So, with the main part of this whole thegirlwhorideslikeasamurai (Samurai from here on) situation having blown over, I thought I'd make a final-for-now summary post that outlines the key points in this situation so that I can cap this for the time being. It's also for the people who've stumbled upon one of the many posts about this and have no clue where to start or don't understand the context, because yeah, there's a lot. I've had multiple people reach out who were in that situation, so here's the summary for anyone who's interested.

There are multiple key players in this whole thing but seeing as this post contains primarily my words and take on things (and the others involved have honestly had enough stress about this for one month) I've elected not to tag them. You can find them in the posts I linked to. However, I will note the abscence of any real response from Samurai. I'll get into that further down.

A big thank you to everyone who's contributed to this discussion. It's been wonderful finally getting all this stuff out in the open.

Break for those who want a usable dash or don't care. But I encourage you to do so because this does matter for your fandom experience going forward.

So first, what happened? Well, the first thing to understand is that this whole thing started a long time ago, and the reason it's becoming a big thing now is pure chance. It was going to happen eventually. It happening now is just how it went. But for the sake of cohesion, I'll approach it from where the situation itself arose, especially since it displays some of the behaviours I'll be highlighting later pretty well.

The way this all kicked off was that Samurai posted no. 1 in response to an ask about the canon vs. fanon spelling of Yuuri and Viktor's names. In this response Samurai was pretty rude and demeaning towards Japanese name translation inconsistencies. There was also a minor spelling error. I pointed these things out in a reblog of Samurai's post which can also be found in no. 1. Now, Samurai did respond to this, but not in the way you'd think. She didn't reblog my post. Instead, she quietly edited the spelling error in her original post (just became incorrect in a different way), and then reblogged that new version of her own post and tagged me in it. Strange, but okay, I guess. In her response she apologised for the cultural insensitivity and explained that English was not her first language which, sure, that's fair. However, she also went on to explain the spelling error was actually just a misunderstanding, and then was even more wrong about Japanese in her explanation of that. Go to no. 3 to get an explanation as to why she was doubly wrong. I couldn't be bothered to start anything about this poor response, so I reblogged it so people could see it, said "sorry if I was harsh, have a good day", and went on my way.

Later that same day I then got an ask (no. 3 and 4) about that last reblog which said that I shouldn't have apologised for being right, and explained that Samurai was not a stranger to poor behaviour and bad takes. I was already tired of Samurai and had been for a while, so I answered the ask by explaining that I just apologised to keep the peace, but I was over trying to do that anymore.

And this is where the situation took off from. People started reblogging my post with their own grievances about Samurai, including bad experiences from interacting with her, and I began getting asks where people corroborated these claims and shared their own frustrations. I won't explain those asks and reblogs here since they're in the links at the beginning, and their main points can be boiled down to the following:

Avoiding accountability Samurai has a knack for worming their way out of taking accountability for their actions. She'll divert attention from the issue at hand, she'll use whataboutism to point fingers back in your face, she'll fabricate a sympathetic angle of her actions and use your natural tendency to want to see the good in people against you, she'll make sure you know just how sad and insecure she is, and she'll do it all while talking like she's an expert. Like when she responded to my post but didn't actually admit that the spelling mistake was just that. A mistake. She didn't have some advanced knowledge that she proceeded to explain. She was just wrong. Twice. And she couldn't even just say "Ah sorry, my finger slipped."

Victim complex She's also always the victim. She doesn't get enough engagement? The fandom doesn't understand her. She's trying so hard, why are worse posts getting attention when she makes such high quality stuff? The fandom must be rotting from the inside with no academics left to admire her supreme intellect. Someone posts an anylisis similar to hers? Plagiarism! Thievery! Piracy! It could never be because there are only so many scenes and conclusions to draw about said scene in a show that people have been analysing for eight years. Someone disagrees with a conclusion of hers? Well they're an acephobe, of course! A bigoted Karen who's trying to erase the real academics in the fandom! God forbid someone criticises her? Blocked, blocked, blocked, the fandom is so toxic, omg, she needs to get better at recognising fake friends, smh.

Manipulating the narrative As you might not be surprised, she also loves being in control of what her audience sees of the discourse she gets into. See: her not reblogging my post and instead making a separate post when that was more work than just responding directly. She's also notorious for editing her posts so when people criticise them she can feign ignorance and claim she never said that. And in terms of the individuals who've been intimidated into silence by Samurai and her entourage, if their stories got out, that would be a catastrophe, right? It would hurt her precious reputation after all.

General Manipulation and Gaslighting And yeah, that leads us to the big one. Now, these are hefty accusations and I'm especially bringing up the latter a bit dubiously. However, I think it needs to be said that many of the tactics she uses are manipulation strategies. I'm saying that as someone who's been at the receiving end of these methods. They get you to shut up. They get you to doubt your own judgement. They get you to think things you wouldn't have otherwise. And, most importantly, they get you to forgive things you never would. They worm themselves into your brain and get you to question your own ability to make decisions and understand the world. And that right there where it becomes gaslighting. Again, I'm not saying Samurai is being all that extreme but I am saying that she's leading people down the slippery slope of accepting this type of behaviour by convincing them that it's actually okay because she said so.

