No Cut Strings News
I have made my fic a user only, moderated comments story. I’ve continuously been receiving a slew of hate comments from Guest accounts, so I’ve decided to make it less easy to leave such comments. I do delete them as I see them, but that doesn’t mean I haven’t read them. Reading such comments makes me want to delete my fic. Reading that my choice to change relationships, how certain characters are viewed, and so on is “wrong” “disappointing” “story-ruining” and whatnot isn’t conductive to writing. Having to repeatedly defend the way I’ve written certain things, like Legacies and Artemis, is not conductive to my writing. I understand it doesn’t make sense yet, but that doesn’t mean it will not make sense yet.
I’m tired of passive aggressive and hate comments. It takes a lot to write long chapters with intricate sub plots. I could have just deleted my fic since it was my first thought but I decided not to punish the people who have left good comments and kudos. I know that there were some guest readers who weren’t anywhere close to the issue but there were plenty of guests who did participate. Deleting comments doesn’t mean I don’t remember what they say. I’m sorry for the guests who did leave kind comments, but this is the only way my fic stays up.
Furthermore, the next chapter will not be coming out until the end of August or the beginning of September. This is due to the fact I will be going through the previous chapters and editing them. Since I’ve had to deal with health and family issues my editing wasn’t a priority. I have the time to actually edit now and want to take advantage of it.
EDIT: I didn't think this would have to be said, but please do not go onto my other fics and comment about this one. Do not go onto those fics and ask when I'll update, why I chose to private the story, or if I'll undo what I've done. It's private. As are my other stories thanks to the slew of comments I just had to delete. I'm not going to apologize for looking after my mental health. I'd rather make the stories private than deal with the constant want to delete the story and I feel like that's mutual.
From now on I have a few rules, if they aren't followed I will delay the next chapter's post.
Don't ask for updates in my comments, DMs, or Discord
Don't post under one story about the other- especially when they're two different fandoms
Don't post rude comments in reply to someone else, it will get deleted and I will Block you. (You'll still be able to read it but can no longer comment.)
If you leave a hate comment I will Block you, delete the comment, and report you to AO3
I'm beyond done with everything I've listed above. I used to write more than I do now, several fandoms going on at once, but stopped due to how toxic fanfiction can be. I don't want to be rude, but I do want to make sure everyone who reads my stories understands: I'm not going to continue to be treated this way.
Thank you to those of you who don't act like this. I'm sorry if you're being punished due to your fellow reader's behavior.

Surface Tension
w/ c.s x reader (ft. p.sh)
g/ romance (rated mature), friends with benefits
w.c/ 1000
a.n/ happy birthday to our strong mountain, sannie! a long over due piece that was collecting dust since last summer. if you see any mistakes, you didn't.
playlist/ ‘nightly attractions’
t.w/ profanities, sexual themes (no smutty actions), one night stand
Delayed. Delayed. Delayed. The announcement said it was railway signals trouble. It was alright. You didn’t mind the extra time given to you unexpectedly. The summer storm didn’t let up and you were far too comfortable tucked into your seat by the open door, letting bits of raindrops showered you when strong gusts of wind blew past. Way into the late night, the train was sparsely filled, the passengers made themselves comfortable, each taking a corner of the cushioned benches. It would be a while until the signals were fixed.
The earphones clinging in your ears played the local night radio. You caught something along the lines of Playlist Saturday, ‘Nightly Attractions’. Maybe it was fate toying with you because the moment the first song played, a stranger stepped onto the train and sat across from you.
A little bit older, a black leather jacket. A bad reputation, insatiable habits. He was onto me, one look and I couldn't breathe.
You bit the inside of your cheeks, profanities halted behind your teeth. Camila Cabello shouldn’t be this on point.
Sharp fox-like eyes bore into yours, twinkling with dark mischief. The air was knocked out of your lungs. Rosy bitten lips quirked into an insolent smirk and you wanted to smack it off his face. The slightly oversized leather jacket framed his physique like it was only made for him. Everyone had a leather jacket, his shouldn’t be this supple and perfect. It bothered you. How could a person be so fatally charming? Fuck this physical attraction.
It reminded you way too much of your ex. Because there was a slight familiarity in his appearance. Strangers at arms. You had seen him around before but always in the company of your ex’s friends circle. Ex. He wasn’t even your boyfriend, friends with benefits at best. Park Seonghwa wasn’t your boyfriend and never did he ever introduce you to his friends. He could fuck anyone he wanted and so could you, neither of you was exclusive. It shouldn’t be a crime for you to check out his friend but it left you with a tinge of guilt. You didn’t even know his name. The stranger across from you shouldn’t be your rebound for a heartbreak of unrequited feelings.
You wanted to move to a different carriage yet here you were glued to your seat. Hopefully, you have ironed your face to stoicism. You were not sure how you were going to keep your composure if the train didn’t move soon. All you needed was to transfer to Line 3 and hoped the familiar stranger didn’t have the same stop as you.
I don't give a damn about your bad reputation. Baby, I don't play with that pretty ting.
He raised his hand in greeting. You felt your heart sink slightly. You didn’t know he recognised you. So much for a peaceful stormy night, you pulled out one side of the earpiece, letting the other stay lodged to provide you some distraction.
“A bit late for you isn’t it? Had fun with Seonghwa?”
You scoffed at his question, what a menace. You didn’t work the night shift to be associated with that bastard. His smirk widened at your reaction.
“Why? Wish it was you, pretty boy?”
His eyes turned into little crescent moons as he laughed, dimples showing on his cheeks.
“I wouldn’t mind really. But would you tumble to bed with someone so close to your… hmm, not boyfriend… Ah! fuck buddy!”
There was a guitar riff playing in your ears, tantalisingly sexy, you could move to this song slowly if you were at the bar or club somewhere. You stared at the man in front of you, you were not angry, just mildly pissed. He got under your skin so fast. Never judge a book by its cover indeed. So sweet. So sharp. Your words unintentionally matched the song.
“Go fuck yourself.”
The announcement crackled through the train. ‘We are sorry for the inconvenience-‘ You didn’t bother to hear the rest. The doors closed and the train lurched, rocking you and the leather clad menace in front of you. He didn’t say a word but merely gazed at you with a neutral expression, observing, being in tune with your mood. Your phone buzzed and you rolled your eyes at the notification, head thrown back, smacking against the train wall with a thud.
[do not reply]
you free tonight?
wanna fuck?
After being ghosted for two weeks and feelings toyed for months? Yea, no. You were not free. The quirk of his sharp eyebrow tempted you. He was just convenient, you told yourself. No strings attached.
“Hey, pretty boy. What’s your name?”
His eyes narrowed, piercing you to your seat. He was smart. You gave him that much. Much sharper than he let on, “Don’t you think it’s rude to use someone? You would know best.” He nodded to your phone, “Against my own friend nonetheless.”
You shrugged. “He’s neither my boyfriend nor friend. Like you said, we were fuck buddies at best. Didn’t you say you wouldn’t mind?”
“True but didn’t you also said and I quote ‘go fuck yourself’?”
You scowled at him before shrugging, whatever it wasn’t a big deal anyway. You were only wanting to get back at Seonghwa. His loss for letting go of a one-night stand offer.
‘For Line 3 please change here.’ You stood up and went to the door, it happened to have to open on his side of the carriage at your stop. He stood up too, he had the same stop as you unfortunately, the almost predatory presence made your skin tingle. His eyes were dark and mischievous, the shit-eating grin was back on his face, more playful than his ‘if looks could kill’ gaze. His finger laced with yours, pulling you along to the empty platform.
“It’s Choi San by the way. So you know whose name to scream.”
But you know that it ain't real, know that it ain't real.

Part One: Abstinence Makes The Heart Grow Fonder. (Rock And A Hard Place S09E08)
Episode Summary: Sheriff Jody Mills enlists the help of Y/N and the Winchesters to help investigate multiple kidnappings that belonged to the same chastity group. The three decide to infiltrate the group for themselves. But things go wrong when Y/N and Dean disappear. Sam and Jody must rescue them before it’s too late. Pairing: Dean Winchester x Reader Word Count: 5,223.
Previous Part | Supernatural Rewrite Masterlist
NOTE: Yes, this is a repost. I edited a few things around because I didn’t like it when I read it over. Took me a few days to actually get around to doing such thing. Sorry about that, but please enjoy!
Dean wasn’t sure if he should be concerned at the state he found you in when he walked into the kitchen this morning, or take a picture to tease you about this later. It seemed you were in the process of eating breakfast before you somehow fell asleep at the table, your head cradled in your arms as you quietly snored, notifying Dean that you were in a deep sleep. You hadn’t taken a hunt in the past couple of days since coming back from New York, giving you and the boys a chance to catch up on some sleep between looking for jobs and trying to figure out how to fix the mess Metatron made. While you helped when you could, your sleep hadn’t been disturbed all that much. Dean thought this might have been the first time since you started hunting you’ve gotten a healthy amount of sleep.
He could tell because you slept like the dead last night. Dean had to lovingly, but quite forcefully, push you off his chest so he could get a jump start on the day. Normally it was you who slipped out of bed first and Dean eventually got himself up. Instead you rolled over to your side of the bed and slept for another twenty minutes before you got up. You seemed your usual self when you woke up this morning, eyes half-shut and grumpy, signaling to him you forced yourself up against your own will. On mornings like this Dean learned to wait until your first cup of caffeine to speak a word to you. It seemed you had just done that from how the pot was still hot and plenty full for everyone else. But for some reason, you were still exhausted and in need of a little cat nap.
“Sweetheart?” Dean quietly spoke out to you, making sure to keep his voice at a soft enough level so he didn’t disturb you from your slumber. Normally you were a light sleeper on a good day. He made his way over to the table and leaned over to see your peacefully sleeping face. You were out cold. His lips twitched into a small smile at how adorable you looked. Dean knew he was going to get it from what he did next, but to hell with the consequences. He never got the chance to prank you like he did with Sam.
Dean made his way over to the table with a bowl in hand and a little too roughly dropped it down, causing you to wake up abruptly and with a rush of panic. The man snickered to himself behind his coffee cup as he watched you frantically look around the kitchen wondering where the noise came from. When you realized who was to blame for your rude awakening, there was a few second delayed reaction before you rolled your eyes.
“Good morning, Sleeping Beauty.” Dean greeted you, smiling from the way you tried to fix your disheveled hair and smooth down your wrinkled top. “Did I disturb you?’
“What? No.” You mumbled. You rubbed your eyes like a tired child and forced yourself to keep a yawn from escaping your mouth. Sam happened to come into the kitchen right as you dropped your arms into your lap. The younger Winchester gave you a slightly confused reaction at your groggy demeanour. Your face scrunched up in annoyance from his lingering stare. “What are you looking at, Sasquatch?”
“Did you get any sleep last night?” Sam asked you out of concern, wondering if a bad nightmare kept you up most of the hours. None of you were strangers to restless nights due to a wandering mind that went to dark places you traveled to. Your entire life was a living nightmare, your past troubles liked to come and haunt you when you tried to sleep. But it seemed that wasn’t the case for you.
“On the contrary, she slept like a drunk baby. I had to pry her off me this morning.” Dean answered his brother’s question for you on his behalf. “And I caught her napping on the table.”
“Before either one of you waste your breath, I’m fine. It’s just…I’m fine.” You reassured the younger Winchester before he could bombard you with his typical worried expression and a follow up question. Despite your lack of a proper answer to explain your exhaustion, you didn’t want them to worry. They liked to over exaggerate things when it came to you. It's always been that way. Lately you didn’t want them looming over your shoulder, asking you every few minutes if you were feeling okay. Before either one of the brothers could drag out this conservation farther, you quickly changed the subject. “How’s Kevin? Has he found anything yet?”
“Jack. He’s on about four days of no sleep.” Dean said. He grabbed the box of cereal and poured himself a bowl while Sam joined the both of you at the table after fixing himself a cup of coffee. “He looks worse than you.”
“Dean, please. You know Sammy doesn’t like it when you flirt with me out in the open like this.” You replied with a sarcastic remark with a little hope the boys might think you were in decent shape after all if you were able to keep up with the petty banter. Despite how you looked. Somehow you thought you might feel worse. “What about Crowley? Do you think he might be lying about the whole ‘Metatron spell being irreversible’ thing?”
“Crowley lie?” Dean pretended to sound shock at such a possibility, causing Sam to scoff between sips of his coffee. While the situation was grim, there was a small silver lining that you might be able to use to your advantage over the demon. “I do know one thing. Next time that junkie’s jonesing for a hit of blood, we got leverage.” You were about to agree with the plan, knowing it was better than anything you had, but the words failed to come out of your mouth. Instead a rather loud yawn escaped first. “Seriously, you want a pillow?”
You rolled your eyes from your boyfriend’s concern hidden behind his behavior. “I’m fine.”
“You don’t look so good, Y/N.” Sam shared his concern along with his brother’s. He’d been silent for most of the conversation since settling beside you. It didn’t take much observations to see you weren’t looking that great as of lately. He was starting to grow uneasy with the possibility that there might be something wrong with you. Something deeper than you realized. “Do you feel like you’re getting sick?”
“I’m not sick. I just—I feel like my battery can’t recharge.” You admitted to them, trying to explain how you felt to the best of your ability to them. “I don’t know. It’s probably just stress or something.”
You reached for your bowl of soggy cereal when the room fell into a moment of silence. The brothers glanced over at one another from hearing how you felt. A string of unspoken words were said between them as they processed what you explained about your current situation. You were being held together from the inside out with duct tape and angel grace. Things weren’t moving quick or as efficient as they wanted. Despite wanting to talk about it, Ezekiel remained silent on a possible reassuring update, choosing to stay silent.
You scooped up a spoonful of flakes and stretched out your head to take a bite, only stopping at the sound of a cell phone going off. Dean reached a hand inside his pocket to pull out his phone after realizing it was his own and answered the call. The person on the other line was a familiar one to the boys, you however gave the older Winchester a slightly confused expression at hearing the name he greeted.
”Who’s Sheriff Mills?” You whispered to Sam, wondering why the name sounded a bit familiar, just not enough for you to put a face to a name.
“Jody Mills? The sheriff up in Sioux Falls? We worked on a case with her years back with all the dead people rising in town?” Sam tried refreshing your memory. You thought about it for a second before shaking your head, coming up blank. He tried to resist the urge to pass his brother a look of disbelief as he continued on to try and jog your memory. “She went on a blind date with Crowley and nearly died.”
“Oh.
Jody.” You finally figured out who was on the other line, your fingers snapping at your eureka moment before the call could be put on speaker for all of you to talk to the woman to see what she was calling about.
“Uh…I got a bit of an oddball to pitch your direction.” Jody said. You leaned forward to listen to the call better as you placed your elbow on the table to cradle your head. For a second you swore you heard a faint sound of something crashing in the distance. “A small town I cover outside of Sioux Falls—only crime to speak of being the occasional cow tipping. Then last week, four people go missing.”
“All right, so, what makes you think this is our kind of weird?” Dean asked the woman.
“I’ve got a witness who says he saw someone lift an S.U.V. to nab a girl last night.” She told you the key detail that made her think of the boys and call them for some extra help.
“Huh.” You glanced over at the boys with a rather intrigued expression as the possibility of another case for you to dig a little bit deeper into to see if it might be a hunt. “I don’t know about you, but I’d say that’s definitely our kind of weird.”
+ + +
You and the boys packed up your things and made the drive up to South Dakota to visit the sheriff. You figured it wouldn't hurt to keep yourselves busy while Kevin worked himself to the bone with the tablet. All of you decided to meet at the latest crime scene and go from there while you caught up on details. You were happy to be out of the bunker and moving around. You hoped going back on another hunt might give you a second wind. There was nothing better than a couple of missing people to get the adrenaline pumping. You just wished you knew what was making you so damn tired. You bit back another yawn when the Impala pulled into the parking lot of some diner.
You were the last one to get out when Dean parked the car next to the sheriff’s truck, still moving a bit slower than you intended. The boys greeted Jody with wide smiles and tight hugs after seeing her again. You slammed the backseat door shut and smoothed out your outfit before approaching the woman, giving her a friendly smile. However it seemed she wasn’t expecting to see you. Your smile faltered slightly at the confused and startled expression that crossed her face. It seemed the boys failed to mention about your resurrection from the dead when they called to see how she was after everything that went down earlier this year with her blind date with the King of Hell.
“What’s wrong, Jody? You look like you’ve seen a ghost.” Dean joked with the woman, finding her reaction at seeing someone who thought was dead was rather funny. She turned her head to look over at the man, demanding an explanation. “Yeah. We felt the same way when I saw her again. It’s a long, messy story.”
“I’m
a ghost. Or a zombie.” You reassured the woman before she could try and process how you were somehow alive. “It really is a messy story. Short version of it all: not really dead, just lost my memory and thought I was someone else for two years.”
“It never is easy with you boys, huh?” Jody felt the need to ask. You could hear the humor in her voice at the trouble that seemed to follow them. “Anyway, it’s nice to see you again, Y/N. Glad you’re not dead.”
“Me too.” You agreed with the woman, smiling at how her personality peeked through her words. From what you remembered about the woman all those years ago when Bobby was still alive, you liked her. And the things the boys mentioned about her during the drive here made you think she was going to be a good friend to have on your side. “Luckily, I’m back and ready to hunt down whatever is kidnapping these people.”
“That’s the spirit. So, car was right over there, ass over teakettle.” Jody gestured over to the other side of the parking lot where the abduction took place, all that remained was the broken glass from the car that was currently being swept up by a maintenance worker. “Now, normally, if somebody would tell me that one guy lifted an S.U.V, I’d tell him to take a flying leap, but after what I’ve seen and now heard…”
“Nothing’s impossible.” You said. You opened up the case file to one of the missing people and skimmed through the information, wondering if there might be something important here to make note of while the boys went through the others. "How does this match up with other missing people?”
“Well, four abductions, strong evidence left at every scene—literally.” Jody said.
“So, the first vic was a pastor?” Sam asked, wondering if there was another more solid connection to the rest of the victims.
“Yeah. Door of his study was punched in. And the next two—an engaged couple.” Jody explained the case in better detail. You looked down at the case file Dean laid open on the trunk of the Impala and the black and white photograph attached. All of the victims appeared to be the small town folk who were innocent at first glance. Someone went out of their way to snatch them up.
“Locked bedroom window was ripped open.” Dean noted the similarly strange and destructive pattern between each kidnapping.
‘And then we have our waitress here with the topsy-turvy ride.” Jody added.
“Any other connection among them?” Sam wondered.
“Yeah. They were all members of Good Faith church here.” Jody said. You narrowed your eyes slightly while you thought of the possibility of what might be might be to blame for this if there was a religious connection to all of this. You and the boys dealt with something like this a little similar earlier in the year. “My church group back in Sioux Falls was in a tizzy over it.”
Dean hummed his response at hearing the sheriff and her new found spiritual faith. You tossed him a dirty look at his reaction to the woman’s faith to God. She had every right to believe in whatever she wanted, even if you didn’t feel the same way. Jody seemed to have picked up on the same feelings you had when she asked him what that was all about. “I didn’t peg you for churchy.”
“Yeah. You know…choking on the ladies’ room floor ‘cause of witchcraft kind of makes a higher power seem relevant.” Jody gave the man a truthful response to her sudden urge to join a church. You offered a weak smile when you saw her eyes direct over to you. “And seeing someone you were told was dead doesn’t help, either.”
“Jody, are you sure you’re ready to jump back into the fray?” Dean asked the woman in a concerned tone of voice, knowing all the things she witnessed last year and the passing of Bobby didn’t help the woman. But it seemed he underestimated her.
“This wackadoo stuff keeps coming. More I know, better armed I’ll be.” Jody gave an honest response to the man’s question. She was a sheriff, after all. If she wanted to protect her town from creatures that went bump in the night, she was going to have some practice in order to do that. You had a feeling from what Jody witnessed over the years, it was going to take a lot to scare the woman to the core.
“Okay, so, we have missing church folk and super strength.” Sam summarized what all of you knew at the moment so far about the case. He decided to take a shot in the dark, figuring it wouldn’t hurt to throw his theory out there. “Maybe angels harvesting vessels? Could be a Buddy Boyle type thing.”
“Wh—angels?” Jody repeated the creature the younger Winchester spoke out in the open like it was nothing. She looked at all of you with disbelief at how casual you were being. “You’re joking.”
“Don’t get your pants on fire.” Dean said, stopping the woman from becoming thrilled at hearing about creatures she thought only existed in the bible. “They suck.”
“You said there was a witness.” Sam said, circling back to what Jody mentioned earlier.
“Yeah, well…” Jody shrugged at the person who was waiting for you to talk to them. She didn’t seem too set on the idea they were going to be any help to you. “More or less.”
You and the boys decided to get a booth inside the restaurant while Jody rounded up the witness so you could speak to them. You sipped the coffee you ordered out of politeness and patiently waited. A few minutes later Jody arrived with your witness, a homeless man who most likely camped out near the place from the looks of him. You offered a friendly smile when the man's eyes scanned across the table to see what this was all about. Jody pulled up a chair while she ushered the man to take the seat in the booth next to you when you slid over to be close to the window. He set his coffee cup down to the table, seeming comfortable enough to give his side of the story.
“Okay, Slim.” Jody said. “My friends here want to talk to you about the missing girl.”
“Honor. Her name was Honor.” The man started off by giving the missing girl’s name, indicating that he knew her on some personal level. And it seemed he remembered her from the kind behavior given to someone like him. “Nice girl. Always left me meatloafs.”
“Slim, why don’t you tell us what you saw that night?’ Sam asked the man, hoping to get to the reason why he was here in the first place.
“I heard a big noise, got woke, and there’s somebody over there lifting a car up—like this.” Slim demonstrated what he witnessed last night, lifting up his arms the way he saw the stranger did to the car, as if the several ton machine weighed nothing.
“And did you happen to see who it was?” You asked him another question.
“I was too far. But I saw a light go off.” Slim made sure to add a small detail he thought was important enough to mention. Sam guessed it was a white light, “Blue. Blue like fire. But not. Then she was—she wasn’t there.”
“Could you think of anything else?” Dean hoped for a little bit more from the man, but Slim shook his head before he looked down to his cup of coffee. He was helpful enough for you and the boys at figuring out what you might be tracking. Dean pulled out a small wad of cash from his pocket and handed over a twenty dollar bill to Slim, hoping to give him a hot meal for his help. “Well Slim, thank you for your time.”
Slim happily pocketed the money and went on his way with the cup of coffee he came over with. You let out a quiet sigh from trying to figure out the proper direction you should be going to figure all of this out. While you didn’t have much at the moment, Slim’s description of the kidnapping might have been something for you and the boys to go off on.
“Okay. So, no white light. No angel.” Sam said, feeling confident enough to cross the creature off the list at the endless other monsters to blame.
“Has anybody talked to the victims’ families?’ Dean asked the sheriff.
“It’s next on my list.” Jody answered.
“Okay, and you said that they were all part of the same church?” Dean’s question was replied with a nod of the head from Jody. This connection, strong or weak as it might be, was the only one you had going for you as a possible hunting ground of where this monster was picking their victims. It was better than anything. Your lips stretched into a frown when Dean looked over at you. “Ready to get your worship on?”
+ + +
You and the boys decided to change out your clothes meant for posing as federal agents in favor of something more casual. The church all four of your victims seemed the usual run of the mill place of worship. You pretended to play along as the new people in town interested in joining to get a better understanding of how things worked. The woman who helped give you a tour of the place was a little too friendly and squeaky clean for your liking. She smiled in delight when you and Dean introduced yourselves as a happy couple "engaged to be engaged" with his little brother tagging along.
You roamed around the church hand in hand with Dean while Bonnie, your overly peppy tour guide, told you all the things Good Faith church offered to its members and the public. Usual things like Sunday school and charities for the homeless. You decided to have a little fun and play into the whole loving couple when Bonnie mentioned the church was perfect for weddings as well. You smiled at her when she occasionally turned to see you and Dean whispering to each other, acting like a couple of crazy kids in love with a religious ceremony in mind. It wasn't that far off from the truth. You did love Dean, and while you wanted to marry him someday, a church would be the last place you'd choose to do it.
After the tour was complete, the four of you made your way to Bonnie's office where she took a seat at her desk before gesturing for the rest of you to follow with the few chairs she had available. Sam missed out when his brother swiftly snatched the chair next to yours, causing Dean to smirk in victory while the younger man awkwardly looked around to find another seat and pulled it up next to the desk.
"We hope you enjoyed the tour." Bonnie said, the smile she greeted you with felt as if it never left her face. It was starting to make your cheeks hurt at the welcoming disposition she carried on. "Any questions before we get you all registered?"
"Yeah. Uh, look," You pretended to be apprehensive from the subject you were about to approach after she had been so kind to you. "Ms. Futchko—"
"Oh, please, dear." Bonnie quietly laughed at the formalities and corrected to you something more casual, wanting to treat this situation like you were among friends. "Bonnie will do just fine."
"We love the church. We do." You cushioned the strange questions you were about to ask her, deciding to pretend and act as if you were a concerned citizen wondering what you might be getting yourself into. "But...well, we've heard that a few members have gone missing. And while my boyfriend likes to think he's Superman," You flashed a quick smile as you reached out to squeeze Dean's hand before letting it rest there to continue milking the little performance on sharing your fake concerns. "We’ve been talking in private about it. And to be honest…that kind of scares us.”
"Let me assure you, with our increased security, Good Faith has never been safer." Bonnie told you, placing a hand to her chest to try and give all of you a better peace of mind. It seemed she was worried about her fellow churchgoer, just in the way a little too religious person thought was the best form of action. Leaving it up all to the chance God would intervene and save the day. "And those people who have gone missing, well, they are front and center in our prayers."
"What a relief." Dean let out a breath at the reassuring sounding news, making Bonnie's smile return after it disappeared shortly from the change in conversation. "Now, you must have been close to them."
"Well, we do share the A.P.U. bond." Bonnie. Dean pretended to be intrigued at hearing such a thing when he asked more about it. "Our chastity group. ‘Abstinence Purifies Us.’”
You pretended to turn your head to another direction when you scratched your nose, the easiest way to sneak an eye roll of frustration at hearing the new connection to the victims. Out of anything, you should’ve seen the virginity angle coming from where you were.
"Wow." Sam laughed and smiled, faking interest about such a group. "You mind if we sit in on that, maybe see if it's for us?"
“I’m afraid it’s members only. I'm sorry, but it can get pretty personal." Bonnie apologized for the inconvenience after offering so many things for you to join, but it seemed this one was off limits for obvious reasons. You, never being the one to miss an opportunity, jumped to it before either one of the boys could back out.
“Then count us in.” You said, lightly smacking your thigh as you grinned.
"Well, I'll be a squirrel in a skirt." Bonnie softly laughed in delight at hearing your eager enthusiasm to join a group, intidicating to her that the three of you were good Christians. You mirrored her behavior as you smiled over at Dean when he squeezed your hand a little too roughly, wondering what the hell you got yourselves into. "I'll be back in a jiff with the papers."
Bonnie wasted no time jumping up from her seat and heading to another room across the way, allowing you to watch what she was doing. She opened up a filing cabinet and shuffled around some papers to find what she was looking for. Your attention fell back to Dean when you felt him softly smack your arm.
“A chastity group?” Dean asked you, wondering if this was really how you wanted to spend your afternoon. And why you needed to drag him into your plan. You knew he would love to do anything else than listen to a bunch of horny virgins go on about temptations and sins brought on by the world.
"It's not a bad idea." Sam seemed to have agreed with your plan of action, figuring out the same possible pattern you had. If you knew who was in the group, you might have a better chance at saving others from going missing. "If all the members were in A.P.U., then maybe whatever took them is stalking virgins."
"And that Slim guy said he thought he saw fire." Dean added another little detail that went together with the virginity part. Something you've dealt with before. "So, what are you guys thinking, dragons?"
You never got the chance to finish the conversation when you saw Bonnie return back with the forms in hand. You cleared your throat and went back to acting casual as if that’s what you had been doing the entire time she was gone during the short period of time. You forced yourself to smile again when she handed you over a clipboard with a piece of paper attached.
"You can just sign here, and your purification can begin." Bonnie instructed you, letting you glance down at the piece of paper. You read the title of the paper and slowly your expression fell as to what you were about to promise. Something you lost several years ago. You bit your bottom lip when Sam mentioned the pledge, only to be taken by someone who had never had intercourse before. "It's a commitment to your virginity."
"I don't think we can really un-ring that bell." Dean thought he was funny with the innocent sounding joke, deciding to humor himself. Bonnie, however, stared at the man with a blank expression. It hadn't dawned on her just yet why you couldn't sign right away. "You know what I mean?"
A moment of silence fell across the room as Dean's smile faded away when Bonnie continued to stare at the man with eyes too wide for his personal comfort. Slowly, the wheels in her head started turning, making her realize the sins you've committed. "Oh. I see." Bonnie's gaze quickly darted away from you and Dean specifically, as if she was trying to hide her disappointment. However, like the good Chrisitan that she was, the woman offered you a chance at redemption. "Well...if you just ask for God's forgiveness for your sins and make a new vow of chastity, well, then you'll be born again as a virgin in His eyes."
"So, you just hit the 'virginity do-over' button, and all is good with the man upstairs?" Dean's question meant to come off as sincere and curious, but he had a way of coming off a little igorent at times. Sometimes he didn't understand the kind of people he was dealing with and how to adapt.
"It's not a button." Bonnie corrected the man. Her tone of voice fell into a softer, and yet slightly colder one as she defended her personal views in a way to make him better understand. "And...this isn't just a piece of paper. I mean, this is your clean slate, your chance to be a virgin until marriage. Isn't that something you want? To be pure for each other until your wedding night, the way God intended?”
You raised your brow slightly from the way Bonnie tried to guilt trip you for doing something thought of as a sin. Premarital sex was the least horrible thing someone could do. However, just to get yourself into this damn group, you decided to pretend and feel remorseful for a second. You looked over to Dean, the both of you nodding your head and shared matching smiles. "Well, you had me at 'clean slate.' Right, sweetheart?" Dean asked you, clicking his pen to be the first one to sign. "Let's do this."
You and the boys signed your names on the pledge and handed over the clipboards back to Bonnie's awaiting hands. She glanced down at the names you scribbled down and smiled in delight. "Congratulations Sam and Dean Winchester, and Y/N Y/L/N. You are all virgins."
You found yourself letting out a quiet laugh at hearing something you hadn't heard in a while. Sam faked his enthusiasm while Dean took it a smidge too far, grinning a little too wide and seeming excited at the news. At least making a show out of it for Bonnie. You knew one thing for certain: this was going to be one interesting afternoon.

