A few hours past and mom was three chapters deep into her book, and my stomach started to growl. Mom glared at me. 'Go and get yourself something to eat, will you!?' She griped and the nurse started moving through the patients again... most of them were looking rather tired now... but most of them had at least a decade on Mom. "It’s fine... I can wait until you’re done." I smiled at her. But she shook her head and smiled in that way she did when she was about to get her way. 'Embry Call! You are making it awfully hard to focus on this book; with your stomach grumbling like an angry bear. Go. Eat. Besides ..' she waved the book at me this is about to get steamy and no mom wants to read the saucy stuff with her son sitting by her side.' She smirked and shoved my knee; which I moved in the name of playing human. I rolled my eyes and leaned forward. "Fine I'll go get a sandwich, but I'll be right back." I stood up and kissed the top of her head. 'Sophie...' Mom said a little too sweetly. 'You must be due a break soon. Why don't you keep him company? You've been on your feet all morning... you need a break dear.' I glared at my mother but then quickly smiled when I found the nurse looking at me. 'That sounds like fun... I need to check on one more patient if you don't mind waiting? I'll only be a minute.' She smiled keenly. Too keenly. But Mom was right there. "Um, yeah... of course." I smiled convincingly at the girl and after she almost skipped to her next patient; I glared at Mom again. "Why would you do that?" I asked in a hushed tone. "I told you I don't want to date any of your nurses." I didn't want to date anyone, but that conversation never went well with mom. 'It’s just lunch Embry it's not a big deal. Just be nice.' She whispered. "No. Mom... it is a big deal. I don't want to date anyone right now. I don't want to be set up and now she's looking at me with those big doe eyes." I hissed quietly. "When did us against the world turn into you sending me off to on a lunch date?" 'Don't be so vain Embry... You are a very sweet and handsome boy but vanity is an ugly quality.' Mom's face was the picture of innocence. She didn't understand that I liked my life the way it was. And even though she was aware of my reputation around La Push she never brought it up. Thank the Spirit's! "Mom, you're not hearin--" I heard the shuffle of sensible shoes behind me and I stopped talking. I turned to look up the girl's face and straightened up from being bent over talking to mom. She looked a little shocked at my height... but that wasn't unusual. 'Ready to go?' she asked with a smile. I nodded, it wasn't that she wasn't an attractive girl... she was kind of pretty. But pretty wasn't my type... and my 𝕣𝕖𝕒𝕝𝕥𝕚𝕠𝕟𝕤𝕙𝕚𝕡𝕤, if you could call them that, lasted a few hours. So there was no way this was going anywhere. We could be at this hospital three times a week when things were bad... A one night stand with a nurse or doctor could make things very awkward. The walk to the cafeteria wasn't too uncomfortable; she wasn't afraid to start a conversation but not too chatty either. She talked about mom and her sister, it made me smile and I didn't have the heart to correct her and tell her that #Sue was a close friend to my Mom. But they regarded one another as sisters and that was the most important thing. We grabbed coffee and pre-packed sandwiches. Forks Hospital was small so there were only a half dozen people around, mostly staff. And the radio was softly playing a Freya Ridings song that pulled my attention. But, of course, that meant I stopped listening to what Sophie was saying. 'Do you play too then?' she asked when she got my attention. "Hmm...?" I followed her gaze to my fingers tapping lightly on the edge of the table in time to the music. 'Your Mom told me that she plays the piano... and she does that with her fingers too when there's music. Or if she has headphones on.' She smiled. "Observant aren't you?" I chuckled and gave her a genuine smile. "Must be a habit I picked up from Mom." Not a lie, just

I shifted in my seat a little. "I do play the guitar." I answered honestly, just leaving out the fact that I played piano too. I turned the conversation back to her. "Do you play anything?" She flushed. 'I do but you'll think I'm a total nerd.' She looked down and took a tiny bite from her sandwich. "I guarantee you I will... but aren't all musicians nerds." I teased her and sipped my coffee. 'Oh... No, this is next level nerdy... I play the cello.' She turned a brighter shade of pink. 'Well... when I have the time… which is rare.' "That is not next level nerdy." I quirked a brow. "Would you call Luka Šulić nerdy?" I laughed when her eyes went wide. 'How... you know who Luka Šulić is?' She was utterly shocked. I just took out my phone and open the music app tapping in 2Cellos and all the albums listed on the screen. I slid the phone to the middle of the table to show her. She gasped and gave a little giggle. 'You're a bigger nerd than me!' she blurted out without an ounce of shyness now. 'Well... now I have to have a nose.' She smiled and started flicking through my albums, leaving my phone where I had placed it on the table and that started us down a road of talking about music... That was something I could talk to any about for hours on end.