Insincerity This overlaps a good amount with manipulation, but I thought it was necessary to point out separately, because she's notorious for it. As was mentioned in no. 12, she has repeatedly displayed disingenuous behaviour across social medias and has used those different behaviours to twist the story into what she wants it to be, so she comes out of it looking either like a victim or like an underdog and saviour of the fandom. Is it a crime to want to look good online? Of course not. Does she use that liberty to fabricate a benevolent image of herself despite repeatedly not living up to said image? Very much so.

Bullying and Namecalling This goes back to how I mentioned her accusing people of being acephobes for not agreeing with her very important and perfectly correct analyses. Beyond this, she has also called people illiterate for not agreeing with her analyses as if these "academic" takes of hers are so obviously right that only someone incapable of accessing the source material would disagree, has called someone a Nazi for using the actual current DSM-5 medical term for autism (as far as I've been informed in private, see no. 3, 4, and 5 for partial context), and has recently become very fond of calling people dicks.

Superiority complex This all of course comes down to the actual issue at the bottom of all of this: Samurai thinks she's better than the rest of us. She thinks she's more academic, more literate, more intellectual, and laments the lack of people who can match her frea- I mean, level. No weird takes on her blog as she says (no. 4). This is a "dick" move to use her own vocabulary but is even worse when you realise that she's not all that academic or intellectual herself. Which, by the way, is completely fine! You don't need a PhD to discuss anime men. However, she makes it sound like that. She belittles posts that aren't as "academic" as hers simply because they upset her or have more interactions. She belittles the entire fandom simply because other people don't subscribe to her lonely intellectual narrative and enjoy fandom casually. She insists that her analyses are better than other metas when the academia she's so proud of isn't even really there in a lot of them. And she will absolutely make you feel worthless for thinking you can contribute to the fandom on her level because no one is as good as her.

Do I really care much about some arrogant loser on the Internet? No. Do I care that she's belittling her entire community by ridiculing their contributions and positioning herself as the one true deliverer of gospel? Absolutely. See, the issue isn't just that she's arrogant. It's that that's not enough for her. She pushes the rest of the community down so that she can feel even more superior. She also routinely complains about her lack of engagement which, wow, what a mystery, what might be scaring them away? But secondly, she's indirectly belittling the support the fans of her content are giving her. No. 11 is from one such fan who experienced this. Let it be made clear that Samurai might genuinely want to form a community and be social, but she does not see herself like the rest of us when it comes down to it. She sees herself as better. Or, at the very least, she posts as if she does.

Okay, that's all well and good, but Arom, why does this matter? Isn't it just petty fandom drama? Why should we care? Well, you should care because the people who've been hurt by this behaviour and those who've left the fandom to be free of it are your peers. They're not random Internet strangers. The next one could be your close fandom friend. The one after that could be you. The reason I'm making this post is so that you can understand how Samurai operates and not fall for her tactics. They're incredibly easy to start forgiving. I've been there. You have to catch this stuff before it turns into something legitimately damaging. I also want you guys to be able to take this situation with you and apply what you've learned to other actually dangerous people. I don't consider Samurai dangerous. To be frank, I consider her an immature embarrassment. Can she hurt you? Of course, but the scope will be limited. However, there are plenty of people of there who are much better at doing these things and do them far more insidiously with far worse goals. I want you all to be able to realise before it's too late. I was in one of those much more insidious friendships once even if the goals weren't any worse than Samurai's. They sneak up on you so damn fast.

And now, because I know some of Samurai's entourage might be itching to hit me back with this: Why is this public? Shouldn't stuff like this be kept private? Isn't this just us bullying Samurai in the hallway where everyone can watch?

Now, if you're a specific person, you'll likely recognise these coming points because yes, they're lifted directly from your ask. However, seeing as this ask was not sent to me (I'll leave you guys to ponder why that is considering all other asks were) and has not been published because the recipient didn't want to spend their energy on it, I'm not going to say who the asker is nor am I going to be speaking to them directly in this part. Rebutting a statement no one but me and a few others have even read wouldn't be fair to the asker. However, the ask brings up some very common points in discussions like this that I want to catch right now before anyone starts thinking those points are good.

So first: Why is this public? Now, on the surface this seems quite reasonable to ask, right? I personally agree that private beef should stay private and that there's no need making a bigger scene out of things than necessary. But this beef isn't private. It's not a one-off thing, and it's not new. It's been happening for at the very least months and has been happening both publicly and privately on different social medias. Oh, also, it has already been attempted to be handled privately. Doing so did diddly squat. People have actually been scared into silence by attempting to handle it like that. Some things just cannot be handled one on one because one party is entering it with malicious intent.

Allegedly Samurai has also been called out in a Discord server before (no. 12) which I can't confirm but wouldn't surprise me. Guess how much that did. Nothing. Nada. Nul og niks. But then you might be asking why a second call-out is supposed to do anything, and that's where I get to the real point of this whole thing: Getting the word out. This and all the previous posts aren't about actually getting through to Samurai because I'm acutely aware that she won't actually change by being told off. She's demonstrated time and time again that she'll simply wait the situation out and then vaguepost about how much of a victim she is and how toxic her ex-friends are.