Hello, the prompt are open again, yeeeaah! First things first: thank you so much for running this blog and for all the work you invest in this, it's really appreciated! Okay, so the prompt: Snow white au? You can make any changes you like, but really Sirius just screams to be Snow White (ebony hair, pale skin etc.) Thank you!
"Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the fairest of them all?" the Queen asked. She looked forward to this every time she asked, sure in the knowledge that her enchanted mirror would show her reflection.
Only instead of answering, "You, My Queen," as it always had in the past, it said, "The prince of this kingdom, Sirius." The surface of the mirror rippled, then showed a vision of her husband's son.
Anger roiled in her like a forest fire-- sudden and all-consuming. "What?"
It shimmered away to be a reflection, but it didn't change the answer she had been given. "He is the fairest in the kingdom, as you asked."
She grit her teeth together, her reflection animalistic. "Not for long."
*
Sirius had run away from his tutor. His maid told him that it was rude, but he had run away from her plenty of times too. His father asked him not to, but his mother always smiled indulgently and said he could do whatever he desired.
It's not as though he was trying to be horrid. In fact, the idea of making any of them mad was the opposite of what he wished, but he wanted to find his own happiness. He would not find happiness-- or even contentment-- locked away in a room in the castle, practicing his letters.
Usually, he ran to the gardens. Today, he went to the forest outside the castle.
He didn't have designs to see the world, but he would quite like to see lands outside the castle walls. He'd only ever seen the forest from atop a tower, and it was certainly more fun to be down among the trees than looking at them from afar.
Sirius spent his time today chasing a rabbit. A useless endeavor, he was well aware, but it was fun to run through the forest with abandon. Unfortunately, he was chasing after it with such single-minded focus that he ran flat into another person as they rounded a tree, knocking both of them to the ground.
"Sorry," Sirius said, scrambling to his feet. He held out a hand to the other man, who took it to ease his way up. "I wasn't looking where I was going."
"I can feel that quite evidently," he said with a laugh. He smiled at Sirius, bright and open.
"Did I hurt you?"
"Not at all," he said, shaking his head. He was looking at Sirius like he couldn't even think of pulling his gaze away. After a delayed moment, he let go of Sirius's hand. "My apologies," he said. "I am Prince James of the Potter kingdom, five leagues from here."
"I'm Prince Sirius of the White Kingdom. Hopefully not a single league from here, otherwise I'm horribly lost."
"Oh, you're Prince Sirius," James said, eyes going round.
"Erm, yes. Why? Not what you expected?"
"No, you're- you're exactly as people say."
Sirius frowned. That wasn’t an answer that made much sense. "What do people say?"
"That you're the most beautiful person they've ever seen," he replied. A light blush crawled up his cheeks, but he didn't look away in embarrassment.
"I thought the only person that said that was my mother," Sirius said honestly.
"Trust me when I say she is far from the only one. Your looks border on legendary these days."
"Great," Sirius said wryly. "I'll just write songs about my beauty, shall I?"
"Of course not. Someone else has already written them."
"Please tell me you're joking."
James shook his head, still smiling at Sirius.
*
"-and then you hold it like this," James said, helping Sirius position his hands properly along the instrument. He'd brought it along with him at Sirius's insistence the last time they'd seen each other in the woods.
"How do you know all this? We're both princes, and yet you seem to know so much more than I do."
James shrugged. "I’m sure it’s isolated to hands-on activities, such as this. God knows you go through more books than I ever will."
"I read books because they never wish for me to leave the castle." He tentatively plucked at one of the strings.
*
"Here," James said, proudly presenting Sirius with a bouquet. There were plenty of flowers in the forest, but these weren't native to either of their kingdoms. Sprigs of white fluff framed large red blossoms that were more beautiful than any rose he'd seen.
Sirius felt heat rise in his face as he accepted them. He hated that his skin was so light; his blush was surely visible to James. "Thank you." He brought them up to his nose and inhaled deeply. They were sweet, and so delightful that he wanted to bury his nose in them and never come back out. "These are wonderful. I take it they're from the greenhouse you were telling me about?"
“Indeed,” James said, then he started to explain what they were called and where they were from.
Sirius listened, entranced with the cadence of his voice and the passion with which he spoke.
*
Sirius put a hand on the back of James's neck and kissed him. He was horribly nervous; he'd never kissed anyone before. But he fancied James, and they'd been meeting in the forest in secret for almost a year now.
There was a small pause as James froze in surprise, but then he tilted his head and wrapped an arm around Sirius, kissing him back.
*
"Since we're going to be married," Sirius said, "I should be able to visit you soon. Properly."
James smiled, carefully pulling a strand of Sirius's hair out from where he'd tied it back. He rolled it around his finger, gently unwound it so he didn’t tug on his scalp, then tucked it behind Sirius's ear. The long wave of it curved against the hinge of his jaw then fell further, stopping along his chest. "Tired of our forest jaunts, then?"
"Let's just say that I look forward to being in a room with you. Besides," he added a second later, "you've only ever seen me dressed down like this. I always get sweaty walking out here."
James's expression warmed. "As much as I look forward to that too, You know I don't care, right? I'm here for you, not how pretty you can look."
"It doesn't hurt, does it?" Sirius teased, leaning towards him.
"Of course not; I simply wanted to remind you that, even though you're the most beautiful person in the world, I would love you if you weren't."
"Duly noted, My Prince," Sirius said, giving him a quick kiss.
*
"I have a job for you," the Queen said, folding her hands in front of herself.
The hunter-- a generously innocuous title, considering the type of jobs he did-- ticked an eyebrow up. "Never worked for the royal family before."
"And as far as your friends are concerned, you still haven't. You are being paid for your discretion, as well as the job."
"I'm listening," he said.
"Prince Sirius will be going into the forest exactly an hour after lunch. You are to follow him, kill him, and then bring me his heart."
"Damn, you must hate your son an awful lot to not just poison him."
"That thing is not my son," she hissed. Hate burning in her eyes, she took out a fat coin pouch and heaved it onto the table. She pulled the tie off, and gold spilled across the dark wood. "Do we have a deal or not?"
Fenrir's eyes trained on the gold as soon as it became visible, and his gaze was still on it when he said, "Yes. Do I want to know what you're going to do with his heart?” Word was that the Queen was a witch, and the thought of her eating it was unappetizing, to say the least. “Wouldn't a ring or summat be plenty of identification of a job completed?"
"That's none of your concern," the Queen said imperiously. "I expect delivery tonight." Then she swept out of the room.
Fenrir rolled his eyes. Sodding royals. This is why he'd never worked for them before. But the pay was good-- more than he'd ever seen in one place-- and after tonight, he wouldn't have to see her again, and he was sure she was looking forward to that as much as he was.
The time she mentioned came around, and Fenrir was already in place. The prince walked into the forest, though he didn't look much like a prince at the moment. No jewelry adorned him, and while his clothes were made of expensive fabric, they were made for traveling through the woods, and he had a bag with him that had already seen plenty of use.
Something about this wasn't right. What reason would the Queen have for wanting to be rid of him? She'd called him a 'thing', but he didn't look monstrous to Fenrir-- and the hunter had seen monstrous. When he stepped out in front of his path, the prince startled, then smiled. "Hello there," the prince said.
Fenrir wasn't used to being greeted in a friendly manner. He didn't have the face for it. The prince didn't look at him like he was scary, though. The hunter wished he was scared. It would make this easier. "Hello," Fenrir replied automatically.
"Were you leaving or going further?" the prince asked innocently. It was absurd the way that none of the stories about the prince's beauty had been exaggerated. He was like a sculpture of ivory, expertly carved, and when he smiled, the hunter could swear that the sun shone brighter.
"Going further."
"Would you like to walk together?" he offered. "The journey gets boring on my own."
"Sure," Fenrir said, more of a grunt than a word.
All the prince did was smile again and say, "Great!" like he was truly happy for the hunter's company.
Fenrir let them get far enough into the forest that if the prince screamed or tried to run, there would be no one nearby. Then he grabbed his arm and stopped walking. "I admit, I'm here on business."
Even with the hunter holding onto him, the prince didn't look like he suspected a thing. "What kind of business? I don't think there are bears, or any of your usual fare in these woods."
"The Queen hired me. She wants you gone."
"She..." he trailed off, happy air crumpling. "Me? I'm your business today?"
The hunter nodded, jaw clenched. "You seem a decent sort," he said apologetically. "Maybe you should close your eyes, so it's easier for you."
"No, I-" he tugged ineffectually, trying to free his arm as tears filled his eyes "-I can't. James would be heart-broken. We're supposed to marry."
Fenrir had thought that news of the prince being betrothed would've reached his ears.
"Please," the prince pleaded, looking up at the hunter with large eyes. He stopped trying to free himself for the moment. "I'll leave. I won't return. You can tell my mother that you killed me as she asked, and she will never see me again."
Fenrir thought he had long since lost his sympathy. He wouldn't have made it this far with it intact.
He let his hand drop to the side, and he jerked his head towards the path they had been on. "If you return, I'll have to kill you."
"I won't," the prince said immediately. He wiped at his face. He knew that he should run until his lungs felt like they were going to burst, but with frantic hands, he reached into his bag and pulled out the knife. He'd never used it before, but James had said it wasn't safe for him to travel without it, so he'd carried it. He picked up a handful of hair and started hacking it away. He was too recognizable with his hair this long; he'd never seen someone walking the street with long hair, only nobles.
By the time he finished, there was a circle of thick, black hair around his feet, and the hunter hadn't moved-- he just stood there, watching him.
"Thank you for your kindness, sir." He left. Not running, but making a quick pace. He felt the hunter's eyes on him until he disappeared.
Fenrir didn't know what to think of him. The prince had cut off his hair-- beautiful, long locks of ebony-- as if it was nothing. No, he corrected a second later, not nothing. He'd cut it off because in the choice of life or death, he'd chosen life however he could get it. The kid had called him sir. The hunter sighed and turned to track down a deer. The hearts were similar enough that the Queen wouldn't be able to tell the difference, especially if he mussed it up a little.
*
Sirius threw himself into James's arms, crying.
James had no idea what was wrong, but he still hugged him and assured him that everything would turn out alright.
After Sirius explained, James said, "It’s alright. We'll get married so you can change your name, and you can stay with us. Your mother will never know where you are. No formal declarations were made, so no one will know."
Sirius gave a small nod. He'd wanted to move to live with James anyways, so this wasn't bad. They'd already decided to get married, so this wasn't a horrible outcome. It was a good one, in fact. It was the one he wanted. He knew that at the end of it, everything would be okay.
It was just hard to see it right now.
James brushed some of his tears away with soft fingers and pressed a kiss to his forehead. "She won't hurt you, I swear it."
"I thought she cared about me," Sirius choked out. She was the only one in the castle that had supported everything he wanted to do. Had it all been a lie? Or had she found her hatred of him recently? Perhaps it didn't matter. No matter how she felt about him or when it had started, he wouldn't see her again.
*
"Are you going to leave the castle at all while you're here?" James asked, leaning against the doorframe. "I thought you wanted to spread your wings a little."
Sirius combed his fingers through his hair self consciously. "I didn't know if it would be safe."
"I'd be happy to come with you," James offered. There was a genuine smile on his face, though Sirius had never seen him with any other kind.
"You're busy," Sirius hedged, even though he wanted to take James up on it in a flat second.
"I'm never too busy for you, my love. Come on," he said, holding out a hand. "It's a sunny day, and you will only make it brighter."
Sirius didn't hesitate to take his hand.

Author’s Note: Merry Christmas, everyone! Here’s a little gift from me to you 😌 I hope you like it! Let me know what you think in the comments below.
8 years later
Winter in DC was too cold. It had reached that time of year when the roads turned icy at the slightest humidity in the air, and it had already snowed at least twice since December began. Thankfully, the snow didn’t stick around very long; FBI agents were on-call 24/7. A double-edged sword, really. On one hand, it meant work was a great way to avoid problems. It was easier to forget. On the other hand, well, it was work.
“Six years in this city and it’s still so fucking cold,” Erin muttered to herself, shivering as her car warmed up. She buried her face into the scarf wrapped around her neck, trying to warm up. The warmth from the heated steering wheel seeped into her fingers, soothing the ache in her joints. She was supposed to meet Sachi at the bar for drinks. It had become a regular event in her weekly life; one night a week to go out and relax.
Some would’ve said that her promotion meant she could take more time off. That she could delegate a little more and take on a lighter workload as a result. But as a supervisor for the Operational Technologies branch, she had all the more reason to work more. Well, that’s what she convinced herself, at least.
Her friend and coworker, Sachi, was already seated at a table by the time she arrived. The bar was pretty busy, busier than the week before. It made sense; the holidays were always a time for friends and family to catch up on each other’s lives.
“Hi! Sorry I’m late, a meeting went overtime and I ran into some traffic on the way here,” Erin apologized, draping her wool coat over the back of her seat and sitting down. The next article to be shed was her scarf, which she kept piled on her lap. “Were you waiting long?”
“No, no worries,” her friend answered, shrugging. “I just got this table a couple minutes ago. Happy hour seems extra popular this week. How was the meeting?”
She rolled her eyes. “The usual; operations found some bugs in the new software and had some suggestions, so half of the developers will be working on that while the rest continue building our newest tool. How did your day go?”
“It was so slow, I don’t know which politician decided to choose yesterday to fuck up, but there were files everywhere,” Sachi groaned, rubbing her forehead tiredly. Her eyes landed on the sparkling gem on Erin’s hand. “I do have a question for you, though: why do you wear that ring?”
She raised a dark brow, then followed her line of sight to her hand. “Oh, this? It’s….it’s just something to keep the men away, that’s all. You know how they are.”
A curious head tilt. “I do, but are you sure that’s what you want? You deserve to find someone who makes you happy, Rin.”
Erin gave her a tight-lipped smile, twisting the metal band around her finger. It was a recent purchase; a gift to herself. A promise. A promise to remember. Even if he wasn’t hers to remember, at the end of the day.
“Is this still about that Marcus Pike guy?” Sachi asked, her voice softening as Erin avoided looking up. She reached across the table and covered her hand with hers. The glittering band of her own wedding ring seemed to mock her. “It’s been seven years since he went missing, Rin. You searched for him yourself; he’s gone.”
The news had broken just before Erin arrived in DC. Marcus Pike had gone missing, and there seemed to be no trace of him. His last known address was empty, his file had been wiped from all government databases, even his social media accounts were nonexistent.
One of the first things she did after her promotion was asking for a search squad. His number was still in her phone, but the number was no longer receiving calls. Even his email seemed to be deactivated, but it had existed before. There should’ve been a digital trail. It didn’t matter to her that it had been months since he was last seen–he was her best friend, and she wasn’t going to give up on him that easily.
Juggling her work with the investigation took its toll on her. Sleep eluded her, so she upped her coffee intake and spent countless hours off the clock. As a result, exhaustion settled in mid-day. Her work grew sloppy, obvious problems going untended and creating delays in operations.
The head of the department shut down her search after a year. He had cited it being a “waste of resources.” Maybe it was, to them. For such a large bureau with so many applicants, there was bound to be a replacement for Agent Pike. But even so, no one could replace Marcus.
“I know,” she replied softly. “I know. I’m trying, it’s just...I’ve spent years working for the FBI, and every time I stop to check the time, it’s like months have passed. And you know how my last relationship ended.”
She had been seeing a guy working for a tech startup, and at first it was great. The late nights and morning texts had been enough. But as time went on, and she became more immersed in her work following the election, her boyfriend grew restless. He wanted his girlfriend at home with him, preparing dinner and asking him about his day at the startup. Then he started the accusations. He accused her of cheating, of rubbing her success in his face.
Everything he said was false, but she had given up on trying to convince him. So she gave him a choice. He could leave if he wanted to, and there would be no hard feelings, just incompatibility. Or, he could stay, and she’d try to make more time for him. He chose the former.
“Oh come on,” Sachi reasoned, tapping the back of her hand. “You’re beautiful, smart, can kick ass. There has to be someone who’s into that.”
“Maybe,” Erin shrugged. Once upon a time, she had hoped she would meet someone like that. And in a way, she had. But at the end of the day, she was a coward. She was a coward, and she paid the price for it.
They always said that time was money. In her case, the price she paid was high.
Sachi’s eyes lit up. “You know what? Why don’t you come to a holiday party I’m hosting? Maybe you’ll meet someone there.”
“Who’s going?”
“Some of our coworkers, some of my friends, and their friends, potentially,” she listed off, waving off her concern. “Nothing very special, in my opinion.”
A party would be nice. If not for the company, then for the food; and if not the food, then the drinks. Yes, the drinks. Drinks were good.
Erin conceded with a nervous grin. “Alright, but no meddling!”
“Yay!” she squealed. Then, her expression turned serious again. She pointed at the ring. “But whatever you do, don’t wear that.”
---
Sachi’s house looked like it was out of a movie. Tall and sparkling with lights, her home was the textbook picture of a family Christmas. There was even a wreath on the front door and a wooden sign with drawn-on snowflakes that welcomed the party guests.
The foyer was lined with emerald garlands and shimmering fairy lights, leading her further in towards the kitchen. From giant gold ornaments to wooden figurines, it seemed as if she had thought of everything.
When she reached the kitchen, there were already some guests gathered around the kitchen island. Platters of sweets and charcuterie boards were spread over the marble countertop, glistening in the soft light. The guests grazed from small plates as they greeted each other and raved about how great it was to finally catch up.
Perhaps she’d host her own holiday party someday. When she had the space, of course. The apartment that she’d chosen wasn’t the best for groups, and she wanted enough surface area for decorations. Her string of lights and small tree at home paled in comparison to the giant tree in Sachi’s living room.
The invite had specified a semi-formal dress code, so she chose a black off-the-shoulder dress that reached her knees. She paired it with some black heels and a white blazer draped over her shoulders for warmth. It wasn’t much, but it would do.
“Erin!” Sachi squealed, coming over to give her a hug. “I’m so glad you’re here. You’re right on time. Everyone else should be arriving soon.” She shooed her away. “Go have fun! And if you need a wingwoman, I’ve got your back.”
Erin shivered as Sachi swept off her jacket, the cool air brushing against her shoulders. Nevertheless, she smiled. “Thanks.”
“Of course!” she replied. The next thing she knew, a glass of champagne was tucked into her hand. “Now go!”
What Sachi had failed to tell her, though, was that she was going to be one of the only singles in the entire house.
Wherever she turned, she found couples congregated into circles where they could discuss...whatever couples discussed. Not wanting to barge in as a third, fifth, or seventh wheel, she stuck close to the perimeter of the room.
Thankfully, she found an acquaintance from work who had also come to the party alone.
“Waiting for someone?” Ashley asked, sipping from a half-empty glass of wine. She was one of the receptionists for the technologies department. They’d spoken a couple times, but never much more than professional talk.
Erin shook her head and finished her third glass of champagne. Maybe she’d try the moscato next, just to change things up a little. The whole point of attending the party was to relax, right? So, she was trying to relax. “Just trying to loosen up. It’s been a while since I’ve gone to a party.” A soft laugh. “I can see why people like bringing a friend along. It would help a lot.”
“Why didn’t you, then?” At the lack of response, she sighed. “Is work still taking up a lot of time? You know you can take more time off.”
Yes, she knew. She’d heard it nearly a thousand times already. She knew she could take time off just like she knew she could forget about her past and move on. Part of her wanted to change, to move on as if nothing had happened. But after years of the same routine, and the same decisions coming back to bite her, it was hard to change.
“I know,” Erin replied, pressing a hand against her forehead. It was hotter than normal–did Sachi turn up the heating? She silently cursed her genetics; she’d probably have a fever later that night. “But as you know, there’s always more work to do. I signed up for this, so I need to do my job.”
“That doesn’t mean you can’t rest,” she reasoned, nudging her arm. “Are you still leading the search for that guy? Marcus Pike? I remember you were pretty involved with that.”
Maybe it was the exhaustion, maybe it was the alcohol. She gripped the glass a bit tighter. Her voice was clipped as she said, “No, I’m not. The search squad was disbanded years ago. We spent a year searching for him and there was nothing. There was nothing.” She swayed as she stood up, but quickly regained her balance. “I’m gonna….get another drink. Is there anything you want me to bring?”
“No thanks,” Ashley replied. Watching as Erin stumbled, she asked, “Are you sure you want another drink? Maybe you should take a break first.”
She waved her off. “I’m fine, don’t worry. It’s just the shoes.”
Yeah, right.
Erin’s turn around the corner was much too sharp, and her sluggish mind barely seemed to register the fact that she collided with a broad chest. Strong arms came up around her, holding her in place so she didn’t fall over. They were warm. Before she could stop herself, she splayed her hands on their chest, brows furrowed. What did Sachi put in there?
Then, she looked up and met the person’s eyes. Dark brown ones, to be exact. With a depth and sparkle that she hadn’t seen since Austin. Softly, she said, “M-Marcus?”
The man’s lips parting in shock. As Erin’s slightly-blurred gaze drifted down to his mouth, she frowned. No, it couldn’t be her Marcus; her Marcus didn’t have facial hair, nor did he wear glasses. He was handsome, though–just as handsome. And he was strong–she felt safer in his arms than she had in years.
“H-how do you know my name?”
His voice was similar, too, though a bit raspier.
She blinked. Then, it dawned on her; it wasn’t a dream. She really was at a party, in a dress pressed up against a very good-looking man who looked vaguely like her late best friend. It felt as if she had jumped into the snow without clothes on. She blushed and flinched away from him–as if she needed to be even redder–and said, “Sorry, you just look a bit like an old friend of mine. His name was also Marcus.”
It was her, Marcus realized. He would have recognized her voice anywhere, and when she looked up at him with those dark, green-flecked eyes, his years in Texas came rushing back to him. Part of him didn’t want to believe it. What was she doing in DC? And what were the chances that they’d meet again, with his changed identity?
Even so, she was as beautiful as he remembered, her smooth black hair styled into shining waves and her full lips painted a muted pink. In their time as friends, he rarely saw Erin out of her work clothes; a side effect of working for the FBI. Seeing her in a dress, and up close, against his chest felt like a dream. A dream that had plagued his mind for nearly a decade.
At the same time, she looked different. There was an air of exhaustion that clung to her just as tightly as her authority. Her eyes didn’t have the same bright sparkle that she had on her first day. He wondered if her smile was the same, and if she still took her coffee with two sugars and a splash of cream. If she still collected houseplants as if they were pets. If she was still the Erin he remembered.
The tugging in his chest pulled him towards her, and the old whisper of Marcus Pike urged him to tell the truth. To drop to his knees and beg for forgiveness. To tell her that he was sorry for leaving her, for dismissing her concerns about Lisbon. For disappearing without a trace. But Marcus Moreno, his new identity, his new life, knew it wouldn’t be fair to her.
So he introduced himself. A wave of relief washed over him as Erin giggled softly and shook his hand, telling him her name.
He’d missed her laugh, and the way the corners of her eyes crinkled just slightly when she was happy. He missed everything. He missed her.
“So,” she began, swaying a little. Her last drink was finally kicking in. Her brows furrowed in concentration. “How do you know, uh, Sachi?”
The little furrow of her brows was still adorable; he knew it only showed when she was thinking really hard. He just hoped she would remember their interaction in the morning. She rarely drank enough to get drunk, not wanting to bother with her body’s violent reaction to alcohol. Or so she told him.
“I’m a friend of her husband,” he replied, touching her arm softly as she swayed again. “Do you…do you want to sit down for a bit? We can keep talking, I just want to make sure you don’t get hurt.”
Erin hummed softly and nodded. “Yes, but don’t worry, I can handle a little fall.”
“I don’t doubt you can, Miss FBI.” Realizing his mistake, he cringed. So much for trying to have a fresh start. He guided her over to the table and pulled out a chair for her, making sure she was comfortable before sitting down in the seat next to her.
She frowned. “How do you know I work for the FBI?”
A pause. Then, he answered, “I overheard Sachi talking about you. You two seem to be pretty close.”
Drumming her fingertips on the table, she answered, “I guess so, yeah. She was one of my first friends after I moved here six years ago.” Her eyes glazed over with a tinge of sadness. “Time seems to be flying by very fast these days.”
Marcus sighed softly. “Yeah.” He offered her a smile that made her heart flutter. Or maybe that was just her stomach? “I guess it’s up to us to make the most out of it, right?”
She nodded. Propping her head up against her hand, she replied, “Definitely. So, tell me about yourself, Marcus Moreno. I think you mentioned a daughter?”
He couldn’t help but smile at the mention of Missy. If there was anything he didn’t regret in the past few years, it was meeting his late wife and raising his baby. But the story of his wife could come later; for now, he wanted to tell his best friend about his little girl.

