hello this is the anon who thinks lando pulls on fem! oscar's pigtails, so pigtail anon .... but anyway, i am sooo interested in the dynamic between jos and fem! max. it's definitely giving the dad who thinks he's always right vs the daughter he taught not to take any shit (even his). i want to hear your thoughts if there dynamic changes when max is born as a daughter instead of the son he wanted (probably). also hope you've been doing good !!! — pigtails anon
lando pulling oscar's pigtails ask // last jos ask (fem!max)
ahhh!! welcome, welcome dearest pigtails anon <33 sorry it took me a bit to answer your ask but i had to pull out my laptop to make the linking easier lolol
so yeah, jos at his core doesn't change. he's still brutally honest, definitely verbally abusive, always prattling on that everything is for max and the goal to become world champion. what he doesn't realize with raising her like this, (which you've pointed out very well) that max doesn't take any shit from anyone, so he kinda shot himself...
i would say that jos wants for max to focus on herself even more than what he did irl. since all of her rivals are boys and she's a girl, they could be a distraction, so he definitely wants her to not have any connection. he's also for sure not happy that max grows close with daniel, thinking that there are better driver to connect to, if she has to do it
but of course, max doesn't listen, and does what she wants. another major change, in my opinion, jos would allow his wife to have more contact with max. considering sophie has been a woman in motorsport, even if it wasn't the higher series, she knows what it means to be a woman in motorsport. he has ofc the last word, but i would say that max is socially a bit less stunted.
obviously not that much, since she's also dutch and dutch people (from my own experience and what i've seen online) are most times more honest and blunt than people from other cultures. with jos as father.. well max fundamentally doesn't change, but she knows enough about social cues lol
generally, i would say jos is a bit 'softer' with max, but only physically. he would probably think twice of leaving her behind or give her a hit on the helmet, but still be verbally very very strict with her and push her as driver maybe even more because she IS a woman and not a man

What do you think Sizzy would name there kids???
I feel like if where thinking about who they could name them after, Simon has: George, Levi (His dad). And Izzy has: Max, And Robert (tho I’m 99% she would not use this)!!
I know a lot of people headcanon Luke and Leia as there baby names but I lowkey hate that 😭😭
ALSO, Simon and Izzy kids are definitely the opposite of Izzy’s siblings, I can imagine them with three girls and than just one boy!!
If they are girls I can see: Georgia/georgina, and than Maxine (for max :,)))
Other names they could use are old lightwood names as well: Gabriel, Gideon, Christopher, Cecily, Anna, Sophie/Sophia, Thomas, Eugenia, Barbara, Tatiana, ect ect ect
ANWYAYSYSYS i wanna know your name ideas <344
i honestly haven't thought about it that much! just because i don't want to get too attached to some names when we could very well be served totally different ones in the twp epilogue or something lol making headcanons that could be disproven can be a disappointing game unforch..
i do, however, completely agree that they'd be more girl parents than boy parents. don't ask me why. it's a vibe. plus they already have their nephews. but also idk any time i imagine their future family, it's the daughters who appear more prominently in my mind.
anywayy i do in fact have an opinion about the name max, which is that i don't think they'll use it as a first name, even feminized. it would just be too much with the blueberry already kickin around yk? i can see them using it as a middle name tho, which i think would be sweet.
also levi maxwell? obsessed. obsessed obsessed. accidentally and quietly adding that to my hcs despite what i just said lol (see this is why i don't think about it ;)) ah!! i would just love so much for simon's dad to be represented. imagine little levi asks about his name and simon gets to recall some of his fondest memories with his own father?? (except for the one but shh we don't talk about that) <33
i do think it would be a great idea to feminize george, mainly just because his death would have been the most recent and i think being able to switch it up a bit would be a good way to honor him without it feeling as heavy as it could yk? plus georgie is such a cute name.
i'd love for them to give one of their daughters the middle name rebecca too <3 i just think it would be so special for simon to be able to carry on these names from his mundane family (and culture) into shadowhunter life. plus becky deserves the recognition imo. i don't think it would be a first name tho. i could also see them carrying sophia along as a middle name.
overall i think sizzy would probably lean more away from giving traditional family first names to their kids than other shadowhunter parents? while i don't think this means they'd be naming their kids luke and leia.. i can see them wanting to be more creative, and give their kids the chance to carve their own paths if they want to.
there's always more jewish names, for one. like abigail? abigail would be cute. and then yeah i could see them using a fictional name tbh... but maybe one they come across more in passing than from a piece of media that's already so beloved? also.. would it be cheesy for them to name a kid brooklyn? lol
anyway they have a lot of possibilities hehe
levi maxwell. abigail sophia. brooklyn rebecca. georgia simone ??? too much? idk hehe this is too fun <33

i agree with u about the merit thing really rubbing me the wrong way like just one example (of literal thousands I’m sure lol) if it was on merit sophie would have received more opportunities being awarded to those based on merit (and even a little bit of nepotism! she’s from a big racing family!) because she was so successful in karting and even beat the men that made it into the higher series. idk there’s just so many things about society that need to change before women have equality in motorsport (like first of all rich families not pushing their daughters into horses lol) that these general statements of merit in order to get women into f1 is so silly. AND I also agree with you about this generalization that all drivers want to be in f1 therefore all women should want to be in f1 like women have found success in other series (danica patrick! the Iron maidiens!) like I feel f1 believes it’s the center of the universe and everyone wants to be them which is sometimes true but not always.
Sophie is such a good example bro of how this patriarchy bullshit extends over money like she had all this immense potential she was beating the 'boys' or whatvr u gotta do to be taken seriously and then she met jos and she got swallowed up by the patriarchal model like literally gave up her own career, first for jos and then for max and people were like yuh this makes sense this is what's expected from her😐😐😐 Like why couldnt fucking Jos give up HIS shit so she could race. Maybe we get no Max sure but we get her. Like sophie cud have made some serious moves in racing she had the talent and she was strong. But like u said many things need to change first and imo the way to go isnt we inject a bunch of money into something like the w series or the f1 academy and give the winner a shot at being up wid 'the f1 boys' like what type of nonsense. No one wants to invest into something like that and what happens when this driver who by all accounts is the 'most capable' of her ((made up)) level suddenly finds herself fighting drivers she has never dealt wid her over a whole season. What wud that mean for all the lil girls watching when she inevitably cant keep up, not because shes a woman but because she has no experience or funding or backing and she’s set up to underperform like Jamie Chadwick. Like it wud be a step back. Something like the w series will always be a step back and ig thats harsh but its my opinion
All the drivers u mentioned even tho danica is like the devil also lilou like shes not that much older than me and shes doing great!! The iron dames are so cool too I loved to watch them during le mans Im definitely following endurance more because of them
Also yuh like theres this ridiculous inferiority complex especially within single seater racing and the 'pinnacle of motorsport' label is ridiculous and unserious. But like tbh some of these series dont help constantly trying to gas themselves up. Like the 'omfg this sm better than f1!!' all the time from like indy fans and drivers is kinda cringe and desperate to me like. Let the product speak for itself bro relax. tbh f1 isnt even about actual racing half the time which is why u got somebody like max verstappen who worked his whole life to get to f1 and win the wdc is now like 41 wins into it like umm I wanna do something else lmfao

