I don't like hajime sorayama's joan of arc piece, not because it's "sexualizing an underage historical figure" (I disagree; joan of arc is often used in artwork as a symbol to represent many themes such as martyrdom, independent womanhood, religious devotion. I don't think it's fair to the artist to interpret it so literally, calling it a sexualization of a historical figure makes it sound like it's RPF on ao3) but because frankly I just think it's a very shallow attempt at portraying modern feminism. very western #girlpower vibes going on. hes just further feminizing a symbol of powerful, self righteous womanhood. nothing against the guy really I don't know him but the piece is kind of lame and fails it's attempt at a feminist message. imo.
(something to say about his artwork often feminizing/eroticizing the inanimate, often fusing woman with metal. not entirely sure What to say really, but it further contextualizes what he creates and why; the armor is so erotic and feminine for the same reasons he draws sexy cyborg ladies. not sure if its my thing though.)
#charlie words#sorry for the art analysis ramble i jsut disagreed wirh someone on the internet and needed somewhere to say my thoughts#you can feel however you want about historical figures being used as symbols btw but no matter what its unfair to interpret literally#when the intention wasnt such#personally i think incorporating views of history and historical events into artwork can be beautiful and lovely.#even if its through eroticism. im not one to limit thematics