Dazed and Confused
Description: Almost a month has past since Bucky and the reader met. Since then, they've had absolutely no contact or communication. What happens when someone decides to make the first move? More importantly: is this a date?
Pairings: Bucky Barnes x fem!enhanced! reader
(Reader can see shards of the future, understand all languages, and process information abnormally fast)
Warnings: Strong language, mostly fluff, mild angst, two idiots who could really benefit from a lesson in basic communication skills
Author's note: As per usual, the reader is unnamed, but when I'm writing, I refer to her as Violet. Also, Bucky Barnes is a poor lost puppy, and you can pry him from my cold, dead fingers before I'll let you hurt him.
*************************************************
The text comes when he’s ankle-deep in various pipes and tools (he could call the building’s super to fix the plumbing but with this great new thing called the internet, he figured it would be pretty simple to figure out why every time he takes a shower, the bathroom sink fills with sludge), and his hands are so full, he can’t check it. Besides, Bucky reasons with himself, it’s probably nothing. Nobody texts him unless it’s a wrong number or a telemarketer. In fact, at this point, he’s not even sure why he has a phone.
It takes a full hour to put everything back together (the youtube tutorials he watched made it all seem much simpler than it is), this time sans dead rat in the elbow fitting (he’s trying not to think too hard about that), and by that time, he’s nearly forgotten about the text. It’s only when he checks the time that he sees the alert on his phone. With a tap, he opens his messages, and as he reads the name attached to the latest one, he nearly drops the phone. It’s her.
He hasn’t seen the woman who has visions in nearly a month. Never expected to hear from her again, if he’s being honest. But there it is: a message with her listed as the contact. It’s not very long; only four words, actually. “Hey. Are you busy?”
He quickly types, “Why?” but realizes just as he’s about to hit “send” that it’s probably not the best response, all things considered (especially since he really, really wants to see her again… despite his better judgment). Alright, he needs to concentrate. Possibly, “That depends. What’ve you got in mind?” No. That’s too suggestive. Too flirty. Although he is flirting… sort of… maybe… he hasn’t figured that out yet. Finally, he decides to go with a simple, “No.” There. No way that can be misconstrued or make her uncomfortable (which is the last thing he wants to do). Unless she takes into account that it took him an hour to reply. Dammit. How do you even go about talking to a pretty girl these days? Is there a YouTube video on that?
Two minutes tick by. Then five. Then fifteen. He’s almost decided she’s not going to respond when his phone chirps again. “Sorry. Got caught up grading a paper.” This time, he’s fast on the draw. “That’s fine.” But not fast enough, because before he can hit send, another message appears. “This may be weird, but would you want to meet up? It’s okay if not. I just don’t know many people, so…” So…? That’s it? Is he supposed to wait for her to finish the thought or come up with a witty reply? How the hell does he do this?
Finally he comes up with another simple response. “When?” Great. He’s a monosyllabic wonder. It’s been a long time, and he can’t prove it (you know, because everyone who could bear witness to it is either ancient or dead) but he’s fairly certain he used to be better at this whole “talking” thing.
Less than thirty seconds pass by before there’s another message. “Now.” Now? Now! Okay, yeah, that’s fine. The shower’s fixed, so maybe he can hose off and change clothes fast enough that it won’t cause much of a delay. But he also hasn’t shaved in… when was the last time he shaved? At least he did laundry two days ago, so he has something clean- another ding. “Or, you know, whenever.” followed by… a yellow smiling face with a bead of sweat. What does that mean? Why is the face yellow? Once again, a ding. “What I meant is, I have this afternoon free. If you do too, that would work fine. No pressure.” No, he’s free pretty much for the foreseeable future. He should probably say something back sooner rather than later.
“Where?” No, that’s too short. “Where would you like to meet?” There. Better. Maybe. When did people stop talking on phones and only… texting? You used to be able to tell where a person stood because you could hear their voice. Now it’s all guesswork. God, he’s old. Definitely too old to be possibly thinking about her like-
“Wherever is fine. We could do a coffee shop again, or my apartment. Whatever’s most convenient for you.” Ball’s in his court. Um… he’d really rather not be out in public. For now, he’s safe (at least as far as he can tell), but it’s always a gamble, him betting against himself that his simple disguises will work, he won’t be recognized. That leaves… oh boy.
“Your place, if that’s alright.” That’s forward. Maybe too forward. She offered, but maybe that was just being polite? More importantly, is this a date? No. Can’t be. Possibly. Oh my god, what’s wrong with him?!
“Sure.” the words are followed by a string of numbers and a street name. “Just give me half an hour to make the place presentable.” Another yellow, sweaty smile. He really needs to look up what that means.
“Alright. See you then.” He presses another button and the screen goes black. Thirty minutes. What can he do in thirty minutes? As he catches sight of his reflection in the mirror, he makes a decision. Start with getting the sewage off his face.
___________________________________________________________________________________
“What the hell is the matter with me?” She mutters it to herself as, for the fourth time in ten minutes, she chances her clothes. “This is NOT a date. Not a date.” Just two lost souls swimming in a fishbowl… she shakes her head. She needs to get a grip. Now. Because this is definitely not a date. Barnes might be many things, but at all interested in her THAT way is not one of them. How could he be? She’s… weird. And damaged. Not that he’s all there either, but the possibility of this being anything more than a potential friendship? Uh-uh. No way. She doesn’t need to see the future to know that much.
A knock on her front door makes her jump, immediately hating herself. Why is she nervous? There’s nothing strange about this. People meet up all the time to talk and eat… in one or the other’s apartment… after finding out they both have special abilities. Okay, all of this is pretty strange, especially since it’s her.
After taking one last glance in the mirror (and smoothing down her hair that’s sticking straight up, thanks to switching out her shirts so many times), she steps out of her bedroom and makes her way towards the door. Not a date, she mentally repeats to herself. No reason to be nervous. Not a date. Then why the hell is she shaking a little? She needs to get a grip. Now.
Taking a deep breath, she pulls the door open (as it so happens, just as the man on the other side raises his hand to knock again).
“Hey. You made it.” That sounded almost normal. Not like she’s quaking in her boots.
“I did.” He’s smiling, so she must not sound as awkward as she feels.
“Did you find the place okay?” Wow. She sounds like she’s reading from a script. A really boring script at that.
“Yeah. There’s this thing called GPS now, and…” He trails off. “You probably already know about that.” Great. Now they’re both fish out of water.
“I do. Super helpful.” It occurs to her that she’s just leaving him standing in the hallway, so she asks, “Would you like to come in?” Oh my god. Her brain. Where is it?
“Thanks.” He doesn’t make a move, and that’s when she realizes she’s still blocking the doorway. Dumb-ass. Trying not to seem awkward, she walks backwards, promptly running into her kitchen chair.
“Ouch.” Bucky winces, and she wishes the floor would open up and swallow her.
“Graceful as an elephant.” She murmurs it under her breath, but a snicker from the man behind her lets her know it’s been heard. Right. Super hearing.
“That should turn into a nice, purple bruise by tomorrow.”
“Oh, yeah?” She calls it over her shoulder. “Do you see the future by any chance?”
“Nah.” He shakes his head, grinning. He has a nice smile. No, she needs to stop thinking like that. Right now. “I’ve just had a lot of experience running into things.”
They’ve gone so far into the room that they’ve walked straight past the tiny kitchen into the living room. She wasn’t really intending to jump straight into, “Why don’t we sit on the couch, which happens to barely be big enough for two people”, but there’s no way to work, “Let’s retrace our steps into the kitchen” into conversation smoothly, so she takes a seat, scooting as far to one side as she can.
“I thought super soldiers were supposed to be agile.” Thank god, he’s sitting too.
“They are, but for around twenty-eight years before that, I was as clumsy as the next person.” Immediately, he freezes. “Not that you’re clumsy-” So maybe she’s not the only one out of practice in the fine art of making friends.
“No, you had it right. I am.” He still looks a little unsure so, ignoring the little voice in her head screaming, “Don’t do it! You’re coming on too strong!” she leans towards him. “Actually, that new bruise is the latest of at least five others I currently have, and I can’t remember how I got any of them.” Does that make her sound weird? But no, he seems to be rolling with it.
“Haven’t you ever heard of looking where you’re going?” She goes out on a limb, assuming he’s joking.
“I’ve heard of the concept, but I’m usually too busy looking ahead, so-”
“Fair point.”
There’s a lull in the conversation. It goes on so long, that she blurts out, “Are you allergic to anything?” just to fill the silence.
“Huh?” He frowns. “Don’t think so. Why?” There actually is a reason, but now that she thinks about it, how would he be allergic to anything? If her frantic googling is correct, whatever Captain America is hopped up on took care of all physical weaknesses, so it’s unlikely Barnes will suffer anaphilactic shock due to something in her kitchen.
“I cooked, and…” She trails off. “… never mind.”
“Oh.” Now she really wishes her “power” had something to do with disappearing. “Thanks, um-” he clears his throat. “-was I supposed to bring anything? I thought about flowers, but-” he scratches the back of his neck, and if she had to guess, she’d say he’s nervous too.
“No, just yourself.”
“Great, because that’s all I brought.” Splendid. Neither of them know how to hold a conversation.
Finally, she decides to just come out and say it:
“I’m not good at this sort of thing.” He looks mildly confused, so she explains, “Talking to people. That is, unless I’m teaching them.”
“I don’t think I am either.” She starts to ask, “You don’t think?” but reels it in. Apparently, her face must show what she’s thinking, because he continues. “This is the most of it I’ve done in a long time.”
It’s completely inappropriate, but she laughs.
“Same for me. Hiding out to avoid capture doesn’t really leave many opportunities to practice your social skills, does it?”
He chuckles.
“Not unless I’m doing it wrong.”
It may be a mistake, but she decides to make a suggestion.
“You know, I think I heard from someone that there’s this really great solution when two people are in a room together and are out of practice holding a conversation.”
“What’s that?” At least he doesn’t seem offended.
“Watching a movie.”
“Huh.” He nods. “That was the go-to when the cat’s got your tongue back in my day too.” Good, so it’s not a foreign concept. “I’m afraid I don’t know of any theaters around here though, or even what’s playing.”
“Not a problem.” As she says it, she powers up her laptop “Any preferences? They’ve got pretty much anything if you know where to look.”
He thinks for a minute, then asks, “Fantasia? Do you think they have that?” It’s an unexpected request; out of all things, the ex-soldier wants to see a Disney movie.
“I’m sure they do. Give me a second.” Luckily, it’s on the first service she tries.
As the opening credits play, she struggles not to laugh at how wide his eyes go.
“How did you-”
“It’s on Netflix.” Nothing. He doesn’t know what that is. “It’s a website. I just typed in what I wanted to find, and there it is.”
The only sound for a few minutes is the swelling music coming from the speakers, then finally, Bucky murmurs,
“I don’t think I’ve been using the internet to it’s full potential.”
___________________________________________________________________________________
“Really?” Somehow, over the course of the evening, they’ve stopped sitting stiffly next to each other and watching their words. Now she’s turned towards him, a plate balanced on her knees, both of them completely ignoring the movie playing in the background. “A rat in your pipes? Are you serious?”
He nods.
“Afraid so.”
“How the hell did it even get in there?”
“Beats me. I didn’t ask it.”
She’s got a great laugh, Bucky thinks to himself. It’s the kind of laugh that makes you want to give into the giggles too.
“That’s probably for the best. From the sound of things, it wasn’t in any condition to answer your questions.”
He’s about to shoot back a reply, but then he remembers.
“That reminds me-” Careful not to elbow her (this sofa is barely a sofa; he’s not complaining though, because now that the ice has been broken, it’s actually kind of nice being close to another person again), he digs his phone out of his pocket and pulls up her texts from earlier. “-what does this yellow face mean?”
She frowns and leans towards him (she smells like cinnamon, maybe cloves… it’s not weird that he’s noticed that, right?).
“Oh.” Again, that laugh, but quieter this time. “It basically means, ‘I’m second guessing what I just said and I hope it didn’t come off the wrong way.’” That makes sense, given the context, but he still has another question.
“But why is the face yellow?”
Her brow furrows slightly as she thinks.
“You know, I’m really not sure. That’s just how most emojis look.”
“Emojis?”
“May I?” She indicates his phone.
“Sure.”
With a brief tap to the screen, a full page of yellow faces (amongst other odd symbols) appears.
“These are emojis. They sort of add interest to a text.”
“Huh.” Taking back the offered phone, he studies the symbols. “That would’ve been useful to have when we sent telegrams.” As soon as he says it, he realizes how he sounds. “I just dated myself, didn’t I?”
She smirks.
“Just a little, but don’t worry. It’s charming.”
He places a smile on his face and laughs lightly, but on the inside, he’s still trying to figure out whether or not this is a date. Is she, against all odds, actually interested in him, or is she just being kind? Two hours later when the clock strikes nine, he’s still not sure.
“Well, I hate to kick you out, Bucky, but I have a student coming by tomorrow at seven a.m., so I need to get to bed.” Has he overstayed his welcome? But no, she doesn’t look offended.
“Sure. No problem.” He stands and, without thinking, offers her his hand to pull her up, which she takes. How long has it been since he’s touched another person, or another person has touched him, like that? A casual gesture that normal people with simple secrets share?
“Thanks for the meal, by the way.”
“Oh, no trouble.” She still hasn’t let go. “Did you want to take some leftovers with you?”
“No, that’s okay.” Yes, he really does want to (its much better than what he usually comes up with on his own) but if he had to venture a guess, she probably doesn’t have the funds to be giving away food willy-nilly.
“Alright.” She pulls her hand away, and immediately, he feels colder.
They walk single file towards the door (this apartment is too small for them both to pass through shoulder-to-shoulder), her right behind him. As he pulls open the door, he tells her,
“Thanks again for everything.”
She chuckles.
“Thank you for the conversation.”
He’s about to say something more (although he’s not sure what) when she wraps her arms around him in a hug. It takes a second for him to realize what’s happening, but then he returns the embrace.
It’s over far too quickly, and when she stands back, her cheeks are flushed.
“Be careful on your way home.”
“Will do. Have a good night.”
On the bus ride home, he plays over the events of the evening. He’s still uncertain as to whether or not it was a date. He feels like it was, but it’s been so long… time to consult the internet. As it turns out, there’s quite a few websites that offer opinions on the subject. He finds one that has a quiz attached and, calculating how much time it’ll take him to get home, decides to take it.
The questions are pretty generic, and he gets through them in under two minutes. Waiting for the result to load, however? He’s back in his apartment before he gets a solid answer on that. There’s a graph showing how they measure each factor, but the final result is stands at, “You’ve been on a date- likelihood, 99%.” Huh. First time in seventy years. Maybe he’ll give the whole “texting” thing another go.
___________________________________________________________________________________
Morning dawns far too early for her liking, and with it, her memories of last night return. It was going okay. Really it was. Until she hugged him, that is. Oh my god. Why couldn’t she show some common sense for once? Friends don’t hug goodbye, especially not, “I’m just getting to know you” friends. She’s never going to hear from him again because she came on too strong, and now he really doesn’t want to have the, “I’m not attracted to you” conversation.
As she makes a cup of tea, a scene plays out before her eyes. The phone dings with a text alert under the name “Barnes.” She doesn’t realize it’s a vision until that exact thing happens ten seconds later. “Wow. So helpful. Really.” She mutters to herself. It’s almost as useful as someone yelling “Duck!” just as you get hit in the head.
She really shouldn’t read the message. She has a job to do, a student to teach, and if she’s distracted during their lesson, she’ll feel terrible. But, another “ding” sounds and curiousity gets the better of her.
The first text is simple: “Good morning” followed by… she has to choke back a laugh… several various smiley faces. Guess he’s decided to give emojis a go. “Hope your class goes well today.” Shaking her head, she scrolls down to the next message. “Last night was fun. Would you want to do it again sometime?”
“Well, I’ll be damned.” She whispers as her fingertips make contact with the keyboard. Maybe he didn’t take it as her trying to make something happen between them that never will. Or maybe he’s just been away from normal human interraction for so long, he’s accepting whatever she throws at him simply so he’ll have a friend. Either way, she likes him and would like to know him better, and if that means swallowing down the silly crush that’s starting to develop, she can do that.
“Good morning. That sounds great.” She types back, then puts her phone on silent. Certain areas of her life may be changing, but for now- a knock sounds on her door- class is in session.

Day 5: Red string of Fate (Sasuhina Month 2019) - Part 2
@sasuhinamonth
Continuation from Part 1-
Eight months later
Ino and Sai request the pleasure of your company at their wedding on the…….
Hinata fidgeted in her seat, as the maid of honour, was glowering her way. She recognised the pink haired woman from three years ago. She remembered her name, an appropriate one considering the colour of her tresses, Sakura.
"Why the fuck is that woman giving us the stink eye?", Tenten noticed it too. At that moment, Hinata regretted agreeing to accompany Tenten as her plus one, when Neji my cousin and her recent boyfriend couldn't cancel a last minute work related travel.
This wedding reception was one of the crazier ones she has attended. Booze was flowing, the music was loud, and most guests were already drunk and on the dance floor.
Tenten and her had entered the premises only a few minutes back, and Hinata was already feeling awkward.
Sai was a famous tattoo artist and Tenten's family business supplied special handcrafted tools to him.
But now seeing some of the familiar faces of Sakura, Chouji, Shikamaru and Temari (who gave her the cold shoulder), and the bride Ino, Hinata knew that it won't be long before she crossed paths with Sasuke. The very idea made her nervous. Their last encounter had ended on a strange note.
Her inner musings came to a halt when she saw Sakura sit next to her at the table. Tenten was away chatting up with a potential client.
"Who invited you here?", was her first question.
Hinata wondered if she should even respond to a passively rude question.
"Well?", she pushed her to answer.
"I'm here with someone who was invited.", Hinata answered in a clipped tone.
"It's so convenient, isn't it? Showing up at a celebration you have no business being a part of.", her venom laced words only mildly offended her. Shino, her close friend always says- people who take digs at others are unhappy and bitter within, so feel sorry for them instead of yourself.
Grabbing her purse, she decided to go to the bar.
"A Daiquiri, please.", she requested the bartender.
"Martini."
She instantly recognized his voice beside her. She should have been more surprised, but she was already expecting to see him. She kept her eyes on the stained glass bartop, but if she were to be honest, she really wanted to turn towards him.
"I hoped to see you here.", Sasuke spoke to her.
Finally, she looked up at him and took in the minute changes. He grew his hair out a little, it made him look even more appealing if that was even possible.
"Aren't you a little late to the wedding?", she commented, as she had to drag her eyes away from his direction.
"I am. Apologetically so. Work commitments are to blame.", he rubbed his hand across his face tiredly. "I heard about you and Gaara from Shikamaru few months back."
"You seem to know a lot about me."
Their drinks were served promptly, and they both took to it quietly.
"Not as much as I would like.", he replied looking at her from the corner of his eyes.
Hinata could feel herself turning pink from the alcohol and Sasuke's unveiled interest. As stoic as he looks, he has always openly verbalised his interest in her, making her heart thrum. It was an odd sort of effect. One that she couldn't say she felt with Gaara.
"Kyoto is beautiful. I have only been here once when I was a kid.", he continued.
She nodded her head, then turned to see him. "Do you still live in Tokyo?"
"I do.", he started rotating his glass, an air of anxiousness around him as he grew silent for a few seconds. "With my girlfriend."
Her eyes widened at the revelation. She felt her heart drop steeply after a momentary soar.
He looked into her eyes with a pained apologetic expression. "I want to be honest with you."
Quickly, she looked away fearing a display of her vulnerability. "That's…. That's good."
"…. I'm not sure if I should say this, but I wish I wasn't in a relatio-"
"You shouldn't…. You shouldn't say it. ", she did not want to hear anymore. "It's not fair to your girlfriend."
"Nor is having thoughts about another woman. But somehow I cannot stop myself from thinking both of those things.", he gulped down the rest of his drink.
"Is it Sakura?", the questioned slipped past her lips before she could even judge if it was appropriate.
"No. Uzumaki Karin. She's Naruto's cousin."
She wondered if the said woman was at the party with him.
"I...I should get going.", she said as she got down her seat. "Goodbye."
"Can I atleast have your number? Believe me, I have the resources to get it myself, but I didn't think you would appreciate it."
He was right. She wouldn't. But she still had no good reason to share her number with him.
"Why do you need it?"
He frowned at her, upset at having to respond to a question he knew she wouldn't like the honest answer of.
"To keep in touch.", he half lied.
And she could see right through it. She would hate to be the reason for someone else's despair.
"Maybe next time."
---
Six months later.
We are engaged!! Karui and Chouji invite you to share their joy and celebrate the special occasion with them on….
"We've got to stop meeting like this… "
Hinata turned around to find Sasuke behind her, in a long black coat over a blue shirt and black trousers. He seemed unaffected by the freezing weather, as his eyes grazed over her. She was bundled up with every winter accessory she could fit into, but still felt like she was freezing her ass off. Now, seeing him look devastatingly handsome in the cold nights, and staring at her with those deep dark eyes, she felt a warm tingle run up her spine.
"You think so?", her voice sounded more steady and confident than she actually was.
"Am I finally allowed to have your number?", he asked her taking a step closer to her.
She had heard about his break up with Naruto's cousin, from their common friends. And she felt ashamed to realise that a burst of happiness had bloomed in her heart to be aware of the news. She wanted to keep her hopes low, but she did want to see him again. And here he was, right in front of her, wanting to know more about her.
"Don't you want to go inside and congratulate the newly engaged couple first?", she reminded him timidly.
"I have my priorities straight.", he replied and stayed put. Looking behind her, he asked her with an arched eyebrow. "Are you waiting for someone?"
"I was.", she smiled and stepped up to him. "Not anymore."
They both keep their eyes affixed on each other for a few seconds, before Sasuke instinctively wrapped his arms around her and buried his nose in her thick luscious hair, breathing in the scent he had been wanting to get another whiff of, for almost two years.
He sighed in satisfaction when he felt her arms hug him back. He realised that she was opening up to him too, so he took his chances.
"I like you.", he said blatantly.
She laughed shyly into his chest, before replying. "I do too. But I can't for long, if I freeze in this weather."
Chuckling, he rubbed his hands on her back, and turned her towards the door of the champagne bar. Once in the confines of the warm ambience, they both stuck together savouring each other's presence.
Most of their friends kept looking their way to scrutinize the budding relationship, but it did not affect the bubble they were in.
Chatting and drinking, they made up for lost time. When it was all done, they had shared their phone numbers, addresses, some anecdotes and a few promises.
---
Three months later.
We still Do and Always will. Come and join us as Uchiha Fugaku and Uchiha Mikoto renew their wedding vows on the eve of their 35th wedding anniversary on the….
Hinata read the thick gold embossed invitation card for Mr. and Mrs. Uchiha. She found it in her letterbox, returning back home from work.
Turning around the invite, she found a pale blue sticky note on it.
I know you told me that you might not be able to make it. But I just had to send it to you. It's only been a few weeks since we last saw each other, but I can't wait to see you again, under any pretext. If you can't make it to the vow renewal, I will drive to Kyoto the weekend after.
-Sasuke
Hinata bit her lower lip as she tried to contain her smile. Sasuke and her had agreed to try a long distance relationship, after they both realised that their work commitments could not be altered on a short notice. But they were both willing to try. Sasuke was usually the one to travel to Kyoto during weekends, Hinata had been to Tokyo only twice.
But what Hinata knew, and Sasuke didn't, was the job interview she had, at a reputed hospital in Tokyo the week after. It felt like they were both getting very serious very quickly. If he had invited her to a family event, it would mean that he had planned to introduce her to his family. It made her nervous to just think about it, but in a good way.
So, when she finally turned up at the party, in a stunning black backless dress, with news about her new job offer, Sasuke was completely blown over. That night, for the first time she gave herself to him, body and soul.
'People don't meet accidentally, they cross paths for a reason.'