OTP Questions
Thank you so much @mskaneko for making these questions and for finally finding question 44! đŸ€Ł
Tumblr media
1. What other couple would your OTP get along with?
Maxwell and Sophie for obvious reasons
2. Do either of them have secrets even the other doesn’t know?
Oh yeah, Drake has a secret stash of sweets because Willow eats them all...what Drake doesn’t know is Willow found it and he thinks Max is the one stealing them.
3. Who is the one that sees the bigger picture, while the other focuses on the small details?
Willow sees the bigger picture and Drake focuses on all the small things
4. Who does stuff on impulse?
Willow 100% and it drives Drake crazy sometimes ESPECIALLY the impulse buying of silly things that she doesn’t need.
5. What is their favourite holiday?
Christmas, Drake loves how giddy Willow gets and how over the top she is with everything
6. What is their favourite board game?
Risk and cluedo
.monopoly is banned after Willow flipped the table because Drake was winning
7. Who would go out of their way to do something silly to make their partner laugh?
Willow, she always comes up with or finds stupid jokes that aren’t funny but she laughs her head off. If she knows Drakes had a bad day she won’t stop until he’s smiling again
8. Favourite canon moment of them?
Star gazing in Lythikos will always hold a special place in my heart
9. least favourite canon moment of them?
Oh my god don’t even get me started 🙄
10. Who is the competitive one?
They both are. They have a game night every Friday and are always making little bets and wagers with each other, they can’t help themselves
11. Who likes to go on drives to nowhere I’m in particular?
Both of them do, they love to just jump in the car turn the music way up and just drive
12. Who sings along to the radio?
Willow loves to sing and dance, she can’t help herself
13. Who would accidentally set the kitchen on fire while cooking?
They’re both good cooks, Willow has been known to have a little too much to drink while cooking and forget because she gets too carried away dancing to music
14. Who is more seductive when they are drunk?
Willows a mischievous asshole when she’s drunk but she’s definitely the more seductive one
15. Who wakes the other up in the middle of the night to tell them a cool dream they had?

16. Who asks weird questions in the middle of the night?
Willow, she asks Drakes weird and ridiculous questions all the time
17. Who likes to walk around the house naked and who tells the other to go out some clothes on?
Willow normally wears a oversized hoodie or jumper, Drakes the one that walks around in his underwear or with no shirt on, they don’t tell each other to put clothes on
18. Who is always ready to have sex at any time, at any place?
They both are, they can’t keep their hands off each other
19. Who likes to surprise the other with a lot of random small gifts?

There first picture was taken by Max, at the ranch by the fire while they were having a little get together

Drake but Willow doesn’t let him
23. Which bad habit of their partner do they find the most annoying?
When Drake eats food he has to do it in a specific order and when they have sweets he separates them all into colour/flavor groups, Willow has no patience with food.
Willow is like a whirlwind and will leave things lying all round the house and Drakes always picking up after her
24. Who is the better driver?
They’re both good drivers, Willow has the worst road rage out the two
25. Who is more likely to admit they are wrong in an argument?
They are both stubborn but Drake is normally the one to back down first
26. What is something that reminds them of one another?
Whenever Drake hears Willows favourite songs on the radio he’ll smile and turn it up and dogs, if Willow sees a dog she will squeal so if he sees one when they aren’t together he’ll slyly take a picture to send to her.
Whiskey and certain country/rock songs will always make Willow think of Drake. If she sees silly videos online she immediately send them to Drake and says “Who does this remind you of”
27. Would they get matching couple tattoos? If yes, what would they be?
They have each other’s initials tattooed on their ribs and they have each other star signs tattooed on their inner bicep.

Drake normally because he’s a lot bigger but Willow always puts up a good fight
30. Who likes to take photos of the other when they’re not looking?

31. Where would they go to get away from everyone else and just be alone?
They love camping and road trips. They normally find a random place they like the look of and just go. They love being outdoors
32. If they got to pick what one another wears for a day, what would one another wear?
Drake loves when Willow wears his clothes, especially his football jerseys with her hair tied up in a messy bun.
Willow thinks Drake looks good in whatever he’s wearing, she has a soft spot for him in a blue suit though
44. What do they love most about each other?
Drake loves Willows freckles and her dimples. He loves how her eyes crinkle up when she smiles or laughs and the way she throws her head back. He loves how caring and passionate she is and how she always puts other people first.
Willow loves how protective Drake is and how his soft side comes out when they’re alone together. She loves his hair and is always running her hand through it when she gets the chance. Physically she loves how broad his chest and shoulders are and how tall he is.
Bonus: 3 random HC about your OTP
1. They have a daughter, Dakota, and a son, Cole
2. They aren’t noble, they live in Drakes cabin and frequently go back to Texas to visit Willows brother
3. Once a month they spend a weekend camping and going on hikes, they love finding new places