So, instead of getting her to own up, we're trying to reach everyone else. If we can make people aware of her tactics so that they can avoid her or at the very least be wary around her, I consider that a success. If we can limit her access to victims, we'll have done what we set out to do.

Second: What about Samurai's mental health? Aren't we hurting her by destroying her reputation? Well, dear reader, what about everyone she's hurt? Do they not deserve to talk about this stuff simply because it'll make Samurai upset? This might be a kind of wild suggestion, but there's a very easy way to not be publicly called out for being an arse: just don't be an arse. No one made her do these things. Like mentioned in no. 12, she destroyed her reputation all by herself. If stating aloud what someone has done ruins their reputation, then the person who did said things is at fault. Spare the messenger. They've already been hurt enough. If Samurai had simply owned up to her behaviour and apologised and made a change when people had called her out in the past, we wouldn't be here. She made this necessary. Don't feel bad for her that she's getting what was always coming to her.

Third: Why are we digging up old posts? Isn't it unfair to hold Samurai's past against them? Now, I want you to notice what this whole situation is actually about. Is it about a single incident? No. Is it about a set of repeated behaviours which are harmful and manipulative? Now you're onto something. I agree that digging up unrelated dirt on someone just to slander them for their past when it has no or an at best flimsy relation to what's actually being discussed is mean and unnecessary and should not be done.

However, the point of showing those older posts is to make it clear that this isn't a new thing, and it's repeated and unchanging. Bringing up their posts about being insecure and being sad about not getting traction isn't about those posts, it's about showing how much Samurai clearly cares about interaction and to point out a repeated behaviour of deflecting criticism by hiding behind insecurity and making their own fans feel bad about not being good enough. It's not about the posts. It's about explaining why Samurai is uncomfortable to be around.

Oh and fourth because this is the funniest thing: What about the new fans? They'll think we're all mean and negative! Okay so first of all, and please excuse my French, absolutely dogshit take. "What about the new fans?" Dude, what about the ones who are already here and are being driven away by Samurai's awful and demeaning behaviour? What about the people who've been hurt and are finally being heard? What about when the new fans see Samurai calling others acephobes and Nazis for disagreeing with her? Is that not driving them away? Is that not projecting negativity?

Now, yes, that was targeted towards the asker because oh my fucking stars, I haven't seen a take that bad in a while. If you want to ignore or criticise this point of mine, go ahead because I can't source it and the asker's full statement isn't publicly available so I'm aware that this is a weak argument. But I want everyone to know that if you've been ignored and demeaned and called names for simply trying to assert yourself, you're allowed to be negative publicly. You're allowed to publicly make it clear that someone isn't listening privately and so you're speaking in the only place they can't ignore. You're allowed to not be peachy and positive at all times just because a new fan might come across your post. You don't have to treat every post and word you make public as an exhaustive representation of the entire fandom.

And so, with all of this outlined, I have a personal message for Samurai and Co.: Do. Better. I know you can because I've seen you interact amicably with the fanbase multiple times. I'm not here to tell you to get off the Internet and I'm not here to get you to stop participating in fandom. What I am here for is to get you to treat the fanbase with the respect it deserves. You're not better than people just because you're queer. It's the Yuri!!! On Ice fandom. Basically everyone is queer. Get over yourselves. Develop some maturity and accept that you can be contradicted. Accept that not everyone will agree with you. Accept that just because you point really hard at canon, your analyses will still just be theories. And that's okay. You don't need to be an academic to be part of fandom. You don't even need to be right. You can be straight up wrong and still be allowed to be here. However, you also have to let others do all that stuff too. You can't tell people to be nice and then not be so yourself. Fandom is collaboration which means that sometimes you have to just accept that some members of the group have takes you disagree with or find straight up stupid. However, that does not give you the right to tell them they're doing fandom wrong or claim that your way of doing it is better. Because that's how you come across. Whether intentionally or not, that's the message you're sending. Stop acting suprior. It's actually very easy and frankly embarrasing that you haven't figured out how to not be insufferable yet. You're adults. Act. Like. It.

Finally, and I promise this will he the last thing: What do we do now? Samurai has been exposed, hasn't responded, and will probably just wait for this to blow over. What are we supposed to do with all this information? Well, you're free to choose of course, but my suggestion is to simply keep an eye on her and her entourage. They've so far showed no sign of wanting to change, and if you see them misbehaving, don't be afraid to hold them accountable, or, if you'd rather not be mixed up in this, feel free to shoot me a DM or even an anonymous ask. If I get enough reports or the reports are egregious enough, I might make a follow-up post just to keep people updated.

And if keeping a 40+ year old (yes, Samurai is really that old, I was shocked too) on an Internet leash seems extreme, just remember that she made it necessary. She clearly won't listen when people tell her directly how she's hurt them. In my opinion, some social pressure to behave is in order. All she has to do is be nice and nothing more will come of this. It's up to her. It takes a village and sometimes the entire fanbase.

So, it's up to you, Samurai. Your behaviour will be the direct catalyst for whatever I and others choose to do or not do. All you need to do is behave. If you can do that, we'll get to go our separate ways. If you can't, well, you've seen what that results in. But if you do legitimately make a visible effort to change, I'll gladly make a post about that too. I'm all for a redemption, but you're the one who has to put in the effort. Not your friends, not your fans, not your victims, not me.