Title inspiration:
+
After a long rehearsal dinner and a invitation to a bachelor party that they passed on. Ben, Rami, Gwilym and Joe had a brilliant idea to create a party of their own at their favorite, Rocco’s. To celebrate being in the same place again and finally catch up on missed time.
Rocco’s was your average dive bar and club on the outskirts of LA. Smelling like organic menthols and expensive trendy boozes. Dimly lit with neon lights guiding against exposed bricks and abstracts hanging along side them. Scattered tables, with more space for the people to dance. Ugly stools lining the bar with the traditional mixtures siding new age concoctions on the shelf behind. Fit for the yuppies and balancing out for the ones not so keen on the "hip" crowd tonight.
All the guys held up the bar, each taking turns on buying the next round of drinks. Laughing and carrying on, enjoying the atmosphere. Joe on the other hand, wasn’t paying so much attention to the conversation amongst the guys. Mindlessly turned against the bar, looking out to the crowd. He watched the people living their best lives tonight. All dancing and enjoying themselves. Downing the last sips of his beer. Eyeing some pretty women that had him thinking outrageously of taking one home. But only if they could replace the person running through his thoughts right now.
You.
You’re Joe’s best friend. You guys have been best friends since he had moved from New York to LA for college a few years back. You both attended and crossed paths at USC even with two different majors. Just one conversation about movies at a mutual friends party left you two inseparable since then. You guys practically did everything together. Ate lunch, studied, partied and so on. You two even lived together for a short while before Joe had to move for a film. Even then, you guys stayed in constant contact with each other. The miles didn’t exist in your friendship.
It wasn’t until the films started becoming more frequent for Joe and the extended time away that he realized that he not only missed you. But he was noticing that you were on his mind more ways than being just his friend.
He wanted to tell you so badly. It was always number one on his mind whenever you guys were around each other. To tell you everything he was feeling. He even planned it out to your favorite movie, because you always loved the sweet endings of rom coms.
But his plan was delayed when you invited him to dinner to meet Chris. You looked for approval from Joe before bringing a new person around others. It was important to you to hear him first. Chris was an overall nice, genuine guy Joe thought when he first met him. Attractive, sweet, funny... everything that kept a smile on your face the whole night. A smile Joe wished was for him again, but loved unconditionally. So to continue seeing it, he approved of Chris. With the little selfish thought that it wouldn’t last long. Joe hated himself for that.
Karma reminded him of that months ago over a FaceTime call with you, gushing over your engagement ring to Chris. He felt like his heart was ripped slowly from his chest that whole hour and half. But again, that smile and your happiness kept him quiet.
So now here was Joe. Leaning against a bar, with an empty bottle, checking out women that could never compare to you. On the night before your wedding.
Joe was starring at the floor when Ben snapped him out of it. “Mate, it’s your turn.” He nudged, Joe took a second before registering what was being asked of him. Turning to the bar now and placing his card down. Ben kept staring at him, knowing exactly what was going through Joe’s head.
“You have a few hours left.” Ben spoke quietly. Joe looked at Ben with a dumbfounded look. “I’m not going to do that to Y/N.” He said,
“She’s happy with Chris.” Taking a sip of his fresh bottle. “She doesn’t want me.” Ben knew Joe and knew he was sticking to his words. But he also believe in the possibilities.
“She could be happier too.” Ben said again and Joe knew that was his que to call it a night. Downing his beer faster than his mind could lose all thoughts. Gwil and Rami noticed the sudden change, but Joe didn’t get into it as he excused himself to get a head start on some sleep for tomorrow. Saying goodbye to them all.
++
Joe drove home with the windows down. Letting the warm, crisp of the LA night hit his exposed skin and rearrange his dark red locks. He passed your apartment as it was on the way to his house. Your lights were out and you were probably out celebrating your last night with your maiden name. He knew Ben was right, he had a few hours left. That there was a possibility that he could make you happier. But he also believed in reasoning and there was a reason why you were home for him to fuck up everything.
He was arriving home as he crept closer to his driveway. Noticing a figure sitting on his step, trying to make of it but finding no use until he pulled in all the way in. Almost leaving him breathless as he became aware of who it was.
It was you. Standing up slowly as he put his car in park and stepped out. You were dressed differently now from the last time he seen you hours ago at your rehearsal dinner. You were in your jogging attire, which you did before you’d go to sleep. Your Y/H/C hair falling everywhere from the ponytail it was in. And when he got closer to you, he noticed you had been crying from how swollen your eyes were.
“Are you alright?” He asked, silently kicking himself for choosing such a dumb question to start with. He watched as you wiped your cheek with your fingers. Nodding, “Can we talk?” You replied in question, before Joe gestured you to follow him up to the door.
He stayed calm even with feeling like a raging bull to find out what Chris did. But Joe didn’t say a thing. He knew things were not right for you right now. As you followed close behind while he unlocked the door.
Joe apologized for the mess as you both walked in. Looking as Joe turned on the lights leading to the living room.
“Want something to drink?” He asked as you entered the living room, standing in the middle of it as you far from wanting to sit and get comfortable. You shook your head and he obliged, taking a seat on his sofa, “what’s up?” Next he asked, casually.
You placed your hands over your face groaning into them. Feeling all sorts of ways for all the things that you were about to say. Mentally preparing how they would sound in the first place,
“The wedding is off.” You bluntly announced, Joe, who was lounging back on his sofa. Straightened his posture, his brown eyes made daggers as they grew wide. “What happened?” He asked again, “Where’s Chris?” He went on, vamped like he was going to kill him. I shook my head, reassuring that this wasn’t Chris’ fault.
Joe raised his brow, “Then what’s going on?” He spoke, “Is it cold feet?” Which made you chuckle, wiping your face from an escaping tear. “Something like that, I guess.” You exclaimed. Beginning to look at the floor.
You ended things because denying your feelings for Joe had become unbearable. You felt so stupid letting it go for so long, but the rehearsal dinner and him leaving early just pulled a string. You were pretty sure you were going to lose your best friend and possibly the love of your life if you walked the aisle in the morning. That scared you more than anything.
You decided to take a seat next to Joe on the sofa. Feeling his chestnut eyes cutting you like daggers as he waited for you. For the first time feeling nervous to speak to him.
So you sighed, blinking your eyes before moving them up to Joe’s. “I had ideas on what I was going to say to you on my run here.” You began, “but I don’t think none of its going to come out like I want it to.” you added, biting your lip.
“It’s been a scary few months since this has been weighing and the days have been passing and how much of an asshole I’ve been just wasting time.” You started, taking a breath, “At first I just thought it was normal. That it wasn’t anything. That they would pass.” Shaking you head at your concealing. “But it never passed and I was only realizing that I was about to lose what I need.”
Joe just continued to stare, listening to you with his heartbeat going a mile per second. Hoping to fucking god you couldn’t hear it like he did. You looked at him again before meeting the floor, clearing your throat and preparing for what you’ve been wanting to say this whole time.
“So here it goes,” you continued. Closing your eyes, “I have feelings for you, Joe.” You confessed, then. Placing your hands on your knees as you felt yourself start to shake. Feeling relieved but terrified all in one. More horrid when Joe didn’t move, or say anything and you seen everything you’ve been through with him flash like life would.
It made you panic, the silence as it grew longer. You stood up fast, shaking your head to yourself. “This night is turning into a disaster. I-I’m so sorry.” You stuttered, about to make a getaway to Joe’s door. But you were so caught up in your rambling thoughts, you didn’t notice Joe’s immediate action when he grabbed your arm. Spinning you and crashing his lips upon yours.
You didn’t move for a moment, stuck in your mind until you realized what was happening. Joe’s wrapping around you, deepening the kiss. Yours moving swiftly in time around his neck and your lips beginning to move against his. Your fingers lost in dark auburn hair. You felt like you were dreaming.
Joe pulled away gently, coming up for air. Snapping you back into reality as you opened your eyes slow. You met his sweet smile, feeling his hand caress your cheek as he leaned down to pepper more kisses to your lips and face. Causing your heart to beat astronomically, leaving you smiling.
“You have no idea how long I’ve been waiting to do that.” Joe spoke, moving the hair from your face. “What’s been going through my mind for the last 24 hours.” Adding, “I was set to lose you, Y/N.” He confessed, noticing the tears about to fall over the brim of his eyes. You shook your head, bringing him into a embrace.
“You have me. All of me.” You said, softly. “Always.” Kissing the skin between his neck and shoulder. You both stood like that for minute before he pulled away, leaning down to kiss you again. This one feeling different than the last, needy, eager and intense all wrapped in one. As he grazed his tongue along your bottom lip, asking for entry.
++
It picked up from there and so were you. Joe wrapped you around his waist, holding you as he took you through the hall and to his bedroom. Laying you down carefully, like you were porcelain, onto his bed. Spreading your legs as he made room for himself to hover over you. Prolonging the kisses and letting them discover you. From your lips to your jaw and down your neck, like he already knew what made you tick as you hummed into them.
Your hands resting on his neck and then on his back. Moving the fabric up to discard him of his shirt. You had thoughts like this about Joe often, feeling bashful about them before this. It was like you two had done this together before. How relaxed and comfortable you were.
Joe paused, letting you help him out of his shirt and throw it behind. His hands meeting the exposed skin of your stomach, letting him move your shirt up and over his body. Leading to him leeching onto the new areas of skin. Kissing trails over your collarbones, your lightly exposed breasts and feathering kisses under the band of your bra. Giggling as it tickled a bit. Joe then reached behind you, unclasping your lilac colored bra. You hissed, delightfully as the cold sharply met your tender breasts. Turning into a moan immediately when Joe mouth took them upon themselves. Kissing, sucking, x’s and o’s over all the sensitivity. Your hands tangled into Joe’s locks as he kept looking up at you. Smiling, embedding this picture of you in brain as you looked beautiful as ever.
He then trailed his lips down again towards the waistband of your leggings, lapping his fingers until it as he began to discard them off you. Leaving you in your panties before him and he could see how wet you were through them. Over the moon that this was happening, that he caused this of you as thought about it for ages.
“Please, Joe.” You pleaded. As he was inches away from your heat. He wanted to toy but the way that his name sounded falling off your lips. He wanted to hear it again. Joe trailed his lips on insides of your thighs, coming close to damp fabric over your heat. You gasped when his thumb found the middle, swiping down slowly through your folds. Feeling how wet you were now.
He then took a hold of the band of your panties, slipping them off and leaving you meet the cool air. You moaned, lightly. Feeling completely exposed and so ready for what Joe was going to do.
Joe began shortly after, kissing your mound lightly before his tongue moved through your folds. Finding your clit and making you a moaning mess. Your hips bucked eagerly as he worked you, wrapping his arms around your bottom half to keep you in place. Your fingers lost in his hair. Pleading for Joe not to stop echoed throughout his room.
You were beginning to feel the knot forming in the pit of your stomach as your orgasm as approaching vastly. But you didn’t want to it yet, not without him. “Joe, baby.” Barely being recognizable from your lips. “I-I need you to–stop.” You breathed, Joe finally coming to his senses as you were trying to grab his attention.
He crawled up to you immediately, “Did I-” you shook your head, placing your hand on his face. Giving him a soft peck, before meeting the pillow again.
“I need you.” You simply explained, Joe relaxed then. Smirking before he leaned down and kissed you again, deeply. You let your hands trail down his slender chest till you reached the buckle of his belt. Feeling his cock pressing against the restricting fabric as you palmed him, falling to pieces as he groaned against your neck now.
Joe backed up off the bed, you followed leaning up on your elbows as you watched him. Hearing the zippers and buttons of his jeans hit the floor. Feeling giddy like teenagers on their try, your cheeks getting red when he was left in boxers, to only get hotter as he took them off and his cock sprung free. Biting your lip at the sight. You crawled to the end of the bed, ready to take care of him as you reached. But Joe stopped you, clasping his hand into yours.
“No, baby.” He said, “I need to feel you.” He confessed. Bringing your hand to his mouth and kissing it and down your arm. You smiled, enthralled by all of this. This moment. You still felt like you were cloud 9, none of it felt real as you were in a dream state right now.
You followed Joe’s lead as he helped you lay back down. As he positioned himself between your legs, kissing you as he lined himself with you. One hand on your hip, the other on the side of your head. He thrusted in slowly, his eyes never leaving your face as you gasped from his size.
He waited for you to adjust to him, kissing your sweet spots till you gave him the go. Slowly pulling out and pushing back in a few times till your discomfort turned into moans hitting against the walls. You brought him down to you, kissing him hard before pulling away. His forehead leaning against yours and his eyes closed as he took you both to where you need to be. His name becoming sing song off your lips, telling him how good he was making you feel. Joe’s moans were what was bringing you closer. The way he looked above you was a sight for sore eyes. Your hands meeting his face and shoulders, around his neck and back again. Watching his body contract as he snapped his hips into yours.
“You look so beautiful” You whimpered as you watched him. He made a cross sound between a laugh and moan, his cheeks flustered now, kissing you heavy, “Fuck, I love you so much. So so much.” He stuttered, picking up his speed erratically. Making you aware he was close like you.
That familiar knot started forming again, like water beginning to boil at the pit of your stomach. “I’m so close” you breathed, then. Feeling yourself growing closer as your back began to rise off the mattress. Joe noticed, wrapping his arms around you and adjusting you both till you straddled his lap. The change shocked you, causing you to get louder. Joe watched your body collide beautifully together, before looking at you.
He got close to your ear, “Come with me, Y/N” He said, resting his forehead to yours, watching you. Before moving that hand again to your clit, helping you. As he thrusted up into you and grinded back to him.
Soon your orgasm broke free, your body beginning to tremble and profanities you didn’t even know exist fell from your lips with Joe’s name. Joe a second later met his, helping you both ride out the euphoric moment. Attaching his lips to yours in need before laying back down on the bed, still wrapped up in you.
He had both of his arms at each side of your head, moving your scattered hair from your pretty face. Your hands running up his back softly as you took each other in. Without any word as you both waited to cool off, staying like this. Meant to be.

Amoretto - Chapter 3 - (Branjie) - dreamyunicorngirl
A/N: I am back! Sorry for the extremely long delay. Uni is kicking my butt - mostly because I genuinely assumed they would go easy on us in the first two weeks. Well - that wasn’t the case. I hope you can somewhat enjoy this chapter! Big thank you again to Meggie for being an amazing beta!
“We should get outta here.”
The blonde only rolls her eyes, as she carefully stretches her wings, at Vanessa’s exaggerated lash fluttering and her suggestive smirk. Not even buying her act for a second. The cackle afterwards already ruining her flirty illusion.
“And where do you wanna go in the middle of the night, ‘Ness?” Brooke asks, desperately trying to sound uninterested as she eyes the crowd around them, still not forgotten why she had stayed in the first place. Yet there isn’t a single sign of the other immortal, hiding in the crowd, to be seen. With one last disappointing glance she sighs heavily and lets her act fall, finally facing the young woman by her side. Desperately wanting to leave this hormone driven place.
“Ohh we’ve got a nickname - cute, Mary - so you don’t hate me all that much?”, Vanessa giggles as she elbows the ethereal women, doe eyes searching for the slightly hidden exit. Long brown curls bouncing as her head snaps around, attempting to find a way out of the sultry club in her highly intoxicated state.
“Also it’s a secret - so I can’t tell you where we are going”, she finally remembers to answer the blonde’s question, placing her left index finger in front of her dry lips - attempting to highlight her wannabe mysterious aura. Within a second though a cheshire cat smile peeks out beneath her finger as Brooke shakes her had - amused by the brunette’s state -, before she lets it drop down and grabs the blonde’s cold wrist instead, banning her way through the crowd. Unknown shoulders bump into the swaying Latina’s small figure, elbows nearly landing in her face and even a beverage finds its way on her dress, as she drags Brooke out of the bar - Cupid obviously evading any harm. Bypassers moving aside, subscousinsly making room for the present goddess.
Brooke is seemingly impressed by the fact that Vanessa actually manages to find her way outdoors without getting into a heated fight with the guy who managed to spill some soda on her - according to the brunette - very expensive dress. Her olive-toned hands were already neatly tightened into fists, but one pointed look by Cupid was enough for her to turn around and let it go. Stomping through the barely lit corridor towards the exit.
As the cold wind hits their flushed bodies, even Brooke begins to shiver. Goosebumps cover her limbs and leave the woman, normally so used to the cold, a bit shaken up, though she welcomes the change of temperature, having felt like she was being cooked in a big soup bowl for the past two hours. Her grande wings are finally able to stretch to their full capacity. Tense shoulders roll back as she cracks her neck, trying to get rid of all the accumulated tension.
The bright pink neon sign of the night club illuminates the two stranded figures, painting them in a soft heavenly glow, highlighting Brooke’s empty leather quiver - a successful night, if you asked Venus . Both women deeply inhaling the cold air, eyes closed, simply enjoying the silence after a long night.
The blonde beauty’s mind tries to process tonight’s events. Running in circles - overthinking one life changing encounter. But she tries to keep her cool. Exhale. Inhale. Just breath.
The inner peace found within these two beings is destroyed within a second. A car speeds by as men in their late twenties shout obscene comments at Vanessa, honking and laughing at the brunette’s fury painted cheeks.
Brooke expects an explosion. She can see the fire igniting right in front of her eyes, waiting for Vanessa to unleash her irreparable destruction. She had seen it during lonely nights she spent looking out for the young woman - had seen her explode with anger at her heartbreaks.
But all she does is calmly flick them off and intertwines her fingers with a stunned Brooke, tugging her along while they turn the corner. Two figures walk in silence, hand in hand, the brunette taking the lead, following the directions written in her heart.
With each corner they turn, they start to leave the inner city circle and all of the dark alleys littered with drunk party-goers behind.
Brooke silently lets herself dragged into uncertainty for the second time this night, blindly trusting the woman she barely knows. Stormy eyes carefully take in every inch of all the lonely streets they pass. Darkness, filling the space around them. Only the hum of overly loud TV screens disturb the calm silence every once in a awhile.
Occasionally she can spy strangers making out at a corner - none of them searching for something lasting - homeless people crashing on park banks or sleeping in the streets, stray dogs howling in the night - catching the younger woman off guard. A hint of a smile can be found on Brooke’s lips as the brunette jumps at the sound.
“Are you sure you we are going the right way?” Brooke asks after half an hour of lost wandering through less crowded streets. Fewer houses started to frame the ground they walk on as patches of nature claim their place.
“Trust me, Mary! I know where we’re going - it’s real special,” Vanessa calmly answers softly.
Brooke does a double take at the woman beside her, not having expected a soft mutter by her counterpart. Both of them had spent the majority of the walk in utter silence, simply enjoying the night silence around them, appreciating nature’s beauty around them. Not even a quick ramble from the brunette to conceal the awkward moment as Brooke let go of Vanessa’s hand.
They continue their journey until they reach the outer brim of the city. Slowly making their way through the forest adjacent to the meadow behind the last houses of the most rural area. The blonde catches sight of fireflies lighting up the bushes around them and baby rabbits settling down for the night in a small cave. Brooke immediately feels the shift within her as the two women disappear between the trunks. Complete calmness flood her being, feeling at home, far away from most humans. No need to hide, no need to pretend - even though no one could ever see her, besides Vanessa. Yet she still felt the pressure to behave a certain way since she discovered someone could actually see her - suddenly feeling the need to change. Wanting to fit it. Concealing her large wings and blood red arrows with a practiced smile and a polite nod in whatever direction she feels the imaginary eyes come from.
The deeper they make their way through the forest, the darker and louder it gets. Terra is celebrating Cupid’s arrival, bees are humming and birds are chirping their welcome melody, having missed their goddess.
Brooke isn’t the only one to notice. Vanessa stops in her tracks to pet a little fox and comments on the fireflies and cooling breeze circling the two women.
But once they cross the last line of trees and arrive at abandoned lake, nature’s creatures fall silent after reaching their crescendo. Outer calmness can be felt on the meadow. Brooke feels the mysterious aura surrounding the place deep in her core as a harsh shiver runs down her body.
Vanessa stalks up to the lake, slightly swaying - Brooke wasn’t sure if it’s her high heels or the alcohol - taking a seat on a large rock right next to the edge of the lake. The brunette pulls her long locks into a low ponytail and lets her feet sway above the ground, staring down the stretch of water in front of her.
Cupid watches from afar, keeps track of the Latina’s every move but doesn’t dare to come closer. Her feet are bound to the floor while she contemplates her next move.
She could just run. Stop giving a crap about the woman she barely knows. Just leave her behind and return to her safe space and comfort zone. Yet something was holding her back. An invisible string of yarn pulling her closer to the mysterious girl - the one and only who has every properly laid her eyes on her.
As if the brunette could read her mind, she turns around and pets the space on the rock next to her with a “What’s taking you so long, Mary?”
Apparently Brooke has no choice, but to follow the brunette’s request.
So she lets her wings carry her the last few meters and joins the other woman on her rocky seat, nervously waiting for an explanation. One that she doesn’t immediately receive.
“And what are we supposed to do here?” she finally asks out loud, suspiciously eyeing the dark water, watching the reflection of the moon dance on its surface.
“Go skinny dipping,” Vanessa replies matter of factly, a sly grin stretched across her face as she pulls off her high heels.
The blonde snaps her head around, confusion written all over her face.
“What?” Furrowed brows stare at a cackling Latina who can barely control the harsh tones escaping her throat.
“You know we just get nakey-nakey, Mami, and then dip our toes into the water. Go for a swim and shit - have some deep-ass conversations,” Vanessa explains, giggling along as she points towards the lake and bumps the other one’s shoulder.
Within the swift of a moment she stands up and asks Brooke to unzip her dress. The blonde silently complies, watching the brunette take her panties off and make her way into the water, dipping her toes into the cold. Small waves lap at her olive tanned skin, hugging the woman’s figure, drenching all of her.
Brooke hesitates shortly, as she keeps an eye on the short woman, yet she still somehow feels the strong urge to just run away. Bees are buzzing in her bones, keeping her restless, prepared to flee the place.
Yet she is still being held back, like a stone in her chest weighing her down. An indescribable force clinging to her feet, keeping her in place.
So with a deep yet shaky breath she decides to join the other woman, instead of giving into her primal urge of flight. Shy fingertips carefully peel of her white sheer robe, letting it pool around her bare feet.
Her wings flutter nervously as she catches the brunette staring. Doe eyes scan over her naked soul, pupils dilated as she bites her lipstick stained lips. Shamelessly enjoying the view.
“Do you always take your friends here to stare at them naked?” Brooke teases the brunette, whose eyes immediately snap back to her eyes, trying to break the heavy tension.
Vanessa’s soft smile falls for a second, before she catches herself and answers flirtatiously with a wink: “Just the real special ones, Brookey.”
The blonde quietly steps into the water, toes already drenched in the ice cold wet. Simply enjoying the added coolness to her frame. She closes her eyes as the water sweeps over her breasts, letting her head fall back, wetting her delicate hair.
“It’s actually quite nice here,“ she whispers after opening her eyes again, slowly walking into the deeper parts of the lake until she can’t stand anymore, stretching out her frame for a little swim.
“Yes, haven’t been here in a while though, not since the first girl I took here broke my heart and shit,” Vanessa mumbles, looking up to the stars as if she was reading memories of the past carved into the night sky.
“I am sorry,” Brooke whispers. Genuine regret leaking out of her throat - knowing she is responsible for that heartbreak. Wishing she hadn’t brought anything up in the first place even though she couldn’t have known Vanessa’s story.
“Nah, it’s fine. Aquaria wasn’t even really my type. Sure she was pretty but we didn’t click. I wanted a big ass romance, just like in the movies. Didn’t get one though,” Vanessa rambles on, while avoiding immediate eye contact as she walks in circles at the edge of the lake. Arms crossed across her chest, a shivering figure attempting to keep the warmth, finally daring to completely immerse herself in the deep wet, taking Brooke’s lead for once.
“Why would you even want that?” Brooke carefully voices, facing the brunette, studying her expression, not wanting to hurt her feelings. Nervously chewing at her bottom lip at asking her deepest rotted questions finally out loud.
“Want what?” Brown doe eyes fixate on her counterpart again, not fully grasping the depth of her question just yet.
“Love. Why are you so hung up on it?”Cupid elaborates her question, her wings hung low, swinging softly beneath the surface, creating tiny waves around her.
“I - I don’t know. I mean sort of I do know - I am human - we all just wanna feel loved, I guess?” Vanessa tries to answer the other woman’s way too existential question for her intoxicated state, pausing for a second to gather her thoughts, wanting to properly elaborate her thoughts. “You know ever since I was a child I dreamed of finding ‘the one’ - my prince or princess charming. I saw those romantic movies as a kid and read those fairytales with my abuela. I just always wanted that dream to come true - and still do. Just want to have someone that sticks by your side, no matter what. Deep down I just wanna be someone’s number one I guess. Give them my all in return and shit.”
For once the coldness of the water is actually hitting the young woman. A shiver runs up her entire figure as she hugs her bare frame, arms above the surface, graced by cool wind gusts. Feeling vulnerable for the first time this evening as she slowly sobers up, goosebumps covering her chest and arms. She slowly crosses her arms, hugging her own figure as she attempts to somewhat hide her bare soul.
Brooke hums and nods her head at Vanessa’s explanation before stating the thoughts running through her mind: “I wish I could understand you humans and your obsession with it. It just seems like such a strange concept to me. Even if the relationship isn’t doomed, like most are.” Cupid rolls her eyes at her own statement, as if it was common knowledge. “I still don’t understand how it formed in the first place. Sure I play a big role in that, but still - I dont think I could care about someone enough to stick around.”
“I guess you just know why once you’ve actually been in love. Sure it isn’t always fun and games, especially if you have such bad luck like me, but there is always hope for a brighter future one day - shit I don’t know Mary, but love is just beautiful when it all works out - the warm fuzzy feeling and all…” Vanessa’s voice grows soft as she moves to the edge of the lake, carefully lowering herself into the shallow water.
A soft “mhh” escapes the goddess’s lips as she joins the other woman, letting her wings stretch above the lake’s surface, illuminated by the soft moonlight as it reflects on her porcelain skin and nearly white hair. Making her glow from inside, contrasting her self-proclaimed, dark interior.
“But there must be someone you love. Don’t you at least love your parents?” Vanessa carefully studies the immortal’s side profile as she quietly voices her question, craving to know more about her strange counterpart.
“I don’t know my parents,” Brooke softly replies, nervous fingertips playing with shorter strands of hair. Stormy eyes flutter shut for a second - a sting to the place where her heart is supposed to be.
“Hold up, bitch. You don’t know your parents?” Vanessa screeches, hands thrown in the air and eyes opened up wide, unobservant of the blonde’s pained expression.
“No,” Brooke replies coldly. Not ready to unpack her dizzy memories of the past.
“Then who raised you?” Vanessa asks seemingly confused, head leaning on her hand. Shuffling even closer to the mesmerizing girl.
“My two older sisters,” Cupid cuts her answer short, not willingly wanting to dig her own grave by giving away too much too soon.
“Sisters?” the Latina screams one octave higher than her usual truck driver voice, mouth hanging agape at Brooke Lynn’s sudden revelation. Her shoulders slouch back, nearly falling back into the deep water at her sudden twitch.
The blonde simply nods, her chest constricting at the thought. She hadn’t seen her sisters in millenia. All alone ever since their last encounter - only left with a hole in her chest. Left with her self-deprecating thoughts and ever burning questions.
“Spill the tea, sis.” The brunette shifts again and pulls her knees up to her chest, arms wrapped around them, now completely facing the blonde.
With each passing second the blonde’s face gains more resemblance with a ice statue. Hollow eyes stare down her own reflection on the lake, words caught in her throat.
Moments pass in silence. Two figures lost in their own worlds.
“Well there are three of us. Detox, Kameron, and me. Three sisters. Three goddesses. We grew up together, they taught me everything I needed to know. But that was a long time ago. I don’t remember much,” Brooke mumbles, avoiding bright doe eyes, simply staring down her feet immersed in the cold liquid.
“Two sisters? Are they also Cupid ?” The brunette’s big eyes seem to grow even bigger in size with each new piece of information she receives. Lapping up all the answers she gets but still craving more.
“I don’t really know. I don’t know much about our existence in general. The humans just nicknamed me Cupid, I guess - don’t know what they call them though,” Brooke trails of, not fully knowing how to put her experiences into words.
“Have you seen them since?”
Brooke’s stomach sinks at the innocently voiced question.
“I lost contact to them once I was old enough,” she tries to vaguely answer.
“And you never saw them again? Like ever?” Vanessa attempts to dig deeper, shaky legs beneath the surface painting a picture of her inner state.
Shit.
“Well I might have,” Brooke admits. The water plants besides her figure suddenly more interesting than anything else.
“I knew it! Spill it!” the brunette demands. Her body shaking with excitement as her grin grows bigger in size.
“Tonight I might have seen one of my sisters - actually, she was talking to you Blue crystals peek out beneath slightly damp lashes. She takes a deep breath as the blonde furiously tries to blink away the tears pooling at the corners of her eyes.
Deep green painted sorrow floods her lungs at the missed opportunity of the night.
“Wait - no way - Kameron is your sister?” the brunette loudly whispers, slender hands clapped above her mouth. Eyes brightly lit at her revelation.
"I don’t know if your friend was her, she just looked really familiar.” Brooke shrugs, not knowing why she even shared her suspicions. Attempting to casually wipe at her wet lash line, trying to erase any evidence of weakness.
"But where are her wings though?” Vanessa furrows her brows, the underlying and unvoiced questions nearly burning a hole into the ground.
“I have no idea.”
Flashes of memories and never dealt with emotions swirl through Cupid's head. Constricting her chest and never wanting to let go.
"That’s why I stuck around, you know - tried to figure out who she actually is,” Brooke attempts to explain, not knowing any answer to Vanessa’s urgent questions - and neither to her own.
“Damn mami, that’s a goddamn mystery. Should be on Buzzfeed Unsolved ”, Vanessa cackles as she shakes her hair like a wet dog just getting out of the rain.
“Wait what?"
"Never mind.” The brunette’s laugh just intesifes at the blonde’s visible confusion.
Vanessa crawls down out of the shallow water they’ve been sitting in and silently battles putting on her dress again - before the ladylike creature offers her help.
"So that’s all you have. Two sisters. No parents. You are Cupid , don’t get the concept of love and neither know much about your existence. Real cute - Mary. Nearly as much of a mess as I am. "
Two equally as intoxicating laughs haul through the night air as the two figures take a seat on a still mildly warm rock. Heavy doe eyes flutter shut as the young woman falls asleep on her shoulder during sunrise. The first ray of sunlight illuminates the wings of cupid as she carries the woman home, lovingly tucking her into her bed.

