The Festival of Shadows: Emergence.
[The following is a short companion piece of written fiction for the Festival Shadows Event on E_TernalShadows twitch channel. I'm just writing it because I want to and creating lore for my Avi is fun.]
Oct 19th, 2023 10:30 PM
The night was eerily still, even for the city. It left him on edge as he vividly recalled the nightmares he had been having for weeks of a man... no it was something that was no longer a man. A being that had surpassed mortal bounds and was twisted for it. Of legions of dark cackling things with glowing gold eyes.
He rubbed his temples as he stood with his partner as they continued the night watch. His partner being more animate than him. "I really don't understand what they think is going to happen." He commented making him realized how long he had been sloppily inattentive.
"I'm sorry, could you say that again?" He asked politely.
"I'm saying I don't understand what the big deal is with that relic." His partner reiterated. "Sure it's a relic from back during the mythic ages, back when Dragons and other monsters walked this earth. However, magic like the rest of those things is now extinct so what's the point?"
"I mean...yeah? But isn't it strange that all of those that used to exist just....disappeared? Like one day we had wizards, then next thing the history books are writing about how civilizations collapsed as magic just poofed."
"Like it will just suddenly reappear." His partner scoffed. "Listen to you, rookie. I know that some are talking about how you're the seventh son or something but magic is gone, it ain't coming back."
He opened his mouth to respond however he was stopped by a sound coming from nearby. Like a pulse, one that they felt more than heard.
"Did you feel that?" He asked as his partner seem to stiffen like he was given a full dose of the heebie-jeebies.
"Yeah, hold on, Rookie, I'm calling this in." His partner said as he pulled out his radio while preparing his gun just in case. "Security office, this is Officer Martin, I'm in the back entrance with the Rookie, Watchman Richards. We just heard....felt something. Is everything going on okay inside? Over."
"Officer Martin, we also felt it. It's like it's right on top of the building. We're planning on evacuating the building immediately. Standby, over." The lady in the security office ordered over the radio.
"Roger that, over." Martin responded before he moved to Richards. "Okay, Rookie, we're going to be evacuating and waiting for help. So make sure you stay calm and fol-." Martins began to say to Richards before all hell seemed to break loose. The pulse from before returned, now a erratic heartbeat of energy that consumed the building they were charged with guarding. "Fuck!" Martin cursed as he began trying to reach those still inside but only got radio silence. Not that they had much time before they were suddenly accosted.
Creatures made of shadows with eyes of gold surrounded them. And though Martin's efforts with a gun were valiant, the horde didn't seem bothered by his bullets. Richard swung at what was in reach from his club and struggled. He couldn't back down though.
He reached for a store of energy that wasn't there before and with a yell his club turned into a blade of glistening light that banished the creatures and cleared a way for them before vanishing. Though Martin was stunned, he quickly recomposed himself barking at the Rookie to hurry so they can regroup seeing that they were not in a defensible position.
As they got away from the building, Richards looked up at the building and saw how the once squat four floor reasearch center now became a towering enigma into the abyssal night.

Ugh. Personal under the cut.
So I lived through a lot of shit from my family. If anyone here knew me on my old, deleted blog from my teenage years, you might remember some of the uglier details. A lot of the small things are more or less lost to time, but it wasn't a good situation. I moved out on my own in October 2018, and I haven't gone back.
After a long fight that really started when I came out as a lesbian, I finally made the decision in May 2023 to cut contact indefinitely with my parents and older sisters. It just got bad, guys. My mom texted me about family plans I wasn't invited to (and not to invite me, either) and I spent an entire afternoon on the floor, sobbing and wondering what's wrong with me that I'm so unlovable. I just couldn't do that to myself anymore. I had to make a choice about my personal health and sanity, and keeping that relationship intact wasn't the right one.