Your choice. I'll be waiting.

And to anyone who's dying to tear my head off: Please read all the posts linked to at the top before responding. I'm not naming any names. You know who you are.

The overall colorblidness, microagressive, tone deaf, racially insensitive or however you want to call it behavior of this fandom was already awful enough, but PEOPLE GOING TO A FUCKING PLANTATION, taking pictures with toys (a funko pop of white slave owner Louis btw) as if they're at Disney World and posting it so casually (further info here, here and here)? I don't even think you can go lower than that. That's one of the biggest offenses I've seen on fandom ANYWHERE, of any show/movie/book. I'm appalled.

And I'm glad this escalated enough to the point even British media outlets are writing about this, because WE SHOULD ACKNOWLEDGE IT and people should deal with the consequences of their actions, though I feel for Jacob, Delainey, black fans in general and SPECIALLY NOLA natives will probably see or have already seen this shit. Specially the latter that have to deal with it on a daily basis, because even to this day the generational traumas of their ancestors and themselves are still exploited. The fact they may have WITNESSED IT IN PERSON themselves is disgusting and infuriating.

You wanna learn about racism and slavery in the U.S.? Turn to books and documentaries, if you can't afford them or find any in our country, if you can't ship international products to where you live because access to these things can be complicated sometimes, then read a blog or watch YouTube videos for free (just please check their credentials to know they're reliable and a professional, like an actual historian and check ACTUAL black sources and not white people who may undermine such topics).

You genuinely wanna honor and pay your respects to those people? Then, go to the places YOU'RE ACTUALLY ALLOWED to go, don't focus on taking pictures for social media, just sit down, reflect on where you're standing, pray for those souls, find a local charity that you can donate money to and/or work as a volunteer for a little bit IF YOU REALLY WANT TO HELP, because local communities don't need spoiled individuals who will just be lazy and fillers or cause mess and give them more work to do.

ALSO, shame on people who did see this and said nothing, specially if they spend countless time shitposting, sharing memes or talking about white characters and ships. This happened in late OCTOBER and it's been almost a whole MONTH. And somehow this is only being spread NOW because a British newspaper made an article about it. It should never have happened in the first place, but we should've acknowledged it by ourselves and not just because it went public? If you search the tag, you will LITERALLY ONLY FIND F O U R POSTS ABOUT IT, tops. AND IT'S BEEN ALMOST A FUCKING MONTH. Does this fandom need the Daily Mail or whatever source that was to act with some decency? Are you doing it to look good or out of genuine indignation, respect and empathy for black people, specially NOLA fans? I know some people genuinely didn't know because they avoid certain blogs, tags, block, blacklist and try to curate their dashboards in the best possible way to avoid the mess, follow thousands of blogs and/or a new to the fandom, which is completely understandable, but this WOULD HAVE totally blown up way SOONER if as a collective this fandom cared more. We're talking about some pretty popular accounts, some with 16,000+ followers FOR FUCK'S SAKE. I REFUSE to believe this wouldn't have gone viral sooner if thr fanbase actually wanted to combat racism in the IWTV/TVCverse. Anyway, MAY THIS FINALLY BE THE WAKE UP CALL THIS FANDOM DESPERATELY NEEDS, shamefully way too late, yes, but at least better late than never.

Here is a list of words that I found interesting and occasionally appeared in PingXie fanworks. I couldn't find the exact equivalents for most of them in English, so please excuse me for the long explanation. My friend helped me out, but my knowledge is still limited (⁠^_^⁠;⁠)⁠ゞ

It's not a complete list (and kinda random). Please note that they are mostly used in PingXie/DMBJ fandom, I don't know about other fandoms. I may add some more, if I find it again.

窗户纸 (mtl: window paper) : it's like a trope where they're being so ambiguous and the status of their relationship may not be revealed, but everyone also knows that they are lovers. But I have major issues with the writing/premise/series bc it's just feels so deeply colonized and it's bothered me since it FIRST came out and everyone in middle school and high school was reading it and teachers were assigning it. Like the whole premise for the Greek gods being in the US is that they follow Western "progress" and it completely disregards all the amazing things Indigenous did and our way of life, and also removes the importance of place-based culture for both Greek stories and Native peoples (like okay all the Greek stuff moved to the U.S. but wth happened to all our spiritual figures?? The story completelya cts like Native people weren't here and didn't have complex beliefs and ways of life connected to the land, and the gods were just free to take over here with no issues). A Critique of Good Omens Season 2 by 4 Random Girls (+ for fun, a rewrite of S2's outline)

Did you feel after watching GOmens S2 with your friends that this season could have been… better?

I was excited for S2 and I had some high expectations due to spoilers (yes, I am the kind of person to seek out spoilers to raise my personal excitement for the show). But after a watch party with some friends that had me gaslighting myself into denying the letdowns of this season (I was going through the first stage of grief okay), I’ve come around a few days later to bring a list of problems, gripes, and some suggestions for improvement for Season 2.