Monster’s Shadow
Summary: yet another snippet from a story I couldn’t get off the ground. And again, another escape from an imprisonment/kidnapping type story. I think I see a pattern of what I struggle with...
Kuwabara tries to escape his captors.
*****
In all his years of doing this type of job, it had never been so damn difficult.
The human delivered another kick to his head, and Ban growled turning accusingly to his partner, "Kou! Help for the love of-ahh!"
Kou merely laughed watching from his place at the fire, "Nah. You've been an ass to him. You deserve to get the shit kicked out of you!"
"Fuck you!" Ban snarled, gasping as the human caught him in the stomach with his tied fists, and that was that. Ban went down like a sack of potatoes wheezing for breath.
Kazuma Kuwabara took off into the woods, not even looking back at the downed demon, or his laughing partner.
He leaped over a downed tree, looking around trying to get his bearings, but he still didn't know the Makai very well. If Hiei or Kurama was here they'd be able to tell him whose territory he was in like reading off a street name, but Kuwabara couldn't tell one strange tree from the other here. For now, he'd rely on his feelings to guide him through and hope that he'd get away this time.
The longer he delayed them, the better chance for finding Yusuke he had.
"Oh come on Kuwabara, there's no use running!" Kou sighed appearing in front of Kuwabara.
Kuwabara crashed into Kou's chest, the quick demon taking him by surprise once again. He fell back hard, the air getting knocked out of him as he hit his tail bone, and he rolled to one side silently cursing.
"I'd just catch you," Kou said with a cheeky grin.
Kuwabara glared at Kou, and rolled himself to one side, using his elbows to help prop himself up since his hands were useless.
"I'm not the type to go quietly along..." Kuwabara hissed keeping his distance.
"If you keep acting up Ban's gonna hurt you, and I don't want that! I like you!" Kou whined pulling a face, "Look you're tied up, you can't use your sword, just play along and be a good prisoner!"
Kuwabara made a face, "Eat me ya dickhead!"
Kou blinked, and then threw up his head and laughed. Kuwabara turned sharp to the left and ran again. He was seething at the thought that he was some sort of joke to Kou, the cocky demonic bastard. He was like a terrible mix of Yusuke and Hiei, all the worst and most annoying parts.
Kuwabara was no whimpering maiden. He wasn't injured (badly) either. He'd be damned if he made it easy for anyone trying to snatch him up.
He ducked as his senses went into overdrive, sending a chill down his spine warning of danger. He dodged Ban's wildly lashing arm just in time managing to get away from the demon before he took his head off. Ban howled after him, shouting all sorts of obscenities.
"When we catch you this time, you'll be lucky if I leave you alive for the boss!"
Kuwabara pumped his legs harder.
So, there was a big boss. Someone pulling the strings. Kou had hinted last time, but it was... well not a relief to hear someone had paid for a goon squad to get him, but it let Kuwabara know someone had a plan in motion. There was something comforting in this not being a wild random act of kidnapping. Though... maybe he shouldn't be comforted by the fact someone wanted him snatched at all.
Things didn't go so hot the last time he was snatched, and he'd be damned if there was another repeat like with Sensui!
Ban lunged, his claws raking across Kuwabara's back and tearing the back of his shirt. Kuwabara sucked in a breath, and tried to keep going, but Ban's other hand grabbed him by the waist before tugging him roughly down. They fell in a pile, and Kuwabara's face was shoved hard in the ground, his nose bending painfully.
"I would rip the head from your shoulders if I didn't need you alive to get paid!" Ban whispered, face so close to Kuwabara his teeth scraped the back of his neck.
"Ban, stop! Get off him," Kou's voice demanded, and shortly after Ban was pulled off Kuwabara's back.
Kuwabara lay panting on the ground, a sick little knot forming in his throat as he tried to ignore the burning pain of his back.
Kou was next to him suddenly, helping him up to his feet. Kuwabara held in his voice, wanting to gasp or make a sound of pain from the jolt of being put on his feet when he wasn't ready, but he held it in. He blinked his eyes watering as he forced himself to stand as Kou went about inspecting him.
"Tsk. Kuwabara... stop trying to get away! I really don't want to rough ya up, you know?" Kou whined, "And Ban, well if he gets started he's just going to really let you have it, and you'll be real sorry if he gets goin'!"
Kuwabara rolled his eyes.
"I saw that you shit!" Ban seethed, screeching loudly as he pointed at Kuwabara, "You think you're so tough, you fucking human?! I could fucking eat you right now-"
"Ohhh ooo. He's gonna grind my bones to make his bread!" Kuwabara mocked, Ban going red with rage.
Kou laughed, his arms curling around himself as he howled with laughter at the look on his partner's face.
Kuwabara blinked, and Ban's fist was slammed into his stomach.
He doubled over, unable to breathe, but did not fall.
Ban grabbed Kuwabara by the hair, holding him in place, and slammed his fist into Kuwabara's stomach again. Kuwabara closed his eyes against the pain, biting his tongue to keep from screaming. He really felt like vomiting now.
Ban pulled back his hand to try for a third, but Kou caught it, tilting his head at Ban like he was a bad child.
"Enough now Ban... enough," Kou said, a smile still in his lips.
"You think you're some top shit ordering me around don't you Kou?!" Ban spat, his rage now boiled over, "Well I'm tired of this little shit, and I'm tired-"
Kuwabara was still doubled over when he saw Kou's shadow change. What had looked like a normal man suddenly twisted. The head split into many jagged pieces, and the body stretched and changed. The air shifted, and Kuwabara felt an immense power pool from Kou, colder and stronger than he had first sensed.
"Enough now Ban. I don't like you hitting Kuwabara. I like Kuwabara. You need to stop now," Kou said, but his voice was different. Softer. Lighter. Deadly.
"I-I'm stopped. I'm stopped," Ban meekly replied, taking several steps away from Kou and Kuwabara.
His sudden absence frightened Kuwabara, but he pushed those fears down, and forced himself to stand. He was Kazuma Kuwabara, and he wasn't going to show any of his captors fear.
He turned to look, and Kou was the same smiling demon who had abducted him two days ago, his purple eyes gleaming with delight.
"Let's not run away anymore today, okay Kuwabara?" Kou asked, his voice mockingly kind as he placed a friendly arm around Kuwabara's shoulder.
Kuwabara wanted to shrug it off, but he didn't. He nodded quietly, and Kou smiled.
"Good! There's a good boy!" Kou laughed delighted and tugged Kuwabara along.
Kou waved at Ban, who Kuwabara noticed was extremely pale, and could not look up at either Kou or Kuwabara.
"See?" Kuo said, "It's better when we all play along isn't it?"
Kuwabara would run harder tomorrow. Tomorrow, he'd get away.

“What are you doing?” someone once asked.
“Reading.”
“There’s this one Old Folktale Story, that had stood out to me…”
“What was it about?”
Well, The story goes, that there was this once a young boy who read about his fate,... he was going to die in a few days.
And so it went on and he asked the black raven bird “Why?” The raven then replied, “It cannot be helped boy, it is your fate.” To his dismay, he cried…. “Please, I would do anything.” He begged. “I am sorry but this my job, I cannot break it for I am the gate beholden of death.” “But… I will make an exception boy if you find me these three ingredients I will allow you to live. In a world where anything is possible, you are god.“A g-god?!?!” “Indeed, A fake world. “Ingredients:1.Red gemstone2. A feather from the golden-bird3.Black-hearted stone(from hell)“SURE!” He replied…. without any hesitation. And so, he went on to find the three ingredients. Traveling in a great distance. It took him weeks to complete his task. Until the final day had come….“Very well, boy!” Here is the key.. Go on… walk. But the young boy only stayed still. Not walking any forward. He asked, “I do not know why.” “Oh, you must be scared right? Oh please, it is only normal for humans.” Then the boy realized the significance of his words and decided to live in this world, the real one… to where he is now today.
Amongst the soldiers in the Great War, there lived a legend. At first, it was thought to be merely an absurd rumor, though with popular word and time fear spread more rapidly than wildfire and hovered in the atmosphere like a contagious fog.
Friend and foe alike lived in terror of this illusive creature of nightmares, and as five long, wretched years wore on the innominate, faceless character plagued the morality of the battlefield. He was hailed as a battalion of ludicrous names, namely a vengeful ghost, then a murderous ghoul, and finally a phantasmagorical-robotic-apparitional thing conjured by hallucinations of the imagination.
But no one truly knew who he was. No one knew where he had come from, or to whom this abhorrent monstrosity belonged. Those who had encountered him were never the same. Not that there were many who survived the ordeal if the aforementioned misfortune were to befall them. He was said to be no older than an adolescent boy of fifteen or sixteen years, always clothed in ethereal white. Rather than the traditional rifle or bayonet, he carried a peculiar weapon :a bilateral, double-ended kind of sword, twice as long as the average human being. Apparently, he could annihilate entire factions in a matter of minutes, and without so much as a single variation in his facile demeanor.
But what evoked the greatest terror of all was his eyes. Allegedly, they were at all times concealed with wrapped layers of white bandages, obscuring the top half of his face. And on the occasion that those linen bindings were unwound.... None who saw them lived to tell what exactly they had seen behind his irises before their souls were torn from their bodies and a ghastly death greeted them at the gates of Hell.
Perhaps the heavens condemned this war, and so they had sent such an appalling emissary to convey this disapprobation. As time went on, the grim reaper in white was at last given a name. The strikingly beautiful paragon of carnage and bloodshed that was lovely like a seraph, and yet heartless like the devil. The very personification of Death himself.
“A black-haired boy with large amber eyes closed the book, and then he spoke,
A black-haired girl laid on his lap.. whispering back- “Well looks like you’ve already fallen asleep.”
There’s nowhere my heart can embark….. “Please take me away.” she pleaded.
But the black-haired boy only stared at her. She already had a feeling, That this boy had only ‘pitied her, That’s why he had no special power, The only thing he only carried was a knife, That was his ‘true’ weapon. And that’s why he had helped.
“If you wish,
You can draw a world,
Picture it,
Engrave it,
In your mind.
If it meant to save you from death,
If it meant pure flaked happiness
Would you like to live,
In that world, away from reality?”
One day, 4 months ago… she woke up, Sitting on her bed. She was bedridden. “It’s me.” She quietly spoke. “I-I wished…. To go back..” although she let those words slipped. “Your wish is my very command.” he continued- the boy that looked so much- idenitcal to the other one... was he his twin perhaps? “Very well..but you have a time limit.”
“Wait- but I didn’t mean it… “ the girl now realizing her words.
“A wish is a wish, it is my job. That is not what your heart says. You must hurry.” he responsed back. Which has only caused such a slight fright to the girl. She took in a deep sigh. “Very well.” Yes, it was true, there was nothing more I wanted than to just go back, to fix all my mistakes….
“To go back...” she repeated. “I-I need to kill her, that girl….”
“But that girl is yourself… Is it not?” the voice spoke.
“Shut up!”
“Why do you wish to kill yourself?”
“I should’ve died…...”
“It’s been 4 months since I was first checked in the hospital, right? I can’t get out of bed, so each day is unbelievably long, I wonder when I could check out….”
-“Well, …. I probably can’t, huh?”-You already knew from the first time I checked in right? The time I have left is slowly running out……” To put it bluntly, I am going to die soon. My body is still so weak, I had so many things I wanted…I wanted to go to college, earn tons of money, be successful, and become happy..
But..,
How could I wish upon such useless things? When I didn’t need any of those? The only thing I wanted most right now is,
I wished, “ to change fate..”
“I just wanted to live.” instead.
Standing above her, her weak fragile body lies. Standing over ‘me’,... with a knife.. Suddenly she pushed me over. “Why are you doing this? I am only trying to save you!”, I shouted.“You are future me, are you not?”, the girl laughed. “Isn’t it that girl, she hasn’t ever left her bed?”“It’s very rare to see her outside..” “Poor girl.”
“Look, at all the tasty food, this place has! Isn’t it?” She shoved one in my mouth, it was delicious….She dragged me along with her.. Happily running around..the hospital...Then, I remembered...“Stop it, I don’t have time for this!” Time is slowly running out.. “But even so…” She turned away from me. “I’m sorry, but no.. I don’t want to die, no, not just yet.”
So if you could, please grant my wish… oh- spirit ?
“Well, I guess it can’t be helped, right?”, he smiled at me. The past me.
“Wait- Wait! What about my wish’!?! There were a clear line between the two wishes.--”No..Stop it….
… I don’t need your pity,
.. I don’t need your kindness….
“How can you still smile at me, like that?”
The girl flinched, as the boy tried to hold her in his arms, trembling from the shock a red string appeared attached,
“Wha-..”
“Shhh….”
“Everything’s going to be okay.” A finger over his lips...with a creepy smile. Was what he had told me. Wish upon a star. “Ah... looks like you’ve ran out of time.”
“I’ve. lost.. It. time.” Acid, tears ran over her delicate face. There was no possible way to turn back. correct?”
“Hey…...” Like reading strings that hold our bonds, never touching, or he’ll fade away someday. “What is it that you what from me?” “Your heart.” he answered back.
“Why? I cannot allow you to.”
Wasn’t it the world that was breaking?
Wasn’t it the world that made a mistake?
You really are an idiot,
For forgetting the blueness of the sky.
You’re the one who had made a mistake,
You’re the one that was breaking...
And... you were the very one that was waiting.
About a month ago on April 23rd, just past 2 pm. Two hikers picking mountain vegetables..found a man’s body here at Tauka Swamp. Because he had been stabbed in the chest with a sharp knife, they ruled his death a murder. However, despite a few days passing since he was murdered, and him having no cellphone or ID, They were able to identify him immediately. Yoshihara Hiroo, 35- year old. Who worked for a large construction firm. Eventually, a 30-year-old woman was arrested as a suspect. Tinai Ao.
“It was me.” In which they have gotten a confession from her. While many unanswered questions remained. They are still working mainly in gathering the evidence needed right now. An open and shut case. They assumed she threw the body into the swamp to hide it, or to perhaps delay its discovery.
The girl asked, to prove her point…..
I must get a statement that I am satisfied with….
The incident was about a woman who had murdered her ex-boyfriend’s coworker and had dumped a body in a swamp up the mountains in the large pond. Apparently her coworker “Hashira '' had a dispute with her ex-boyfriend about the company. He planned out Kuji’s death by suicide with his current wife, where they could’ve died together, in love. Before, this though, his former wife, when he had asked to die together, left him. Kuji always had a problem with his job, he had hardships. He believed that this was caused by the incident 5 years ago and called
Kuji’s brother, but he didn't pick up. He knows where Kuji’s former wife lived and came into contact with her to apologize 5 years ago. But, instead of the first approach must’ve caused the women to be paralyzed. Killed him, because she felt that Kuji’s was correct… The women were quick to confine in her murder. And told them she threw the body in there for a man-eating girl spirt to eat.
Why would she not have placed any weight on the dead body, if she had tried to hide it?
She did it for you, for the spirit girl to find and eat it...
That explanation is still unclear, many left unsaid….Why must she say “I really hope they find you.”
Of course…
5 years ago, there was a legend, a legend about the ‘goddess’ of rain…she is usually seen by the river, sitting alone, in a white yukata with black short straight hair, bangs, with no eyes, since they were gouged out. There are two ways you could ask for the ‘rain’. She, the goddess of rain, despite her name, she had no control over the waters. One was to pray. The other is an offering, to offer a body, a corpse for the spirit girl to eat, but this legend was disputed, as the girl no longer eats humans, they tasted terrible to her. But, there was a set back to this, to offer a dead corpse, it must be in good condition, a young girl rather than an old middle-aged man. Instead, the women dumped the corpse of an old middle-age man in the river. Her coworker came over to admitted he had killed Kuji and his wife,
Why would there be rain?
Yes, indeed…
My lady, you are quick to deny your claims…
There should’ve been something really precious left from her former husband but after he had moved on with another woman she had moved out of her house and job in the city into her family home alongside where the spirit lived. She had moved to destroy all her relations and items from Kuji. Yes, it is possible for some to have kept a few gifts.
She called Kuji’s brother over, afraid of Hashirama's wrongfulness. Afraid of this, the middle-aged coworker came over. Where Kuji’s brother had met face to face with his brother’s killer. Out of anger, he had openly pulled out a knife and stabbed the co-worker. In realization of this, the woman could not bring herself to accused Kuji’s brother of his murder. She felt this was the only way she could repay him. And so, the brother flawed and she was left with the corpse, where she carried him into a halogen and carried him up the mountains at night. To throw his body down.
There would be no way, young women would go through the hardships of carrying a dead corpse up to the mountains, why would she speak of to find it over wards? The women’s relations to him, no mere someone would?
She had to get rid of any traces of his dead body in her home, she cleaned everywhere, every inch of her house, but, what about the outside? She had realized there was no way to clean the outside, rain... She needed rain.
The rain had caused people to not have discovered the corpse sooner for a few past 2 days. During those rainy days, the women must’ve come to check, only to find that the body has not been eaten, she figured that they wouldn’t have liked to eat metal or any accessible trash left behind beside the flesh so she removed his cellphone and ID, which she could’ve possibly buried back in her home.
This was where you were enraged...and it started to rain…
The woman, she spoke that she had thrown a murder weapon in the river. For the spirit to eat, there was no guarantee, by saying this, this made the police cover her sanity still more, leading in discovery in finding the weapon. That weapon was no mere weapon, instead, it was a fetus from her former husband. In realization of this in the past 4 years ago, that she was pregnant with his child, she made an attempt to dispose of the baby, she handled this all by herself, it was time when she had gone into labor, blood on her hands everywhere. All by herself, she threw the body down the river, that was until she had found out that her former husband was innocent… but it was already too late, she threw their child away. She tried to look for it, the sad corpse of her child. Although it has been 4 years already, her feelings are overweening.
That is yet why she had said: “I really hoped they find you.”
It was not the body that she wanted to find.
A single fetus corpse is yet too small to be found, adding that it was 4 years ago…. One person wouldn’t have found this body all herself, so instead, she used the same idea, taking this chance, she disposes of his body into the river. For an investigation.
Keeling down… I highly doubt that they would find the fetus underground...
“Very well, case closed.
You are really a spirit of worthy…. Riyin”
“Humans…
They really are such undoubtedly foolish but pitiful creatures, aren’t they?”
Dressed in a white yukata, with black strings thrown around the dress of the sleeves. A white spirit's symbol on her head. White triangle. And, on her left cheek, a covered up bandage. Straight short black hair with bangs.
she smiled and let out a small chuckle…..
“Of course, We’ve used to be one too..”
I felt something soft intertwined in my hands, I looked down, and he did too. Our hands clasped together,…. “
Hey… let’s stay together… forever..”
qwq
Looking up at the bright lights of the crownless night, we laughed.
Red string, red thread, will stay.
Surely,.... It will… ,right?
It was one of those moments again. One where he didn't know if he were fantasizing or awake, nor if reality was real or imaginary. He couldn't tell if time flowed or not, because this innocuous world of imperishable oblivion seemed perpetual and ephemeral all at once.
"I'll-I'll find it! The green string!?I promise!"
No truth, no lies. No beginnings, no endings. The world was colorless, as always. He was standing upon a desolate sandhill beside the ocean, where the sea of nothingness melted seamlessly into the dreary sky and they were one and the other. Gray waters reflected pale clouds, mirroring the vapid gray fog that smothered the air.
It took him a moment to realize that the miasma was a plume of smoke, an ominous pillar of darkness surging towards the ashen sky above.
A single spark of color ignited the monotonous world, and the acrid aroma of scorching charcoal became nearly suffocating. Something was burning.
The water had become fire.
Somewhere in the near distance, someone —— no, many people, were screaming, crying, pleading. He couldn't tell exactly where, decipher exactly why. He winced to make it stop.
Instead, the hellish cacophony became louder, closer, deafening. Then, through the thick fog, he saw her. Standing atop an ebony rock with her back turned where fiery seas met calm, stagnant gray waters, oblivious to the morbid scene unfolding before him.
She spoke to herself, her voice soft as it gradually fallen, pouring down like hails from the sky,... “Hey….. promise me… that , you won’t leave me alone.. In this world? in a distance from him.
Could you do me this one favor??” She’d asked. Was she mad, angry perhaps?
Ah- but where are you going to find it? There is no such thing as the
Yellow, Blue, or Green string,
It was all a lie,
. . .!
There is only red,

“I am tired… Of running In a circle.”
“The weather’s nice today as well, we gather around and stare up at the clouds.”
My soft vocals echoed through the silent park. I occupied the bench, swinging my legs back and forth. My eyes averted to many things; the tiny pile of snow, the green grass, the trees.
"These lazy days it's hard to tell, we close our eyes and fall down to the ground." The birds chirped along with the tune. The trees remind me of a certain person. Trees are natural. They stay still and strong against the cold. I let out a faint giggle.
"A distant blurry memory, those days long gone seem so hard to recall," My eyes shifted back to the ground. I thoroughly scanned it. My eyes glistened. Spring has started a few days ago and this is the first flower I see. I got up from my seat and approached it.
"'Cause time goes on relentlessly, we've grown too old to see it all." I stopped walking. The scene in front of me was a blue morpho landing on the flower. I silently took a step back. If I get any closer, I will end up disturbing it.
"We played with fake maturity, made secret plans just to burn out the day." After a while, the butterfly flew away. I rushed to the flower and picked it up. I walked back to the bench and took a seat.
"'We fight this war eternally,' and join our hands just to find our own way." An idea sparked in my mind. I plucked each petal along with the beat:
"He loves me... he loves me not... he loves me... he loves me not..." After a while of plucking, I ended with a; "He loves me not." My happiness level lowered. I let out a sigh.
Suddenly,.... I heard someone
"Hey..." I felt a hand land on my shoulder. I flinched. I swiftly turned and slapped the hand off me. I met eyes with one of my few friends, Xeiv.
"S-Sorry about that..." I apologized.
"There's no need to apologize. I would probably do the same thing." He sat down beside me.
"So what are you doing out here alone?"
"It's early spring. I'd rather be one of the first people to see spring without the falling petals." I answered as I fiddled with the flower's stem.
He gave me a small smile.
"That's oddly specific." He commented.
"W-Well, what brings you out...?" I felt myself tremble.
"I needed to blow off some steam after what happened to... Satoru... and I heard singing. Normally I would ignore it, but it sounded an awful lot like you." I let out a nervous chuckle to his answer.
My nails were piercing into the flower stem. He looked down at it. "What's that for?" My face transitioned into a light shade of red.
"Oh, it's..." My voice began to trail off. "Well, do you know that game where you take off a petal one by one?" He nodded his head.
"Well, I was doing that." I was trying to be honest with him. After all, he doesn't seem like a person who would care to dig deep.
"Oh really? What are the results?"
"The feelings haven't returned." My face saddened.
"That sucks... but it is just a game. You can't just simply rely on it."
"That's true..." My face changed to a darker shade of red. It appears that another idea popped up in my mind.
"Hey... can I do something real quick?"
He looked puzzled. "Umm... sure?"
I scooted a little bit closer and pecked his cheek. "I-I'm sorry..." I apologized as I covered my brick-red face.
"I-It's perfectly fine..." Judging by his voice, he was losing his composure. I felt his hands hesitantly removing my palms that covered my face.
"Was that supposed to be a confession?" He interrogated. I slowly nodded my head. I felt his arm wrap around my waist. It pulled me closer to him. I heard him softly spoke, "Then I accept."
We watch together as beautiful flowers began to wither.
--Author’s note: “when red string gets entangled” is a novel mainly based on the term ‘love’ interest] Also if you are unable to understand what has happened over these text, yes, it is delierberatly meant to make no sense at all, but that is- the beauty within words. These were cases that were solved by my two characters 'Riyin’ and Xiev who were pulling these strings. As always, Thanks for reading!