I sent Tumblr user rainhadaenerys why she might like the show Dark Angel, and I thought I might as well also post it here since I never shut up about it (for anyone curious)
So, I think there's a chance you might like the show "Dark Angel" (at least the first season. The second season had some good ideas but bad execution. But while most people prefer the first season, the second season fans are more vocal online. Probably because Jensen Ackles is in it).
The first season came out in 2000 and takes place in 2019-2020 (the second season is 2020-2021 and came out a year later, after 9/1 in real life, which is why season two toned down some of S1's themes). The show is about this created/genetically engineered girl, Max, who was designed to be the perfect soldier and who--alongside those like her in her unit, who she sees as “siblings”--was tortured by her military creators (such as her main traitor and surrogate awful father, Lydecker), until she and eleven others of them escaped when she was nine. From there on out, she's on the run, staying under the radar so she doesn't have to go back to where she was created and had been kept (Manticore).
In the year 2009 (the year Max escaped, when she was nine) terrorists set off this electromagnetic pulse, that basically wiped out all of America's technology and turned it into a third world country over night (so this is part of how Max is able to keep her head down in this world). But because of all of this, there was anarchy and bad people overtook the good ones and stole their positions, returning things to the law of the jungle (there's a lot in this show about corrupt political figures, police brutality), etc.
At first journalists tried to report on all of this, but then they were silenced. But one--Logan Cale--went underground as "Eyes Only", an anonymous cyber journalist who hacks into people's broadcasts and tells them the truths being kept from them, and is seen as a terrorist by those he'd try to expose.
At the start of the show (2019), Max works in Seattle as a bike messenger (also in the city where Logan is), which is the worst job you can get and the only one the underprivileged can (many of these being people of color) and steals things from the rich to give to a private investigator trying to help her find her siblings.
Eventually she tries to steal something from Logan (not knowing he's Eyes Only, but she finds this out here). And there's an immediate attraction, because they get into this conversation while Logan's holding her at gun point--trying to keep her there until the guards come--because they realize they have something in common (like admiration for the goddess Bast, which is the statue Max was trying to steal), and Logan is actually happy Max is just a thief because he thought she was an assassin.
This one drug company is acting like they're selling the drug to people--that will save their lives--but is really just selling them candy, and selling the real thing for a higher price overseas. And a woman who knows this is going to testify about it, and Logan is keeping her and her daughter at his apartment until they can get to a safehouse.
Max eventually bolts, and Logan sees her use her powers in doing so. He tracks her down, partly to see if she's going to be a danger to him, but also because the audience can begin to see that he wants to enlist her help. The two of them debate about morality, about how Logan wants to make a change and give people choices again. But Max is skeptical that he wants to get it back to the "good old days", where people still died of diseases they didn't need to and spent obscenes amounts of money redecorating their homes to match their cat. She leaves again when he questions how she jumped out of, like, an eleven story window unscathed.
They meet up one more time, and Logan kind of seduces/tricks Max into letting her see the barcode on her neck (that all those from Manticore have, as its encrypted into their DNA. He’d gotten an anonymous tip about Manticore years ago and put two-and-two together that Max was one one of the escapees), and Max is hurt by this (as she had really liked him and feels hella betrayed here. I think Logan for sure liked her, but he's just way too focused on his mission above all else at first, and that's one of the flaws he has to work on).
He bargains with Max that if she helps him get the woman and her daughter into witness protection, he'll help her find her siblings. Max understandably disagrees, since so far she's gotten by by keeping to herself and wants to keep it that way.
Logan tries to do the mission by himself but it fails. He's shot and ends up in a coma for a time, and is paraplegic in the end. And the little girl is kidnapped, but the mom makes it back to Logan's apartment. Max sees all of this broadcast on TV and feels guilty, and actually goes to see the unconscious Logan at the hospital (and tells him how she's not sorry and sees it all as his fault, even though she doesn't), and saves him from another assassination attempt. She runs into the little girl’s mother (the little girl’s named Sophie) and promises to save Sophie, and does so rather impressively.
She even gets Manticore, that had been on her tail the whole episode, to fight for her--by getting the address for the girl's location on a line that she knew was tapped and that Manticore was listening in on. And there's a chilling moment at the end where Max, wearing a mask, walks by Lydecker while carrying Sophie and he realizes at the last moment that it was her. Edit: They also bring all those who were duping people--and selling them candy, so that they ended up dying because of it:(--to justice.
A few months later, Max visits Logan at his apartment and he's back in the fight for the less fortunate. Max ends up asking if he thinks he can really make a difference, to which he says he thinks he can with her help, and Max agrees to his deal and this is where the show really starts.
And it's just... so good. I like the political commentary, that I could see you really getting into (and I'm sad they tone it down in S2, after 9/11), but my favorite bits is the stuff with Max, Lydecker, her siblings, and all things Manticore that I barely even touched on here.
Most of the transgenics (those created humans) are PoC, too (including Max) to show how they're oppressed.
And Max is just SUCH a good character (who's even a chosen one in S2), with such great development, who has to be one of the best characters of all-time (especially for female heroes).
And in S1, there's so much showing of how men can be awful, and Max is like the hero to women from them (beating up many of them and even killing a few. It reminds me a bit of Daenerys. And is why I say claims against Dany--saying that when she did things like Max, it was hints of her madness--is bullshit. They'd probably do the same to Max if her show had come out today, but it didn't and instead she got to be the awesome hero she deserved to be).
She also eventually stops stealing altogether--even though I was okay with her not being a goody-goody hero--unless it's from the bad and for the poor.
She also becomes a leader...
There's also so much fun swapped gender role stuff with her and Logan (with her being the superhero and him the sidekick, her being the brawns and him the brains--though Max has equal brains, too, if not even more than Logan--and her doing comic book type things, like super speeding away and Logan getting irritated by it: usually it’s a guy hero who does this, and a normal girl annoyed with it... and Logan can even cook exceptionally, and is always cooking for Max, and she can’t even boil water, etc.).
And speaking of which, Max and Logan are my favorite ship of all time. They're so interesting... and fun (but there's loads of angst there, too), and are SO good for each other. Logan helps Max become more selfless (which really, she always was and wanted to be) and she helps him to chill. And they're both liberal lefties.
The first season of this show is my favorite show of all-time.
Edit: The character, Original Cindy, is also one of the first lesbians on TV (maybe even the first, and before Willow in Buffy). And the show tried to have a positive story/episode with a trans character (with, once again, this stuff was huge for the time... There were some definite misses there, but they at least tried). And disabled representation on this show! And the disabled person eventually winning the heart of the superhero girl!

tell me more about your ocs
Thank you so much! Okay so if I do all of my ocs it will take too long, so I’m gonna do a little summary of my most developed!
Willow Spencer (pysch) - basically it’s the secret baby plot! Shawn’s side never knew willow existed, and willow didn’t know she had other family. Willow is a psychology student in college, and joins her cousin in being a fake psychic detective, all though she joins at first just to get to know him.
Lorelai “Rory” burkhardt (Grimm) - she hunts wesen (animal-based monsters) and at the beginning is reconnecting with her brother, who’s just finding out about the world. It’s not technically a perfect example, but i generally consider Rory the nature to her brothers nurture.
John Jax (buffy the vampire slayer) - So he’s a character that shows up to help when he’s needed. A couple years ago he was a detective and his partner died by a vampire attack, so John became a hunter. He’s also in a fake custody battle with Giles over the kids.
Josette Jax (angel the series) - shes Johns daughter (though they don’t meet till ats season 2) but no one knows that. Jo and angel are teamed up by the powers that be to be partners, and neither are happy about it at first. And I love her but she makes the worst decisions.
Lynn Allen (the gifted) - Lynn is my empath child, and her story is pretty much about how no matter how what happens, even when she’s being prosecuted for existing, she remains a good person. Also the effect being an empath would have on a person, because that would not be easy.
The vampire diaries ocs -
Rylee O’Connell- basically I count on rye to be human voice of tvd.
Akira Ito - she really wants to hunt vampires, but the toll it ends up taking on her makes her second guess.
Evander Salvatore- time traveler. Poor boy is turned into a vamp in the past, immediately desiccated (vampire coma), and gets woken up to be used as a bargaining chip in the 21st century.
Legacies ocs (yes we’re skipping the originals, rye goes there and I haven’t made other ocs for it yet)
Cassandra Lockwood - the oldest of Rylee and Tyler’s adoptive (platonic) kids. She’s a witch, and loves it. Has like, 5 friends.
Emmett Lockwood- youngest adoptive kid, and a recently triggered werewolf, hates it. Loves his family, and actually has a lot of friends.
Eleanor (I’ll give her a last name when I find her a fc) - shes a hunter who ends up going to the Salvatore school after the death of her parents, and is eventually adopted by rye and ty. She’s pretty angry, and has a lot of energy.
Jordan - my recently turned vampire child, doesn’t really want to face up to what they are yet.
Charmed 1998
Poppy halliwell - adoptive halliwell sister, is definitely on board being a witch in the beginning. Isn’t really to concerned with having a normal life.
Sophie wicker - exists in a separate story from poppy. She’s a half demon half witch, and actually starts off as an antagonist trying to kill the charmed ones.
Charmed 2018
Max Vera - an adoptive Vera sister, she’s a secretive kid who loves her family, but doesn’t even know her biggest secret.
Cj (person of interest) - So my big thing with Cj is not saying anything about her, but I can give out that she used to be an assassin and is trying to atone for that in the story.
Bonus:
Dinah laurel Winchester- baby hunter, used to be a sociopath (it’s a magically given emotions thing), and I’ve only plotted 5/15 seasons for her.
Thank you for asking!