(EDIT: I reposted this bc I originally tagged Mr Gaiman according to my friend's suggestion. That was insensitive of me, I'm sorry. Thanks to the person who commented and knocked some sense into me, even if I did get a severe increase in heart rate and my hands were literally trembling after seeing your comment)

Mr. Gaiman, if you're reading this somehow, please don’t take any of this criticism as a personal attack. Like, you’re a prolific writer, we’re just 4 girls with opinions, so I don't think you'd really need to take much of these words to heart. I know I wouldn't.

And to the fandom, well, if you enjoyed S2, good for you! I enjoyed it too! If you enjoyed it in a way you understood but I didn't, that's fine too! This is just the perspective of like 4 girls on some writing decisions we found kinda weird. We all have opinions, we can express those opinions as long as we're not attacking anyone.

More annoying things in S2:

The purpose of the body swap in S1 feels undermined in S2. Like, that was to scare Heaven and Hell into thinking that they’ve grown so powerful that they’ve made their own side. Shouldn’t Heaven and Hell be like, a little more cautious with these two after agreeing to leave them alone?

The Divorce really feels like it’s written solely for the purpose of milking a certain reaction from the audience rather than a natural development for Azicrow’s relationship. Also, with the amount of times these two ‘break up’, it gets boring, okay

Nina and Maggie were just kinda,, there. I’m not quite sure what themes they’re here for, I was lowkey bored anytime they got on screen. Maybe Nina’s abusive relationship mirrors Aziraphale’s relationship with Heaven, but like, idk it’s really not the best mirror. I don’t care about them, okay, they didn’t need to be here and if they did, at least cut down a bit of their time please? The part at the end where they stayed to help was kinda ehhh, the part where they had to tell Crowley about his feelings was even more eh. I’m not sure why they cared so much to tell Crowley about it. I don't hate them, I just wish they could have been written better.

Crowley just waltzing into heaven. In S1 they were undercover and it’s so nervewracking. This time a bunch of demons just see him go up into heaven and don’t even question it. And then a bunch of archangels just come down the lift with him. Like what???

The miracle that hid Gabriel was kinda handwaved away? What was up with that

What was Bee’s plan with storming the bookshop. Wouldn’t that attract a lot of unnecessary attention from the demons and angels? Is discretion not a thing?

They never really explained what was up with Az’s bookshop and the vampire entering rules like???

Angels and demons really do feel like much less of a threat this season somehow

Guess who had “I’ll Follow You Into The Dark” on their playlist? Guess who didn’t follow someone into the dark.

So, I challenged myself to rewrite S2 to make the reveals a little less jarring than them all coming at you one after the other in episode 6 like Voltaire tormenting Candide.

Things we’re building up to:

Aziraphale’s desire to change the way Heaven is run, thus accepting Metatron’s offer

I know the Job episode was a thing, but again, that was only one scenario and not a consistent running theme throughout the season. The Victorian doctors do not count — that’s Aziraphale learning to become more flexible with his morality like Crowley. It doesn’t have anything to do with changing Heaven except maybe showing how much better Crowley is than everyone/j. The magic show definitely doesn’t count.

Also to all those ppl who say that Aziraphale has religious guilt or is going through religious trauma or smth along those lines… idk it feels more like they’re projecting than that being an actual thing shown by the show. If that was the intention, it doesn’t come across like it well enough

It might be believable that Az’s indoctrination by Heaven might cause him to think that being in charge would improve things, but like,, that needs to be actually shown in the show. Show us his doubts after the end of the world. Give us better foreshadowing of his concerns over the past 6000 years, how he’s seen Crowley struggle with being a demon/how he imagines being a demon is like/how heaven has indoctrinated him. Otherwise it’s like he’s learnt nothing over these past 6000 years!

Gabe and Bee’s relationship

This really suffers by being revealed only at the end because the way they act seems suddenly out of character of how we expect them to. We’re all left kinda unsure if they’re actually in love or even know what love is.

An earlier reveal of their relationship and maybe some Bee/Jim interactions in earlier episodes would help with a more gradual acceptance of expectations vs reality

Also, would it kill to have one close-up of the fly? Or even like, Aziraphale swatting the fly away as it flies into his face when he opens the box? That thing is so tiny it’s no wonder it’s so easily missed. Please, I’m myopic

Divorce

I want Crowley to snap so bad at Aziraphale. And with better dialogue than “no nightingales”. I know it’s a reference, but surely we can do better than this!

Aziraphale really caught the idiot ball this season in the most narratively unsatisfying way, and if it weren’t for Michael Sheen playing him it would be even more annoying.

Of course, even though I have many ideas in mind (a one piece/crossover fic, an oblivion fanfic and a story about an AU me and my friend @zombinafonfrankenstein came up with) I'm going to continue writing Dark! Oh, this is a tough one! But if y'all haven't done it yet, go read The Book Thief. That story changed my life, and it made me cry so much. I loved Liesel and Max's friendship, and also Rudy... He was best boy. And Hans deserves the title of best father ever. Oh god I'm crying again, it's been years since I last read it and it's still a fresh wound! A masterpiece.

3) Recommend a fic!

Another tough one, since there's so many fics I'd like to share! I can't name less than five though, because I absolutely adore them and I wish people of the respective fandoms would read them. Sorry.