The Height Of Summer (9)
Summary: She’s a whirling dervish, and he’s trying his best to keep up.
Warnings: some angst and some fluff, what else is new.
Words: 3327
A/N: sorry for the long delay - i graduated uni and started working full time in the world’s most soul sucking corporate job that drained me of all inspiration and joy. Don’t worry though, i quit it without having anything else lined up (i’m v v worried lmao). Anyway, here’s some stuff.
The Series: Chapter 1, Chapter 2, Chapter 3, Chapter 4, Chapter 5, Chapter 6, Chapter 7, Chapter 8, Chapter 9, Chapter 10
Chapter 9 - Summer
“No, listen, hear me out - what I think we really need is Netflix or HBO to get on making a full Harry Potter show. Just throw a bunch of money at it, make a bunch of seasons, follow the books with absolute anal precision -”
“Aw, Jack, why’d you have to say it like that!” Paige exclaimed, throwing the pillow she’d been leaning against, at Jackson’s head.
“I absolutely agree,” Shawn said sincerely, cradling his guitar on his thighs with his fingers hovering over the strings, “give it the Game of Thrones treatment - could you imagine? I’d never watch anything ever again.
“You gotta pull some of your Hollywood strings, Shawnie,” Eli laughed, throwing a wink at Shawn.
“I’ll make sure to get my people on it,” Shawn winked back.
Summer smiled as she leaned her head back against his knee, basking in the laughter and chatter between her friends. They had all piled into her room after getting back from the picnic, all sunburnt and in good spirits. Paige, Molly and Eli had spread themselves out on her bed, Jackson was sitting in the alcove of her window, Shawn was lounging in the armchair next to her bed, and Maya was sitting curled up on Lewis’s lap on the other armchair. Summer, ever the generous hostess, had opted for the floor in front of Shawn. She rather enjoyed her position, as it allowed her to affectionately lean her head back against him, and she was almost certain she felt his fingers play with her hair absentmindedly when the others were talking, and nobody was looking their way.
“Okay but the most important question is what house everyone is in,” Lewis piped up, which was met with excited exclamations and laughter.
“I don’t think I even know what the houses are,” Molly said, pulling a face.
“I don’t either, babe,” Maya laughed in solidarity.
Lewis looked at his girlfriend with abject horror scrawled on his face, “Right,” he said matter-of-factly, “that’s it, we’re breaking up,” as he pretended to push her off his legs, catching her from falling at the last minute and pulling her back into him. Looking at them made Summer wish she could relocate into Shawn’s lap and wrap her arms around his neck and press her face against his.
“Well I’m definitely a Slytherin,” Paige said proudly, flicking her hair over her shoulder.
“Don’t we know it,” Jackson laughed, grinning as he rolled his eyes.
A sharp tap against the window pane sliced through the chatter and laughter, and the group exchanged confused looks with each other.
“Did you hear that?” Eli asked, brows furrowed.
“Is it raining?” Summer replied, looking at Jackson who was sitting in the alcove, his figure outlined by the dimming evening light.
Jackson craned his neck upwards to look for clouds when another sharp rap against the window rang out, and his head snapped downwards immediately. There was a pregnant pause as his hand came up to cup around his face to help him see out better, and then, “Um...Summer, you might want to go down.”
“What?” She replied, frowning, but her gut was starting to twist itself in knots as suspicion krept up on her.
Jackson turned around to look at her, and she didn’t miss the way his eyes darted to look at Shawn for a second, before returning to hers. In the beats of silence that passed, the tension she was radiating seemed to become palpable and she wished with her entire heart that he wasn’t about to say what she thought he was about to say.
“It’s Jesse, he’s downstairs,” Jackson said, stabbing into the anticipatory tension, and then, as if it couldn’t possible get any worse, he added, “throwing rocks at your window”.
A shiver ran up her spine and she was suddenly extremely aware that all eyes were on her, but most of all that Shawn’s eyes were on her and the feeling of her side resting against his legs suddenly seemed hard and uncomfortable and it made her feel sick. Jesse used to throw rocks at her window as a romantic thing, it was their little inside joke, to make her feel like she was in some sappy romance film. It was a rock thrown at her window during a weekend away at the cabins that had first brought them together, under the veil of darkness and shrouded in the secrecy of being with her brother’s best friend. It was the sign that they could be together, just the two of them, and sneak away from the company of others. And now here he was throwing rocks at her window when she thought they had found some closure that same morning in the kitchen.
She wasn’t brave enough to look at Shawn as she stood up, confusion and shame and anger and anxiety all fighting for dominance in her stomach.
“I”ll be right back,” she said as she slipped out of her bedroom door, stopping to take a big breath in the hallway as she closed it behind her. She could hear the faint exchange of whispers amongst her friendship group and she wondered what they were saying, but most of all she wished she knew was Shawn was thinking.
Trying to sort out her inner thoughts and figure out what he wanted and what she could say to Jesse, Summer slowly descended the stairs and excited the cabin. She found him kicking at the dry grass and dirt below her window, the same way she had found him on countless other nights just like this one and she couldn’t help that her heart clenched a little at the sight. Glancing up to her window, she saw her friends peering down at her and Jesse, but Shawn didn’t seem to be with them.
“Hey.” She said, pulling the sleeves of her hoodie over her hands. “What’s up?”
Jesse looked up at her and shifted uncomfortably, fiddling with another small stone he was holding, “Hey, sorry about-” he said, showing her the rock, “I just wanted to talk but I didn’t want to barge in, when I saw Jack in the window I figured you had your friends round and stuff.”
“So you thought the best solution was to throw rocks at my window?” Summer hissed at him, crossing her arms.
Jesse shrugged, “I don’t know, it’s just the first thing I thought of.”
Summer rubbed her hands over her face in frustration, “What could you possibly want to talk about now, you already barged in at the crack of dawn this morning to have a conversation and I thought we said what needed to be said but now you’re throwing rocks at my window like nothing ever changed between us.”
“I guess for me it just doesn’t feel like that much has changed.”
“Jesse you broke up with me two years ago. You did, not me. You don’t get to-”
“No hear me out,” Jesse interrupted her as he took a step forward. “You know I still love and miss you, I told you as much this morning, and I get that this is all my fault and by God am I happy you’re happy and doing well, which is why I just wanted to make clear that I am doing well too and I hope someday soon I will be okay with what I did to us, to you. But I want you to be happy because I still love you.”
“Jesse…”
“No listen, please, I was watching you all day today and I get it now. You’re happier now, happier than you ever were with me I think.”
“Jesse, come on now, that’s not true,” Summer said softly, taking a step towards him, wanting to comfort him and those sad ocean-blue eyes she had loved so much for so long.
“ I think it is, though. You and Shawn - you never had that shine in your eyes when you were with me.”
There was a long pause where Summer tried her best to process what he had just said to her, and then she remembered how happy she had been with Jesse and tried to compare it to how she felt around Shawn, and she struggled. They were two completely different things, two completely different boys - men, in fact - and also two completely different Summers.
She swallowed, her heart breaking for Jesse, even though he had been the one to break hers. “I don’t…” She struggled to find the words to explain how she was feeling, especially how she was feeling in regards to Shawn, and to find the words that wouldn’t cause any more hurt than necessary. “Shawn and I...well I don’t exactly know what we are at the moment, but I don’t want you thinking you didn’t make me happy Jess.”
She saw him swallow as he looked away into the darkening forest, his fingers still fiddling with the little black rock like it was a poker chip. “I hope I did make you happy, Sunny,” he said quietly, hesitantly using his nickname for her for the first time since the breakup. “But it’s not about happiness, I can’t explain it really, it’s just different the way you look at him. It’s like you are the sun and he is the moon.”
“That is so cheesy,” Summer said, closing her eyes as she tried to repress a smile.
Jesse laughed quietly, dropping his head, “I know,” he said, shrugging, “I just don’t know how to explain it. You just light up in a way you never really did with me.”
“But I loved you,” Summer said, suddenly feeling a little offended, as if he was undermining how much she had been in loved with him. She had always felt she had given her all to Jesse, thrown herself into everything they were together, and here he was standing in front of her telling her she looked more in love with someone she had known for hardly any time at all compared to how long they had been together.
“I know you did,” Jesse replied quickly, reading his hand out as if to touch her, but then pulled it back as if he thought better of it. “And I always felt that, your love, and I felt how much I hurt you when I did. But I mean when you’re with him...it just looks different, I don’t know, it looks right.”
“Right?” Summer frowned at him. She knew he meant well but he was also digging himself into a hole that she didn’t much appreciate. “So you think we didn’t look right?”
She knew she shouldn’t have said that as she watched Jesse’s face fall. In her heart she knew what he had meant, but it still grated on her and she couldn’t help herself.
“No, of course I think we did I just, what I mean is, if that you look really complete when you’re with him.”
And there he went again, digging himself into that hole she really wished he wouldn’t. Summer’s eyebrows flew up and before she knew what she was saying, the words had already left her mouth in a hushed rage, “Jesse Sullivan if you think I need a man to complete me, or try to imply in any way that I am in some may incomplete or broken then you have a new thing coming.”
“Of course not, come on Sunny, please you’ve got to know what I mean. All I’m trying to say is that I won’t try and interfere or win you back or do all the things I really want to do because I can see that I can’t compare anymore and that is alright, and I will be alright.”
Summer took a deep breath, her frustrations deflating with each word he spoke. “And will we be alright?” She asked, looking up at him.
“Yeah, I think we will.” Jesse responded softly, tentatively pulling her into his chest and Summer allowed her arms to wrap around his broad frame as he rested his chin on top of her head.
She breathed into the hug, noting how he still smelled like the same Axe body spray he’d used when he was fifteen years old and half a foot shorter. Some things would never change, but one thing that had was that instead of craving his familiar smell, she now longed for the subtle scent of Shawn’s cologne and spearmint gum. Turning her head to the side, she moved her eyes up to her bedroom window, but found it empty with the lights turned off. She wondered if Shawn had ever come to the window, or if he had left her and Jesse alone once again. She felt Jesse press a kiss against the top of her head and she knew it was time to part, more certain than ever that it wasn’t his arms she wanted to be held by.
---
As predicted, her room was deserted when she returned, her hands still balled up nervously into her sleeves. She looked at the armchair that Shawn had been sitting in and swallowed. Slowly she backed out of her room, closed the door quietly behind her and walked to the end of the hallway where she stood outside of Shawn’s room once again. This time, unlike the night before, Summer knocked. It was soft but sure and she hoped more than anything that he would be there to open it and welcome her in.
A split second later the door swung open, as if he had been standing waiting for her on the other side.
“Are you alright?” he asked, and Summer lunged forward, wrapping her arms around him. “Hey…” he said softly, returning the hug and pulling her into the room, kicking the door closed behind her, “Hey, are you alright?”
Summer nodded against his chest, eyes closed tightly as she tried to hold back tears. She didn’t even know why she was one kind word away from bursting into tears, but she was so glad that he was there to open that door for her, to pull her in and to hold her. That faint smell of his cologne, that she had become so fond of from the first time she sat on his lap at the house party that seemed a million worlds away now, filled her brain and wove its way around her heart.
Before she knew it, Shawn was sitting on the bed with her cradled in his arms like a small child, her arms still wrapped around him and her face pushed into the crook of his neck. The faint sound of the crickets chirping outside and Shawn’s steady breathing were the only things Summer could hear and it felt like they were the only two people in the world.
“What happened?” Shawn finally asked, breaking the silence. He sounded hesitant and tense, like he was worried about the kind of answer she would give him and not for the first time did Summer feel guilty for pulling him into this situation.
She shrugged, pulling away to look at him, “Nothing really. He just wanted to make clear where we stood.”
“And where do you stand?” There was that tense anticipation in his voice again, and it made her heart rate pick up.
Summer forced herself not to break eye contact with Shawn, her dark blue eyes meeting his brown ones, darker than ever now that the sun had finally set and the only thing illuminating the room was the pale glow of the moon.
“He’s not going to try and get back together, he wants me to be happy...he’s happy for us.” Summer replied, the last part barely over an audible whisper, unsure of what Shawn’s response would be. It was once again another implication of what they were, when that had never really been established, both of them knowing how different their lives really were away from the cabins and in the reality of their respective careers.
“We’re an us?” Shawn asked, leaning back against the headboard, his hands slipping down to her hips.
It wasn’t exactly the response she’d been hoping for, there was no big smile or a passionate kiss, only a question. Summer swallowed, it was now or never. This conversation was bound to happen, the alternative was leaving it a forever open-ended question mark that would eventually allow them to drift apart without explanation or commitment. “I’m happy for there to be an us if you want there to be an us,” she said, sending the ball back into his court as she held her breath for his response. Her heart was beating so fast she was worried he’d be able to feel it.
Shawn just looked at her for a long time, which did nothing to calm her nerves, but his hands stayed on her hips and she thought that that at the very least was a good sign.
Finally, one hand lifted as he ran it through his thick hair, and Summer didn’t dare move an inch for fear of interrupting his contemplation. “Um,” Shawn started, barely looking at her anymore and her heart started to drop into the pit of her stomach. Suddenly she wished she’d allowed the question mark to keep hovering for a little while longer. “I would like there to be an us,” Shawn said, but Summer felt the inaudible pressure of a ‘but’ hovering between them.
She looked at him and wanted nothing more than to reach up and touch his cheek, slightly flushed from sunburn or stress she couldn’t tell. She wanted to kiss him, to erase the tension and show him how good an ‘us’ could be, but still she didn’t dare move. The hand remaining on her hip gave it a light squeeze and she couldn’t tell if it was accidental or not.
“But it’s going to be hard,” he finally said, looking at her again with worry etched across his face. “It’s going to be so hard on you,” he went on, “so much harder on you than it will be on me I think and I don’t know if I can do that to you.” Shawn bit down on his lip and Summer felt the beginnings of tears sting at her eyes once more.
“I’m a big girl I think I can handle it,” Summer replied, trying her best to keep the tremble she felt in her throat to leak into her words.
“You’re very small,” Shawn laughed, moving both of his hands up to her waist and giving her a very purposeful squeeze, “but I’ll believe you can handle it if you say so.”
And with that her heart swelled three sizes and she returned his wide grin, balling the fabric of the hoodie he was wearing into her fists excitedly. Shawn leaned forward and gently pressed his lips against hers and it was like a whole new box of fireworks was let loose in her stomach all over again. It was only short and sweet, but it was perfect, and when he pulled away it was so minimal that their proximity remained intimate, his nose pressed against hers, his lips brushing hers, his spearmint breath against her. “Summer?”
“Hmm,” she hummed contentedly, closing her eyes to hold onto the moment between them and the feeling of his hands on her and his gentle voice cradling her name.
“Do you want to be my girlfriend?” -

Can you write something about Hilda finding out about Spellwood?
Thanks Anon for the prompt! Sorry forthe delay getting back to you. Hope you enjoy 😊 read on ao3
They usually didn’t indulge in these typesof activities, but in the year since Constance and the twins’ deaths, Zelda foundherself wanting, for the first time, more out of a relationship than sex.
So, when she realized the Spellman housewould be empty—Ambrose out with Luke and not likely to return til dawn, Sabrinahaving a girls night with Roz and Susie, and Hilda at work— she’d been emboldenedby the thought of an uninterrupted night and invited Faustus over for dinner andmaybe some ‘dessert’ if there was time.
Faustus agreed readily and even listedoff meal ideas so quickly Zelda wondered if he’d been dwelling on wanting more too.
When he arrived later that night, hekissed her chastely on the lips and moved further into the house, arms ladendown with bags of food and wine. She’d teased him, claiming Hilda kept awell-stocked kitchen, but he just grinned and murmured something about notmessing with another cook’s kitchen and started to unload.
He did most of the cooking, thankfully,Zelda had always been hopeless when it came to preparing food—which was why sheleft it to Hilda if they wanted anything edible at meal times. She helped though, cutting up vegetables, pouring wine, warming the bread in the oven… pouringwine.
They enjoyed a lovely dinner, conversation flowing easily from topic to topic and after doing the dishestogether, they retired to the parlor. Wine in hand, Zelda lit the fire with a flickof her wrist before curling against Faustus on the couch as one of her oldrecords played in the background.
Time passed wonderfully slow, they laughedand talked quietly, fingers tracing along one another absently. Zelda couldhave spent the whole night like that, pressed against Faustus’ side, just enjoyingand soaking in his company. When the record turned over, though, Faustusgrinned, put his drink down and pulled away from her.
“May I?” He asked, uncharacteristicallyplayful, holding out a hand to dance.
Smiling, Zelda knew they were bothmore than a little buzzed to be doing this but found she didn’t care, andhappily nodded before taking his hand.
Faustus swooped her up into hisembrace, one hand resting firmly on her lower back while the other engulfedhers. She couldn’t hold back the low chuckle that escaped her, and she restedher forehead on his collarbone to hide the delighted flush blazing across hercheeks, certain it would give away all her feelings. When she mustered the courageto bring her eyes back to his, she was stunned.
The tender way he gazed at her, theway his fingers traced little patterns on her back, it was unexpected and delightful, and she did nothing to acknowledge it except bring her free hand from hisshoulder up to the back of his neck to play with the short hairs there.
They continued to dance, the spacebetween them dwindled to nothing and their hands came to rest in far more intimatelocations as the songs slipped from one to another. It didn’t take long untilthey were just swaying in place, eyes flicking to one another’s lips repeatedly.Zelda couldn’t say with certainty who moved first, but their lips met in a softkiss.
It was different, just as this wholeevening had been. The kiss was unhurried, gentle and so far from their normalpairings that Zelda couldn’t help but sink further into it. Faustus made apleased sound deep in his throat in response and a hand slid up her back andburied itself into her hair.
They were just pulling back to repositiontheir mouths when a loud gasp sounded from the doorway. Zelda made to jumpback, break all contact, but Faustus held her tight, entirely unembarrassed bythe fact Hilda had caught them snogging like teenagers.
Her sister stood in the door, in thatridiculous costume of hers, eyes wide, hands on her hips and an eyebrow raisedin question.
Clearing his throat, Faustus droppedthe hand from her hair and let it rest on Zelda’s other hip. “Sister Hilda, Iwas just—”
“Oh, I know what you were just.” Sheinterrupted, using a tone and eyeing the high priest in a way that mortifiedZelda. Honestly, one would have thought excommunication would humble her sisterfurther, not bolster her outrageous behavior.
“Hilda—” Zelda exclaimed aghast, trying to extract herself, unsuccessfully, from Faustus’ embrace.
But her sister was already leaving theroom, waving her hand. “You two wait here, I’ll be right back.”
Dumbfounded, they just glanced at oneanother, frozen. Then Zelda collected herself, “you need to leave before shegets back.” She whispered urgently, trying to push him away.
“I believe she specifically told us”he murmured dipping his head to kiss her neck, “to stay here.”
Scoffing and finally freeing herself,Zelda paced away, spinning her rings agitatedly. “Since when does the high priesttake orders from anyone but the Dark Lord himself?” She asked in a haughtytone, needing to regain some kind of control over the situation.
He just smirked before wrapping hisarms around her again. “It seems I have a weakness when it comes to Spellmanwomen,” he teased, capturing her lips once more. And it was another one of thoselanguid kisses that had her melting and forgetting about everything around her…including the fact that Hilda was coming back.
A cough announced her sister’s presence.Hilda chuckled as she entered the room again, this time in normal clothing. “Ididn’t expect you to actually listen, and I certainly didn’t expect to find youkissing again.” She remarked, smothering a smile poorly.
Smoothing her hair back, Zelda movedaway from Faustus and sat on the couch. “Yes, well, some people are morepersuasive than others,” she quipped, shifting on the cushions as Faustus satnext to her, slipping an arm around her waist, and Hilda perched herself in anarmchair across from them.
Ignoring her, Hilda focused herattention on Faustus. “I take it you’re in a relationship now?”
Zelda blanched, “we’re not mortals thatneed labels—” She quickly moved to dismiss the notion, though she did want aformal relationship, she wasn’t going to let Hilda expose that vulnerability.
However, before she could finish, Faustusspoke up. “Yes.” Zelda’s head snapped to look at him, her mouth slightly openin her surprise.
Hilda nodded but narrowed her eyes, “areal one? You’re not going to continue to be a voracious slut?”
“Hilda!” Zelda gasped, but Faustusjust laughed.
Removing his arm from her waist,Faustus leaned forward. “Sister Hilda, I am as insatiable as ever. But yoursister is the only one I seek out or wish to have fulfill my needs. And she hasbeen the only one for quite some time now.”
Clearly flustered, Hilda sniffed andglanced away for a moment, apparently, not expecting such a bald reply. “Well, good then.” She managed, rather red in the face but soldiering on towardswhatever her goal may be. “I should warn you though—”
“That you’ll hex and curse me intooblivion should I hurt her?” Faustus supplied, tilting his head in curiosity atwhat the younger Spellman might do.
Making a dismissive gesture, Hildaleaned forward as well and gave Faustus her sweetest smile. “Oh no, Blackwood,my sister could and would handle that by herself, as you well know. But cursesand hexes only last so long, can be removed. No, if you hurt her, my revengewill be slower, more subtle.” Her smile widened just a tad, so it bordered onmanic instead of sweet, though her voice remained its usual light and cheerytone. “At first it will just seem like a string of bad luck, you wouldn’t putit down to any common cause. A broken mirror here, a dead crow there, importantdocuments missing, a case of food poisoning. But then it’d change, trouble sleeping, rashes no potion can abate, hair loss, a toothache… and you’d start to wonderif it was my work.
“Perhaps you’d search your house, youroffice, the church, trying to find my charms and spells, but you wouldn’t, I’mtricky like that.” Hilda’s smile expanded more, and Zelda sat back, her sister’sexpression terrifying even her. “And when you don’t find anything, you’d start todoubt I’d done anything at all. Start to believe I was all talk. You might evenconvince yourself of that. But the bad luck would continue and build and worsenuntil you search your things again, trying to find my charms and you still wouldn’tfind them… if they were ever there to begin with.” She added slyly, cocking herhead, smile still in place. “But if the charms weren’t there, why all theproblems? And if they were, why couldn’t you find them? This cycle of doubt anddesperate searching would continue until you’d driven yourself quite mad.” Hildasettled back into the chair, conjured up a glass, and poured some wine from thebottle they’d abandoned. “This is the revenge I promise you, Faustus Blackwood,a slow descent into madness. Never knowing what I have or have not done to interferewith your life to make it miserable. Wondering for the rest of your life ifevery little thing that went wrong was me or just karma.” She lifted her glassto him in a mock toast and took a long drink.
Zelda and Faustus sat speechless, mouths open in astonishment. Zelda was impressed and touched Hilda had anentire revenge plan, and such an intricate one at that, in place should Faustushurt her. She hoped Hilda would never need it, especially knowing now thatFaustus considered them to be in a real relationship.
Regaining himself first, Faustusnodded. “Understood, Sister Hilda. I have no intention of hurting Zelda.” Heplaced a hand on her knee and squeezed. “In fact, now that we are no longer hidingthis from you all, I am hoping I might steal her away more often.”
Shrugging a shoulder, Hilda tookanother sip. “That’s not up to me, but to Zelda. But you’ll have to discuss itanother time, I need a word with my sister.” She looked at Faustus meaningfullyand to Zelda’s continued bewilderment, he stood, kissed her briefly on the lipsand bade her goodnight before teleporting away.
Blinking, Zelda returned her attentionto Hilda. “How in Satan’s name did you manage that?” She asked, looking back tothe spot Faustus had just occupied.
Looking immensely pleased withherself, Hilda giggled. “I don’t know, I didn’t think it would work.” Shegrinned excitedly and squirmed a little in her seat—the intimidating aurasurrounding her before completely gone.
Zelda stood and made to go upstairs, needing to process everything that occurred in the past few hours. But Hilda’shand on her arm gave her pause.
“I do want to talk to you, Zelds.” Shemurmured, seriousness smoothing out her giddy features a little.
With a curt nod, Zelda resumed herseat on the couch, “what would you like to discuss?” She asked curtly, eyebrow raised.
Pressing her lips together, Hildalooked at her earnestly. “Are you happy, Zelda?”
Scoffing, Zelda shook her head. “Whatkind of question is that?”
“An important one. Are you happy with Blackwood?”
Licking her lips, Zelda sat up straighter.“I, he, we… yes.” She managed, dropping her eyes from her sister’s. “He makesme immensely happy and that terrifies me. Because I want more and tonight, tonighthe stated we were in a relationship and it was more and different and I wantit. Badly.” The words came tumbling out before she could stop them, to cover thisZelda snatched up one of the remaining wine glasses, not even caring if it’dbeen hers or Faustus’, and slugged back the rest of the contents.
Hilda beamed at her, “Zelds, this islovely!”
“Is it? Because I feel anxious all thetime.” She countered, spinning her rings again and avoiding eye contact.
A sympathetic smile curled Hilda’slips and she moved to sit on the couch next to Zelda. “That’s normal, Zelda. You’ve got something and you’re afraid to lose it.”
Working her jaw for a moment, Zeldabrought her gaze to Hilda’s, “and how do I keep from losing it?” She whispered,as if saying it quietly would negate that she’d uttered an insecurity out loudin the first place.
Her sister set down her wine andpulled Zelda into a hug. “You’ve kept him this long, just keep doing whatyou’re doing, be yourself… he clearly loves that. And, in any case, he should bethe one concerned with keeping you.”
Sniffing, Zelda returned the hug brieflyand then pulled away. “Thank you for your advice sister,” she murmured, standing. “And,” a wicked smile touched her lips, “thank you for threateningthe high priest with such a glorious form of torture for me.”
Preening a little at the compliment,Hilda stood as well and looped her arm through Zelda’s, leading the wayupstairs. “It was quite fun,” she admitted, a giggle escaping her again.
Shakingher head, Zelda smiled and together the sisters trooped upstairs to bed.

