neurology, wound care or urology as needed, and I’ve got a wonderful cat, Penelope, who naps on me a lot lately. Sometimes I just flop when it’s time to get back into the bed in the evening. 

Writing

Planning a whole galaxy of planets for world building it is tough work. Maybe I’ve gone too far? I decided as I’ve stalled a couple of times while attempting to begin writing a space opera style story that I wanted to know what all the major planets I wanted to include were. I decided that I just wanted to begin with a few (seven) individual solar systems that were habitable. I could make up stories that took place in those locations for days, and for a while considered having a single solar system where all the action happened. I thought it might be this solar system, with a future Earth at the center, but decided to stay away from that. I wanted light speed, or rather faster than light speed travel as a part of it, so I needed different places to go. So I picked a number and seven seems to be the right number, though I think maybe eight, just because I like the number eight. 

I want to know where everything is, where all the civilizations arose, who knows who, how many intelligent species are out there traveling the spaceways and what all their relationships are. Where are the natural resources, where can people, human or otherwise, live. What is the power or land grabs like. Which groups want single rule per planet, who wants a big empire spanning many planets (and habitable moons and dwarf planets.)

I’ve been working out where my barren and forest moons are, and where large quantities of rock are, and large ones that don’t qualify as planets, but might be good as a pirate base or something. The next step I want to take is to start pinpointing where intelligent spacefaring civilizations started. I want to know where didn’t leap to the stars on their own and where they did, and who first contacted them and whose side they might be on in a conflict. 

I’m barely scratching the surface of these worlds, but I ‘m finding that as I visit each character and planet, they all have a story to tell, and they want to tell me. Scenarios seem to bubble up that want to be stories, now I just have to figure out who is the lead character, because several of them keep raising their hands and want to be featured. 

Health

I had an interesting visit to the urologist this week. It’s not my favorite thing to talk about, but being a (recovering?) paraplegic fir this length of time has caused some issues to come up I wasn’t expecting. For instance, bowel movements have slowed way down, and apparently, I keep catching urinary tract infections because my bladder doesn’t empty as it should. Too much information… I know. I think I’m doing well, but it seems my bladder isn’t emptying fully as it should, and if I allow my blood sugar to spike the organisms already hanging out down in there go Ya-Ha! They have a little party and boom, I’m back up UTI alley. 

I’m very grateful for the chair Medicare just sent me, because it reclines all the way back, which allowed the docs at urology access to my butt. Got a shot in both cheeks with an antibiotic and another prescription for some additional ones to finish this garbage off. 

Twitch

In website news, I’ve integrated twitch into the right-hand panel of the site. I’m toying with a twitch as a way to interact with people. To be literally present Live on camera on my website at times. I’m pretty isolated out here. My wife is my best friend anyway, so it’s the best of both worlds there, but I don’t get to see many others who aren’t doctors, nurses or therapists, and I just wonder if this is the way to stick my neck out there. I miss being able to bring my Dungeons & Dragons books to the lunchroom to see who says hello. Today everything’s digital, so if this is it, then this is it. I was also considering doing the first draft of this year’s NaNoWriMo book on camera. I’m still thinking about that. 

Star Wars

Holy Cow! The Mandalorian is coming to Disney Plus in November and all I have to say is ‘Take my money!’ That’s just all there is to it. The trailer dropped and I’ve been going over it and over it again, maybe not with the depth that some will, but I’ve looked at it my fair share, and like many things from Lucasfilm, I think this is going to be a game-changer in what you can do in science fiction on television. I imagine it won’t be too long before every YouTuber at home has a motion capture suit and the ability to render detailed characters from their basement green screen setup. 

The fact that they are doing this now likely means they’ve mastered this technology among others over the last several movies, to make it affordable to produce quickly for something with the number of episodes to qualify as a television series. Pretty awesome stuff. I’m looking forward to the Mandalorian when it premieres. 

Reading

I can once more read the Catcher in the Rye! J. D. Salinger, someone I thought growing up to be a brilliant writer and mind disappointed me in his age to be one of the most famous hold-outs when it came to delivering his work through any other channel except for print. I’ve loved The Catcher in the Rye for many years, going through Holden Caulfield’s mind as he gathers himself up to return home again after getting ousted from yet another prep school. Salinger refused to release the book in another format, no audiobook, no movie adaptation, and especially no ebook. 

No movie, okay I can get that. It’s hard to get into a good first-person book as a movie without the lead sounding like a film noir detective, so there you have me. I don’t understand not having an audio version though, because among the disabled, as I am now, it cuts the story of from such a large group and that I don’t understand, and denying the ebook? What’s that about? In a world where the bookstore is no longer out there somewhere, but in everyone’s pocket, that seems like a poor business choice. ‘Oh but I love the smell of paper!’ No— you mean mold. Grr. He held out. When he died I found out he left instructions not to release them, and then his son held out… until now. The ebook version has been released. Maybe he needed the money? I don’t know, but I’m glad he did. 

My hands are still incapable of holding a book or turning pages, but I can read anything on my kindle app with the swipe of a stylus. I am very glad to be able to read the book again and have it in my virtual library. An audiobook is apparently still off the table. Maybe eventually. 

I still wonder, where do the ducks go when the pond freezes over? Even though I live in the south where the ponds never do. 

It’s interesting though since reading they were going to do it on the BBC website, they published that sucker to kindle quick!

Therapy

My therapists were excited that we won the eBay auction for an EasyStand XT, though the auctioneer doesn’t seem very interested in shipping it, and we’ve withdrawn our offer. (Because they freaked out when they figured out they didn’t account for shipping the thing…) We’ll see what eBay wants to do about that, but I very much dis;Ike it when people don’t know what they are doing. I feel for them. I’m sorry they haven’t got the wisdom to think about what shipping would cost. The bad thing is I would have happily paid extra for the shipping and worked out a deal. 

My second plan to get one is to go to my local supplier and start working a deal with Medicare for a new one, I’m going to have to pay to ship anyway, so it doesn’t really matter. I’m going to get one either way. It’s just now I’m waiting a little bit longer. That’s all. 

I see myself using one of these days as I get the strength back into my legs for standing up again. I used one of these in the hospital a few times. I need one now. So I’m going to make it happen.