So I haven't talked to my parents or older sisters in slightly over two months at this time. But there's a little compounding factor making it painful now, which is the fact that I have a little sister. She's 13 years younger than me (13 years, 2 months, and 10 days if I got the math right when I was 14 and bored) and she still lives with Mom and Dad because she's in middle school. I don't know about you, but where I'm from, it's a little bit illegal for a middle schooler to live on her own. So of course she lives with our parents, she's a minor.
But yesterday, I realized how long it's been since I talked to her. It made me so sad because that kid is so amazing, y'all. She's so bright and brilliant and hilarious, and she's the only one in the family who matches my goblin energy and hyperbolic humor. She's so interested in so many things, curious and loves to learn even if school makes her anxious and cranky; when she had the option to take a drafting class, she told me all about it and said she hoped she'd be able to do it, just because she was so excited about it. She loves Squishmallows and Among Us and BioShock and the Arkham games, though I don't know if she ever played the last two without me because it was our thing for a while. She's so smart and catches on so fast. When I last saw her, we worked on story problems for her math class and I taught her how to turn the words into equations and solve for the missing variable. She wears a million bracelets like a true emo, she's allergic to latex and has had mylar birthday balloons since she was 1 and has never tasted a banana because of it, and she worked so damn hard to come to a point where she wasn't afraid of sleepovers and new foods and crowds anymore.
I miss that kid so much, y'all. She's amazing, and I want to hold her close and tell her she should never listen to anyone who tells her she's unworthy or less than because she can reach the stars if she wants. She could be anything she wanted to be, purely because she would think of a way to make it happen before her anxiety even had a chance to talk her out of it. I want her to know I love her so much, I'm so sorry I was a shitty big sister as a teenager, I was sick and hurting and nobody got it but that didn't excuse anything, and I want to tell her I'll disappear anybody who breaks her heart and I don't care if I catch a charge for it.
She's such an amazing kid. So wonderful. One of my favorite people on Earth, honestly, but.....if I text her, will she even respond? If she responds negatively, will I keep myself safe?

A Weekend in Paris
Five months have passed since New Year's Eve on the roof. The group of friends had been so happy since then. Farkle was overjoyed to be with Smackle again even if it was long distance. In a couple of days that distance would be no more. He would be in Australia with his beloved and they could pick up where they left off the day she had left for Australia. Video chats and late night phone calls were ok, but nothing could compare to the moment he would see her in person for the first time in months. Everyone had come with him to the airport and he was glad they did. He knew he would miss a lot while he was gone but would see them at the end of the year. They all had plans for the summer. Plans that didn't really include the group as a whole. Maya and Josh would be spending the summer in Philly with his family. Zay and Sara would be staying in the city, as Zay was doing some summer theater and Sara was working. Riley and Lucas would be spending the summer in Texas and Lucas had some big plans for Riley. Lucas had mentioned his plans to Farkle and he couldn't be happier for them. Riley was about to have a summer she would never forget.
Chapter 1 (x)
 Chapter 2
Sunday, June 4, 2023 at the apartment of Cory and Topanga Matthews
Topanga Matthews was just putting the finishing touches on the salad she was fixing for the big going away dinner she was having for Riley and Lucas and Maya and Josh. They were all going away for the summer and it was the perfect opportunity to have Shawn, Katy and Zay and his girlfriend over for dinner. The main course had been fixed and Riley and Maya were setting the table. Topanga was already dressed for the evening and was waiting on Cory to come downstairs. Auggie was over at Ava’s until dinner time which was in an hour. She and Cory were due down at the bakery to meet Lucas. He had asked if he could talk with them privately before dinner. Topanga had been expecting this conversation for a while now. She just hoped Cory wouldn’t flip out and go crazy on Lucas.
“Great job, girls the table looks great. I think everything is under control. Riley, your father and I are going to go down to the bakery and pick up the cake I had made for desert.” Topanga informed the girls.