Carried Away Chapter 47: Darkness and Light
Masterlist
Lucy was packing her bag to go home after spending the weekend with her family for Easter, when her mother knocked lightly and entered the room.
“Hey, mom.” Lucy said, not looking up from arranging her suitcase.
“Luce, we need to talk.” She said, sitting on the bed, and patting the spot next to her, indicating Lucy should sit too. “We’re worried about you. We don’t like seeing you like this. You’ve been short with everyone this weekend, and we tried to be understanding, but the kids don’t understand why auntie isn’t playing with them.”
“I’m fine mom.” Lucy defended. Her mother gave her a raised eyebrow, but didn’t say anything. “I am. I just...I just feel so stupid. At first I was hurt by Henry’s words, but now I just feel stupid. I actually thought a guy like that would love someone like me. I was living in a fantasy land.”
“Honey, I have no doubt that Henry loved you. The way he looked at you when you weren’t looking, the way he looked after you. You’d make an off-hand comment about something, and he’d make it a reality. But sometimes love isn’t enough. What’s that line from that movie you watched over and over in high school; the Cinderella one?”
“A bird may love a fish, but where would they live?” Lucy recited, and gave a small smile.
“Exactly. So please don’t think that Henry didn’t love you. But relationships don’t always work out, no matter how much we’d like them to.”
“Thanks mom. I’m sorry I’ve worried you guys.”
“Honey, that’s what family is for.” Marie smiled, embracing her daughter tightly.
Over the next weeks, Lucy employed a “fake it til you make it” attitude. She projected a happier demeanor, and in turn started to feel better, by infinitesimal degrees, but better nonetheless. She wasn’t sleeping well, when she slept she dreamt of Henry, but she slowly began to re-enter her life as an active participant.
Luckily for Lucy, April was a hectic month. Prom planning was in full swing, and the kids were driving her nuts with details. They kept her so busy that she could fall into an exhausted sleep so deep that she didn’t dream. By the time prom week actually rolled around, Lucy was thinking she might actually survive the school year intact.
While Lucy was finding her way to the light, Henry was sinking deeper into the dark. After finding Lucy’s letter, he started to withdraw from everyone. Before finding the letter he had himself convinced he was doing what was best for Lucy. She could forget about him, and eventually find someone else to fall in love with and marry. But now he wanted nothing more than to lock himself away where he couldn’t hurt anyone anymore.
Unfortunately, his life would not allow him to become the hermit he so desired to be. He was a successful actor with a movie to be released soon. Dany had, after discovering his schedule suddenly wide open, scheduled him to several entertainment magazine interviews, radio interviews, and entertainment blog interviews. Normally Henry actually enjoyed doing press for his films, it gave him a chance to show his personality, but he couldn’t seem to find the energy to be charming.
After the third in what was to be a string of interviews, Dany came to the hotel suite he was living in.
“Henry, what’s wrong?” She asked, brushing past him into the room.
“Hello to you too Dany.” Henry said to the air.
“Henry, I’ve gotten complaints from the editors of both the interviews you’ve given that you’re not answering questions, you’re uninterested, and I caught that radio interview this morning. I’ve never known you to mumble, but I could barely make out a word you said. So I ask you, what is wrong with you? Is this some sort of delayed reaction from your break-up with the teacher? You were fine a month ago.”
“I’m just not feeling the interview circuit right now.” Henry replied, looking out the window.
“Well, you better start feeling it. Someone from the studio caught your radio interview today, and they’re not pleased. You need to put more effort into being your regular charming self, or the studio is going to take action.” She threatened.
Henry did eventually start to “play nice” at the interviews, but refused to “play the game” as Dany called it. He didn’t go out and “be seen,” he had no desire to go to the clubs and parties and make small talk with people he barely knew.
He kept Lucy’s letter in his wallet. He read it every night before laying down to stare at the ceiling. He couldn't sleep. Images of Lucy crying kept him awake. He turned to whiskey and beer to dull the pain of knowing what he’d thrown away.
Dany Garcia stared at the glass doors in front of her. If she wasn’t positive that this would help, she wouldn’t have flown and driven herself across the country to this middle of nowhere town. Now here she was, staring at a small school with students streaming out the front door. The littlest ones wearing backpacks bigger than themselves. The oldest carrying maybe a book and a jacket. It was late April and 55 degrees, she was freezing, and these kids weren’t even wearing coats. “Minnesota is such an odd place,” she thought to herself.
She was happy to see she’d timed it right to arrive at the end of the school day. It would give her time to talk to Lucy without many interruptions. She entered the building, checked in at the office, and was directed to Ms. Claussen’s room.
She followed the directions and found the room easily. The door was open. Dany looked in and saw Lucy sitting at her desk. She was surprised at the changes she noticed. This was not the same happy, smiley woman she’d met in January. This woman had dark circles under her eyes, and a frown on her face. Even her hair seemed duller than before. Dany knocked on the door, as she walked in.
“Un minuto.” Lucy said without looking up, continuing to type at speed on her keyboard. When she finished, she looked up expectantly “What’cha need…” she trailed off seeing Dany standing in the room. “What are you doing here?” She asked coldly.
“I’m here on behalf of my client.” Dany said, slowly walking toward Lucy’s desk.
“What? Does he want the earrings back that he gave me, or the necklace? He can have them, it’s costing me a fortune to insure the damn things. It’ll take me a day or so, I don’t have my safe deposit box key with me.” Lucy said, her anger starting to build.
“No. I’m not here to get back any presents.” Dany said confused. “I came to see how you’re doing.”
“I’m fine. Tell your client,” she practically spat the word, “that if he wants to know how I’m doing, my phone number hasn’t changed.” Dany was confused by Lucy’s tone. She seemed angry simply hearing about Henry. Something wasn’t adding up.
“He doesn't know that I’m here. I came because he’s hurting. He’s been in a very bad place since you two split. He’s been fulfilling all of his contractual obligations, but people are noticing that he’s phoning in his appearances. I think you’re the solution to his current ennui. I came to see if you would be willing to take our boy back. He hasn’t been the same since the split. He’s in Los Angeles right now, Can I book you a ticket for this weekend?”
“Are you shitting me?” Lucy asked incredulously, standing to look the woman in the eye. “Now, Ms. Garcia. I understand that your loyalty is to your client, but honestly, what kind of woman not only suggests that another woman get back together with a man who broke her heart, but suggests that I chase after him to beg him to take me back. I may not be some millionaire Hollywood starlet, but I do at least have my pride.”
Dany’s head spun. It was all starting to come together now. “He broke your heart? Are you telling me that he broke off the relationship?”
“Yes. He told me one day out of the blue that our ‘lives were too different, that this couldn’t work’ then he picked-up his bags and left. I haven't heard from him since.”
“That’s very enlightening. So the break-up was not your idea.”
“Isn’t that what I’ve said?” Lucy asked caustically, losing what little patience she had remaining.
“But you still love him. Would you consider taking him back?”
Dany watched as the woman in front of her deflated, losing all of the fire that, just a second ago, had been directed at her. Lucy leaned forward, bracing her hands on her desk, her head dropping.
“Dany, yes I loved him. But as I said, he broke my heart. I’m not sure I’m willing to put myself through that pain again. The whispers are just starting to die down, I’m sure they’ll pick back up when the next round of interviews and TV appearances start. My life hasn’t changed, and it isn’t going to. I’m a highschool teacher. I live in Minnesota, and I’m very close to my family. What I had with Henry was great, but I don’t know if my heart could survive if he decided that we weren’t compatible again. Now, I’m sorry you came all this way for nothing, but I don’t think I have anything else to say to you.”
“Well, thank you for even speaking to me. Good luck with everything Lucy.” Dany turned to leave. She had just reached the door when Lucy asked quietly.
“How is he?”
“He’s miserable.” Dany said plainly.
“Well, that makes me feel a little better.” Lucy smiled tremulously.
Dany’s head swam with the new information she’d acquired. It would seem Henry had not been honest with her. On her way out of the building, a flyer caught her eye. She took one, forming an idea she hoped would work.
Dany stayed in Minnesota that night, before flying back to Los Angeles the following morning. When she arrived, her first stop was Henry’s hotel room. She knocked, and received no reply. She knocked again, and still got no response. She decided she’d try one more time, before getting management to let her in. Just as she was about to turn from the door, it swung open. Henry stood glaring at her through bloodshot eyes from under a three day growth of stubble. “What?” Was all he said.
“Good morning to you too.” She said cheerfully, pushing past him into the room. It was dark, and stank of stale beer and staler man. He followed her into the room and shrank back as she opened the curtains to the bright California sun. He sat on one of the couches holding his head.
“Why don’t you tell me why the hell you’re here, so I can go back to bed.”
“Henry, it’s 2:00 in the afternoon. You don’t need to go back to sleep.” She crossed the room to him and raising her hand, smacked him in the back of the head.
“What the bloody hell was that for?”
“You’ve been lying to me. I don’t like being lied to.”
“What are you talking about?”
“Well, you’ve been moping around this hotel room for 2 weeks, only coming out to grumble your way through an interview. The studio is breathing down my neck to get you to shape-up. I needed to do something. I’ve spent the last 24 hours flying and driving, hoping maybe your teacher could cure this funk you’ve fallen into.”
“You saw Lucy? How is she?” Henry interrupted her.
“Yes, I saw her She told me to tell you she’s fine. Though she’s obviously not. I don’t think she’s sleeping much. But I was less interested in her appearance, than what she told me. She told me that you broke up with her. Now how can this be? If you were the one to break off this relationship, why the hell are you so miserable?”
“I love her. Loved her.” He corrected himself. “I’m not allowed to mourn the loss of a love.”
“Of course you are, but you told me that she was the one who instigated the break. If you still love her, why the hell did you break-up?”
Henry wasn’t in the right mindset to argue, so he told her the truth. “Dany, you should have seen her in the classroom. She’s a natural. She was in her element. The kids love her, and she genuinely cares about them. And with her family. They’re so close, and she loves them so much. She told me her niece and nephew are her world. How could I take her away from all of that, because if we got married, I’d expect that she’d move to London with me, it’s where I’m based. So I gave her some line about our lives not being compatible, which is really the truth, and I left her.” Dany watched his face fall even more as he recounted the whole situation. She smacked his head again.
“Henry, Henry, Henry. You stupid man. Did you ask her what she wanted? No of course you didn’t. You just unilaterally decided that this was the way it had to be, and that was that. Tell me, have they done away with all of the schools in England? Do phones no longer do video chat? Do phone lines not reach across the ocean? Have you fallen into some sort of financial distress that I’m unaware of that would make flying from London to Minnesota impossible?” Dany berated him, making his entire decision seem insane.
“I just want her to be happy.”
“Well, she’s not. And neither are you. You need to talk to her. Tell her what you just told me. If you both decide then that you’re not meant to be, then so be it, but give the girl a chance. She’s a strong modern woman. You could do a lot worse.”
Henry leaned back on the couch, his hands running over his face. “Dany, don’t you think I know that? She’s amazing and I let her go.” He picked up Lucy’s letter from the bedside table and handed in to Dany. “I found this in my suitcase when I was home for Easter” Henry stood to look out over downtown Los Angeles, his eyes staring unseeing into the distance while his agent read the words Lucy had written.
“What conversation is she talking about?” Dany asked.
“I asked her to marry me.” He said quietly.
“Say again. You what?!” Dany asked, sure she’d heard him wrong.
He turned from the window to address her. “Christmas Eve, I asked her to marry me. She said no. Her reasoning was sound, she thought we didn’t know each other well enough, but it still hurt me. The longer I stayed with her in Minnesota, the deeper I felt myself falling. I started to actually think about what being married would mean. And what if I asked her again, and she turned me down again. I don’t know if my heart could handle that.” he explained, his voice strained with emotion as he sank onto the sofa.
“Henry, that’s what love is. You’re giving someone else the power to hurt you, and then trusting them enough not to. Do you still love her?”
“Of course I do.”
“More importantly, do you want to be with her?” Dany asked, sitting down next to Henry.
Henry met Dany’s eyes, “more than anything.”
“Then you’re going to have to do something. She still loves you.”
“What time is it? I’ll call her.” He said, hope entering his eyes. Dany smacked his head again.
“Would you stop hitting me?!” He exclaimed, rubbing his head.
“When you’re done being stupid, I will. But you’re being stupid again. This isn’t a conversation you have over the phone. You have to have this one face to face. And honestly, with the way you’ve acted, you’re probably going to need to do some groveling in order to get her to even talk to you.”
“My schedule is booked for the next week at least.”
“I have an idea about that.” She said producing the flyer she took from the school. Henry’s face split into a grin which Dany hadn’t seen in far too long.
Four days after her unexpected visit from Henry’s agent, Lucy was up to her ears in hairspray, tulle, and glitter. The culmination of her students’ entire year of planning had arrived, prom.
“Emma, thank you so much for being my date for the night. We need all the chaperones we can get.” Lucy said, straightening a young man’s bowtie.
“Of course, you know I love the kids, and it’s fun to see them outside of school. How are you holding up?”
“I’m exhausted. We decorated all day here yesterday, then last night at the hotel. But after tonight it’s all over.”
“No, I meant how are you doing?”
“I know you did, I’m fine.”
“It’s been almost 8 weeks, honey. I’m worried about you.”
“I was actually doing fine, if you remember, then that woman had to show up. But worry about me tomorrow. Tonight, we need to keep this herd of animals off the booze and off each other.”
The students all gathered at the school to participate in Grand March; a chance for the community to see the students in all of their finery. Just before the event was set to begin, Lucy changed into her Starry Night dress, slipped the opal earrings Henry had given her into her ears, and fastened the necklace around her neck. She couldn’t help but recall the last time she’d worn these jewels, and how happy she’d been. She had debated whether or not to wear Henry’s gifts, but Emma had insisted she wear them. How many opportunities would she have to wear something so extravagant, and while the jewelry was a bit over the top for prom, it made her look sparkly on the outside, even if she didn’t quite feel sparkly on the inside.
Lucy took her place behind the podium on the stage in the gym, the spotlight all but blinding her. She cued the student sound tech backstage to start the music that had been chosen to announce the couples. The students walked to the center of the stage, meeting in the middle, then descending the stairs to the gym floor together. They paraded in front of the crowd stopping frequently for photos.
After the Grand March concluded and pictures had been taken, the students boarded busses for the 20 minute ride to the local hotel whose ballroom was serving as venue for the dinner and dancing portion of the evening. Lucy ensured that all the students had exited the busses before mounting the stairs to the second floor ballroom. She found all of the attendees standing on the stairs.
“Why are we just standing here? Let’s get this party started.” Lucy cheered with false excitement in her voice.
“Ummm…Ms. C? There’s someone here that wants to talk to you.” One of the students called from the front.
What now, was all Lucy could think. Was the hotel mad they’d taped decorations to the walls? What could possibly need her attention right now?
She worked her way through the throng of kids to the top of the stairs, and froze. There stood Henry, in a suit, holding a bouquet of tulips. Lucy was speechless for a moment before she felt a hand on her shoulder. Ryan gave it a quick squeeze. She closed her eyes, took a deep breath, and collected herself. She turned to the students standing expectantly behind her.
“Ok, so you all, go into the Ballroom. Mr. Williams, would you please take care of...whatever needs to be taken care of. I’ll be in when I can.”
“You do what you need to do, we’ve got this.” He gave her shoulder another reassuring squeeze before leading the kids into the ballroom. Henry waved at a few of the kids that acknowledged him, while her drama students gave him an exaggerated cold shoulder. Lucy noticed more than one phone pointed in Henry’s direction, this was going to be all over Instagram in under 3 minutes. Emma came to stand beside her.
“What do you think he wants?” Lucy asked, panic starting to build in her voice.
“I don’t know. But he’s got your favorite flowers, that’s always a good sign. Hear him out though. Men are stupid, and sometimes it takes them a while to realize they've been stupid.”
“Whose side are you on?”
“I’m on your side, and you’ve been miserable for 2 months. You owe it to yourself to hear what he has to say. Then if you’re not satisfied, you can kick him to the curb, and at least get some closure on this relationship.”
Once the lobby area had cleared, Emma entered the ballroom shooting icicles at Henry the entire way, and Lucy finally approached him. She crossed her arms over her chest to keep her hands from shaking.
“What are you doing here?” Lucy asked expressionless.
“I came to see you. You look amazing. You’re wearing my earrings.” He said, reaching out to touch her. She evaded his hand, he pulled it back as though he had been burned.
“What do you want, Henry? I’m working.”
“Is there someplace we can talk?” He looked around.
“I don’t particularly want to talk to you right now, or ever really.” She said turning to walk to the ballroom.
“Please, hear me out. Will you just listen to me?” He asked grabbing her arm.
She looked down at his hand, then back to his face with a look that could freeze boiling tea. He let go. “If I let you talk, will you leave? Leave me to work.”
“Yes, if that’s what you want, I will go, but please will you listen to me?”
“Fine.” She stalked in the direction of the hospitality room the school had reserved to store decorations and prizes. She opened the door and entered, not waiting to see if he was following.
She stood in the middle of the room, and looked at him expectantly. “Well.” She said in the teacher voice she’d used the first day they met. Despite his nerves, Henry couldn’t stop the small smile from crossing his face. The ice that entered her eyes froze his smile before it could grow.
“I love you.”
“You love me?” Lucy asked incredulously. “You have a funny way of showing it.”
“Would you let me talk? Lucy. I love you. I know what I said, that our lives weren’t compatible. And really they’re not, but I was only thinking of myself. I started thinking about a real future with you, then I saw how you were with your students, and your family, and...I just couldn’t live with taking you away from all of that. I love you too much, and want you to be happy.”
“So you broke-up with me? How exactly was that supposed to make me happy?” Her words were angry, but she could feel her heart starting to melt infinitesimally.
“In the short term, it wouldn’t. But I thought you would find someone whose life is more like yours. Who you could be with and stay with your family, and your students.”
“Henry, yes, I love my family, and I love teaching, but none of that would change if I didn’t live here. There’s video chats, and phone calls, and airplanes.” Whose side was she on? Lucy asked herself. She was supposed to be angry, not explaining how they could be together.
“Dany, said all of that and more. She called me stupid, and she hit me.” He gave a short laugh at the memory.
“Well, you deserve it.” Lucy replied, a small smile cracking the icy mask of her face. That small crack gave Henry’s spirit the lift he needed.
“Lucy. I love you. Please can you give me another chance? I can promise to love you more than I’ve ever loved anyone or anything else.”
“Are you going to talk to me? Or are you going to make decisions that affect both of us?”
“We’ll talk. I’ll never leave you out of any decision making process that would affect both of us,” he promised. “But you’d take me back?” He asked, hope shining across his face.
In response she opened her arms, leaned into him, and sighed. He wrapped his arms around her in a lovingly crushing embrace that Lucy felt gluing the pieces of her broken heart back together. She pulled away slightly to look up at his face. He brought his hands up to cup her face and brought his lips down to hers. God he had missed her. Her lips were warm and welcoming, it was like coming home. He felt he could stand there forever, just drinking her in. When he pulled away, to rest his forehead against hers, they were both breathing heavily. He lowered his head to kiss her again, when she put her finger to his lips.
“Don’t think this means all is forgiven. You’re on probation.”
“Of course.” He agreed, trying to kiss her again and she evaded.
“You need to answer a question for me.” She demanded very seriously.
“Anything.” He replied getting worried.
“Did you sleep with that actress you were dating?”
Henry’s relief was so complete he released the breath he’d been holding on a laugh.
“That wasn’t real. That was set-up by our respective publicists. We spent maybe three days together, nothing more than holding hands for the paparazzi. She needed some good press, and we thought it would do me some good to be in the papers as well.”
“I was so hurt when I saw those pictures. I was trying to avoid any sort of entertainment news, but it’s everywhere. I felt like I didn’t really mean anything to you, that you could jump into a new relationship so quickly.”
“I’m sorry it hurt you. If it makes you feel better, I was hurting on the inside just as much. I’ve missed you terribly.” This time when he leaned down for a kiss, she met him halfway, running her hands up his chest to loop around his neck and bring him closer. He lowered his hands to her hips, tugging her closer to fit against him. Henry broke free from the kiss, only to begin raining kisses along Lucy’s jaw and neck. Her head lolled back on a moan.
There was a brief knock on the door, before it swung open. Emma entered. Lucy and Henry jumped apart like guilty teenagers. Lucy blushed adorably. “I take it this means you’re taking him back?” Emma asked sardonically looking from one to the other then back again. “I should be upset that my date is making out with somebody else, but I think I’ll get over it. Are you going to come chaperone this event, miss class adviser?”
“Oh god! What are the kids going to think?” Lucy asked covering her face with her hands.
“Well, I’ll tell you, you’re definitely the talk of dinner. It’s almost time for our table to be served, if you want to eat.”
“We really should get out there.” Lucy said starting for the door, when Emma stopped her.
“You’re going to want to put yourself back together. You’ve been in here for almost 20 minutes. You can’t go out there looking rumpled. Take a minute. I’ll be outside.” And she exited.
Lucy turned to Henry and laughed. She walked over to him, swiping her thumb across his lips, and coming up with a sample of her lipstick. “You straighten yourself, and think cold thoughts. I’ll put myself to rights in the bathroom.” Lucy gazed at her reflection in the mirror. Her makeup was smudged, and her hair had come half down from it’s pins. She righted it, and her face before exiting.
“Come on, honey, let’s get going.” She said extending her hand to him.
“You want me to stay?” Henry asked.
“Oh honey, of course you’re staying. First of all because I want you here, but second this is part of dating a teacher; attending events like this. Consider this part of your probation. And by the way, you’re going to dance with me. And if any of my girls ask, you’ll dance with them too. You’ll take as many selfies as the kids want. This is their night. Prepare to be a chaperone.” She laughed, taking his hand and leading him to the ballroom.

Tsurune Book 1 Chapter 1-Yata no Mori (Part 2)
Not going to lie but this chapter nearly drove me crazy with the kyudo terminology. Luckily, there’s a lot of information in English about kyudo online (and surprisingly a lot in French as well) so I just want to give a huge hand to the people who share their kyudo knowledge online in easy to understand ways, you’re the real MVP.
I highly recommend opening the chapter in two tabs and scroll down to the translation notes at the bottom if you can since a lot of words won’t make sense if you don’t know what they mean. I’m still searching for a convenient, non-intrusive way to write the notes so if anyone has any ideas, let me know.
Also I think I’m going to go on a break after this (yeah even though I promised to post this a lot sooner) cuz I’m still a little burned out from DIVE!!. I just hope the anime doesn’t air before I actually finish this book lol
Translation Notes
1. The Raiki Shagi and Shahoukun are two important ancient texts in modern kyudo. They are written in the front of the Kyudo Kyohon and provide a lot of the philosophy behind Kyudo.
2. Yoshimi Junsei is a famous archer of the Tokugawa Period (1603-1868) who wrote the Shahoukun.