Nico Jr: Max, look. This is getting really, really tiring. For both of us. I know it. But damn it- I’m willing to work with you-
Maxine: Work with me? Work with me? By bringing dirty sluts around my daughter, that’s working with me?
Nico Jr: She’s not a slut. And I didn’t know I needed your permission to bring who I’m dating around our child.
Maxine: I don’t want any strange person around Anais, Nico. You and your revolving door of women- how is that fair to her- to see her father with a different flavor of the week-
Nico Jr: I’m cautious- very cautious- about who I bring around Anais. I’ve never brought anyone I’ve dated around her, except Sophie. And it’s because things are getting serious between us and I’d like for Sophie to get to know the most important person in my life...my daughter.
Maxine mocking: Serious? You don’t even know the definition of the word! News flash- serious is more than just casual sex-
Nico Jr interrupts: Are we here to talk about Anais? Or about who I’m fucking? I’m confused as to which is more important to you.
Maxine gives him a death glare- one that Nico Jr felt to the depths of his soul. He hated that look in her eyes.
Maxine shaking: I don’t care what you do or who you do it with. You aren’t important to me at all. You don’t even exist for me- except for when it comes to Anais. I’ve spent years erasing you from my mind, Nico Holmes.

→ CHAPTER ONE
Here it is! It’s recommended to read all "Backstage Masterlist" items available on my profile before or after reading this chapter! Hope you like it!
Warnings: mentions of death and depression.
July 20, 2011
Orange County, Southern California, USA
She knew that in exactly sixty minutes, a year would be complete. The girl’s brown orbs were almost wide open, fixed on the two flashing red dots that marked the time on her digital clock by the bed. Even turned around, she still could feel her twin sister’s gaze on her back, penetrating her ribs, as a signal that she was also aware of the approaching date in three thousand six hundred seconds.
If you have been through this, you will surely recognize every following word: denial, anger, negotiation, depression, acceptance. Although death is the only certainty of all mankind, no one is ever prepared to go through emotional grief. The intense pain, the feeling of revolt, the deep emptiness. The whole family was aware of all these emotions.
Exactly a year ago, Naya Valentini and her family had lost two members of their family tree. Under her precise social perception, her favorite uncle and her little cousin. Matteo Valentini was that uncle that, no matter what, made the day better. He was the life of family reunions, and after his divorce, he seemed to be doing better than anyone else in this world. On that afternoon, in July 2010, he had taken his triplets Max, Graham and Sophie to the movies. Everyone was excited, talking about the premiere of Despicable Me. What no one knew was that when they were coming back home, tragedy awaited them. The white van hit the driver’s entire side, including the back part, where Sophie was.
When Naya’s parents arrived at the hospital after being notified, the news that Matteo had died on the spot frightened them at the thought of the possible death of the children. Luckily, the boys would recover quickly, but Sophie had been rushed to the operation room. Naya wasn’t with them, in fact, she and her other siblings had been left behind to take care of the new foster son of the family, who was a newborn.
At home, everything was in chaos, and she still remembered the whole scene, which her brain insisted on showing in slow motion: her oldest brother Liam trying to stop Autie from shouting that she wanted to go to the hospital to see her cousins, Ethan almost blowing up the microwave while preparing something to eat, while she was trying to finish helping Devyn out in the bath, but hearing the baby crying wasn’t helping much.
With their parents out of the house and the dread of the idea of their cousins and uncle involved in an accident, the four eldest kids Liam, Ethan, Naya and Lexi were able (with a lot of effort) to bring the heavy mattresses downstairs where they had decided to spend the night together, with the strategy of gathering the younger ones on the same space so they could keep a better eye on them. It was dawn when their father arrived, finding all his children on his living room floor, sleeping, except for Lexi, who was giving Joey baby formula. Naya still remembered waking up and how her father had tried to be as gentle as possible telling them that Uncle Matt and Sophie had passed away.
— I can’t sleep either. — Naya heard her sister’s voice over her shoulder.
And in that simple sentence, it was possible to feel the weight. They both knew how hard it had been for the whole family, especially for their father, who had just lost his favorite brother. The situation was ten times worse when he entered the fourth and most difficult stage of grief: depression. Mornings at the kitchen table, once animated by the children’s conversations, suddenly became quieter and quieter. Dad had just recovered from the last phase, acceptance, and the one-year anniversary had already arrived.
Another person who was suffering a lot was Moon, Naya and her brothers mom. She had an extremely maternal relationship with the triplets, especially after her brother-in-law’s divorce, where their mother decided to abandon them. Sometimes, it even seemed like she was grieving more than Alexander, her husband and Matteo’s brother.
— What do you think will happen today? — Lexi asked, but it was the silence that greeted her. — I just hope mom doesn’t freak out. Dad’s fine now, but her

Naya turned to her twin sister’s side, tugging at the blanket, realizing for the first time that night that they were laying in the same position.
— She won’t. She is a force of nature. — And there was definitely a very strong degree of intensity and precision in Naya’s response. Her mother really as a very inspiring woman, starting with her life story.
Kwon Moon never had any contact with her biological father, the only thing she knew was that he was part of the USFK, the American Forces of Korea. After a one night stand, her mother eventually returned to Busan, where Moon was born and they moved to the United States when she was 15 years old, just because of her mother, deluded with life in a foreign country and hopes to marry her daughter’s father. They didn’t find him, and spent a good time in cheap hotel rooms.
Moon was the one who decided to go to school and learn as much English as she could, teaching her mother in the spare time of her first job. Years later, she went to college and became pregnant, resulting in marriage to her boyfriend. Still studying, even in a distance program, as her children were born, never for a second of her life did she give up the dream of creating her own line of products in Beaufort, deciding to move to Los Angeles to finally open her store and put into practice what she learned with her chemistry degree.
Nowadays, mom had two stores in Southern California, and she was doing her best every day, always encouraging her children to do the same. Today would also be a day without school. The family would visit Matteo Valentini and his daughter’s grave.
— Do you think about Sophie? — This time it was Naya who broke the moment of reflection.
— Honestly? — Lexi turned up, staring at the ceiling before moving on. — Not anymore. Of course I miss her. It must be much worse for the boys, I can’t even imagine what would be like to lose you.
After the accident, Max and Graham were living with the Valentini-Kwon’s family, as their mother didn’t show up and they didn’t have anyone besides Alex and Moon to take care of them.
— How about you?
— I’m thinking about her now. — Naya confessed.
— But that’s because it’s the death anniversary.
— Yes, but I thought the same thing when dad came home that day and told us everything. Sophie was seven years old. She’s gone without knowing what high school is like, or what it’s like to kiss someone, or drive a car. She never had a chance to live, unlike Uncle Matt. — Naya adjusted a lock of her own hair. — Thinking about it makes me depressed. She could have had the world.
— Yes. — Lexi’s agreement came in a low voice tone.
— What about us?
— What do you mean? — Without understanding the question, Lexi frowned.
— What I mean is that
 — Naya sat on the bed, the blanket falling on her lap, just as her hair fell over her pajamas. — We can have the world. The question is: what are we doing with our lives?
— Okay, Nay. Relax a little and quit all this philosophy of life for now. Me and you
We’re only sixteen. School things are our biggest concern. — Lexi accompanied the twin on the move, getting up and going to sit on her sister’s bed.
— But that’s the point, Lexi. What if we die? I never did anything I wanted. Sophie was seven years old, didn’t have much she could have done except
Bring some message to our family. — Saying that sounded like the right interpretation. — And it hurts me to say this, but I don’t want to end up like her, Lex. I want to live. I want to decide what I am going to do, to challenge myself more. Because as far as I know, I can die tomorrow, or the day after. I want to be like Uncle Matt, he did everything he wanted.
Alexa seemed to understand the meaning of the conversation, the reason for her sister being so reflective.
— So what do you want to do? — Unrelated to, you know, what we have now. Boyfriend, dancing, friends, apart from all this?
The question took her by surprise. What did Naya want to do with her life? Once she graduated from high school, what would happen? The memory of a little girl came to light when her interest in old movies began to emerge after a summer vacation at her grandparent’s farm. After that, she remembered her godfather and the piano classes, and how he said she had a good voice. Her dream of being a musical actress started from there, together with an entire week spent only watching the famous Broadway plays. She had participated in “13” two years ago and she missed that place.
Still thinking about her and her sister’s godfather, she wondered if she should believe him. After so many refusals, she wouldn’t have the courage to call him for advice. The way was to try to go through every phase of the challenge, just like what her late cousin would never have the opportunity to do.
With a smile building up just as a year had passed since the accident, Naya looked at her sister before laying on the bed again.
— What? Why are you smiling? Nay?
— I figured out what I want to do.
— And you won’t tell me?
— You will find out, Lex.
The girl glanced once again at the digital clock, following the moment it had just shown 04:01am, just one minute more than when her cousin had been declared lifeless. However, the only thing she could do was smile. She had understood one of the little girl missions on her short passage through Earth, and hoped the rest could understand soon too. With a lighter heart, Naya whispered before closing her eyes.
— Thank you, Sophie.