Honor bound by penwarrior11 (The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion) (this one is part of a series and it is the first fic of it. It follows the story of the game alright, but I love the scenes with Mara and Martin, and also Baurus. A precious little gem.)

Everything by nonman (Half Life: Alyx) (this one began in 2021 and proceeded slowly, as of now I'm waiting for the last chapter but guys, it is great! It gives continuation of the cliffhanger at the end of HL:A and it is written masterfully)

No more dreaming of the dead by @mina-murray-harker (Re-Animator 1985) (I love the style of this one, safe and disturbing and full of movie and music references. I think the Re-Animator fandom would love it to bits just as yours truly does)

Candlelight by @clichejoe (Encanto) (this is still my comfort fic and it is very beautiful, colorful - and the main character is the most lovable oddball researcher ever)

The fear of the ocean by FishingLure (JoJo's bizarre adventure) (this one emotionally scarred me - it's been two years and I still haven't recovered)

4) Recommend music!

Pat Metheny Group's discography. But also Seventeen's discography... No, I have to choose a single song. I must choose a single song or else I'll be here all night! Alright, here we go: Haru No Maboroshi by Superfly. It sounds like a sunset. I used to listen to it when I ended uni lessons late in the afternoon, it gives me a comforting feeling and restores my spirit a bit.

5) Share one piece of advice!

Hmmm, I'd say to never forget yourself. Other people may leave, but yourself is the only one who will never leave you. Some people might see this as insensitive wording, but I truly mean this with all my heart. There's time to be spent in introspection, there's love to be found in ourselves, for ourselves. There's a certain kind of healing that can only occur when you are with yourself. Also, to everyone reading this, regardless of shape color gender and preferences regarding tea - tell people who are dear to you how much you love them and hug them. Spread good stuff, hugs are the best drug - and they're free!!

this tumblr has been sort of my diary for 10+ years, and while i haven't felt as low as i used to (thank goodness), there may be instances of me Posting Through It that some folks may be unfamiliar with if they haven't been following me for a long time (historically, the tag for this has been '#i want off the ride but the ride never ends' if folks want to add that to their blacklists).

also i was being clear that me continuing on business as usual (which is just as likely as my two stress responses are either 'shut down' or 'become obsessed w something to escape The Horrors') doesn't mean i'm not grieving, so if someone messages me, they aren't expecting an immediate response as i might need time to gather the spoons to reply, even if they are someone i'm close to.

I find myself, when I am in pain, wrapping myself up in the same things I loved as a child. They have been a constant in the turbulence of life. 

Those comics and cartoons that fed my juvenile imagination, that gave me something to fall back on, that taught me how to tell a story; they come back to me with every tragedy. 

For a long time I fought it. I am distracting myself from what matters with fantasy and fiction. But with age came a better understanding. I am repairing myself with the things I am built from. 

I am borrowing from better times to bandage the wounds; healing by applying the familiar to the uncanny. 

Do not harm others or yourself. Stay healthy and cherish what you have. Don’t argue, if you can help it, over the internet or in your home. Just return to the comfort of things that love you as much as you love them, and find some semblance of security. Look out for the future.

This Blog Should Never Have Been Made

I am Ace and I am the original creator of MarySueFacePalm and I’d like to finally post my feelings on this blog’s run from 2012 - 2014. If you have, had, or currently enjoy my blog then I beg you to read this post and understand my perspective now. I will be going over:

What I did with this blog

Why it was wrong

Internet Influences and my misguided justification

What mindset I was in

What I did to change

How those changes impacted my view on the blog

How I conduct myself in fandom spaces now

The brief relapses into bad behavior and handling urges to relapse

Hopefully by the end of this post, you will understand why I’ve gone through all of the archive and deleted the vast majority of the reviews.

But first, I would like to say from the bottom of my heart that I am so sorry to everyone who I demeaned, talked down to, and knowingly hurt. Running this blog is one of my deepest regrets. I'm ashamed that this is part of my past.

I will be leaving up fanart people made of our mascot. I will also be leaving up any advice posts (posts that do not include original characters). They’re old and I can’t say I would still follow any of that advice from 8+ years ago, but they're not inherently harmful.

What I Did With This Blog

In short, I abused the power of influence. I used my following of thousands of fans to publicly ridicule people. My critiques were disrespectful, insensitive, cruel, and posted to a massive audience. Shining a negative light on something, mocking it, and then asking people to please not send the authors hate is just so backwards and unrealistic. Firstly, the post itself was hateful in that it was publicly mocking someone's work. Second, of course people were going to send hate. My posts directly led to young people online being dogpiled with cruel words from many strangers. I can't imagine how hard it must have been to come home from school, log onto deviantArt, and see dozens of messages mocking, devaluing, and degrading you.

I would not be shocked if some artists gave up a wonderful creative outlet as a result of my bullying. There's no way to undo the negative impact I've had on people's lives. Not only the people who were directly mocked, but everyone who looked on and saw OCs being dogpiled on for flawed writing. It no doubt discouraged young authors and artists from branching out, taking risks, or even harmlessly indulging in what they like. I made and created a culture of fear within this blog and I should have seen that in the timid asks I got such as "how can I write a good OC, I don't want to end up on a Mary Sue Blog".