“Mom, you know you didn’t have to go to all of this trouble,” Riley said, “but we sure do appreciate it.” Riley walked over to where her mother was standing by the couch and hugged her. Maya followed and hugged Topanga as well.
Topanga placed an arm around each girl and told them, “It’s no trouble at all. I just saw it as an opportunity to get everyone together one more time before you leave for the summer. I really can’t believe you’re going to be in Texas all summer, Riley. I’m going to miss you so much.”
“I’ll miss you to, mom. I’ll be home in August though in plenty of time for classes to start and maybe we can do something together then or you and dad could always come to Texas for a few days.” Riley suggested to her mother.
“Maybe we can squeeze in a trip to Texas. We’ll be seeing Maya and Josh in Philly so maybe we could find a few days to fly down to Pappy Joe’s ranch.” Topanga added. “Auggie would love the ranch.”
Just then Cory yelled, “Topanga! Do we really have to have people over tonight. I wanted to hang out in my sweatpants and watch the baseball game on TV.”
As he appeared in the doorway from the hall Topanga turned and looked at him and said, “I told you about this a week ago, Cory. You were okay with it then, what’s changed?”
Cory walked into the living room and smiled as he saw her with Riley and Maya and said, “Because if we don’t have the going away dinner than neither of the girls can leave and they will be here with us all summer. Like they should be. I didn’t okay any trips with boys!”
Maya was the one to speak up, “What’s the matter, honey? Are you afraid that Riley and I will have too much fun without you around this summer? Come on, Matthews, we’re big girls now. It’s time to let the little birdies leave the nest.”
“Not ready! Topanga tell them they can’t go.” Cory pleaded with his wife.
“Sorry, honey. Maya’s right. We need to go to the bakery and get the cake I had made for desert, come on.” She grabs his arm and heads to the front door. “Bye, girls. We’ll be back soon!”
The door slammed and Maya looked at Riley and asked, “What do you think that was all about? Matthews was acting weirder than normal.”
Riley just laughed and shook her head at her father’s antics, “Who knows. But he wouldn’t be my dad if he acted normal. Come on Peaches, let's go get changed for dinner. I brought that new skirt of mine you wanted to borrow.” Riley grabs Maya’s hand and they disappear up the stairs and down the hall.
Once they were in the hall and closed the apartment door, Cory stopped Topanga and asked her, “How can you be so calm when you know what Lucas wants to talk to us about?”
Topanga just looked at him, smiled and said, “Cory you’ve known this day would come since she was 12 years old and first met Lucas on the subway. You’ve known ever since he asked us for our permission to take her on their first date. You’ve known this day was coming even when she brother-zoned him in Texas and through that God-awful triangle. You’ve known this since that day at the ski lodge when he gave her that jelly bean and they chose each other. They love each other and want to be together, this is the next logical step and when Lucas asks us for our blessing to marry our daughter, you’re going to look that boy in the eye and say yes. Then you’re going to stand up and shake Lucas’ hand and welcome him to the family. You love Lucas and he has never done anything to make us question his love for her and now he wants to make the ultimate commitment to her and she deserves every bit of happiness that he can give her. Just as Lucas deserves all the happiness she can give him. They belong together, Cory. Don’t they remind you of two other kids that had stars in their eyes not too long ago?”
Cory smiled and knew exactly who Topanga was talking about, “Yes, they do. What ever happened to those two crazy kids?”
“They got married and had two beautiful children and lived happily ever after and today they are going to go give their daughter that same future.” Topanga said.
Cory looked at Topanga with a tear in his eye, “This is really happening isn’t it. We’re going to give Lucas Friar our blessing to ask our little girl to marry him.”
“Yes, honey. That’s exactly what’s going to happen.” She had tears as well. Cory put his arms around her and held her as they each quietly thought back to the day they brought that little girl home from the hospital and all the joy she has given them her whole life. Topanga pulled away from him, wiping a tear away that had escaped. She took his hand and led the way to the elevator and out the door and down the street towards the bakery.