hellooo once again everyone ! lenny again, here to bring you a brand new muse because i truly couldn’t resist sophie’s face. i am very excited for dear ana here and everything you need to know about her is right below the cut !! ( i apologize for the length ... ajksl ) if you like what you see, be sure to give this post a LIKE and i’ll come at you for all the plots !!
( sophie turner. twenty three. cisfemale. she/her. ) ❛ anastasia helders-trenet, an aries from london, england, moved into holloway three years ago. they are a fashion student that lives in apartment 4c and their neighbors don’t particularly mind them. some say they can be self-indulgent and temperamental but others say they’re ambitious and passionate. anyways, one thing is for sure: you hear lush life by zara larsson, it’s ana blasting it.
↘ đ“«đ“Șđ“Œđ“Čđ“Źđ“Œ !
given name: anastasia helders-trenet
nickname: ana
age: twenty3
birthdate: april 10, 1995
hometown: london, england
occupation: fashion student / model
↘ đ“±đ“Čđ“Œđ“œđ“žđ“»đ”‚ !
born with a silver spoon in her mouth, anastasia was raised in the epitome of a posh, english household
her father is a successful ceo of a company she’s never really paid attention to, and her mother is a successful fashion designer. they’re far from ordinary parents ( i mean they named their children anastasia and maximilien.... cmon ) but ana has always been incredibly grateful for the life they provided her and her younger brother, max
you’re probably expecting some sort of rich kid sob story, huh? the whole boohoo my parents were never home, we were raised by nannies schtick but ana’s childhood was truly the opposite of that. sure, it was tough growing up with parents with such important, successful careers who often travelled for business, but ana and her brother never held that against them because they understood their parents were just incredibly passionate about their careers — plus, how could they complain when those careers paid for their designer clothes, music lessons, and extravagant vacays?
so yeah, anastasia lived an annoyingly spoiled, exciting, and picturesque life in london. her parents spoiled her and her brother with dream-worthy holidays and immersed them in so much culture, ana just drips of knowledge, passion, and curiosity now
they often travelled to france to visit her mother’s family so she speaks fluent french, learned italian after her first trip to italy when she fell in love with the culture, and can speak some broken german. she’s currently diving into spanish during her studies in nyc
she is quite honestly That Bitch.
for a bit more details about the helders-trenet household, you can check out evie’s intro for max!! she did a v good job of elaborating on their familial relationship
obviously she inherited her love for fashion from her mother. ever since she was little, ana has loved dressing up, picking her own outfits, and shopping through her mother’s closet. so it only seemed right that she ended up dreaming of pursuing her own career in the industry
when she turned 18, ana began modelling for her mother’s clothing line and fell in love with every aspect of the industry. for a year, she modelled for numerous campaigns and fashion shows until she eventually set her sights on working on the other side of the show. sure, getting her makeup painted on and hair curled was fun, but she yearned to actually create
when she was 19, she began studying fashion design in london. she may have learnt a lot from her mother, but ana wanted to make her own roots within the industry and not rely on her name for the rest of her life
for spring semester of her first year, ana decided to study abroad and travelled to new york city with a small group of classmates from her uni — and instantly fell in love with the city.
as an avid audrey hepburn enthusiast, ana’s expectation of new york city was quite high in her mind and she’d half been expecting to be let down. but, it was even better than she’d hoped and dreamed. she’d barely made it one step out of jfk before her eyes had lit up with her dream literally making itself a reality. by the end of her semester abroad, ana had made up her mind on moving to the big apple.
↘ đ“čđ“»đ“źđ“Œđ“źđ“·đ“œđ“”đ”‚ !
after her trip was over, she returned to london to pack her things and say her tearful goodbyes to her family before returning to nyc as quickly as she could to start her new life walking the streets she’d grown up dreaming of walking through
obviously, she could have just asked her parents to rent her out a beautiful loft apartment in the heart of the city, but ana wanted to make her experience in new york her own so she found holloway on her own and moved in almost immediately after falling in love with everything about it
she enrolled in nyu’s fashion program and is now finally in her final year of schooling. at the end of the spring, she’ll be a graduate and finally be thrusted into the real world. she’s still a little unsure of what her future may hold for her ( mostly about whether she’ll stay in new york or return to london ) but she’s sorta just going with the flow right now
she still models on the side, mostly small shoots for local designers because she loves supporting them, but her mother often books her some bigger shoots here and there
↘ đ“Źđ“±đ“Șđ“»đ“Șđ“Źđ“œđ“źđ“»Â !
aesthetics: designer heels clicking against the pavement. a perfectly manicured hand waving down a cab. colour-coded notes and flashcards. late nights spent watching breakfast at tiffany’s.
notable traits: ambitious, self-indulgent, passionate, creative, honest, temperamental, materialistic
best described as
her parents rooted a deep sense of confidence inside of her heart that often gets the best of her but who says you can be too confident? — probably lots of people but ana doesn’t care. her years of being pampered as the precious helders-trenet daughter prepared her for a life of getting what she wants, how she wants. she was taught everything comes at a price and to work hard to achieve her dreams, which is exactly what she will always do.
she definitely inherited her father’s determination, short temper, and ambition, but her mother didn’t fail to pass on her perfectionism, lust for life, and award-winning smile.
at first sight, ana can definitely be mistaken for a spoiled princess, the designer labels on her clothes and perfect make-up often turning heads and just radiating wealth. she’s been accused before of just taking advantage of her parents’ money and riding their coattails, but honestly she’s just making the most of what’s given to her while also striving to make her own name in the world. she doesn’t want to always be known as the helders-trenet daughter and that was part of the reason she dreamt of flitting off to nyc. in the city of anonymity, she was hopeful that she’d be able to surround herself with people who weren’t aware of her legacy and instead got to know her for her.
doesn’t easily let her guard down after years of priming to not be taken advantage of. she has a sweet smile and is so charming that you probably won’t notice that you know nearly nothing about her or her inner workings because she’s too busy distracting you with her sweet laughter and fluttering lashes
she truly is that Rich Friendâ„ąïž who will not hesitate to take you shopping when you’re sad or buy you celebratory drinks. she really cherishes her friends and, once you’re able to get through the trial run, you’re locked in for life. she likes to tell herself she doesn’t trust easily and is this stone-cold bitch, but she truly yearns for attention and love and constantly needs to surround herself with people
↘ đ“Œđ“Ÿđ“¶đ“¶đ“Șđ“»đ”‚ !
once again, if you made it through all of that, you’re an icon. my intros are always Way Too Much
tl;dr: an english princess raised with a silver spoon between her rosy lips. all she’s ever known is love, excitement, and ambition and she constantly surrounds herself with it everyday. she traded in her precious london for her dream city three years ago when she set her sights on making a name for herself within the fashion industry. as a soon-to-be nyu graduate, she’s unsure of what her future will hold for her but is just excited to be on the ride honestly.
first things that come to mind when thinking of ana: clean marble decor, pink silk sheets, early morning jogs, melodic laughter, designer labels, afternoon mimosas, and careful sketches filling notebooks.
↘ đ“Źđ“žđ“·đ“·đ“źđ“Źđ“œđ“Čđ“žđ“·đ“Œ !
my wanted page for ana is a little under construction, i was able to write a couple connections that i really want for her but i’ll probably add more as time goes on ! i’m very open to anything though ok so just hmu
click right here to be taken to ana’s wanted page.