I also participated in slut shaming. Characters with revealing outfits were tagged as "slutty". The point that I wanted to make was that I found the outfit choices to be significantly inappropriate for the setting. So why did I contribute to the use of a word that demeans and shames women? Internalized misogyny and a general "not-like-other-girls" attitude from high school that I was growing out of. I remember getting asked why I was using slut shaming when it wasn't even what I was trying to say, and I remember I admitted it was wrong, and kept doing it anyway. The only explanation I ever found was that I thought it was fine to do since the characters were fictional. That's incorrect. How we treat fictional characters can bleed over to how we treat people in real life. It's really embarrassing to look back on and not how I would ever conduct myself now.

Why My Actions (and How I Defended Those Actions) Were Wrong

I would often wrongly defend myself and my actions when receiving well-deserved criticism. I'm going to go over some of the most common defenses I can remember and debunk them.

I would sometimes say that I had every right to be rude and disrespectful and imply that nobody is entitled to kindness. While I suppose that is true, that's not the person I want to be and now I would condemn anyone who knowingly chooses to be cruel without provocation.

I would claim that anything posted online is subject to criticism; and the only way to prevent negative criticism is to avoid posting your work. A very "if you can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen" style argument. This is deflection. Nobody was saying that I couldn't criticize people's work. The issue people were trying to convey was the manner in which my opinions were being delivered (cruelly, and to thousands of followers).

I would claim that my reviews weren't hateful or harmful because they contained good advice. Whether or not my opinions were good/correct/helpful is irrelevant to why this argument is wrong and a deflection. A statement being good advice, and a statement being delivered with malicious intent, are two truths that can coexist. The people I bullied did not need to hear any good advice, and they certainly didn't need to be demeaned in the name of good advice.

I would claim that Fair Use gives me the right to use copyrighted material when critiquing something. It doesn't matter if what I was doing was legal or not. Nobody was saying I should be arrested, they were saying I shouldn't make these posts on a moral basis.

I was so focused on being factually right that I never stopped to ask myself if I was being morally right. I finally realized this when a therapist asked me "Why is being [factually] right so important to you?" and I was finally able to acknowledge that my behavior and justifications for my behavior were abnormal. To ignore the feelings of others so coldly in the pursuit of "dunking" on small artist with opinions masquerading as fact, is almost sociopathic. I could only stomach it because it was online and anonymous, so I could be harmful without having to deal with the consequences of my harmful behavior. I encourage anyone and everyone to always remember there are real people behind every post on social media.

Internet Influences of 2012

A big influence at the time was The Nostalgia Critic and other "angry, sarcastic, childish" critics. What I didn't understand at the time was this angry, sarcastic, and childish persona they adopted was a comedic character and not something to be emulated carelessly. Movie or Videogame writers/directors aren't going to be affected by a review from Nostalgia Critic or The Angry Videogame Nerd. This is because their influence and audience is much larger than that of the critics. Additionally, the directors/authors/etc. are adults who chose to create these movies/games as a profession. The games and movies are sold to the public and the public generally want to know if these commodities are worth their money. The critics in this case provide utility in this regard. The idea that a woman sitting online mocking young hobbyists with small followings in front of hundreds of eyes is even remotely comparable to videogame or movie critics is absolute lunacy. That I ever defended my right to do so by fancying myself a critic is shameful.

My Mindset in 2012-2014 and What I Did to Change

I was 19-21 during the run of this blog and I was going through my lowest point of depression. I wasn't taking care of myself, I was avoidant, I was in a fog, I dropped out of college, and I had aggression issues. Bullying people online was a coping mechanism to feel like I had control and a means to take out frustration and aggression. This does not excuse anything I've done. Coping mechanisms can be harmful to yourself and others; and should be addressed when found to be harmful. I've included this section so that someone out there might learn from my mistakes.

In 2014, two of my closest friends (Gabe and Cherry) finally confronted me about my rages and anger issues. They completely cut all contact with me and explained why. I had been in denial about my depression hurting anyone other than myself up until that point. When I lost them, I finally realized I had made hurting people a part of my lifestyle and had become an abuser to my friends. I felt sick and ashamed, and I resolved to change. I enrolled in Intensive Outpatient Treatment (also known as IOP for "Intensive Outpatient Program") for my depression, anxiety, and anger issues. I spent months going to 5 hour therapy sessions 4 times a week. It was like a job, and I took it as seriously as a job. After that, I continued to go to weekly 1 hour sessions for a few years. Now, I still take anti-depressants, but I'm proud to say I've learned how to manage interpersonal relationships, how to manage my feelings, and most importantly I've learned healthy coping mechanisms.

While my mental state cannot excuse what I've done, I hope people can understand that this blog was a symptom of an unhealthy mind lashing out. It is not something to reflect on positively.

As a side note, Gabe and Cherry were kind enough to forgive me and give me another chance to be the friend they deserve.

A Retrospective Look at the Blog

The humor is dated, lacking, and lazily relies on reaction gif humor. It very much feels like a product of 2012-2014.

It also reads as extremely arrogant and conceited. The expression of my opinions on OCs was not more important than the feelings of others. My opinions never should have been elevated as facts or treated as law. Critique of creative pieces is valid, but the intention behind these critiques was not pure. As I was deleting the posts, I felt ashamed at the way I conducted myself. I considered privating the posts, but there's nothing here worth keeping.