What was that?
Who was that?
He thought back to that breathtakingly beautiful shooting, and Fuu’s deep black eyes.
He tried searching online, but couldn’t find any search terms to enter. The kyudojo of Yata no Mori didn’t have a website, only having its name entered in a list of all the kyudojo in the prefecture. And because of the Personal Information Protection Act, the identity of the person who owned it could not be disclosed either. In that case, he should have asked the man for his name. But, what would he do if he did asked for it?
Minato was heading for the school’s entrance to go home after school. It was bright outside the open windows, and he could hear the sounds of people going to club activities. When he narrowed his gaze on the still distant sunset, the wind died down.
Then, his shoulder was grabbed from behind again. I guess I don’t need to check to see who it is anymore.
“…Ryouhei.”
“ ‘Sup Minato. What are you so dopey about?”
“Do you know how big you’ve gotten? You’re heavy.”
“Sorry, it’s just a habit.”
While apologizing, his hand remained on his shoulder. The other hand was waving at the people passing by.
Since elementary school, Ryouhei liked to join shoulders with other people. Minato disliked being clingy with people, but when he saw Ryouhei’s smile, he couldn’t turn him down, so he left it as it was. Even during the several times when Minato and Seiya fought, Ryouhei would squeeze between them and join shoulders, saying with teary eyes, “I get sad when you guys fight,” and then it became impossible to get angry. Minato had a bad feeling as he felt the similar emotions from those times.
“Isn’t it too early to go home? Let’s go to the kyudo club’s information session together.” Ryouhei said.
Minato replied without a moment’s delay, “No. I’m not going.”
“Alright, then at least listen to some of the information. Tomi-sensei has back pain so he can’t do the practical skills, so it looks like Seiya will be demonstrating them.”
“Ryouhei, did Seiya bribe you to do this?”
“It’s not like that. But, he told me to tell you this: ‘If you don’t come today, then I’ll never let you see Bear again.’ Did they finally start to keep a bear over there? Sweet.”
No, that’s really not something to be impressed about, Minato quipped in his mind.
“For me, Seiya’s the sage, and you’re the hero. You have a heroic saga too, don’t you? Hey, do you remember what happened on our kindergarten trip?”
“Trip? Oh, the one where the hornet landed on my arm, and I kept walking without shaking it off? But, that’s not a big deal. Even though the hornet kept approaching me, the teacher warned me repeatedly not to kill it with my hands.”
“That’s not it! It’s the one where you barehandedly caught the crayfish that I couldn’t touch. When I saw that, I was like, ‘This guy is cool!’”
Minato was completely drained, and placed his hand on his knee.
“Ryouhei, we aren’t in kindergarten or elementary school anymore.”
“How’s that different from being in high school?”
Ryouhei’s innocent gaze pierced Minato.
Minato was an only child, but he was got the illusion that the naughty younger brother, who had always followed behind him, had suddenly matured.
“Actually, when I was in the second-year of middle school, I accidentally saw you drawing your bow. When I saw that arrow firmly hitting the target, I was so excited. I thought that I want to draw like that too. I want to do kyudo together with you and the others—. You said that you were busy with chores at home, so I gave up the other day, but I guess if Seiya and I cooperate we’ll manage somehow? It took a lot of trouble to meet you like this. Just try to listen to the information first. And then can you make your conclusion?”
“Ryouhei, I’m…”
“I want to do kyudo with you…is that no good?”
Ryouhei’s ears seemed like they were drooping down dejectedly. Minato was never good at handling his juniors.
“…All right. But I’m only listening.”
Ryouhei’s face lit up. He couldn’t understand why Seiya involved him into this, but he couldn’t refuse that face. Minato hung his head in shame at his weak-minded self.
At that time, Seiya headed to the kyudojo with Tomi-sensei before everyone else.
Kazemai High School’s kyudojo was located inconspicuously in a corner of the schoolyard. For kinteki (close-range) tournaments, the range was twenty-eight meters, with room for six people to draw at the same time. Though it wasn’t being used, it was well maintained, thanks to Tomi-sensei’s hard efforts bringing in senior citizen personnel during spring break. Seiya only resumed breathing when his hand traced the nameplate that read “Kazemai High School Kyudo Club.”
They bowed once as they entered the kyudojo, and then went ahead and bowed twice in front of the kamiza. Being barefoot is strictly forbidden in the kyudojo, for the same reason entering someone else’s house barefoot is impolite.
To prepare the kyudojo, first apply water to the azuchi (target bank), and then place the targets with their centers twenty-seven centimeters above the azuchi. The targets used were kasumi-mato (mist targets), which were targets with a diameter of thirty-six centimeters where black concentric circles were drawn.
Next was preparing the kyudo equipment. The arrows were placed in the yatate-bako (arrow stand), and the bowstrings were stringed onto the bows. The height of the ha—the distance between the bow’s grip and the stringーwas about fifteen centimeters. There were dedicated tools for measuring that height, but Seiya measured it using his right thumb and said, “This is fine.” Then he went on to rub “ma-gusune” on the string. He did this by applying kusune, which was a boiled mixture of pine resin and oil, onto a small waraji woven from hemp strings, and then using it to neaten the loosened string by fusing it with friction. The saying “to be ready and waiting for (te-gusune o hiku, 手ぐすね引く)” definitely came from kyudo, but the use of kusune was different.
After he got that far, he changed clothes. Shooting a bow right after stringing it was a cause of bow damage, so it was necessary to make it adapt ahead of time.
Seeing Seiya turning towards the makiwara (straw practice targets), Tomi-sensei spoke.
“Oh, Takehaya-kun, where are your glasses?”
“I use glasses because I have dry eye, but I only use contacts when I’m drawing a bow. Before, the bowstring would get caught on my glasses and send them flying.”
“The lenses cracking would be pretty shocking. But, when people who normally wear glasses take them off, do you think it’s okay to be so defenseless?”
“I am seeing perfectly now. I am completely prepared for the attack, far from being defenseless.”
“I say, that’s frightening.”
“Tomi-sensei, thank you for inviting me to the kyudo club. I’ll definitely make your mission a success..”
“I’m counting on you. Fu-ho-ho!” Tomi-sensei laughed.
To Seiya, Tomi-sensei was a happy miscalculation. Before the entrance exams, he had already investigated that the Kazemai High School Kyudo Club was on the verge of disbandment. Minato probably knew that as well. So, he planned to revive the kyudo club with his own hands.
A favourable wind was blowing.
In order to stand at that place once more—.
Seiya encouraged himself, as an unseen power pressed against his back.
On this day, an information session titled “Introduction to Kyudo” was scheduled, and people began to trickle in. Probably twenty or thirty people of mixed genders. For the boys, their goals weren’t just being introduced to club activities.
“Don’t you think kyudo girls are hot?”
“Yep.”
However, with the entrance of one attention-attracting boy, the boys’ ambitions were abruptly destroyed.
“Sorry I’m late. Thank you for preparing everything.”
When greeted with cries of “Nanao-kuuun!” from the girls, he made peace signs with his hands and waved at them. They then exchanged incomprehensible greetings of “Merha~” “Merha~.”
It was a boy with bright, somewhat unruly hair, and who seemed like his whole body was shining beams of light. He was swinging a quiver in his hand, which was more a “pearls before frogs” accessory than “pearls before swine.”
Seiya set his bow down, and waved Nanao over.
“You’re Kisaragi Nanao-kun, right? My name’s Takehaya Seiya, and I’ll be with you today, nice to meet you. The frog on that quiver is pretty funny.”
“Oh, this is nice, right? Right now my room’s full of frogs. Oh, you can just call me Nanao.”
“All right, please call me Seiya as well. By the way, what was that ‘Merha’ you said just a while ago?”
“It’s short for ‘Merhaba.’ It’s Turkish for hi.”
While wondering why Turkish, Seiya let it pass. This was probably the reason why he was popular with girls. It wasn’t a type you saw much among boys who did kyudo.
When he picked up his bow and quiver, another person who didn’t seem to belong in a kyudojo appeared.
It was a boy with healthy, suntanned skin. Because of his sharp eyes, he was more a wild person rather than a refreshing sports boy, and a somewhat hard-to-approach aura floated around him. Even the girls who surrounded Nanao quickly backed away to surround him from a distance.
“Nanao, don’t block the entrance. Let me in right now.”
“Ehh, Kacchan, you’re so impatient~”
“Stop calling me Kacchan.”
“But aren’t you Kacchan, Kacchan? I can’t call you anything else at this point.”
“This sucks, having to be in the same high school as you, and then in the same club.”
“Aren’t you joining the soccer club? Didn't the guys in the soccer club ask you ‘What position did you play in middle school?’ on the first day?”
“I’m not joining the soccer club, I’m set on the bow. I’m different from the guys who started kyudo just to wear a hakama, like you.”
“I look pretty cool in a hakama. Of course, it’s not for show. Today, I have to show the girls my charming figure. That’s why, Kacchan, you should work hard too.”
“The only one I don’t want to be told that by is you.”
Noticing Seiya being taken aback, Nanao formally introduced him.
“This here’s Onogi Kaito. My cousin.”
“Onogi-kun, I’m Takehaya. Nice to meet you.”
“…I’ve seen you at a match before. What’s your middle school?”
“Really? It’s a private school, so it’s not around here, and I don’t think you’d recognize the name even if I told you. But putting that aside, I want to start soon, so the two of you should go change your clothes first. I’ll keep your bow strung.”
Kaito looked like he wanted to say something, but he entrusted his equipment to Seiya and headed for the waiting room (hikae shitsu).
The first round of Introduction to Kyudo has begun.
Seeing Minato and Ryouhei among the gathered people, Seiya murmured, “Ryouhei, good job.” under his breath.
Tomi-sensei cleared his throat.
“Everyone, relax your feet. This is a good gathering. It seems that I’m popular. I’m blushing.”
A laughter that said “That corny introduction is enough, so please quickly get on with it” rang out.
“Well then, first, some requests. Kyudo is a martial art. You need to respond with spirit. And then, this is essential, but if you nock an arrow to the bow, you absolutely cannot point it at other people, even as a joke. Even if you did not intend to release it, it can lead to a serious accident. Also, absolutely do not take the arrow off the bow to 'dry fire' it, as there’s the danger of snapping the bowstring. You must always obey these rules.”
And then, they chanted in unison the “Raiki Shagi” and the “Shahoukun” (1) that were printed on the right hand side of the kyudojo (TN: this is called wakishoumen or position where one is facing the kamiza and the targets are to the left). The former began with “The shooting, with the round of moving forward or backward can never be without courtesy and propriety. After having acquired the right inner intention and correctness in the outward appearance, the bow and arrow can be handled resolutely,” an inscription mainly preaching the ideals of kyudo. The latter began with “The way is not with the bow, but with the bone, which is of the greatest importance in shooting,” written by Yoshimi Junsei (2), and was mainly the dying instructions of his technique.
Tomi-sensei asked one of the students in the front row, “Do you understand the meaning?”
“No, not at all.”
“I was also completely clueless about what was written in the beginning. But as I kept practicing, I thought that 'Oh, this is what that was talking about.' You can look forward to that as well.”
“Yes, sir.”
“And, this is also a breath control technique. As reading out loud is a way to continuously exhale, this action will enhance your parasympathetic nerves and relieve tension. A good presence of mind is essential for drawing a bow. Isn’t it hitting two birds with one stone to learn the essence of kyudo and do breath control?”
“I seeee.”
The voices were overlapping each other.
It was Ryouhei’s and Nanao’s. Nanao had at some point sat down next to Ryouhei, and they were giggling as they looked at each other. Minato and Kaito, who were on both sides of the two, had sour looks on their faces.
Tomi-sensei held up the kyudo equipment.
“There are three main equipment necessary for kyudo. The bow and arrow, and the ‘yugake’ (archer’s glove). It is a glove made of deer skin used for protecting the hands. Most students use the three-fingered yugake. Now, let’s see the actual shooting technique. Tournaments are done with three or five people. Today we’ll have three people.”
Seiya, Kaito and Nanao got up. At that moment, a visitor came and informed them that sorry for the interruption, but Nanao was being summoned over the school PA system.
“Really? Did I do something? Sorry, Tomi-sensei, but I have to leave for a while. If you like, please replace me with someone else.”
Tomi-sensei looked around when the girls said things like, “Eh—, if Nanao-kun isn’t going to draw a bow then should we just go home?”
“Well, there was another person with experience here. What’s more, he’s a good-looking guy. Narumiya-kun, you can choose to change into a hakama or not, just try drawing the bow for a little bit.”
After a pause, Minato exclaimed, “What!?”
“I can’t. I haven’t held a bow for more than half a year already.”
“I just want you to show everyone how it’s done. The equipment is borrowed, so everyone naturally understands that you won’t be able to strike well. Everyone wants to see him shoot, right?”
Because they all applauded at once, Minato was cornered into a hard-to-refuse situation.
While waiting for Minato to get ready, the others were touching the kyudo equipment. Tomi-sensei and the others moved to the wall.
Kaito took an arrow and approached Minato.
“Since it’s troublesome to have the bowstring caught on your buttons, change into a gym uniform and put on a chest protector (muneate). What was the draw strength of the bow you used? Hold out your left arm so I can do the yazuka measurement.” (3)
“Hey, hey wait a minute. I never said that I was going to draw it. Right, I heard that Ryouhei also drew a bow in class when he was in middle school.”
“Even if he did it in class, it was still dangerous. Plus, Tomi-sensei said that it’s natural that you won’t be able to hit anything, and nobody cares about your skill.”
“It’s not that, it’s not that at all…”
“This is getting annoying. Just do the one or two things you’re asked to do. Aren’t you ashamed to be not much of an archer?”
Minato became speechless at the word “archer.”
Kaito took that as acknowledgement, and used Minato’s throat as a starting point to verify the length of the arrow. If it was too short, there was the danger of accidental discharge when the arrow was pulled towards the inside part of the bow.
Seiya stood next to Minato.
“Let’s trying shooting at the makiwara first. If that seems impossible, you can decline. Though the club has some as equipment, what will you do for the yugake?”
“…I’m fine.”
“All right. It’s a waste of time to go back to the classroom to get your gym clothes, so I will lend mine to you.”
Minato changed into the t-shirt and jersey, and took out the dragonfly-patterned pouch from his bag. Inside was a well-used yugake. The other day, when Seiya had said that he was carrying around a treasure, he was referring to this.
There are people who think that when shooting a bow, the end of the arrow was pinched and pulled back, but in fact, the thumb was used to hook the bowstring and pull it. Minato used a three-fingered kataboushi yugake (4), and the groove at the base of the thumb where the bowstring is hung from was called the tsurumakura. Since the position and form differed slightly depending on the yugake, it was difficult to use something unfamiliar. “Kake gae no nai” (5) was an expression that came from kyudo, with the “kake” meaning yugake.
Minato put on his shitagake (under glove) and yugake, applied giriko (glove powder) to his middle finger to prevent slipping, making a squeaking sound.
As he stood in front of the makiwara, his heart was striking the alarm bells. Although he never failed to do muscle training and rubber bow practice, this was actually the first time in a while that he had held a bow. The anxiety of not knowing whether his movements were correct or not grew stronger. However, his body moved by itself, and before he knew it he had already nocked his arrow.
He performed gyousha (7). He carefully drew the bow back to its limit. When he drew the bow back to its fullest position, “kai,” Minato counted.
One, two, three, four, five—.
The arrow left Minato’s hand, and hit the center of the makiwara.
When he set down his bow, Tomi-sensei called out to Minato.
“Ooh, you have a beautiful form. If that’s the case then you’re fine.”
Minato tightly pressed his lips together, and took out the arrow embedded into the makiwara. When he exhaled on his shoulder, Seiya, who was watching attentively from a little distance away, also sighed heavily in the same way.
Once they finished preparations, Seiya, Minato, and Kaito lined up at the entrance in that order. It was the beginning of nyuujou (entering the dojo).
They bowed, then moved forward with their feet scraping the floor. They turned towards their respective targets, and then briefly sat down and gave a shallow bow. Their lined-up position at this moment was called honza. When they stood up, they got into the position for shooting and then sat down again. This position was referred to as shai, the position where one shot from their sitting position was called “zasha,” and the position where one was always standing was called “rissha.”
As the three of them nocked their arrows together, Tomi-sensei began to explain.
“As you can see, aren’t they nocking two arrows? Those two arrows are called ‘hitote,’ shot in the order of haya (first arrow), and then otoya (second arrow). First up is Takehaya-kun. The first person to shoot is called the ‘oomae.’”
When he was called, Seiya stood up with his nocked bow. He spread his feet, set the bow on his left knee, and removed his right hand from around his waist. With that as his cue, Minato, who was second, also stood up, and followed Seiya’s movements.
Seiya took the bowstring with his right hand, gripped the bow with his left, and faced the target again. He raised both arms in front of his body, slowly bringing the arrowhead to the center of the target. The exact moment when the bow was taut was the highlight of kyudo. The cross shape formed by the person and the bow conferred a pleasant tension to the viewer, and of course the person themselves.
One, two, three, four, five—.
It hit the center. An ooh sound went up.
With Seiya’s tsurune as a signal, Minato got his bow into the uchiokoshi position. Everyone thought that Minato’s arrowhead would slowly approach the center of the target as well.
However, the arrow left Minato’s hands early, not aimed at the center of the target at all, and it landed a great distance before the target. “Before the target” meant the right-hand side, and “behind” it meant the left. Since the arrow was released at a speed as though he was startled out of his wits, the kyudojo became noisy in an instant. Some people were looking at each other with expressions that said, “What was that?”
Tomi-sensei spoke playfully, “Were you nervous so many beautiful ladies here? Whether you hit or miss, having a poker face is one of the basics. It is courtesy with regards to others to not show emotions. Unlike archery, you can gain a point just by hitting the target anywhere. You only either hit or miss. Well then, the person who goes last is called the ‘ochi.’”
Kaito should have used Minato’s tsurune as a cue to get his bow into the uchiokoshi position, but he had to be told to do it. He drew the bow to its limit, and waited for the moment of hanare, but the arrow missed the target.
In the second round, the arrow that Seiya released went behind the target. Having finished shooting the arrows he had in his hand, he began the process of taijo (exiting the dojo), but Minato didn’t move. The raging palpitations of his heart, and pulsations at the back of his neck were deafening. He cautiously got his bow into uchikoshi, and seemed to be drawing it close to the target on the lawn, but he couldn’t breathe.
I can’t let go, I absolutely cannot let go—.
Minato repeated that many times in his heart. He pulled the arrow to half of its length, and then tried to draw it even wider from there, but the arrow flew out again while he was doing that, and it went high above the target, hitting the curtain that was covering the azuchi.
In the end, Kaito managed to hit the target, and it ended with a total of six shots, with two targets of 1:0:1.
“It’s more difficult than it looks to hit the target in kyudo. That’s why, it is such a pleasure when you do hit it. As I’m thinking of everyone learning together, people who are interested are sure to gather here tomorrow as well.”
After they were dismissed by Tomi-sensei’s words, Kaito waited for Minato to finish changing clothes before approaching him.
“Oi, Narumiya. What was with those earlier shots… Even though the ‘makuuchi’ (6) can’t be helped, why did you do it so early? Since you shot it so early, I couldn’t even get into yugamae in time.”
“Hey, didn’t I say that I couldn’t do it from the beginning? I didn’t mean to release it so soon.”
“Hah? What a lame excuse. You shot normally at the makiwara. But as soon as you stood in front of the target, you did those messy shots. Aren’t you ashamed as an archer?”
“…Oh, I am. I’m already not an archer anymore… Move, I’m going home now.”
Minato shook off Kaito, and walked quickly towards the exit.
“Minato, are you coming tomorrow? …Since I’ll be waiting for you.”
“You don’t have to, since I already stopped doing kyudo!”
Standing next to Seiya as they watched Minato run off, Tomi-sensei whispered to him.
“Takehaya-kun, is it possible that…”
“…He has hayake.”
Minato mounted his bike and sped off without looking anywhere but ahead.
It began to rain. Gripping the wet, slippery handlebars tightly, he pushed his bike on and ascended the steep hill road. His tail lamp left a trail of red afterimages on the gleaming asphalt, and the sound of car tires repelling the water overtook it. When he saw the torii, he stopped his bike and entered Yata no Mori.
At the Yata no Mori Kyudojo, the man was standing on the other side of the bamboo fence of the outdoor stands. As if so that the man would not find him, he crouched down on the spot to watch him. Maybe because of the humidity being high due to the rain, the clear tsurune from before couldn’t be heard, but the shots he sent out from his relaxed limbs were still beautiful. Deviation-free movements that were somewhat liberated. And yet, there was also a somewhat solemn feeling.
It was as though he was performing a prayer.
What would I wish for on a night where the moon and stars couldn’t be seen?
Suddenly, he met eyes with the man. Was it natural to spot him because the other side was on a higher ground?
The man made a scissors gesture with his yugake-covered right hand, and casually beckoned him over. Minato didn’t refuse him, simply staring vacantly at that gesture without using his brain. Then, the man placed his bow at his feet, and then went to the edge of the shajo and crouched down. “Come, boy,” he beckoned him with both hands.
It’s like he’s—.
“I am not a dog or a cat.”
“Well then, come here quickly. A soaking wet boy in the dark looks like a ghost from here, so it’s really scary.”
“I don’t want to make the shajo dirty.”
“It’s fine, it can just be mopped up later. You’re going to mop it up, right?”
He laughed, just like that night. Minato went up to the shajo, still dripping wet. The man picked up his bow lying on the ground and left that spot, then returned with a wrapped packet in his hand.
“Take off your clothes and dry them out, since I’m lending you this beginners’ training uniform. The men’s changing room is right in front of the reception desk. Also, you don’t need to be so formal with me.”
After he changed his clothes and returned, the man was sitting in a corner of the shajo. The spots where Minato dripped on were also completely wiped clean. “There you are,” he said, handing him a can of coffee that had a flame design on it this time.
Minato cupped the can with both hands.
“…It’s hot.”
“It gets cold at night. Oh, I have something good. Do you want to eat it too?”
When he wondered what was going to appear, it turned out to be oyaki (8). With red bean paste. Minato tossed the sweet oyaki into his mouth, downing it with the canned coffee.
After finishing his drink, the man began to adjust his bowstring’s nakajikake (nocking area). The groove of the arrow’s nock was slightly bigger than the bowstring’s thickness. In order to make it easier to nock the arrow, glue was applied to the bowstring and then it was wrapped in hemp, before it was adjusted to a reasonable thickness.
Minato looked up at the night sky and muttered, “Is it impossible for Fuu to come since it’s raining today?”
“Yeah, I’m going to call him on the next sunny day. Your shoulder is the perfect perch for him after all.”
“I’m not an ornament. By the way, how long do you do this for?”
“It was supposed to be until around nine P.M., but I only seem to be using it in the daytime recently. When I use it, I take the key out of the mailbox, then place the fee on the reception desk. 50 yen for an hour. Apparently couples sneak in here at night, since there’s no one here.”
“And this is supposed to be a sacred dojo…”
“You don’t seem to have much experience in that area. Shall I teach you the basics?”
“You perverted old man.”
The man grinned, as he used two small wooden block-like objects, called douhou, to tighten the nakajikake firmly. Thinking that he was restarting his practice, he instead said something unexpected.
“I get the feeling that you’re experienced with kyudo. Do you wanna try shooting a bow for a bit?”
“Um, no thanks.”
“Don’t be shy. Didn’t you come here because you want to shoot a bow?”
“I said, no thanks!”
Minato came to his senses at his own raised voice.
“…Sorry, I’m going home now.”
“Before you go, it’s okay for you to let out whatever you want here. Telephone lines don’t even pass through this kyudojo, so it’s a place isolated from the modern world in a sense. I’m someone who doesn’t exist in your reality. What you say now will never be told to anyone other than me.”
The man waited for Minato’s reply.
A long time passed, and Minato squeezed out the words, as if he was gasping them out.
“How are you able to do such beautiful shots? …I got ‘hayake’ in my last middle school tournament, and after that…I’ve gotten scared of shooting a bow.”
Hayake was a condition where one shoots an arrow even though one hasn’t decided on it. Without arriving at kai, the arrow was shot in the midst at drawing the bow apart. It was said to be a serious affliction in kyudo, much like the yips disease in golf. (9)
“After I lost in the tournament, I resumed practicing. Even though I could endure standing in front of the makiwara, I couldn’t last even one second in front of the targets. My own body wasn’t listening to what I was telling it at all. The more I think that I must not shoot it, the more the arrow slips from my hands. Before long, even drawing the bow became scary. Staying like that, I caused trouble for everyone.”
When he first joined the club, he had a senpai who could hit very well. Someone who could have served as the team captain. However, when that person got hayake, the club had dropped out right before the prefectural tournament. It was a mystery at the time. Why did he let go so quickly? What made him let go even though he didn’t want it to? He must be a weak-spirited person.
Now that he himself was in that position, he finally understood. Even though he was scolded by his sensei with “Why are you releasing it?” even though he was criticized by his teammates with “You’re shooting it too early,” he couldn’t do anything on his own. It was exactly like a disease. Before he knew it, nobody said anything. He knew that they had given up on him.
“And so, I quit just like that. Today, I held a bow for the first time in half a year. I was hoping that it might have been healed, but I was still no good… This is so uncool, right? This is what a talentless hack is like.”
“I see, that must have been so painful for you.”
Minato raised his head in surprise.
What did he say just now?
Painful? Was I in pain?
He reflexively guarded his eyes. It was the best he could do to withstand the things that were welling up.
The fear from the appearance of the hayake was similar to drowning in a muddy stream, but not everyone could sympathize with it.
“…Could I ask for your name? I’m Minato, Narumiya Minato.”
“Takigawa Masaki. Since I’m mostly called ‘Masa-san’, I’ll call you Minato as well.”
“Masa-san, I don’t know what to do… I don’t want to do kyudo anymore. I don’t want to reconfirm my unsightly self. So when my dad told me to take the entrance exams for a public high school because our finances were tough, I thought I was saved.