Genre - angst, darkfic, fluff, smut

Words - 2k
She knew that from exactly sixty minutes on, a year would be complete. The girl's brown orbs were almost wide-eyed, fixed on the flashing red points that marked the hours on her digital clock by the bed. Even facing the opposite side, she could feel the look of her twin sister on her back, penetrating her ribs, giving the signal that she was also aware of the approaching date in three thousand six hundred seconds.
If you have gone through this already, you will most certainly recognize each following word: denial, anger, negotiation, depression, acceptance. Although death is the only certainty of all mankind, no one is ever prepared to go through emotional mourning. The intense pain, the feeling of revolt, the deep emptiness. The whole family was aware of all these emotions.
Just over a year ago, Naya Valentini and her family had lost two members of their family tree. Under her precise social perception, her favorite uncle and her younger sister. Matteo Valentini was that uncle that it didn’t matter the situation, he could make every single day better. He was the life of family reunions, and after getting divorced, it felt like he was doing better in life than anyone else in the world. That afternoon, in July 2010, he had taken the triplets Max, Graham and Sophie to the movies. Everyone was excited, talking about the debut of My Favorite Evil. What nobody knew was that when they returned, tragedy awaited them. The white van hit the driver's entire side, including the back.
When her parents arrived at the hospital after being notified, the news that Matteo had died instantly frightened them with the idea of the possible death of their sons hammering in the head. Fortunately, the boys would recover quickly, but Sophie had been rushed to the OR. Naya was not together during the emergency, in fact, she and her other siblings had lagged behind to take care of the new foster child of the family, a newborn.
At home, everything was in chaos, and she remembered the scene altogether, which her brain insisted on displaying in slow motion: Liam trying to make Autie stop screaming that she wanted to have gone along, Ethan almost blowing up the microwave while preparing something to eat. Naya tried to finish helping Devyn in the shower, but the baby's crying deconcentrated her.
With parents away from home and the dread of the idea of younger brothers and uncle being involved in an accident, the four elders were able - with much effort - to bring the heavy mattresses downstairs, where they had decided to spend the night together, with the strategy of getting a better look at the younger ones. It was dawn when her father arrived, finding all the children on the floor of their living room, sleeping, except for Lexi, who still was giving Joey a baby formula. Naya still remembered being awakened, and how her father had tried to be as gentle as he could be when telling that Uncle Matt and Sophie had died.
"I can’t sleep either." She heard her sister's voice over her shoulder.
And in that simple sentence, it was possible to feel the weight. They both knew how difficult it had been for the whole family, especially the matriarch, who had lost her ground altogether. The situation was ten times worse when Moon entered the fourth and more difficult stage of mourning: depression. They knew that, like everyone else, she was struggling to move on, however, every time she looked at the newborn, the image of Sophie in her arms for the first time came back in flashes. Her father had suffered two losses at one time - his daughter and his older brother. The mornings in the kitchen, once livened up by the children's conversations, suddenly became quieter. The children's mother had just recovered from the last phase, acceptance, and the one-year anniversary had already arrived.
"What do you think will happen today?" Lexi asked, but the silence was the only answer. "I just hope mom doesn’t freak out”.
Naya turned to her twin sister's side, pulling the blanket close to her face, realizing for the first time that night that they were both in the same position.
“She will not. She is a force of nature.”  And there was definitely a very strong degree of precision in Naya's response. Her mother really was a very inspiring woman, beginning with her life story. Moon never had any kind of contact with her biological father, the only thing she knew was that he was part of USFK, the American Forces of Korea. After a one-night stand, her mother returned to Busan, where Moon was born and eventually, they moved to the United States only because her mother was deluded with life in a foreign country and the hope of marrying the father of her daughter. They didn’t find him and both spent some time in a homeless shelter. Moon was the one who decided to go to school and learn as much English as she could, teaching her mother on her free time after her first job. She ended up in college and became pregnant at a young age, resulting on a marriage with her boyfriend. Still studying, even if it was a distance program, as her children were born, she never for a second of her life gave up the dream of creating her own line of cosmetics. She started from the bottom, reselling some products in Beaufort, deciding to move to Los Angeles to finally open her store and put into practice what she had learned with a chemistry degree.
Nowadays, Moon had two stores in Southern California, and she did her best every day, always encouraging her kids to do the same. Today would also be a day without class. The family would visit the grave of Matteo Valentini, followed by the urn where Naya’s sister's ashes were. Moon was the one who insisted on cremation after Sophie's organ donation, because it was part of her Korean culture, and technically, the Valentini-Kwon family was 50% South Korean and 50% Italian.
"Do you think about Sophie?" This time it was Naya who broke the moment of reflection.
“Honestly?” Lexi turned up, staring at the ceiling before continuing. “Not anymore. Of course, I miss her. It must be a lot worse for the boys, I can’t even imagine what it would be like to lose you.” She referred to the fact that they shared the mother's womb. "But I believe I've been through it. I guess I’m fine now. How about you?”
             "I'm thinking about her now."
"But that's because it's the death anniversary."
"Yes. But I thought the same thing when dad came home that day and told us everything. Sophie was seven. She's gone without knowing what high school is like, or what it's like to kiss someone, or drive a car. She never got a chance to live. Unlike uncle Matt.” Naya adjusted a strand of her own hair. "Thinking about that makes me depressed. She could’ve had the world”.
             “I know.”
             "What about us?"
“Sorry?” Without understanding the question, Lexi frowned.
"What I mean is ..." The other one sat on the bed, the blanket dropped into her lap, just as her hair fell on top of her pajamas. "We can have the world, Sophie doesn’t. The question is: what are we doing with our lives?
“Okay, Nay. Relax a little and get out of this life’s philosophy thing for a moment. You and I ... We're only sixteen. School-type things are our biggest concerns.” Lexi followed the twin, but as she got up, she went to sit on her sister’s bed.
"But that's the point, Lexi. What if we die? I still have so many things that I want to do and we just
Exist. Sophie, she was seven, there wasn’t much she could have done except .... Bring some message to our family.” To say that seemed the correct interpretation. "And it hurts, but I do not want to end up like her, Lexi. I want to live. I want to decide what I'm going to do, challenge myself more. Because I can die tomorrow, or the day after tomorrow. I want to be like uncle Matt. He did everything he wanted.”
Alexia seemed to understand the meaning of that conversation, the reason of her reflective sister.
"So, what do you want to do? Unrelated to, you know, with what we have now. Boyfriend, dance, friends, taking all of these things away?
The question took her by surprise, but perhaps her unconscious wanted that to be thrown on the table. What Naya wanted to do with her life? Once she finished her senior year of high school next year, what she would do? A small memory small came to when her interest in old movies began to emerge after a summer vacation at the grandparents' farm. After that, she remembered the godfather playing piano, and how he said she had a good voice. Her dream of being a musical actress began from there, along with an entire week only watching the famous Broadway performances. She actually achieved that.
Still with the thoughts turned to her godfather, she wondered if she should believe him. After so many refusals, she wouldn’t have the audacity of calling him and asking for advice, and not even would step on other people with incredible talent and much better than her because of their connection. The way was to try, go through all the phases of her challenge, as well as what her late sister would never have the opportunity to do.
With a smile sprouting just as a year had passed since the accident, Naya looked at her sister before she laid down again.
“What? Why are you smiling? Naya?”
"I've figured out what to do."
            "And you’ll not tell me?"
            “You’ll find out.”
So, the girl looked at the digital clock once again, following the moment when he had just shown 4:01, exactly one minute later after her younger sister was pronounced dead. However, the only thing she could do was smile. She had understood one of her sister’s missions in her short life, and hoped the rest of the family would understand soon enough. With a lighter heart, she whispered before falling asleep.
             "Thank you, Sophie.”