How I Behave in Fandom Spaces 10 Years Later

Now in 2022 I do my best to stay in my lane. If I don't like something, I don't say anything unless specifically asked for feedback. Even then, I give my thoughts in a professional manner. I don't post "snarky" humor anymore because it was never funny, it was needlessly shady and mean. I keep that type of "omg look at this, it's ridiculous" opinion private between friends in DMs, where it can never hurt the author. If someone online posts controversial things to bait discourse, I try my best to move on and not take the bait.

The only exception is if something is harmful. If content is racist, ableist, or promotes risky behavior (s*icide/self-h*rm) then I express my opinions strongly. The key difference is intention. In 2012-2014 I was acting with malicious intent. Now, if I'm putting something down it is because I think it could harm people and needs to be questioned/taken down.

Relapsing into Bad Behavior and Old Habits

Given this whole essay, you'd think I would have completely learned my lesson and would never participate in OC or artist shaming ever again. I wish that was the case.

Around the spring and summer of 2020, Gabe, Cherry, and I made new friends in fandom spaces. We ignored red flags and were complicit in catty attitudes and behaviors that we don't normally condone. Suddenly I was back to wanting to post shady comments to make my friends laugh as we mocked "cringe" content.

But the toxicity festered to a point where Gabe, Cherry, and I finally realized what was happening. Disgusted with our behavior, we vowed to never fall into those old habits again. We also realized that the people you surround yourself with have an impact on your own behavior. It is your responsibility to choose your friends wisely because those are the people you will be receiving encouragement, social queues, approval, disapproval, criticism, and validation from. If your friends are toxic, it will rub off on you one way or another.

We immediately tried to express discomfort with those friends and explained our perspective, but most of those friends we no longer have contact with.

I feel like leaving shady comments online was only satisfying because I had people gassing me up and cheering me on and laughing along with me. It was like that in 2012 with the followers of this blog and 2020 with those former friends. I'm still learning, and my 2020 experience reminded me that you should always question be willing to question and think critically about your behavior. "Am I behaving like the person I want to be right now?"

A Note on the Other Mods

I could have tried to track down the other mods and asked them if they wanted to add anything for closure's sake. I didn't because at the end of the day I was the one who made the blog, created the format, and set the tone. While everyone is responsible for their own words, I was a ringleader and the responsibility of this blog should fall on me.

I know Gabe and Cherry also look back on this blog with discomfort at their behavior. I'm sure the other mods do to. We've grown up and can see this was all wrong.

Why Did You Post That You Would Restart the Blog?

For years now I've been trying to think of how to absolve and distance myself of this moral failure of a blog. In 2020 I briefly thought I could give MSFP a redemption arc of positivity and advice. It ended up not feeling right. It felt like a step backward instead of a step forward, or like I was sweeping my wrongs under a rug instead of acknowledging them.

My Future

I wanted to post this so I can finally put this old shame to bed. Admitting to my mistakes cannot undo the damage caused, and I'm not asking for forgiveness from anyone. I wanted to post this retrospective so I can finally feel like I've apologized and acknowledged this regret. I posted a journal on deviantArt back in 2017, I believe, but this needed to be done on the main platform and it needed to be done right. I was not pressured or cancelled. I just want to do this for my own mental peace. I hope people find a lesson in this. It took me years to figure it out for myself.

I’m really sorry, I was the anon who asked about marichat art. I didn’t phrase my question well, and I’m very sorry that it hurt you. I do love all of your art, not only the ladybug stuff. I just noticed you’d stepped away from the fandom and was genuinely curious about why. But if it’s not something that gives you inspiration anymore, that does make a lot of sense. (And it’s honestly not something you should have to explain, so I appreciate that you did respond.)

I’ve actually been following you for around 2(?) years or so now and your creature art has become some of my favorite on tumblr. (I love the weretober drawings so much omg but also your Creatures!!! With Fangies!!!!!)

I also read your tags and words won’t fix how you feel, but I know for a fact that your art has improved. It’s been amazing seeing the changes in style you’ve gone through and your digital painting technique is freakin *chef kiss*. Not to mention your anatomy sketches are actually breathtaking. Seriously, I’ve used them as reference for my own practice because they were better than my art teacher’s. And yes, i have stepped aside from the fandom because of all the salt that the show doesn't deserve. And when i tried to defend it i only get insults (twitter) or people dismissing that i love the show and i want to talk about it in a good way instead of always "critics" (discord. Happened in 2 servers of one i was kicked out)

I do love the show and Marichat is still my number 1 OTP. I still make liveblogs and some commentary and/or shitposts. But i will draw when i have inspo for it. Rn i prefer doing creatures or animals (The Lion King specifically) than humans/romantic stuff because so far the only ideas i have is Marinette/Chat hugging it out and comforting each other and there's just enough poses of hugs that i can use lol and there's you know, that whole thing about feeling i have been forgotten by the fandom even tho like half of my digital works are just Marichat or ML related.

And thank you for the compliment about my art style even tho i still feel like it's shit lol. Eye of the beholder, they say, right? I still need to work over my self deprecation. Im glad some of my works helped you.