Sissi (1955, Austria)
Germany’s annexation of Austria in World War II devastated Austria’s domestic film industry. Either its best directors, producers, and writers fled to neutral or Allied nations or they were absorbed into a centralized, Nazi-run film company named Wien-Film (”Wien” is German for Vienna). Wien-Film rarely distributed propaganda, but its light comedies had anti-Semitic and Fascist undertones. Following Axis defeat, Austria’s film industry – unlike Italy’s neorealists, Poland’s directors examining national identity, or French New Wave directors advocating innovation – looked backward with period pieces and musical comedies as the Austrian public sought escapism, not reminders of their daily struggles. Some writers and historians of cinema might dismiss this demand for escapism as resulting in unchallenging films. But just because Sissi – the first of a trilogy based on the early life of Empress Elisabeth (”Sissi”; pronounced “SEE-see” not like the word “sissy”) of Austria – is not a thematically or cinematically complicated piece, does not mean its initial and enduring popularity is worthless.
Think of Sissi as a delectable, artisanal box of chocolates. Think of Ingmar Bergman movies as broccoli – Swedish broccoli. The latter is healthy and you may just like it (I certainly do); the former may do no favors for your health, but is it not enjoyable?
By 1955, Austria was still in the throes of economic recovery with the Marshall Plan’s assistance. Still occupied by Allied forces, Austria reestablished its sovereignty on July 27, 1955. Five months later, Ernst Marischka’s Sissi was released, becoming one of the most successful German-language movies of all time. Sissi and the two movies following it – which will receive write-ups after this – have since become Christmas staples in German-speaking countries and Hungary. All of that enjoyment begins in the first installment. For Austrians prideful of their history and national identity, it is a romanticized, sanitized yuletide treat. For everyone else, Sissi begins the story of a sumptuous royal drama with the sense of humor of a live-action ‘50s/’60s Disney film (without the juvenile intentions), the production quality as beautiful as any Western film in these difficult years for Europe.
It is the mid-1850s in Bavaria (at the time part of the ineffective German Confederation with close ties with the Austrian Empire, also a member of the Confederation). Princess Elisabeth (Romy Schneider; henceforth referred to as “Sissi”) is the second-oldest daughter of Duke Maximilian Joseph (Gustav Knuth; “Max”) and Duchess Ludovika (Magda Schneider, Romy’s mother). Sissi is sixteen years old, running about her parents’ lakeside estate among the forests and green mountains, living through a wondrous childhood. One day, eldest sister Helene (Uta Franz; “NenĂ©â€) travels with their mother, Ludovika, to Bad Ischl, a summer retreat of Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph I (Karlheinz Böhm). NenĂ© is to be engaged to Franz Joseph, an arrangement engineered long ago by his mother, Archduchess Sophie (Vilma Degischer; Sophie is Ludovika’s elder sister). Despite not being invited to court due to her tomboyish ways, Sissi joins her mother and elder sister out of curiosity for new sights and experiences. While wandering the forest, Sissi accidentally encounters Franz Joseph, beginning a succession of events that sees them falling in love, the audience reeling in secondhand embarrassment for NenĂ© especially, and ending with Sissi’s marriage and crowning as Empress on April 24, 1854.
Other important characters include Franz Joseph’s father Archduke Franz Karl (Erich Nikowitz) and Franz Joseph’s brother Archduke Karl Ludwig (Peter Weck). Serving as comic relief are two fictional creations: the overly presumptuous Gendarmerie-Major Böckl (Josef Meinrad; whose character appears in the two successive Sissi films) and the Postmaster of Ischl (Richard Eybner).
There are some historical inaccuracies for those wanting to compile a definitive list of such things: Sissi was actually the fourth child of Max and Ludovika, not the second. Also, there was never any clandestine mountainous flirtation between Franz Joseph and Sissi; instead, he just happened to find Sissi more attractive than NenĂ© (if NenĂ© had a nicer temperament, then his motivations might be suspect). Of all the Sissi films, this first installment – the entire trilogy was written by Marischka – is the one rewriting history the most. The narrative contrivances to extend the romantic drama are too convenient and too silly to be believed anyways. This fits with the tenor Sissi is attempting but is ultimately as clichĂ©d as any romance could be.
However, depending on how enjoyable and charming a piece of narrative art is, even the most generic of storylines and developments get an occasional (or frequent) pass. The opening half-hour of Sissi sees the titular princess and her siblings frolic like the spoiled countryside urchins they are – think “Do-Re-Mi” from another film allowing audiences a glimpse of beautiful Austrian backdrops. For all of the traditional stiffness that Archduchess Sophie attempts to enforce, the gleeful spontaneity of Sissi’s family (and Sissi herself) provides a light-hearted juxtaposition that, in the two subsequent films, becomes the center of personal dramas. The 1955 Sissi is hinting at the disappointment and sadness that is to come, but there is nothing like a first love for people to forget life’s difficulties, and what must be endured and tolerated as years pass. The audience can sense the tension between Sissi’s dedication to Franz Joseph and her fear of the trappings – and traps – of the imperial duties she must perform.
Throughout this trilogy, Romy Schneider takes the part of Sissi and allows us to see the Empress’ generosity, forbearance, and endurance. By the time the final Sissi film was released in 1957, Schneider would occasionally be referred to as, “Sissi” in German-language media. All this for good reason – Schneider becomes Sissi on the first try. Her warmth, derived from her too-perfect parents and too-perfect family, is here in abundance, even in times where her character faces the obstruction of royal ways and Archduchess Sophie’s initial coldness toward her. As Franz Josef, Karlheinz Böhm – ten years Schneider’s elder, the two became great friends during production – is less charismatic here, but his better performances will come as political intrigue strikes in the upcoming movies.
Elsewhere, Vilma Degischer plays Archduchess Sophie as a stickler for tradition, almost offended by her son’s indiscretions – Sophie convinced her husband to abdicate the throne in 1848 to Franz Josef, positioning herself as arguably the most important person in the Austrian Empire. Degischer is unmoving, calculating, but never acting against her son’s or the Empire’s interests. Degischer allows audiences to understand Sophie’s intentions – a lesser actress might have interpreted Sophie as too antagonistic. A subplot where Gendarmerie-Major Böckl believes Sissi to be a nefarious individual before her first encounter with Franz Joseph is an overstretched punchline, but at least Josef Meinrad’s energy and comic timing is excellent.
The first Sissi film is, thematically, the least interesting in the entire series despite being the least flawed overall. All of the conflicts – political, personal, familial – that make this series worthwhile are all developing in the background, to be fully articulated once Sissi understand the imperial experience of being a public leader. This film is most like the stereotypical conception of a Disney princess movie, with romance that is flighty, and drama that is, in some sense, smiled away.
Unless written otherwise, many of the craftspersons about to be mentioned served for the entire Sissi trilogy because they were Ernst Marischka regulars around this time. Everyone mentioned here contributes astounding work.
Cinematographer Bruno Mondi (co-cinematographer on Fritz Lang’s 1921 film Destiny) shoots much of this film outdoors, as the first Sissi is more dependent on exteriors and on-location footage than the others.  Thankfully for Mondi, the on-location exteriors lend to this film’s (and the trilogy’s) epic, postcard-picture-perfect scope. Seeking out locations Princess (later Empress) Elisabeth lived in her youth, Marischka wanted to shoot at the family estate of Possenhofen Castle on Lake Starnberg. However, the castle was in such disrepair at the time that shooting moved to Fuschlee Castle in Salzburg instead. Other locations include the Tyrolean mountains, Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna (Franz Joseph’s summer residence; Schönbrunn will be prevalent later) and St. Michael's Church in Vienna.
In other technical areas, the costume design by Leo Bei (Marischka’s 1954 film The Story of Vickie, various 1960s Disney productions set in Austria), Gerdago (The Story of Vickie), and Franz Szivats (Szivats is the only credited costume designer who did not work on the third film) is magnificent. Alternating between simpler – but upper-class – casual attire to the courtly gowns and suits found in the ball scenes, the amount of costumes needed for Sissi alone is incredible to see. Art director/production designer Fritz JĂŒptner-Jonstorff has obviously completed extensive research to implement as many details as he can to Sissi’s family’s lakeside home as well as the royal residences.
The music score by Anton Profes (The Story of Vickie) concentrates around Sissi’s theme, which appears across the trilogy typically as transitional music. The motif never tires itself, and Profes knows to arrange the theme slightly depending on the situational contexts of the previous or upcoming scenes. Otherwise, if one despises Viennese waltzes, be warned that Johann Strauss II’s Roses from the South waltz might be stuck in your head once completing any of the Sissi films (as is a recurring theme in this write-up, there will be more waltz music and musical interest in the sequels; know what you are getting into in all facets of the filmmaking before committing). Oh, and for you history sticklers, Roses from the South is an anachronism; Strauss composed the piece in 1880.
Not only did Sissi become an instant cultural phenomenon in Austria, a sort of reclamation of a glorious past through cinema. But it also proved popular in an unexpected place. For Chinese mainlanders who lived through the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976), the film’s appearance on mainland Chinese television spurred Chinese interest in Austria. The first Sissi – I have no independent confirmation about the popularity of the entire trilogy – needed no censorship because of its lack of politics and fluffy romance. On China’s equivalent of the IMDb, Douban, Sissi is very well-rated and popular for a 1950s Western movie (China, for various reasons including the government’s censoring prickliness, does not have as strong a cinematic tradition that values classic movie fandom as many Western nations).
In North America, Sissi is relatively unknown, as is the name Romy Schneider –  Schneider later appeared in a handful of Hollywood productions, but felt most at home in Europe. All three Sissi films are now available on Blu-ray thanks to New York-based Film Movement. Film Movement is an organization that distributes non-English language and independent films (theatrically and monthly on home media) that have been ignored by North American audiences. On Halloween this year, Film Movement released the box set of the entire trilogy with a new 2K restoration. These are the versions that aired on Turner Classic Movies (TCM) on October 18, and on which this review (and the two later pieces I will write to complete the trilogy) is based on.
Sissi has all the sweetness of the most heartwarming fairy tales and is deserving of its status as a cultural touchstone. Along with some liberties in the storytelling, the craftswork and the performances enliven these historical individuals and moments described in books, depicted in portraits, regarded by the Austrian people.
My rating: 7.5/10
^ Based on my personal imdb rating. Half-points are always rounded down. My interpretation of that ratings system can be found here.
Also in the Sissi trilogy: Sissi: The Young Empress (1956) and Sissi: Fateful Years of an Empress (1957)

Review: inbento (Nintendo Switch)
I’m not entirely sure it’s possible for a game to be cuter than inbento. What could be more adorable and wholesome than a game centered around a mother cat making bento boxes for her kitten? But is it fun to play?
Before I get to that, let’s take a look at the game’s presentation. The story is told via simple illustrations that you swipe to move through.
Originally an award-winning mobile game, inbento’s touchscreen controls translate nicely to the Switch in handheld mode. If you’re playing on the TV or just prefer sticks and buttons, you can play that way, too.
Once you get through the introduction (mom and kitten go shopping, kitten goes to bed, mom learns new recipes for tomorrow’s lunch), inbento slides naturally into the gameplay. You’re given a recipe, an empty bento box, and ingredients, and it’s up to you to arrange the ingredients so they match the recipe.
Of course, this starts out easily; drag the rice into the box. But no one wants just rice for lunch, so more ingredients are added. They need to be spun, moved, overlapped, flipped or not flipped depending upon the menu. The box quickly gets bigger, allowing for more ingredients and more complicated recipes.
I had my eight-year-old son, Max, and sixteen-year-daughter, Sophie, play the game, and both started out with the same criticism: “This is too easy.” A few minutes and a dozen or so puzzles later, however, and Max completely gave up. Sophie stuck with it, eventually declaring herself an “inbento genius.” Still, she didn’t play it very long before moving on to something else. Was that a difficulty issue? I don’t think so. The puzzles in inbento never get truly difficult, they just start to require more thought. Or, in some cases, trial-and-error. I solved more than a few by dumping ingredients into the box until I was able to visualize the final few steps. For the most part, though, the puzzles are a fun mixture of observation and implementation.
The setback is that the puzzles are virtually the same throughout. Although the integrated story helps break up the monotony, you’re basically doing the same thing throughout the game’s 100+ puzzles. As such, inbento is best enjoyed in short bursts. And although the graphics are cute and friendly, they tend to get dwarfed on the TV. This is definitely a game that feels more natural on your Switch Lite or in the Switch’s handheld mode.
It’s easy for me to recommend inbento based solely on how sweet the game is. The art, story, and music come together to create an experience that’s cute without being treacly (and if you’re the parent of a kid who watches any child-based television programming, you know that’s a very rare thing). Still, the clever puzzles and pleasing challenges do succumb to the lack of variation. You may, therefore, find yourself putting it aside after a few puzzles as a result, but will surely go back to it before too long. You know
as with most good mobile games.
